Abstract:Critical thinking skills are crucial for success in the modern workforce, particularly for graduate students, who often aim to become physicians or researchers. Primary literature provides an excellent opportunity to practice these skills. We describe a course that includes a structured analysis of four recent papers from diverse fields of biology. To facilitate a critical approach to primary literature, we included a paper with questionable data interpretation and two papers investigating the same biological question, yet reaching opposite conclusions. We report a significant increase in students' self‐efficacy in analyzing data from research papers, evaluating authors' conclusions, and designing experiments. However, using our critical thinking skills test, we observed a statistically significant increase in students' performance in experimental design, but not in analysis or evaluation. Our analysis of students' responses to the question: “What aspects of reading and analyzing primary literature do you find most challenging?” revealed post‐instructional changes in students' perceptions. After instruction, we observed a shift in the cognitive level of challenges our students associated with primary literature, from Lower Order to Higher Order Cognitive Skills. These changes are also consistent with the transition from a novice to a competent reader.

Abstract:PURPOSE Oxidative damage is one of the major factors associated with the formation of age-related cataract and with senescence of various cell types. Although the effects of oxidative stress are complex, we focused on whether oxidative damage affects control of the cell cycle in lens epithelial cells. METHODS BrdU labeling and FACS analysis were used to investigate the effect of H2O2 on the cell cycle of HLE B-3 cells. In addition, western and Northern blot analysis were performed to assess the expression of cell cycle regulatory proteins and transfection with siRNA was used to knock out expression of p21Cip1. The activation of MAPK family members by oxidative stress was assessed using antibodies to detect the activated forms. To confirm the effect of H2O2 on an ex vivo model, its effect on cultures of the lenses of 3-week-old SD rats were examined. The localization and expression of PCNA and p21Cip1 in the rat lenses were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. RESULTS FACS analysis showed that H2O2 treatment induced G2/M phase arrest of HLE B-3 cells. p21Cip1 was strongly induced by H2O2, whereas expression of other cell cycle genes was unchanged. Attenuation of p21Cip1 expression using siRNA reduced the H2O2 induced G2/M arrest. Furthermore, JNK and ERK were activated by H2O2 and their specific inhibitors SP600125 (for JNK) and U0126 (for ERK1/2) prevented p21Cip1 expression and blocked cell cycle arrest. H2O2 treatment of a rat lens organ culture also caused an increase in p21Cip1. However, H2O2 treatment lowered the levels of p27Kip1, cdc2, and PCNA in the rat lens culture, unlike in the HLE B-3 cells. CONCLUSIONS The accumulation of p21Cip1 in lenses exposed to oxidative stress may play a role as a defensive mediator of oxidative damage, an indicator for senescence or aging, or an inducer for the formation of cataract. This finding links oxidative stress with p21Cip1-mediated control of the cell cycle in lens epithelial cells.
A Progressive Reading, Writing, and Artistic Module to Support Scientific Literacy

Abstract:Scientific literacy, marked by the ability and willingness to engage with scientific information, is supported through a new genre of citizen science-course-based research in association with undergraduate laboratories. A three-phased progressive learning module was developed to enhance student engagement in such contexts while supporting three learning outcomes: I) present an argument based on evidence, II) analyze science and scientists within a social context, and III) experience, reflect upon, and communicate the nature of scientific discovery. Phase I entails guided reading and reflection of citizen science-themed texts. In Phase II, students write, peer-review, and edit position and counterpoint papers inspired by the following prompt, "Nonscientists should do scientific research." Phase III involves two creative assignments intended to communicate the true nature of science. Students work collaboratively to develop public service announcement-like poster campaigns to debunk a common misconception about the nature of science or scientists. Individually, they create a work of art to communicate a specific message about the raw experience of performing scientific research. Suggestions for implementation and modifications are provided. Strengths of the module include the development of transferable skills, temporal distribution of grading demands, minimal in-class time needed for implementation, and the inclusion of artistic projects to support affective learning domains. This citizen science-themed learning module is an excellent complement to laboratory coursework, as it serves to surprise, challenge, and inspire students while promoting disciplinary values.

