Abstract:Concentrations of total Hg (T-Hg) were measured in mine waste, stream water, soil and moss samples collected from the Tongren area, Guizhou, China to identify potential Hg contamination to local environments, which has resulted from artisanal Hg mining. Mine waste contained high T-Hg concentrations, ranging from 1.8 to 900mg/kg. High concentrations of Hg were also found in the leachates of mine waste, confirming that mine waste contains significant water-soluble Hg compounds. Total Hg distribution patterns in soil profiles showed that top soil is contaminated with Hg, which has been derived from atmospheric deposition. Data suggest that organic matter plays an important role in the binding and transport of Hg in soil. Elevated T-Hg concentrations (5.9–44mg/kg) in moss samples suggest that atmospheric deposition is the dominant source of Hg to local terrestrial ecosystems. Concentrations of T-Hg were highly elevated in stream water samples, varying from 92 to 2300ng/L. Particulate Hg in water constituted a large proportion of the T-Hg and played a major role in Hg transport. Methyl–Hg (Me–Hg) concentrations in the water samples was as high as 7.9ng/L. Data indicate that Hg contamination is dominantly from artisanal Hg mining in the study area, but the extent of Hg contamination is dependent on the mining history and the scale of artisanal Hg mining.

Abstract:Adult male rabbits, wearing a plastic collar to prevent coprophagy, excreted soft faeces during the first half of the light phase, starting at about the time the light switched on at 0600. While soft faeces were being excreted, food intake was reduced considerably in collared as well as in non-collared animals. Rate of passage of gastrointestinal contents in the rabbit was extremely high. Chromic oxide appeared in the faeces 4-5 h after it had been ingested in pelleted food. Coprophagy had no effect upon the rate of passage of gastrointestinal contents, and chromic oxide passed through at the same rate, whether it was incorporated in soft faeces or in pelleted diet.

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) contaminated sediments can be significant sources of Hg in aquatic ecosystems and, through re-emission processes, to the atmosphere. Transformation and release of Hg may be enhanced by various sediment perturbation processes, and controlling biogeochemical factors largely remain unclear. We investigated how rates of Hg transformations in pulp-fiber enriched sediment contaminated by Hg from chlor-alkali industry were controlled by (i) transient redox-changes in sulfur and iron chemistry, (ii) the chemical speciation and solubility of Hg, and (iii) the sources and characteristics of organic matter (OM). Sediment-bottom water microcosm systems were exposed to four combinations of air and nitrogen gas for a total time of 24 h. The treatments were: 24 h N-2, 0.5 h air + 23.5 h N-2, 4 h air + 20 h N-2 and 24 h of air exposure. As a result of these treatments, microcosms spanned a wide range of redox potential, as reflected by the dissolved sulfide concentration range of <= 0.3-97 mu M. Four different chemical species of inorganic divalent Hg (Hg-II) and methyl mercury (MeHg), enriched in different Hg isotope tracers, were added to the microcosms: 201 Hg(NO3)(2)(aq), Hg-202(II) adsorbed to OM (Hg-202(II)-OM(ads)), Hg-198(II) as microcrystalline metacinnabar (beta-(HgS)-Hg-198(s)) and (MeHgCl)-Hg-204(aq). Microcosm systems were composed of bottom water mixed with sediment taken at 0-2, 0-5 and 0-10 cm depth intervals. The composition of OM varied with sediment depth such that compared to deeper sediment, the 0-2 cm depth-interval had a 2-fold higher contribution of labile OM originating from algal and terrestrial inputs, serving as metabolic electron-donors for microorganisms. The potential methylation rate constant (k(meth)) of Hg tracers and net formation of ambient MeHg (MeHg/THg molar ratio) increased up to 50% and 400%, respectively at intermediate oxidative conditions, likely because of an observed 2-fold increase in sulfate concentration stimulating the activity of sulfate reducing bacteria with a capability of methylating Hg-II. Due to differences in Hg-II water-sediment partitioning, k(meth) varied by a factor of 11-70 for the different isotope-enriched Hg tracers. The chemical form of Hg-II was a major controlling factor for k(meth) and its response to the resuspension-oxidation of the system. The beta-(HgS)-Hg-198(s) tracer had the lowest k(meth) and it was mainly constrained by redox-driven Hg-II solubility. The Hg-202(II)-OM(ads) tracer showed an intermediate value on k(meth). It was controlled by both Hg-II solubility and availability of electron donors and acceptors, regulating bacterial activity. The Hg-201(NO3)(2)(aq) tracer had the highest value on k(meth) which was limited mainly by bacterial activity. The k(meth) was up to a factor of 3 higher in the 0-2 cm sediment depth-interval than in 0-5 and 0-10 cm intervals due to a larger contribution of labile OM in the 0-2 cm sediment. Reduction of Hg-II to Hg-0 followed by volatilization exclusively occurred at high sulfidic conditions in the top 0-2 cm sediment. Aromatic moieties of terrestrial OM, present mainly in the top sediment, is suggested to control the reduction of Hg-II. The Hg-0 volatilization rate constant for the Hg-202(II)-OM (ads) tracer exceeded that for beta-(HgS)-Hg-198(s) by one order of magnitude. Our results suggest that contaminated sediments posing a high risk for reactivation of legacy Hg following transient redox resuspension events are characterized by depletion of sulfate in the sediment porewater prior to resuspension, predominance of Hg-II species with solubility exceeding that of crystalline beta-HgS(s), and conditions promoting in situ formation and/ or import of labile OM from algal and terrestrial sources. Accumulation and risk assessment of mercury in soil as influenced by mercury mining/smelting in Tongren, Southwest China

