Abstract:Atomic Fe−N4 moieties are immobilized onto lung‐bubble‐like hollow carbon fibers that encapsulate metallic Ni nanoparticles. The electronic coupling between the Fe−N4 moieties and Ni nanoparticles accelerates the oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction kinetics, while the porous hollow structure with inner cavities provides sufficient and stable triple‐phase interfaces to promote mass transfer. The atomic modulation and structure design synergistically boost the electrochemical performance of the assembled Zn–air batteries. Excellent bifunctional oxygen reduction reaction (ORR)/oxygen evolution reaction (OER) activity and rapid mass transport capability are two important parameters of electrocatalysts for high‐performance rechargeable Zn–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, an efficient atomic modulation and structure design to promote bifunctional activity and mass transport kinetics of an ORR/OER electrocatalyst are reported. Specifically, atomic Fe−N4 moieties are immobilized on premade hollow carbon fibers with encapsulated Ni nanoparticles (Fe‐N@Ni‐HCFs). Synchrotron X‐ray absorption spectroscopy and spherical aberration‐corrected electron microscope analyses confirm the atomic distribution of the active sites and unique lung bubble‐like hollow architecture of the catalyst, while theoretical investigations reveal that the encapsulated Ni nanoparticles can induce electron distribution of the atomic Fe−N4 moieties to reduce reaction energy barriers. As a result, the prepared catalyst possesses enhanced bifunctional ORR/OER activity and well‐constructed gas–solid–liquid interfaces for improved mass transfer. These synergetic advantages endow the binder‐free Fe‐N@Ni‐HCFs electrode with the remarkable power density and cycling stability for ZABs, outperforming the commercial Pt/C+Ir/C benchmark. This exceptional performance suggests that the proposed strategy can be extended to the design and fabrication of electrocatalysts for energy conversion and storage.

In Situ, Fast Constructing Interface/doping-Engineered NiCo Bimetal-Based Composites Boosting Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction for Zinc-Air Battery

Abstract:Investigating cost-effective, high-performance, stable and durable oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is imperative, yet it's still a formidable obstacle in the advancement of metal-air batteries. In this research, NiCobimetallic oxides in situ combined with NiCo-bimetal alloy upon the surface of carbon-based matrix (reduced graphene oxide) (NiCo/Co-NiO/rGO) were synthesized by microwave hydrothermal treatment coupled with an ultrafast Joule heating shock process. The interfacial charge transfer between the bimetal alloy and metal oxide in NiCo/Co-NiO/rGO resulted in electron redistribution at the heterointerface, where *O species migrated to the NiCo alloy surface through Mn+-O-M-0 (M=Ni, =Ni, Co and n=2, =2, 3) bonds, facilitating continuous electron transport between the two phases and unveiling added active sites. Introducing abundant oxygen vacancies by Ni3+ and Co3+ facilitated charge transfer between different valence states and led to forming more active sites, thus significantly enhancing ORR performance. More importantly, solid solution strengthening within the NiCobimetallic alloy mitigated the oxidation and corrosion of the catalyst. Therefore, the as-synthesized NiCo/Co-NiO/rGO(5% Co) exhibited excellent ORR performance under an alkaline medium. It achieved a half-wave potential (E-1/2) of 0.85 V(vs. vs . RHE) and maintained 89.10 % of its current density after a 12-h long-term reaction. The assembled zinc-air battery (ZAB) employing this catalyst proved remarkable specific capacity (807.04 mAh.g(Zn)(-1)), power density (95.54 mW cm(-2)) and cycling stability (over 240 h), outperforming that of commercial Pt/C+RuO2-based ZAB device. This study presents a viable approach for fabricating low-cost dual transition metal-based catalysts, thereby boosting their electrocatalytic performance and enhancing the efficiency and longevity of metal-air batteries.

