Abstract:Separators serve as critical components in batteries, bearing the responsibility for battery safety. In addition to the demand for increased flame resistance of separators, there is a growing interest in the additional functions of battery separators. In this work, a multifunctional coating integration strategy is proposed for battery separators via the versatility of metal-organic frameworks. A versatile and high-safety MIP-202@2320 composite separator is engineered and it is integrated into lithium-sulfur batteries. The presence of Cl- and the porous structure of MIP-202 impart flame-retardant characteristics and high electrolyte retention (80%) to resulting separators. Moreover, coupled with the negatively charged electron cloud formed by Cl- ions within the channels, it can selectively impede the polysulfides from migrating toward the anode, while concurrently facilitating the movement of Li+ ions. The assembled lithium-sulfur battery with MIP-202@2320 as the separator maintains an impressive 71.8% capacity retention even after 600 cycles at a 0.5C rate. This multifunctional integration strategy not only boosts the performance of lithium-sulfur batteries but also pioneers a new direction for the design of future battery separators for different kinds of batteries. The MIP-202@2320 composite separator, used in lithium-sulfur batteries, has superior safety and multifunctional properties. With Cl- ions and porous structure, it provides flame resistance and 80% electrolyte retention. The electron cloud of Cl- ions inhibits polysulfide migration but promotes Li+ ion transfer. After 600 cycles at 0.5 C rate, the battery retains 71.8% capacity. image

Abstract:Considering the unprecedented advantages such as superb theoretical capacity, high energy density and low cost, lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) have been under spotlight in past several years. Nevertheless, limited by its intrinsic drawbacks of highly insulating character, serious shuttle effect and lithium dendrites growth, there is still a long way from large-scale application of LSBs. Here, a polyacrylonitrile@metal organic frameworks (PAN@MOFs) composite-derived heteroatoms doped carbon@encapsulated CoS2 nanoparticles (NSPCFS@CoS2) modified separator is designed to surmount these issues. Notably, the modified separator shows improved flame retardancy. By using this separator, the effective suppression on shuttle behavior as well as boost in polysulfides conversion kinetics are realized, which can be assigned to the integrative superiorities of conductive carbon fiber network, electrocatalytic activity, polar-polar interaction and Lewis acid-base interaction. The cell with modified separator shows an initial discharge capacity of 1140.7 mAh g-1. After running for 100 cycles, a high capacity of 631.6 mAh g-1 is retained. Notably, the inhibited growth of lithium dendrites is also obtained, indicating the promoted battery safety. Overall, this work may provide useful inspirations for the utilization of MOFs-derived hierarchical composite in implementing safer high-performance LSBs.
A Novel Strategy for High-Stability Lithium Sulfur Batteries by in Situ Formation of Polysulfide Adsorptive-Blocking Layer

Abstract:Lithium sulfur (LiS) batteries are one of the most promising energy storage devices owing to their high energy and power density. However, the shuttle effect as a key barrier hinders its practical application by resulting in low coulombic efficiency and poor cycling performance. Herein, a novel design of in situ formed polysulfide adsorptive-blocking layer (PAL) on the cathode surface was developed to tame the polysulfide shuttling and promote the cycling stability for LiS batteries. The PAL is consisted of La2S3, which is capable to chemically adsorb polysulfide via the strong interaction of LaS bond and SS bond, and build an effective barrier against sulfur escaping. Moreover, the La2S3 is capable to suppress the crystallization of Li2S and promote the ion transfer, which contributes to the reduced internal resistance of batteries. Furthermore, the by-product LiNO3 simultaneously forms a stable anode solid and electrolyte interface to further inhibit the polysulfide shuttle. By this simple and convenient method, the resultant LiS batteries achieved exceptional cycling stability with an ultralow decay rate of 0.055% since the 10th cycle.
Surface-coated AlF3 Nanolayers Enable Polysulfide Confinement Within Biomass-Derived Nitrogen-Doped Hierarchical Porous Carbon Microspheres for Improved Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:The electrically insulating and volumetric deformation of sulfur and the shuttle effect of the intermediate lithium polysulfide (LiPSs) have severely hindered the development of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Herein, a synergistic strategy of hierarchical porous nitrogen-doped carbon microspheres (PNCM) derived from low-cost biomass with surface-coated AlF3 nanolayer as a multifunctional sulfur host (denoted as PNCM@S@AlF3) was developed. The PNCM not only possesses an abundant pore structure, large surface area, and high electrical conductivity but also features an intrinsic N-doped and fluorinated framework, which effectively enhances the physical adsorption and chemical anchoring to LiPSs. In addition, the AlF3 nanolayer protects the open surface of the porous carbon to isolate sulfur species from the electrolyte to reduce irreversible losses while accelerating the redox kinetics of LiPSs through strong polar adsorption and bonding. Hence, the PNCM@S@AlF3 cathode exhibits an initial capacity as high as 1176.2 mAh/g at 0.2C, and the cycling stability and rate capability are superior to that of PNCM@S without AlF3 coating. Impressively, the PNCM@S@AlF3 cathode delivers stable long-term cycling performance at a high rate of 2C, with 95.6% capacity retention after 500 cycles. This work presents a facile, sustainable, and efficient synergistic strategy for developing advanced LSBs.

