Abstract:Highly sensitive smart sensors for early fire detection with remote warning capabilities are urgently required to improve the fire safety of combustible materials in diverse applications. The highly-sensitive fire alarm can detect fire situation within a short time quickly when a fire disaster is about to occur, which is conducive to achieve fire tuned. Herein, a novel fire alarm is designed by using flame-retardant cellulose paper loaded with graphene oxide (GO) and two-dimensional titanium carbide (Ti3C2, MXene). Owing to the excellent temperature dependent electrical resistance switching effect of GO, it acts as an electrical insulator at room temperature and becomes electrically conductive at high temperature. During a fire incident, the partial oxygen-containing groups on GO will undergo complete removal, which results in the conductivity transformation.Besides the use of GO feature, this work also introduces conductive MXene to enhance fire detection speed and warning at low temperature, especially below 300 °C. The designed flame-retardant fire alarm is sensitive enough to detect fire incident, showing a response time of 2 s at 250 °C, which is calculated by a novel and quantifiable technique. More importantly, the designed fire alarm sensor is coupled to a wireless communication interface to conveniently transmit fire signal remotely. Therefore, when an abnormal temperature is detected, the signal is wirelessly transmitted to a liquid crystal display (LCD) screen when displays a message such as "FIRE DANGER". The designed smart fire alarm paper is promising for use as a smart wallpaper for interior house decoration and other applications requiring early fire detection and warning.

Abstract:Recently, graphene oxide (GO)-based fire alarm systems have been well developed due to their rapid response to the flame. However, the GO-based fire alarm systems still suffer from low thermal stability and mechanical fragility in the flame, resulting in a short alarm time and unreliable warning. Herein, we have developed a composite paper composed of polyethyleneimine (PEI)-modified GO and hydroxyapatite (HAP) nanowires. The results demonstrate that PEI molecules are powerful to improve thermal stability and flame retardancy of GO and thus increase alarm time, while HAP nanowires with intrinsic nonflammability act as a stable fire-resistant framework to ensure the structural integrity of the composite paper after fire attacking. As a result, the GO/PEI/HAP composite paper shows the continuous fire warning, and particularly, maintains its mechanical strength mostly and high flexibility after fire attacking. This work provides an instructive guideline to design reliable GO-based fire alarm systems.

Abstract:Design and development of multifunctional fire-resistant and fire alarm wallpaper (FAW) that can simultaneously hold early fire warning function and the ability to inhibit flame propagation is urgently required to boost the fire safety of combustible materials in public security. Herein, a flexible sandwich-like and nacre-biomimetic FAW was fabricated by using renewable lignocellulose nanofibrils (LCNF) and MXene thermosensitive sensor via a vacuum-assisted alternate self-assembly method. The FAW achieved ultrasensitive fire early warning response because of the synergistic effect of the insulating LCNF layers and highly conductive MXene with hierarchical structure sandwiched between LCNF layers. Furthermore, owing to the ultrafast catalytic char formation and intumescent flame retardant effect of ammonium polyphosphate (APP), the trigger sensitivity and thermal oxidation capacity of the FAW (LCNF-15) were greatly optimized by adding 15 % APP in the LCNF layer, resulting in a superior fire alarm response (0.32 s) and a continuous alarm signal (about 3073.0 s) under a flame attack. Besides, the LCNF-15 also exhibited good flexibility, ideal cyclic warning performance, excellent heat insulation ability and strong char-forming properties in a fire. The sandwich-like strategy offers a new platform for the construction of MXene-based multifunctional FAW, which is of great value in broadly addressing the fire hazard problem of traditional wallpapers.