Abstract:One challenge that many neuroscience instructors face is how to teach students to communicate within the field. The goal of this project was to improve students' scientific writing in an introductory psychology laboratory course that serves as a feeder course into the neuroscience curriculum. This course included a scaffolded approach - breaking assignments into different sections that build upon each other to allow for more direction and feedback on each section. Students were also provided with examples of scientific writing, given direction on finding and reading journal articles, and were taught how to effectively peer review a paper. Research papers were assessed before (Year 1) and after (Year 2) this scaffolded approach was instituted. The assessment included measures of "Genre Knowledge" for each section of a research paper (abstract, introduction, method, results, discussion) as well as measures of "Writing Elements" (grammar, formatting, clarity, transitions, building to the hypothesis, using evidence). The results indicated that there was an improvement for Genre Knowledge scores when comparing Year 1 to Year 2. However, there was no systematic improvement in Writing Elements. This suggests that this teaching technique was most effective in improving students' ability to write within the scientific genre. The logistics of implementing such an approach are discussed.

Abstract:Writing is an essential component of scientific activity. As such, it is necessary to develop strategies to provide equitable training opportunities for science writing. In order to provide learners with ways to improve their writing regardless of their language background and/or institutional and departmental environments, this article describes a self-learning strategy, Contextual Analysis of Scientific Publications for Advancing writing Skills (CASPArS), that employs contextual analysis of top scientists’ publications. By using full-text search software to analyze several hundred selected publications, the CASPArS method affords a visual representation of proper usage of words/phrases of interest, facilitating learners to understand writing patterns and rules in leading scientific papers. In order to increase the accessibility of the method for diverse communities around the world, a free-search software sin3rou and 500 open-access chemistry papers by 150 US researchers have been included in the Supporting Information. Using this CASPARS strategy, learners/students are able to develop appropriate writing through “professors’ eyes” by taking advantage of established scientific writers’ experience and knowledge of language usage.

Abstract:Undergraduate students are generally unfamiliar with scientific literature. Further, students experience frustration when they read research articles the way they read textbooks, from beginning to end. Using a team-based active learning exercise, an instruction librarian and colleagues at University of Texas at Austin introduce nutritional sciences students to a method for reading research papers. Librarians provide student-pairs with one section (introduction, methods, results, or discussion) of a scientific research article. Student-pairs read, discuss, and take notes, then join with pairs assigned the other sections of the article to compare their understanding of the research presented. The exercise reinforces students' critical evaluation skills by providing a productive reading strategy based on the purpose of each section of the research article. A Model For Teaching Advanced Neuroscience Methods: A Student-Run Seminar to Increase Practical Understanding and Confidence

Abstract:Neuroscience doctoral students must master specific laboratory techniques and approaches to complete their thesis work (hands-on learning). Due to the highly interdisciplinary nature of the field, learning about a diverse range of methodologies through literature surveys and coursework is also necessary for student success (hands-off learning). Traditional neuroscience coursework stresses what is known about the nervous system with relatively little emphasis on the details of the methods used to obtain this knowledge. Furthermore, hands-off learning is made difficult by a lack of detail in methods sections of primary articles, subfield-specific jargon and vague experimental rationales. We designed a student-taught course to enable first-year neuroscience doctoral students to overcome difficulties in hands-off learning by introducing a new approach to reading and presenting primary research articles that focuses on methodology. In our literature-based course students were encouraged to present a method with which they had no previous experience. To facilitate weekly discussions, "experts" were invited to class sessions. Experts were advanced graduate students who had hands-on experience with the method being covered and served as discussion co-leaders. Self-evaluation worksheets were administered on the first and last days of the 10-week course and used to assess students' confidence in discussing research and methods outside of their primary research expertise. These evaluations revealed that the course significantly increased the students' confidence in reading, presenting and discussing a wide range of advanced neuroscience methods.

