Abstract:The efficient separation of palladium, one of the precious metals, is one of the most challenging works that have not been solved. Based on soft-ligand multi-nitrogen organic agents, a new triazine-containing hybrid functional silica-adsorbent, BisDiOTP@SiO2, was prepared and characterized. The uptake of more than ten representative metals towards BisDiOTP@SiO2 was investigated in the wide range of 0.4-5.0 M HNO3. The high uptake ability and excellent selectivity of Pd(II) towards BisDiOTP@SiO2 were indicated. The enrichment and removal of Pd(II) by batch experiments through six cycles of uptake and desorption were conducted. The separation efficiency was 99.3% for Pd(II), 5.9% for Co(II) and less than 0.2% for all others. Pd(II) was separated effectively from others. A new technical process entitled SPMP (Simultaneous Partitioning of MA(III)/Pd(H) by Extraction Chromatography) for Pall) separation along with minor actinides has been developed.

Abstract:A novel mesoporous polymer-based composite, C7-BTBP/XAD-7, was prepared by impregnating 6,6’-bis(5,6-diheptyl-1,2,4-triazin-3-yl)-2,2’-bipyridine (C7-BTBP) into the pores of the polymeric XAD-7 carrier. The microstructure of the material was characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), nitrogen adsorption-desorption isotherms, and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The selective adsorption of Pd(II) onto C7-BTBP/XAD-7 from a HNO3 medium containing some typical metals, including Ru(III), Fe(III), Mo(VI), Zr(IV), Li(I), Na(I), K(I), Rb(I), Cs(I), Mg(II), Ca(II), Sr(II), Ba(II), Y(III), La(III), Nd(III), and Yb(III), was investigated. The polymeric composite exhibited strong adsorption affinity, high selectivity, and fast adsorption rate for Pd(II) in 3.0 M HNO3. The adsorption isotherm fitted well with Langmuir model, with a maximum adsorption capacity of 0.412 mmol/g. The hybrid polymeric composite was very stable in HNO3 solution. The kinetics of Pd(II) coordinated with C7-BTBP was discussed by Density Function Theory (DFT) calculations.

Abstract:The synthesis and characterization of two novel symmetric triazine-ring opening ligands CA-MP (pyridine derivative)/CA-BOPhen (1,10-phenanthroline derivative) functionalized SiO2-P (P = Polymer) adsorbents for separation of Pd(II) from HNO3 solutions are presented. SEM, N2 adsorption/desorption isotherms, TGA and EDS spectroscopy characterization results showed that CA-MP and CA-BOPhen were successfully introduced into the pores of SiO2-P carrier via physical intermolecular interactions. CA-MP@SiO2-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO2-P show high efficiency, high selectivity, extremely fast adsorption rates towards Pd(II) over 19 typical fission or corrosion products in HNO3 solution. The distribution coefficient Kd values of CA-MP@SiO2-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO2-P are up to 206.5 and 205.7 cm3/g, respectively, within 10-15 min of contact time in 0.4 M HNO3. The adsorption capacities of them to Pd(II) were determined to be 0.36 mmol/g and 0.23 mmol/g, respectively. The fast adsorption rates and high selectivity of two adsorbents towards Pd(II) were related to the formation of the highly preorganized complex [Pd(NO3)(L)]+ (L = CA-MP or CA-BOPhen). These results demonstrate that CA-MP@SiO2-P and CA-BOPhen@SiO2-P possess great potential for highly efficient removal of Pd(II) from highly active liquid waste (HLW).
Preparation and Characterization of a Novel Macroporous Silica-Bipyridine Asymmetric Multidentate Functional Adsorbent and Its Application for Heavy Metal Palladium Removal.