Abstract:The rational design and synthesis of efficient and durable bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs) and oxygen evolution reactions (OERs) is significant yet challenging for rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Up to now, most attention has been focused on the ORR performance, but the disproportion of OER proficiencies results in poor cycling capabilities and energy waste during charging process. Herein, a dual-active-site hierarchical composite () is constructed by anchoring high OER-active NiFe layered double hydroxide (NiFe-LDH) nanosheets on the surface of ORR-active ZIF-derived carbon-based framework. This design fully utilizes their advantages and synergistic effects, such as good conductivity, hierarchical structure, ORR-active sites of Co, N-codoped carbon (Co-NC) substrate and OER-active sites of NiFe-LDH, to optimize bifunctional catalytic performance and durability in Zn-air batteries. The demonstrates a lower overpotential of 819 mV than single component Co-NC (893 mV), NiFe-LDH (1178 mV) and noble-metal catalysts (957 mV for Pt/C and 1118 mV for RuO2) in alkaline media. Impressively, a high peak power density (107.8 mW cm-2) and excellent durability (over 300 h) are exhibited by Zn-air batteries based on as electrocatalyst. This work provides a facile, low-cost and environmental-friendly strategy to synthesize bifunctional catalysts for efficient and durable zinc-air batteries.

Abstract:To commercialize the rechargeable zinc-air (Zn-air) battery, it is desirable but challenging to design highly active, low-cost, stable, and earth-rich bifunctional electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) to replace rare, expensive, and unstable noble-metal electrocatalysts. Herein, two MOFs are combined under electrostatic interaction and pressure by the way of Ball milling. Then, after post-processing including calcination, acid pickling, and N doping, the bimetal (Fe and Co) and N triple-doped porous carbon electrocatalyst (MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 ) is prepared. Noteworthily, the MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 has bimetallic active sites, high contents of pyridine N and graphite N, large surface area, mesoporous structure, and conductive carbon skeletons, which decide the excellent ORR performance. For ORR, the half-wave potential ( E 1/2 = 0.902 V vs. RHE) of MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 is 27 mV higher than that of 20 wt% Pt/C ( E 1/2 = 0.875 vs. RHE). And the catalyst has also excellent methanol tolerance and stability. The Zn-air battery with MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 as cathode catalyst has higher peak power density (176.5 mW cm −2 ) than that with 20 wt% Pt/C (141.8 mW cm −2 ) and 20 wt% Pt/C + RuO 2 (94.4 mW cm −2 ) as cathode catalyst. Meanwhile, the Zn-air battery with MIL/ZIF-4-700 °C-NH 3 as cathode catalyst exhibits perfect charge-discharge stability (longer than 540 h).

Abstract:The construction of efficient and durable electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) remains a challenge for rechargeable Zn-air batteries (ZABs). Bimetallic phosphide (NiCoP) holds considerable promise as a bifunctional catalyst. Here, an efficient NiCoP-based bifunctional electrocatalyst was fabricated using PCN-222-assembled organophosphorus complexes, specifically 1,1-bis(diphenylphosphine)ferrocene (DPPF). These DPPF complexes serve as sources of phosphorus and metals, undergoing in-situ conversion into Fe-doped NiCoP nanoparticles (Fe-NiCoP) while simultaneously constructing a heteroatom-doped carbon matrix (NPC). The final catalytic structure, composed of ultra-fine Fe-NiCoP nanoparticles confined within the NPC, exhibits superior bifunctional electrocatalytic activity (with a ΔE gap of 0.69 V between OER and ORR) and exceptional stability. In-situ Raman spectroscopy and DFT calculations reveal that the high performance arises from the synergistic effect of Fe-NiCoP and NPC, where Fe-NiCoP triggers the catalytic activity of the attached NPC. The calculated active site is identified as the C atom near the N atom on the NPC, lowering the potential barrier for O-containing intermediate compounds and enhancing the catalytic performance. In addition, NPC protects the Fe-NiCoP core from oxidation during battery cycles, allowing ZABs equipped with this catalyst to achieve high power density and long-term cycling performance.

Abstract:Promoting the performance of Zn-air batteries urgently requires rational design of electrocatalysts with highly efficient mass and charge transfer capacity. In this study, two-dimensional (2D) hierarchical Fe-N-C materials were developed as highly active oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts. Benefiting from the enhanced mesoporosity and two orders of magnitude higher electrical conductivity, the as-obtained catalysts unify efficient mass transport and expedite charge transfer. Therefore, Zn-air battery integrated with this catalyst achieves an ultrahigh specific capacity of 798 mAh g(zn)(-1) (close to theoretical value of 820 mAh g(zn)(-1)) and excellent durability for over 130 h. Our work paves a new way to engineer the transfer capacity of triple-phase boundary to boost metal-air battery. the performance of metal-air battery.

