Abstract:Mercury (Hg) could be microbially methylated to the bioaccumulative neurotoxin methylmercury (MeHg), raising health concerns. Understanding the methylation of various Hg species is thus critical in predicting the MeHg risk. Among the known Hg species, mercury sulfide (HgS) is the largest Hg reservoir in the lithosphere and has long been considered to be highly inert. However, with advances in the analytical methods of nanoparticles, HgS nanoparticles (HgS NPs) have recently been detected in various environmental matrices or organisms. Furthermore, pioneering laboratory studies have reported the high bioavailability of HgS NPs. The formation, presence, and transformation (e.g., methylation) of HgS NPs are intricately related to several environmental factors, especially dissolved organic matter (DOM). The complexity of the behavior of HgS NPs and the heterogeneity of DOM prevent us from comprehensively understanding and predicting the risk of HgS NPs. To reveal the role of HgS NPs in Hg biogeochemical cycling, research needs should focus on the following aspects: the formation pathways, the presence, and the environmental behaviors of HgS NPs impacted by the dominant influential factor of DOM. We thus summarized the latest progress in these aspects and proposed future research priorities, e.g., developing the detection techniques of HgS NPs and probing HgS NPs in various matrices, further exploring the interactions between DOM and HgS NPs. Besides, as most of the previous studies were conducted in laboratories, our current knowledge should be further refreshed through field observations, which would help to gain better insights into predicting the Hg risks in natural environment.
Synthesis of MoS2 nanosheets for mercury speciation analysis by HPLC-UV-HG-AFS

Abstract:Mercury species have aroused wide concern in the past several decades due to their high toxicity. However, it is still difficult to detect ultra-trace mercury species due to their biochemical transformation in complex samples. To establish a simpler and more sensitive method for pre-concentration and determination of trace mercury species, molybdenum disulfide (MoS2) nanosheets with sulfur-rich characteristics and enlarged interlayer spacing were prepared by a hydrothermal method coupled with a sonication-assisted liquid exfoliation method and acted as solid-phase extraction adsorbent. The nano-MoS2 had high adsorption capacity, fast adsorption rate and excellent selectivity towards mercury ions (Hg2+), methyl mercury (MeHg+) and ethyl mercury (EtHg+) in a wide pH range and complex matrices. And it could be easily regenerated by 4 mol L-1 HCl and reused several times. After optimizing HPLC-UV-HG-AFS conditions, a great linearity (1.0-10.0 g L-1, R-2 = 0.999 for Hg2+, MeHg+ and EtHg+), lower detection limits (0.017, 0.037 and 0.021 ng mL(-1) for Hg2+, MeHg+ and EtHg+, respectively), relative standard deviations (<5%) and addition recoveries of the samples within 82.75-113.38% were observed. In summary, trace inorganic and organic mercury species in environmental and biological samples could be selectively enriched by the prepared nano-MoS2 and efficiently seperated and detected by HPLC-UV-HG-AFS. The present study will help provide a better strategy for environmental monitoring and health assessment of mercury pollutants.
Microbial diversity and abundance of Hg related genes from water, sediment and soil the Colombian amazon ecosystems impacted by artisanal and small-scale gold mining

Abstract:The Amazon region abounds in precious mineral resources including gold, copper, iron, and coltan. Artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) poses a severe risk in this area due to considerable mercury release into the surrounding ecosystems. Nonetheless, the impact of mercury on both the overall microbiota and the microbial populations involved in mercury transformation is not well understood. In this study we evaluated microbial diversity in samples of soil, sediment and water potentially associated with mercury contamination in two localities (Taraira and Tarapacá) in the Colombian Amazon Forest. To this end, we characterized the bacterial community structure and mercury-related functions in samples from sites with a chronic history of mercury contamination which today have different levels of total mercury content. We also determined mercury bioavailability and mobility in the samples with the highest THg and MeHg levels (up to 43.34 and 0.049 mg kg −1 , respectively, in Taraira). Our analysis of mercury speciation showed that the immobile form of mercury predominated in soils and sediments, probably rendering it unavailable to microorganisms. Despite its long-term presence, mercury did not appear to alter the microbial community structure or composition, which was primarily shaped by environmental and physicochemical factors. However, an increase in the relative abundance of mer A genes was detected in polluted sediments from Taraira. Several Hg-responsive taxa in soil and sediments were detected in sites with high levels of THg, including members of the Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria , Firmicutes and Chloroflexi phyla. The results suggest that mercury contamination at the two locations sampled may select mercury-adapted bacteria carrying the merA gene that could be used in bioremediation processes for the region.

