Abstract:Alloy-type antimony (Sb) and conversion-type molybdenum (Mo) anodes have attracted extensive attention in the application of lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) owing to their high theoretical capacity. In this study, Sb2MoO6 nanowires are prepared via a hydrothermal method and assessed their thermal behavior upon heat treatment, observing an intriguing transformation from nanowire to Sb2O3/MoOx nanosheets. To enhance structure stability, the Sb2MoO6 nanowires are successfully coated with a polyphosphazene layer (referred to as PZS@Sb2MoO6), which not only preserved the nanowires form but also yielded N/S co-doped carbon-coated SbPO4/MoOx (NS-C@SbPO4/MoOx) nanowires following annealing in an inert environment. This composite benefits from the stable PO4 3- anion that serve as a buffer against volume expansion and form a Li3PO4 matrix during cycling, both of which substantially bolster ion transport and cycle endurance. Doping with heteroatoms introduces numerous oxygen vacancies, augmenting the number of electrochemically active sites, and carbon integration considerably enhances the electronic conductivity of the electrode and alleviates the volume-change-induced electrode pulverization. Employed as anode materials in LIBs, the NS-C@SbPO4/MoOx electrode exhibits remarkable cycling performance (449.8 mA h g-1 at 1000 mA g-1 over 700 cycles) along with superior rate capability (394.2 mA h g-1 at 2000 mA g-1).

Abstract:A new ternary Mo-SnO2-graphite composite has been constructed via hydrothermal and ball milling. The Mo/SnO2 hybrids were homogeneously dispersed in graphite nanosheets. In the Mo-SnO2-graphite, Mo can inhibit the Sn nanoparticle aggregation, enhance the reversible conversion reaction in lithiation, and improve the electrochemical performance. Consequently, the Mo-SnO2-graphite composite contributes a high capacity of 1317.4 mAh g-1 at 0.2 A g-1 after 200 cycles, remarkable rate property of 514.0 mAh g-1 at 5 A g-1, and long-term cyclic stabilization of 759.0 mAh g-1 after 950 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. With outstanding electrochemical performance and facial synthesis, the ternary Mo-SnO2-graphite is a hopeful anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs).
One-Pot Hydrothermal Synthesis and Electrochemical Performance of Subspheroidal Core–Shell Structure MoS2/C Composite as Anode Material for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its distinctive graphene-like structure and high specific capacity. However, its commercial application is hindered by the severe volume expansion during lithiation/delithiation and poor conductivity. In this paper, we report a facile one-pot enhanced hydrothermal synthesis strategy to prepare high-performance MoS2/C composite materials. The results indicate that the as-prepared MoS2/C composite is a subspheroidal core–shell structure material, with uniform coating, good particle dispersion, and an average grain size of approximately 80 nm. The morphology of the composite remained unchanged even after annealing at 500 °C for 2 h. The addition of glucose can accelerate the nucleation and growth of MoS2, and higher hydrothermal temperatures can improve the product yield. The addition of PVP has little effect on the yield, but significantly reduces the particle size. The XPS analysis reveals that the MoO3 may be generated as an intermediate product during the hydrothermal process. The electrochemical test results show that the unannealed MoS2/C samples exhibit discharge-specific capacities of 705.2 mAh·g−1 and 625.7 mAh·g−1 after the first cycle and the 100th cycle, respectively, at a current density of 500 mA·g−1, with a capacity retention rate of 88.7%. In contrast, the specific capacity of the MoS2/C specimens after annealing at 500 °C for 2 h shows a tendency to decrease and then slowly increase during the cycles, and the discharge specific capacity is 582.3 mAh·g−1 after the 100th cycle, which is lower than that of the unheated sample. The impedance analysis reveals that the lithium-ion diffusion coefficient of the MoS2/C material without calcination is 2.11 × 10−18 cm·s−2, which is superior to that of the annealed MoS2/C and pristine MoS2 samples. This characteristic is favorable for lithiation/delithiation during the charge/discharge process.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is a promising alternative anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). MoS2 has unique layered crystal structure with a large and tunable interlayer distance, and is anticipated to have excellent rate and cycling stabilities due to improved lithium ion intercalation and de-intercalation. In this work, we successfully prepared novel N-doped carbon-coated MoS2 nanosheets on hollow carbon microspheres. The composite spheres have an average diameter of 520 nm. We demonstrate that these electrodes show excellent electrochemical performance, which is attributed to the synergistic effect between the carbon microspheres, N-doped carbon coating, and MoS2 nanosheets. The best performing electrode has high specific capacity of 997 mAh g−1 and good cycling stability, retaining a capacity of around 707 mAh g−1 at a current density of 100 mA g−1 after 120 cycles; furthermore, the electrode shows stable rate performance, retaining a capacity of 631 mAh g−1 at a current density of 2000 mA g−1.

