Abstract:Two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) exhibit promising application prospects in the domains of electronic devices, optoelectronic devices and spintronic devices due to their distinctive energy band structures and spin-orbit coupling properties. Cr-based chalcogenides with narrow or even zero bandgap, covering from semiconductors to metallic materials, have considerable potential for wide-band photodetection and two-dimensional magnetism. Currently, the preparation of 2D CrX n (X = S, Se, Te) nanosheets primarily relies on chemical vapor deposition (CVD) and molecule beam epitaxy (MBE), which enable the production of high-quality large-area materials. This review article focuses on recent progress of 2D Cr-based chalcogenides, including unique crystal structure of the CrX n system, phase-controlled synthesis, and heterojunction construction. Furthermore, a detailed introduction of room-temperature ferromagnetism and electrical/optoelectronic properties of 2D CrX n is presented. Ultimately, this paper summarizes the challenges associated with utilizing 2D Cr-based chalcogenides in preparation strategies, optoelectronics devices, and spintronic devices while providing further insights.

Abstract:Exploring new-type 2D magnetic materials with high magnetic transition temperature and robust air stability has attracted wide attention for developing innovative spintronic devices. Recently, intercalation of native metal atoms into the van der Waals gaps of 2D layered transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) has been developed to form 2D non-layered magnetic TMDs, while only succeeded in limited systems (e.g., Cr2 S3 , Cr5 Te8 ). Herein, composition-controllable syntheses of 2D non-layered iron selenide nanosheets (25% Fe-intercalated triclinic Fe5 Se8 and 50% Fe-intercalated monoclinic Fe3 Se4 ) are firstly reported, via a robust chemical vapor deposition strategy. Specifically, the 2D Fe5 Se8 exhibits intrinsic room-temperature ferromagnetic property, which is explained by the change of electron spin states from layered 1T'-FeSe2 to non-layered Fe-intercalated Fe5 Se8 based on density functional theory calculations. In contrast, the ultrathin Fe3 Se4 presents novel metallic features comparable with that of metallic TMDs. This work hereby sheds light on the composition-controllable synthesis and fundamental property exploration of 2D self-intercalation induced novel TMDs compounds, by propelling their application explorations in nanoelectronics and spintronics-related fields.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) iron chalcogenides (FeX, X = S, Se, Te) are emerging as an appealing class of materials for a wide range of research topics, including electronics, spintronics, and catalysis. However, the controlled syntheses and intrinsic property explorations of such fascinating materials still remain daunting challenges, especially for 2D nonlayered Fe7S8 with mixed-valence states and high conductivity. Herein, we design a general and temperature-mediated chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach to synthesize ultrathin and large-domain Fe7S8 nanosheets on mica substrates, with the thickness down to ∼4.4 nm (2 unit-cell). Significantly, we uncover a quadratic-dependent unsaturated magnetoresistance (MR) with out-of-plane anisotropy in 2D Fe7S8, thanks to its ultrahigh crystalline quality and high conductivity (∼2.7 × 105 S m-1 at room temperature and ∼1.7 × 106 S m-1 at 2 K). More interestingly, the CVD-synthesized 2D Fe7S8 nanosheets maintain robust environmental stability for more than 8 months. These results hereby lay solid foundations for synthesizing 2D nonlayered iron chalcogenides with mixed-valence states and exploring fascinating quantum phenomena.

Abstract:2D ferromagnets have garnered considerable attention for their potential applications in spintronics, magnonics, and spin-orbitronics. Chromium tellurides (CrxTey), in particular, have drawn interest due to their exceptional magnetic properties and diverse range of chemical stoichiometries, attributed to the phenomenon of chromium self-intercalation. To provide an in-depth understanding of this complex material class, this review first explains the origin of 2D magnetism using two well-known 2D ferromagnets, CrI3 and Fe3GeTe2, and compares the structures of CrTe2, Cr5Te8, Cr2Te3, and CrTe to clarify the self-intercalation phenomenon. In addition, it summarizes the growth conditions of CrxTey using the chemical vapor deposition approach as well as commonly practiced characterization techniques for 2D ferromagnetism. This review also compares ferromagnetic properties while analyzing how Cr intercalants affect the magnetic. Finally, it suggests that more attention should be focused on this material system to unlock its full practical and academic potential, and proposes directions for future research.
Strain-tunable Ferromagnetism and Chiral Spin Textures in Two-Dimensional Janus Chromium Dichalcogenides

