Abstract:Engineering Kondo lattice with tailored functionality is desirable for elucidating the heavy fermion physics. We realize the construction of an artificial Kondo lattice/superconductor heterojunction by growing monolayer VSe2 on bulk 2H-NbSe2 with molecular beam epitaxy. Spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy measurements show the emergence of a new charge density wave (CDW) phase with 3 × 3 periodicity on the monolayer VSe2. Unexpectedly, a pronounced Kondo resonance appears around the Fermi level, and distributes uniformly over the entire film, evidencing the formation of Kondo lattice. Density functional theory calculations suggest the existence of magnetic interstitial V atoms in VSe2/NbSe2, which play a key role in forming the CDW phase along with the Kondo lattice observed in VSe2. The Kondo origin is verified from both the magnetic field and temperature dependences of the resonance peak, yielding a Kondo temperature of ~ 44 K. Moreover, a superconducting proximity gap opens on monolayer VSe2, whose shape deviates from the function of one-band BCS superconductor, but is reproduced by model calculations with heavy electrons participating the pairing condensate. Our work lays the experimental foundation for studying interactions between the heavy fermion liquids and the superconducting condensate.
First-principles Study of Charge and Magnetic Ordering in Monolayer NbSe2

Abstract:Monolayer NbSe2 has recently been shown to be a two-dimensional superconductor, with a competing chargedensity wave (CDW) order. This work investigates the electronic structure of monolayer NbSe2 based on firstprinciples calculations, focusing on charge and magnetic orders. It is found that decreased screening in the monolayer NbSe2 with a perfect lattice exhibits magnetic instability, which is removed by the formation of CDW. Two energetically competitive but distinct 3 x 3 CDW structures are revealed computationally, which have a significant impact on the Fermi surface. The relations of the potential CDW phases with experimental structure and the coexisting superconductivity are discussed.

Abstract:The doped Hubbard model is one of the paradigmatic platforms to engineer exotic quantum many-body states, including charge-ordered states, strange metals and unconventional superconductors. While undoped and doped correlated phases have been experimentally realized in a variety twisted van der Waals materials, experiments in monolayer materials, and in particular 1T transition metal dichalcogenides, have solely reached the conventional insulating undoped regime. Correlated phases in monolayer two-dimensional materials have much higher associated energy scales than their twisted counterparts, making doped correlated monolayers an attractive platform for high temperature correlated quantum matter. Here, we demonstrate the realization of a doped Mott phase in a van der Waals dichalcogenide 1T-NbSe$_2$ monolayer. The system is electron doped due to electron transfer to a monolayer van der Waals substrate via proximity, leading to a correlated triangular lattice with both half-filled and fully-filled sites. We analyze the distribution of the half-filled and filled sites and show the arrangement is unlikely to be controlled by disorder alone, and we show that the presence of competing non-local many-body correlations would account for the charge correlations found experimentally. Our results establish 1T-NbSe$_2$ as a potential monolayer platform to explore correlated doped Mott physics in a frustrated lattice.

Unidirectional Kondo scattering in layered NbS2

Abstract:Crystalline defects can modify quantum interactions in solids, causing unintuitive, even favourable, properties such as quantum Hall effect or superconducting vortex pinning. Here we present another example of this notion - an unexpected unidirectional Kondo scattering in single crystals of 2H-NbS2. This manifests as a pronounced low-temperature enhancement in the out-of-plane resistivity and thermopower below 40 K, hidden for the in-plane charge transport. The anomaly can be suppressed by the c-axis-oriented magnetic field, but is unaffected by field applied along the planes. The magnetic moments originate from layers of 1T-NbS2, which inevitably form during the growth, undergoing a charge-density-wave reconstruction with each superlattice cell (David-star-shaped cluster of Nb atoms) hosting a localised spin. Our results demonstrate the unique and highly anisotropic response of a spontaneously formed Kondo lattice heterostructure, intercalated in a layered conductor.