Abstract:Layered stacking and highly porous N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets are prepared from a stable Mo-enhanced hydrogel. The hydrogel is formed through the ultrafast cross-linking of phosphomolybdic acid and chitosan. During the reduction of the composite hydrogel framework under inert gas protection, highly porous N and P co-doped carbon nanosheets are produced with the in situ formation of ultrafine Mo2 C nanoparticles highly distributed throughout the nanosheets which are entangled via a hierarchical lamellar infrastructure. This unique architecture of the N, P co-doped Mo2 C/C nanosheets tremendously promote the electrochemical activity and operate stability with high specific capacity and extremely stable cycling. In particular, this versatile synthetic strategy can also be extended to other polyoxometalate (such as phosphotungstic acid) to provide greater opportunities for the controlled fabrication of novel hierarchical nanostructures for next-generation high performance energy storage applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) is considered as a highly promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) due to its unique layer structure, large plane spacing, and high theoretical specific capacity; however, the overlap of MoS2 nanosheets and inherently low electrical conductivity lead to rapid capacity decay, resulting in poor cycling stability and low multiplicative performance. This severely limits its practical application in LIBs. To overcome the above problems, composite fibers with a core//sheath structure have been designed and fabricated. The sheath moiety of MoS2 nanosheets is uniformly anchored by the hydrothermal treatment of the axial of carbon nanofibers derived from an electrospinning method (CNFs//MoS2). The quantity of the MoS2 nanosheets on the CNFs substrates can be tuned by controlling the amount of utilized thiourea precursor. The influence of the MoS2 nanosheets on the electrochemical properties of the composite fibers has been investigated. The synergistic effect between MoS2 and carbon nanofibers can enhance their electrical conductivity and ionic reversibility as an anode for LIBs. The composite fibers deliver a high reversible capacity of 866.5 mA h g−1 after 200 cycles at a current density of 0.5 A g−1 and maintain a capacity of 703.3 mA h g−1 after a long cycle of 500 charge–discharge processes at 1 A g−1.

Abstract:Doping and carbon encapsulation modifications have been proven to be effective methods for enhancing the lithium storage performance of batteries. The hydrothermal method and ball milling are commonly used methods for material synthesis. In this study, a composite anode material rich in carbon nanotubes (CNTs) conductive tubular network connection and encapsulation of SnO2-MoS2@CNTs (SMC) was synthesized by combining these two methods. In this highly conductive network, nano-SnO2 particles are uniformly dispersed and embedded in MoS2 with a layered structure, and the obtained SnO2-MoS2 composite material is tightly connected and encapsulated by the tubular network of CNTs. It is worth noting that the incorporation of layered MoS2 not only effectively anchors the SnO2 nanoparticles, but also provides a broader space for lithium-ion movement due to the larger interlayer spacing. The conductive network of CNTs shortens the diffusion path of electrons and Li+ and provides more diffusion channels. The reversible capacity of the SnO2-MoS2@CNTs nanocomposite material remains at 1069.3 mA h g-1 after 320 cycles at 0.2 A g-1, and it exhibits excellent long-term cycling stability, maintaining 904.5 mA h g-1 after 1000 cycles at 1.0 A g-1. The composite material demonstrates excellent pseudocapacitive contribution rate performance, with a contribution rate of 87% at 2.0 mV s-1. The results indicate that SnO2-MoS2@CNTs has excellent electrochemical lithium storage performance and is a promising anode material for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:A novel molybdenum disulfide/carbon (MoS2/C) nanocomposite is synthesized by a simple hydrothermal method using glucose as a carbon source and Pluronic F127 as promoting agent in presence of MoS2 nanoparticles and followed by carbonization. Pluronic F127 is used as an essential agent which inhibits the spontaneous formation of carbon microspheres during the hydrothermal reaction. The composite electrode exhibits excellent cycling stability and rate capability, delivering a reversible capacity of 882.6 mA h g−1 at a current density of 50 mA g−1 and a capacity retention of 82.8% after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g−1. At a higher current density of 300/500 mA g−1, it still retains a capacity of 603.6/461.6 mA h g−1 respectively, as compared to 295.6/228.4 mA h g−1 for the pristine MoS2 electrode. The composite shows favorable electrochemical kinetics compared with pristine MoS2 due to the incorporation of homogenous conductive carbon layer and its nanostructured morphology.

