Abstract:Additively manufactured (AM) Ti-6Al-4V devices are implanted with increasing frequency. While registry data report short-term success, a gap persists in our understanding of long-term AM Ti-6Al-4V corrosion behavior. Retrieval studies document β phase selective dissolution on conventionally manufactured Ti-6Al-4V devices. Researchers reproduce this damage in vitro by combining negative potentials (cathodic activation) and inflammatory simulating solutions (H2O2-phosphate buffered saline). In this study, we investigate the effects of these adverse electrochemical conditions on AM Ti-6Al-4V impedance and selective dissolution. We hypothesize that cathodic activation and H2O2 solution will degrade the oxide, promoting corrosion. First, we characterized AM Ti-6Al-4V samples before and after a 48 h -0.4 V hold in 0.1 M H2O2/phosphate buffered saline. Next, we acquired nearfield electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) data. Finally, we captured micrographs and EIS during dissolution. Throughout, we used AM Ti-29Nb-21Zr as a comparison. After 48 h, AM Ti-6Al-4V selectively dissolved. Ti-29Nb-21Zr visually corroded less. Structural changes at the AM Ti-6Al-4V oxide interface manifested as property changes to the impedance. After dissolution, the log-adjusted constant phase element (CPE) parameter, Q, significantly increased from -4.75 to -3.84 (Scm-2(s)α) (p = .000). The CPE exponent, α, significantly decreased from .90 to .84 (p = .000). Next, we documented a systematic decrease in oxide polarization resistance before pit nucleation and growth. Last, using k-means clustering, we established a structure-property relationship between impedance and the surface's dissolution state. These results suggest that AM Ti-6Al-4V may be susceptible to in vivo crevice corrosion within modular taper junctions.
Corrosion Resistance and Ion Dissolution of Titanium Implant under Different Temperature Thermal Oxidation

Abstract:Objective: In vitro corrosion resistance and ion dissolution of titanium implants. Methods: Three different kinds of thermal treatments were investigated using adopting constant potential meter and atomic absorption spectroscopy. Results:The treatments were natural oxidation(c. p. Ti), artificial oxidation(400 ℃,45min), high temperature oxidation(700℃,45min).It was discovered that each group of surfaces all have good corrosion resistance and low ion release rate. Among them, the corrosion resistance of artificial oxidation group was the best, the titanium ion release rate was the lowest, while the corrosion resistance of natural oxidation group was the worst and its titanium ion release rate was the highest.Conclusion:The surface of artificial oxidation group had the best stability.

Abstract:Titanium alloys, with their impressive strength relative to their weight, resistance to corrosion, and compatibility with biological systems, have found extensive applications in various industries. In high-temperature environments, especially within the aerospace sector, it is essential to advance titanium alloys that boast enhanced resistance to oxidation and superior mechanical characteristics. This work investigates the oxidation characteristics and mechanical performances at high temperatures of a titanium alloy with titanium silicide particles. Oxidation at temperatures of 600–700 °C over a span of 8–32 h led to the formation of protective oxide layers and moderate oxidation rates. However, accelerated oxidation and oxide spallation occurred after exposed at 800 °C for a period of 16 h, indicating inadequate oxidation resistance over 800 °C. Subsequent tensile tests at 650 °C revealed intricate dislocation patterns in the α-Ti matrix and their strong interaction with interfaces of α-Ti/Ti5Si3, which is indicative of an efficient load transfer between the precipitates and the matrix. Overall, this study offers fresh perspectives on the oxidation kinetics and the deformation processes of titanium alloys with in-situ Ti5Si3 particles at high temperatures. These insights will guide subsequent alloy development endeavors aiming to broaden the use of titanium alloys in increasingly challenging high-temperature settings.

Abstract:Thermal oxidation process under water vapor environment was performed on biomedical titanium alloys for 4h at different treatment temperature changing from 600°C to 800°C to improve the surface properties for the application of artificial joints. In order to ascertain the suitability of thermal oxidized sample as a bio-implant, the morphological features, structural characteristics, microhardness and tribological behavior in dry friction were evaluated. Alumina and rutile as the new phases appeared for the thermal oxidized samples with the hardness increasing. The mechanism of oxidation involved nucleation of a thin layer of oxide followed by its agglomeration and growth to completely cover the surface. The representative coating thickness values for samples oxidized at 600°C, 700°C and 800°C were 1.2, 7.5 and 34.9μm, respectively. The coefficient of friction for oxidized Ti6Al4V alloy was lower than the untreated with the maximum reduction of 62% when oxidized at 700°C. The wear volume results indicated that thermal oxidization effectively improved the tribological behavior with a reduction of 80% at most. In this investigation, the results proved that thermal oxidation temperature could effectively influence the microstructural and tribological behavior of Ti6Al4V alloy and the optimal oxidation temperature was 700°C.