Abstract:The effective removal of heavy metal 107Pd(II) from highly active liquid waste (HLW) is very valuable for reducing its hazardous and risk to public health and environment. For this purpose, a novel silica-bipyridine multidentate functional adsorbent was synthesized by vacuum infusing a new asymmetric N-donor ligand CA-MTBP (bipyridine derivative) into the macroporous SiO2-P support. SEM, N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms, TGA, XRD, FT-IR, 29Si solid-state NMR and XPS spectroscopy were utilized to systematically characterize the physicochemical properties of the adsorbent. The characterization results indicated that CA-MTBP was successfully immobilized onto the pores of SiO2-P by intermolecular interaction. Strong hydrogen-bonding interactions identified by single crystal structure of the ligand and 29Si NMR may play a key role in achieving this immobilization. TGA and TOC studies showed that CA-MTBP/SiO2-P had excellent thermal stability and highly HNO3 resistance. EDS and XPS investigations provided directly evidences for Pd(II) being selectively adsorbed onto the adsorbent. The adsorbent had excellent adsorption capability, fast adsorption kinetics and high selectivity for Pd(II) over other typical tested metals in HNO3 media.

Abstract:To separate Pd(II), a macroporous silica-based soft-ligand 2,6-bis(5,6-di(iso-butyl)-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl)pyridine (BDIBTP) material, BDIBTP/SiO2-P, was synthesized by vacuum treatment. It was a multidentate chelating composite prepared by impregnation and immobilization of BDIBTP and 1-octanol molecules into the pores of the macroporous SiO2-P particles with a mean diameter of 50 mu m. 1-Octanol was used to modify BDIBTP through intermolecular interaction force. The adsorption of some typical fission products Zr(IV), Pd(II), La(III), Y(III), Ru(III), Rh(III), and Mo(VI) contained in highly active liquid waste (HLW) onto the BDIBTP/ SiO2-P materials was investigated. It was carried out by examining the effects of contact time and the concentration of HNO3 in the range of 0.3M7.0M. BDIBTP/SiO2-P showed excellent adsorption ability and high selectivity for Pd(II) over all of the tested metals. It was ascribed to the effective complexation of Pd(II) with BDIBTP/SiO2-P. Consideration of the complexation of BDIBTP for minor actinides MAs(III), the possibility and feasibility of effective partitioning of Pd(II) and MAs(III) simultaneously from a simulated HLW were discussed. A new concept process entitled MPS for the MA(III) and Pd(II) Separation has been proposed.
Minor Actinides Partitioning: Uptake of Palladium with Triazine-Containing Adsorbent under the Framework of Spmp Process

The strong uptake ability and selectivity of BisDiOTP@SiO2P for Pd(II) was indicated by six cycles of the batch uptake and desorption. The removal efficiency was always more than 99.2% for Pd(II) and less than 0.15% for others. In light of the results of batch experiments, the removal of Pd(II) from a simulated 1.0 M HNO3 was performed using BisDiOTP@SiO2P as a stationary phase by extraction chromatography. Pd(II) adsorbed by BisDiOTP@SiO2P was effectively desorbed with 0.2 M thiourea. An efficient removal of Pd(II) by BisDiOTP@SiO2P was achieved. Some valuable data in chemical separation engineering of Pd(II) under the framework of SPMP process were obtained. It is promising to simultaneous removal of Pd(II) and MAs(III) from highly active liquid waste by the SPMP process developed.

Abstract:A polycrown loaded silica composite material named Polycrown/SiO2-P was firstly prepared by impregnating and immobilizing polycrown into porous silica and was characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), and Fourier transformed infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, nitrogen adsorption and desorption isotherms. Polycrown/SiO2-P was tested with regard to adsorption performance. Interestingly, Polycrown/SiO2-P preferred Pd(II) than alkali metals, alkaline-earth metals and actinides. Pd(II) adsorption with Polycrown/SiO2-P as functions of HNO3 concentration, contact time, initial Pd(II) concentration, temperature were thus investigated. The results showed the optimal adsorption acidity was determined as 5.0 M nitric acid, proving good acidity-resistant. Pseudo-second-order kinetics model fitted adsorption well indicating chemical adsorption. The isotherm adsorption equilibrium was well described by Langmuir isotherm model with maximum adsorption capacity of 14.30 mg/g. Pd(II) adsorption increased with temperature increased. The positive ΔH° and ΔS°, and the negative ΔG° indicated the adsorption was endothermic, entropy increase and spontaneous in nature. Pd(II) loaded Polycrown/SiO2-P was characterized by XPS. Further, the adsorption efficiency of recovered Polycrown/SiO2-P retained up ~93.7% after five ad-desorption cycles. Polycrown/SiO2-P was promising to separate Pd(II) from highly acid medium.
Highly Selective Adsorption of New Bis-Opened-Triazine Materials Hybridized with a Cross-Linked Polymer Support for Palladium and Some Typical Coexisting Metals