Abstract:Using first-principles calculations and micromagnetic simulations, we systematically investigate the magnetic properties of two-dimensional Janus chromium dichalcogenides (CrXTe, X = S, Se) under strain. We find that the CrSTe monolayer has high Curie temperature (T-c) of 295 K and an out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy. The CrSeTe monolayer has large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) which can host chiral Neel domain wall (DW), and under an external magnetic field, the skyrmion states can be induced. As tensile strain increases, ferromagnetic exchange coupling and perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of Janus CrXTe monolayers both increase significantly, and the magnitude of DMI is reduced, which results in the giant ferromagnetism enhancement. Interestingly, for CrSeTe monolayer, distinct spin textures from chiral DW to uniform ferromagnetic states are induced under tensile strain. Moreover, the diameter and density of skyrmions in CrSeTe can be tuned by the amplitude of external magnetic field and strain. These findings highlight that the Janus CrXTe monolayers as good candidates for spintronic nanodevices.

Abstract:2D magnetic materials have attracted intense attention as ideal platforms for constructing multifunctional electronic and spintronic devices. However, most of the reported 2D magnetic materials are mainly achieved by the mechanical exfoliation route. The direct synthesis of such materials is still rarely reported, especially toward thickness-controlled synthesis down to the 2D limit. Herein, the thickness-tunable synthesis of nanothick rhombohedral Cr2S3 flakes (from approximate to 1.9 nm to tens of nanometers) on a chemically inert mica substrate via a facile chemical vapor deposition route is demonstrated. This is accomplished by an accurate control of the feeding rate of the Cr precursor and the growth temperature. Furthermore, it is revealed that the conduction behavior of the nanothick Cr2S3 is variable with increasing thickness (from 2.6 to 4.8 nm and >7 nm) from p-type to ambipolar and then to n-type. Hereby, this work can shed light on the scalable synthesis, transport, and magnetic properties explorations of 2D magnetic materials.
Anisotropic magnetic properties and tunable conductivity in two-dimensional layered NaCrX2 (X=Te,Se,S) single crystals

Abstract:Monolayer NaCrX2 (X=Te,Se,S) were theoretically proposed to be two-dimensional intrinsic ferromagnetic semiconductors while their physical properties have not been thoroughly investigated in bulk single crystals. We report the single-crystal growth, structural, magnetic and electronic transport properties of NaCr(Te1-xSex)2 (0 6 x 6 1) and NaCrS2. For NaCr(Te1-xSex)2, the strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy of NaCrTe2 can be gradually tuned to be a nearly isotropic one by Se-doping. Meanwhile, a systematic change in the conductivity with increasing x is observed, displaying a doping-induced metal-insulator-like transition. Under magnetic field larger than 30 koe, both NaCrTe2 and NaCrSe2 can be polarized to a ferromagnetic state. While for NaCrS2, robust antiferromagnetism is observed up to 70 kOe and two field-induced metamagnetic transitions are identified along H||ab. These intriguing properties together with the potential to be exfoliated down to few-layer thickness make NaCrX2 (X=Te,Se,S) promising for exploring spintronic applications.

Abstract:This work presents a novel 2D ferromagnetic semiconducting material with an unprecedented Curie temperature (Tc) of 230 K, over four times higher than previous records for 2D magnetic semiconductors. Such a high Tc arises from the synergy between in‐plane and out‐of‐plane superexchange interactions, and puts forward a novel concept of regulating properties in the vertical dimension for 2D materials. 2D magnetic semiconductors exhibit great potential for next‐generation spintronics, but realizing their full capabilities has been hindered by the low Curie temperatures (Tc) below 50 K observed in current materials. Here, a new mechanism to substantially enhance the Tc of 2D semiconducting materials through incorporating both in‐plane and out‐of‐plane superexchange interactions enabled by structural design is demonstrated. Specifically, monolayer Cr2Se3 is synthesized with a five‐layer Se–Cr–Se–Cr–Se atomic structure using molecular beam epitaxy (MBE). This unique structure not only possesses optimized in‐plane superexchange interaction but also incorporates out‐of‐plane Cr–Se–Cr couplings. Scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS) and angular‐resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) confirm its semiconducting nature. Remarkably, the ferromagnetic phase transition observed by ARPES and Magnetic Force Microscopy (MFM) indicated that its Tc is up to 230 K. This not only establishes a new record for Tc in 2D ferromagnetic semiconductor materials but also introduces a novel approach to modulating materials' properties by manipulating the vertical dimension in 2D materials.