Abstract:The development of flame-retardant coating with sensitive fire warning is imperative but highly challenging in the "Internet of Everything Era". In this study, a multifunctional fire protection nanocoating (MFNC) was fabricated on the surface of flammable materials by dip-coating Ti 3 C 2 T X (MXene), montmorillonite (MMT) nanosheet, and 2-ureido-4[1H]-pyrimidinone-containing cellulose (UPC) via layer-by-layer assembly. The MXene/UPC layer endowed the nanocoating with accurate temperature sensing capability because of the outstanding conductivity and unique thermoelectric characteristic of MXene. When being burnt, MFNC was able to trigger the fire-warning system in less than 4 s. Owing to the MMT/UPC layer, MFNC showed excellent flame retardancy due to the barrier and catalytic carbonization of MMT. MFNC led to the increase in the limiting oxygen index of the flammable materials by up to 40.0% and the vertical burning test reached the UL94 V-0 rating. More importantly, attributed to the multiple hydrogen bond interactions of UPC, MFNC displayed good self-healing capability. Its fire-warning performance could quickly recover after being damaged. Furthermore, MFNC exhibited sensitive piezoresistive sensing ability, which makes it a promising candidate for application in firefighter motion detection. Our work provides new insights into the fabrication and application of multifunctional smart and efficient fire-protection coatings.

Abstract:Textiles with fire detection will appeal for the interior decoration of houses and play a critical role in public security. Herein, we fabricated a sandwichlike fire alarm fabric (Ag@Fe3O4-MS) based on Fe3O4 nanowire (NW) arrays and fish-scale-like silver sheets, designed by in situ layer-by-layer assembly on the surface of polypropylene (PP) nonwoven fabric. The Ag@Fe3O4-MS sensor has fish-scale-like silver sheets as self-assembling electrode layers on the upper and lower sides of fabric, which can be tailored into various shapes and integrated into other flexible electronics. The sensor provides a real-time monitoring strategy for early warning fire detection (below 100 °C). At room temperature, the fabricated Ag@Fe3O4-MS sensor is electrically insulating, while it switches to an electrical conductor when exposed to flame. In view of its fast response time (2 s) and sustained working time (at least 15 min), the sensor with a connected alarm light can immediately alert people of house fires. More importantly, this sensor can provide additional real-time information on the fire location and reliable real-time monitoring of fire rekindling. The sensor was exposed to fire for successive cycles with an average response of I = 43 mA, confirming the reliable repeatability to detect fires. This ultralight, flexible Ag@Fe3O4-MS sensor could have broad applications in home safety. Moreover, the sandwichlike design provides a reliable strategy to modify household fabric items to provide a fire warning function.

Abstract:Temperature-responsive materials with excellent reliability, sensitivity, and flame-retardant properties have always been an urgent need in the field of intelligent fire protection. In this discourse, we introduce a novel thermosensitive ionic hydrogel coating (gelatin/poly(acrylamide-co-acrylic acid)/CaCl2/spindle-shaped aluminum hydroxide nanosheet/glycerol, HCA) synthesized via free radical polymerization. HCA not only demonstrates considerable mechanical properties with a fracture strain of up to 842.5 % and a maximum tensile strength of 0.77 MPa but also exhibits notable flame retardancy and adhesion. It effectively covers combustible surfaces, providing outstanding fire protection. Notably, HCA boasts a Seebeck coefficient of up to 10.1 mV/K, significantly surpassing conventional thermoelectric materials. The well-established linear relationship between the generated voltage and temperature variation enables HCA-based intelligent fire-alarm system to accurately emit continuous alerts during fire incidents and swiftly transmit alarm signals to terminal devices. The development of this intelligent fire-alarm system presents new avenues in intelligent fire-safety technologies.

Abstract:A novel phosphorus-nitrogen containing dendrimer DPC-PAMAM has been obtained by the functionalization of amine terminated poly(amidoamine) (PAMAM) with diphenyl phosphoryl chloride (DPC), which is used to modify polyurethane (PU) as an intumescent flame retardant. The gel-phase network, made up of a number of nanofibers, is formed by the self-assembly of DPC-PAMAM dendrimer, which is embedded in the PU matrix by in situ polymerization. The results from thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and cone calorimeter testing indicate that the addition of the DPC-PAMAM gelator improves thermal stability and reduces significantly the flammability (including peak heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), average mass loss rate (AMLR), etc.) of PU resin. Furthermore, incorporating the DPC-PAMAM gelator into the polymer matrix enhances the strength of PU resin. The scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images show that a compact and dense intumescent char is formed for PU composites filled with DPC-PAMAM after combustion, which results in the improvement of flame-retardant properties of the polymer matrix by condensed phase flame retardancy.
Intelligent cyclic fire warning sensor based on hybrid PBO nanofiber and montmorillonite nanocomposite papers decorated with phenyltriethoxysilane