Uniaxial Hybridization in the Quasi-One-dimensional Kondo Lattice CeCo2Ga8

Abstract:We report the electron dynamics of the recently discovered quasi-one-dimensional Kondo lattice compound CeCo2Ga8 by optical spectra measurements using polarized light. For an electric field along the c axis, the high-temperature Drude-like peak is found to split into two distinct components below the coherence temperature T*, including a narrower Drude-like peak at low frequencies characterizing the emergent heavy electron state with a large mass enhancement, and a midinfrared Lorentz-like peak originating from interband transitions across the hybridization gap. The splitting is, however, absent for an electric field along the perpendicular directions, suggesting that the hybridization only occurs along the c axis, although the high-temperature optical spectra from the background conduction electrons are isotropic. Our observations are in agreement with the resistivity data that show a broad maximum at around 20 K only along the c axis but which keep increasing with a lowering temperature below 50 K along the ab plane. Our work confirms the quasi-one-dimensional nature of the heavy electron physics in CeCo2Ga8 and establishes a direct correspondence between the bulk transport properties and microscopic electronic structures. It also pushes the previous observation of anisotropic coherence temperature in many heavy fermion compounds to an extreme situation and reveals the importance of intersite magnetic correlations beyond the local Kondo picture.
Self-Stacked 1T-1H Layers in 6R-NbSeTe and the Emergence of Charge and Magnetic Correlations Due to Ligand Disorder

Abstract:The emergence of correlated phenomena arising from the combination of 1T and 1H van der Waals layers is the focus of intense research. Here, we synthesize a self-stacked 6R phase in NbSeTe, showing perfect alternating 1T and 1H layers that grow coherently along the c-direction, as revealed by scanning transmission electron microscopy. Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy shows a mixed contribution of the trigonal and octahedral Nb bands to the Fermi level. Diffuse scattering reveals temperature-independent short-range charge fluctuations with propagation vector qCO = (0.25 0), derived from the condensation of a longitudinal mode in the 1T layer, while the long-range charge density wave is quenched by ligand disorder. Magnetization measurements suggest the presence of an inhomogeneous, short-range magnetic order, further supported by the absence of a clear phase transition in the specific heat. These experimental analyses in combination with ab initio calculations indicate that the ground state of 6R-NbSeTe is described by a statistical distribution of short-range charge-modulated and spin-correlated regions driven by ligand disorder. Our results demonstrate how natural 1T-1H self-stacked bulk heterostructures can be used to engineer emergent phases of matter.
Charge Density Wave and Electron-Phonon Interaction in Epitaxial Monolayer NbSe2 Films

Abstract:Understanding the interplay between superconductivity and charge-density wave (CDW) in NbSe2 is vital for both fundamental physics and future device applications. Here, combining scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy, we study the CDW phase in the monolayer NbSe2 films grown on various substrates of bilayer graphene (BLG), SrTiO3(111), and Al2O3(0001). It is found that the two stable CDW states of monolayer NbSe2 can coexist on NbSe2/BLG surface at liquid-nitrogen temperature. For the NbSe2/SrTiO3(111) sample, the unidirectional CDW regions own the kinks at +/- 41 meV and a wider gap at 4.2 K. It is revealed that the charge transfer from the substrates to the grown films will influence the configurations of the Fermi surface, and induce a 130 meV lift-up of the Fermi level with a shrink of the Fermi pockets in NbSe2/SrTiO3(111) compared with the NbSe2/BLG. Combining the temperature-dependent Raman experiments, we suggest that the electron-phonon coupling in monolayer NbSe2 dominates its CDW phase transition.

Abstract:We report on broadband dielectric spectroscopy on the one-dimensional semiconductor (NbSe4)3I. Below the structural phase transition close to 270 K we observe colossal dielectric constants with a frequency and temperature dependence very similar to what is observed in canonical charge-density wave systems. Guided by structural details we interpret this structural phase transition as driven by complex charge-order processes.

