Abstract:Green synthesis of nanoparticles is an effective, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly approach to produce biocompatible nanoparticles with broad-spectrum bioactivities. In the current study, lactic acid bacterium-derived exopolysaccharide (EPS) was explored to biologically synthesize green silver nanoparticles (EPS-AgNPs). The antibacterial and antioxidant activities of EPS-AgNPs were investigated by agar well diffusion and DPPH tests, respectively. Subsequently, EPS-AgNPs and chemical AgNPs were characterized, and their physicochemical properties were compared. According to 16 S rRNA gene sequencing, the EPS-producing lactic acid bacterium showed 97.77% similarity to Enterococcus faecium . EPS-AgNPs exhibited inhibitory effects on Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacterial pathogens. Additionally, EPS-AgNPs showed considerable ability (84%) to quench DPPH free radicals. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) showed the involvement of EPS's functional groups, including hydroxyl, carbonyl, and aldehyde groups, in synthesizing nanoparticles. Scanning electron microscopy revealed a quasi-spherical morphology for both the EPS-AgNPs and chemically synthesized AgNPs, while X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis confirmed their crystalline nature. The high metal content of chemical Ag-NPs (89.79%) was in good agreement with its high thermal stability in TGA results. Additionally, lower thermal stability and less Ag content (65.93%) of EPS-AgNPs, along with their smooth surfaces, indicated the capping role of EPS. EPS-AgNPs showed Z-average size, PI value, and zeta potential of 158.31 nm, 0.29, and − 17.75 mV, respectively. Collectively, the present study revealed that Enterococcus faecium -derived EPS acted as reducing, capping, and stabilizing agents in green synthesizing EPS-AgNPs with potential applications in medical and food-packaging industries.

Abstract:Microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) excreted from microorganisms were a complex natural biological polymer mixture of proteins and polysaccharides, which played an important roles in the transport of metals, such as Ag+. Electroactive bacteria, is an important class of environmental microorganisms, which can use iron or manganese mineral as terminal electron acceptors to generate energy for biosynthesis and cell maintenance. In this work, the EPS extracted of three electroactive bacteria (Shewanella oneidensis, Aeromonas hydrophila, and Pseudomonas putida) were used for reducing Ag+ and forming silver nanoparticles (AgNPs). Results showed that all the three microbial EPS could reduce Ag+ to AgNPs. The formed AgNPs were characterized in depth by the UV-visible spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The main components in the EPS from the three electroactive bacteria were analyzed. The presence of cytochrome c in these EPS was confirmed, and they were found to contribute to the reduction of Ag+ to AgNPs. The results indicated that the EPS of electroactive bacteria could act as a reductant for AgNPs synthesis and could provide new information to understand the fate of metals and their metal nanoparticles in the natural environments.
Fabricating Antibacterial and Antioxidant Electrospun Hydrophilic Polyacrylonitrile Nanofibers Loaded with AgNPs by Lignin-Induced In-Situ Method

Abstract:Concerning the environmental hazards owing to the chemical-based synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), this study aimed to investigate the possibility of synthesizing AgNPs on the surface polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers utilizing biomacromolecule lignin. SEM observations revealed that the average diameters of the produced nanofibers were slightly increased from ~512 nm to ~673 nm due to several factors like-swellings that happened during the salt treatment process, surface-bound lignin, and the presence of AgNPs. The presence of AgNPs was validated by transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. The amount of synthesized AgNPs on PAN nanofibers was found to be dependent on both precursor silver salt and reductant lignin concentration. Fourier transform infrared-attenuated total reflectance (FTIR-ATR) spectra confirm the presence of lignin on PAN nanofibers. Although the X-ray diffraction pattern did not show any AgNPs band, the reduced intensity of the stabilized PAN characteristics bands at 2θ = 17.28° and 29.38° demonstrated some misalignment of PAN polymeric chains. The water contact angle (WCA) of hydrophobic PAN nanofibers was reduced from 112.6 ± 4.16° to 21.4 ± 5.03° for the maximum AgNPs coated specimen. The prepared membranes exhibited low thermal stability and good swelling capacity up to 20.1 ± 0.92 g/g and 18.05 ± 0.68 g/g in distilled water and 0.9 wt% NaCl solution, respectively. Coated lignin imparts antioxidant activity up to 78.37 ± 0.12% at 12 h of incubation. The resultant nanofibrous membranes showed a proportional increase in antibacterial efficacy with the rise in AgNPs loading against both Gram-positive S. aureus and Gram-negative E. coli bacterial strains by disc diffusion test (AATCC 147-1998). Halos for maximum AgNPs loading was calculated to 18.89 ± 0.15 mm for S. aureus and 21.38 ± 0.17 mm for E. coli. An initial burst release of silver elements within 24 h was observed in the inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) test, and the release amounts were proportionally expansive with the increase in Ag contents. Our results demonstrated that such types of composite nanofibers have a strong potential to be used in biomedicine.
Silver Nanoparticles Reinforced (Poly-(L-lysine)/hyaluronic Acid) Free-Standing Films: the Mechanical Strength and Antibacterial Activity.