Abstract:A novel polymer hybrid bis-opened-triazine adsorbent, BOTZX, was prepared by impregnation and immobilization. It was achieved through the in situ introduction of a new monopyridine-derived bis-opened-triazine ligand, BOTZ, into the pores of the cross-linked inert polymer carrier under vacuum hybridization. The adsorption of 20 representative metals on BOTZX was studied over the ranges of 0.4 to 6.0 M HNO3 and 298 to 318 K. BOTZX had strong uptake ability and high selectivity for Pd over others except for Zr. The removal efficiency was more than 99.8% for Pd and less than 0.11% for others, except for Zr at 31.5%. The Pd adsorption capacity was 0.228 mmol/g under the optimal conditions of 1.0 M HNO3 and a contact time of 30 min at 298 K. The experimental data fit the Langmuir model well, reflecting the monolayer uptake mechanism. Thermodynamic parameters Delta H degrees, Delta G degrees, and Delta S degrees and valuable chemical engineering data of Pd adsorption were obtained. It is promising to apply BOTZX in the simultaneous removal of Pd and minor actinide from highly active liquid waste in the framework of the SPMP process.
Separation of Pd and Pt from highly acidic leach liquor of spent automobile catalysts with monothio-Cyanex 272 and trioctylamine

Abstract:Platinum group metals (PGMs), especially Pd, Pt, and Rh, have drawn great attention due to their unique features. Direct separation of Pd and Pt from highly acidic automobile catalyst leach liquors is disturbed by various factors. This work investigates the effect of various parameters including the acidity, extractant concentration, phase ratio A/O, and diluents on the Pd and Pt extraction and their stripping behaviors. The results show that the Pd and Pt are successfully separated from simulated leach liquor of spent automobile catalysts with monothio-Cyanex 272 and trioctylamine (TOA). Monothio-Cyanex 272 shows strong extractability and specific selectivity for Pd, and only one single stage is needed to recover more than 99.9% of Pd, leaving behind all the Pt, Rh, and base metals of Fe, Mg, Ce, Ni, Cu, and Co in the raffinate. The loaded Pd is efficiently stripped by acidic thiourea solutions. TOA shows strong extractability for Pt and Fe at acidity of 6 mol·L −1 HCl. More than 99.9% of Pt and all of the Fe are extracted into the organic phase after two stages of countercurrent extraction. Diluted HCl easily scrubs the loaded base metals (Fe, Cu, and Co). The loaded Pt is efficiently stripped by 1.0 mol·L −1 thiourea and 0.05–0.1 mol·L −1 NaOH solutions. Monothio-Cyanex 272 and TOA can realize the separation of Pd and Pt from highly acidic leach liquor of spent automobile catalysts.