Abstract:The biological activity, biocompatibility, and corrosion resistance of implants depend primarily on titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) film on biomedical titanium alloy (Ti6Al4V). This research is aimed at getting an ideal temperature range for forming a dense titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) film during titanium alloy cutting. This article is based on Gibbs free energy, entropy changes, and oxygen partial pressure equations to perform thermodynamic calculations on the oxidation reaction of titanium alloys, studies the oxidation reaction history of titanium alloys, and analyzes the formation conditions of titanium dioxide. The heat oxidation experiment was carried out. The chemical composition was analyzed with an energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). The results revealed that titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ) is the main reaction product on the surface below 900°C. Excellent porous oxidation films can be obtained between 670°C and 750°C, which is helpful to improve the bioactivity and osseointegration of implants.

Abstract:Titanium-based implants utilized in total joint arthroplasties could restore primary musculoskeletal function to patients suffering from osteoarthritis and other conditions. Implants are susceptible to failure stemming from aseptic loosening and infection at the joint site, eventually requiring revision surgery. We hypothesized that there might be a feedback loop by which metal degradation particles and ions released from the implant decrease cell viability and increase immune response, thereby creating biochemical conditions that increase the corrosion rate and release more metal ions. This study focused on the synergistic process through cell viability assays and electrochemical tests. From the results, inflammatory conditions from ion release resulting in cell death would further increase the corrosion rate at the metal implant site. The synergistic interaction in the implant surroundings in which infectious conditions produce Ti ions that contribute to more infection, creating a potential cycle of accelerating corrosion.

Abstract:Titanium is a versatile biocompatible metal that is desirable in additively manufactured medical implant devices. However, additively manufactured parts have particular microstructures, porosity, residual stress and surface conditions which can have a strong impact on fatigue performance. Implants have an added complexity from the saline operating environment and the associated impact on the safe design life. Equally, direct energy deposition induces a complex thermal history which, if not carefully controlled, can significantly alter the mechanical/material properties of the component. This study investigates the decrease in fatigue life, in an in-vitro body fluid simulation using Ringer’s solution, observed in Ti-6Al-4V specimens extracted from coupons manufactured by directed energy deposition. An interrupted deposition strategy was employed to control build regularity, which appeared to influence certain mechanical properties, including corrosion fatigue life. An ≈50% decrease in fatigue life was observed in Ringer’s solution at 6 Hz loading frequency, clearly important in designing implants.

Abstract:Ti-6Al-4V ELI is one of the titanium alloys commonly used as an implant material for its good biocompatibility. However, it has problems related to its corrosion behavior, especially when it is used for a long time. This study aimed to analyze the corrosion behavior of the implant material Ti-6Al-4V ELI in Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) for a certain period, using the weight loss method in HBSS as the corrosive medium at 37°C. The immersion time was varied from two, four, until six weeks. Before immersion, the sample was thermomechanically treated with a combination of solution heat treatment at a temperature of 950°C and a holding time of 1 hour, water quenching, plastic deformation with deformation variations of 10%, 15%, and 20%, and, finally, aging heat treatment at a temperature of 550°C and holding time for 1.5 hours. The study results show that thermomechanical treatment and increased plastic deformation could reduce the corrosion rate and the metal ions released into the solution. These findings were evidenced by the corrosion rates of the pre-thermomechanical and the thermomechanical Ti-6Al-4V ELI with deformations of 10%, 15%, and 20% at the 6-week immersion of 6.57 x 10 -6 mmpy, 4.27 x 10 -6 mmpy, 3.89 x 10 -6 mmpy, and 2.76 x 10 -6 mmpy, respectively, and the metal ions released of 7.3 μg/L, 7 μg/L, 6.3 μg/L, and 6 μg/L, respectively. The corrosion rate of Ti-6Al-4V ELI under thermomechanical treatment, namely 2.76 x 10 -6 mmpy, was the lowest compared to other materials in HBSS, while the highest one was that of Ti-6Al-7Nb of 3.05 x10 -2 mmpy. In addition, the study results show that Ti-6Al-4V ELI under thermomechanical treatment is the best material compared to others for biomedical applications, based on corrosion resistance and metal ions released into HBSS.
The reduction half cell in biomaterials corrosion: oxygen diffusion profiles near and cell response to polarized titanium surfaces

