Abstract:Scaffolds for bone tissue engineering require considerable mechanical strength to repair damaged bone defects. In this study, we designed and developed mechanically competent composite shape memory triphasic bone scaffolds using fused filament fabrication (FFF) three dimensional (3D) printing. Wollastonite particles (WP) were incorporated into the poly lactic acid (PLA)/polycaprolactone (PCL) matrix as a reinforcing agent (up to 40 wt%) to harness osteoconductive and load-bearing properties from the 3D printed scaffolds. PCL as a minor phase (20 wt%) was added to enhance the toughening effect and induce the shape memory effect in the triphasic composite scaffolds. The 3D-printed composite scaffolds were studied for morphological, thermal, and mechanical properties, in vitro degradation, biocompatibility, and shape memory behaviour. The composite scaffold had interconnected pores of 550 μm, porosity of more than 50%, and appreciable compressive strength (∼50 MPa), which was over 90% greater than that of the pristine PLA scaffolds. The flexural strength was improved by 140% for 40 wt% of WP loading. The inclusion of WP did not affect the thermal property of the scaffolds; however, the inclusion of PCL reduced the thermal stability. An accelerated in vitro degradation was observed for WP incorporated composite scaffolds compared to pristine PLA scaffolds. The inclusion of WP improved the hydrophilic property of the scaffolds, and the result was significant for 40 wt% WP incorporated composite scaffolds having a water contact angle of 49.61°. The triphasic scaffold exhibited excellent shape recovery properties with a shape recovery ratio of ∼84%. These scaffolds were studied for their protein adsorption, cell proliferation, and bone mineralization potential. The incorporation of WP reduced the protein adsorption capacity of the composite scaffolds. The scaffold did not leach any toxic substance and demonstrated good cell viability, indicating its biocompatibility and growth-promoting behavior. The osteogenic potential of the WP incorporated scaffolds was observed in MC3T3-E1 cells, revealing early mineralization in pre-osteoblast cells cultured in different WP incorporated composite scaffolds. These results suggest that 3D-printed WP reinforced PLA/PCL composite bioactive scaffolds are promising for load bearing bone defect repair.

Abstract:Abstract 4D printing has great potential for fabricating patient-specific and stimuli responsive 3D structures for the medical sector. This paper conducts a systematic research about mechanical behavior based on 4D printing bilayer helical structure. The anisotropic characteristics of mechanical and shape memory performances induced by different infill strategies via both experimental and theoretical methods are investigated. In the proposed method, the bilayer structure is fabricated by three-dimension printing and heated in the water bath for a period of time, and then the deformed structure is obtained. The influence of printing temperature and angle on the storage modulus of shape memory materials (SMP) is explored by dynamic mechanical analyzer (DMA). The influence of environmental temperature and angle on the stress-strain curve of polylactic acid test (PLA) is explored by stretching machine. Deformation recovery tests were performed on the helical structure by pre-editing, and 3D convertible structures with programmable Poisson’s ratios were fabricated to demonstrate. The effects of process parameters on the elastic modulus, storage modulus and shape memory behavior were verified.
Mechanical properties and shape memory effect of 3D-printed PLA-based porous scaffolds

Abstract:In the present work polylactide (PLA)/15wt% hydroxyapatite (HA) porous scaffolds with pre-modeled structure were obtained by 3D-printing by fused filament fabrication. Composite filament was obtained by extrusion. Mechanical properties, structural characteristics and shape memory effect (SME) were studied. Direct heating was used for activation of SME. The average pore size and porosity of the scaffolds were 700μm and 30vol%, respectively. Dispersed particles of HA acted as nucleation centers during the ordering of PLA molecular chains and formed an additional rigid fixed phase that reduced molecular mobility, which led to a shift of the onset of recovery stress growth from 53 to 57°C. A more rapid development of stresses was observed for PLA/HA composites with the maximum recovery stress of 3.0MPa at 70°C. Ceramic particles inhibited the growth of cracks during compression-heating-compression cycles when porous PLA/HA 3D-scaffolds recovered their initial shape. Shape recovery at the last cycle was about 96%. SME during heating may have resulted in "self-healing" of scaffold by narrowing the cracks. PLA/HA 3D-scaffolds were found to withstand up to three compression-heating-compression cycles without delamination. It was shown that PLA/15%HA porous scaffolds obtained by 3D-printing with shape recovery of 98% may be used as self-fitting implant for small bone defect replacement owing to SME.

