Abstract:Natural tissues, such as bone, tendon, and muscle, have well-defined hierarchical structures, which are crucial for their biological and mechanical functions. However, mimicking these structural features still remains a great challenge. In this study, we use ice-templated assembly and UV-initiated cryopolymerization to fabricate a novel kind of composite hydrogel which has both aligned macroporous structure at micrometer scale and a nacre-like layered structure at nanoscale. Such hydrogels are macroporous, are thermoresponsive, and exhibit excellent mechanical performance (they are tough and highly stretchable), attractive properties that have a significant impact on the wide applications of composite hydrogels, especially as tissue-engineering scaffolds. The fabrication method in this study including freeze-casting and cryopolymerization can also be applied to other materials, which makes it promising for designing and developing smart and multifunctional composite hydrogels with hierarchical structures.

Abstract:Extreme environmental conditions often lead to irreversible structural failure and functional degradation in hydrogels, limiting their service life and applicability. Achieving high toughness, self-healing, and ionic conductivity in cryogenic environments is vital to broaden their applications. Herein, we present a novel approach to simultaneously enhance the toughness, self-healing, and ionic conductivity of hydrogels, via inducing non-freezable water within the zwitterionic cellulose-based hydrogel skeleton. This approach enables resulting hydrogel to achieve an exceptional toughness of 10.8 MJ m −3 , rapid self-healing capability (98.9 % in 30 min), and high ionic conductivity (2.9 S m −1 ), even when subjected to −40 °C, superior to the state-of-the-art hydrogels. Mechanism analyses reveal that a significant amount of non-freezable water with robust electrostatic interactions is formed within zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers-modified polyurethane molecular networks, imparting superior freezing tolerance and versatility to the hydrogel. Importantly, this strategy harnesses the non-freezable water molecular state of the zwitterionic cellulose nanofibers network, eliminating the need for additional antifreeze and organic solvents. Furthermore, the dynamic Zn coordination within these supramolecular molecule chains enhances interfacial interactions, thereby promoting rapid subzero self-healing and exceptional mechanical strength. Demonstrating its potential, this hydrogel can be used in smart laminated materials, such as aircraft windshields.

Abstract:Binary solvent-based fabrication permits the conductive organohydrogel to function well at low-temperature environments. However, the deep cryogenic and high temperatures are still threatening the performance of conductive organohydrogels in the application of stretchable electronics, biosensors, and intelligent coatings. Here, a radically new method is developed to introduce propylene and carbonate cellulose nanofibrils into freeze tolerance polymer matrix, and fabricate an antifreezing/antiheating organohydrogel integrated a high mechanical strength (1.6 MPa) and high level of ionic conductivity (4.2 S cm-1) over a wide temperature range (-40 to 100 °C). In this designed system, the propylene carbonate with low freezing point and high boiling point was shown to enhance antifreezing (-40 °C) and antiheating (100 °C) performance of organohydrogel. Furthermore, negative charge-rich cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were served as an ion transport channel and nanoreinforcements to boost the conductive and mechanical properties of the organohydrogel. In particular, Molecular Dynamics (MD) simulations reveal that propylene carbonate with high dielectric constant is capable of generating ion migration-facilitated effects, enabling the high ionic conductivity of organohydrogel. Tapping into these attributes, potential applications in mechanoresponsive smart coating have been demonstrated utilizing the appealing organohydrogel as a paint, rendering unprecedented protection and monitoring performance.

Abstract:Hydrogels based on nanocomposites (NC) structure have acquired a great deal of interest, but they are still limited by relatively low mechanical strength, inevitably losing elasticity when applied below subzero temperatures, due to the formation of ice crystallization. In this study, an anti-freezing and mechanically strong Laponite NC organohydrogel was prepared by a direct solvent replacement strategy of immersing Laponite NC pre-hydrogel into ethylene glycol (EG)/water mixture solution. In the organohydrogel, a part of water molecules was replaced by EG, which inhibited the formation of ice crystallization even at extremely low temperatures. In addition, the formation of hydrogen bonds between Laponite and the monomers of N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) and hydroxyethyl acrylate (HEA) endowed the organohydrogels with high mechanical strength and toughness. The NC organohydrogel can maintain its mechanical flexibility even at −25 °C. The compressive stress, tensile stress, and elongation at the break of N5H5L reached 3871.71 kPa, 137.05 kPa, and 173.39%, respectively, which may be potentially applied as ocean probes in low temperature environment.

