Abstract:Accelerating the sluggish anode reaction in a Zn–air battery can improve its energy efficiency, but the large-scale development of this battery is hindered by the lack of bifunctional catalysts. Herein, we designed a one-step carbonization strategy for synthesizing monodispersed Co nanoparticles supported on N-doped carbon nanotube (Co/CNT), which shows excellent bifunctional electrocatalytic performance with long-term durability for oxygen reduction reaction/oxygen evolution reaction. The formation of carbon substrates from the carbonization of nitrogenous organic molecules are benefit to capture more Co nanoparticles though strong metal–substrate interaction, then construct high-density effective active sites of the Lewis base for accelerating the electrocatalytic reaction process. To verify its superior performance, a rechargeable Zn–air battery with a Co/CNT air electrode was subsequently constructed. The battery exhibits an open-circuit voltage of 1.41 V and a specific discharge capacity of 835.2 mAh/gZn, which can be continuously charged and discharged with good cycle stability. Our study provides a new strategy for developing various practical carbon-based non-noble metallic bifunctional electrocatalysts with promising performance in electrocatalysis and batteries to achieve the target of carbon neutrality.

Abstract:A two‐step anchoring method is utilized to prepare ultrasmall Fe nanoclusters (NCTs) dispersed by carbon polyhedrons interconnected with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The unique structure and abundant edge and corner sites of Fe NCTs endow its brilliant oxygen reduction reaction activity. Due to the porous structure of carbon polyhedrons and high conductivity of CNTs, Fe NCTs also delivers excellent zinc‐air battery performance. The catalytic activity of metal catalyst is closely related to its particle size. Yet, the size effect in electrocatalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), an important reaction for metal‐air batteries and fuel cells, has not been clearly studied. Herein, a two‐step anchoring method is utilized to control the Fe catalyst in forms of nanoparticles (NPs), ultrasmall nanoclusters (NCTs), and isolated atoms as well as stabilized and dispersed by carbon polyhedrons interconnected with carbon nanotubes (CNTs). The uniformly distributed Fe NCTs displays superior ORR performance compared with Fe NPs, isolated Fe atoms, and commercial Pt/C. The brilliant ORR activity of Fe NCTs is a result of its unique electron structure and abundant edge and corner active sites. Due to the porous structure of carbon polyhedrons and high electron conductivity of CNTs, Fe NCTs also delivers an excellent discharge performance in zinc‐air battery with a peak power density of 213.3 mW cm−2 and long‐term stability. In these findings, a new strategy for the design of metal NCTs catalysts applied in various catalytic reactions is opened up.

N, S Co-Doped Carbon with Embedment of FeNi Alloy As Bifunctional Oxygen Electrocatalysts for Rechargeable Zinc-air Batteries

Abstract:Zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have sparked great interest, but their wide-ranging applications are limited by sluggish cathode reactions (ORR and OER). In this work, a multifunctional 3D catalyst (FeNi alloy/porous carbon) was easily fabricated by introducing Fe3+ and Ni2+ to modulate in-situ vapor phase grown carbon nanotubes. The as -prepared catalyst FNSNC73-800 displays abundant mesoporous, massive structural defects, and multiple active sites, which greatly facilitate the transport of oxygen species and charge transfer during the reaction. Due to the excellent ORR and OER performance, FNSNC73-800 shows a narrow voltage gap (Delta E) of 0.76 V, which is su-perior to recent reports. Notably, the secondary zinc-air battery with this catalyst displays a high-peak power density (210 mW cm-2), while maintaining an ultra-low potential gap (0.74 V) after a long-term charge -discharge cycle of 200 h. This effort presents a facile strategy for designing economical and efficient 3D catalysts for zinc-air batteries and more energy devices.
g-C3N4 promoted MOF-derived Fe single atoms anchored on N-doped hierarchically porous carbon for high-performance Zn-air batteries