Abstract:To investigate the influence of mercury (Hg) mining/smelting on the surrounding soil environment, ninety soil samples were collected around Hg mining/smelting areas in Tongren city, Guizhou Province, Southwest China. The total mercury (THg), methylmercury (MeHg), bioavailability and fractions of Hg in the soil and their potential risk were evaluated. The results showed that Hg mining/smelting significantly increased the soil pH and decreased the soil organic matter content ( p < 0.05). The THg content in the surrounding soil was much higher than that at the control site, with almost all the samples exceeding the national standard in China (3.4 mg/kg, GB15618-2018). Similarly, the concentrations of MeHg (0.09–2.74 μg/kg) and bioavailable Hg (0.64–62.94 μg/kg) in these soil samples were also significantly higher than those in the control site. However, the MeHg/THg ratio was significantly lower in mining/smelting influenced soils (0.01–0.68%) than in control soils (0.60–3.72%). Fraction analysis revealed that residual (RES-Hg) and organic matter-bounded (OM-Hg) Hg accounted for more than 50% of the THg. Ecological risk assessment revealed that the potential ecological risk for most of the Hg mining/smelting-influenced soils (30.16 ≤ E r ≤ 2280.02) were higher than those at the control site (15.12 ≤ E r ≤ 27.1). In addition, these Hg mining/smelting-influenced soils posed acceptable noncarcinogenic risks to adults (except for two soil samples), with hazard indices (HIs) ranging from 0.04 to 1.11 and a mean HI of 0.44. However, children suffer serious noncarcinogenic risks, with HIs ranging from 0.34 to 7.43 and a mean HI of 3.10.

Abstract:As a globally transported pollutant, mercury (Hg) released from human activity and methylmercury (MeHg) in the food web are global concerns due to their increasing presence in the environment. In this study, we found that Hg released from municipal sewage into the environment in China is a substantial anthropogenic source based on mass sampling throughout China. In total, 160 Mg (140-190 Mg, from the 20th percentile to the 80th percentile) of Hg (THg) and 280 kg (240-330 kg) of MeHg were released from municipal sewage in China in 2015. The quantities of released THg and MeHg were the most concentrated in the coastal regions, especially in the East, North and South China regions. However, the per capita release of THg and MeHg was the highest in the Tibetan region, which is recognized as the cleanest region in China. THg released into aquatic environments was mitigated from 2001 to 2015 in China, but the amounts released into other sinks increased. This study provides the first picture of the release of Hg from municipal sewage into various sinks in China, and policy makers should pay more attention to the diversity and complexity of the sources and transport of Hg, which can lead to Hg accumulation in the food web and can threaten human health.

