Abstract:An experimental research was conducted on seismic behavior of stiffened thin steel plate shear walls (SPSWs) considering the effect of vertical load on frame column. Two full-scale rectangular concrete-filled steel tube columns-stiffened thin steel plate shear specimens were tested under low-cycle reverse load. The design of specimens considers two cases of vertical stiffeners with equal spacing and variable spacing. The test results show that the specimens have good ductility and energy consumption capacity when the frame columns are subjected to high axial pressure. The ultimate drift angle of the specimens reaches 1/30. The plastic deformation of the specimens is mainly manifested as the out-of-plane buckling, which satisfies the design concept of “strong column and weak beam”. The arrangement of the stiffeners has no obvious influence on the seismic performance of the specimens. The nonlinear finite element method is further used to study the influence of initial defects and axial compression ratio on the lateral resistance performance of the specimen. The analysis results show that the initial defect distribution mode of the wall and the out-of-plane deflection amplitude have little effect on the pushover curve of the specimens. When the axial compression ratio of the frame column is greater than 0.7, the bearing capacity and deformation capacity of the specimens are reduced. Based on the shear control failure characteristics of the specimens, the calculation method of the specimen’s shear capacity is given. The calculated value is in good agreement with the finite element simulation value, and it is conservative than the experimental value.

Abstract:The concrete-filled wide rectangular steel tube (CFWRST) columns, with the aspect ratio of cross-section greater than 2.0, have attracted much attention in practice. Existing studies on the concrete-filled rectangular steel tube (CFRST) members have shown that the aspect ratio of cross-section is a main parameter controlling their be-haviors under various loads, which means that the behaviors of CFWRST columns may be different from the common CFST members (the aspect ratio of cross-section not greater than 2.0) considered in existing studies. The behaviors of CFWRST columns under the combined constant axial compression and cyclic lateral loadings were investigated in this paper. Six full-scale columns were tested, with which the failure modes, hysteresis curve, skeleton curve, ductility, lateral stiffness and energy dissipation capacity of the specimens were analyzed and discussed in detail. For all tested specimens, the ductility indexes are between 2.028 and 3.433, and the equivalent damping ratios usually exceed 0.3 at the last of loading cycle. The finite element model was also developed and validated using the test results, and the parametric analyses were carried out with the influences of main parameters discussed. Furthermore, comparisons between the predictions of the solution of EC4 for CFST beam-columns and test results show that the solution of EC4 can provide safe predictions for the CFWRST col-umns under constant axial compression and cyclic lateral loading.
Compressive testing and modelling of additively manufactured stainless steel equal angle sections with stiffening wave patterns

Abstract:Traditional structural steel manufacturing routes typically produce prismatic members comprising of flat plate elements. Under compressive actions, the capacity of these sections is often dominated by plate instability of the lowest buckling mode. The current study involves compressive testing of 6 different configurations of non-prismatic stub columns, comprising of pre-defined surface waves tested at 3 different slendernesses and 3 amplitudes including control prismatic sections. Absolute and normalised load-displacement curves are generated to compare against the control sections and assess the potential increase in strength and stiffness, and the samples' weights are measured to evaluate the relationship between material use and strength when using this method of strengthening. Tensile coupon tests are also carried out on coupons printed from the same material to define material parameters, and an extensive parametric study is undertaken with numerical modelling software. The best case evaluated in this study indicated a strength gain of 89.9% over a control section with an equal volume of used material. Eurocode-compatible buckling characterisation curves are then provided for two of the best performing sections. This study highlights the possibilities of this technology, paving the way towards unprecedented efficiency in future steel construction.

Abstract:A series of stub column tests on complex sections with intermediate stiffeners is presented in this paper. Initial geometric imperfections and material properties of the test specimens were measured. It is shown that the intermediate stiffeners could effectively enhance the local buckling stress of thin-walled sections. The test strengths are compared with the design strengths calculated using the direct strength method in the North American Specification and Australian/New Zealand Standard for cold-formed steel structures. It is shown that the direct strength method using finite strip method to obtain the buckling stresses is very conservative. Therefore, finite element method was used to predict the elastic buckling stresses. It is shown that the design strengths calculated using direct strength method based on the buckling stresses obtained from finite element analysis results generally agree with the test results well.

The test specimens were firstly brake-pressed from structural steel sheets to form open sections with intermediate web stiffeners, then two of the open sections were connected at their flanges using self-tapping screws to form the built-up closed sections. The innovative specimens were compressed between fixed ends condition. The material properties of the column specimens were obtained by tensile coupon tests. The column test strengths were compared with the design strengths calculated using the direct strength method. Three different methods were used to obtain the local and distortional buckling stresses for the calculation of the direct strength method. Generally, it is shown that the direct strength method using single section to obtain the buckling stresses are conservative.