Abstract:Selenium-inhibited monomethylmercury (MeHg) production is an attractive strategy for mitigating the risks of MeHg exposure. However, it is poorly understood the methylation potential of mercury selenide (HgSe) particles during their aging in soils and sediments. Net MeHg production in three floodplain soils amended with different geochemical species of mercury selenides, i.e., dissolved inorganic mercury freshly mixed with selenite (Hg(II)+Se(IV)), HgSe nanoparticles (45.2 ± 0.5 nm) and microparticles (> 1 μm) is examined. Among mercury types, the methylation from nanoparticulate HgSe was similar to (0.05 - 0.5 % vs. 0.1 - 0.4 %, yellow brown soil) or 12.9 - 21.0 times lower (0.02 - 0.1 vs. 0.6 - 1.5 %, black soil) than that from Hg(II)+Se(IV); however, net MeHg production from HgSe nanoparticles (0.02 - 0.5 %) was 1.9 - 15.5 times greater than HgSe microparticles (< 0.05 %) in all soils. Furthermore, net MeHg production from nanoparticulate HgSe varied significantly among soil types, attributable to differences in soil organic matter contents (2.4-5.8%) and microbial methylator community among soils. These results address the importance of geochemical intermediates of mercury selenide precipitation reactions and soil properties in MeHg production, and develop Se-based remediation strategy to minimize negative effects of MeHg on environmental and human health.
Mercury Transformations in Resuspended Contaminated Sediment Controlled by Redox Conditions, Chemical Speciation and Sources of Organic Matter

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) contaminated sediments can be significant sources of Hg in aquatic ecosystems and, through re-emission processes, to the atmosphere. Transformation and release of Hg may be enhanced by various sediment perturbation processes, and controlling biogeochemical factors largely remain unclear. We investigated how rates of Hg transformations in pulp-fiber enriched sediment contaminated by Hg from chlor-alkali industry were controlled by (i) transient redox-changes in sulfur and iron chemistry, (ii) the chemical speciation and solubility of Hg, and (iii) the sources and characteristics of organic matter (OM). Sediment-bottom water microcosm systems were exposed to four combinations of air and nitrogen gas for a total time of 24 h. The treatments were: 24 h N-2, 0.5 h air + 23.5 h N-2, 4 h air + 20 h N-2 and 24 h of air exposure. As a result of these treatments, microcosms spanned a wide range of redox potential, as reflected by the dissolved sulfide concentration range of <= 0.3-97 mu M. Four different chemical species of inorganic divalent Hg (Hg-II) and methyl mercury (MeHg), enriched in different Hg isotope tracers, were added to the microcosms: 201 Hg(NO3)(2)(aq), Hg-202(II) adsorbed to OM (Hg-202(II)-OM(ads)), Hg-198(II) as microcrystalline metacinnabar (beta-(HgS)-Hg-198(s)) and (MeHgCl)-Hg-204(aq). Microcosm systems were composed of bottom water mixed with sediment taken at 0-2, 0-5 and 0-10 cm depth intervals. The composition of OM varied with sediment depth such that compared to deeper sediment, the 0-2 cm depth-interval had a 2-fold higher contribution of labile OM originating from algal and terrestrial inputs, serving as metabolic electron-donors for microorganisms. The potential methylation rate constant (k(meth)) of Hg tracers and net formation of ambient MeHg (MeHg/THg molar ratio) increased up to 50% and 400%, respectively at intermediate oxidative conditions, likely because of an observed 2-fold increase in sulfate concentration stimulating the activity of sulfate reducing bacteria with a capability of methylating Hg-II. Due to differences in Hg-II water-sediment partitioning, k(meth) varied by a factor of 11-70 for the different isotope-enriched Hg tracers. The chemical form of Hg-II was a major controlling factor for k(meth) and its response to the resuspension-oxidation of the system. The beta-(HgS)-Hg-198(s) tracer had the lowest k(meth) and it was mainly constrained by redox-driven Hg-II solubility. The Hg-202(II)-OM(ads) tracer showed an intermediate value on k(meth). It was controlled by both Hg-II solubility and availability of electron donors and acceptors, regulating bacterial activity. The Hg-201(NO3)(2)(aq) tracer had the highest value on k(meth) which was limited mainly by bacterial activity. The k(meth) was up to a factor of 3 higher in the 0-2 cm sediment depth-interval than in 0-5 and 0-10 cm intervals due to a larger contribution of labile OM in the 0-2 cm sediment. Reduction of Hg-II to Hg-0 followed by volatilization exclusively occurred at high sulfidic conditions in the top 0-2 cm sediment. Aromatic moieties of terrestrial OM, present mainly in the top sediment, is suggested to control the reduction of Hg-II. The Hg-0 volatilization rate constant for the Hg-202(II)-OM (ads) tracer exceeded that for beta-(HgS)-Hg-198(s) by one order of magnitude. Our results suggest that contaminated sediments posing a high risk for reactivation of legacy Hg following transient redox resuspension events are characterized by depletion of sulfate in the sediment porewater prior to resuspension, predominance of Hg-II species with solubility exceeding that of crystalline beta-HgS(s), and conditions promoting in situ formation and/ or import of labile OM from algal and terrestrial sources. The toxic legacy of artisanal and informal mining: XRF and gis analysis of soil contamination by Hg, Pb and As in the Secocha annex, Camaná, Peru