Abstract:Preparation of biological scaffolds with complex shapes and controllable internal structures is a significant development direction for the tissue engineering field. Due to its simplicity, low-cost and cost-effectiveness, fused deposition molding (FDM) is one of the most popular 3D printing technologies. In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol/polylactic acid/hydroxyapatite composites were fabricated successfully. On this basis, composite scaffolds with different pore structures were designed and constructed by using FDM technology. The material structure was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and dynamic thermomechanical analyzer. The results showed that the cross-sectional morphology of the system presented a "sea-island" structure. The introduction of PLA and HA significantly increased the modulus of the material, which was beneficial to achieve its FDM processing. The compressibility, mineralization behavior, and biocompatibility of the viscoelastic characteristics to natural cartilage subjected to the condition of filling angle of 45° was systemically invesitgated. Notably, the concentrations of Ca2+ and PO43− in simulated body fluid were reduced by 34.7% and 58.2% on 8th day, indicating a good bone formation and mineralization ability, which was further corroborated by SEM and fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results. Biotoxicity test showed that the scaffold presented excellent biocompatibility.

Abstract:This study explores the shape-morphing behavior of 4D-printed structures made from Polylactic Acid (PLA), a prominent bio-sourced shape-memory polymer. Focusing on the response of these structures to thermal stimuli, this research investigates how various printing parameters influence their morphing capabilities. The experimental approach integrates design and slicing, printing using fused deposition modeling (FDM), and a post-printing activation phase in a controlled laboratory environment. This process aims to replicate the external stimuli that induce shape morphing, highlighting the dynamic potential of 4D printing. Utilizing Taguchi's Design of Experiments (DoE), this study examines the effects of printing speed, layer height, layer width, nozzle temperature, bed temperature, and activation temperature on the morphing behavior. The analysis includes precise measurements of deformation parameters, providing a comprehensive understanding of the morphing process. Regression models demonstrate strong correlations with observed data, suggesting their effectiveness in predicting responses based on control parameters. Additionally, finite element analysis (FEA) modeling successfully predicts the performance of these structures, validating its application as a design tool in 4D printing. This research contributes to the understanding of 4D printing dynamics and offers insights for optimizing printing processes to harness the full potential of shape-morphing materials. It sets a foundation for future research, particularly in exploring the relationship between printing parameters and the functional capabilities of 4D-printed structures.

Abstract:Scaffold is one of the key components for tissue engineering application. Three-dimensional (3D) printing has given a new avenue to the scaffolds design to closely mimic the real tissue. However, material selection has always been a challenge in adopting 3D printing for scaffolds fabrication, especially for hard tissue. The fused filament fabrication technique is one of the economical 3D printing technology available today, which can efficiently fabricate scaffolds with its key features. In the present study, a hybrid polymer-ceramic scaffold has been prepared by combining the benefit of synthetic biodegradable poly (lactic acid) (PLA) and osteoconductive calcium sulphate (CaS), to harness the advantage of both materials. Composite PLA filament with maximum ceramic loading of 40 wt% was investigated for its printability and subsequently scaffolds were 3D printed. The composite filament was extruded at a temperature of 160 °C at a constant speed with an average diameter of 1.66 ± 0.34 mm. PLA-CaS scaffold with ceramic content of 10%, 20%, and 40% was 3D printed with square pore geometry. The developed scaffolds were characterized for their thermal stability, mechanical, morphological, and geometrical accuracy. The mechanical strength was improved by 29% at 20 wt% of CaS. The porosity was found to be 50–60% with an average pore size of 550 μm with well-interconnected pores. The effect of CaS particles on the degradation behaviour of scaffolds was also assessed over an incubation period of 28 days. The CaS particles acted as porogen and improved the surface chemistry for future cellular activity, while accelerating the degradation rate.

