Abstract:This study aimed to prepare a bioactive acrylic material by adding different types of glasses. Commercially available polymerized acrylic resin was mixed with 10% of four different types of glasses in the powder form and cured. Flexural strength, sorption, and solubility of the samples were tested according to ISO 20795-1:2013. The total number of samples used in the tests were 60. The materials were placed in artificial saliva of pH 4 and 7, and elution was performed for 0, 1, 28, and 42 days. The collected samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry to detect Ca, P, and Si ions and using ion chromatography to detect F ions. The materials obtained after modification with glasses showed lower compressive strength compared with pure polymethyl methacrylate but met the standard requirements. Two glass types showed higher solubility values compared with the value defined by the ISO standard. Biomin C and S53P4 released Ca, P, and Si ions, respectively, after 42 days in artificial saliva. Acrylic resins modified with 10% Biomin C and S53P4 glasses can be a valuable source of Ca and P ions under acid conditions for 28 and 42 days.

Mechanical Properties and Biocompatibility of 3D Printing Acrylic Material with Bioactive Components

Abstract:The aim of this study was to create a 3D printing material with bioactive properties that potentially could be used for a transparent removable orthodontic appliance. Materials and methods. To acrylic monomers, four bioactive glasses at 10% concentration were added, which release Ca, P, Si and F ions. The materials were printed on a 3D printer and tested for flexural strength (24 h and 30 days), sorption and solubility (7 days), ion release to artificial saliva pH = 4 and 7 (42 days) and cytotoxicity in the human fibroblast model. The released ions were determined by plasma spectrometry (Ca, P and Si ions) and ion-selective electrode (F measurement)s. Results: The material obtained released Ca2+ and PO43− ions for a period of 42 days when using glass Biomin C at pH 4. The flexural strength depended on the direction in which the sample was printed relative to the 3D printer platform. Vertically printed samples had a resistance greater than 20%. The 10% Biomin C samples post-cured for 30 min with light had a survival rate of the cells after 72 h of 85%.Conclusions. Material for 3D printing with bioactive glass in its composition, which releases ions, can be used in the production of orthodontic aligners.

Bioinspired Biomimetic and Nanobiomaterials

Abstract:Bioactive glass-based resin infiltrants were developed to evaluate their chemo-physico-mechanical properties. Three methacrylate-based experimental resin infiltrants were synthesized using 45S5, fluoridated-bioactive glass (F-BG), and boron-bioactive glass (B-BG), whereby pure dimethacrylate resins and ICON® were used as a control infiltrants. The degree of conversion (DC), thermal analysis, and wettability were evaluated. In-vitro bioactivity test(s) and weight measurements were conducted in simulated body fluid for up to 28 days. The optical properties were analyzed in artificial saliva for up to 30 days. The micro-hardness and morphological changes were investigated following chemical aging. The experimental resin infiltrants displayed comparable DC, nearly equivalent wettability to ICON®. An apatite layer was formed on the surface of experimental samples; however, non-linear behavior was observed for weight measurement. Reduction in micro-hardness was observed with chemical aging. The optical properties of experimental infiltrants were better than ICON. The B-BG group showed more resistance to chemical aging and showed less changes during thermal analysis, as well as less loss of hardness. In contrast to other groups, the 45S5-based group showed greater in-vitro bioactivity. F- and B-ions in BGs showed a positive effect and potential to treat white spot lesions within the confines of this inquiry.