Abstract:Mechanically assisted corrosion processes can greatly increase the oxidation currents generated in passivating alloy systems like Co-Cr and titanium due to oxide film disruption. When oxide films are abraded, repassivation and ionic dissolution both occur at rates that are orders of magnitude higher than undisrupted surfaces. The excess electrons generated by these anodic processes must be consumed in corresponding reduction reactions that include the reduction of oxygen. If large enough, these reduction reactions may locally deplete the concentration of solution-dissolved oxygen and, in turn, affect cell behavior in the vicinity of the implant surface. To date, this hypothesis has not been tested. In the present study, a scanning electrochemical microscope was used to measure oxygen concentration profiles in vitro near a planar titanium electrode polarized to different voltages representative of those attainable by titanium undergoing mechanically assisted corrosion. The potentials investigated ranged from 0 mV to -1000 mV (AgCl). The oxygen concentration as a function of distance from the titanium surface was measured using a platinum-iridium microelectrode and an amperometric technique. Also, preliminary experiments were performed to assess the response of rat calvarial osteoblast-rich cells cultured for 2 h on titanium samples polarized to two different potentials (0 mV and -1000 mV versus AgCl). The results of this study indicate that oxygen concentrations near titanium surfaces are affected by sample potentials out to probe-sample distances as great as 500 microm. Within 2 microm of the surface, oxygen concentrations decreased by 15 to 25% for sample potentials between -100 and -500 mV. At potentials more negative than -600 mV, the oxygen concentration dropped rapidly to near zero by -900 mV. The cell experiments showed a statistically significant difference in the amount of cell spreading, as measured by projected cell area, between the two groups (p < 0.03), with the cells cultured at -1000 mV undergoing much less spreading. This implies that -1000 mV inhibits normal cell behavior at the titanium surface and that this is most likely due, at least in part, to a diminished oxygen supply.

Abstract:This article presents a comprehensive study concerning size and geometry effect on the ambient and high-temperature mechanical behavior of additively manufactured laser powder bed fusion Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Key mechanical property metrics are presented, including strain hardening rate, yield strength, and Young's modulus as a function of thickness and testing temperature (ambient, 250 °C, and 450 °C). The effect of specimen size on manufacturing-induced microstructural feature formation is demonstrated and discussed. A detailed analysis regarding Young's modulus, yield strength, and strain hardening rate variation at elevated temperatures is also presented.Size effect and temperature-sensitive deformation mechanisms are linked to the underlying microstructural deformation mechanisms activated at respective temperatures. Counter-intuitively, this study determined that irrespective of the geometry, strain hardening rates increased as temperature increased. An in-depth microstructural examination is presented to explain the stated observation. The texture of Interrupted tensile test samples examined for ambient, 250 °C, and 450 °C post-yield was observed to be unchanged, indicating the strain hardening behavior was not texture dependent. A hypothesis was generated by coupling Schmid factor analysis with findings from previous work to suggest dislocation density paired with the drop in critical resolved shear stress for basal and pyramidal slip systems as temperature increases leads to dislocation entanglement.

The influence of temperature during water-quench rapid heat treatment on the microstructure, mechanical properties and biocompatibility of Ti6Al4V ELI alloy

Abstract:This study investigates the influence of a rapid heat treatment followed by water-quenching on the mechanical properties of Ti6Al4V ELI alloy to improve its strength for use in implants. Prior to the experiment, a dilatometry test was performed to understand the progressive α-to β-phase transformation taking place during heating. The results were then used to carry out heat treatments. Microstructure was analysed using SEM, EBSD, EDX and XRD techniques. Vickers micro-hardness, tensile and high cycle rotating bending tests were used to analyse the influence of the $\alpha'$-phase fraction on the strength of the studied alloy. Results show that this process can provide a Ti6Al4V ELI alloy with a better Yield Strength (YS)/uniform deformation (εu) ratio and improved high cycle fatigue strength than those observed in the current microstructure used in medical implants. Lastly, cytotoxicity tests were performed on two types of human cells, namely MG63 osteoblast-like cells and fibroblasts. The results reveal the non-toxicity of the heat-treated Ti6Al4V ELI alloy.
Effect of Temperature on Thermal Oxidation Behavior of Ti-6Al-4V ELI Alloy