Abstract:Exploring efficient, easy-to-manufacture, and inexpensive bifunctional electrocatalysts with abundant accessible active sites is crucial for rechargeable zinc-air batteries (ZABs). Herein, we report the strategy consisting of the space confinement and pore-making engineering to fabricate single-atom catalyst enriched with Fe-N4 sites anchored on N-doped hierarchically porous carbon (Fe-NC-C3N4). The optimized Fe-NC-C3N4 exhibits excellent oxygen reduction/evolution reaction (ORR/OER) activities with a half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.90 V vs. RHE and a promising low overpotential of 0.305 V vs. RHE at 10 mA·cm-2 in alkaline electrolyte. These superior catalytic activities are attributed to the combined effect between the atomic active sites and the well-balanced micro-meso-macropore structures. The homemade liquid Zn-air battery (ZAB) assembled with Fe-NC-C3N4 catalyst displays a power density of 133.59 mW·cm-2 and a significant energy density of 882.58 mAh·g-1, exceeding those of the equipment with commercial Pt/C-RuO2 (56.82 mW·cm-2 and 643.87 mAh·g-1, respectively). Particularly, the corresponding flexible wearable ZAB manifests outstanding foldability and cyclical stability. This work opens a new perspective for the structural design of single-atom catalysts in the energy storage and conversion area.
Job-synergistic engineering from Fe 3 N/Fe sites and sharp-edge effect of hollow star-shaped nitrogen-doped carbon structure for high-performance zinc-air batteries

Abstract:Due to the limited sources, high cost, and poor long-term stability of noble metal catalysts, the large-scale commercial application of zinc-air batteries has been restricted. Therefore, designing non-noble metal catalysts with excellent activity and stability for both oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) blossoms in the ascendant. Herein, we report a hollow star-shaped dual-functional electrocatalyst with uniform and dispersed Fe 3 N/Fe nanoparticles derived from zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIFs) by a simple sacrificial template strategy. This hollow structure has the characteristics of low density, thin shell, and high permeability, and its internal cavity not only provides additional three-phase interfaces to accelerate O 2 reduction and evolution but also promotes the diffusion of reactants onto the catalyst. By controlling the input amount of iron metal salt, the dispersion degree of Fe NP can be effectively adjusted, and the generated Fe 3 N introduces abundant Fe-N X active sites. Density functional theory calculations show that the strong affinity between Fe 3 N and Fe NP is favorable for promoting the oxygen intermediate reaction, achieving a job-synergistic catalytic effect and high reaction kinetics. The synthesized Fe 3 N/Fe NP -N-C-3.3% exhibits excellent dual-functional activity for OER and ORR, with a high half-wave potential of 0.867 V for ORR (better than the commercial Pt/C of 0.82 V) and an overpotential of only 294 mV for OER at 10 mA cm −2 . The rechargeable Zn-air battery prepared with Fe 3 N/Fe NP -N-C-3.3% as an air cathode shows a long-term cycling performance of over 750 h and a maximum power density of 205 mW cm −2 . The flexible Zn-air battery has a high open-circuit voltage of 1.48 V and a maximum power density of 52.6 mW cm −2 , showing glamorous commercial prospects.

Abstract:Active component management and microengineering of metal nanoparticles are significant challenges for efficient M/N/C electrocatalysts, as a crucial electrode material for reversible zinc–air batteries, because of the lack of a multifunctional structural strategy in the electrocatalytic preparation process. Here, a convenient, one-step pyrolysis method was introduced into the preparation process of a difunctional electrocatalyst, an Fe-, Co-, and N-codoped carbon-based cube hybrid (Co7Fe3/CFNC) with abundant active components, including metallic Co7Fe3 nanoparticles and Fe/Co–N x species. The as-constructed Co7Fe3/CFNC demonstrates impressive activity/stability for ORR/OER. Moreover, practical zinc–air battery building with Co7Fe3/CFNC electrocatalysts reveals a superior cycling stability for 224 h. Our work could educate a new applicable branch for designing multifunctional catalysts and regulating their active sites to apply the energy and environment.