Abstract:Free-standing polyelectrolyte multilayer films which are composed of biomacromolecules, such as polysaccharides and/or polypeptides, have attracted numerous attentions in biomedical fields. However, the poor mechanical strength makes their future applications difficult. In the present work, we used the pH-amplified Poly-(l-lysine)/Hyaluronic acid (PLL/HA) film as the template and in situ synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) in a green way. It was confirmed that the size of AgNPs in the films was largely dependent on the loading method of Ag+ (pre-complex vs. post-loading). Meanwhile, the loading amount of AgNPs and their distribution in the films could be controlled by the films outermost layer (PLL vs. HA) as observed under electron microscopies. The reduced AgNPs were used here as both bactericidal agent and mechanical reinforcer. The anti-bacterial activity of the films with AgNPs was verified by the Kirby-Bauer assay, and film cytotoxicity was examined by MTT examination. The effects of AgNPs' amount, size and distribution on the mechanical properties of films were evaluated by both nanoindentation and micro tensile tests. The films embedded with AgNPs of smaller size and well-distribution throughout the films gained the maximal enhancement on mechanical strength and preserved acceptable cytocompatibility. The in situ UV reduction of silver nanoparticles in polyelectrolyte multilayer films with controllable internal structures could provide a facile way to ensure the films with enhanced mechanical properties as well as effective anti-bacterial and normal-cell-supporting capabilities.
Lactobacillus species mediated synthesis of silver nanoparticles and their antibacterial activity against opportunistic pathogens in vitro

Abstract:Introduction: Application of lactic acid bacteria for synthesis of silver (AG) nanoparticles (NPs) could be a good ecological friendly alternative to chemical and physical methods. The objective of this study was to investigate the biosynthesis of silver NPs using Lactobacillus strains and to compare their monosaccharide composition of capsular exopolysaccharides and the antibacterial activity of synthesized nanoparticles. Methods: The washed cells of 22 Lactobacillus strains were used for in vitro silver nanoparticle biosynthesis from silver nitrate solution. The NPs formation was confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analysis. TEM micrographs were used for the evaluation of NPs size. The monosaccharide composition of capsular exopolysaccharides was determined using GC/MS analysis. The antimicrobial activity was determined by agar well diffusion assay. Results: The capsular layers of Lactobacillus strains contained heteropolysaccharides that were composed mostly of glucose, mannose, galactose and rhamnose in a different molar ratio. It was found that Ag NPs with large size (30.65 ± 5.81 nm) obtained from L. acidophilus 58p were more active against S. epidermidis, E. coli, K. pneumonia,S. flexneri and S. sonnei compared with Ag NPs from L. plantarum 92T (19.92 ± 3.4 nm). Conclusion: The size and antibacterial activities of Ag NPs were strain-dependent and such characteristics may be due to the capsular biopolymer composition of Lactobacillus strains used for Ag NPs synthesis.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are broad-spectrum antibacterial agents that are safe for the environment and the human body. To achieve a balance between material functionality, degradability, and safety of AgNPs, the peanut red skin (PSE)/polyphenol-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrin (HPβCD)/AgNPs were prepared for the first time by ultrasound-triggered molecular encapsulation and biosynthesis for hydrophilic fusion of medicine and small molecules. Additionally, a novel “controlled release” sodium alginate (SA)-based hydrogel was developed and medicine/small-molecule self-assembled PSE/HPβCD/AgNPs were introduced into the three-dimensional network structure of the SA hydrogels. The SA-based hydrogels exhibited excellent mechanical and rheological properties. In different pH conditions, the hydrogels exhibit differing release and expansion behaviors, and the maximum cumulative release of AgNPs was 98.21% at pH > 6.8. Furthermore, the hydrogels exhibited strong antibacterial effects against pathogenic bacteria. They also showed excellent antioxidant properties and cytocompatibility. These advantages highlight the potential utility of the developed hydrogels for biomedical applications and agricultural fields.