Abstract:The adsorption characteristics of platinum(IV) and palladium(II) from aqueous solutions onto the ethylenediamine-modified magnetic chitosan nanoparticles (EMCN) have been investigated. The magnetic chitosan nanoparticles were prepared by adding the basic precipitant of NaOH solution into a W/O microemulsion system. The transmission electron microscope showed that the diameter of EMCN was from 15 to 40 nm. The adsorption experiments indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity occurred at around pH 2.0 for both Pt(IV) and Pd(II). Due to the small diameter and the high surface reactivity, the adsorption equilibrium of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) onto the EMCN reached very quickly. The maximum loading capacity of EMCN for Pt(IV) and Pd(II) was determined to be 171 and 138 mg/g, respectively. Sorption isotherms were determined both in single component with pure metal solutions and bicomponent systems with different Pd/Pt mass ratios. The results showed that the sorbents had a greater affinity for Pt(IV) than for Pd(II). The total sorption capacity was comparable to that of each metal individually, indicating that the metals compete for the same sorption sites. It was found that 0.4 M HNO(3)-1.0 M thiourea solution provided effectiveness of the desorption of Pt(IV) and Pd(II) from EMCN, while 5 M ammonia exhibited the highest selectivity for the tested metal ions.
Enrichment and activation of cyano in cobalt hexacyanoferrate for specific recovery of ultra-low concentrations of platinum

Abstract:Adsorption recovery of ultra-low concentrations (1 ppm) of platinum (Pt) was challenging due to the inferior sensitivity response and poor specific affinity between sorbents and target ions. Herein, enrichment and activation of the cyano group (CN) on cobalt hexacyanoferrate (CoHCF) were achieved by crystal facets engineering to capture Pt(II) efficiently and specifically. The Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density-functional theory (DFT) calculations results revealed that the activity and density of CN on the (2 2 0) facets were higher than that on the (2 0 0) facet. The Pt(II) adsorption efficiency on the CN-enriched and -activated CoHCF (CoHCF (2 2 0) ) reached 92.5%, which was 1.56 times higher than that on the original CoHCF (59.2%). The specific adsorption of Pt(II) was driven by the coordination interaction between Fe-CN– and Pt, leading to the Pt(II)-Pd(II) separation efficiency attained 98.95% within 20 min. In addition, CoHCF (2 2 0) equipped with Pt(II) could be further chemically reduced as a photocatalyst for hydrogen evolution. This study suggested an attractive strategy for the practical recovery of Pt(II) and comprehensive utilization of ultra-low concentration Pt-containing wastewater.

Abstract:Separation of palladium from high level liquid waste (HLLW) not only manages the dispose of HLLW, but could also aid in overcoming the shortage of palladium resources. Herein, three novel adsorbents, namely, 2-mercaptobenzimidazole (MBI)/XAD7HP, 2-mercaptobenzothiazole (MBT)/XAD7HP, 2-mercaptobenzoxazole (MBO)/XAD7HP were prepared by vacuum impregnation method using Amberlite XAD7HP resin (XAD7HP) as the carrier for the selective separation of Pd(II) from simulated HLLW. SEM-EDS (Scanning Electron Microscopy), BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) and PXRD (Powder X-ray diffraction) analysis showed that the ligands were successfully impregnated into the carrier. The saturated adsorption capacities of MBI/XAD7HP, MBT/XAD7HP, MBO/XAD7HP in 0.5 M HNO 3 were 126.2 mg Pd/g, 137.6 mg Pd/g, 98.4 mg Pd/g, respectively, and excellent adsorption and separation performance towards Pd(II) ( SF Pd/other metals > 500 and K d > 10 4 mL/g from 0.1 to 4 M HNO 3 ) were also achieved. The adsorption kinetics and adsorption isotherms for Pd(II) matched well with pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption for Pd(II) by three adsorbents were monolayer chemical adsorption. The adsorption mechanism was analyzed by FT-IR, XPS combined with DFT calculation. The extremely high selectivity of three adsorbents towards Pd(II) among 15 metal ions is due to the soft N and S donor atoms at ligands which have good affinity for Pd(II) in HNO 3 solution. As MBT/XAD7HP exhibited the best adsorption and separation properties, it is supposed to have more application potential for the separation of Pd(II) from HLLW.

