Abstract:Abstract The nano-precipitates and nanotwins enable to improve the mechanical performance of NiCo-based alloys. In this work, the molecular dynamics (MD) simulations are performed to investigate the strengthening mechanisms of nanotwinned medium-entropy NiCoCr alloys with various distributions and volume fractions of nano-precipitates. MD simulations reveal that mechanical performance for the precipitates located in twin boundaries is better than that located in the twin lamellae. The precipitate-induced strengthening makes the nanotwinned NiCoCr alloys to achieve the maximum flow stress during increasing the precipitate volume fraction. The influences of volume fraction and distribution of the precipitate on winding and cutting mechanisms are analyzed comprehensively. The dislocation winding behavior, hindered twin boundaries deformation, and the adjacent precipitates connection control the precipitate strengthening mechanisms. A dislocation-based theoretical model is developed to forecast the size-dependent flow stress of nanotwinned metals with nano-precipitates, in which the Orowan bypass mechanism and the dislocation pile-up behaviors are involved. The relationship between the microstructural size and the flow stress of nanotwinned metallic materials with nano-precipitates are explored. The predictions for the flow stresses varied with the precipitate volume fraction are agreeable well with the results of MD simulation. The predicted maximum flow stresses and the corresponding critical volume fractions of nano-precipitates are sensitive to the microstructural sizes.

Abstract:Catalyst design plays vital roles in structurally relevant reactions. Revealing the catalyst structure and chemistry in the reactive environment at the atomic scale is imperative for the rational design of catalysts as well as the investigation of reaction mechanisms, while in situ characterization at the atomic scale at high temperature is still a great challenge. Here, tracking intermetallic Co7W6 nanocrystals with a defined structure and a high melting point by environmental aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy in combination with in situ synchrotron X-ray absorption spectroscopy, we directly present the structural and chemical stability of the Co7W6 nanocrystals in methane, carbon monoxide, and hydrogen at temperatures of 700-1100 °C. The evidence is in situ and in real time with both atomic scaled resolution and collective information. The results are helpful in revealing the mechanism of structural-specified synthesis of single-walled carbon nanotubes. This research offers an example of systematic investigation at the atomic scale on catalysts under reactive conditions. Such catalysts presenting high structural stability may also find applications in other structure-specific synthesis.
Refining Micron-Sized Grains to Nanoscale in Ni-Co Based Superalloy by Quasistatical Compressive Deformation at High Temperature

Abstract:Compressive deformation was carried out in an Ni-Co-based superalloy with relatively low stacking fault energy (SFE) at 725 °C and a strain rate of 10−2 s−1; the underlying micromechanisms were investigated under true compression strains varying from 0.1 to 1.0. It was found that dislocation slipping accompanied by stacking fault (SF) shearing dominated the compressive deformation under the strain of 0.1 and 0.2. As the strain increased to 0.3 and 0.4, microtwinning was activated and then interacted with dislocations, leading to the formation of dislocation tangles or blocky distorted region. When true strain was further increased to 0.6, abundant subgains (SGs) with polygonous shape appeared and then transformed into nanograins as true strain increased to 1.0. It is demonstrated that high strain and microtwinning are the prerequisites for the evolution of nanograins in the deformed Ni-Co-based superalloy. High strain can produce plentiful dislocations and distorted micro-sized SGs; then the microtwins sheared these distorted regions and refined the micro-sized SGs into nanoscale, which subsequently transformed into nanograins with further deformation.
High throughput experiment assisted discovery of new Ni-base superalloys

Abstract:In this work, a diffusion multiple consist of Ni-base superalloys with complex compositions rather than simple metals or compounds is introduce, to discover the new Ni-base polycrystalline superalloys in combination with high strength and microstructure stability. Additionally, machine learning based image recognition has been use to characterize the microstructure, especially the γ′ precipitates. The microhardness is also utilized to rank the mechanical properties of Ni-base superalloys with different compositions. Thus, the composition, microstructure, and property are integrated by the high throughput experiment to discover novel superalloys, which can also be applied to discover other alloys with complex chemical components.

