Abstract:On-demand thermal management based on the Peltier effect of thermoelectric (TE) materials has attracted great attention due to its unique advantages of a simple structure, no moving parts, quietness, compactness, and precise temperature control. However, conventional bulk TE materials are inherently rigid, and it is therefore difficult to acquire close contact with heat sources and heat sinks with complex geometries, resulting in poor heat transfer and cooling ability. In addition, they are optically opaque and dense, blocking passive heat dissipation by thermal radiation and air convection. Tailoring TE materials with mid-infrared (IR) transparency and good flexibility to achieve both active and passive cooling remains a great challenge. Here, we report a nanoporous TE hybrid composed of (000<i>l</i>)-textured n-type Bi2Te3 nanocrystals anchored on a single-wall carbon nanotube (SWCNT) network. It achieves an in-plane power factor of ∼265 μW m–1 K–2 and a low thermal conductivity of ∼0.34 W m–1 K–1, yielding a TE figure of merit (<i>ZT</i>) value of ∼0.23 in the temperature range from room temperature to ∼373 K. This hybrid has excellent flexibility and a maximum IR transparency of ∼16%. Our results open a way to develop efficient TEs with both active and passive cooling abilities. The Supporting Information is available free of charge at <a class="ext-link" href="/doi/10.1021/acsaelm.0c00617?goto=supporting-info">https://pubs.acs.org/doi/10.1021/acsaelm.0c00617</a>.(Note 1) Determination of the preferred orientation; (Note 2) microstructural characterization of the hybrid film; (Note 3) analysis of TE properties of the hybrid film; (Note 4) analysis of thermal conductivity of the hybrid film; (Note 5) calculation of the active cooling heat flux; (Table S1) calculated orientation factors <i>F</i>x of the hybrids with different Bi2Te3/SWCNT volume ratios; (Table S2) carrier concentration (<i>n</i>), carrier mobility (μ), and conductivity (σ) of hybrids with different Bi2Te3/SWCNT volume ratios at 300 K; (Table S3) active cooling flux, passive cooling flux, and their contributions to the total cooling flux of the hybrids with different Bi2Te3/SWCNT volume ratios; (Figure S1) EDS of the hybrid with a Bi2Te3/SWCNT volume ratio of ∼18; (Figure S2) lab-made apparatus for the bending flexibility test at different radii; (Figure S3) X-ray diffraction patterns of the hybrids with different Bi2Te3/SWCNT volume ratios of 1.5, 3, 4.5, 7.5, 10.5, 13.5, and 18; (Figure S4) TEM images of the Bi2Te3/SWCNT hybrid; (Figure S5) SEM images of the Bi2Te3/SWCNT hybrids; (Figure S6) TE properties of the hybrid films with Bi2Te3/SWCNT volume ratios of 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5, 7.5, 10.5, 13.5, and 18; (Figure S7) temperature-dependent Seebeck coefficients of the hybrids with Bi2Te3/SWCNT volume ratios of 7.5, 10.5, 13.5, and 18; (Figure S8) in-plane electrical conductivity, Seebeck coefficients, and thermal conductivity; (Figure S9) thermal conductivity of the hybrid film with a Bi2Te3/SWCNT volume ratio of 18; (Figure S10) lab-made femtosecond laser nano–micro cutting system; (Figure S11) IR transmittance of hybrid films with Bi2Te3/SWCNT volume ratios of 0, 1.5, 3, 4.5, 7.5, 10.5, 13.5, 18, 45, and 60 in the wavelength range of ∼2.5 to ∼5 μm; (Figure S12) reproducibility of the time-dependent IR radiation cooling test of the hybrids (<a class="ext-link" href="/doi/suppl/10.1021/acsaelm.0c00617/suppl_file/el0c00617_si_001.pdf">PDF</a>)This article has not yet been cited by other publications.