Abstract:Increasing emphasis is being put on providing students with opportunities to read and write about primary scientific literature in undergraduate neuroscience education. Extensive research has indicated that students' attitudes and self-efficacy as well as writing quality improve when they are provided with opportunities for practice and feedback. Here we tested the value of using a blog format to practice writing about scientific research articles. Students were assigned small groups and did work on their own individual schedules to build toward time allotted in class to discuss the articles with their groups. Our goal was to build confidence in the students' ability to read and analyze original research articles. We found that the students in the junior-level Systems Neuroscience course had high confidence in their ability to read and analyze papers at the end of the blogging experience. Surprisingly, however, this did not manifest in a change in quality of final, higher stakes, written reports on original research articles when compared to a control sample from a previous year that did not include the blog assignments. We conclude that blogs provide a useful format for students to discuss research articles collaboratively while building confidence in their ability to analyze and discuss original neuroscience articles. Although the final reports' quality did not change compared to the earlier offering of the course, we believe that the blog experience is a valuable tool for building confidence and creating a positive experience for students in learning to read and analyze original neuroscience research articles.

Despite the progress made, there still exists important topics within entrepreneurial exit where scholarly understanding is scant. This special issue discusses new and open topics of research on entrepreneurial exit. Three papers examine three such topics including pricing intentions of exiting entrepreneurs, exit considerations among angel investors, and the relationship between exit and failure in new ventures.

Abstract:Education about scientific publishing and manuscript peer review is not universally provided in undergraduate science courses. Since peer review is integral to the scientific process and central to the identity of a scientist, we envision a paradigm shift where teaching peer review becomes integral to undergraduate science education. We hypothesize that teaching undergraduates how to peer review scientific manuscripts may facilitate their development of scientific literacy and identity formation. To this end, we developed a constructivist, service-learning curriculum for biology undergraduates to learn about the mechanisms of peer review using preprints and then to write and publish their own peer reviews of preprints as a way to authentically join the scientific community of practice. The curriculum was implemented as a semester-long intervention in one class and, in another class, as an embedded module intervention. Students' scientific literacy and peer review ability were assessed using quantitative methods. Student's perceptions of their scientific literacy and identity were assessed using thematic analysis of students' reflective writing. Here, we present data on the improvement in the peer review ability of undergraduates in both classes and data on the curriculum's interrelated impact on students' development of scientific literacy, identity, and belonging in peer and professional discourse spaces. These data suggest that undergraduates can and should be trained in peer review to foster the interrelated development of their scientific literacy, scientific identity, and sense of belonging in science.

Abstract:Many physicians and parents consider immunizations routine; as a result, they fail to discuss this important aspect of health care. Parents should be educated about each vaccine and the role it plays in the well-being of their child. To ensure that parents will be able to give informed consent to have their child immunized, the physician should provide information on the nature, prevalence, and risks of the disease; the type of immunization product to be used; expected benefits; risk of side effects; and required follow-up. In addition, the concept of individual immunity as a contribution to community well-being should be discussed. Parents should be appraised of the importance of maintaining accurate immunization records. Verbal communication of this information at the time of vaccination can be reinforced by written documents. One way to verify that parents have understood the information is for the physician to question them at the next office visit.
Adapting Undergraduate Biology to Include Science Practices by Teaching Students to Generate Scientific Explanations

Abstract:Generating scientific explanations is a fundamental science practice in biology, yet pedagogical efforts to make this practice explicit and devote time for students to perform this practice are not common in gateway science courses. We developed a quarter-long scientific literature annotation project to teach students how to produce scientific explanations in an adapted version of an introductory biology course. We assessed student proficiency in this practice before and after project completion using a previously validated instrument and a rubric adapted to focus on practice distinct from content. Students were given a final exam question shared with a parallel course. The parallel course was taught by the same instructor during the same quarter with similar demographic composition but without the adapted curriculum. Data revealed pre/post improvements in student performance within the adapted course and better performance on a shared final exam question across courses. Results suggest that assessment-driven lesson plans can help instructors engage students in learning science practices. We believe rubrics designed to distinguish practice from content were critical in revealing student achievement and highlighting areas of struggle. We recommend instructors use assessment-driven curriculum to explicitly teach, assess and recognise practices in college classrooms.