Abstract:An abundance of early warning graphene-based nano-materials and sensors have been developed to avoid and prevent the critical fire risk of combustible materials. However, there are still some limitations that should be addressed, such as the black color, high-cost and single fire warning response of graphene-based fire warning materials. Herein, we report an unexpected montmorillonite (MMT)-based intelligent fire warning materials that have excellent fire cyclic warning performance and reliable flame retardancy. Combining phenyltriethoxysilane (PTES) molecules, poly(p-phenylene benzobisoxazole) nanofiber (PBONF), and layers of MMT to form a silane crosslinked 3D nanonetwork system, the homologous PTES decorated MMT-PBONF nanocomposites are designed and fabricated via a sol-gel process and low temperature self-assembly method. The optimized nanocomposite paper shows good mechanical flexibility (good recovery after kneading or bending process), high tensile strength of ∼81 MPa and good water resistance. Furthermore, the nanocomposite paper exhibits high-temperature flame resistance (almost unchanged structure and size after 120 s combustion), sensitive flame alarm response (∼0.3 s response once exposure onto a flame), cyclic fire warning performance (>40 cycles), and adaptability to complex fire situations (several fire attack and evacuation scenarios), showing promising applications for monitoring the critical fire risk of combustible materials. Therefore, this work paves a rational way for design and fabrication of MMT-based smart fire warning materials that combine excellent flame shielding and sensitive fire alarm functions.

Abstract:Recently, the extensive use of combustible materials has amplified building fire damage, making it essential to incorporate fire-detection devices and flame-retardant materials in building. Herein, the chitosan/gelatin (CG) film and KH 2 PO 4 -modified CG (KCG) films were fabricated via an eco-friendly water evaporation method. Impressively, KCG films demonstrate swift response times: 0.5 s at 100 °C and 1.8 s under flame, facilitating prompt alarms during fire incidents. Compared to CG, KCG achieve a 70.4% and 46.2% reduction in peak heat release rate and total heat release respectively. They also offer flexibility, transparency, repeated fire-warning efficacy and superior char formation. With these properties, KCG hold promise for innovative building fire safety solutions like smart fire-alarm wallpaper. Besides, a tailored wireless-based fire-alarm system for KCG further decreases building fire damage. This work mitigates damages arising from building fires work, marking significant leap forward in the use of bio-based materials for fire prevention in architecture.

Abstract:Fire seriously threatens human life and causes a large number of losses. Common fire alarms are composed of sensors and power supply, but damage of any components at high temperatures will lead to their failure, which poses a challenge to the application of stable and sensitive alarms in an extreme environment. Hence, we report a nonflammable self-powered alarm, which integrates energy supply and a multistage sensor. The self-powered alarm is a thermal-responsive smart supercapacitor composed of high-temperature-resistant polyimide nanofibers and ionic crystals. Thanks to the sharp conductivity change (more than 3 orders of magnitude) of the ionic crystal at the phase transition point, the self-powered alarm shows stable energy storage performance at room temperature (maintained a high potential of above 1.3 V) and sensitive temperature response in a fire. Furthermore, due to the structural designability of the ionic crystal, the phase transition point can be adjusted according to demand (e.g., 40, 60, and 90 degrees C). Therefore, the polyimide/ionic crystal-based self-powered alarm can achieve a multistage fire alarm based on temperature. These unique properties of a self-powered smart alarm will effectively reduce the loss caused by fire and protect human life.