Abstract:This study was conducted on different models of biodegradable SMP (shape-memory polymer) scaffolds. A comparison was conducted utilizing a basic FDM (fused deposition modeling)/MEX (material extrusion) printer with a standard printing technique and a novel, modified, four-axis printing method with a PLA (poly lactic acid) polymer as the printing material. This way of making the 4D-printed BVS (biodegradable vascular stent) made it possible to achieve high-quality surfaces due to the difference in printing directions and improved mechanical properties-tensile testing showed a doubling in the elongation at break when using the four-axis-printed specimen compared to the regular printing, of 8.15 mm and 3.92 mm, respectfully. Furthermore, the supports created using this method exhibited a significant level of shape recovery following thermomechanical programming. In order to test the shape-memory effect, after the thermomechanical programming, two approaches were applied: one approach was to heat up the specimen after unloading it inside temperature chamber, and the other was to heat it in a warm bath. Both approaches led to an average recovery of the original height of 99.7%, while the in-chamber recovery time was longer (120 s) than the warm-bath recovery (~3 s) due to the more direct specimen heating in the latter case. This shows that 4D printing using the newly proposed four-axis printing is an effective, promising technique that can be used in the future to make biodegradable structures from SMP.

Abstract:Journal of Biomaterials Applications, Ahead of Print. 3D printing has recently emerged as an innovative fabrication method to construct critical-sized and patient-specific bone scaffolds. The ability to control the bulk geometry of scaffolds in both macro and micro-scales distinguishes this technology from other fabrication methods. In this study, bone tissue-specific scaffolds with different pore geometries were printed from polylactic acid (PLA) filaments at three given infill densities ranging from 20 to 30%. A hybrid hydrogel made of synthetic biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) and collagen was applied to coat 3D printed well-structured triangular samples with 30% infill density. The coating process changed the surface texture, increased the average strand diameter and average pore size, and decreased the open porosity of samples, all of which increased the mechanical strength of biomimetic-coated scaffolds. According to matrix mineralization staining and osteo-related gene expression, the coating of scaffolds significantly facilitates metabolic activity and osteogenic differentiation of dental pulp-derived mesenchymal stem cells (DPSCs). Taken together, these results indicated that the biomimetic coating is a highly promising approach that could be taken into consideration in the design of a porous scaffold for bone tissue engineering.

Abstract:Conventional implants tend to have significant limitations, as they are one-size-fits-all, require monitoring, and have the potential for immune rejection. However, 4D Printing presents a method to manufacture highly personalized, shape-changing, minimally invasive biomedical implants. Shape memory polymers (SMPs) with a glass transition temperature (Tg) between room and body temperature (20-38 °C) are particularly desirable for this purpose, as they can be deformed to a temporary shape before implantation, then undergo a shape change within the body. Commonly used SMPs possess either an undesirable Tg or lack the biocompatibility or mechanical properties necessary to match soft biological tissues. In this work, Poly(glycerol dodecanoate) acrylate (PGDA) with engineered pores is introduced to solve these issues. Pores are induced by porogen leaching, where microparticles are mixed with the printing ink and then are dissolved in water after 3D printing, creating a hierarchically porous texture to improve biological activity. With this method, highly complex shapes were printed, including overhanging structures, tilted structures, and a "3DBenchy". The porous SMP has a Tg of 35.6 °C and a Young's Modulus between 0.31 and 1.22 MPa, comparable to soft tissues. A one-way shape memory effect (SME) with shape fixity and recovery ratios exceeding 98 % was also demonstrated. Cultured cells had a survival rate exceeding 90 %, demonstrating cytocompatibility. This novel method creates hierarchically porous shape memory scaffolds with an optimal Tg for reducing the invasiveness of implantation and allows for precise control over elastic modulus, porosity, structure, and transition temperature.

Abstract:Recently, tissue engineering has been revolutionised by the development of 3D-printed scaffolds, which allow one to construct a precise architecture with tailored properties. In this study, three different composite materials were synthesised using a combination of polylactic acid (PLA), polyhydroxyalkanoates (PHA), poly(3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and hydroxyapatite (HA) in varying weight percentages. Morphological properties were evaluated by scanning electron microscopy showing a uniform distribution of HA particles throughout the matrix, indicating good compatibility between the materials. Furthermore, the printed scaffolds were tested under pressure using a load cell to examine mechanical strength. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis showed favorable dispersion, biological compatibility together with enhanced bioactivity within the PHB/PHA/PLA/HA composite matrixes. Thus, this paper demonstrates the successful design and implementation of these composite structures for tissue-engineering applications and highlights the effective development of biocompatible scaffold designs with improved functionality.