Abstract:Recent research has focused on the development of disk superalloys with better temperature capability and mechanical properties via a new alloying concept that uses high levels of Co and γ′ formers of Al, Ti, Ta and Nb to produce composite precipitation strengthening. In this work, alloying effects of Nb and Ta on phase stability, microstructure and property of a novel Ni-Co-based superalloy were systematically investigated using the high-throughput multi-component diffusion multiples (MCDMs) in combination with various high-throughput measurement tools. A deep learning-based image recognition method was developed to efficiently extract the γ′ morphological features, including area fraction, particle size, number density. The rapid characterizations of alloy compositions, microstructure and Vickers hardness (HV) enable us to establish the composition-dependent microstructural characteristics and mechanical property as well as their correlation with the phase stability, which can be directly applied for designing Ni-Co-based superalloys with superior microstructure stability and strength.

Abstract:The discovery of a stable γ/γ' microstructure in Co-Al-W-based alloys brought forth possibilities for Co-based superalloys as potential alternatives to Ni-based superalloys in high temperature applications. To date, only a few γ′-strengthened Co-based superalloys with good comprehensive performance have been reported due to the limited knowledge of alloying effects, mainly limited by the "trial and error" approach. In the present work, an accelerated framework integrating a multicomponent diffusion-multiple and machine learning was developed to efficiently and systematically study the effects of alloying elements, e.g. Ni, Al, W, Ti, Ta, Cr, Mo and Nb on the microstructures including phase equilibrium, γ′ volume fraction, γ′ size and γ′ morphology of multicomponent CoNi-based superalloys with high Cr content. The multicomponent diffusion-multiple enabled the collection of a large amount of experimental data relating composition and microstructural parameters, while machine learning enabled the exploration of alloying effects on the microstructural stability and parameters in the compositional space. To validate the efficacy of this approach, two multicomponent CoNi-based superalloys with high Cr addition were designed to possess a γ/γ' two-phase microstructure of relatively high γ' volume fraction, low γ' coarsening rate, with one having a spherical and the other cuboidal γ' morphology. This framework and the insight obtained in this study will be helpful to accelerate the development and application of multicomponent CoNi-based superalloys with high Cr content for engineering applications.

Abstract:<p>Synchrotron X-ray microtomography and ptychography were used to characterize the 3D network structure, morphology and distribution of metal carbides in an as-cast IN713LC Ni superalloy. MC typed carbides were found to distribute mainly on the grain boundary between the matrix γ and γ' phase. The differences in solidification cooling rate had a minor influence on the volume fraction of the MC type carbides, but significantly affected the carbide size, distribution and network morphology. Depending on the local composition of the remaining liquid phase and geometric constraints, the carbides can form either spherical or strip or network morphologies. The research demonstrated clearly the advantage and technical potential of using the two complementary tomography techniques synergistically to characterize non-destructively complex multiple-phase structures in three dimensional space with a spatial resolution of ~30 nm.</p>

Abstract:In order to illustrate how atomistic modeling is being used to determine the structure, physical, and chemical properties of materials at the nanoscale, we present here the results of molecular dynamics (MD) simulations on nanoscale assemblies of such materials as carbon nanotubes, diamond surfaces, metal alloy nanowires, and ceramics. We also include here the results of nonequilibrium MD simulations on the nanorheology of a monolayer of wear inhibitor self-assembled on two metal oxide surfaces, separated by hexadecane lubricant, and subjected to steady state shear. We also present recent developments in force fields (FF) required to describe bond breaking and phase transformations in such systems. We apply these to study of plasticity in metal alloy nanowires where we find that depending on the strain rate, the wire may deform plastically (forming twins), neck and fracture, or transition to the amorphous phase.
High-throughput assessment of the microstructural stability of segregation-engineered nanocrystalline Al-Ni-Y alloys