Abstract:The biosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) presents an innovative and sustainable approach in nanotechnology with promising applications in fields such as medicine, food safety, and pharmacology. In this study, AgNPs were successfully synthesized using the probiotic strain Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus (BCRC16000), addressing challenges related to stability, biocompatibility, and scalability that are common in conventional nanoparticle production methods. The formation of AgNPs was indicated by a color change from yellow to brown, and UV–visible spectrophotometry confirmed their presence with a characteristic absorption peak at 443 nm. Furthermore, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy revealed the involvement of biomolecules in reducing silver ions, which suggests their role in stabilizing the nanoparticles. In addition, field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) showed significant morphological and structural changes. At the same time, dynamic light scattering (DLS) and zeta potential analyses provided valuable insights such as average size (199.7 nm), distribution, and stability, reporting a polydispersity index of 0.239 and a surface charge of −36.3 mV. Notably, the AgNPs demonstrated strong antibacterial activity and photocatalytic efficiency, underscoring their potential for environmental and biomedical applications. Therefore, this study highlights the effectiveness of Lacticaseibacillus rhamnosus in the biosynthesis of AgNPs, offering valuable antibacterial and photocatalytic properties with significant industrial and scientific implications.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were rapidly synthesized using an exopolysaccharide from Arthrobacter sp. B4 (B4-EPS). The optimum condition for AgNPs synthesis was under the concentration of 5 g/L B4-EPS and 1 mM AgNO 3 at 80°C between pH 7.0 and 8.0. The resulting AgNPs displayed a face-centred-cubic structure with the size range from 9 nm to 72 nm. Further analysis showed that flocculation and reduction of B4-EPS played a pivotal role in the formation of AgNPs. Furthermore, these nanoparticles exhibited great stability, excellent antimicrobial activity, and low phytotoxicity. The aforementioned data provide a feasible and efficient approach for green synthesis of AgNPs using microbial polysaccharides with flocculation and reduction activity, which will be promising in medical filed.

Abstract:We present the in situ synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) through ionotropic gelation utilizing the biodegradable saccharides lactose (Lac) and alginate (Alg). The lactose reduced silver ions to form AgNPs. The crystallite structure of the nanocomposite AgNPs@Lac/Alg, with a mean size of 4–6 nm, was confirmed by analytical techniques. The nanocomposite exhibited high catalytic performance in degrading the pollutants methyl orange and rhodamine B. The antibacterial activity of the nanocomposite is pH-dependent, related to the alterations in surface properties of the nanocomposite at different pH values. At pH 6, the nanocomposite demonstrated the highest antibacterial activity. These findings suggest that this nanocomposite has the potential to be tailored for specific applications in environmental and medicinal treatments, making it a highly promising material.