Abstract:4D printing adds time as the fourth dimension to 3D printing, which has been actively explored in the biomedical field to develop patient-specific implants due to the ease of manufacturing complex architectures and the capability of dynamic transformations. However, the 4D printing filament used for fused deposition modeling (FDM) is quite limited. Here, 4D printing shape memory polybutylene succinate/polylactic acid (PBS/PLA) composite filament is prepared. The mechanical properties, surface morphology, and shape memory performances of the printed specimens are investigated. Besides, graphene oxide functionalized PBS/PLA shows attractive photothermal properties under near-infrared (NIR) irradiation, and a dynamic, remote, and accurate controlled 4D transformation of a porous scaffold is exhibited. As the first demonstration of 4D printing filament of PBS/PLA for FDM, this work shows its promising application prospects in tissue engineering, photothermal therapy, etc. Additionally, NIR-triggered 4D transformation solves the problem that the conventional thermal-trigger transformation process is difficult to control.

Abstract:The shape memory behavior of smart materials is widely used for stimulation or shape-shifting purposes. Shape memory polymers (SMPs) can shape and force recoveries accompanied by attractive attributes such as biocompatibility, biodegradability, and universality. In this paper, a thermoplastic elastomer (TPE) is used as a complementary material for 4D printed polylactic acid (PLA) structures to enhance their shape and force recovery properties and lower the stimulation temperature for more practical implementations. Two approaches are followed to provide SMP composites (SMPCs): multi-layered and multi-material lattices. In multi-layered lattices, specimens are comprised of separate layers and different ratios of SMP and TPE materials. For comparison, PLA-TPE filaments with the same ratios of multi-layered lattices are produced and used to fabricate multi-material lattices. Dynamic mechanical thermal analysis tests showed a reduction in the glass transition temperature of the manufactured PLA-TPE filament. X-ray diffraction test was conducted to prove that the crystallinity of the developed PLA-TPE material increases which explains the better shape memory effect in the multi-material specimens. Phase separation occurred in low ratios of TPE in PLA, discernible in field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) images, resultting in low quality in one of the developed PLA-TPE filaments. FESEM images also showed proper miscibility of TPE in PLA in higher ratios. Thermomechanical tests were done on printed specimens to examine and compare the shape and force recovery of the produced SMPCs. While the shape recovery of multi-material samples was not as good as multi-layered samples, both approaches have better shape recovery results than the PLA sample. Due to a lower glass transition temperature in multi-material lattices, their shape recovery process started at lower temperatures widening their potential practical applications. Force recovery of multi-material samples revealed a significant improvement which was due to more oriented crystalline polymer structures.

Abstract:Poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) as one of the most well-known biodegradable polyesters has been studied extensively for bone tissue engineering. If being properly programmed, scaffolds from PLLA can also be endowed with the capability of shape memory. However, several noted issues, for example, mechanical brittleness, high glass transition temperature Tg, and relatively poor shape retention and recovery properties, necessitate modification of the PLLA to improve its application efficacy in physiological conditions. This study is proposed to modify PLLA by having the biodegradable poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) incorporated to form ultrafine composite fibers (i.e., PLLA-PHBV) through electrospinning. Different pairs of PLLA-PHBV at the varying mass ratios of 10:0, 9:1, 8:2, 7:3, 6:4, and 0:10 can be successfully electrospun into fibrous form with the fineness of 2-3 μm. Incorporation of PHBV enables to give rise to desired Tg decreases and also, interestingly, increases in the Young's modulus of the PLLA-PHBV blends, while gradually increasing the PHBV mass ratios up to 30%. The PLLA-PHBV (7:3) formulation is identified to present excellent shape memory properties with high shape fixing ratio (>98%) and shape recovery ratio (>96%) compared to the unmodified PLLA fiber counterpart. Moreover, the PLLA-PHBV (7:3) fibers also show enhanced osteogenesis-inducing ability in the mouse bone mesenchymal stem cells, even under nonosteoinductive conditions. Collectively, for the first time this study demonstrates the enhanced shape memory and osteogenesis capabilities of the electrospun PLLA-PHBV composite fibers, and the researched PLLA-PHBV (7:3) fiber system could be potentially applied as a multifunctional scaffolding material for applications in bone tissue repair and regeneration. Impact statement By first converting the poly(l-lactide) (PLLA)-poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) hybrids into fibrous form at varied mass ratios followed by a thorough characterization, we reasonably demonstrated that incorporation of an appropriate amount of PHBV (i.e., 30%) into the PLLA fibers could give rise to significant improvement on the shape memory capability of the PLLA, along with the desired decreases in the transition temperature (Tg). Moreover, the fibrous PLLA-PHBV (7:3) scaffold was also found to significantly promote the osteogenic commitment in bone mesenchymal stem cells with osteoinductive factors in a synergistic manner. Our biomimicking and shape memory enabled fibrous scaffold of PLLA-PHBV could be used to construct multifunctional three-dimensional scaffold with shape memory effect for bone regeneration.