Abstract:Hg, used as the main input in the gold amalgamation process in artisanal mining, along with lead Pb and As present in the toxic waste resulting from mining activity, cause serious effects on the environment and human health, as it occurs in the Secocha annex (Camaná, Peru). The objectives of the present study were to determine the concentrations of Hg, Pb, and As in the soil of the Secocha annex, evaluate the level of contamination of the site, determine the spatial distribution of contamination and the concentrations of the evaluated elements, and determine the origin of these contaminants. To achieve these objectives, satellite imagery, field sampling, X-ray fluorescence techniques, soil quality environmental regulations, geo-accumulation indices (Igeo), and geographic information system techniques were used. The results revealed maximum concentrations of 350 and 176.6 mg/kg for Hg and Pb, respectively. Of the 72 soil samples collected, the concentrations of Hg located within the urban/industrial area, where gold recovery activities are carried out, exceeded environmental regulations to a greater extent. In turn, the calculated Igeo revealed extreme soil contamination (5 < Igeo) due to the presence of Hg in most of the study area (95%), followed by moderate to heavy contamination (2 < Igeo < 3) due to the presence of Pb and As (0.5 and 5%, respectively). To reduce contamination and the concentrations of the evaluated elements, it is recommended to carry out studies to reuse inputs, change gold processing methodologies, and/or relocate the generated waste.

Anomalous Gold Concentrations in Hypersaline Wetland Sediments (Laguna Honda, South Spain) Caused by Nanoparticles Used in Agricultural Practices: Environmental Transformation

Abstract:Illite-rich sediments from the Laguna Honda wetland, an eutrophicated hypersaline wetland with waters enriched in Mg and Ca surrounded by olive groves in the Guadalquivir Basin River (South Spain), are polluted by elevated concentrations of gold (up to 21.9 ppm) due to agricultural practices. The highest gold contents appear in the shore sediments of the lake, where up to 20 μm homoaggregates of fused gold nanoparticles (AuNp) are found. Small nanoaggregates of up to six fused gold nanoparticles and very few isolated nanoparticles around 1 nm in size can also be observed to form heteroaggregates of AuNp-mica, especially in the deeper sediments in the central part of the wetland, where Au concentrations are lower (up to 1.89 ppm). The high nanoparticle concentration caused by the inappropriate application of pesticides favors nanoparticle collision in the wetland's Mg- and Ca-rich waters and the fast coagulation and deposition of Au homoaggregates in the gold-rich shore sediment of the lake. The interaction of gold nanoparticles with the abundant illite particles in the wetland's hypersaline waters promotes the simultaneous formation of low-density Au-illite heteroaggregates, which are transported and deposited in the less-rich-in-gold sediments of the central part of the lake. The small sizes of the isolated AuNp and AuNp-fused contacts of the aggregates suggest modifications in the original nanoparticles involving dissolution processes. The presence of bacterial communities resistant to heavy metal stress (Luteolibacter and Maricaulis), as well as the activity of sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) and particularly sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (SOB) communities from the shore sediments, favored the high-Eh and low-pH conditions adequate for the destabilization and transport of AuNp.