Abstract:Lumpy corn stalk is conventionally used as interlayer filling material in plywood, while high temperature and humidity in tropical and subtropical areas are easy to cause bacteria growth on plywood. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are one of efficient antibacterial metal nanoparticles due to their excellent broad-spectrum antibacterial properties. But most of these AgNPs are normally in solution and easy to aggregate, which limits their utilization. Besides, the synthesis of AgNPs always needs chemical reducing agents, which can cause environmental and cost problems. In this study, lumpy corn stalk with honeycomb-like structure acted as green reducing agent and stabilizer to in situ synthesize AgNPs, the obtained antibacterial lumpy corn stalk (CS@AgNPs) could be used as interlayer filling material to protect plywood from bacteria erosion. Durable antibacterial study showed that the bacteriostatic properties of lumpy CS@AgNPs against E. coli and S. aureus were stronger and more durable than commercial Ag+ spray and hydrogel. The antibacterial mechanism may be that the controlled-released AgNPs destroyed the morphological structure of bacteria by penetrating into the bacterial cell membrane, following by leaking cellular content. Notably, the final release amount of AgNPs from lumpy CS@AgNPs after 12 days in buffer solution was only 0.011 mg/L, which was 9 times lower than the domestic drinking water limit presented by United States Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA). The plywood with lump CS@AgNPs as interlayer filling material could keep efficient and durable bacteria killing activity in 21 days, which could be used safely in food packaging, furniture and flooring fields.
Novel strategies for the preparation of nano-silver pectin sponge composite and its antibacterial properties

Abstract:Biodegradable sponges are currently attracting significant attention; however, the development of safe materials with high levels of antimicrobial activity remains a major challenge. Doping with silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) can effectively solve this problem. In this study, pectin sponges (PE-S) and nano-silver pectin sponges (PE-S/Ag) were synthesized in situ by using the freeze-drying method. The prepared sponge samples were then characterized with various tools. UV‒Vis spectroscopy was used to investigate the in situ synthesis of the AgNPs, FT-IR spectroscopy and XPS were used to investigate changes in the functional groups of the sponge samples, and SEM images were used to confirm the homogeneous distribution of AgNPs in the PE-S/Ag sponge. Our results suggested that the physical and chemical properties of the PE-S/Ag sponges were better than those of the PE-S sponges. The water absorption levels of the PE-S/Ag and PE-S sponges were three times and twice as high as that of gauze, respectively. Antibacterial tests showed that the minimum inhibitory concentrations of the PE-S/Ag sponge were 42 and 83 μg/mL against Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus , respectively. Cytotoxicity and coagulation assays showed that the two sponge samples were nontoxic to cells and had good coagulation effects. The silver ion (Ag + ) release assay was used to analyse the pattern of Ag + release from the PE-S/Ag sponges.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were widely used in the antibacterial field because of their excellent antibacterial properties. In this study, we used hesperidin and pectin as reductants and stabilizers, and prepared uniform and stable Hesperidin-Pectin AgNPs (HP-AgNPs) by a simple microwave-assisted process. Increasing the proportion of hesperidin, P-AgNPs, HP-AgNPs1, HP-AgNPs2 and H-AgNPs were obtained respectively. With the increase of hesperidin ratio, the mean particle size and zeta potential increased gradually. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis showed that Ag+ was reduced by hesperidin and pectin. Antibacterial tests showed that HP-AgNPs2 showed the MIC values of 66.7 μg/mL against E. coli. In addition, HP-AgNPs2 was selected to clarify its antibacterial mechanism against E. coli. Morphological experiments showed that HP-AgNPs2 stress caused damage to the cell wall of E. coli, as well as leakage of its contents and an increase in reactive oxygen species (ROS). On the other hand, the release of Ag+ during cell co-culture was studied and the results showed that most of the Ag+ released was taken up by E. coli. The synergistic effect of hesperidin and pectin resulted in a significant enhancement of the antibacterial properties of AgNPs. These preliminary data suggest that HP-AgNPs has good antibacterial activity and may be developed as an effective antibacterial nanomaterial.