Abstract:Shape memory polymers (SMPs) are a promising class of materials for biomedical applications due to their favorable mechanical properties, fast response, and good biocompatibility. However, it is difficult to achieve controllable sequential shape change for most SMPs due to their high deformation temperature and the simplex deformation process. Herein, shape memory composites based on polylactic acid (PLA) matrix and semi-crystalline linear polymer polycaprolactone (PCL) are fabricated using 4D printing technology. Compared with pure PLA, with the rise of PCL content, the 4D-printed PLA/PCL composites show decreased glass transition temperature (Tg) from 67.2 to 55.2 °C. Through the precise control of the deformation condition, controllable sequential deformation with an outstanding shape memory effect can be achieved for the PLA/PCL shape memory composites. The response time of shape recovery is less than 1.2 s, and the shape fixation/recovery rates are above 92%. In order to simulate sequential petal opening and sequential drug releasing effects, a double-layer bionic flower and a drug release device, respectively, are presented by assembling PLA/PCL samples with different PLA/PCL ratios. The results indicate the potential applications of 4D-printed PLA/PCL composites in the field of bio-inspired robotics and biomedical devices.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Current additive manufacturing technologies wherein as-printed simple two-dimensional (2D) structures morph into complex tissue mimetic three-dimensional (3D) shapes are limited to multi-material hydrogel systems, which necessitates multiple fabrication steps and specific materials. This work utilizes a single shape memory thermoplastic polymer (SMP), PLMC (polylactide- co -trimethylene carbonate), to achieve programmable shape deformation through anisotropic design and infill angles encoded during 3D printing. The shape changes were first computationally predicted through finite element analysis (FEA) simulations and then experimentally validated through quantitative correlation. Rectangular 2D sheets could self-roll into complete hollow tubes of specific diameters (ranging from ≈6 mm to ≈10 mm) and lengths (as long as 40 mm), as quantitatively predicted from FEA simulations within one minute at relatively lower temperatures (≈80 °C). Furthermore, shape memory properties were demonstrated post-shape change to exhibit dual shape morphing at temperatures close to physiological levels. The tubes (retained as the permanent shape) were deformed into flat sheets (temporary shape), seeded with endothelial cells (at T < T g ), and thereafter triggered at ≈37 °C back into tubes (permanent shape), utilizing the shape memory properties to yield bioresorbable tubes with cellularized lumens for potential use as vascular grafts with improved long-term patency. Additionally, out-of-plane bending and twisting deformation were demonstrated in complex structures by careful control of infill angles that can unprecedently expand the scope of cellularized biomimetic 3D shapes. This work demonstrates the potential of the combination of shape morphing and SMP behaviors at physiological temperatures to yield next-generation smart implants with precise control over dimensions for tissue repair and regeneration.

4D Printing of shape-memory polymeric scaffolds for adaptive biomedical implantation

Abstract:4D printing has shown great potential in a variety of biomedical applications due to the adaptability and minimal invasiveness of fabricated devices. However, commonly employed shape memory polymers (SMPs) possess undesirable transition temperatures (Ttranss), leading to complications in implantation operations. Herein, we demonstrate 4D printing of a new SMP named poly(glycerol dodecanoate) acrylate (PGDA) with a Ttrans in a range of 20 °C - 37 °C making it appropriate for shape programming at room temperature and then shape deployment within the human body. In addition, the material possesses suitable rheological properties to allow for the fabrication of a variety of delicate 3D structures such as "triangular star", "six-petal flower", "honeycomb", "tube", tilted "truncated hollow cones", as well as overhanging "bridge", "cage", and "mesh". The printed 3D structures show shape memory properties including a large fixity ratio of 100% at 20 °C, a large recovery ratio of 98% at 37 °C, a stable cyclability of > 100 times, and a fast recovery speed of 0.4 s at 37 °C. Moreover, the Young's moduli of the printed structures can be decreased by 5 times due to the phase transition of PGDA, which is compatible with biological tissues. Finally, in vitro stenting and in vivo vascular grafting demonstrated the geometrical and mechanical adaptivity of the printed constructs for biomedical implantation. This newly developed PGDA SMP based 4D printing technology has the potential to pave a new route to the fabrication of shape memory scaffolds for personalized biomedical applications.
Physicochemical Properties of 3D-Printed Polylactic Acid/Hydroxyapatite Scaffolds