Abstract:Owing to the superior merits of high energy density, low cost and environmental benignity, lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) are greatly favored by researchers. However, the intrinsic shortages including serious shuttling behavior and lithium dendrites growth, are deemed as stumbling blocks on the way of commercializing LSBs. Also, the inferior thermostability and flame retardancy of common separator may cause safety hazard to LSBs. Here, the designing of thermotolerant and flame-resistant PAN-based separator (MPAN) via surface engineering with heteroatoms doped carbon framework encapsulated with CoS2 nanocatalysts, is proposed. By utilizing MPAN separators, the efficient hinderances on shuttling behavior and marked promotions in polysulfides conversion are achieved, leading to the superior electrochemical properties. Notably, the cycling performances of LSBs under high temperature are obviously enhanced. As expected, the inhibited dendrites growth is obtained, corroborating the improved safety of LSBs. In short, this work may shed a light on constructing thermotolerant and flame-resistant separator with efficacy in suppressing shuttling behavior and lithium dendrites growth.
Multifunctional Lithium Phytate/Carbon Nanotube Double-Layer-Modified Separators for High-Performance Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Li dendrite and the shuttle effect are the two primary hindrances to the commercial application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs). Here, a multifunctional separator has been fabricated via successively coating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and lithium phytate (LP) onto a commercial polypropylene (PP) separator to improve the performance of LSBs. The LP coating layer with abundant electronegative phosphate group as permselective ion sieve not only reduces the polysulfide shuttle but also facilitates uniform Li+ flux through the PP separator. And the highly conductive CNTs on the second layer act as a second collector to accelerate the reversible conversion of sulfide species. The synergistic effect of LP and CNTs further increases the electrolyte wettability and reaction kinetics of cells with a modified separator and suppresses the shuttle effect and growth of Li dendrite. Consequently, the LSBs present much enhanced rate performance and cyclic performance. It is expected that this study may generate an executable tactic for interface engineering of separator to accelerate the industrial application process of LSBs.
Designing of multifunctional and flame retardant separator towards safer high-performance lithium-sulfur batteries

Abstract:Owing to unprecedented merits such as high theoretical capacity, superior energy density and low cost, lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) show a bright future both in scientific and industrial areas. Whereas, the inherent issues, including highly insulating character, undesired shuttle behavior and lithium dendrites growth, are seriously impeding its practical usage. Here, a metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) derived N, S co-doped carbon nanotube hollow architecture confining with CoS2 nanoparticles (CoS2/NSCNHF) modified separator is designed to surmount these obstacles. Compared with Celgard separator, this designed separator shows obviously enhanced flame retardancy, giving 73.1% and 53.0% reductions in peak heat release rate and total heat release, separately. Concretely, its hollow structure, conductive feature, electrocatalytic activity and Lewis acid-base interaction enable the efficient inhibition on shuttle behavior as well as boost in polysulfides conversion kinetics. The cell with modified separator delivers a high discharge capacity of 1,284.5 mAh·g−1. After running for 100 cycles, a discharge capacity of 661.3 mAh·g−1 is remained. Markedly, the suppression on lithium dendrites growth is also observed, manifesting the enhanced battery safety. Overall, this work may shed light on the effective usage of MOFs-derived hierarchical composite in achieving LSBs with high electrochemical performance as well as safety.