Abstract:Abstract With multidrug-resistant bacterial pathogens on the rise, there is a strong research focus on alternative antibacterial treatments that could replace or complement classical antibiotics. Metallic nanoparticles, and in particular silver nanoparticles (AgNPs), have been shown to kill bacterial biofilms effectively, but their chemical synthesis often involves environmentally unfriendly by-products. Recent studies have shown that microbial and plant extracts can be used for the environmentally friendly synthesis of AgNPs. Herein we report a procedure for producing AgNPs using a putative Cedecea sp. strain isolated from soil. The isolated bacterial strain showed a remarkable potential for producing spherical, crystalline and stable AgNPs characterized by UV–visible spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy, dynamic light scattering, and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. The concentration of produced nanoparticles was 1.31 μg/μl with a negative surface charge of − 15.3 mV and nanoparticles size ranging from 10–40 nm. The AgNPs was tested against four pathogenic microorganisms S. epidermidis , S. aureus , E. coli and P. aeruginosa . The nanoparticles exhibited strong minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of 12.5 and 6.25 μg/μl and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) values of 12.5 and 12.5 μg/mL against E. coli and P. aeruginosa , respectively. One distinguishing feature of AgNPs produced by Cedecea sp. extracts is their extreme stability. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry and thermogravimetric analysis demonstrated that the produced AgNPs are stable for periods exceeding one year. This means that their strong antibacterial effects, demonstrated against E. coli and P. aeruginosa biofilms, can be expected to persist during extended periods.

Structural characterization and biological activities of a novel polysaccharide from Glehnia littoralis and its application in preparation of nano-silver

Abstract:A novel polysaccharide (GLP) with a molecular weight of 1.37 × 105 Da was purified from the roots of G. littoralis. Using monosaccharide composition, methylation analysis, GC–MS, 1D and 2D NMR, the structure of GLP was determined to be a 1 → 4)-α-D-Glcp glycoside linkage, while the terminal group of 1→)-α-D-Glcp was bonded to the main chain via O-6. Then, GLP-NPs were prepared by nano-precipitation method, the particle size of GLP-NPs was 288.4 nm and PDI was 0.340. GLP-NPs-AgNPs were prepared using GLP-NPs as reducing agent. GLP-NPs-AgNPs were characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer (UV–Vis), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscope (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The yield of GLP-NPs-AgNPs was 38.77%, the particle size was 12.5 nm and the chelation rate of silver nanoparticles with polysaccharides was 67.5%. GLP-NPs-AgNPs had better antioxidant and antibacterial activities than GLP and GLP-NPs. Abstract:To evaluate silver nanoparticles’ (AgNPs) therapeutic and clinical potentials, antibacterial action, blood compatibility, and antiplatelet activities are the main concerns for toxicity profiling. Heat-denatured lysozyme-mediated formulation stabilized the AgNPs, thereby providing more bactericidal activity and blood compatibility. The study of the synthesis of AgNPs suggests the rapid and cost-effective formulation of AgNPs by one-step reaction using a 10:1 ratio of silver nitrate and lysozyme by incubating at 60 °C for two hours. Characterization of AgNPs was analyzed by UV–Visible spectroscopy, DLS, TEM, EDX, XRD, AFM, and FTIR, followed by antibacterial, hemocompatibility, and platelet aggregation testing. The average size of synthesized AgNPs was found to be 94.10 nm with 0.45 mV zeta potential and 0.293 polydispersity index by DLS. The TEM and EXD results indicated homogeneously 28.08 nm spherical-shaped pure formations of AgNPs. The XRD peaks showed the synthesis of small AgNPs with a crystallite size of 22.88 nm, while the AFM confirmed the homogeneity and smoothness of the monodispersed AgNPs. The FTIR spectra specified the coating of the lysozyme-derived amide group on the AgNPs surface, which provides stability and functionality of nanoparticles. The antibacterial activity of AgNPs was remarkable against six pathogenic bacteria and three multidrug resistance (MDR) strains (i.e., Escherichia coli, Klebsiella aerogenes, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa), which exhibited inhibition zones with diameters ranging between 13.5 ± 0.2 mm to 19.0 ± 0.3 mm. The non-hemolytic nature of the AgNPs was calculated by percentage hemolysis with four concentrations. The negative result of platelet aggregation using platelet-rich plasma suggests the antiplatelet effect of AgNPs. Only minor hemolysis of 6.17% in human erythrocytes and mild platelet aggregation of 1.98% were induced, respectively, by the use of 1000 μL of 1 mM AgNPs, which contains approximately 107.8 μg silver. The results indicated that the antiplatelet potency and non-hemolytic nature with the antibacterial action of the lysozyme functionalized AgNPs have a good chance to be used to solve in-stent restenosis and thrombosis issues of the coronary stent and may also have a possibility to use in vaccination to resolve the blood clotting problem. So, the optimized biogenic formulation of AgNPs offers promising opportunities to be used as a therapeutic agent.