Abstract:The contribution of smelting of nonferrous metals to heavy metals in surface soil have become increasingly important over the past decade. In this study, the distribution of heavy metals around an abandoned mercury-bearing waste recovery enterprise were investigated. Soil (14) and plant (18) samples were collected in the surrounding area. The total concentration of heavy metals and methyl mercury content were measured by ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS. The results show that the average contents of Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and As in all soil samples are higher than the second-level values of Soil environmental quality-Risk control standard for soil contamination of development land (GB 36600-2018). Hg in the leaves ranged from 0.003 to 0.174 mg kg-1. Besides, the Pearson correlation analysis results indicate that Hg has a different environmental behavior compared to the other heavy metal under certain environmental or geographical conditions. But the mantel test statistical analysis results show that the Cr (P < 0.01), Cu, Pb, and Fe (P < 0.05) in the soil may have similar pollution sources with carbonate-bound mercury and iron-manganese oxide-bound mercury. The Hg concentrations show no correlation among plant leaves and soil, but significantly influenced by the distance and wind direction. These findings suggest that Hg in plant leaves may be derived from the deposition of atmospheric mercury from secondary mercury plant. The results will supplement those for relevant policy making for mercury-bearing waste recovery enterprises to improve urban environmental quality and human health.

Abstract:Artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM), an increasingly prevalent activity in South America, generates mercury-contaminated tailings that are often disposed of in the environment, leading to the introduction of mercury into ecosystems and the food web, where it bioaccumulates. Therefore, studying the geochemical processes involved in the desorption and dissolution of mercury in these tailings is essential for critical risk evaluations in the short and long term. For this purpose, sequential extraction procedures (SEPs) can be useful because they help to identify the phases to which Hg is associated, although they also have limitations such as a lack of selectivity and specificity. In this work, we propose a modified four-step SEP: exchangeable mercury (F1), oxidizable mercury (F2), mercury bound to Fe oxides (F3), and strongly bound mercury (F4). To test this adapted sequential extraction method, we evaluated the Hg contamination in mercury-contaminated tailings of the Amazon basin. The results revealed a total mercury concentration of 103 ± 16 mg·kg−1 in the tailings, with a significant portion in F1 (28% of the total), where Hg was bioavailable. The large Hg concentration in F3 (36%) suggested that Fe oxides likely contribute to mercury retention. Together, the SEP results emphasize the urgent need for improved surveillance of gold mining activities and responsible tailings management practices to mitigate environmental contamination and safeguard the health of the Amazon ecosystem.

Abstract:The extensive extraction activity of mercury ores in Asturias (northwest Spain), also rich in As and Sb, has impacted the Nalón river estuary. The objective of this research was to assess the historical evolution of As-Hg-Sb accumulation in the salt marsh sediments of this area. For this purpose, sediment cores were collected from two different salt marshes (eastern and western river banks) in the estuarine environment to evaluate the degree of anthropogenic enrichment and the geochronology of As-Hg-Sb accumulation. Core subsampling was performed by cutting 2-cm-thick slices of sediments. The subsamples were then analysed for several physical and chemical parameters. Sedimentation rate was assessed by measuring short-lived radionuclides (excess 210Pb and 137Cs). Pre-mining levels of As-Hg-Sb were observed at core depths below 50 cm. In the less extended salt marsh (eastern river bank), maximum As-Hg-Sb concentrations of 87.48, 3.66, and 5.75 μg·g−1, respectively, were found at the core top as a consequence of long-term mining activity in the area. The vertical distribution of As-Hg-Sb was influenced by the single-point contamination sources, whereas grain-size variability and diagenetic remobilisation did not seem affected. Geochronological measurements showed that the depositional fluxes of As-Hg-Sb were influenced by anthropogenic input after 1900, when mining activity in the area was most intense. Hg mining ceased in 1969; however, the corresponding core profiles did not show a drastic decreasing trend in element fluxes, implying that the river drainage basin retains some “memory” of contamination which affects riverine sediments. A preliminary gross estimation of total As-Hg-Sb “trapped” in the Nalón river salt marsh sediments amounted to approximately 18.7, 1.0, and 0.7 t, respectively. These morphological structures suffer erosive processes, thus representing a potential source of these elements associated with sediments; consequently, management conservation and monitoring of salt marshes should be taken into consideration from this environmental point of view.