Abstract:The combination of nontrivial topology and charge density wave (CDW) has been proposed as a powerful resource for realizing novel quantum phenomena such as axion electrodynamics and the anomalous Hall effect. Hence, topological materials with CDW states attract great interest, yet they are still very rare, particularly in the 2D limit. Here, it is predicted that monolayer NbTe2 in its high‐symmetry 1T phase stabilized by anharmonicity at room temperature exhibits nontrivial topology sensitive to electronic interactions: it changes from a quantum spin Hall (QSH) state to a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) state when the Hubbard potential U exceeds a critical value. At low temperature, a 4 × 4 CDW order emerges and coexists with the nontrivial topology. Meanwhile, the critical U increases because CDW reduces density of states at Fermi level. More interestingly, in contrast to the high‐symmetry structure that actually is a topologically nontrivial metal, the CDW structure shows an insulating nontrivial gap either in the QSH or the QAH phase, indicating CDW is an effective means to modulate the topological state for developing new functions and devices. These discoveries establish NbTe2 as a promising candidate to explore exotic quantum states at the confluence of nontrivial topology, electronic correlation, and CDW. Coexisting charge density wave (CDW) and nontrivial topology is predicted in monolayer NbTe2. In its CDW phase, monolayer NbTe2 changes from a quantum spin Hall insulator to a quantum anomalous Hall insulator with increasing electronic correlations. This finding establishes NbTe2 as a promising candidate to explore exotic quantum states at the confluence of nontrivial topology, electronic correlation, and CDW.

Evidence for ground state coherence in a two-dimensional Kondo lattice

Abstract:Kondo lattices are ideal testbeds for the exploration of heavy-fermion quantum phases of matter. While our understanding of Kondo lattices has traditionally relied on complex bulk f-electron systems, transition metal dichalcogenide heterobilayers have recently emerged as simple, accessible and tunable 2D Kondo lattice platforms where, however, their ground state remains to be established. Here we present evidence of a coherent ground state in the 1T/1H-TaSe2 heterobilayer by means of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy at 340 mK. Our measurements reveal the existence of two symmetric electronic resonances around the Fermi energy, a hallmark of coherence in the spin lattice. Spectroscopic imaging locates both resonances at the central Ta atom of the charge density wave of the 1T phase, where the localized magnetic moment is held. Furthermore, the evolution of the electronic structure with the magnetic field reveals a non-linear increase of the energy separation between the electronic resonances. Aided by ab initio and auxiliary-fermion mean-field calculations, we demonstrate that this behavior is inconsistent with a fully screened Kondo lattice, and suggests a ground state with magnetic order mediated by conduction electrons. The manifestation of magnetic coherence in TMD-based 2D Kondo lattices enables the exploration of magnetic quantum criticality, Kondo breakdown transitions and unconventional superconductivity in the strict two-dimensional limit.

Abstract:The Mott state in 1T-TaS2 is predicted to host quantum spin liquids (QSLs). However, its insulating mechanism is controversial due to complications from interlayer coupling. Here, we study the charge transfer state in monolayer 1T-NbSe2, an electronic analogue to TaS2 exempt from interlayer coupling, using spectroscopic imaging scanning tunneling microscopy and first-principles calculations. Monolayer NbSe2 surprisingly displays two types of star of David (SD) motifs with different charge transfer gap sizes, which are interconvertible via temperature variation. In addition, bilayer 1T-NbSe2 shows a Mott collapse by interlayer coupling. Our calculation unveils that the two types of SDs possess distinct structural distortions, altering the effective Coulomb energies of the central Nb orbital. Our calculation suggests that the charge transfer gap, the same parameter for determining the QSL regime, is tunable with strain. Unveiling Charge-Density Wave, Superconductivity, and Their Competitive Nature in Two-Dimensional NbSe2

Abstract:Recently, charge-density wave (CDW) and superconductivity are observed to coexist in atomically thin metallic NbSe2. Lacking of knowledge on the structural details of CDW, however, prevents us to explore its interplay with superconductivity. Using first-principles calculations, we identify the ground state 3 × 3 CDW atomic structure of monolayer NbSe2, which is characterized by the formation of triangular Nb clusters and shows a scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM) image and Raman CDW modes in good agreement with experiments. We further demonstrate that from bulk to monolayer NbSe2, as the layer thickness decreases, the CDW order is gradually enhanced with rising energy gain and strengthened Fermi surface gapping, while superconductivity is weakened due to the increasingly reduced Fermi level density of states in the CDW state. These results well explain the observed opposite thickness dependencies of CDW and superconducting transition temperatures and uncover the nature of competitive interaction between the two collective orders in two-dimensional NbSe2.
Magnetic order and strongly-correlated effects in the one-dimensional Ising-Kondo lattice

