Abstract:We synthesized Ag-doped CeO 2 /ZnO nanocomposites by means of a ethanolic dispersion technique. Several methodologies for characterization were applied to the study of these nanocomposites, such as transmission electron microscopy (TEM), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), UV–visible absorption spectroscopy, and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The composite sample was found to contain wurtzite and cubic phases of ZnO and CeO 2 , respectively, according to the XRD examination. A strong bond between CeO 2 and ZnO within the nanocomposite was demonstrated by the SEM and TEM investigations. Moreover, it was discovered that the addition of Ag and the coupling of CeO 2 caused a red-shift and moved ZnO absorption edge from the UV to the visible spectrum. Consequently, the bandgap was reduced from 3.08 eV to 2.69 eV, and the absorbance band intensity increased in the visible region. Utilizing visible light, 15% Ag-doped CeO 2 /ZnO nanocomposites exhibit enhanced photocatalytic properties (98.90%) for the degradation of methylene blue (MB) within 60 min. The long-term reliability and recyclability of the photocatalyst were explored through four successive cycles, revealing its persistent and reusable nature. An active radical quenching test was conducted to elucidate the involvement of and radicals, with radicals identified as the primary species in the photocatalytic breakdown of MB. Ag-doped CeO 2 /ZnO nanocomposites, featuring metal ion doping, displayed notable improvements in photodegradation activity, making them well suited for the effective removal of hazardous dyes present in textile effluents.

Abstract:As refractory organic pollutants, dyes have caused widespread concern about their pollution of water environments. The development of visible light responsive catalysts with high catalytic activity is of great significance for the removal of organic pollutants using sunlight as a light source. Ag-Cu2O composite film was prepared by the electrochemical deposition and a redox reaction. The influence of Ag on the microstructure and performance of the Cu2O was investigated by physical and chemical characterization. Results show that compared with the single-layer Cu2O film, the Ag-Cu2O composite film shows good visible light absorption performance. The carrier concentration, photocurrent and open-circuit voltage are all increased, and the photogenerated electron and hole transfer and separation efficiency are effectively improved. Degradation experiments show that the Ag-Cu2O exhibits good photocatalytic performance, and that the degradation rate of methylene blue reaches over 95.1%. The enhanced photocatalytic activity of Cu2O is primarily due to the efficient separation and transfer system of the photogenerated charge from Cu2O to Ag and the increased visible-light absorption ability; thus the composite film exhibits a synergistic effect. Experiments for detecting the active substances show that hydroxyl radical and hole play a leading role in methylene blue degradation. Methylene blue begins to be degraded under the action of the photogenerated holes and hydroxyl radicals. Based on the analysis of experimental data and combined with the theoretical calculation, two possible degradation pathways of methylene blue are proposed. This work presents a new idea for studying the mechanism and pathway of the degradation of methylene blue with an Ag-Cu2O and provides a new opportunity for the use of semiconductor photocatalytic oxidation technology to remove organic dyes in wastewater

Abstract:In this research work, we have successfully synthesized the CeO2/Co3O4/g-C3N4 ternary nanocomposite for hydrothermal method for photocatalytic applications. The synthesized nanocomposites were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, Field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), Transmission electron microscopy TEM, Photoluminescent spectra (PL), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Brunauer- Emmett-Teller (BET) and Ultraviolet diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-DRS) technique. As per the optical spectroscopic investigations CeO2/Co3O4/g-C3N4 ternary nanocomposite exhibited the high optical absorption range and its band gap is reduced from 2.95 eV to1.83 eV. The PL spectra showed the lowered emission peak intensity of ternary nanocomposite which is revealed that the better charge separation and slow recombination of electron hole pairs. The highest photocatalytic degradation efficiency of CeO2/Co3O4/g-C3N4 ternary nanocomposite showed 93 % and 86 % towards the pollutant methylene blue and Rhodamine B. Moreover, photodegradation of the pollutants followed pseudo-first order kinetics with a very high-rate constant of 0.02211 min-1 and 0.017756 min-1. Additionally, the ternary nano catalyst was delivered the remarkable stability performance even after five cycles. This research may provide a low-cost approach for synthesized visible light responsive catalysts for use in environmental remediation applications.