Abstract:Adult male rabbits, wearing a plastic collar to prevent coprophagy, excreted soft faeces during the first half of the light phase, starting at about the time the light switched on at 0600. While soft faeces were being excreted, food intake was reduced considerably in collared as well as in non-collared animals. Rate of passage of gastrointestinal contents in the rabbit was extremely high. Chromic oxide appeared in the faeces 4-5 h after it had been ingested in pelleted food. Coprophagy had no effect upon the rate of passage of gastrointestinal contents, and chromic oxide passed through at the same rate, whether it was incorporated in soft faeces or in pelleted diet.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is one of the most toxic global pollutants of continuing concern, posing a severe threat to human health and wildlife. Due to its mobility, Hg is easily transported through the atmosphere and directly deposited onto water, sediments and soils or incorporated in biota. In groundwater, Hg concentrations can be influenced by either geogenic or anthropogenic sources, causing critical health effects such as damage to the respiratory and nervous systems. The geogenic sources of Hg include rocks and minerals containing Hg (cinnabar, organic-rich shales, and sulfide-rich volcanic) and geothermal fluids. The anthropogenic Hg sources include the combustion of fossil fuels, gold mining, chemical discharges from dental preparation, laboratory activities and legacy sites. In groundwater, the average background concentration of Hg is < 0.01 μg/L. Mercury can be mobilized into groundwater from geogenic or anthropogenic sources due to changes in redox potential (Eh), with concentrations reaching above the WHO drinking water standard of 1 μg/L. Under reducing conditions, microbial activity facilitates the reductive dissolution of FeOOH, causing the release of sorbed Hg 2+ into groundwater. The released Hg 2+ may be reduced to Hg 0 by either dissolved organic matter or Fe 2+ . The stability of Hg species (Hg 0 , Hg 2 2+ , Hg 2+ , MeHg) in groundwater is controlled by Eh and pH. While high Eh and low pH conditions can mobilize Hg from the solid into aqueous phases, the soil binding ability can sequestrate the mobilized Hg via adsorption of Hg 2+ by goethite, hematite, manganese oxides, hydrous ferric oxides, or organic matter restricting it from leaching into groundwater. During groundwater contamination, remediation using nanomaterials such as pumice-supported nanocomposite zero-valent iron, brass shavings, polyaniline-Fe3O4-silver diethyldithiocarbamate, and CoMoO/γ-Al2O3 has been documented. These promising emerging technologies utilize the principle of adsorption to remove up to 99.98 % of Hg from highly contaminated groundwater. This study presents an overview of groundwater contamination, remediation, complex biogeochemical processes, and a hydrogeochemical conceptual model concerning Hg's mobility, fate, and transport.

Industries with significant Hg emissions, including artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM)-789.2 Mg year-1, coal combustion-564.1 Mg year-1, waste combustion-316.1 Mg year-1, cement production-224.5 Mg year-1, and non-ferrous metals smelting-204.1 Mg year-1, use oxidants and adsorbents capture Hg from waste streams. Oxidizing agents such as O3, Cl2, HCl, CaBr2, CaCl2, and NH4Cl oxidize Hg0 to Hg2+ for easier adsorption. To functionalize adsorbents, carbonaceous ones use S, SO2, and Na2S, metal-based adsorbents use dimercaprol, and polymer-based adsorbents are grafted with acrylonitrile and hydroxylamine hydrochloride. Adsorption capacities span 0.2-85.6 mg g-1 for carbonaceous, 0.5-14.8 mg g-1 for metal-based, and 168.1-1216 mg g-1 for polymer-based adsorbents. Assessing Hg contamination in soils and sediments uses bioindicators and stable isotopes. Remediation approaches include heat treatment, chemical stabilization and immobilization, and phytoremediation techniques when contamination exceeds thresholds. Achieving a substantially Hg-free ecosystem remains a formidable challenge, chiefly due to the ASGM industry, policy gaps, and Hg persistence. Nevertheless, improvements in adsorbent technologies hold potential.
Assessing mercury pollution at a primary ore site with both ancient and industrial mining and smelting activities