Abstract:We investigate the magnetic order and related strongly-correlated effects in an one-dimensional Ising-Kondo lattice with transverse field. This model is the anisotropic limit of the conventional isotropic Kondo lattice model, in the sense that the itinerant electrons interact with the localized magnetic moments via only longitudinal Kondo exchange. Adopting the numerical density-matrix-renormalization group method, we map out the ground-state phase diagram in various parameter spaces. Depending on the Kondo coupling and filling number, three distinct phases, including a metallic paramagnetic, a metallic ferromagnetic, and a gapped spin-density wave phase, are obtained. The spin-density wave is characterized by an ordering wave vector which coincides with the nesting wave vector of the Fermi surface. This makes the corresponding magnetic transition a spin analog of the Peierls transition occurring in the one-dimensional metal. Moreover, by analyzing the momentum distribution function and charge correlation function, the conduction electrons are shown to behave like free spinless fermions in the ferromagnetic phase. We finally discuss the effect of the repulsive Hubbard interaction between conduction electrons. Our work enriches the Kondo physics and deepens the current understanding of the heavy fermion compounds.

Alternating-Chiral Charge Density Waves and Hybrid Ferrimagnetism in Monolayered NbTe2

Abstract:Intertwining of different quantum degrees of freedom manifests exotic quantum phenomena in many-body systems, especially in reduced dimensionality. Here we show that monolayered NbTe2 serves as an ideal platform where lattice, charge, and spin degrees of freedom manifest cooperatively, leading to a new and threading order of chirality. By using spin-polarized scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy, we reveal that the root19 * root19 phase of NbTe2 is encoded with both alternating-chiral atomic displacements and charge density waves, characterized by two chiral units of opposite handedness within the reconstructed cell. We show unambiguous evidence for emergent spin polarizations spreading over the primitive cell, with the magnetization orientation synchronized with alternating handedness of chiral order. Our first-principles studies identify the origin of intertwined orders being correlation driven, with the threading order of chirality emerging when the on-site Coulomb repulsion exceeds a critical value. The spin ordering is further shown to be of hybrid ferrimagnetic nature, contributed by the itinerant electrons and localized d-orbitals. Collectively, these findings expand the realm of chiral order in correlated electron systems, and facilitate an appealing platform for chiral spintronic and related applications.

Electron-phonon Coupling and the Coexistence of Superconductivity and Charge-Density Wave in Monolayer NbSe2

Abstract:Monolayer $2H\text{\ensuremath{-}}{\mathrm{NbSe}}_{2}$ has recently been shown to be a two-dimensional superconductor, with a coexisting charge-density wave (CDW). As both phenomena are intimately related to electron-lattice interaction, a natural question is how superconductivity and CDW are interrelated through electron-phonon coupling (EPC), which is important to the understanding of two-dimensional superconductivity. This work investigates the superconductivity of monolayer ${\mathrm{NbSe}}_{2}$ in CDW phase using the anisotropic Migdal-Eliashberg formalism based on first-principles calculations. The mechanism of the competition between and coexistence of the superconductivity and CDW is studied in detail by analyzing EPC. It is found that the intrapocket scattering is related to superconductivity, leading to almost constant value of superconducting gaps on parts of the Fermi surface. The interpocket scattering is found to be responsible for CDW, leading to partial or full band gaps on the remaining Fermi surface. A recent experiment indicates that there is transitioning from regular superconductivity in thin-film ${\mathrm{NbSe}}_{2}$ to two-gap superconductivity in the bulk, which is shown here to have its origin in the extent of Fermi surface gapping of $\mathbf{K}$ and ${\mathbf{K}}^{\ensuremath{'}}$ pockets induced by CDW. Overall blue shifts of the phonons and sharp decrease of Eliashberg spectrum are found when the CDW forms.
NbSe$_{2}$'s charge density wave collapse in the (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_{2}$)$_{2}$ misfit layer compound