Abstract:Developing carbon-based catalysts with metal‐nitrogen‐carbon (M-N-C) active sites as efficient and low-cost bifunctional catalysts to replace precious metal catalysts for rechargeable zinc-air batteries devices has garnered significant attention. Herein, nitrogen-doped submicron carbon-based spherical bifunctional electrocatalysts (CNPD-CoFeNi) with abundant atom-scale Co/Fe/Ni M-N-C active sites and defects were synthesized. The introduction of massive amounts of Zn species increases the spatial distance of Co/Fe/Ni metal sites to prevent aggregation during pyrolysis, and the evaporation of Zn at high temperatures creates defects synergizing with M-N-C. Consequently, CNPD-CoFeNi possesses a stable carbon-based spherical structure, high electrical conductivity, rich nitrogen content, abundant atom-scale Co/Fe/Ni M-N-C active sites, and defects, displaying outstanding durability, oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity with a half-wave potential of 0.87 V, and satisfactory OER performance, surpassing or comparable with the state-of-art Pt/C and RuO 2 , respectively. Notably, liquid Zn-air batteries with CNPD-CoFeNi catalyst exhibit an exceptional high peak power density of 146.5 mW cm −2 and stable charge-discharge cycling over 270 h, outperforming Pt/C-RuO 2 based devices. Additionally, the all-solid-state Zn-air battery also displays satisfactory practicability and stability. The synthesis strategy and its remarkable results provide valuable guidance and inspiration for the future advancement of precious metal substitutes in ORR/OER and rechargeable zinc-air batteries.

Abstract:Applications of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are generally hampered by limited efficiency and poor stability of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the air cathode. The key to solving the problem is the highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst. Herein, the bifunctional electrocatalyst of nitrogen-doping carbon-coated (N x ) core-shell nanostructures was fabricated by one-step physical vapor evaporation technology of DC arc plasma and subsequent thermal treatment in a flowing nitrogen. The energy state in the synthesis of precursor was monitored by a real-time optical emission spectroscopy (OES) measurement. The obtained (N 15 ) nanoparticles was proved to be an excellent electrocatalyst for both ORR and OER processes, the OER overpotential is 326 mV which is better than that of RuO 2 (405 mV) and the ORR catalytic reaction is close to the typical 4 e − process. It is indicated that all-solid Zn-air battery assembled with this (N 15 ) electrocatalyst provides a high open circuit voltage of 1.394 V, and a high peak power density of 59.7 mW cm −2 . The synergistic effect between the bimetallic FeNi core and the N-doped carbon shell is responsible for the bifunctional activities, and such a core-shell nanostructure can prevent the catalyst from corrosion in working. This study provides a new approach for the design and preparation of transition metal alloys nanostructures encapsulated into the carbon-shell with quantitative nitrogen-doping, such a core-shell structured nanocapsule has excellent potential as the electrochemical bifunctional catalyst in some renewable energy devices.

Abstract:The sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) pose significant challenges for the viability of rechargeable Zn-air batteries. Developing efficient, cost-effective, stable, and dual-purpose oxygen electrocatalysts remains a formidable hurdle. In this study, we successfully synthesized a highly promising chainmail catalyst named FeNi@NC, comprising ultrathin carbon shells encapsulating FeNi alloy nanoparticles on N-doped graphene-like nanosheets. The strong synergistic effects between FeNi alloys and N-doped carbon shells result in outstanding bifunctional catalytic activity, particularly in alkaline media. Consequently, Zn-air batteries incorporating FeNi@NC as the catalyst demonstrate exceptional performance, operating reliably at high power density with extended lifespan. Furthermore, computational analyses provided further confirmation of the catalytic activity and revealed that the electron transfer from FeNi alloy nanoparticles to the carbon shells activates the carbon surface, leading to enhanced catalytic performance. This research not only sheds light on the rational design and synthesis of heteroatom-doped carbon materials supporting the growth-constrained transition metal alloys but also offers a practical solution for advancing the application of Zn-air batteries. Abstract:Designing non-precious metal electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) not only should improve the activity of the catalytic reaction sites, but also need to consider the transport channels of the reactants and electrolyte inside the catalysts to enhance the utilization of active sites in the catalyst. Here, Fe/Ni dual-active sites anchored on the unique honeycomb hierarchical porous carbon materials are successfully prepared by pyrolysis of Fe and Ni bimetal co-doped covalent organic polymer with the assistance of pore-forming agents. The unique honeycomb hierarchical porous structures are favorable for transport and diffusion of oxygen and electrolyte during the electrochemical reaction process, so that the internal active sites can be fully utilized to improve the catalytic activity. The as-synthesized catalyst exhibits excellent ORR (E 1/2 = 874 mV) and OER (overpotential = 352 mV at 10 mA cm −2 ) performance. More importantly, the rechargeable liquid Zn-air battery assembled with the catalyst exhibits a large specific capacity of 781.7 mA h g −1 and a long-term cycle stability with repeatedly charging and discharging for 450 h at 20 mA cm −2 . Additionally, an all-solid-state flexible Zn-air battery based on this catalyst as cathode shows a maximum power density of 83.5 mW cm −2 .