Abstract:Segregation engineering has emerged as a promising pathway towards designing thermally stable nanocrystalline alloys with enhanced mechanical properties. However, the compositional and processing space for solute stabilized microstructures is vast, thus the application of high-throughput techniques to accelerate optimal material development is increasingly attractive. In this work, combinatorial synthesis is combined with high-throughput characterization techniques to explore microstructural transitions through annealing of a nanocrystalline ternary Al-base alloy containing a transition metal (TM=Ni) and rare earth dopant (RE=Y). A down-selected optimal composition with the highest thermal stability is annealed through in situ transmission electron microscopy, revealing that the removal of the RE species is correlated to a reduction in the microstructural stability at high temperatures as a result of variations in intermetallic phase formation. Results demonstrate the benefits of co-segregation for enhancing mechanical hardness and delaying the onset of microstructural instability.

Abstract:Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) has been widely utilized in the field of materials science due to its significant advantages, such as large depth of field, wide field of view, and excellent stereoscopic imaging. However, at high magnification, the limited imaging range in SEM cannot cover all the possible inhomogeneous microstructures. In this research, we propose a novel approach for generating high-resolution SEM images across multiple scales, enabling a single image to capture physical dimensions at the centimeter level while preserving submicron-level details. We adopted the SEM imaging on the AlCoCrFeNi2.1 eutectic high entropy alloy (EHEA) as an example. SEM videos and image stitching are combined to fulfill this goal, and the video-extracted low-definition (LD) images are clarified by a well-trained denoising model. Furthermore, we segment the macroscopic image of the EHEA, and area of various microstructures are distinguished. Combining the segmentation results and hardness experiments, we found that the hardness is positively correlated with the content of body-centered cubic (BCC) phase, negatively correlated with the lamella width, and the relationship with the proportion of lamellar structures was not significant. Our work provides a feasible solution to generate macroscopic images based on SEMs for further analysis of the correlations between the microstructures and spatial distribution, and can be widely applied to other types of microscope.

Abstract:This study developed a new high-throughput strategy, designated as hot-isostatic-pressing-based micro-synthesis approach (HIP-MSA), to optimize high-performance nickel-based superalloys in a rapid, efficient, and cost-effective manner. A specific honeycomb-array structure containing 106 discrete cells was designed and optimized using finite element analysis (FEA) and then applied to create a combinatorial library consisting of 106 Ni-based superalloys with various Co, Nb and Ta concentrations. By integration with high-throughput characterization tools, extensive composition and phase structure data were collected quickly and efficiently. In the superalloys with higher amounts of Nb and Ta, the detrimental η phase displaying needle-like morphology was observed, and its content (wt%) increased drastically with Ta and Nb contents increasing. However, the increase of Co addition in those alloys was confirmed to be surprisingly beneficial by significantly suppressing the formation of η phase that was induced by high Nb and Ta contents. The zero-phase-fraction (ZPF) line of η phase was established, which is critical to design superalloy chemistry for superior microstructural stability at high-temperature service conditions.Graphical abstract

Abstract:This work proposes a novel high throughput–based strategy for designing high‐temperature alloys. Compared with recent data‐driven methods for material design, this strategy exhibits high accuracy and efficiency because of the high‐throughput multicomponent diffusion couples, self‐developed atomic mobility database, and refined physical models and can efficiently accelerate the development of multicomponent high‐performance alloys and tackle challenges in discovering novel materials. Ever‐increasing demands for superior alloys with improved high‐temperature service properties require accurate design of their composition. However, conventional approaches to screen the properties of alloys such as creep resistance and microstructural stability cost a lot of time and resources. This work therefore proposes a novel high throughput–based design strategy for high‐temperature alloys to accelerate their composition selections, by taking Ni‐based superalloys as an example. A numerical inverse method is used to massively calculate the multielement diffusion coefficients based on an accurate atomic mobility database. These coefficients are subsequently employed to refine the physical models for tuning the creep rates and structural stability of alloys, followed by unsupervised machine learning to categorize their composition and determine the range of the composition with optimal performance. By using a strict screening criterion, two sets of composition with comprehensively optimal properties are selected, which is then validated by experiments. Compared with recent data‐driven methods for materials design, this strategy exhibits high accuracy and efficiency attributed to the high‐throughput multicomponent diffusion couples, self‐developed atomic mobility database, and refined physical models. Since this strategy is independent of the alloy composition, it can efficiently accelerate the development of multicomponent high‐performance alloys and tackle challenges in discovering novel materials.