Abstract:Applications of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) are generally hampered by limited efficiency and poor stability of oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the air cathode. The key to solving the problem is the highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalyst. Herein, the bifunctional electrocatalyst of nitrogen-doping carbon-coated (N x ) core-shell nanostructures was fabricated by one-step physical vapor evaporation technology of DC arc plasma and subsequent thermal treatment in a flowing nitrogen. The energy state in the synthesis of precursor was monitored by a real-time optical emission spectroscopy (OES) measurement. The obtained (N 15 ) nanoparticles was proved to be an excellent electrocatalyst for both ORR and OER processes, the OER overpotential is 326 mV which is better than that of RuO 2 (405 mV) and the ORR catalytic reaction is close to the typical 4 e − process. It is indicated that all-solid Zn-air battery assembled with this (N 15 ) electrocatalyst provides a high open circuit voltage of 1.394 V, and a high peak power density of 59.7 mW cm −2 . The synergistic effect between the bimetallic FeNi core and the N-doped carbon shell is responsible for the bifunctional activities, and such a core-shell nanostructure can prevent the catalyst from corrosion in working. This study provides a new approach for the design and preparation of transition metal alloys nanostructures encapsulated into the carbon-shell with quantitative nitrogen-doping, such a core-shell structured nanocapsule has excellent potential as the electrochemical bifunctional catalyst in some renewable energy devices.

Abstract:The development of efficient single-atom catalysts (SACs) for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) remains a formidable challenge, primarily due to the symmetric charge distribution of metal single-atom sites (M-N 4 ). To address such issue, herein, Fe-N x sites coupled synergistic catalysts fabrication strategy is presented to break the uniform electronic distribution, thus enhancing the intrinsic catalytic activity. Precisely, atomically dispersed Fe-N x sites supported on N/S-doped mesoporous carbon (NSC) coupled with FeS@C core-shell nanoparticles (FAS-NSC@950) is synthesized by a facile hydrothermal reaction and subsequent pyrolysis. Due to the presence of an in situ-grown conductive graphitic layer (shell), the FeS nanoparticles (core) effectively adjust the electronic structure of single-atom Fe sites and facilitate the ORR kinetics via short/long-range coupling interactions. Consequently, FAS-NSC@950 displays a more positive half-wave potential ( E 1/2 ) of 0.871 V with a significantly boosted ORR kinetics (Tafel slope = 52.2 mV dec −1 ), outpacing the commercial Pt/C ( E 1/2 = 0.84 V and Tafel slope = 54.6 mV dec −1 ). As a bifunctional electrocatalyst, it displays a smaller bifunctional activity parameter (Δ E ) of 0.673 V, surpassing the Pt/C-RuO 2 combination (Δ E = 0.724 V). Besides, the FAS-NSC@950-based zinc-air battery (ZAB) displays superior power density, specific capacity, and long-term cycling performance to the Pt/C-Ir/C-based ZAB. This work significantly contributes to the field by offering a promising strategy to enhance the catalytic activity of SACs for ORR, with potential implications for energy conversion and storage technologies.

N-regulated three-dimensional turf-like carbon nanosheet loaded with FeCoNi nanoalloys as bifunctional electrocatalysts for durable zinc-air batteries

Abstract:N-regulated three-dimensional (3D) turf-like carbon material loaded with FeCoNi nanoalloys (F-CNS-CNT), composed of carbon nanotubes (CNT) grown in situ on carbon nanosheets(CNS), was synthesized using a low-temperature solution combustion method and organic compounds rich in pyridinic-N. This distinct structure significantly expands the effective electrochemical surface area, revealing an abundance of active sites and enhancing the mass transfer capability for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Both experimental observations and theoretical calculations corroborate that the synergy between the FeCoNi nanoalloy and the highly pyridinic N-doped carbon substrate optimizes the adsorption and desorption-free energy of oxygen intermediates, resulting in a remarkable improvement of intrinsic ORR/OER activity. Therefore, the derived F-CNS-CNT electrocatalyst can present a favorable half-wave potential of 0.85 V (ORR) and a lower overpotential of 260 mV (corresponding to a current density of 10 mA cm-2, OER) in alkaline media. Moreover, when employed in the air cathode of a flowable zinc-air battery, the electrocatalyst exhibits exceptional discharge and charge performance, including a high power density of 144.6 mW cm-2, a high specific capacity of 801 mAh g-1, and an impressive cycling stability of 600 cycles at a current density of 10 mA cm-2. Notably, these results markedly surpass those of the commercial catalyst Pt/C + IrO2.