Abstract:The development of efficient and low-cost catalysts for cathodic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in Zn-air battery (ZAB) is a key factor in reducing costs and achieving industrialization. Here, a novel segregated CoNiPt alloy embedded in N-doped porous carbon with a nanoflowers (NFs)-like hierarchy structure is synthesized through pyrolyzing Hofmann-type metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The unique hierarchical NFs structure exposes more active sites and facilitates the transportation of reaction intermediates, thus accelerating the reaction kinetics. Impressively, the resulting 15% CoNiPt@C NFs catalyst exhibits outstanding alkaline ORR activity with a half-wave potential of 0.93 V, and its mass activity is 7.5 times higher than that of commercial Pt/C catalyst, surpassing state-of-the-art noble metal-based catalysts. Furthermore, the assembled CoNiPt@C+RuO2 ZAB demonstrates a maximum power density of 172 mW cm-2 , which is superior to that of commercial Pt/C+RuO2 ZAB. Experimental results reveal that the intrinsic ORR mass activity is attributed to the synergistic interaction between oxygen defects and pyrrolic/graphitic N species, which optimizes the adsorption energy of the intermediate species in the ORR process and greatly enhances catalytic activity. This work provides a practical and feasible strategy for synthesizing cost-effective alkaline ORR catalysts by optimizing the electronic structure of MOF-derived catalysts.

Abstract:Rational design and synthesis of non-precious metal electrocatalysts for highly efficient oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is urgently required. Recently, single atom catalysts (SACs) have sparked intense interests due to their maximum atom utilization efficiency and excellent properties in electrocatalysis. Herein, we reported an efficient ORR electrocatalyst with atomically dispersed FeN4 sites anchored on 3D hierarchically ordered microporous-mesoporous-macroporous nitrogen doped carbon (3DOM Fe-N-C). Owing to the synergism of highly dispersed FeN4 active sites and 3D hierarchically ordered porous architecture, 3DOM Fe-N-C-900, which was obtained via pyrolysis of ferrocene-encapsulated macro-microporous ZIF-8 precursor at 900 °C, exhibited an outstanding ORR activity in both alkaline (E1/2 of 0.875 V) and acid mediums (E1/2 of 0.784 V), as well as superior stability (only changed 2 mV after 10,000 cycles in alkaline medium). Moreover, 3DOM Fe-N-C-900 as ORR catalyst in zinc-air battery achieved a high power density of 235 mW cm−2 and a high specific capacity of 768.3 mAh g−1, exceeding that driven by Pt/C. Our results revealed that the 3D hierarchically porous architecture of electrocatalysts could facilitate mass transport and increase the accessibility of active sites, thus optimizing their performances in ORR. This work well demonstrated the importance of rationally engineering porous structure of the catalyst for highly efficient ORR.

Abstract:Iron‐nitrogen‐carbon materials are being intensively studied as the most promising substitutes for Pt‐based electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). A rational design of the morphology and porous structure can promote the accessibility of the active site and the reactants/products transportation, accelerating the reaction kinetics. Herein, 1D porous iron/nitrogen‐doped carbon nanorods (Fe/N‐CNRs) with a hierarchically micro/mesoporous structure are prepared by pyrolyzing the in situ polymerized pyrrole on the surface of Fe‐MIL‐88B‐derived 1D Fe2O3 nanorods (MIL: Material Institut Lavoisier). The Fe2O3 nanorods not only partially dissolve to generate Fe3+ for initiating polymerization but serve as templates to form the 1D structure during polymerization. Furthermore, the pyrrole coated Fe2O3 nanorod architecture prevents the porous structure from collapsing and protects Fe from aggregation to yield atomic Fe‐N4 moieties during carbonization. The obtained Fe/N‐CNRs display exceptional ORR activities (E1/2 = 0.90 V) and satisfactory long‐term durabilities, exceeding those for Pt/C. Furthermore, the unprecedented Fe/N‐CNRs catalytic performance is demonstrated with Zn‐air batteries, including a superior maximum power density (181.8 mW cm−2), specific capacity (998.67 W h kg−1), and long‐term durability over 100 h. The prominent performance stems from the unique 1D structure, hierarchical pore system, high surface area, and homogeneously dispersed single‐atom Fe‐N4 moieties.