Abstract:Nonferrous metal smelting is an important atmospheric mercury (Hg) emission source that has significant local and global impacts. To quantify the impact of Hg emission from non-ferrous metal smelter on the surrounding soil, an integrated model parameterizing the processes of smelter emission, air dispersion, atmospheric deposition and Hg accumulation in soil was developed. The concentrations of gaseous elemental Hg (GEM) around the smelter and the spatial distribution of Hg in the surrounding soil were measured and compared with the model results. Atmospheric deposition of Hg emitted from the smelter was identified as the main source of Hg accumulation in the surrounding soil. From 1960 to 2011, the smelter emitted approximately 105 t of Hg into the atmosphere, of which 15 t deposited locally and resulted in an increase of Hg concentration in soil from 0.12 to 1.77 mg kg(-1). A detailed examination of wind rose and model data suggested that the area within 1.0-1.5 km northwest and southeast of the smelter was most severely impacted. It was estimated that the smelter operation from 1969 to 1990, when large scale emission controls were not implemented, resulted in 6450 μg m(-2)yr(-1) of Hg net deposition and a model simulated increase of 0.40 mg kg(-1) of Hg accumulation in the soil. During the period from 1991 to 2011, atmospheric Hg emission from the smelter alone increased the average concentration in soil from 0.41 mg kg(-1) to 0.45 mg kg(-1). In the past 50 years, over 86% of Hg emitted from this smelter went into the global pool, indicating the importance of controlling Hg emissions from non-ferrous metal smelters.
The Silver Linings of Mercury: Reconsideration of Its Impacts on Living Organisms from a Multi-Timescale Perspective.

Abstract:Research on mercury (Hg), a naturally occurring element in Earth's lithosphere, has been extremely hot in the past few decades due to the outbreak of a series of disastrous poisoning incidents. However, such studies might provide us a biased view towards Hg if no thorough review about its long-term effects on living organisms from a multi-timescale perspective was performed. Hg might have played a mysterious role in critical intervals (e.g., mass extinction and oceanic anoxia events) in several geologic periods due to the elevated Hg levels induced by volcanism whereas it has long been used for various purposes in human history. Therefore, it is necessary to go through previous studies and historical records of different timescales (100 to 106 yr). In this work, we conducted a thorough review of Hg knowledge at three different timescales, i.e., geologic periods (106 yr), human history (103 yr), and contemporary history (100 yr), summarizing recent advances and indicated potential research gaps. By doing so, we demonstrated that it is possible to achieve safe and sustainable Hg applications despite the current Hg crisis. However, such silver linings depend on a better understanding of ecosystem dynamics. Besides, considering the possible dire consequences of erupted Hg levels as suggested in geological periods, swift actions to mitigate the impacts of anthropogenic activities on the Hg cycle will be another key point. Overall, this review presented a unique perspective of Hg combining different timescales, shedding light on the importance of a better understanding of the global ecosystem as a whole and maintaining the sustainability of planet Earth in the future.
Mercury isotope fractionation during the exchange of Hg between the atmosphere and land surfaces: implications for atmospheric Hg cycles