Abstract:A series of column tests on cold-formed steel built-up closed sections with intermediate stiffeners is presented in this paper. The test specimens were first brake pressed from structural steel sheets to form open sections with intermediate web stiffeners, then two of the open sections were connected at their flanges using self-tapping screws to form the built-up closed sections. The high strength structural steel sheets had the measured 0.2% proof stress up to 586 MPa. Initial and overall geometric imperfections as well as material properties and residual stresses of the test specimens were measured. Tests were performed over a range of lengths such that column curves could be obtained. The test strengths are compared with the design strengths calculated using the direct strength method in the North American Specification and Australian/New Zealand Standard for cold-formed steel structures. Three different methods were used to obtain the local and distortional buckling stresses for the calculation of the direct strength method. Reliability analysis was performed to assess the reliability of the direct strength method on cold-formed steel built-up closed section columns. It is shown that the direct strength method using single section to obtain the buckling stresses is generally conservative.

Abstract:An innovative X section with intermediate stiffeners of thin-walled concrete-filled steel stub was proposed in this study. The X section was firstly brake-pressed from structural steel sheets to form three edges open section with intermediate stiffener in each edge, then a plate with intermediate stiffener was welded to the open section to form the closed section. The intermediate stiffener was designed to enhance the local buckling stress of the thin-walled specimens. Stub column tests of both hollow steel tubes and concrete-filled steel tubes were performed. Material properties of the self-compacting concrete and steel used in the test specimens were also measured. Design methods specified in current design standard and proposed by other researchers are used to predict the design strengths of test specimens. It is shown that the predicted design strengths are conservative.

Abstract:Experimental and numerical studies are carried out to investigate the failure behavior of grid stiffeners under tension and flexural loadings. The grid stiffeners with three different typical layup schemes at the intersection were manufactured and tested. A 3D anisotropic damage model based on continuum damage mechanics is developed to modeling the progressive failure behaviors of the grid stiffeners. Besides, the digital image correlation (DIC) technique was adopted to capture the complex deformation and failure process. Results show that introducing discontinuous plies at the intersection could change the failure mechanism and hence improve the mechanical performance of the grid structure. The tensile and flexural strength are improved by 21% and 23% respectively by properly introducing 25% of discontinuous plies at the intersection. This work provides insights on the failure mechanisms of the composite grid stiffeners, and results can be further used towards the optimization design of the grid structure.

Abstract:Due to its remarkable combination of high yield strength and cost-effectiveness, S35657 austenitic stainless steel has gained increasing attention in the field of construction engineering. This paper delves into the global stability performance of S35657 stainless steel welded long columns. Leveraging test results from 13 welded long columns, consisting of 4 welded box-section columns and 9 welded I-section columns, a numerical simulation analysis was conducted to scrutinize the bearing capacity and failure modes of each specimen. Utilizing validated numerical models, a parametric analysis was undertaken, exploring factors such as cross-sectional classification, slenderness ratio and initial imperfection. Subsequently, the buckling curves for S35657 austenitic stainless steel welded box-section and I-section long columns, both around the major and minor axes, were evaluated using existing test results and numerical outcomes. Through data fitting and reliability analysis, buckling curves tailored to S35657 austenitic stainless steel welded box-section and I-section long columns for global buckling were proposed for the first time, providing guidance for relevant designs based on the European code (prEN 1993-1-4), the American code (SEI/ASCE 8-22) and the Chinese specification (CECS 410: 2015).

Abstract:This paper presents the experimental and analytical results of axially loaded stub columns of slender steel hollow square section (SHS) strengthened with carbon fiber reinforced polymers (CFRP) sheets. The total eight specimens were fabricated and the main parameters were: width-thickness ratio (b/t), the number of CFRP ply, and the CFRP sheet orientation. From the tests, it was observed that two sides would typically buckle outward and the other two sides would buckle inward. A maximum increase of 33% was achieved in axial-load capacity when 3 layers of CFRP were used to wrap HSS columns of b/t=100 transversely. Also, stiffness and was compared between un-retrofitted specimens and retrofitted specimens. To extend and better understand the experimental work, a companion analytical study (FEM study) was conducted. The comparisons between experimental observations and computed results show that the analyses provided good correlation to actual behavior.