Abstract:The development of earth-abundant and cost-effective electro-catalysts at the air cathodes for both oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) with sluggish kinetics are central to the overall performance of rechargeable metal-air batteries, remaining an issue that is gaining increasing interest in recent years. Herein, we report a nitrogen-doped mesoporous carbon supported clustered CoOx composite catalyst (CoOx/NMC) synthesized from the anchored atomically dispersed CoOOH species by an efficient two-step nucleation method. Due to the synergistic and size effects, CoOx/NMC exhibits an enhanced bifunctional electrocatalytic performance in alkaline media than the state of the art commercial Pt/C catalyst for ORR and the OER catalyst (Ir/C). More importantly, the advanced CoOx/NMC catalyst enables recharge Zn-air batteries (ZABs) to achieve long-term cycling performance over 400 h by galvanostatic charge-discharge at current density of 10 mA cm(-2) with high efficiency, suggesting a very promising alternative to the conventional Pt/C and Ir/C catalysts for an air cathode.
Electrocatalytic Oxygen Reduction Reaction by the Pd/Fe-N-C Catalyst and Application in a Zn–Air Battery

Abstract:Developing a non-platinum catalyst that effectively catalyzes the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) is highly significant for metal–air batteries. Metal and nitrogen co-doped carbons (M-N-Cs) have emerged as alternative candidates to platinum. In this work, dual-metal Pd/Fe-N-C electrocatalysts were synthesized by the one-step pyrolysis of phytic acid, melamine, and Pd/Fe-based salts. The Pd/Fe-N-C catalyst exhibited a good catalytic ability during the ORR process and outperformed the commercial Pt/C catalyst as regards mass activity, catalytic stability, and methanol tolerance. It was found that Pd-Nx is the active center, and the synergistic effect from the Fe component introduction endowed the Pd/Fe-N-C with an excellent catalytic performance towards the ORR. When assembled into a Zn–air battery, its specific capacity was ~775 mAh gZn−1. Meanwhile, the peak power density could reach 3.85 W mgPd−1, i.e., 3.4 times that of the commercial Pt/C catalyst (1.13 W mgPt−1). This implies that the Pd/Fe-N-C catalyst has potential applications in metal–air batteries.

Abstract:Due to the limited sources, high cost, and poor long-term stability of noble metal catalysts, the large-scale commercial application of zinc-air batteries has been restricted. Therefore, designing non-noble metal catalysts with excellent activity and stability for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) blossoms in the ascendant. Herein, we report a hollow star-shaped dual-functional electrocatalyst with uniform and dispersed Fe 3 N/Fe nanoparticles derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIFs) by a simple sacrificial template strategy. This hollow structure has the characteristics of low density, thin shell, and high permeability, and its internal cavity not only provides additional three-phase interfaces to accelerate O 2 reduction and evolution but also promotes the diffusion of reactants onto the catalyst. By controlling the input amount of iron metal salt, the dispersion degree of Fe NP can be effectively adjusted, and the generated Fe 3 N introduces abundant Fe-N X active sites. Density functional theory calculations show that the strong affinity between Fe 3 N and Fe NP is favorable for promoting the oxygen intermediate reaction, achieving a job-synergistic catalytic effect and high reaction kinetics. The synthesized Fe 3 N/Fe NP -N-C-3.3% exhibits excellent dual-functional activity for OER and ORR, with a high half-wave potential of 0.867 V for ORR (better than the commercial Pt/C of 0.82 V) and an overpotential of only 294 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 . The rechargeable Zn-air battery prepared with Fe 3 N/Fe NP -N-C-3.3% as an air cathode shows a long-term cycling performance of over 750 h and a maximum power density of 205 mW cm −2 . The flexible Zn-air battery has a high open-circuit voltage of 1.48 V and a maximum power density of 52.6 mW cm −2 , showing glamorous commercial prospects.