Abstract:Molybdenum disulfide (MoS 2 ) is gaining popularity as an active material for constructing anode in rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. However, the low conductivity, poor cycle stability and charge–discharge rate performance are still the main obstacles hindering its practical applications. In the present work, a novel structure of sandwich-like N-doped carbon@MoS 2 @N-doped carbon hierarchical nanospheres (C@MoS 2 @C) is rationally designed, where a hollow N-doped carbon hierarchical microsphere served as a core and ultrathin N-doped carbon coated "sandwiched" MoS 2 nanosheets (NSs) as a shell. The inner carbon skeleton serves as a template for the in-situ growth of MoS 2 NSs, whereas the outside carbon layers protect the MoS 2 layer with high structural stability. The 3D fiber carbon nanospheres made from KCC-1 have high specific surface area and large pore diameter, which can shorten the ion diffusion path and accelerate the reaction kinetics. Additionally, the close contact between MoS 2 and the two carbon layers not only improves the conductivity of electrode but also enhances the reversibility of the conversion reaction of Mo/Li 2 S to MoS 2 by suppress the oxidation of Li 2 S to polysulfides. As a sequence, the as-prepared C@MoS 2 @C nanospheres exhibit a remarkable initial discharge capacity, excellent cycling stability, and outstanding rate performance. We believe that the as-prepared composite material may offer some potential applications as anodic materials for efficient lithium batteries.

Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides, which display considerable theoretical capacity and large layer spacing, have been regarded as promising candidates as anode materials for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs). However, their low conductivity and large volume change during charge-discharge cycles leads to performance degradation. Herein, polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is used as a soft template to synthesize PVP-derived nitrogen-doped carbon-coated MoS2 composites (MoS2/NC) by a simple hydrothermal method followed by high-temperature treatment. The as-prepared composite exhibits a flowerball-like morphology and a diameter of approximately 250 nm. The optimized MoS2/NC has the most uniform particle size and provides the best performance, with a stable capacity of 504.9 mAh g-1 after 120 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1. It has excellent rate performance, which can reach 524.6, 481.9, 447.7, 412.5, and 370.9 mAh g-1 at current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1 and 2 A g-1, respectively. The small particle size and the addition of carbonaceous materials play an important role in their excellent electrochemical properties. This study opens up a simple and effective way to synthesize high-performance two-dimensional MoS2 composite anodes for SIBs.
Dual Regulation Mechanism of MoS2/MoO3 Heterostructure for Polysulfide and Volume Effect Enables Stable and Durable Lithium Storage

Abstract:Current commercial Li-ion batteries (LIBs) with graphite anode are unable to meet the actual demand due to their low energy density. Recently, MoO3 possesses 1117 mAh g-1 high theoretical specific capacity has received a wide attention and is regarded as a promising anode material. However, the low intrinsic electronic conductivity and the large volume effect of MoO3 limited the practical application. Given the typical MoS2 anode materials with high electron conductivity and discharge capacity, in this work, we designed a 2D hierarchical MoS2/MoO3 nanocomposite. As expected, the large exposed edges and layered MoS2 provide sufficient channels for rapid ion diffusion while improving the volume variation and conductivity of MoO3. Nevertheless, as an anode material, MoS2 suffers from severe and undesired sulfur loses during cycling, resulting in rapid capacity degradation. It is found that MoO3 and intercalation state (LixMoO3) characters a strong chemical adsorption property that have been demonstrated to be effectively promoting the conversion of soluble lithium polysulfides, thereby enhancing the kinetics of sulfur conversion. Inspired with such multifunction structural design strategy, the MoS2/MoO3 anode achieves a remarkable specific capacity (1255.7 mAh g-1) and long cycling life (1300 cycles). Subsequently, coupled with LiFePO4 cathode, the full cells achieved a 129 mAh g-1 competitive capacity and the retention rate is as high as 99.3% after 100 cycles. This work provides an inspired strategy and routes to realize a high energy density LIBs.
Molybdenum carbide nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes as a sulfur host for advanced Li-S battery

Abstract:The poor electrical conductivity of sulfur, large volume expansion, shuttle effect, and sluggish redox reactions in Li–S battery limit their practical application. Mo 2 C nanoparticles encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes (Mo 2 C/NC NTs) were synthesized using MoO 3 nanorods as templates through a polypyrrole coating, heating, ammonia washing, and high-temperature carbonization. The Mo 2 C/NC NTs had a hollow structure with high specific surface area that can alleviate the volume expansion of cathode and the shuttle effect of polysulfides. The encapsulated Mo 2 C nanoparticles could anchor the lithium polysulfides and increase electrochemical reaction kinetics. Mo 2 C/NC NTs combined with sulfur (Mo 2 C/S/NC NTs) exhibited 400.2 mAh g −1 over 500 cycles at 1.0 A g −1 with a capacity decay rate of 0.068% per cycle. Density-functional theory calculations and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy confirmed that Mo 2 C/NC NTs could anchor polysulfides and alleviate the shuttle effect by chemical interactions. This study supplies a novel route to prepare nanoparticle-encapsulated in N-doped carbon nanotubes for advanced Li-S battery.