Abstract:This review highlights the significance of thickness‐controlled synthesis in non‐Van der Waals self‐intercalated Cr2X3 for exploring tunable magnetism in 2D materials. By manipulating the thickness and lattice size during synthesis, researchers have opened new possibilities for tailoring the magnetic properties of these materials. The review systematically discusses the interplay between synthesis methods, crystal structure variations, and resulting magnetism in Cr2X3 thin films. It provides a comprehensive summary of existing studies, shedding light on the importance of synthesis parameters in understanding the magnetic behavior of these materials. In the search for two‐dimensional (2D) magnets operating under ambient conditions, quasi‐2D non‐van der Waals (vdW) materials have attracted considerable research interest over the last five years. In addition to their high Curie temperature (TC), their superior air stability to that of vdW 2D magnets has made them potential candidates for future room‐temperature spintronics applications. Furthermore, recent progress in the thickness‐dependent crystal lattice and magnetic properties of non‐vdW Cr2X3 (X = S, Se, or Te) has brought them to areas that are once set aside for 2D vdW magnets in fundamental research and applications. Despite covalent bonding between magnetic layers, various bottom‐up synthesis methods produced thickness‐controlled flakes of Cr2X3. Moreover, layer‐dependent structural and magnetic properties are among the novel research directions in these materials. This review systematically summarizes recent studies on Cr2X3 crystal structure, their controllable synthesis, and their respective magnetic properties. A summary of some significant results on thickness‐controlled synthesis in Cr2X3 and thickness‐dependent magnetism in Cr2Te3 is presented. Additionally, experimental and theoretical reports are presented to explain interlayer magnetic interaction. The work reveals the interaction between synthesis, structure, and magnetism. Finally, future research directions of new Cr2X3‐based materials, rich magnetism in Cr2X3, and their potential application are discussed.

Near Degeneracy of Magnetic Phases in Two-Dimensional Chromium Telluride with Enhanced Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy

Abstract:The discovery of atomically thin van der Waals magnets (e.g., CrI3 and Cr2Ge2Te6) has triggered a renaissance in the study of two-dimensional (2D) magnetism. Most of the 2D magnetic compounds discovered so far host only one single magnetic phase unless the system is at a phase boundary. In this work, we report the near degeneracy of magnetic phases in ultrathin chromium telluride (Cr2Te3) layers with strong perpendicular magnetic anisotropy highly desired for stabilizing 2D magnetic order. Single-crystalline Cr2Te3 nanoplates with a trigonal structure (space group P3̅1c) were grown by chemical vapor deposition. The bulk magnetization measurements suggest a ferromagnetic (FM) order with an enhanced perpendicular magnetic anisotropy, as evidenced by a coercive field as large as ∼14 kOe when the field is applied perpendicular to the basal plane of the thin nanoplates. Magneto-optical Kerr effect studies confirm the intrinsic ferromagnetism and characterize the magnetic ordering temperature of individual nanoplates. First-principles density functional theory calculations suggest the near degeneracy of magnetic orderings with a continuously varying canting from the c-axis FM due to their comparable energy scales, explaining the zero-field kink observed in the magnetic hysteresis loops. Abstract:Two-dimensional van der Waals Janus materials and their heterostructures offer fertile platforms for designing fascinating functionalities. Here, by means of systematic first-principles studies on van der Waals Janus monolayer Cr-based dichalcogenide halides CrYX (Y=S, Se, Te; X=Cl, Br, I), we find that CrSX (X=Cl, Br, I) are the very desirable high TC ferromagnetic semiconductors with an out-of-plane magnetization. Excitingly, by the benefit of the large magnetic moments on ligand S2- anions, the sought-after large-gap quantum anomalous Hall effect and sizable valley splitting can be achieved through the magnetic proximity effect in van der Waals heterostructures CrSBr/Bi2Se3/CrSBr and MoTe2/CrSBr, respectively. Additionally, we show that large Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions give rise to skyrmion states in CrTeX (X=Cl, Br, I) under external magnetic fields. Our work reveals that two-dimensional Janus magnet Cr-based dichalcogenide halides have appealing multifunctionalities in the applications of topological electronic and valleytronic devices.