Abstract:Rational design and synthesis of non-precious-metal bifunctional catalysts for oxygen reduction and evolution reactions (ORR and OER) is highly pursued to improve reaction efficiency of Zn-air batteries. Herein, an innovative 0D-1D-2D hierarchical structure material (denoted as FeCoNi-N-rGO) is developed by a facile two-step synthesis strategy to construct N-doped carbon nanotubes (CNTs) and carbon nanospheres (CNSs) for encapsulating ternary Fe/Co/Ni alloy nanoparticles on the surface of reduced graphene oxide (rGO). Specifically, abundant Fe/Co/Ni alloy nanoparticles and M-N-C active sites generated by transition metals (Co, Ni, Fe) coupling with N-doped carbon (CNTs, CNSs, and rGO) can provide the FeCoNi-N-rGO with superior OER and ORR properties; meanwhile, the hierarchical structure endows large specific surface area to expose more active sites and to facilitate mass transfer. Typically, the FeCoNi-N-rGO exhibits a high ORR half-wave potential of 0.836 V and a low OER overpotential of 440 mV at 10 mA cm−2 in 0.1 M KOH. Moreover, the FeCoNi-N-rGO-based rechargeable Zn-air battery can deliver a high peak power density (152.5 mW cm−2), specific capacity (766 mAh g−1) and excellent stability (more than 200 h), surpassing commercial Pt/C-RuO2 catalysts. Therefore, this work will offer an easy fabrication strategy to design bifunctional catalysts with desirable performances for Zn-air batteries.

Abstract:Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have sparked great interest, but their wide-ranging applications are limited by sluggish cathode reactions (ORR and OER). In this work, a multifunctional 3D catalyst (FeNi alloy/porous carbon) was easily fabricated by introducing Fe3+ and Ni2+ to modulate in-situ vapor phase grown carbon nanotubes. The as -prepared catalyst FNSNC73-800 displays abundant mesoporous, massive structural defects, and multiple active sites, which greatly facilitate the transport of oxygen species and charge transfer during the reaction. Due to the excellent ORR and OER performance, FNSNC73-800 shows a narrow voltage gap (Delta E) of 0.76 V, which is su-perior to recent reports. Notably, the secondary zinc-air battery with this catalyst displays a high-peak power density (210 mW cm-2), while maintaining an ultra-low potential gap (0.74 V) after a long-term charge -discharge cycle of 200 h. This effort presents a facile strategy for designing economical and efficient 3D catalysts for zinc-air batteries and more energy devices.

Abstract:The spatial immobilization of PtPdFeCoNi HEA NPs and multimetallic single atoms on 3D hierarchically ordered porous nitrogen‐doped carbon (HOPNC) skeleton, as well as the successful construction of interconnected channels for fast mass transfer, render the as‐prepared PtPdFeCoNi/HOPNC superior bifunctional electrocatalytic performances for both ORR and OER and excellent performance for zinc–air battery. Developing efficient oxygen electrocatalysts with low cost, high catalytic activity, and robust stability remains a formidable challenge for rechargeable zinc–air batteries (ZABs). Herein, highly dispersed ultrasmall PtPdFeCoNi high‐entropy alloy nanoparticles with a size of ≈ 2 nm and randomly distributed multimetallic single atoms spatially immobilized on the 3D hierarchically ordered porous nitrogen‐doped carbon skeleton (denoted as PtPdFeCoNi/HOPNC) are successfully synthesized via ultra‐rapid Joule heating process. The spatial immobilization on 3D HOPNC skeleton is the key to the high dispersion of multi‐active sites of oxygen electrocatalysts, and the formed hierarchical pore structure is conducive to the successful construction of the rapid mass transfer channel. As a result, the as‐prepared PtPdFeCoNi/HOPNC exhibits a positive half‐wave potential of 0.866 V versus RHE for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), a low overpotential of 310 mV at 10 mA cm−2 for oxygen evolution reaction (OER), and low Tafel slopes for both ORR and OER. Furthermore, ZAB using PtPdFeCoNi/HOPNC as bifunctional oxygen catalysts exhibits excellent rate performances and superior cycling stability, surpassing that of a commercial Pt/C‐RuO2 mixture. The spatial immobilization strategy of HOPNC provides a new idea for the design and synthesis of efficient catalysts for various applications.