Abstract:Mercury (Hg) is a neurotoxic pollutant distributed globally via atmospheric transportation of elemental Hg (Hg(0)). Both anthropogenic and natural processes emit Hg to the atmosphere, where the later contributes up to approximately two thirds of the total emissions. Hg(II) in the Earth&#8217;s surface can be reduced chemically and biologically, resulted subsequent re-emission of Hg(0) back to the atmosphere. The Hg(0) exhibits bi-directional exchange (i.e., deposition and/or emission) between the land surface and atmosphere. Soil is the largest terrestrial Hg reservoir and its interaction with the atmosphere influences the atmospheric Hg cycling largely. Hg(0) emission from the terrestrial surfaces soil has been postulated to carry a negative MDF and positive MIF in the global Hg biogeochemical models. However, to date, no experimental evidence support that the complex terrestrial soil Hg(0) emission in accordance with this hypothetical simplification.We coupled the in-situ Hg(0) dynamic flux chamber measurement and stable Hg isotope analysis to report a first dataset on the Hg isotope fractionation during the exchange of Hg(0) between the atmosphere and &#160;8 soils and 1 cinnabar surfaces. The effect of air-soil/cinnabar exchange shifted Hg(0) concentrations in the flux chamber [i.e., (Hg(0)chamber-Hg(0)ambient)/Hg(0)chamber] by a factor of -0.29 &#8211; 0.90, corresponding to Hg(0) exchange fluxes ranging from -773 &#8211; 14457 ng m-2 h-1. Our results showed that the exchange of Hg(0) between the atmosphere and soil/cinnabar could lead to an enrichment of both light and heavy isotopes (&#948;202Hg signatures) in Hg(0), as well as depletion or enrichment of odd isotopes (&#916;199Hg signatures). This highlighted that multiple processes controlled the land-atmosphere exchange of Hg(0) and affected Hg isotope fractionation. Using a conservative isotope mass balance model, we found urban soils Hg(0) emission exhibited large variations in both &#948;202Hg (-3.04 to -0.34&#8240;) and &#916;199Hg (-0.60 to 0.38&#8240;), which might be controlled by the Hg isotopic signatures in soils and environmental factors. The isotope signatures of Hg(0) emitted from agricultural background soils (&#948;202Hg = -1.31 &#177; 1.09&#8240;, &#916;199Hg = -0.26 &#177; 0.16&#8240;, 1&#963;, n=15) and Hg-enriched agricultural soils in Hg mining area (&#948;202Hg = 0.51 &#177; 1.09&#8240;, &#916;199Hg = -0.10 &#177; 0.11&#8240;, 1&#963;, n=12) exhibited contrasting mass dependent fractionation (MDF). Photo-reduction of soil Hg(II) coordinated to sulfurless ligands likely dominated the MIF of Hg isotope during the exchange of Hg between the atmosphere and&#160; both urban and agricultural soils. While the positive shift of &#948;202Hg in mining area suggested that other processes including sorption and oxidation were also important in controlling MDF of Hg isotope during air/soil exchange. In a line with Hg-enriched agricultural soils, the forest soil emitted Hg(0) in Hg mining area enriched in heavy isotopes relative to the soil but depleted in odd isotopes. Hg(0) emission from cinnabar ore waste exhibited significant negative &#948;202Hg (-2.21 to -1.67&#8240;) but positive &#916;199Hg (0.17 to 0.38&#8240;). Our results demonstrate complex Hg isotope fractionation during air-soil/cinnabar Hg(0) exchange resulted contrasting enrichment or depletion effects on the atmospheric Hg isotope compositions, thus have important implications for understanding the atmospheric Hg isotope signatures and modeling the global Hg cycling.
Comprehensive insight into mercury contamination in atmospheric, terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems surrounding a typical antimony-coal mining district

Abstract:This study comprehensively investigated mercury (Hg) contents of various environmental compartments in a typical antimony-coal mining area with intensive industrial activities over the past 120 years to analyze Hg environmental behaviors and evaluate Hg risks. The total mercury (THg) contents in river water, sediments, soils, PM 10 , dust falls, vegetables and corns were 1.16 ± 0.63 μg/L, 2.01 ± 1.64 mg/kg, 1.87 ± 3.88 mg/kg, 7.87 ± 18.68 ng/m 3 , 13.01 ± 14.53 mg/kg, 0.30 ± 0.34 mg/kg and 3.11 ± 0.51 μg/kg, respectively. The δ 202 Hg values in soils and dust falls were − 1.58 ∼ 0.12‰ and 0.25 ∼ 0.30‰, respectively. Environmental samples affected by industrial activities in the Xikuangshan (XKS) presented higher THg and δ 202 Hg values. Binary mixing model proved that atmospheric deposition with considerable Hg deposition flux (0.44 ∼ 6.40, 3.12 ± 2.20 mg/m 2 /y) in the XKS significantly contributed to Hg accumulations on surface soils. Compared with soils, sediments with more frequent paths and higher burst probabilities presented higher dynamic Hg risks. Children were faced higher health risk of multiple Hg exposure than adults. Furthermore, the health risk of THg by consuming leaf vegetables deserved more attention. These findings provided scientific basis for managing Hg contamination.