Abstract:A new kind of silica-based adsorbent with high selectivity and efficient adsorption for palladium ion (Pd(II)) was synthesized in this study. A macrocyclic polyether isomer was modified for incorporation to the silica matrix as a ligand to realize the complexation between Pd(II) and the adsorbent. The adsorption of Pd(II) in HNO3 media was evaluated by both batch and column operations. Influences including acidity, contact time, initial metal concentration and elution conditions were detailed. From a practical viewpoint, the functionalized adsorbent was employed for the recovery of Pd(II) from the simulated high level liquid waste (HLLW) containing a large amount of interferences. Superior selectivity to Pd(II) as well as a recovery rate higher than 90% was obtained. A mechanism concerning the formation of complex ion-pair was proposed for the description of the Pd(II)-binding process. The macrocyclic ligand functionalized silica adsorbent possesses potential for the recovery of the palladium resource in radioactive liquid waste.
Efficient capture of Pd by multidentate S/N-containing group modified materials: An important piece of puzzle for electron transfer ratio ligand design

Abstract:How to quantitatively describe metal–ligand interactions is the key to design high-affinity ligand. In this study, the electron transfer ratio (ETR), which correlated 34 chemical ligands with the electron donating ability, allowed for obtaining six high affinity multidentate S/N-containing ligands, and the interactions were further analyzed by frontier orbital and electrostatic potential calculation. Furthermore, six corresponding ligand-modified polystyrene framework materials were prepared by efficient derivatization of isothiocyanates and primary amines. The optimal material CMPS-BD had an adsorption capacity up to 4.07 mmol/g with good tolerance to different organic solvents. CMPS-BD exhibited excellent adsorption efficiency in combination with kinetics, thermodynamics, selectivity and regeneration performance. Moreover, the remarkable practicability was achieved as the removal rate reached 99.8 %, and the residual Pd 2+ concentrations were reduced to less than 5 mg/L in three kinds of Pd-catalytic reaction waste liquids. Through mechanism analysis, 1 mmol ligand FA ∼ BD could bind 0.75 ∼ 1.74 mmol Pd 2+ which was consistent with the ETR tendency, certifying the accuracy and efficiency of this method. Intensive DFT calculations revealed that the optimal ligand BD could generate a variety of spontaneous endothermic intermolecular and intramolecular coordination reactions.

Targeting of platinum capture under 1+1 aqua regia using robust and recyclable polymeric polyamine resin: Adsorption performance and mechanism

Abstract:The targeted capture of platinum from complex and harsh acidic digests such as those platinum-containing secondary resources is essential from the perspectives of green development. Here, a polyamine chelating resin (CMPs-PEI) with excellent selectivity and acid resistance was prepared by a nucleophilic substitution reaction using chloromethylated polystyrene as the parent and polyethyleneimine as the modifier. The experimental results revealed that the adsorbent showed excellent adsorption effect on platinum under different acidities, and its maximum adsorption capacity was up to 337 mg/g at pH 2. More impressively, a rather high capacity of 162.41 mg/g was achieved in 1 + 1 aqua regia (pH -0.7), which was much higher than other adsorbent materials under the same conditions. In addition, the recovery of platinum by CMPs-PEI in practical platinum-containing iron concentrate abatement solution was 100 %. Mechanistic studies showed that the protonated amine groups on CMPs-PEI bound PtCl62- and partially reduced PtCl42- by electrostatic attraction. Meanwhile, the excellent regeneration performance of CMPs-PEI indicated that it showed great potential for green and economic recovery of precious metal ions.