Abstract:In this paper, the morphological, micromechanical and tribological characteristics of the Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy after thermal oxidation (TO) were identified. TO was carried out at temperatures of 848 K, 898 K and 948 K over a period of 50 h. Microscopic examination revealed that an increase in temperature resulted in an improved uniformity of coverage and an increased oxide grain size. Micromechanical tests showed that TO of the Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy led to an increase in hardness and deformation resistance. Following oxidation, a decrease (by approximately 10–22%) was observed in the total mechanical work of indentation, Wtotal, compared to the as-received material. The formation of protective oxide films on the Ti-6Al-4V ELI alloy also led to the improvement of tribological characteristics, both when tested under dry friction conditions and in Ringer's solution. The sliding wear resistance increased with an increase in the oxidation temperature. However, a greater degree of wear reduction (by approximately 30–50%) was found for the lubricated contact in comparison with the dry friction tests. Surface roughness also increased with the increase in temperature.

Surface Corrosion Resistance in Turning of Titanium Alloy

Abstract:This work addresses the issues associated with implant surface modification. We propose a method to form the oxide film on implant surfaces by dry turning to generate heat and injecting oxygen-rich gas at the turning-tool flank. The morphology, roughness, composition, and thickness of the oxide films in an oxygen-rich atmosphere were characterized using scanning electron microscopy, optical profiling, and Auger electron spectroscopy. Electrochemical methods were used to study the corrosion resistance of the modified surfaces. The corrosion resistance trends, analyzed relative to the oxide film thickness, indicate that the oxide film thickness is the major factor affecting the corrosion resistance of titanium alloys in a simulated body fluid (SBF). Turning in an oxygen-rich atmosphere can form a thick oxide film on the implant surface. The thickness of surface oxide films processed at an oxygen concentration of 80% was improved to 4.6 times that of films processed at an oxygen concentration of 21%; the free corrosion potential shifted positively by 0.357 V, which significantly improved the corrosion resistance of titanium alloys in the SBF. Therefore, the proposed method may (partially) replace the subsequent surface oxidation. This method is significant for biomedical development because it shortens the process flow, improves the efficiency, and lowers the cost.

Abstract:Oxidation resistance of titanium aluminide (TiAl) based alloys is a fundamental aspect for the high-temperature structural applications such as in the advanced hypersonic aircraft engines and gas turbines. The aim of this study was to identify oxidation kinetics and mechanisms through detailed microstructural characterization of a newly-developed Ti-44Al-4Nb-1.5Cr-0.5Mo-0.1B-0.1Y alloy via focused ion beam (FIB), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), electron probe microanalysis (EPMA), scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), along with density functional theory (DFT) calculations. The alloy consisting mainly of γ-TiAl/α2-Ti3Al lamellar structure exhibited a superior oxidation resistance at 700 °C, and followed parabolic oxidation kinetics at 800 °C and 900 °C. The observed multi-layered scale structure consisted of TiO2, Al2O3-rich, Al2O3+TiO2, H-Ti2AlN+Al2O3+α2-Ti3Al, Z-Ti5Al3O2+AlNb2+Laves-(Ti,Nb)Cr2, and H-Ti2AlN/α2-Ti3Al lamellae from the outside to inside after high-temperature oxidation. The γ-TiAl/α2-Ti3Al lamellae near the scale/substrate interface were first transformed into H-Ti2AlN/α2-Ti3Al lamellae, with orientation relationships identified as ( 0001 ) α 2 / / ( 0001 ) T i 2 A l N , ( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) α 2 / / ( 10 1 ¯ 0 ) T i 2 A l N and [ 1 2 ¯ 10 ] α 2 / / [ 1 2 ¯ 10 ] T i 2 A l N . The H-Ti2AlN/α2-Ti3Al lamellae were then transformed into a metastable Z-Ti5Al3O2 phase at the scale/substrate interface. The Z-phase was decomposed to Ti3Al and Al2O3 as the scale/substrate interface moved inwardly. Ti3Al reacted further with oxygen and nitrogen to form Ti2AlN, which was finally oxidized to form TiO2 and α-Al2O3. A Nb-rich layer was present beneath the scale along with the formation of AlNb2 and Laves phase, and the doping effect of Nb to suppress the diffusion of oxygen occurred mainly in the TiO2+Al2O3 compound layer. The results obtained in this study would pave the way for the development of advanced oxidation-resistant TiAl-based materials for high-temperature applications.