Abstract:The unique optical and electrical properties of two-dimensional (2D) materials provide a platform for novel van der Waals (vdW) heterojunction devices but the investigation of 2D magnetism is still limited. Recently, the emergence of long-range magnetic order atomically thin crystals expands 2D family, providing possibilities for the study of low-dimensional spin behavior and novel spintronics devices. As a specific member of magnetic van der Waals family, chromium trihalides (CrX3, X = Cl, Br, I) stimulated intensive interests on account of the newfangled magnetic properties. In this review, we briefly introduce the crystal structures, magnetism of the bulk and synthetic methods of 2D CrX3. Subsequently, the physical properties in atomically thin limit and magnetism manipulated by external field are presented. Next, some novel physical phenomena in CrX3 heterojunctions are discussed. Finally, the challenges and future directions are proposed. We focus on the intriguing physical phenomena in 2D magnetic CrX3 by combining related theoretical calculations and experimental results, providing a perspective on these emerging materials.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) Cr-based layered and non-layered materials such as CrI3, Cr2Ge2Te6, Cr2S3, CrSe, and CrOX (X = Cl and Br) have attracted considerable attention due to their potential application in spintronics. Despite few experimental studies, theoretical studies reported that 2D chromium dichalcogenide (CrS2) materials show unique properties such as valley polarization, piezoelectric coupling, and phase dependent intrinsic magnetic properties. Here, we report for the first time the synthesis of 2D layered CrS2 flakes down to the monolayer via the chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, its phase structures and electronic properties. We observed the 2H, 1T, and 1T' phases coexisting in CVD grown monolayer CrS2. The formation of 1T' phases from 1T phases is described by dimerization of metal atoms at room temperature according to our molecular dynamics studies. The coexistence of 1T and 1T' phases with 2H phases is referred to as the 1T and 1T' puddling phenomenon. We theoretically showed that the monolayer 2H-CrS2 is a direct bandgap semiconductor with a gap of approximately 0.95 eV predicted by the PBE functional, while the 1T- and 1T'-CrS2 are metallic and semi-metallic with approximately 10 meV gap, respectively. Furthermore, 2H CrS2 exhibits nonmagnetic semiconducting properties while for ferromagnetic spin configuration, the 1T and 1T' CrS2 show magnetic characteristics with 0.531μB and 2.206μB magnetic moment per Cr atom respectively, for ferromagnetic spin configuration as predicted from DFT+U calculation. Importantly, CrS2-based field-effect transistors exhibit a p-type behavior. Our study would stimulate further exploration of 2D layered CrS2 with astonishing properties and open up a whole new avenue for the urgent need for developing multifunctional 2D materials for nanoelectronics, valleytronics, and spintronics.
Composition‐Dependent Magnetic Ordering in Freestanding 2D Non‐van der Waals Cr 2 Te x Se 3− x Crystals