Abstract:Misfit layer compounds, heterostructures composed by a regular alternating stacking of rocksalt monochalcogenides bilayers and few-layer transition metal dichalchogenides, are an emergent platform to investigate highly doped transition metal dichalcogenides. Among them, (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_2$)$_2$ displays Ising superconductivity, while the presence of a charge density wave (CDW) in the material is still under debate. Here, by using polarized Raman spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we show that NbSe$_2$ undergoes a doping-driven collapse of the CDW ordering within the misfit, and no signature of the CDW is detected down to 8~K. We provide a complete experimental and theoretical description of the lattice dynamics of this misfit compound. We show that the vibrational properties are obtained from those of the two subunits, namely the LaSe unit and the NbSe$_2$ bilayer, in the presence of a suitable field-effect doping, and then highlight the 2D nature of the lattice dynamics of NbSe$_2$ within the (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_2$)$_2$ 3D structure.

Abstract:Abstract Understanding Mott insulators and charge density waves (CDW) is critical for both fundamental physics and future device applications. However, the relationship between these two phenomena remains unclear, particularly in systems close to two-dimensional (2D) limit. In this study, we utilize scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy to investigate monolayer 1T-NbSe 2 to elucidate the energy of the Mott upper Hubbard band (UHB), and reveal that the spin-polarized UHB is spatially distributed away from the dz 2 orbital at the center of the CDW unit. Moreover, the UHB shows a √3 × √3 R30° periodicity in addition to the typically observed CDW pattern. Furthermore, a pattern similar to the CDW order is visible deep in the Mott gap, exhibiting CDW without contribution of the Mott Hubbard band. Based on these findings in monolayer 1T-NbSe 2 , we provide novel insights into the relation between the correlated and collective electronic structures in monolayer 2D systems.

Topological Kondo semimetals emulated in hetero-bilayer transition metal dichalcogenides

Abstract:The moiré structure of AB-stacked $\rm{MoTe_2/WSe_2}$ represents a natural platform to realize Kondo lattice models, due to the discrepancy of the bandwidth between the individual layers. Here, we study this system at the commensurate filling of $\nu_{\rm tot}=2$. Our focus is on the $1+1$ filling setting of $\nu_{\rm Mo} =\nu_{\rm W}=1$, which enables a Kondo lattice description. We find a Kondo semimetal due to the sizable intra-orbital hopping among the electrons in the $\rm{MoTe_2}$ layer. The Kondo-driven (emergent) flat band is naturally pinned to the Fermi energy. When combined with the inherent topology of the electronic structure, a topological Kondo semimetal phase ensues. We calculate the valley Hall response and, due to the breaking of inversion symmetry, also identify a spontaneous Hall effect. There is a Berry curvature dodecapole, which leads to a fourth-order spontaneous Hall effect in the perturbative regime of the electric field that is further amplified in the non-perturbative regime. As such, the system provides a tunable setting to simulate topological Kondo semimetals. Finally, we discuss the pathways that connect the physics realized here to the Weyl Kondo semimetals and their proximate phases that have been advanced in recent years in topological Kondo lattice models and materials.

Abstract:Quantum spin liquids (QSLs) are in a quantum disordered state that is highly entangled and has fractional excitations. As a highly sought-after state of matter, QSLs were predicted to host spinon excitations and to arise in frustrated spin systems with large quantum fluctuations. Here we report on the experimental observation and theoretical modeling of QSL signatures in monolayer 1T-NbSe2, which is a newly emerging two-dimensional material that exhibits both charge-density-wave (CDW) and correlated insulating behaviors. By using scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy (STM/STS), we confirm the presence of spin fluctuations in monolayer 1T-NbSe2 by observing the Kondo resonance as monolayer 1T-NbSe2 interacts with metallic monolayer 1H-NbSe2. Subsequent STM/STS imaging of monolayer 1T-NbSe2 at the Hubbard band energy further reveals a long-wavelength charge modulation, in agreement with the spinon modulation expected for QSLs. By depositing manganese-phthalocyanine (MnPc) molecules with spin S = 3/2 onto monolayer 1T-NbSe2, new STS resonance peaks emerge at the Hubbard band edges of monolayer 1T-NbSe2. This observation is consistent with the spinon Kondo effect induced by a S = 3/2 magnetic impurity embedded in a QSL. Taken together, these experimental observations indicate that monolayer 1T-NbSe2 is a new promising QSL material.