Abstract:BACKGROUND: With the development of the textile and dye industry, a large amount of dye wastewater has been discharged. Semiconductor photocatalysis has been widely used in the treatment of environmental pollution, so it is very important to study efficient, nontoxic and stable photocatalysts. RESULTS: In this study, a microspherical activated carbon/Mn3O4/SrTiO3 composite photocatalyst with high catalytic activity was synthesized using sol-gel and chemical precipitation methods. The photocatalyst was characterized through X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, photoluminescence, Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy and photocurrent measurements, and the effects of the initial methylene blue (MB) concentration and pH on the catalytic performance of the photocatalyst were investigated. The results revealed that the MC/Mn3O4/SrTiO3 composite has large light absorbance, and it can effectively inhibit photoinduced electron-hole pair recombination. The catalyst exhibited high photocatalytic degradation activity, and the degradation efficiency of MB at 300 ppm and pH 7 reached 99% after 80 min of UV light irradiation. The photodegradation process conformed to the pseudo-first-order kinetic model. Recyclability experiments showed that MC/Mn3O4/SrTiO3 composite has high stability, and the degradation rate of MB is > 70% after three repeat uses. Abstract:Widespread ecosystem degradation from noxious substances like industrial waste, toxic dyes, pesticides, and herbicides poses serious environmental risks. For remediation of these hazardous problems, present study introduces an innovative Cu-doped Ce₂Zr₂O₇ nano-photocatalyst, fabricated via a simple, eco-friendly hydrothermal method, designed to degrade toxic textile dye methylene blue. Harnessing Cu doping for pyrochlore Ce2Zr2O7, structure engineering carried out through a hydrothermal synthesis method to achieve superior photocatalytic performance, addressing limitations of rapid charge carrier recombination in existing photocatalysts. Photoluminescence analysis showed that doped pyrochlore slows charge carrier recombination, boosting dye degradation efficiency. UV-Visible analysis demonstrated an impressive 96 % degradation of methylene blue by Cu-doped Ce2Zr2O7 within 50 min, far exceeding the performance of pristine materials. Trapping experiments clarified the charge transfer mechanism, deepening our understanding of the photocatalytic process. These findings highlight the potential for developing innovative, highly efficient photocatalysts for environmental remediation, offering sustainable solutions to combat pollution. This study not only addresses the limitations of existing photocatalysts but also opens new avenues for enhancing photocatalytic performance through strategic material design.
Heterojunction PdO/CoS as a High-Performance Visible-Light Active Photocatalyst Elimination of Methylene Blue from Aqueous Media

Abstract:In this research, the photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue was investigated using synthesized PdO/CoS nanocomposite under visible light irradiation. The structural and morphological properties were determined using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) surface area analysis, Mott–Schottky analysis, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The Mott–Schottky analysis confirmed the formation of a p-n heterojunction, and the flat band potential values for the n-type and p-type semiconductors were found to be − 1 and 1.3, respectively. The bandgap of the composite was determined to be 3 eV using Diffuse Reflectance Spectroscopy (DRS). When 0.1 g of the synthesized composite was used for 90 min, it successfully degraded 91% of methylene blue with an initial concentration of 10 ppm. In the Design of Experiments (DOE) approach, the optimum conditions for this research were found to be a catalyst mass of 0.06 g, an initial dye concentration of 8 ppm, and 2% palladium doping at pH 10, resulting in a 92.38% degradation efficiency in 110 min. To model the degradation of methylene blue using the synthesized composite, the Fritz–Schlunder and Koble–Corrigan models achieved the highest correlation coefficients (0.995 and 0.992, respectively) and the lowest error functions (0.024, 0.0008) and (0.032, 0.002), respectively. Additionally, the Langmuir–Hinshelwood and Intra-particle diffusion control kinetic models showed the highest correlation coefficient (98%). In summary, the study demonstrated that the PdO/CoS composite exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity for methylene blue degradation, and the optimized conditions resulted in high degradation efficiency. The proposed kinetic models provided valuable insights into the degradation mechanism of methylene blue using the synthesized composite.