Abstract:Although originally synthesized as an antianginal compound, amiodarone has emerged as an effective antiarrhythmic for both supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias. Over the decades, the properties, the effectiveness, the merits as well as the shortcomings of the compound have been well established. The major limitations of this agent are mainly due to the systemic side effects seen with prolonged therapy. Many of the toxic effects observed are primarily caused by the high iodine content present in the amiodarone molecule. Dronedarone, the first noniodinated amiodarone congener, has been developed largely to obtain the antiarrhythmic efficacy in the control of atrial fibrillation without the known adverse side effects of dronedarone. In this part of the supplement, the focus is the electrophysiological effects of dronedarone with the characterization in normal cardiac cells, in animal models of disease, as well as in human studies.

Abstract:The contribution of smelting of nonferrous metals to heavy metals in surface soil have become increasingly important over the past decade. In this study, the distribution of heavy metals around an abandoned mercury-bearing waste recovery enterprise were investigated. Soil (14) and plant (18) samples were collected in the surrounding area. The total concentration of heavy metals and methyl mercury content were measured by ICP-MS and HPLC-ICP-MS. The results show that the average contents of Cd, Cr, Pb, Hg and As in all soil samples are higher than the second-level values of Soil environmental quality-Risk control standard for soil contamination of development land (GB 36600-2018). Hg in the leaves ranged from 0.003 to 0.174 mg kg-1. Besides, the Pearson correlation analysis results indicate that Hg has a different environmental behavior compared to the other heavy metal under certain environmental or geographical conditions. But the mantel test statistical analysis results show that the Cr (P < 0.01), Cu, Pb, and Fe (P < 0.05) in the soil may have similar pollution sources with carbonate-bound mercury and iron-manganese oxide-bound mercury. The Hg concentrations show no correlation among plant leaves and soil, but significantly influenced by the distance and wind direction. These findings suggest that Hg in plant leaves may be derived from the deposition of atmospheric mercury from secondary mercury plant. The results will supplement those for relevant policy making for mercury-bearing waste recovery enterprises to improve urban environmental quality and human health.

Abstract:We prepared, purified, and characterized derivatives of epidermal growth factor (EGF) having a nitroxide spin-label attached covalently at the amino terminus. Characterization of these derivatives with regard to the positions of attachment of the spin-label was accomplished by a combination of peptide mapping, protein sequencing, and fast atom bombardment-mass spectrometry. One derivative was chosen for use in initial investigations by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of receptor-bound EGF and its dissociation kinetics. This derivative was found to be equipotent with the native hormone in competitive binding assays, in activating the EGF receptor kinase, and in stimulating the formation of EGF receptor dimers in solubilized cell extracts. Upon binding to solubilized EGF receptor, the spin-labeled EGF derivative became immobilized, giving rise to a visually distinct slow-motion EPR spectrum. The resulting spectrum showed no detectable dipolar interaction between nitroxides, indicating that the nitroxide moieties of spin-labels reacted at the amino termini of receptor-bound spin-labeled EGF molecules are separated by a distance of at least 16 A. An EPR study of the kinetics of dissociation of spin-labeled EGF in the presence of excess unlabeled EGF revealed a rapid component with a k off approximately 2 x 10(-2) s-1 and a less well resolved slow component.

Abstract:Human activities have caused serious soil mercury (Hg) pollution in industrial areas worldwide. Results showed that soil Hg contents were significantly elevated in areas of Hg mining, gold mining, and zinc smelting, but only slightly elevated in an area of coal-fired power plant, with averages of 44.0, 1.17, 0.73, and 0.14 μg g-1 (dry weight) in these four areas, respectively. The average percentage contributions from these anthropogenic sources to soil Hg in surrounding areas were estimated to be 92.2±9.70% from Hg mining (among which 77.6±12.0% from unroasted Hg ore and 14.6±7.50% from Hg calcine), 63.5±0.83% from the zinc smelting, 41.6±1.90% from gold mining, and 21.1±3.58% from coal-fired power plant. Atmospheric deposition was speculated to be the main pathway for soil Hg contamination, but mercury mining area contained significant runoff accumulation. Speciation and concentration of Hg in emission gas are crucial factors for Hg pollution in surrounding soils, because of short residence time of Hg2+/Hgp in the atmosphere. The results obtained in this study can provide scientific advices for risk assessment and soil remediation of Hg in China and other regions with similar industries.