“Three‐in‐one” Strategy: Heat Regulation and Conversion Enhancement of a Multifunctional Separator for Safer Lithium–sulfur Batteries

Abstract:AbstractThe safety problems encountered with lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) hinder their development for practical applications. Herein, a highly thermally conductive separator was constructed by cross‐weaving super‐aligned carbon nanotubes (SA‐C) on super‐aligned boron nitride@carbon nanotubes (SA‐BC) to create a composite film (SA‐BC/SA‐C). This separator was used to fabricate safe LSBs with improved electrochemical performance. The highly aligned separator structure created a uniform thermal field that could rapidly dissipate heat accumulated during continuous operation due to internal resistance, which prevented the development of extremely high temperatures. The array of boron nitride nanosheets endowed the composite separator with a large number of adsorption sites, while the highly graphitized carbon nanotube skeleton accelerated the catalytic conversion of high‐valence polysulfides into low‐valence polysulfides. The arrayed molecular brush design enabled the regulation of local current density and ion flux, and considerably alleviated the growth of lithium dendrites, thus promoting the smooth deposition of Li metal. Consequently, a battery constructed with the SA‐BC/SA‐C separator showed a good discharge capacity of 685.2 mAh g−1 over 300 cycles (a capacity decay of 0.026% per cycle) at 2 C and 60°C. This “three‐in‐one” multifunctional separator design strategy constitutes a new path forward for overcoming the safety problems of LSBs.
A polysulfides adsorption strategy through cation-anion interactions for achieving high-safety lithium-sulfur batteries in multiple scenarios

Abstract:The widespread application of lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) is hindered by challenges such as the shuttle effect of polysulfides (LiPSs), slow reaction kinetics, and fire safety concerns. In this study, surface-functionalized boron nitride nanosheets (ChBN) are prepared and employed as functional separator coatings, enabling multiple application scenarios of LSBs. Specifically, a creative strategy of cation-anion interactions is constructed through the strong chemisorption of N + on the ChBN surface to S n- in LiPSs. In addition, the boron nitride and N + show synergistic effects on adsorption-catalysis, further facilitating the rapid and sufficient deposition of Li 2 S. The prepared LSBs with ChBN + SP/PP separators exhibit excellent cycle stability (an ultralow capacity degradation of 0.034 % per cycle over 500 cycles at 2C). These LSBs are available in a wide temperature range of −20 to 60 °C, offering a capacity of 1208 mA h/g at 60 °C and 919 mA h/g at −20 °C. Furthermore, the presence of ChBN effectively improves the fire-safety of pouch batteries through the condensed-phase flame retardant mechanism. This simple fabrication process of ChBN is effective and favorable for large-scale manufacturing, which provides a feasible method for the development of high-safety LSBs.