Abstract:In this work, visible light response CeO2/CdS decorated cotton fabrics as durable and facile recyclable composite photocatalysts were fabricated for photo-degradation of methylene blue (MB). First of all, amino-functionalized CeO2/CdS heterojunctions were synthesized through a fast, efficient and low-cost co-precipitation method. Subsequently, the as-prepared CeO2/CdS heterojunctions were immobilized on aldehyde-functionalized cotton fabric surfaces as composite photocatalysts via "amine-aldehyde" chemical reaction. The surface microstructure and chemical composition of the CeO2/CdS decorated cotton fabric (CeO2/CdS-CF) were characterized by SEM, FTIR and XPS, respectively. The results showed that CeO2/CdS heterojunctions were successfully anchored and uniformly distributed on the surface of cotton fabric. Since the CeO2/CdS heterostructure with efficient photo-generated charge transfer and separation, the as-prepared CeO2/CdS-CF exhibited excellent photocatalytic activity, degrading MB under simulated sunlight irradiation with a degradation efficiency of 93.8% within 90 min. In addition, the degradation efficiency remained above 90.3% even after five successive degradation cycles, indicating the outstanding stability and recyclability of the obtained CeO2/CdS-CF. This work opened up a facile preparation way for the fabrication of durable and recyclable composite photocatalysts, and has a promising application in treating dye contaminated wastewater.Graphic abstract

Abstract:We use multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) and graphene as carbon nanomaterials to obtain carbon nanomaterilas-CdSe composites using a facile hydrothermal method. The intrinsic characteristics of resulting composites were studied by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) with energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometer. The as-prepared carbon nanomaterilas-CdSe composites possessed great adsorptivity of dyes, extended light absorption range, and efficient charge separation properties simultaneously. Hence, in the photodegradation of methylene blue, a significant enhancement in the reaction rate was observed with carbon nanomaterilas-CdSe composites, compared to the CdSe compound.
Calcaneal fractures: operative versus nonoperative treatment.

Abstract:BACKGROUND The purpose of this report is to compare the late results after operative and nonoperative treatment of intra-articular calcaneal fractures. METHODS From 1982 to 1992 we treated 250 calcaneal fractures of which 193 were intra-articular. Because of a change in operative indication, most fractures were treated nonoperatively before 1989 and operatively thereafter. Follow-up was possible at an average of 5.1 years for 124 intra-articular calcaneal fractures. Out of these, two groups of 33 nonoperatively and 30 operatively treated cases were formed matching each other with regard to prognostic parameters. Results were assessed by a clinical score considering pain, gait, footwear, and return to work. Pre- and postoperative tuber joint angle measurements were evaluated for their prognostic significance. RESULTS In this series of patients, the only statistically significant advantage of operative therapy was concerning return to work. There was no correlation between tuber joint angle and end results. Only when the extremes of the spectrum (nonoperative and operative cases with tuber joint angle < 0 degrees vs. > 25 degrees) were tested against each other was a significant advantage in the group with near normal joint angles found. Thus, open reduction and internal fixation of intra-articular calcaneal fractures can only be expected to benefit those patients with near anatomic reconstruction.
A novel nano-cerium oxide functionalized biochar composite for degradation of organic dye: insight of the photocatalysis mechanism

Abstract:Recently, visible-light-driven photocatalysis attracts much concerns in the remediation of environmental organic pollutants. In this study, the cerium doped biochar was fabricated through the hydrothermal method, and served as an efficient photocatalyst towards rhodamine B degradation under visible light irradiation. Almost 100% of rhodamine B was removed by 2.0 g·L-1 cerium doped biochar after 60 min of visible light irradiation at pH 3, but only about 25.50% and 29.60% of rhodamine B was removed by cerium dioxide and biochar under identical conditions. The degradation process coincided well with the pseudo-first-order kinetic model, and the photodegradation rate constant of cerium doped biochar was 0.0485·min-1, which was respectively 97 and 44 times that of biochar (0.0005·min-1) and cerium dioxide (0.0011·min-1). According to the trapping experiments and electron spin resonance spectroscopy analysis, h+, O2-∙ and ∙OH all participated in the degradation of rhodamine B in the cerium doped biochar photocatalytic systems, and the function of h+ and ∙OH was dominated. Consequently, the biochar could not only be an excellent carrier for supporting cerium dioxide, but also greatly improved its photocatalytic activity. The band gap of cerium doped biochar was narrower than cerium dioxide, which could improve the separation and migration of photogenerated electron-hole pairs under visible-light excitation, thus ultimately enhanced the degradation of rhodamine B. This work provided a deeper understanding of the preparation of biochar-based photocatalyst and its application in the remediation of environmental organic pollution.