Abstract:China Geochemical Baselines project provides mercury dataset of drainage catchment sediments and soils during 2008~2012 in China. Fifty-seven mercury anomalous regions exceeding the risk limits of the China National Environmental Standards for Heavy Metals in Soil (GB 15618-1995) are delineated in China. The sources of Hg risk anomalies of the top and deep samples are variously interpreted with respect to geology/mineralization and human activities. Nearly 72% anomalies (41 among the totaling 57 anomalous locations) are due to natural geological mineralisation belts and mining of Hg, As, Sb, Au, Ag, Pb, Zn, coal etc. The mining activities cause superimposed contents of Hg on the natural mineralization belts. The influence of large-scale mining of Hg, non-ferrous metals and gold are significantly reflected in the geochemical maps. The anthropogenic sources of urbanization emission, agriculture, coal combustion, and smelting industry cause the much more degree of mercury pollution in the eastern China where is highly populated and industrial density areas. Agriculture is an important Hg-emission source in the eastern China and Chengdu Plains where agricultural base for more than 2500 years in China. It is critical to carry out the follow-up detailed source investigation and monitor the temporal changes of Mercury in soils.

Abstract:The toxic heavy metal mercury (Hg) has significantly enhanced the global Hg cycle influenced by human activities over the last century. In this study, we presented a high-resolution Hg deposition history between ∼ 1780 and 2015 AD in a sediment core from Xincun Lagoon, located in the southeastern Hainan Island, South China, and analyzed it in conjunction with geochemical elements, grain-size distribution, organic matter, and HYSPLIT backward trajectory simulation. The objective was to investigate the influencing factors affecting historical Hg deposition in relatively remote regions and assess the extent of the effects of natural background and human activities. The results showed that the Hg in the sediment was deposited primarily through atmospheric deposition, which was closely related to regional and even global human activities. Anthropogenic Hg contamination increased gradually from the 1830s to 1850s, possibly due to Hg emissions from Opium Wars I and II occurring in southeastern China. High broad peaks of anthropogenic Hg were observed during the 1910s to 1950s and in the 1980s, likely associated with the two world wars and modern Chinese wars. In addition, a further sharp increase in anthropogenic Hg from the mid-1970s to the present occurred, likely originating from the intense industrial activities in China triggered by the reform and opening-up policy of China in 1978 and some countries in Southeast Asia.

Abstract:Definition and Pathophysiology Asthma is a reversible airways disease characterized by both smooth muscle hyperreactivity and airway inflammation. During the 1970s and early 1980s the focus was on smooth muscle constriction, and it was believed that better bronchodilators would greatly diminish our difficulties in controlling this condition. This, unfortunately, was not the case. The emphasis of therapy today has turned to airway inflammation. Lung biopsies from patients who have asthma show destruction of respiratory epithelium, basement membrane thickening, and inflammatory cellular infiltrate. Among the infiltrating cells are eosinophils, macrophages, and neutrophils that are called to the site of inflammation by the chemotactic products released by activated mast cells. Upon their arrival, these cells release their own products of inflammation, which amplify this immunologic response. A variety of neuropeptides also play a role, some serving to stabilize and others to destabilize the airway. One result of this airway inflammation is airways reactivity, also known as bronchial hyperresponsiveness. A common example of this scenario is the child who has allergic asthma and encounters a problematic allergen. This child has immunoglobulin E (IgE) to this allergen bound to mast cells in his or her airway. Upon exposure to the allergen, the binding of IgE and antigen triggers mast cell mediator release within minutes.