Abstract:A "three birds with one stone" strategy for safe and high‐performance lithium–sulfur batteries is proposed via facile immobilized phosphazene microspheres with tannic acid (TA) as cross‐linker, which simultaneously realize fire resistance of electrolytes and separators, chemical adsorption of lithium polysulfide, and stabilization of lithium metal anode. Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) have attracted extensive attention owing to their high energy density and abundant sulfur resources. However, LSBs are still restricted by the unsatisfactory electrochemical performance resulting from the shuttle effect of lithium polysulfide (LiPSs), and the potential fire hazard caused by inflammable ether electrolytes and polyolefin separators. Herein, a facile immobilization strategy for hexachlorocyclotriphosphazene (HCCP) is creatively applied to address the above issues simultaneously. Insoluble HCCP cross‐linked microspheres (H‐CMP) are firstly obtained at ambient temperature using tannic acid (TA) as a cross‐linking agent and then a multifunctional separator coating is constructed based on H‐CMP. The released phosphorus‐related radicals from H‐CMP in wide temperatures effectively prevent the combustion of electrolytes and separators, and hence improve the fire safety of the Li–S pouch cell. Furthermore, H‐CMP availably chemisorbs LiPSs to interdict the shuttle effect, thereby dramatically improving the electrochemical performance of LSBs. The effectiveness of this strategy is also verified in high sulfur loading (6.38 mg cm‐2), high temperature (50 °C), and Li–S pouch cells. More importantly, H‐CMP exhibits sufficient stability for Li metal and suppression of Li dendrites. This facile immobilization strategy for multifunctional phosphazenes provides a competitive option for the large‐scale fabrication of high‐safety and high‐performance LSBs.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries are one of the most promising next-generation batteries due to their high theoretical specific capacity, but are impeded by the low utilization of insulating sulfur, unstable morphology of the lithium metal anode, and transport of soluble polysulfides. Here, by coating a layer of nano titanium dioxide and carbon black onto a commercial polypropylene separator, we demonstrate a new composite separator that can confine the polysulfides on the cathode side, forming a catholyte chamber, and at the same time block the dendritic lithium on the anode side. Lithium-sulfur batteries using this separator show a high initial capacity of 1206 mA h g(-1) and a low capacity decay rate of 0.1% per cycle at 0.5C. Analyses reveal the electrocatalytic effect and the excellent dendrite-blocking capability of the similar to 7 mu m thick coating.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li–S) battery has attracted widespread research interest owing to its broad application prospects in high-density energy storage. However, the notorious "shuttle effect" is still the biggest obstacle to its practical application. In this work, the synergistic inhibitory effect on polysulfides shuttling has proposed by introducing a coating of ultrasmall Fe3O4 nanoparticles modified carboxylated carbon nanotubes (3O4) on a commercial separator. The carboxylated carbon nanotube networks can act as both physical barrier and ion shielding layer, preventing the migration of polysulfides. Meanwhile, the ultrasmall Fe3O4 nanoparticles can act as polysulfide-trapping centers to anchor polysulfides via robust chemical adsorption. In addition, the highly conductive 3O4 coating can act as "upper current collector", promoting the kinetic conversion reaction of sulfur species and facilitating the reutilization of active materials. The synergistic effect of the ultralight separator coating (areal weight 1.79 g m−2) enables the Li–S batteries showing outstanding cycle stability (the capacity decay is as low as 0.032% per cycle at 1 C over 2000 cycles), excellent rate performance and superior anti-self-discharge capability. The proposed combination strategy paves the way to the simple and scalable preparation of advanced separators.

Abstract:Lithium–sulfur batteries (LSBs) hold promise for use in next-generation high-energy-density energy storage systems. However, the commercial application of LSBs is hindered by the shuttle effect of polysulfides. In this study, we synthesized a covalent organic framework material (PY−DHBD−COF) and employed it to modify the separators of LSBs in order to buffer the shuttle effect of polysulfides. A modified separator, involving PY−DHBD−COF coating of the commercial Celgard 2500 PP separator, is prepared via a vacuum-assisted self-assembly method. The PY−DHBD−COF features hydroxyl and imine bonds, which can adsorb lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) and buffer the shuttle effect. The PY−DHBD−COF coating exhibits a thin thickness and oriented nanochannels, facilitating electrolyte wetting and Li+ transport. As a result, the LSBs with PY−DHBD−COF-modified separators exhibit a high specific capacity of 373 mAh g−1 at 4 C with only 0.005% capacity decay per cycle after 450 cycles at 2 C, demonstrating an excellent cycling performance.
A Lithium‐Affinitive Covalent Organic Polymer Network Functionalized Separator for Dendrite‐Free and High‐Durability Lithium–Sulfur Batteries under Harsh Conditions

Abstract:The modification of commercial polyolefin separators with covalent organic polymer networks enables accelerated Li─Solvent/LiPS‐solvent dissolution, enhanced lithium‐ion transport, and suppression of the shuttle effect, resulting in dendrite‐free and durable Li─S batteries. The study highlights the significance of interface modification and offers a promising approach for designing multifunctional separators in high‐energy rechargeable batteries. Lithium–Sulfur (Li─S) batteries are renowned for their high theoretical specific capacity and cost‐effectiveness. Nevertheless, their performance could be impeded by obstacles including lithium dendrite growth and lithium polysulfide (LiPS) shuttle, particularly under harsh conditions. Herein, an economical strategy is reported for modifying polyolefin separators (PP) with covalent organic polymer networks (TPE) to alter Li solvent structure, enhance lithium‐ion transport, and suppress shuttle effects. Combining in situ/ex situ characterization and theoretical calculations, it is demonstrated that the lithiophilic groups (‐C═N‐) in the TPE@PP separator form strong interaction with lithium, facilitating the dissociation of Li─Solvent/LiPS‐solvent to release freer lithium ion and shape a stable solid electrolyte interface rich in LiF and Li3N. The polymer network serves as a "highway" that accelerates Li transport and promotes uniform nucleation behavior. Therefore, the Li|TPE@PP|CNT/S cell enables 60% capacity retention after 2000 cycles at 1.0 C and exhibits stable cycling performance of 100 cycles from ‐40 to 80 °C. Moreover, the pouch cell maintains a capacity of more than 600 mA h g−1 after 30 cycles at 0 °C. This study provides a promising avenue for the application of high‐performance batteries in harsh environment from the perspective of separator engineering.