Abstract:Graphene oxide (GO) fire warning sensors have received much attention in the last 5 years. However, GO sensors still suffer from a high response temperature (above 100 °C) and short duration time of fire warning. In this work, an asymmetric nanocomposite paper based on color and resistance switching was developed to overcome these issues. The top surface consists of poly(pentacosadiynoic acid) [poly(PCDA)] and hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanowires, which gives the alarm by a color change from purple to red at 55 °C due to the conformational distortion of the poly(PCDA) backbone. On the other hand, the bottom surface is made of 3-aminopropyltriethoxysilane (APTES)-modified GO nanosheets and HAp nanowires, which sends out alerts within 1 s in fire by means of resistance change due to the thermal reduction of GO. It is found that the APTES molecules effectively enhance flame retardancy of GO by releasing nonflammable gases and producing a protective solid barrier. As a result, long-lasting fire warning has been realized.

Abstract:Cotton fabrics with intelligent fire warning and protection have promising applications in smart wearables and smart home decoration. In this study, multifunctional nanoparticles (M@A) with heterogeneous structures are constructed through the electrostatic self-assembly of core-shell structured silver nanowires (AgNW@BP) and MXene nanosheets. Subsequently, M@A is blended with bio-based sodium alginate (SA) to prepare multifunctional cotton fabrics that exhibit fire warning, thermal conductivity, high strength, and flame retardancy. For instance, the tensile strength of the multifunctional fabric is 58.5 MPa, surpassing that of some MXene paper/films used for fire warning (~10 MPa). Furthermore, the catalytic charring effect of AgNW@BP and the labyrinth effect of MXene synergistically enhances the flame retardancy of the multifunctional cotton fabric (total heat release rate, total smoke production and peak heat release rate of the multifunctional cotton fabric are 5.7 MJ/m, 0.09 m 2 , and 126.8 kW/m 2 , respectively). Significantly, the multifunctional cotton fabric also demonstrates a fast response time (2 s) and repeatable alarm capability when exposed to flames attack.. Hence, this work provides inspiration for the design and fabrication of multifunctional cotton fabrics with intelligent fire warning and protection.

Abstract:Abstract Smart fire alarm sensor (FAS) materials with mechanically robust, excellent flame retardancy as well as ultra-sensitive temperature-responsive capability are highly attractive platforms for fire safety application. However, most reported FAS materials can hardly provide sensitive, continuous and reliable alarm signal output due to their undesirable temperature-responsive, flame-resistant and mechanical performances. To overcome these hurdles, herein, we utilize the multi-amino molecule, named HCPA, that can serve as triple-roles including cross-linker, fire retardant and reducing agent for decorating graphene oxide (GO) sheets and obtaining the GO/HCPA hybrid networks. Benefiting from the formation of multi-interactions in hybrid network, the optimized GO/HCPA network exhibits significant increment in mechanical strength, e.g., tensile strength and toughness increase of ~ 2.3 and ~ 5.7 times, respectively, compared to the control one. More importantly, based on P and N doping and promoting thermal reduction effect on GO network, the excellent flame retardancy (withstanding ~ 1200 °C flame attack), ultra-fast fire alarm response time (~ 0.6 s) and ultra-long alarming period (> 600 s) are obtained, representing the best comprehensive performance of GO-based FAS counterparts. Furthermore, based on GO/HCPA network, the fireproof coating is constructed and applied in polymer foam and exhibited exceptional fire shielding performance. This work provides a new idea for designing and fabricating desirable FAS materials and fireproof coatings.

Abstract:Facile fabrication of fire-warning sensors with low-cost and high-strength has always been a considerable challenge for materials scientists. Herein, Carbon black (CB) nanoparticles with core-shell structure (denoted as CB@KF) were prepared by in-situ polymerization. And a novel fire-warning sensor (denoted as CB@KF-CF) with temperature sensing, fire-warning, flexibility and high strength was fabricated by coating a flame retardant coating, which consists of PVA, CB@KF, and Carbon nanotubes (CNT) on cotton fabric. Benefiting from the flame retardancy and carbonization performance of CB@KF, CB@KF-CF possessed much better flame retardancy and fire-warning properties. Especially, CB@KF-CF exhibited a shorter alarm time to abnormal high temperature (350 °C) and fire, which can warn at 8 s and 4 s respectively. Meanwhile, the char length of CB@KF-CF was 7.8 cm after the Vertical flame test (VFT) and the Total heat release rate (THR) of CB@KF-CF was also reduced by more than 50%. Ultimately, the formation mechanism of the dense char layer and the conductive paths were also illustrated. These results show that the preparation of fire-warning sensor described in this paper has broad application prospects.