Abstract:In urban and industrial regions, sedimentary mercury (Hg) serves as the crucial indicator for Hg pollution, posing potential risks to ecology and human health. The physicochemical processes of Hg in aquatic environments are influenced by various factors such as anthropogenic emissions and aquatic environmental impacts, making it challenging to quantify the drivers of total mercury (THg) variations. Here, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variations, quantified driving factors, and assessed accumulation risks of sedimentary THg from the mainstream of a typical urban river (Haihe River). THg in the urban region (37−3237 ng g-1) was significantly higher ( t test, p < 0.01) than in suburban (71−2317 ng g-1) and developing regions (156−916 ng g-1). The sedimentary THg in suburban and developing regions increased from 2003 to 2018, indicating the elevated atmospheric deposition of Hg. Together with the temperature, grain size of sediments, total organic carbon (TOC), the pH and salinity of water, 40 components of parent and substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were first introduced to quantify the driver of sedimentary THg based on generalized additive model. Results showed that anthropogenic emissions, including three PAHs components (31%) and TOC (63%), accounted for 94% of sedimentary THg variations. The aquatic environmental impacts accounted for 5% of sedimentary THg variations. The geo-accumulation index of THg indicated moderate to heavy accumulation in the urban region. This study demonstrates that homologous pollutants such as PAHs can be used to trace sources and variations of Hg pollution, supporting their co-regulation as international conventions regulate pollutants.

Abstract:The isotopic composition of mercury (Hg) is increasingly used to constrain the sources and pathways of this metal in the atmosphere. Though China has the highest Hg production, consumption and emission in the world, Hg isotope ratios are rarely reported for Chinese wet deposition. In this study, we examined, for the first time outside North America, both mass-dependent fractionation (MDF, expressed as δ202Hg) and mass-independent fractionation of odd (odd-MIF, Δ199Hg) and even (even-MIF, Δ200Hg) Hg isotopes in 15 precipitation samples collected from September 2012 to August 2013 in Guiyang (SW China). All samples displayed significant negative δ202Hg (–0.44∼–4.27‰), positive Δ199Hg (+0.19 to +1.16‰) and slightly positive Δ200Hg (–0.01‰ to +0.20‰). Potential sources of Hg in precipitation were identified by coupling both MDF and MIF of Hg isotopes with a back-trajectory model. The results showed that local emission from coal-fired power plants and cement plants and western long-range transportation are two main contributing sources, while the contribution of Hg from south wind events would be very limited on an annual basis. The relatively lower Δ200Hg values in Guiyang precipitation may indicate a dilution effect by local sources and/or insignificant even-MIF in the tropopause contribution of this subtropical region. Our study demonstrates the usefulness of isotope fractionation, especially MIF for tracing sources and pathways of Hg in the atmosphere.

Abstract:The Minamata Convention on Mercury has mandated a renewed global effort to tackle Hg pollution. The present study evaluates Hg pollution at a primary Hg production site exploited since the Qin Dynasty (200s BC), with intensive industrial scale production over the past four decades. This single location accounts for over 95% total Hg production in China in recent years. To assess the environmental risk and effectiveness of recently implemented control measures, we collected 90 soil samples, 60 plant tissue samples, 47 sediment samples, and 47 river water samples from the site and its vicinity. A site-specific conceptual site model was established based on the sources, migration transformation pathways of Hg pollutant and its exposure scenarios. The maximum soil Hg concentration reached 10,451 mg kg-1, posing a high health and ecological risk. Vegetable and crop Hg concentrations outside the site reached 0.23 mg kg-1 in rice grains and 4.24 mg kg-1 in green onion. The highest health risk, with a hazard quotient of 130.66, was observed in the Ore Storage Site, which reduced to 17.14 when Hg bioavailability was considered. Risk control measures implemented in recent years included a stormwater collection system and capping of the tailing pond area with clean imported soil. These measures were generally successful; however, Hg in the tailings were found to be contaminating the imported surficial soil due to rainfall saturation and upward migration, suggesting a need for long-term post remedial site monitoring and maintenance. We also found that mining and smelting activities have contaminated a 6 km stretch of a nearby river, with sediment Hg concentrations reaching 2819 mg kg-1, and water column concentrations reaching 193.21 ng L-1. The sediment and water concentrations are highly correlated (R2 = 0.78), suggesting that, with risk control measures in place, a reservoir of Hg in polluted river sediment is now driving pollution in the water column. This work demonstrates that primary Hg mining has caused widespread and serious soil and water pollution. Risk control measures can reduce human health and ecological risks, but robust monitoring and maintenance are required for remediation to be effective in the long-term.