Abstract:The use of ion-conductive hydrogels in strain sensors with high mechanical properties, conductivity, and anti-freezing properties is challenging. Here, high-strength, transparent, conductive, and anti-freezing organohydrogels were fabricated through the radical polymerization of polyacrylamide (PAM)/sodium alginate (SA)/TEMPO-oxidized cellulose nanofibrils (TOCNs) in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/water solution, followed by soaking in a CaCl2 solution. The resulting organohydrogels demonstrated a high strength (tensile strength of 1.04 MPa), stretchability (681%), transparency (>84% transmittance), and ionic conductivity (1.25 S m-1). The organohydrogel-based strain sensor showed a high strain sensitivity (GF = 2.1). In addition, due to a synergistic effect between the DMSO/H2O binary solvent and CaCl2, the organohydrogel remained flexible (could bend 180°) and conductive (1.01 S m-1) at -20 °C. Interestingly, the TOCNs exerted a reinforcing effect on both the mechanical properties and ionic conductivity. This research provides a novel strategy to prepare ion-conductive organohydrogels with good mechanical properties, conductivity, and anti-freezing properties for use as flexible electronic materials.

Abstract:To date, ionic conducting hydrogel attracts tremendous attention as an alternative to the conventional rigid metallic conductors in fabricating flexible devices, owing to their intrinsic characteristics. However, simultaneous realization of high stiffness, toughness, ionic conductivity, and freezing tolerance through a simple approach is still a challenge. Here, a novel highly stretchable (up to 660%), strong (up to 2.1 MPa), tough (5.25 MJ m−3), and transparent (up to 90%) ionic conductive (3.2 S m−1) organohydrogel is facilely fabricated, through sol–gel transition of polyvinyl alcohol and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) in dimethyl sulfoxide‐water solvent system. The ionic conductive organohydrogel presents superior freezing tolerance, remaining flexible and conductive (1.1 S m−1) even at −70 °C, as compared to the other reported anti‐freezing ionic conductive (organo)hydrogel. Notably, this material design demonstrates synergistic effect of CNFs in boosting both mechanical properties and ionic conductivity, tackling a long‐standing dilemma among strength, toughness, and ionic conductivity for the ionic conducting hydrogel. In addition, the organohydrogel displays high sensitivity toward both tensile and compressive deformation and based on which multi‐functional sensors are assembled to detect human body movement with high sensitivity, stability, and durability. This novel organohydrogel is envisioned to function as a versatile platform for multi‐functional sensors in the future.

Abstract:Simultaneously achieving good mechanical properties and high tolerance to hot and cold environments in hydrogel materials remains a challenge. In this work, ethylene glycol (EG) and cellulose nanofibrils (CNFs) were introduced into chitosan/poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid) double-network hydrogels to improve their toughness and tolerance to hot and cold environments. The effect of EG and CNFs on the properties of the hydrogels was studied respectively. EG increases the tolerance of the hydrogel to hot and cold environments. However, EG had a negative effect on the mechanical properties of hydrogels. In addition, CNFs substantially enhanced the strength and toughness of the chitosan/poly(acrylamide-acrylic acid)/EG organohydrogels. Finally, with the cooperative action of EG and CNFs, high-strength and tough organohydrogels (tensile strength = 0.71 MPa, elongation at break = 787.2%) with a high tolerance to hot and cold environments (-23 °C to 60 °C) were obtained. Further, EG enabled the organohydrogel to revert to its original state after drying at 60 °C. This paper provides a new route to prepare high-strength and tough organohydrogels with a high tolerance to hot and cold environments.
One-Pot Freezing-Thawing Preparation of Multifunctional Cellulose Nanocrystals/Poly(vinyl alcohol) Ionic Organohydrogel