Abstract:Whereas the antimicrobial mechanisms of silver have been extensively studied and exploited for numerous applications, little is known about the associated bacterial adaptation and defense mechanisms that could hinder disinfection efficacy or mitigate unintended impacts to microbial ecosystem services associated with silver release to the environment. Here, we demonstrate that extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) produced by bacteria constitute a permeability barrier with reducing constituents that mitigate the antibacterial activity of silver ions (Ag+). Specifically, manipulation of EPS in Escherichia coli suspensions (e.g., removal of EPS attached to cells by sonication/centrifugation or addition of EPS at 200 mg L-1) demonstrated its critical role in hindering intracellular silver penetration and enhancing cell growth in the presence of Ag+ (up to 0.19 mg L-1). High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) combined with Xray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and energy-dispersive spectrometry (EDS) analyses showed that Ag+ was reduced to silver nanoparticles (AgNPs; 10-30 nm in diameter) that were immobilized within the EPS matrix. Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and C-13 nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectra suggest that Ag+ reduction to AgNPs by the hemiacetal groups of sugars in EPS contributed to immobilization. Accordingly, the amount and composition of EPS produced have important implications on the bactericidal efficacy and potential environmental. impacts of Ag+.

Abstract:Objective: In order to investigate the potential biomedical applications of silver nanoparticle (Ag NP)-immobilized electrospun nanofibers with different surface functionalities. Methods: Silver nanoparticles were immobilized within water-stable electrospun polyethylenimine (PEI)/polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) nanofibers by an in-situ reduction method after complexing Ag + . ions with the free PEI amine groups. The obtained Ag NP-incorporated PEI/PVA nanofibers were then hydroxylated, carboxylated, and acetylated to generate different surface functionalities. Different techniques were employed to characterize the Ag NP-containing nanofibers with different surface functionalities. Results: In vitro antibacterial activity tests show that Ag NP-containing nanofibrous mats have high antibacterial activity and are capable of inhibiting the growth of both S. aureus and E. coli bacteria. Cell viability assay data show that the Ag NP-containing nanofibers are cytocompatible, and those treated by hydroxylation and acetylation display better cytocompatibility than those treated by carboxylation and the pristine non-modified fibers to promote cell adhesion and proliferation. Conclusion: Therefore, the hydroxylated or acetylated Ag NP-containing PEI/PVA nanofibers have a great potential for wound dressing, biological protection and tissue engineering applications.

Abstract:An observant reader of the paper version of Acta Oncologica may have noticed that for some years, every issue was thinner than normal, but also that all issues except the first one during 2006 got thicker again. This is firstly a reflection of a much more restrictive attitude to accept many papers together with an unchanged volume of submissions, with the aim of raising the average quality of the published articles. This has happened, at least based upon the markedly increasing journal impact factor. Secondly, we have during the past year seen a substantial increase in the number of submitted manuscripts from an average of 200 250 for many years to 377 in 2005 and possibly above 500 during 2006. The introduction of the online submission system Manuscript Central† in mid 2005 has contributed to this increase, but greater attractiveness is also likely to be important [1,2]. The proportion of rejected manuscripts (now about 70%) has continued to increase, but the number that ultimately is accepted is higher, and the issues have become thicker again. We believe that all readers of Acta Oncologica and the scientific community appreciate a higher quality on average. For subscribers, it is attractive to open the paper copy, read the content, go through it or bring it home to read, since the chances of finding high quality papers are higher. Although without scientific value, I hear comments like those often. An increased number of citations per article for the first two calendar years (presently 2.4) and many more downloads on the web are more solid evidence of greater attractiveness.
In Situ Fabrication of Silver Nanoparticle‐Decorated Polymeric Vesicles for Antibacterial Applications