Abstract:With society's rapid progress, there is an increasing need for electricity among individuals, but the prevailing source of electricity is still mainly obtained through the burning of nonrenewable fossil fuels, which are not renewable and pose serious environmental hazards. Lithium-ion batteries are used widely for excellent rechargeable capabilities and high energy density. Recently, researchers have become increasingly interested in transition metal sulfides owing to their cost-effectiveness and remarkable specific capacity. However, their commercialization has been hindered by the expansion of material volume and low electrical conductivity during charging and discharging. We have successfully designed and synthesized MoS2 nanosheets loaded on carbon spheres with a 3D hollow structure starting from SiO2 as a template. Due to the doping of carbon materials and particular 3D hollow structures, the optimal C/MoS2-0.3 hollow nanocomposites exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. Following exposure to over 900 cycles at a 0.5 A g-1 ampere density, the materials exhibited an exceptional 958.50 mAh g-1 reversible capacity, demonstrating their remarkable performance.

Abstract:Layered metal sulfides are potential anode materials for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) because their unique structure makes them suitable for Li+ de-intercalation. As a typical 2D layered material, MoS2 is a potential anode material for LIBs due to the weak van der Waals forces between the layers, which facilitates the deintercalation of Li+ and supports multiple Li+. However, when MoS2 is used as anodes for LIBs material, rapid capacity decay hinders the application. Coupling two different materials to form a heterogeneous structure is an effective way to solve the above problems. In this work, one-pot hydrothermal method is proposed to construct MoS2/SnS heterostructure composites. The electrochemical properties are significantly enhanced, which could be attributed to the presence of heterogeneous structures, leading to increase the electrode charge transfer rate and interfacial reaction kinetics. The results show that the discharge capacity of the MoS2/SnS-1.5 electrode is about 1492.1 mAh/g at 500 mA/g. Furthermore, assembled MoS2@SnS-1.5||LiCoO2 full cell displays a high discharge capacity of 226.1 mAh/g after 50 cycles at 500 mA/g. This facile method provides the application value of layered metal sulfides as LIBs anode materials.
Rapid microwave-hydrothermal preparation of few-layer MoS2/C nanocomposite as anode for highly reversible lithium storage properties

Abstract:Abstract3D nanohybrid structures with few-layered MoS2 nanosheets uniformly incorporated in the carbon substrate are prepared via using the rapid and homogeneous microwave-hydrothermal method, in which the size of the basic unit structure of MoS2/C was small. The samples were systematically investigated by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-Ray photoelectron spectroscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy for structure and composition test. The electrochemical performances of the composites are evaluated by cyclic voltammogram, galvanostatic charge–discharge and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Electrochemical measurements reveal that the maximum-specific capacitance of the MoS2/C electrodes reaches up to 1003 mAh g–1 at a discharge current density 100 mA g–1. The MoS2/C hybrid composite remains 755 mAh g–1 after 50 cycles at the current of 200 mA g–1, much higher than that of the pure MoS2. The superior electrochemical performances of MoS2/C composites as Li-ion battery anodes are attributed to their enhanced available active sites for charges, decreased transmission resistance between interlayers, improved electronic conductivity as well as good mechanical stability.