Abstract:Dialkylsulfide is considered as the most promising extractant for separating Pd(II) and Pt(IV) in industrial processes. However, the slow kinetics for Pd(II) extraction limits its extensive application. The development of new extractants with faster kinetics, high extraction efficiency, and exceptional Pd(II) separation selectivity has been a persisting goal over the past few decades. In this study, a new functionalized extractant, 1-methyl-2-(nonylthio)-1H-imidazole (MNI) containing both N and S atoms, was synthesized and employed to separate Pd(II) from mixed hydrochloric acid solutions with different initial Pd(II)/Pt(IV) concentration ratios. Experimental results revealed that MNI not only has a high selectivity for Pd(II) over Pt(IV) but also has faster kinetics for Pd(II) extraction than diisopentylsulfide (S201) under similar extraction conditions. In contrast to traditional dialkylsulfide extractants, MNI coordinates with Pd(II) ions via the N(5) atom in its imidazole ring to form Pd(MNI) 2 Cl 2 complexes, instead of using the S atom as with dialkylsulfide. The extraction mechanism involving the coordination between Pd(II) and MNI was demonstrated using the slope analysis method and ultraviolet (UV), Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR), 1 H NMR, and 13 C NMR spectroscopic methods. The fast extraction kinetics between MNI and Pd(II) was possibly attributed to the high charge density of the N(5) atom in the imidazole ring, whereas the outstanding separation selectivity for Pd(II) was due to the strong affinity of the N(5) atom. The facile synthesis, high saturation capacity, excellent Pd(II) selectivity, and remarkable reusability endow MNI with potential applications in Pd(II) recovery from leach solutions of waste automotive catalysts and other secondary resources.

Abstract:Palladium (Pd) in high level liquid waste (HLLW) is a valuable alternative resource besides its natural reserves. On the other hand, the presence of Pd has extremely negative impacts on the vitrification process of HLLW. To separate Pd from HLLW, a novel silica-based adsorbent named HEMAP/SiO 2 -P was designed and prepared by using 2-hydroxyethyl-2-methyl-2-propenoate phosphate as the functional group donor, dichloromethane as the diluent and styrene-divinylbenzene modified silica particle as the carrier. The experimental results reveal that HEMAP/SiO 2 -P possesses excellent adsorption selectivity ( SF Pd/other metals > 183.2) and large adsorption capacity (393.4 mg/g) towards Pd in 1 M HNO 3 solution. Moreover, column experiments show that the adsorbent can effectively separate Pd from other coexisting metal ions in simulated HLLW with the recovery yield of 99.4%. The experimental and characterization analyses as well as DFT calculations confirm that the adsorption mechanism involves ion exchange between Pd(II) and H + (in P-OH) accompanied by the transfer of charge.

Abstract:Magnetic carboxymethyl chitosan (MCMCS) nanoadsorbent was prepared for adsorption of palladium and platinum. Chitosan was first carboxymethylated and then grafted on the surface of Fe3O4 nanoparticles through carbodiimide activation. The results showed that MCMCS had the diameter of about 20 nm, the mass content of Fe3O4 of 36%, and the saturation magnetization of 25.74 × 10-3 A · m2 · g-1. The main adsorption mechanism was the electrostatic attraction of protonated amine groups and Pd(Pt)-Cl anionic complexes at pH 2. The saturated adsorption capacity was 3.2 mmol · g-1 for Pd and 2.7 mmol · g-1 for Pt, respectively. The competition adsorption between Pd and Pt was observed, Pd and Pt competed for the same adsorption active sites, and the affinity of MCMCS for Pd was greater than that for Pt. The desorption efficiency of more than 68% for both Pd and Pt was achieved using 0.5 mol · L-1 thiourea as eluant, while the highest selectivity was observed with 5 mol · L-1 ammonia.

Abstract:Aminophosphonic acid functionalized silica synthesized by chemical grafting method was utilized as the sorbent for separation of platinum (Pt)and palladium (Pd) from aqueous solution.The effects of pH,contact time,initial metal concentration, ionic strength and solid-liquid ratio on the sorption of Pt and Pd by functionalized silica were investigated.The sorption capacity is strongly dependent on pH but independent on the ionic strength and solid-liquid ratio.The sorption process fits the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir isotherm very well.Equilibrium sorption capacities of 18.5 mg/g for Pt at pH=2 and 29.9 mg/g for Pd at pH=6 are achieved respectively. The distinct sorption behavior of functionalized silica for Pt and Pd with pH can be used for separation of these two metal ions in aqueous solution.The sorbed Pt or Pd can be completely eluted using 6% sulfourea in 5 mL 0.1 mol/L HNO3 .The synthesized sor-bent material can be recycled and reused.