Abstract:Cellulose nanocrystals were extracted by the method of acid hydrolysis of microcrystalline cellulose, and a simple one-pot method of dissolving polyvinyl alcohol and cellulose nanocrystals in dimethyl sulfoxide/water is proposed to prepare ionic conductive organohydrogels. Transmission electron microscope, ultraviolet-visible spectrophotometer, X-ray diffraction, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, universal material testing machine, electrochemical workstation, and the LCR digital bridge tester were used to study the microscopic morphology, light trans-mission properties, mechanical performance, electrical properties and sensing properties of the organohydrogel. The results show that the ionic conductive organohydrogels exhibit high stretchability (377% strain), firmness (strain at break to 345.51 kPa), good transparency and high gauge factor 4.63 (0–400% strain). The tensile fracture test shows that the organohydrogel has good toughness and elasticity in terms of tensile strength and toughness. Moreover, the PVA/CNC organohydrogels were used as the conductive medium to form a self-powered strain sensor and wearable strain sensor, and the open-circuit voltage of the self-powered system could reach 0.859 V, indicating that the organohydrogel has good electrical conductivity and sensor's stability.

Abstract:Polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogels have drawn enormous attention but are severely limited on account of poor mechanical properties at subzero temperatures. Here, we propose a simple method to tackle this problem by incorporating chain entanglements of PVA chains and coordination bonds between Al3+ ions and -OH groups via air-drying and soaking in Al2(SO4)3 solution. The multiple dynamic interactions worked in tandem to achieve outstanding mechanical performance (41.0 MPa of fracture stress and 49.9 MJ/m3 of toughness). Meanwhile, the introduction of ions endowed the PVA hydrogel with excellent anti-freezing property (36.9 MPa of fracture stress and 51.4 MJ/m3 of toughness at -20 ℃), superior to most anti-freezing gels at subzero temperatures. The facile synthesis and superior properties might expand the application of PVA hydrogels.

Abstract:Summary: Hydrogels have gained tremendous attention due to their versatility in soft electronics, actuators, biomedical sensors, etc. Due to the high water content, hydrogels are usually soft, weak, and freeze below 0°C, which brings severe limitations to applications such as soft robotics and flexible electronics in harsh environments. Most existing anti-freezing gels suffer from poor mechanical properties and urgently need further improvements. Here, we took inspirations from tendon and coniferous trees and provided an effective method to strengthen polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) hydrogel while making it freeze resistant. The salting-out effect was utilized to create a hierarchically structured polymer network, which induced superior mechanical properties (Young's modulus: 10.1 MPa, tensile strength: 13.5 MPa, and toughness: 127.9 MJ/m3). Meanwhile, the cononsolvency effect was employed to preserve the structure and suppress the freezing point to −60°C. Moreover, we have demonstrated the broad applicability of our material by fabricating PVA hydrogel-based hydraulic actuators and ionic conductors.
Preparation and Properties of Double Guest-Host and Covalent Crosslinked Anti-Freezing Organic Hydrogel

Abstract:In this study, a strategy of anti-freezing organic hydrogel system is proposed, which can be used as a medical gel dressing for the prevention and treatment of frostbite in extra cold regions. The supramolecular polymer organic hydrogel is a double network gel dressing. β-Cyclodextrin and azobenzene groups form the first supramolecular network through supramolecular host-guest interaction, and acrylamide copolymerization with crosslinker forms the second layer of covalent network. Compared with acrylamide hydrogels, the stress required to reach the same strain at –25°C is 12 times higher than that at 25°C, while the stress required by organic hydrogels at the same conditions slightly changes, indicating that organic hydrogels also show good flexibility at low temperatures. At the same time, double-network organic hydrogel could recover to 70% of original tensile capacity after self-healing.

Abstract:This novel organohydrogel featured toughness, tolerance to extreme environment, as well as excellent recognition capability to multiple stimuli. Conductive hydrogels have attracted widespread attention in diverse applications. However, the fragile nature of conducting polymers hinders the long‐time stability of the hydrogels. What's more, hydrogels will lose elasticity and conductivity at room temperature or sub‐zero temperature because of the high water content. Herein, we proposed a long‐term stable and anti‐freezing organohydrogel with high stretchability (up to 1140%), which consist of multi‐functional nano‐micelles (Pluronic F127 diacrylate [F127DA]), Polyacrylamide, and Poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene): polystryrene sulfonate (PEDOT:PSS) in a water/glycerin binary solvent system. The gel is thermal tolerant to maintain all the properties under extreme wide temperature spectrum (−40°C or 60°C). More importantly, the organohydrogel possesses excellent recognition capability to multiple stimuli. It is anticipated that this organohydrogel will have great potential in sensing applications.