Abstract:A series of air‐stable 2D non‐van der Waals Cr2TexSe3−x (x = 0–3) compounds are designed, which exhibit prominent composition‐dependent magnetic ordering and electronic states. Moreover, they all have favorable energetic/thermodynamic/mechanical stability, superior oxidation resistance, tunable magnetic ground states and bandgaps, and high magnetic transition temperature. Among them, 2D Cr2TeSe2 shows a sizable anomalous Hall conductivity.Since the confirmation of long‐range magnetic ordering in 2D materials, much effort has been devoted to finding more 2D magnetic materials with high Curie temperature (TC) and tunable physical properties. Most of the 2D magnets realized to date are based on van der Waals (vdW) materials, but recently synthesized 2D non‐vdW ultrathin materials have revealed an alternative direction for the discovery of novel 2D magnets. In this paper, a family of 2D non‐vdW Cr2TexSe3−x compounds is proposed. All Cr2TexSe3−x compounds are predicted to be energetically favorable and air stable, suggesting experimental feasibility, and long‐term stability. Compared to other non‐vdW materials, Cr2TexSe3−x compounds have superior oxidation resistance. Moreover, they exhibit obvious composition‐dependent magnetic ordering, which originates from the competition between interlayer direct antiferromagnetic exchange and ferromagnetic superexchange. Among them, half‐metals Cr2Te3 and Cr2TeSe2 exhibit robust ferromagnetism with high TC values of 396 and 261 K, respectively. Additionally, 2D Cr2TeSe2 shows a sizable anomalous Hall conductivity of 6237 Ω cm−1. The present results enrich the database of 2D non‐vdW magnets and provide fundamental understanding about the composition‐induced magnetic phase transition, which may be of use in spintronic applications.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials can be used to construct multifunctional electronic and spintronic devices attributed to their unique 2D restricted magnetic properties. However, some magnetic materials are non-van der Waals materials, and the substrate used in chemical vapor deposition (CVD) is usually a van der Waals substrate like mica. This kind of substrate can cause transfer problems and increase the complexity of equipment fabrication or magnetic measurement. It is meaningful to further optimize the current production process for realizing good repeatability and simple fabrication. Growing materials on SiO2/Si can directly make electronic devices and measure magnetic properties. Herein, we use potassium hydroxide to modify a SiO2/Si substrate and succeed in growing Cr2X3 (X = S, Se, and Te) directly on the SiO2/Si surface by a CVD method. OH– is attached to the surface of SiO2/Si, thereby inhibiting the growth of thin layered Cr2X3 along the [001] zone axis. Through density function theory calculation, it is verified that the formation energy of Cr2S3 and SiO2/Si heterojunction can be enlarged by introducing OH–, which is beneficial to the growth of Cr2X3 on the SiO2/Si surface. At the same time, we have also achieved Cr2S3 and Cr2Se3 with controlled size and thickness. The thinnest thickness of the three materials on SiO2/Si can be close to 1 unit cell. Cr2S3, Cr2Se3, and Cr2Te3 nanosheets exhibit ferrimagnetic, spin glass, and ferromagnetic behavior, respectively. This work can provide a new method for the growth of non-van der Waals 2D materials on SiO2/Si, and it is of great significance to the fabrication of spintronic devices.

Abstract:Two-dimensional (2D) magnetic materials have attracted significant attention for promising applications in energy-saving logic and robust memory devices. However, most 2D magnets discovered so far typically feature drawbacks for practical applications due to low critical temperatures. Herein, we synthesize ultrathin room-temperature (RT) magnetic Fe7Se8 nanoflakes via the space-confined chemical vapor deposition method. It is found that the appropriate supply and control of Se concentration in the reaction chamber is crucial for synthesizing high-quality nonstoichiometric Fe7Se8 nanoflakes. Cryogenic electrical and magnetic characterizations reveal the emergence of spin reorientation at ∼130 K and the survival of long-range magnetic ordering up to room temperature. The RT magnetic domain structures with different thicknesses are also uncovered by magnetic force microscopy. Moreover, theoretical calculations confirm the spin configuration and metallic band structure. The outstanding characteristics exhibited by Fe7Se8 nanoflakes, including RT magnetism, spin reorientation property, and good electrical conductivity, make them a potential candidate for RT spintronics.

Abstract:The field of two dimensional (2D) materials experienced a surge of discoveries after the isolation of graphene. Among these, the transition metal compounds of Molybdenum and tungsten have been the most extensively studied materials after graphene. More recently, their group member chromium has only recently come to the limelight after the discovery of its exciting magnetic properties. As such the body of work surrounding 2D chromium-based materials is growing. Here, we present an up-to-date summary of the chromium 2D materials showing the latest advances in their experimental synthesis, characterization and the applications of 2D Chromium-based compounds. Finally, we conclude with a perspective on the future of 2D chromium-based materials. We believe that this study will be helpful to understand the field of chromium-based 2D compounds.