Abstract:Zinc–air batteries are recognized for their environmental friendliness and high energy density; however, the slow kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) at the air electrode hinder their commercial viability. The research focuses on synthesizing cubic hollow carbon structures derived from Metal–Organic Frameworks (MOFs), which enhance catalytic performance through improved conductivity and mass transfer. The resulting Fe/Fe 3 C/HCNB catalyst demonstrates a half-wave potential of 0.826 V for ORR and achieves a peak power density of 274 mW cm −2 in zinc–air batteries, surpassing commercial Pt/C catalysts. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy reveals that the hollow structure enhances hydrophilicity and reduces solution resistance, facilitating greater active site engagement in electrochemical reactions. The study concludes that the unique structural features of Fe/Fe 3 C/HCNB significantly improve discharge performance and stability, positioning it as a promising alternative for zinc–air battery applications.

Abstract:The rational design of morphology and structure for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts still remains a critical challenge. Herein, we successfully construct defect-rich and hierarchically porous Fe-N-C nanosheets (Fe-N-CNSs), by taking advantage of metal-organic complexation and a mesoporous template. Benefiting from the advantages of high density of active sites, fast mass transfer channels, and sufficient reaction area, the optimal Fe-N-CNSs demonstrate satisfactory ORR activity with an excellent half-wave potential of up to 0.87 V, desirable durability, and robust methanol tolerance. Noteworthy, the Fe-N-CNSs based zinc–air battery shows significant performance with a peak power density of 128.20 mW cm−2 and open circuit voltage of 1.53 V, which reveals that the Fe-N-CNSs catalysts present promising practical application prospects. Therefore, we believe that this research will provide guidance for the optimization of Fe-N-C materials.

Abstract:Metal and nitrogen-doped carbon (M-N-C) catalysts are generally considered to be ideal substitutes for platinum-based noble metal oxygen reduction catalysts. Owing to the significant Fenton effect of the Fe element and the subsequent instability, the Fenton-free Co-based N-C catalyst should perform better in ORR. Pyrolysis of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) is commonly used to make Co-based N-C catalysts. Still, most of the MOF-derived catalysts reported so far have a microporous structure, which results in hindered mass transfer and partial Co-N-x active sites that cannot function as catalysis. Herein, Co nanoclusters (NCs) with high loading (7.96 wt%) were prepared on hierarchically porous carbon substrates via a carboxylate-assisted strategy. The mesoporous structure of Co nanoclusters/nitrogen-doped hierarchically porous carbon (Co NCs/HPNC) can facilitate mass transport. The smaller size Co nanoclusters can increase the contact area between the carbon matrix and Co-N-x active sites to effectively expose more active centers and increase the density of Co-N-x active sites. A synergistic effect of the two can greatly improve ORR results. Surprisingly, the Co NCs/HPNC catalyst shows excellent ORR activity under alkaline conditions, and Co NCs/HPNC has a better half-wave potential (0.88 V vs. 0.84 V) compared with 20 wt% Pt/C. And it only loses 5% of its current density after 36,000 s of operation, which is significantly less than Pt/C (20%). Furthermore, Co NCs/HPNC battery have a greater open-circuit potential, power density, and specific capacity than Pt/C-based zinc-air batteries (1.51 V, 109.6 mW cm(-2), 818.1 mAh gZn(-1) vs. 1.46 V, 92.4 mW cm(-2), 716.8 mAh gZn(-1)). This discovery paves the way for high-efficiency electrocatalysts with hierarchically porous architectures and a large number of metal loads to be developed. (C) 2022 Elsevier B.V. Encapsulating CoNi nanoparticles into nitrogen-doped carbon nanotube arrays as bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst for rechargeable zinc-air batteries