Abstract:The Minamata Convention on Mercury has mandated a renewed global effort to tackle Hg pollution. The present study evaluates Hg pollution at a primary Hg production site exploited since the Qin Dynasty (200s BC), with intensive industrial scale production over the past four decades. This single location accounts for over 95% total Hg production in China in recent years. To assess the environmental risk and effectiveness of recently implemented control measures, we collected 90 soil samples, 60 plant tissue samples, 47 sediment samples, and 47 river water samples from the site and its vicinity. A site-specific conceptual site model was established based on the sources, migration transformation pathways of Hg pollutant and its exposure scenarios. The maximum soil Hg concentration reached 10,451 mg kg-1, posing a high health and ecological risk. Vegetable and crop Hg concentrations outside the site reached 0.23 mg kg-1 in rice grains and 4.24 mg kg-1 in green onion. The highest health risk, with a hazard quotient of 130.66, was observed in the Ore Storage Site, which reduced to 17.14 when Hg bioavailability was considered. Risk control measures implemented in recent years included a stormwater collection system and capping of the tailing pond area with clean imported soil. These measures were generally successful; however, Hg in the tailings were found to be contaminating the imported surficial soil due to rainfall saturation and upward migration, suggesting a need for long-term post remedial site monitoring and maintenance. We also found that mining and smelting activities have contaminated a 6 km stretch of a nearby river, with sediment Hg concentrations reaching 2819 mg kg-1, and water column concentrations reaching 193.21 ng L-1. The sediment and water concentrations are highly correlated (R2 = 0.78), suggesting that, with risk control measures in place, a reservoir of Hg in polluted river sediment is now driving pollution in the water column. This work demonstrates that primary Hg mining has caused widespread and serious soil and water pollution. Risk control measures can reduce human health and ecological risks, but robust monitoring and maintenance are required for remediation to be effective in the long-term.

Abstract:Particulate organic matter (POM), composed of fine root fragments and other organic debris, is an important fraction of soil organic matter which can affect the fate of nanoparticles and influence their performance in nanoparticle-based remediation technologies due to aggregation. Effects of POM are not well studied compared with those of dissolved organic matter. In this research, POM was extracted from black soil by sieving, and heteroaggregation of selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) with POM and consequences for elemental mercury (Hg0) immobilization were investigated. It was found that low concentrations of more negatively charged POM (0-60 mg L-1) inhibited homoaggregation as well as heteroaggregation with SeNPs which had a lower negative charge through electrostatic repulsion. In the presence of high concentrations of POM (80-100 mg L-1), SeNPs were more likely to attach to POM with more Hg0 remaining in the POM since a larger concentration of nanoparticles would lead to more effective collisions. However, Hg0 immobilization efficiency using SeNPs was not significantly influenced by the addition of POM. This work is helpful to further understand the nanoparticle's behaviour in the environment and consequences for toxic metal remediation.