Abstract:As a three-dimensional cross-linked network polymer with electrical conductivity, the ionic conductive hydrogel has enormous application potential in electronic devices, bionic skin, sensors, and other regions. However, due to the limitations of poor mechanical properties and single functionality, conductive hydrogels are difficult to fully meet the application requirements. In this paper, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) and tannic acid (TA) were used as raw materials, DMSO/H2O binary solvent system was selected, and NaCl was introduced to construct an ionic organohydrogel with high strength, high toughness, stretchability, frost resistance and ionic conductivity. To demonstrate the application, PVA-TA organohydrogel was used as a wire to light up the LED in circuit and can be used as a touch screen pen for electronic screen painting. Besides, PVA-TA organohydrogel had high sensitivity to both tensile deformation and compression deformation. So it can monitor the movement of the hand and provide a path for flexible mechanical sensors. This new organohydrogel has considerable application prospects in the fields of antifreeze materials and multifunctional sensors.

Abstract:Antifreezing gels are promising in diverse engineering applications such as structural soft matters, sensors, and wearable devices. However, the capability of fast self-healing and reversible adhesiveness still remain a huge challenge for gels at extreme temperatures. Here, we proposed a solvent-involved cross-linking system composed of polyacrylic acid, polyvinyl alcohol, borax, ethylene glycol, and water, capable of antifreezing below -90 °C. It was not only antifreezing, anticrystalline, and abundant in dynamic bonds but also highly transparent, stretchable (over 800%), and conductive over the scope of temperature from -60 to 60 °C. Moreover, this gel could self-heal within 1 min and repeatedly adhere to multiple substrates including glass, metal, and rubber with an adhesive strength greater than 18 kPa. These key functions of the gel could be mostly preserved after 5 days of storage at 70% relative humidity. It is anticipated that our research opens a new scope for high-performance extreme environment-tolerant adhesives or wearable devices.
Preparation of nanocellulose gelatin-based ion-conducting hydrogel for flexible strain sensors

Abstract:In this study, to improve the anti-freezing performance without affecting the tensile properties and conductive properties, a free radical graft polymerization method is used. N, N'-methylene acrylamide (MBA) was used as a cross-linking agent, and Irgacure2959 was used as an initiator to graft acrylamide (AM) onto the gelatin skeleton to construct a gelatin/polyacrylamide/nanocellulose fibrils/glycerol/aluminum chloride hydrogel (GACGA). The comprehensive performance of the hydrogel was evaluated. The GACGA hydrogel still maintained a high conductivity at -30°C, and it still had a good morphology without significant loss of quality after dehydration at room temperature for 7 days. GACGA hydrogel has excellent stretchability, conductivity, sensitivity, and anti-freeze properties, making it ideal for smart wearable devices and soft robots.

Abstract:Hydrogels have received widespread attention as flexible strain sensors in the fields of human motion detection and health monitoring. However, the presence of large amounts of water in traditional hydrogels leads to poor mechanical properties and low anti-freezing, which severely limits their applications. Herein, a novel PVA/DMSO/CMC/AlCl 3 /TA/LiCl (PDCATL) composite organo-hydrogel was developed by freeze-thaw and salt solution immersion methods, using polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC), aluminum chloride hexahydrate (AlCl 3 ·6H 2 O) and tannic acid (TA) dissolved in a dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO)/water binary solvent. The PDCATL organohydrogel exhibited high tensile strength and elongation at break (up to 1.90 MPa and 587%), which can withstand >6000 times its own weight, good anti-freezing and excellent transparency (>90% light transmission). The PDCATL organohydrogel still maintained excellent transparency, flexibility, recyclability and signal sensing capability at low temperatures (−20 °C). The PDCATL organohydrogel also had good strain sensitivity (GF = 1.82) as a wearable strain sensor and can be used to detect motion and physiological activity signals in various parts of the human body. This study will provide a viable avenue for the application of hydrogel sensors in the fields of visual human-computer interaction, wearable sensors, visual optical detection and medical health detection.