Abstract:Establishing relationship of elemental composition and mechanical property is a tremendous amount of work in superalloys. Here, machine learning coupled with high-throughput experiment is adopted to construct "composition-hardness" model in nickel-based superalloys. The hardness estimated from experiment agrees well with the predicted value. Furthermore, optimal composition of high-hardness superalloys is accurately predicted by simulated annealing algorithm. Subsequently, optimal composition is validated by Thermo-Calc software, further demonstrating the effectiveness of current approach. Here, a design strategy combined with high-throughput experiment and machine learning is proposed, which may be believed for accelerating the design of advanced materials with excellent performance.

Abstract:Nickel-based single crystal (SX) superalloys are the key materials of turbine blades in aircrafts, that the microstructure evolution during high temperature creep has critical effects on the thermo-mechanical properties. Research on microstructure evolution and establishing the quantitative relationship between microstructure evolution and creep conditions are of great significance for service safety assessment of nickel-based SX superalloys. High generation nickel-based SX superalloys generally have high cost on account of precision casting and the addition of Re and Ru which are rare and precious metals. Hence, it is necessary to develop a rapid characterization and analysis approach in terms of microstructure features of nickel-based SX superalloys. In this study, we integrated high-throughput experiment, large-scale high-resolution characterization and high-throughput quantitative analysis techniques to establish an efficient method for investigating the microstructure evolution of nickel-based SX superalloys during high temperature creep. The high temperature interrupted creep tests were carried out on the variable section specimens with arc surface to acquire the microstructures which are changed with creep stress continuously. High-resolution SEM with ALTLAS module was employed to quickly characterize the large-scale microstructure throughout the universal stress scale. Based on U-Net deep learning algorithm, an automatic dendrite identification model was established to segment the dendrite region quickly and accurately. And then, the γ/γ' microstructure parameters of dendrite region were continuously quantitated using a logical algorithm. The quantitative correlation between microstructure evolution and creep conditions of nickel-based SX superalloys could be established, which shows tremendous potential and significance in the service safety assessment of nickel-based SX superalloys.

Abstract:Nanostructured materials are being actively developed, while it remains an open question how to rapidly scale them up to bulk engineering materials for broad industrial applications. This study propose an industrial approach to rapidly fabricate high-strength large-size nanostructured metal matrix composites and attempts to investigate and optimize the deposition process and strengthening mechanism. Here, advanced nanocrystalline aluminum matrix composites (nanoAMCs) were assembled for the first time by a novel nano-additive manufacturing method that was guided by numerical simulations (i.e., the in-flight particle model and the porefree deposition model). The present nanoAMC with a mean grain size <50 nm in matrix exhibited hardness 8 times higher than the bulk aluminum and shows the highest hardness among all Al-Al2O3 composites reported to date in the literature, which are the outcome of controlling multiscale strengthening mechanisms from tailoring solution atoms, dislocations, grain boundaries, precipitates, and externally introduced reinforcing particles. The present high-throughput strategy and method can be extended to design and architect advanced coatings or bulk materials in a highly efficient (synthesizing a nanostructured bulk with dimensions of 50 × 20 × 4 mm3 in 9 min) and highly flexible (regulating the gradient microstructures in bulk) way, which is conducive to industrial production and application.