Abstract:In this work, the electronic and molecular structure, as well as the morphology, of innovative nanostructured materials whose optical properties respond to the presence of heavy metals in water samples was investigated. In particular, the here discussed silver nanoparticles (NPs) stabilized by a hydrophilic ligand (sodium 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate, 3MPS) are able to reveal the presence of mercury ions at ppm levels. The sensitivity of the proposed nanosensor to Hg(II) in 1–5 ppm range was ascertained by optical tests; then, the local chemistry and electronic structure of the nanostructured coordination compounds made of functionalized silver nanoparticles (NPs) and metal ions, and their correlation with the resulting nanoaggregates' shape and morphology, were investigated by state-of-the-art synchrotron radiation (SR)-induced spectroscopies and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). In particular, SR-induced X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) measurements allowed us to gather complementary information about the silver–mercury interaction, which is only partially mediated by the negatively charged 3MPS ligand, different from what was observed for analogous nanosensors applied to other bivalent heavy metal ions, for example, Co(II) and Ni(II). Abstract:Silver and gold mineralization in epithermal veins was discovered during the 1600s in the Mineral de Pozos area, north-central Mexico. The main period of mining was between 1880 and 1926. Exploitation in the district is estimated at 1,200,000 tons of ore, with average grades of 1.35 kg/ton Ag, and 8.5 g/ton Au. Tailings were deposited (less than 1.2 million tons) along the main creek in the area, under semi-desert conditions, and widely dispersed by fluvial water during rainy seasons. Concentrations of Cr, Co, and Ni in rocks, sediments, and tailings are below average concentrations in the Earth's crust, but Cu, Zn, As, Cd, and Pb concentrations are above crustal averages. Concentrations of As and Pb in groundwater (As = 0.011 to 0.090 mg/l; and Pb = 0.025 to 0.035 mg/l) generally exceed the World Health Organization (WHO) standards for drinking water. Results from humidity cell and leaching column experiments indicate that the potential for leaching As is relatively low (average <0.050 mg/l); Pb concentrations in the experiments range from 0.001 to 0.180 mg/l (average of 0.010 mg/l), and Zn is relatively concentrated (up to 80 mg/l). These results suggest that, given the relatively small amount of mine tailings, the As and Pb concentrations in groundwater may be mostly derived from natural sources rather than from mine waste. The high concentration of Zn in tailings and leachates (up to 306 mg/kg and 80 mg/l, respectively), suggest that zinc could be leaching from the tailings; however, under geochemical conditions of the shallow aquifer (near neutral pH, oxidizing conditions, high Fe content), Zn in solution is mostly controlled by adsorption onto Fe-oxyhydroxides.

Abstract:Mercury is a highly toxic element present in water, soil, air, and biota. Anthropogenic activities, such as burning fossil fuels, mining, and deforestation, contribute to the presence and mobilization of mercury between environmental compartments. Although current research on mercury pathways has advanced our understanding of the risks associated with human exposure, limited information exists for remote areas with high diversity of fauna, flora, and indigenous communities. This study aims to deepen our understanding of the presence of total mercury in water, sediments, and fish, within aquatic ecosystems of two indigenous territories: Gomataon (Waorani Nationality) and Sinangoé (Ai ́Cofán Nationality) in the Ecuadorian Amazon. Our findings indicate that, for most fish (91.5%), sediment (100%) and water (95.3%) samples, mercury levels fall under international limits. For fish, no significant differences in mercury levels were detected between the two communities. However, eight species exceeded recommended global limits, and one surpassed the threshold according to Ecuadorian legislation. Piscivore and omnivore fish exhibited the highest concentrations of total mercury among trophic guilds. Only one water sample from each community's territory exceeded these limits. Total mercury in sediments exhibited greater concentrations in Gomataon than Sinangoé. Greater levels of mercury in sediments were associated with the occurrence of total organic carbon. Considering that members of the communities consume the analyzed fish, an interdisciplinary approach, including isotopic analysis, methylmercury sampling in humans, and mercury monitoring over time, is imperative for a detailed risk assessment of mercury exposure in Amazonian communities.

Abstract:Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are among the most widely used metal-based engineered nanomaterials in biomedicine and nanotechnology, and account for >50 % of global nanomaterial consumer products. The increasing use of AgNPs potentially causes marine ecosystem changes; however, the environmental impacts of man-made AgNPs are still poorly studied. This study reports for the first time that man-made AgNPs intruded into cold seeps , which are important marine ecosystems where hydrogen sulfide , methane, and other hydrocarbon-rich fluid seepage occur. Using a combination of electron microscopy, geochemical and metagenomic analyses, we found that in the cold seeps with high AgNPs concentrations, the relative abundance of genes associated with anaerobic oxidation of methane (AOM) was lower, while those related to the sulfide oxidizing and sulfate reducing were higher. This suggests that AgNPs can stimulate the proliferation of sulfate-reducing and sulfide-oxidizing bacteria, likely due to the effects of activating repair mechanisms of the cells against the toxicant. A reaction of AgNPs with hydrogen sulfide to form silver sulfide could also effectively reduce the amount of available sulfate in local ecosystems, which is generally used as the AOM oxidant. These novel findings indicate that man-made AgNPs may be involved in the biogeochemical cycles of sulfur and carbon in nature, and their potential effects on the releasing of methane from the marine methane seeps should not be ignored in both scientific and environmental aspects.