Bioinspired Tough Organohydrogel Dynamic Interfaces Enabled Subzero Temperature Antifrosting, Deicing, and Antiadhesion

Abstract:Icing of water (moisture) at subzero temperatures with different length scales is harmful to a variety of applications spanning from large-scale aircraft to small camera lens. Existing strategies relying on controlling the surface structure and material are encumbered with shortcomings of short frost delay time, poor durability, and difficulty in large-scale production. Inspired from the mucus secretion of mollusks, we introduce organohydrogel dynamic interfaces that can perform dynamic and reversible exchange of the cryoprotectant and water at the interface, resulting in exceptional antifrosting, antiadhesion, and deicing properties with long-term durability. The replenishable coating shows superlubrication to the surface ice with a sliding angle up to 1.9 ± 0.4o and a frost delay time up to 970 ± 31 min in the presence of water spray (99% relative humidity) at subzero temperatures. Abstract:Superb strong and tough stretchable conductive organo‐hydrogels are prepared by a novel freeze‐casting assisted solution substitution strategy. This strategy endows the organo‐hydrogels with synergistic strengthening and toughening mechanisms across multiple length scales over their exquisite hierarchical structures. The organo‐hydrogels are demonstrated as promising materials for soft electronics with remarkable multi‐functionality, including strain sensitivity, thermo‐healability, freezing tolerance, and recoverability. High strength, toughness, and conductivity are among the most sought‐after properties of flexible electronics. However, existing engineering materials find it difficult to achieve both excellent mechanical properties and high conductivity. To address this challenge, this study proposes a facile yet versatile strategy for preparing super‐tough conductive organo‐hydrogels via freeze‐casting assisted solution substitution (FASS). This FASS strategy enables the formation of organo‐hydrogels in one step with exquisite hierarchical anisotropic structures coupled with synergistic strengthening and toughening effects across multiple length scales. As an exemplary material, the prepared polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) organo‐hydrogel with solvent content up to 87 wt% exhibits a combination of high strength (6.5 MPa), high stretchability (1710% in strain), ultra‐high toughness (58.9 MJ m−3), as well as high ionic conductivity up to 6.5 S m−1 with excellent strain sensitivity. The exceptional combination of mechanical properties and conductivity makes the PVA organo‐hydrogel a promising flexible electronics material. In addition, the FASS strategy can also endow hydrogels with multi‐functions, including thermo‐healability, freezing tolerance and shape recoverability, and can be applied to various hydrogel materials, such as carboxymethyl cellulose, sodium alginate, and chitosan. Hence, this work provides an all‐around solution for preparing advanced strong and tough conductive soft materials for a multitude of applications.

Abstract:It is particularly challenging to prepare hydrogels with excellent mechanical properties that are comparable to those of strong biological tissues such as ligaments and tendons. Here, we present a facile method to fabricate tough and multifunctional hydrogels by freeze-thawing the self-reinforced polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) composite prepared from acetal hydrolysis of commercial polyvinyl formal (PVFM) fabric. The resultant hydrogels exhibit simultaneously high tensile strength (18.5 MPa), toughness (14.7 ± 2.9 MJ/m 3 ), tearing resistance (35 N/mm), flexibility and excellent environment adaptability without compromising transparency. In addition, this hydrogel has good ionic conductivity, which can be applied to strain sensors and touch screens, and with proper design, it is successfully applied in flexible actuators. These results indicate this hydrogel has great potential for applications in different fields such as smart wearable devices and bionic actuators. The preparation method proposed in this paper is simple and controllable, and the material properties can be customized to meet specific needs, opening up possibilities for large-scale production of hydogels.

Abstract:Poor mechanical properties and freezing at low temperatures of traditional photochromic hydrogels limit their applications. Here, a novel type of photochromic nanocomposite organohydrogels (NC OGHs) by adding tungsten oxide nanoparticles was prepared by a simple one-pot method. The photochromic NC OGHs demonstrated excellent integrated properties, including high transparency, high mechanical properties, low-temperature resistance, anti-dehydration, rewrite capability, and UV blocking ability. In addition, the degree of coloration of NC OGHs could be precisely controlled by UV irradiation, and the bleaching process could be controlled by the temperature and atmosphere. Besides flexible optical information storage devices and optical filters, these photochromic NC OGHs were also used for smart windows in both room temperature and cold environments.