Abstract:The computational materials design is performed to develop novel single crystal superalloys with balance of multi-objective properties. The entire design process is carried out by materials computation from systems selection to composition determination. The design rules are proposed to optimize compositions of Ni-based single crystal superalloys for materials characteristics, using first-principles calculations, CALPHAD calculations, theoretical models, and machine learning. By first-principles calculations, the effect of alloying elements on structural, elastic, electronic properties of Ni3Al are investigated and the Ni-Al-V-Cr-Nb-Mo-Ta-W-Re systems are determ5ined. Application of theoretical models and CALPHAD calculations allows the large materials exploring space to become narrow, based on materials design criterion: microstructure, density, castability, and processability. The creep resistance of remained alloys is estimated by using machine learning and creep merit index. There are 12 alloys selected from 779,625 composition combinations, reaching the balance of multiple design properties. With comparing to commercial superalloys, the selected alloy has excellent performance in trade-offs between different factors, specifically prominent in the aspect of Cr-Al space of oxidation resistance. This design procedure is expected to reduce excessive consumption of cost and time in the process of trial-and-error testing, providing a guide on developing potential Ni-based superalloys systems.

Abstract:Cu–Cr–Co combinatorial multilayer thin-films were prepared by a high-throughput ion beam sputtering system. Based on the thickness ratio among the individual nanoscale monolayers (Cu, Cr, Co), the resulting stoichiometry covered the entire phase diagram. The chemical composition and structure of Cu–Cr–Co combinatorial chip upon solid-state reaction were studied by lab-based micro-X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) and high-throughput synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. A composition-structure map for Cu–Cr–Co combinatorial chip was developed through automated data analysis employing hierarchical clustering techniques. The structural evolution of Cu–Cr–Co combinatorial chip as a function of heat-treatment temperature, time, and modulation period were studied systematically. Furthermore, the effect of the elemental distribution in-depth direction was investigated to gain more insights regarding phase transformation. Abstract:<p>Knowledge of phase boundaries in multi-component system plays a critical role in exploring the alloy design space effectively and safely, which defines the roadmap to stabilize desirable phases and sidestep detrimental phases. In this work, a novel combinatorial approach was developed to determine the phase boundaries in multi-component nickel-based superalloys. In addition, a three-phase region was pinpointed and expected to enhance high-temperature properties. The results were further analyzed to evaluate the feasibility of CALPHAD and semi-empirical predictions, which provided clues for the improvement of the thermodynamic databases.</p>

An Improved High-Throughput Data Processing Based on Combinatorial Materials Chip Approach for Rapid Construction of Fe-Cr-Ni Composition-Phase Map

Abstract:The combinatorial materials chip approach is vastly superior to the conventional one that characterizes one sample at a time in the efficiency of composition-phase map construction. However, the resolution of its high-throughput characterization and the correct rate of automated composition-phase mapping are often affected by inherent experimental limitations and imperfect automated analyses, respectively. Therefore, effective data preprocessing and refined automated analysis methods are required to automatically process huge amounts of experiment data to score a higher correct rate. In this work, the pixel-by-pixel structural and compositional characterization of the Fe-Cr-Ni combinatorial materials chip annealed at 750 °C was performed by microbeam X-ray at a synchrotron light source and by electron probe microanalysis, respectively. The severe baseline drift and system noise in the X-ray diffraction patterns were successfully eliminated by the three-step automated preprocessing (baseline drift removal, noise elimination, and baseline correction) proposed, which was beneficial to the subsequent quantitative analysis of the patterns. Through the injection of human experience, hierarchy clustering analyses, based on three dissimilarity measures (the cosine, Pearson correlation coefficient, and Jenson-Shannon divergence), were further accelerated by the simplified vectorization of the preprocessed X-ray diffraction patterns. As a result, a correct rate of 91.15% was reached for the whole map built automatically in comparison with the one constructed manually, which confirmed that the present data processing could assist humans to improve and expedite the processing of X-ray diffraction patterns and was feasible for composition-phase mapping. The constructed maps were generally consistent with the corresponding isothermal section of the Fe-Cr-Ni ternary alloy system in the ASM Alloy Phase Diagram Database except the inexistence of the σ phase under insufficient annealing.