Abstract:Herein, the NiFe2O4/CeO2 composite photocatalysts were successfully synthesized via a facile one-pot hydrothermal method. We found that the one-pot synthesized composite photocatalysts exhibited better photocatalytic degradation performance than sole photocatalyst or conventional hand ground composite photocatalyst under visible light irradiation, and the degradation efficiency of methylene blue for the one-pot photocatalyst with 10% CeO2 reached 82% in 10 h. The enhanced photocatalytic degradation performance can be explained by the improved adsorption and charge transfer of the reaction site induced by the CeO2 phase. This study can guide the development of alternative photocatalyst for photocatalytic degradation of wastewater.

Abstract:The profound contamination of reservoirs triggered by industrial dyes and the growing phenomenon of antibiotic-resistant bacteria present substantial risks to both the environment and human health. Conventional approaches to water treatment and microbiological disinfection can frequently become ineffective, expensive, and detrimental to the environment, and this issue underscores the need for novel materials that possess refined photocatalytic and antibacterial characteristics that thrive efficiently in a setting of visible light. An innovative nanostructured nanocomposite, Mo-CeO 2 @C, was synthesized using a green chemistry method coupled with Mo-CeO 2 nanoparticles and pristine CeO 2 . The impact of Ce, Mo, and carbon-based nanocomposites has been validated by leveraging XRD, FTIR, UV–vis spectra, and FE-SEM/EDX. The sunlight-mediated photodegradation performance of carbon-based nanocomposite exhibited a superior photodegradation efficiency of 99.5 %, higher than others. The photocatalytic activity of M.B. dye concentration, catalyst dosage, scavenger test, and recyclability were also conducted, which confirm the optimal catalyst loading of 20 mg, dye concentration 40 ppm, and pH 8 with reusability up to six th cycles. The carbon-coated doped nanocomposite displays superior antibacterial efficacy against gram-positive S. aureus , gram-negative E. coli , and P. vulgaris bacteria in comparison to CeO 2 and Mo-doped CeO 2 . This may be attributed to the combined effects of the generation of reactive oxygen species (R.O.S.) and the intrinsic characteristics of the dopant and carbon matrix. The results of our research emphasize the potential of carbon-based nanoparticles as versatile agents in the realms of environmental rehabilitation and biomedical research. These nanoparticles provide a method to achieve more efficient and resilient solutions in these areas.

Abstract:Unintentional leakage of dyes into the aquatic environment has exacerbated global contamination of water resources in recent years, posing a serious danger to aquatic life and human health. As a result, highly adaptable and effective measures are required to address the worldwide environmental challenge posed by dye usage. Herein, we have adopted hydrothermal technique to synthesize a visible light-induced catalyst based on the Ce0.2Co0.8Fe2O4/g-C3N4 composite. The catalysts were characterized in terms of their morphological, structural, and photoluminescence properties. The photocatalytic proficiency of the Ce0.2Co0.8Fe2O4/g-C3N4 composite was determined by its ability to degrade rhodamine B (RhB) under visible light irradiation. Ce0.2Co0.8Fe2O4/g-C3N4 exhibited superior degradation potential, degrading RhB to 90.27 % in 60 min, compared to CoFe2O4/g-C3N4 (72.28 %), Ce0.2Co0.8Fe2O4 (64.45 %) and CoFe2O4 (56.63 %) under predetermined reaction conditions (catalyst dosage = 0.4 g/L, RhB concentration = 20 mg/L, pH = 7, T = 25 ± 1 °C). The substantial increase in photocatalytic potential was attributed mostly to the interfacial migration of photo-induced charge carriers from g-C3N4 to Ce0.2Co0.8Fe2O4, which may facilitate electron migration. The as-synthesized catalyst demonstrated outstanding stability in four successive cycles. This study may provide a low-cost approach for fabricating visible-light responsive catalysts for use in environmental remediation applications.