Abstract:The shuttle effect of soluble lithium polysulfides (LiPSs) is primarily responsible for the unstable performance of lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries, which has severely impeded their continued development. In order to solve this problem, a special strategy is proposed. Specifically, ultra-thin NiCo based layered double hydroxides (named LDH or NiCo-LDH) nanosheets are implanted into a pre-designed 3D interconnected carbon networks (SPC) to obtain porous composite materials (named SPC-LDH). During the operation of the battery, the 3D interconnected porous carbon mesh was the first to rapidly adsorb LiPSs, and then the LDH on the surface of the carbon mesh was used to realize the catalytic conversion of LiPSs. This facilitates the electrochemical conversion reaction between S substances while addressing the "shuttle effect". As a result, the battery maintains a discharge capacity of 1401.9, 1114.3, 975.5, 880.7, 760.4 and 679.6 mAh g −1 at the current densities of 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3C, respectively. After 200 cycles at 2C, the battery's capacity stays at 732.9 mAh g −1 , meaning that the average rate of capacity decay is only 0.007 % per cycle. Moreover, in-situ XRD demonstrates the critical function of PP/SPC-LDH separators in inhibiting LiPSs and encouraging Li 2 S transformation. The strong affinity of SPC-LDH for Li 2 S 6 is also confirmed by density functional theory (DFT) calculation, offering more theoretical support for the synergistic adsorption process. This work offers a compelling method to develop modified separator materials that can counteract the "shuttle effect" in Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are of great interest due to their high theoretical energy density and potentially low cost. However, two of the key issues hindering their commercialization are the polysulfide shuttling and Li-dendrite growth, which result in severe capacity decay and serious safety hazards. Herein, liquid-phase delaminated birnessite (HxMnO2+x) nanosheets along with graphene and carbon nanotubes are utilized for the first time to create an "electronegative" coating layer for Li-S batteries to suppress the polysulfide shuttling and Li-dendrite growth. The as-prepared coating layer enables stable cycling of the Li-S battery with a low capacity decay rate of 0.04% per cycle over 1000 cycles at 1C. In addition, a Li-symmetrical cell with the coating layer shows suppressed dendrite growth even after being cycled over 1000 hours at 1 mA cm(-2). This excellent performance is ascribed, in part, to the synergistic effect of the chemical and electrostatic interactions among polysulfides, Li ions, and [MnO2+x](x-) ions, resulting in a homogeneous Li-ion flux distribution and a mitigated polysulfide shuttling. The proposed concept of an "electronegative" bifunctional coating layer illustrates a simple and effective way to develop highly stable and safe Li-S batteries.
A Separator with Double Coatings of Li 4 Ti 5 O 12 and Conductive Carbon for Li-S Battery of Good Electrochemical Performance.

Abstract:The market demand for energy pushes researchers to pay a lot of attention to Li-S batteries. However, the 'shuttle effect', the corrosion of lithium anodes, and the formation of lithium dendrites make the poor cycling performances (especially under high current densities and high sulfur loading) of Li-S batteries, which limit their commercial applications. Here, a separator is prepared and modified with Super P and LTO (abbreviation SPLTOPD) through a simple coating method. The LTO can improve the transport ability of Li cations, and the Super P can reduce the charge transfer resistance. The prepared SPLTOPD can effectively barrier the pass-through of polysulfides, catalyze the reactions of polysulfides into S , and increase the ionic conductivity of the Li-S batteries. The SPLTOPD can also prevent the aggregation of insulating sulfur species on the surface of the cathode. The assembled Li-S batteries with the SPLTOPD can cycle 870 cycles at 5 C with the capacity attenuation of 0.066% per cycle. When the sulfur loading is up to 7.6 mg cm , the specific discharge capacity at 0.2 C can reach 839 mAh g , and the surface of lithium anode after 100 cycles does not show the existence lithium dendrites or a corrosion layer. This work provides an effective way for the preparation of commercial separators for Li-S batteries.