Exploration and Practice of Guiding Junior Undergraduates to Read Scientific Research Literature in the Form of Course

Abstract:Reading research literature is a necessary skill that medical students need master as soon as possible and it is also an important way to cultivate their scientific literacy and building of innovation capacity. Guiding junior undergraduates to read research literature in a form of course may help students to master systematic and scientific literature reading methods and lay a solid foundation for their future development. Taking the example of literature reading and academic communication, a college level general education elective course has been offered by the biochemistry teaching team from Peking University School of Basic Medical Sciences. The course is developed for the sophomores and juniors of Peking University Health Science Center and this article described course design, implementation and evaluation which were carried out by final examination and questionnaire survey. The results show that among 137 students who have taken this course, 99.3% (136/137) of the students successfully completed the course and passed the examination. The questionnaire survey of 72 students taking this course during 2020 and 2021 shows that guiding junior undergraduates to read scientific research literature in a form of selective courses significantly improved students' literature reading ability [88.9%(64/72)] and their skill in presentation [66.7%(48/72)], stimulated students' interest in scientific research [51.4%(37/72)], and enabled students to benefit from peer learning [63.9%(46/72)]. This course has initially established a set of early-phase training of research capacity in a form of single course. The learning is guided by teachers and follows the students-centered principle, which is conducive to cultivating students' essential capacity of literature reading and to stimulating their interest in scientific research.

Several excellent pedagogical tools have been developed to teach scientific literacy and to measure competency in reading and interpreting scientific literature. However, fewer tools exist to measure learning gains with respect to writing, or that teach the more abstract processes of peer review and scientific publishing, which are essential for developing scholarly identity and publication currency. Here we describe our approach to teaching scientific writing and publishing to undergraduate students within a synthetic biology course. Using gold standard practices in project-based learning, we created a writing project in which students became experts in a specific application area of synthetic biology with relevance to an important global problem or challenge. To measure learning gains associated with our learning outcomes, we adapted and expanded the Student Attitudes, Abilities, and Beliefs (SAAB) concept inventory to include additional questions about the process of scientific writing, authorship, and peer review. Our results suggest the project-based approach was effective in achieving the learning objectives with respect to writing and peer reviewed publication, and resulted in high student satisfaction and student self-reported learning gains. We propose that these educational practices will contribute directly to the development of scientific identity of undergraduate students as synthetic biologists, and will be useful in creating a more diverse synthetic biology research enterprise.

Applying Research-Based Teaching Strategies in a Biomedical Engineering Programming Course: Introduction to Computer Aided Diagnosis

Abstract:There are increasing calls for the use of research-based teaching strategies to improve engagement and learning in engineering. In this innovation paper, we detail the application of research-based teaching strategies in a computer programming focused biomedical engineering module. This four-week, one-credit undergraduate biomedical engineering (BME) programming-based image processing module consisted of a blend of lectures, active learning exercises, guided labs, and a final project. Students completed surveys and generated concept maps at three time points in the module (pre, mid, and post) to document the impact of integrating research-based teaching strategies. Students demonstrated a significant (p < 0.05) increase in conceptual knowledge, confidence with material, and belief in the usefulness of material from the beginning to end of the module. Students also had high (> 4 out of 5) perceptions of gains in knowledge and attitudes toward instructor support. Overall, the novel design utilized multiple research-based pedagogies and increased students' conceptual knowledge, self-efficacy, and perceived usefulness of material. The proposed design is an example of how multiple research-based instructional strategies can be integrated into an undergraduate biomedical engineering course.