Abstract:Titanium and its alloys are characterized by high biocompatibility and good corrosion resistance as a result of the ability to form a TiO2 oxide layer. However, based on literature data it can be concluded that titanium degradation products, in the form of titanium particles, metal-protein groups, oxides and ions, may cause allergic, inflammatory reactions and bone resorption. The corrosion process of Ti6Al4V in the human body environment may be intensified by a decreased pH and concentration of chloride compounds. The purpose of this article was to analyze the corrosion resistance of the Ti6Al4V alloy, obtained by the selective laser melting method in a corrosion solution of neutral pH and in a solution simulating peri-implant inflammatory conditions. Additionally, the influence of zinc oxide deposited by the atomic layer deposition method on the improvement of the physicochemical behavior of the Ti6Al4V alloy was analyzed. In order to characterize the ZnO layer, tests of chemical and phase composition as well as surface morphology investigation were performed. As part of the assessment of the physicochemical properties of the uncoated samples and those with the ZnO layer, tests of wetting angle, pitting corrosion and impedance corrosion were carried out. The number of ions released after the potentiodynamic test were measured using the inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) method. It can be concluded that samples after surface modification (with the ZnO layer) were characterized by favorable physicochemical properties and had higher corrosion resistance.
Improving Pure Titanium's Biological and Mechanical Characteristics through ECAP and Micro-Arc Oxidation Processes

Abstract:Pure titanium is limited to be used in biomedical applications due to its lower mechanical strength compared to its alloy counterpart. To enhance its properties and improve medical implants feasibility, advancements in titanium processing technologies are necessary. One such technique is equal-channel angular pressing (ECAP) for its severe plastic deformation (SPD). This study aims to surface modify commercially pure titanium using micro-arc oxidation (MAO) or plasma electrolytic oxidation (PEO) technologies, and mineral solutions containing Ca and P. The composition, metallography, and shape of the changed surface were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), digital optical microscopy (OM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM), respectively. A microhardness test is conducted to assess each sample's mechanical strength. The weight % of Ca and P in the coating was determined using energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), and the corrosion resistance was evaluated through potentiodynamic measurement. The behavior of human dental pulp cell and periodontal cell behavior was also studied through a biomedical experiment over a period of 1-, 3-, and 7-days using culture medium, and the cell death and viability can be inferred with the help of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) since it can detect proteins or biomarkers secreted by cells undergoing apoptosis or necrosis. This study shows that the mechanical grain refinement method and surface modification might improve the mechanical and biomechanical properties of commercially pure (CP) titanium. According to the results of the corrosion loss measurements, 2PassMAO had the lowest corrosion rate, which is determined to be 0.495 mmpy. The electrode potentials for the 1-pass and 2-pass coated samples are 1.44 V and 1.47 V, respectively. This suggests that the coating is highly effective in reducing the corrosion rate of the metallic CP Ti sample. Changes in the grain size and the presence of a high number of grain boundaries have a significant impact on the corrosion resistance of CP Ti. For ECAPED and surface-modified titanium samples in a 3.6% NaCl electrolyte solution, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) properties are similar to Nyquist and Bode plot fitting. In light of ISO 10993-5 guidelines for assessing in vitro cytotoxicity, this study contributes valuable insights into pulp and periodontal cell behavior, focusing specifically on material cytotoxicity, a critical factor determined by a 30% decrease in cell viability.

Abstract:In this study we compared the corrosion behavior of single β-phase alloys: (i) Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr and (ii) Ti-45Nb, that contain similar amount of β-phase stabilizers. Corrosion resistance was analyzed in the PBS+H 2 O 2 solution, which simulates the conditions as can be found during post-operative inflammation. Results of electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, and ion-release measurements revealed that Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr alloy demonstrated significantly higher corrosion resistance compared to Ti-45Nb. Post-immersion microscopic analysis demonstrated that a thinner layer of oxidation products was formed on Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr alloy surface. Overall results allowed to exclude the beneficial role of Nb in tailoring corrosion resistance of Ti-29Nb-13Ta-4.6Zr under simulated inflammatory conditions. The influence of cathodic polarization and simulated inflammation on titanium electrochemistry