Abstract:The slow redox kinetics in the sulfur cathode and lithium (Li)-dendrite growth on the lithium anode leads to significant capacity degradation and serious safety incidents for lithium-sulfur (Li–S) batteries. Herein, a bifunctional polypropylene separator with nest-like MnOOH network synergistic carbon layer (MnOOH/C/PP) via facile in situ synthesis method was designed as an effective host for both sulfur cathode and lithium anode. A series of electrochemical tests and non– in situ scanning electron microscope characterization confirmed that the as-prepared MnOOH/C layer has good physical/chemical adsorption and catalytic activity of polysulfides. Furthermore, the Li||Li symmetric batteries exhibited inhibited dendrite growth even after undergoing cycling for more than 2200 h at 1 mA/cm 2 . Consequently, the Li–S battery based on a functional MnOOH/C/PP separator shows high discharge capacity (1358 mAh/g at 0.1 C), good rate capability (755 mAh/g at 3 C) and stable cyclability (0.049 % decay per cycle over 700 cycles). Particularly, an areal capacity can reach 3.55 mAh/cm 2 even at a high sulfur loading of 7.02 mg/cm 2 and a high-capacity retention rate of 90.2 % remained over 200 cycles, demonstrating the viability of this simple and efficient strategy for creating highly stable and safe Li–S batteries.

Abstract:Separators, as indispensable parts of LSBs (lithium-sulfur batteries), play a cucial role in inhibiting dendrite growth and suppressing the shuttle of lithium polysulfide (LiPSs). Herein, we prepared a functional carbon nanotube (CNT) and Fe-based Prussian blue (PB)@MXene/polypropylene (PP) composite separator using a facile vacuum filtration approach. The CNTs and MXene nanosheets are excellent electronic conductors that can enhance the composite separator electrical conductivity, while Fe-based Prussian blue with a rich pore structure can effectively suppress the migration by providing physical space to anchor soluble LiPSs and retain it as cathode active material. Additionally, MXene nanosheets can be well attached to Fe-based Prussian blue by an electrostatic interaction and contribute to the physical barriers that inhibit the shuttle of long-chain soluble Li2Sn (4 ≤ n ≤ 8). When used as a lithium-sulfur (Li-S) cell membrane with a functional coating layer of CNT+PB@MXene facing the cathode side, the batteries reveal a high initial discharge capacity (1042.6 mAh g-1 at 0.2 C), outstanding rate capability (90% retention of capacity at 1.0 C) and high reversible capacity (674.1 mAh g-1 after 200 cycles at 1.0 V). Of note, separator modification is a feasible method to improve the electrochemical performance of LSBs.

Abstract:In this work, we have successfully prepared a novel separator modified with N, S co-doped carbon framework (named NSPCF) with confined CoS2 nanoparticles and rooted carbon nanotubes material (named 2) to apply for high-performance Lithium-Sulfur batteries (Li-S batteries). Robust carbon structure with large specific surface can act as a physical barrier and possess physical adsorption effect on lithium polysulfides (LiPSs). In addition, highly-conductive carbon can improve integral conductivity, leading to the fast charge transport and reaction kinetics. Also, doping heteroatoms could form more active sites to adsorb LiPSs strongly so that modified separator could inhibit the shuttle effect effectively. Moreover, the presence of CoS2 further enhances the ability of modified separator to trap LiPSs owing to the Lewis acid-base action. As a result, the 2@C-150 battery can deliver initial discharge capacities of 863.0, 776.2, 649.1 and 489.4 mAh g-1 at 0.1, 0.5, 1 and 2 C with a high sulfur loading of 2.04 mg cm-2, respectively. Notably, when turning the current density back to 0.1 C, its discharge capacity can recover to 1008.7 mAh g-1. In addition, the modified separators exhibit outstanding capacities to restrain the growth of lithium dendrites. It is noteworthy that the flame retardant performances of Li-S batteries are improved dramatically owing to the novel structures of modified separators. This rationally designed separator endows Li-S batteries with higher safety and excellent electrochemical performances, providing a feasible strategy for practical application of Li-S batteries.