Abstract:In this study, cross‐linked vesicles with nitrogen atoms are used as templates for the fabrication of silver nanoparticle (AgNP)‐decorated vesicles. AgNPs are prepared in situ on the vesicle membrane by the reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP), and the produced AgNP‐decorated vesicles exhibit good antibacterial activity against both E. coli and S. aureus. Silver/polymeric vesicle composite nanoparticles with good antibacterial properties were fabricated in this study. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) were prepared in situ on cross‐linked vesicle membranes through the reduction of silver nitrate (AgNO3) using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) via coordination bonding between the Ag+ ions and the nitrogen atoms on the vesicles. X‐ray diffraction (XRD), ultraviolet‐visible spectroscopy (UV‐vis), and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) analyses confirmed the formation of AgNPs on the vesicles. The antibacterial test demonstrated good antibacterial activity against both Gram‐negative bacteria (Escherichia coli) and Gram‐positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus) for the produced AgNP‐decorated vesicles. The minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) values of the AgNP‐decorated vesicles for E. coli and S. aureus were 8.4 and 9.6 μg/mL, respectively. Cell viability analysis on the A549 cells indicated that the toxicity was low when the AgNP concentrations did not exceed the MIC values, and the wound healing test confirmed the good antibacterial properties of the AgNP‐decorated vesicles.

Abstract:In this study, metabolites involved in the free-biomass filtrates for three endophytic actinomycetes of Streptomyces capillispiralis Ca-1, Streptomyces zaomyceticus Oc-5, and Streptomyces pseudogriseolus Acv-11 were used as biocatalysts for green synthesis of silver nanoparticles (Ag-NPs). Characterization of biosynthesized Ag-NPs was accomplished using UV-Vis spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction patterns (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), scanning electron microscopy (SEM-EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and particle size analyzer. The biosynthesized Ag-NPs showed maximum surface plasmon resonance (SPR) at 440 for strain Ca-1 and 450 for both strains of OC-5 and Acv-11. Nanoparticle spherical shape was recorded with size ranging from 23.77 to 63.14 nm, 11.32 to 36.72 nm, and 11.70 to 44.73 nm for Ca-1, Oc-5, and Acv-11, respectively. SEM-EDX analysis exhibited the weight percentages of 17.3, 22.3, and 48.7% for Ag-NPs synthesized by strains Ca-1, Oc-5 and Acv-11, respectively. The activities of biosynthesized Ag-NPs were concentration dependent and the obtained results confirmed the efficacy of Ag-NPs as antimicrobial agents against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria as well unicellular and multicellular fungi. The MIC for Gram-positive bacteria, Gram-negative bacteria (E. coli), and eukaryotic microorganisms was 0.25 mM with clear zone ranging from 10.3 to 14.6 mm, while MIC for Pseudomonas aeruginosa was 1.0 mM for Ag-NPs synthesized by strain Ca-1 and 0.25 mM for those synthesized by strains Oc-5 and Acv-11. Moreover, Ag-NPs exhibited antimicrobial activity against four plant pathogenic fungi represented by Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum, Pythium ultimum, and Aspergillus niger at 2.0, 1.5, 1.0, and 0.5 mM of Ag-NPs with different degree. In vitro assessment of the antioxidant efficacy of biosynthesized Ag-NPs was achieved by scavenging assay of H2O2, reducing power of Fe3+, or total antioxidant assay. The results showed that antioxidant activities of Ag-NPs were concentration dependent with the highest activity at Ag-NP concentration of 2.0 mM. Furthermore, the biosynthesized NPs have prospective bioinsecticidal activity against Culex pipiens and Musca domestica. Green synthesis of NPs could be quite potential for the development of new bioactive compounds used in different biomedical applications.