Abstract:Nanocomposites that combine porous materials and a continuous conductive skeleton as a sulfur host can improve the performance of lithium–sulfur (Li-S) batteries. Herein, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) anchoring small-size (~40 nm) N-doped porous carbon polyhedrons (S-NCPs/CNTs) are designed and synthesized via annealing the precursor of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 grown in situ on CNTs (ZIF-8/CNTs). In the nanocomposite, the S-NCPs serve as an efficient host for immobilizing polysulfides through physical adsorption and chemical bonding, while the interleaved CNT networks offer an efficient charge transport environment. Moreover, the S-NCP/CNT composite with great features of a large specific surface area, high pore volume, and short electronic/ion diffusion depth not only demonstrates a high trapping capacity for soluble lithium polysulfides but also offers an efficient charge/mass transport environment, and an effective buffering of volume changes during charge and discharge. As a result, the Li-S batteries based on a S/S-NCP/CNT cathode deliver a high initial capacity of 1213.8 mAh g−1 at a current rate of 0.2 C and a substantial capacity of 1114.2 mAh g−1 after 100 cycles, corresponding to a high-capacity retention of 91.7%. This approach provides a practical research direction for the design of MOF-derived carbon materials in the application of high-performance Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Reasonably combining the strengths of insertion and conversion anode materials to create an advanced anode material remains a formidable challenge for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries (LIBs). In this work, bulk MoS2 embedded with T-Nb2O5 nanospheres was synthesized via a simple hydrothermal synthesis and polydopamine carbon source was introduced by heat treatment. The design strategy can effectively accelerate the charge transfer and reduce the volume expansion during the electrochemical cyclings, leading to the improvement of lithium storage performance. As a consequence, the coexistence of T-Nb2O5, MoS2 and C can achieve the best synergistic effect when the molar ratio of Nb and Mo source was 1: 1. Notably, T-Nb2O5@MoS2@C-1-1 electrode not only delivered the excellent reversible capacity of 518 mAh g-1 at the current density of 0.1 A g-1 but also exhibited superb cycling stability. The specific capacity of this electrode maintained 187 mAh g-1 at 2 A g-1 after 1000 cycles with a negligible capacity fading rate of only 0.015% per cycle.

Abstract:A facile and scalable process was developed for the synthesis of single-layer MoS2-graphene nanosheet (SL-MoS2-GNS) composites based on the concurrent reduction of (NH4)(2)MoS4 and graphene oxide sheets by hydrazine in the presence of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), followed by annealing in a N-2 atmosphere. The morphology and microstructure of the composites were examined by X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The formation process for the SL-MoS2-GNS composites was also investigated. The SL-MoS2-GNS composites delivered a large reversible capacity and good cycle stability as a Li-ion battery anode. In particular, the composites easily surpassed MoS2 in terms of rate performance and cycle stability at high current densities. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy revealed that the GNS in the composite not only reduced the contact resistance in the electrode but also significantly facilitated the electron transfer in lithiation and delithiation reactions. The good electrochemical performance of the composites for reversible Li+ storage could be attributed to the synergy between the functions of SL-MoS2 and GNS.

Abstract:Lithium sulfur (Li-S) batteries hold promise as next-generation high energy density devices due to their high theoretical capacities. However, their commercialization confronts great challenges, in particular the notorious shuttle effect and sluggish kinetics, making it difficult to realize high sulfur loading and cell energy density properties. Herein, we explore the potential of molybdenum carbide (Mo2C) as the cathode catalyst to promote the polysulfide conversion. Nanosized Mo2C embedded porous carbon network (Mo2C@PCN) are prepared through the pyrolysis of molybdenum and chitosan precursor. Both electrochemical performance and theoretical calculations reveal that introducing the Mo2C can not only enhance the affinity toward the polysulfide intermediate, but also significantly accelerate the polysulfide interconversion compared with that of the pristine porous carbon network (PCN), thereby endowing the Li-S batteries with excellent cycling stability with a low capacity decay of 0.034 % per cycle over 600 cycles, and superb rate capability of 644 mAh g−1 at 5 A g−1.

Abstract:Traditional graphite anode material typically shows a low theoretical capacity and easy lithium decomposition. Molybdenum disulfide is one of the promising anode materials for advanced lithium-ion batteries, which possess low cost, unique two-dimensional layered structure, and high theoretical capacity. However, the low reversible capacity and the cycling-capacity retention rate induced by its poor conductivity and volume expansion during cycling blocks further application. In this paper, a collaborative control strategy of monodisperse MoS2/graphite composites was utilized and studied in detail. MoS2/graphite nanocomposites with different ratios (MoS2:graphite = 20%:80%, 40%:60%, 60%:40%, and 80%:20%) were prepared by mechanical ball-milling and low-temperature annealing. The graphite sheets were uniformly dispersed between the MoS2 sheets by the ball-milling process, which effectively reduced the agglomeration of MoS2 and simultaneously improved the electrical conductivity of the composite. It was found that the capacity of MoS2/graphite composites kept increasing along with the increasing percentage of MoS2 and possessed the highest initial discharge capacity (832.70 mAh/g) when MoS2:graphite = 80%:20%. This facile strategy is easy to implement, is low-cost, and is cosmically produced, which is suitable for the development and manufacture of advance lithium-ion batteries.