Abstract:The reconstruction or regeneration of damaged bone tissue is one of the challenges of orthopedic surgery and tissue engineering. Among all strategies investigated, additive manufacturing by fused deposition modeling (3D-FDM printing) opens the possibility to obtain patient-specific scaffolds with controlled architectures. The present work evaluates in depth 3D direct printing, avoiding the need for a pre-fabricated filament, to obtain bone-related scaffolds from direct mixtures of polylactic acid (PLA) and hydroxyapatite (HA). For it, a systematic physicochemical characterization (SEM-EDS, FT-Raman, XRD, micro-CT and nanoindentation) was performed, using different PLA/HA ratios and percentages of infill. Results prove the versatility of this methodology with an efficient HA incorporation in the 3D-printed scaffolds up to 13 wt.% of the total mass and a uniform distribution of the HA particles in the scaffold at the macro level, both longitudinal and cross sections. Moreover, an exponential distribution of the HA particles from the surface toward the interior of the biocomposite cord (micro level), within the first 80 μm (10% of the entire cord diameter), is also confirmed, providing the scaffold with surface roughness and higher bioavailability. In relation to the pores, they can range in size from 250 to 850 μm and can represent a percentage, in relation to the total volume of the scaffold, from 24% up to 76%. The mechanical properties indicate an increase in Young's modulus with the HA content of up to ~50%, compared to the scaffolds without HA. Finally, the in vitro evaluation confirms MG63 cell proliferation on the 3D-printed PLA/HA scaffolds after up to 21 days of incubation.

Abstract:Abstract 3D printing has emerged as one of the most promising tools to overcome the processing and morphological limitations of traditional tissue engineering scaffold design. However, there is a need for improved minimally invasive, void-filling materials to provide mechanical support, biocompatibility, and surface erosion characteristics to ensure consistent tissue support during the healing process. Herein, soft, elastomeric aliphatic polycarbonate-based materials were designed to undergo photopolymerization into supportive soft tissue engineering scaffolds. The 4D nature of the printed scaffolds is manifested in their shape memory properties, which allows them to fill model soft tissue voids without deforming the surrounding material. In vivo, adipocyte lobules were found to infiltrate the surface-eroding scaffold within 2 months, and neovascularization was observed over the same time. Notably, reduced collagen capsule thickness indicates that these scaffolds are highly promising for adipose tissue engineering and repair.

Abstract:In the present day and age, increasing demand concerning the enhancement of the mechanical performance of Shape Memory Polymer (SMP) based structures has paved the way for developing newer metastructures of enhanced load-bearing, damping capacity, and durability. The present study focuses on developing SMP-based metastructures made of commercially available Polylactic Acid (PLA) and 30% by wt. of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) blended PLA. The designed metastructures are initially analyzed using numerical modeling to prevent lateral deformation, acute stress concentration zones, and row-wise collapse. Mechanical tests reveal that blending TPU with PLA enhances the material's flexibility and ductility, further improving the toughness and fracture resistance of the built metastructures. Loading-unloading and shape recovery tests (under compression mode) of the s-shape metastructure reveal that the PLA/TPU metastructure withstands ≅ 170 N load, less than neat PLA's ≅ 223 N due to TPU's flexibility. PLA/TPU endures 30 cycles, while PLA fails after the 9th cycle. In shape recovery plots, PLA/TPU metastructures exhibit a lower standard deviation (~0.32%) than PLA (~1.4%), attributed to the entropy decrease and cross-linkage disentanglements of PLA. Furthermore, a Dynamic Mechanical Analyzer (DMA) assesses glass transition temperature, energy storage capability, and dissipation in variation with the temperature. The nephograms of ABAQUS result divulge accurate fracture initiation locations of the metastructure unit cells, which involves implementing ductile damage behavior modeling by employing damage initiation and evolution parameters. Finally, assessing compression tests and shape recovery behavior results elucidates that these SMP-based metastructures are promising for load-bearing pallets in the transporting and packaging industries, providing superior damping and self-repairing capabilities during significant plastic deformations.