Abstract:The high theoretical specific energy and environmental friendliness of zinc-air batteries (ZABs) have garnered significant attention. However, the practical application of ZABs requires overcoming the sluggish kinetics associated with oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Herein, 3D self-supported nitrogen-doped carbon nanotubes (N-CNTs) arrays encapsulated by CoNi nanoparticles on carbon fiber cloth (CoNi@N-CNTs/CFC) are synthesized as bifunctional catalysts for OER and ORR. The 3D interconnected N-CNTs arrays not only improve the electrical conductivity, the permeation and gas escape capabilities of the electrode, but also enhance the corrosion resistance of CoNi metals. DFT calculations reveal that the co-existence of Co and Ni synergistically reduces the energy barrier for OOH conversion to OH, thereby optimizing the Gibbs free energy of the catalysts. Additionally, analysis of the change in energy barrier during the rate-determining step suggests that the primary catalytic active center is Ni site for OER. As a result, CoNi@N-CNTs/CFC exhibits superior catalytic activity with an overpotential of 240 mV at 10 mA cm-2 toward OER, and the onset potential of 0.92 V for ORR. Moreover, utilization of CoNi@N-CNTs/CFC in liquid and solid-state ZABs exhibited exceptional stability, manifesting a consistent cycling operation lasting for 100 and 15 h, respectively.
Stable confinement of Fe/Fe3C in Fe, N-codoped carbon nanotube towards robust zinc-air batteries

Abstract:Catalytic oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have garnered great attention as the key character in metal-air batteries. Herein, we developed a superior nonprecious bifunctional oxygen electrocatalyst, fabricated through spatial confinement of Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals in pyridinic N and Fe-Nx rich carbon nanotubes (Fe/Fe3C-N-CNTs). During ORR, the resultant electrocatalyst exhibits positive onset potential of 1.0 V (vs. RHE), large half-wave potentials of 0.88 V (vs. RHE), which is more positive than Pt/C (0.98 V and 0.83 V, respectively). Remarkably, Fe/Fe3C-N-CNTs exhibits outstanding durability and great methanol tolerance, exceeding Pt/C and most reported nonprecious metal-based oxygen reduction electrocatalysts. Moreover, Fe/Fe3C-N-CNTs show a markedly low potential at j =10 mA/cm2, small Tafel slopes and extremely high stability for OER. Impressively, the Fe/Fe3C-N-CNTs-based Zn-air batteries demonstrate high power density of 183 mW/cm2 and robust charge/discharge stability. It is revealed that the spatial confinement effect can impede the aggregation and corrosion of Fe/Fe3C nanocrystals. Meanwhile, Fe/Fe3C and Fe-Nx play synergistic effect on boosting the ORR/OER activity, which provides an important guideline for construction of inexpensive nonprecious metal-carbon hybrid nanomaterials.

Novel design of hollow carbon nanocage modified with nanotubes as a bifunctional electrocatalyst for high performance Zn-air batteries

Abstract:Microcavities play a crucial role as microreactors in the transport of molecular/ionic guests and the exposure of active sites, thus significantly influencing the electrocatalytic performance. This study prepares Co/N-codoped hollow carbon (HT-CoN/C) with surface-distributed carbon nanotubes by pyrolysis of PDA-coated Zn/Co bimetallic ZIF (BM-ZIF@PDA). Benefiting from the hierarchical porous structure, high specific surface area (307.17 m2 g-1) and abundant Co clusters, the HT-CoN/C exhibits remarkable bifunctional oxygen electrocatalytic activity with an overpotential of the ORR/OER processes (ΔE = 0.703 V). The density functional theory (DFT) calculations also verify that the configuration of C-coated N-coordinated Co clusters (Co4-Nx) affect the electrocatalytic activity of ORR and OER, illustrating the source of the excellent oxygen electrocatalytic activity of HT-CoN/C. The aqueous rechargeable zinc-air battery (RZAB) using HT-CoN/C as the air electrode is characterized by a superior peak power density (175 mW cm-2), a prolonged cycle life (1230 cycles/410 h at 5.0 mA cm-2) and a high open-circuit voltage (1.47 V). Meanwhile, the flexible solid-state RZAB assembled by the HT-CoN/C also exhibits a higher peak power density (117 mW cm-2) and an excellent bending performance. This work is extremely valuable for the design and synthesis of Co/N co-doped carbon electrocatalysts.