Abstract:The local buckling behaviour and design of built-up square hollow section (SHS) stub columns made of the stainless-clad (SC) bimetallic steel is addressed in this paper by experimental and numerical investigations. A total of seven stub column specimens fabricated from hot-rolling bonded SC bimetallic steel plates with nominal thicknesses of 8 mm and 13 mm were tested and analysed. Precise measurements of dimensions and geometrical imperfections of the specimens were conducted with the assistance of a non-contact 3D laser scanner. The scanned data was processed by a novel approach to provide a more accurate analysis of imperfections. Finite-element (FE) models with geometric imperfections obtained from 3D-scanned data were developed and validated against the dependent test results herein and independent ones. Comprehensive parametric studies considering various clad ratios, normalized plate slendernesses and steel grades were carried out by using the verified FE models. The applicability of current codified design methods to the SC bimetallic steel SHS stub columns was evaluated through comparisons with the numerical results. A normalized slenderness limit as well as an effective width formula were proposed based on the parametric studies and the evaluation of existing design methods. With improved efficiency and consistency, the design methods proposed herein can be utilized in the future application of the SC bimetallic steel structures.

Abstract:This paper presents twenty-eight stub columns tests on stainless steel built-up sections. The test specimens, including I-sections, square hollow sections (SHS) and rectangular hollow sections (RHS), were fabricated by shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) from hot-rolled plates of nominal thicknesses 6mm and 10mm. The twenty-eight stub columns, of two stainless steel alloys (austenitic EN 1.4301 and duplex EN 1.4462), were tested in pure axial compression. Both tensile and compressive material properties were obtained by means of coupon tests in three directions – longitudinal, diagonal and transverse to the rolling direction. Geometric imperfection measurements for each specimen were conducted by means of a calibrated electric guideway, and residual stress distributions in the built-up sections were determined by means of the sectioning method. The test strengths were used to evaluate the design strengths predicted by EN 1993-1-4, the Continuous Strength Method (CSM) and the direct strength method (DSM). It was demonstrated that the predicted strengths from EN 1993-1-4 provisions were generally conservative, while both the CSM and the DSM predicted values were closer to the test strengths.

Abstract:As a new type of austenitic stainless steel with high nitrogen and low nickel, S35657 stainless steel has the characteristics of high strength and low price, and it has a good application prospect in the field of construction. To supplement the relevant research on S35657 stainless steel structures and to evaluate the applicability of existing specifications and design methods, a finite element model was established using ABAQUS software and calibrated using existing test results. Furthermore, a series of parametric analyses were carried out, focusing on the effects of width-to-thickness ratio, initial geometric imperfection , and welding residual stress on the local buckling of S35657 stainless steel welded section columns. On this basis, the critical width-to-thickness ratio limit of the compression plate was proposed. Finally, the test results and the simulation results were compared with the calculation results of load-carrying capacities for local buckling in the European code (EN1993-1-4), the American code (SEI/ASCE8–02), the Chinese specification (CECS410:2015), the direct strength method (DSM) and the continuous strength method (CSM). Based on the effective width method and DSM, two new approaches to calculate the load-carrying capacity for local buckling were proposed and demonstrated to obtain reasonable accuracy.

Abstract:Comprehensive experimental investigations into the material properties and stub column behaviour of cold-formed high strength steel (HSS) irregular hexagonal hollow sections (IHexHS) are presented in this paper. Apart from the tensile coupons taken from the parent plates, tensile coupons extracted from the flat and corner portions from the cross-sections were also tested in order to measure the effect of the fabrication process on material properties. The strength enhancement predictive models proposed by previous studies were compared with the obtained test results from corner coupons with increased strength due to the cold-forming effect. A total of 20 HSS IHexHS stub column specimens were tested under axial compression and the cross-section classification from the existing structural steel design codes of EN 1993-1-12, ANSI/AISC 360–16, AS 4100, AISI S100–16 and design approaches of DSM and CSM were compared and assessed against the obtained results. It was found that the design provisions of cross-section classification in current design codes cannot be extended to the HSS IHexHS stub columns. Based on current codified yield slenderness limits, the strength predictions from design codes exhibit conservatism without the consideration of strain hardening and beneficial effect of element interaction whereas cross-sections with intermediate slenderness values were over-predicted.

Abstract:Concrete-filled double skin steel tubular (CFDST) stub columns with external stainless steel and internal carbon steel tubes can be considered as new types of composite members and expected to combine the advantages of all three kinds of materials. This paper presents non-linear finite element (FE) analysis and design of circular and square CFDST stub columns with external stainless steel under axial compression. FE models are developed, where non-linear material property of stainless steel is considered, and verified through comparisons with experiments in terms of failure modes, load-deformation histories and ultimate strength. Behaviors of stainless steel composite columns are compared with that of columns with both carbon steel tubes. Parametric studies are conducted to investigate the influence of the outer stainless steel tube strength, concrete strength, inner carbon steel tube strength and hollow ratio on structural behavior of axially loaded columns in terms of loading and interaction performance.