Abstract:A graphene-CdSe composite was synthesized by a facile hydrothermal method, and characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy with energy dispersive X-ray analysis, transmission electron microscopy and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectrophotometry. The graphene-CdSe composite efficiently catalyzed the photodegradation of methylene blue (MB), methyl orange (MO) and rhodamine B (Rh.B) in aqueous solution under UV or visible light irradiation. Abstract:Water pollution, significantly influenced by the discharge of synthetic dyes from industries, such as textiles, poses a persistent global threat to human health. Among these dyes, methylene blue, particularly prevalent in the textile sector, exacerbates this issue. This study introduces an innovative approach to mitigate water pollution through the synthesis of nanomaterials using biomass-derived carbon quantum dots (CQDs) from grape pomace and watermelon peel. Utilizing the hydrothermal method at temperatures between 80 and 160 °C over periods ranging from 1 to 24 h, CQDs were successfully synthesized. A comprehensive characterization of the CQDs was performed using UV-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering, Raman spectroscopy, and luminescence spectroscopy, confirming their high quality. The photocatalytic activity of the CQDs in degrading methylene blue was evaluated under both sunlight and incandescent light irradiation, with measurements taken at 20 min intervals over a 2 h period. The CQDs, with sizes ranging from 1-10 nm, demonstrated notable optical properties, including upconversion and down-conversion luminescence. The results revealed effective photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue under sunlight, highlighting the potential for scalable production of these cost-effective catalytic nanomaterials for synthetic dye degradation.

Abstract:A simple approach was developed to synthesize cobalt ferrite nanoparticles/graphene quantum dots (CF/GQDs). The material was prepared from a homogeneous mixture of iron nitrate, cobalt nitrate, and starch at 140, 180 and 200 °C in a 24 h thermal hydrolysis process. The obtained materials were characterised by using X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, ultraviolet–visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, photoluminescence spectroscopy, vibrating-sample magnetometry, and nitrogen adsorption/desorption isotherms. Cobalt ferrite crystals of around 8–10 nm and graphene quantum dots formed directly at 200 °C. Stacking GQDs sheets onto the CF nanoparticles resulted in CF/GQDs nanoparticles. The nanocomposite exhibits satisfactory fluorescent and superparamagnetic properties, which are vital for catalytic applications. The CF/GQDs catalyse significantly the degradation of methylene blue (MB) under visible light. The catalyst can be recycled with an external magnetic field and displays suitable stability. Also, it was reused in three successive experiments with a loss of efficiency of about 5%. The CF/GQDs are considered as an efficient photocatalyst for MB degradation and other dyes. Beilstein J. Abstract:Photocatalysis is a well-known low-cost approach for the degradation of pollutants utilizing the energy of light. However, the most studied photocatalysts are characterized by wide bandgaps (TiO2, ZnO, Cu2O), restricting the solar light utilization to UV. In this study, a magnetic composite catalyst comprised of Fe3O4@SiO2 core-shell nanoparticles, which allow the magnetic recovery and recycling of the catalyst, combined with catalytically active MoO3 particles dispersed in a polydopamine-graphene oxide (GO) matrix, was synthesized to improve visible light removal of methylene blue and phenol. The multicomponent nanocomposite composition was optimized by response surface methodology (RSM) using second-order polynomials to maximize the adsorption and photocatalytic removals, using initially methylene blue (MB) as model pollutant. High coefficients of determination (R2) of 0.84 and 0.94 were obtained for adsorption and photocatalysis, respectively. The catalyst was characterized by various techniques and the effects of the photocatalyst dosage, initial MB concentration, light source, and pH were investigated, achieving a 99.2% MB removal with up to two rounds of recycle. The nanocomposite also demonstrated to produce ca. 60% H2O2 and attain a 85% phenol degradation in the presence of H2O2. Furthermore, it was established that both phenol and MB degradation mechanisms by the new nanocomposite involve the production of reactive oxygen species.Graphical abstract