Abstract:Fe-N-C catalysts are considered to be the most promising non-precious metal based catalysts for oxygen reduction reactions (ORRs), but the low active site density and the insufficient electron transport capability have seriously impeded their applications in fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Herein, we demonstrate polyhedral Fe/Cu-N-C particles chained by in-site grown carbon nanotubes (CNTs) serving as robust electrocatalysts for Zn-air battery (ZAB) applications. Benefiting from highly exposed polyhedral active sites and FeCu induced in-site grown CNT channels as well as Fe, Cu bimetallic synergistic optimization of adsorption/desorption energy, the engineered Fe/Cu-N-C electrocatalyst exhibits outstanding oxygen reduction performance. The ultrahigh activity of the Fe/Cu-N x catalytic centers is attributed to not only the high content of pyridinic and graphitic N, but also the enhanced electron density around Fe atom center. Both primary and rechargeable ZABs are assembled and tested. The results show that the Fe/Cu-N-C based ZABs are far superior to the commercial Pt/C based ZABs regarding peak power density, specific capacity, energy density and cycling stability.

Abstract:Developing an efficient and durable oxygen reduction electrocatalyst is critical for clean-energy technology, such as fuel cells and metal-air batteries. In this study, we developed a facile strategy for the preparation of flexible, porous, and well-dispersed metal-heteroatom-doped carbon nanofibers by direct carbonization of electrospun Zn/Co-ZIFs/PAN nanofibers (Zn/Co-ZIFs/PAN). The obtained Zn/Co and N co-doped porous carbon nanofibers carbonized at 800 °C (Zn/Co-N@PCNFs-800) presented a good flexibility, a continuous porous structure, and a superior oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalytic activity to that of commercial 20 wt% Pt/C, in terms of its onset potential (0.98 V vs. RHE), half-wave potential (0.89 V vs. RHE), and limiting current density (- 5.26 mA cm-2). In addition, we tested the suitability and durability of Zn/Co-N@PCNFs-800 as the oxygen cathode for a rechargeable Zn-air battery. The prepared Zn-air batteries exhibited a higher power density (83.5 mW cm-2), a higher specific capacity (640.3 mAh g-1), an excellent reversibility, and a better cycling life than the commercial 20 wt% Pt/C + RuO2 catalysts. This design strategy of flexible porous non-precious metal-doped ORR electrocatalysts obtained from electrospun ZIFs/polymer nanofibers could be extended to fabricate other novel, stable, and easy-to-use multi-functional electrocatalysts for clean-energy technology.

Abstract:The development of efficient and cost-effective electrocatalysts to overcome the intrinsic sluggish kinetics of the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in zinc-air batteries is crucial. In this study, we introduce a strategy that integrates a template-assisted synthesis with subsequent thermal treatment to fabricate an active and stable cobalt-based nitrogen-doped carbon electrocatalyst, denoted as Co- N -CNT. The strategy adjusts the disordered architecture of the zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) through the synergistic effect of bimetallic species, restricted the growth of zeolitic imidazolate framework nanoleaves (ZIF-L) using salt templates, and directed the transformation from a two-dimensional blade-like morphology to a three-dimensional multi-tiered composite structure. Notably, the Co- N -CNT-800 sample, synthesized at an optimized pyrolysis temperature of 800 °C, exhibits a half-wave potential of 0.89 V and demonstrates stability with sustained cycling over 21 h, which is comparable to the performance of commercial Pt/C electrocatalysts. Moreover, when employed as the cathode in zinc-air batteries, Co- N -CNT-800 not only surpasses Pt/C in terms of power density but also exhibits long-term charge/discharge stability. This findings offer a viable pathway for the design of active and cost-effective ORR electrocatalysts, holding promise for applications in the electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems.