Abstract:The axial compression behaviour of circular concrete-filled stainless-clad bimetallic steel tubular (CFSCBST) stub columns is addressed in this paper by experimental and numerical investigations. A total of five specimens were fabricated and subjected to axial compression loading. The varying parameters in the experimental study included the clad ratio of steel tube, the diameter-to-thickness ratio and the strength of the concrete. A threedimensional finite element (FE) model was developed and validated against both dependent and independent test data to further study the axial compressive behaviour of circular CFSCBST stub columns in this paper. The parametric studies considering five major parameters, including the strength of the concrete, the substrate steel grade, the clad ratio, the diameter-to-thickness ratio and different bonding conditions of the stainless-clad (SC) bimetallic steel, were carried out by using the verified FE model. The applicability of existing design codes to the circular CFSCBST stub columns was further analysed through comparisons with the numerical results. New design methods based on unified and superposition theory have been proposed herein, which have improved accuracy for predicting the ultimate compression capacity of such circular CFSCBST stub columns.

Abstract:In large-span bridges or high-rise buildings, CFST columns with large width-to-thickness ratio are often adopted, which require proper stiffening measures to improve the mechanical behaviors. This paper presents a comparative study of circular CFST stub columns with different stiffening methods, including longitudinal stiffeners (cross-shaped, T-shaped and ordinary type), additional reinforcement and headed studs. Axial compression tests have been conducted to investigate the effects of different stiffening methods on the failure mode, ultimate strength and ductility of the circular CFST stub columns. Finite element models are established to simulate the columns’ behaviors and conduct parametric studies. Based on test and simulation results, an axial bearing capacity prediction model for circular CFST stub columns stiffened by longitudinal stiffeners is proposed. It is demonstrated that the failure modes of the steel tube and core concrete are changed by the longitudinal stiffeners. The longitudinal steel stiffeners as well as reinforcing cage can effectively improve the axial bearing capacity and ductility of the columns. The latter is more efficient in promoting the bearing capacity while the former is more efficient in improving the ductility and residual strength. A combination of the additional stirrups and the ordinary stiffeners will be a more economical choice. In addition, the proposed formula gives better prediction accuracy compared to the equations in various design codes.

Abstract:Longitudinal stiffeners are effective in improving the overall performance of concrete-filled square or rectangular thin-walled steel tubular columns. This paper is concerned with the nonlinear analysis and design of stiffened square stub columns under axial compression. The nonlinear analysis is performed using ABAQUS, a commercially available finite element (FE) program. Close agreement is shown between the test and predicted results in terms of the load-deformation curves and ultimate strength. The column behaviour is investigated and discussed using this modelling. The limit of width-to-thickness ratio for the sub-panels and the rigidity requirement for the stiffeners is discussed. The feasibility using existing design codes to predict the load-carrying capacities of the stiffened composite columns is also dealt with in this paper.

Abstract:This paper presents an experimental investigation on the performance of cold-formed stainless steel built-up closed section stub columns. The built-up sections were composed by assembling two channel components at the flanges, which were brake-pressed from high-strength austenitic and duplex stainless steel thin sheets. Three types of built-up sectional profiles were formed by connecting two unstiffened channels (i.e., unlipped channels), two edge-stiffened channels (i.e., lipped channels) as well as one unstiffened channel and one edge-stiffened channel, respectively, using self-plugging rivets. Four sectional series were devised to cover nominal overall web height-to-plate thickness ratio values of 50, 60, 67 and 80. In order to obtain the actual material properties considering the cold-work effect, tensile coupon tests were carried out on both flat and corner longitudinal coupon specimens. In addition, a total of 29 fixed-ended stub columns including 19 specimens without holes and 10 specimens with circular web holes were tested under axial compression. The experimental results involving failure modes, ultimate capacities and responses of load versus axial shortening were obtained and fully documented. The effects of sectional profile types, overall web height-to-plate thickness ratio and hole diameter-to-overall web height ratio on the performance of cold-formed stainless steel built-up closed section stub columns were examined. Moreover, the appropriateness of design rules as prescribed in the recently updated American Specification ASCE/SEI 8–22 was evaluated. It was revealed that the codified design provisions generally provided unconservative strength predictions for the high-strength austenitic and duplex stainless steel built-up closed section stub columns both without and with circular web holes. Reliability analyses were performed in this study, and the compressive strength predictions of the built-up closed sections according to the existing design rules were found to be unreliable for the high-strength austenitic stainless steel stub columns without holes as well as the duplex stainless steel stub columns without and with circular web holes.