Abstract:This study evaluated the influence of simulated inflammation and cathodic polarization on the electrochemical properties of commercially pure titanium (CpTi) and titanium-6%aluminum-4%vanadium (Ti6Al4V). Normal conditions immersed the metals in phosphate buffered saline at open circuit potential (OCP). Inflammatory conditions immersed the metals in a 150 mM hydrogen peroxide titrated to pH = 5.0 at OCP. Cathodic inflammatory conditions immersed the metals in the inflammatory electrolyte at -1 V versus Ag/AgCl. Cathodic polarization scans revealed a more electropositive corrosion potential (Ecorr ) and an increased corrosion current density (Icorr ) for both metals after incubation at inflammatory conditions (CpTi: Ecorr = 171 mV, Icorr = 147 nA/cm(2) and Ti6Al4V: Ecorr = 241 mV and Icorr = 413 nA/cm(2) ) as compared to normal conditions (CpTi: Ecorr = -249 mV, Icorr = 19 nA/cm(2) and Ti6Al4V: Ecorr = -263 mV and Icorr = 11 nA/cm(2) ). Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy showed the polarization resistance (Rp ) decreases and constant phase element (CPE) magnitude increases for both metals when comparing normal (CpTi: Rp = 3.5 MΩ cm(2) , CPE = 35 µS s(α) /cm(2) and Ti6Al4V: Rp = 6.5 MΩ cm(2) and CPE = 30 µS s(α) /cm(2) ) to inflammatory (CpTi: Rp = 79 kΩ cm(2) , CPE = 55 µS s(α) /cm(2) and Ti6Al4V: Rp = 230 kΩ cm(2) and CPE = 56 µS s(α) /cm(2) ) to cathodic inflammatory (CpTi: Rp =24 kΩ cm(2) , CPE = 290 µS s(α) /cm(2) and Ti6Al4V: Rp = 12 kΩ cm(2) and CPE = 250 µS s(α) /cm(2) ) conditions. These observed changes are consistent with the formation of a thin and defective oxide film. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy revealed that inflammatory conditions increased dissolution of both metals and that the addition of cathodic potential significantly increased the dissolution of the beta phase elements of Ti6Al4V.

Abstract:Titanium and its alloys find extensive application within the realms of dentistry and orthopedics due to their remarkable chemical stability. Nevertheless, they are still susceptible to corrosion in harsh environments. Micro-arc oxidation (MAO) emerges as a potent methodology for enhancing the corrosion resistance of titanium and its alloys, achieved through the generation of a ceramic stratum atop the material's surface. The corrosion resistance of MAO coatings in clinical applications is closely related to their microstructure. This manuscript systematically explores the effect of annealing temperature on the phase composition and microstructure of MAO coatings. Furthermore, the evolution of the surface properties and the crystal structure of coatings is meticulously discussed and illustrated. The results show that the corrosion resistance of coatings exhibits an ascending trajectory followed by a subsequent decline, coinciding with the augmentation of the annealing temperature. This behavior can be attributed to the structural evolution of coatings caused by the gradual increase of the annealing temperature. At the optimum temperature (400 °C), the annealing treatment leads to the crystallization of the coating as well as to a decrease in the surface porosity, resulting in the formation of a compact and continuous multilayer microstructure. The decrease in porosity can be attributed to the diffusion-reaction of oxygen from the air with titanium from the discharge channel (titanium oxide), resulting in the formation of TiO 2 particles that effectively fill the pores. The decrease in corrosion resistance of the coatings after annealing at 800 °C is due to the phase transition of TiO 2 which leads to the expansion of cracks inherent in the oxide layer to form A-H cracks. Therefore, this study shows that the microstructure of MAO coatings can be adjusted by post annealing treatment (400 °C) to obtain a desirable oxide layer with appropriate porosity, crystallinity and chemical composition, thus improving its corrosion resistance.

Abstract:Non-isothermal oxidation is one of the important issues related to the safe application of high-temperature titanium alloys, so this study focuses on the non-isothermal oxidation behavior and mechanism of near-α titanium alloys. The thermogravimetry-differential scanning calorimetry (TGA/DSC) method was used to study the non-isothermal oxidation behavior of TA29 titanium alloy heated from room temperature to 1450 °C at a heating rate of 40 °C/min under pure oxygen atmosphere. The results show that non-isothermal oxidation behavior can be divided into five stages, including no oxidation, slow oxidation, accelerated oxidation, severe oxidation and deceleration oxidation; for the three-layer TiO2 scale, Zr, Nb, Ta are enriched in the intermediate layer, while Al is rich in the inner layer and Sn is segregated at the oxide-substrate interface, which is related to their diffusion rates in the subsurface α case. The oxidation mechanism for each stage is: oxygen barrier effect of a thin compact oxide film; oxygen dissolution; lattice transformation accelerating the dissolution and diffusion of oxygen; oxide formation; oxygen barrier effect of recrystallization and sintering microstructure in outer oxide scale. The alloying elements with high valence state and high diffusion rate in α-Ti are favorable to slow down the oxidation rate at the stage governed by oxide formation.