Abstract:Cellulose nanofibers (CNF) have a wide range of applications in daily life, yet their inherent flammability poses potential fire hazards and risks. Enhancing the flame resistance of CNF is a challenging task. Inspired by the layered "brick-and-mortar" architecture of nacre, a novel flame-retardant material was prepared in this work. The process involved modification of cellulose-rich pulp paper with a solution containing phytic acid and urea, creating phytic acid-modified cellulose nanofibers (PA-CNF) through a mechanical shearing technique. Subsequently, PA-CNF and graphene oxide (GO) were utilized as assembly units, with calcium chloride (CaCl 2 ) serving as a crosslinking agent. A nacre-mimetic film was fabricated via layer-by-layer coating and hot pressing, with GO as "bricks" and PA-CNF as the "mortar". The flame retardancy of PA-CNF was significantly enhanced following phytic acid modification, and the resultant nacre-mimetic material demonstrated remarkable flame retardancy and mechanical properties, achieving a state of complete non-flammability. The nacre-mimetic structure provides superior insulation against heat, oxygen, and smoke, thereby enhancing safety measures. Moreover, the mixed solution of PA-CNF and GO has potential applications as flame retardant and thermal insulation coatings.

Abstract:Design and development of intelligent fire warning materials with rapid response capabilities has always been an urgent need for the safety of many flammable materials in their applications. Herein, an aminated black phosphorene (BP-NH2) prepared by ball milling was employed to connect with graphene oxide (GO) via covalent bonds to fabricate a flexible film with ultrahigh thermal conductivity and remarkable flame retardancy. The thermal diffusivity of the RPNG 20 film is as high as 1496.87 ± 51.11 mm2 s–1, and its thermal conductivity is also up to 1085.74 ± 37.08 W m–1 K–1, which is in full agreement with the theoretical calculation value (1086.9 ± 59.1 W m–1 K–1) of the multilayer graphene nanosheets reported in the previous literature. The effective medium theoretical calculations show that the interface thermal resistance has been reduced to 1/367 of that of pure graphene, which promotes the heat transfer of phonons. Simultaneously, it displays excellent flame-retardant properties. The peak of the heat release rate (PHRR) value is only 12.46 W g–1, resulting in a 96.57% decrease compared with that of the pure GO film (363.17 W g–1), which is attributed to the formation of an intumescent flame-retardant system. More importantly, when encountering a flame attack, the unreduced flexible film demonstrates an extremely fast fire alarm response capability of less than 1 s and can continue to work after leaving the fire, which is ascribed to the high degree of carbonization after contacting with fire. Abstract:Design and exploitation of smart fire-warning devices with ultrasensitive response capability are always an urgent need for effective fire protection. Herein, a nano-filler (BP-MoS2) is prepared by ball milling black phosphorene and molybdenum disulfide and added into the graphene oxide (GO) film to fabricate a multifunctional film with high fire resistance and rapid response ability. When the addition of BP-MoS2 is 20.0 wt%, the GO/BP-MoS2 20.0 shows an excellent flame retardancy. The residual char rate is improved from 46.60% to 66.65%, and its peak of heat release rate (pHRR) value has reduced from 599.92 W g−1 to 274.00 W g−1, resulting in a 54.33% decrease, which is attributed to the ultra-fast catalytic char formation and synergistic flame retardancy of BP and MoS2. Meanwhile, the composite film can still maintain the original shape within 15 s of ignition. More interestingly, when encountering a flame attack, it reveals an ultra-fast fire warning response (about 1 s), which is attributed to the fast carbonization after contacting with flame. Such approach offers a novel perspective for the preparation of intelligent fire alarm devices with ultra-fast response ability.