Abstract:PURPOSE The aim of this study is to evaluate the mechanical and adhesive properties of three different resin cements with bioactive glass (BAG) incorporated in two different ratios. METHODS BAG was added to different resin cements (3M Rely-X Ultimate, GC Link Ace, and GC Link Force) in different ratios (5% and 10% by weight). The three-point flexural strength, microhardness, and bond strength properties were evaluated. The fracture types of the groups were then analyzed using a stereo microscope. The data were analyzed using a multifactorial analysis of variance and Tukey's post-hoc tests (α < 0.05). RESULTS The addition of BAG reduced the flexural strength of the resin cements (P < 0.05).The effect of BAG addition on the Vickers microhardness value was significantly different for each cement group (P < 0.05). In addition, with the exception of the GC link force group (10% BAG addition), the BAG addition decreased the bond strength of cements to dentin in all the groups (P = 0.171). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study confirmed that different resin cements comprising different ratios of BAG exhibited different flexural strength, hardness, and bond-strength properties. Since the bond strength values increased with the addition of 10% BAG in the GC Link Force cement group, the effects of different BAG compositions could be worth investigating in future studies.

Abstract:Colonization of polymeric dental prosthetic materials by yeast-like fungi and the association of these microorganisms with complications occurring during prosthetic treatment are important clinical problems. In previously presented research, submicron inorganic particles of silver sodium hydrogen zirconium phosphate (S–P) were introduced into poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) denture base material which allowed for obtaining the antimicrobial effect during a 90 day experiment. The aim of the present study was to investigate the flexural strength, impact strength, hardness, wear resistance, sorption, and solubility during three months of storage in distilled water. With increasing S–P concentration after 2 days of conditioning in distilled water, reduced values of flexural strength (107–72 MPa), impact strength (18.4–5.5 MPa) as well as enhanced solubility (0.95–1.49 μg/mm3) were registered, but they were at acceptable levels, and the sorption was stable. Favorable changes included increased hardness (198–238 MPa), flexural modulus (2.9–3.3 GPa), and decreased volume loss during wear test (2.9–0.2 mm3). The percentage changes of the analyzed properties during the 90 days of storage in distilled water were similar for all materials.

Abstract:NbOx/SiO2 with a very high catalytic activity for the gas-phase Beckmann rearrangement of cyclohexanone oxime to ε-caprolactam, was investigated by different spectroscopic methods in order to obtain new insights in the formation and nature of the active sites. FT-IR spectroscopy in combination with pyridine adsorption measurements revealed that the catalyst material contains Lewis-acidic sites, most probably related to the Nb[double bond, length as m-dash]O groups of isolated tetrahedral NbO4 surface species, whereas no Brønsted-acidic sites were observed. Results from in situ Raman and complementary FT-IR measurements strongly suggest that Brønsted-acidic Nb-OH sites can be generated from Nb[double bond, length as m-dash]O groups by reaction with ethanol. This is in agreement with the observation that ethanol is essential for obtaining a very good catalyst performance. However, the Brønsted-acidic sites can be detected in significant amounts in particular in the presence of a Lewis-base, e.g. pyridine, most probably because the formation and/or the stability of these Brønsted-acidic sites are enhanced by a basic molecule. Assuming that cyclohexanone oxime, being a base, can play a similar role as pyridine, we propose on the basis of the spectroscopic findings obtained in this work and our kinetic results published recently, a reaction scheme for the formation of the active site at the Nb[double bond, length as m-dash]O group as well as for the recovery of the Nb[double bond, length as m-dash]O site during the final stage of the gas-phase Beckmann rearrangement.

Abstract:In recent years, the rising number of bone diseases which affect millions of people worldwide has led to an increased demand for materials with restoring and augmentation properties that can be used in therapies for bone pathologies. In this work, PMMA- MBG composite scaffolds containing ceria (0, 1, 3 mol%) were obtained by the phase separation method. The obtained composite scaffolds were characterized by X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. UV–Vis measurement and EDX analysis confirmed the presence of cerium ions in the composite scaffolds. Evaluation of the in-vitro biocompatibility using MTT assay showed that composite scaffold containing 1 mol% of ceria presented higher viability than control cells (100%) for concentrations ranging between 5 and 50% after 96 h of incubation.

Abstract:Secondary caries seriously limits the lifetime of composite resin. However, integrating all desirable properties (i.e., mechanical, antibacterial, bioactivity, and biocompatibility) into one composite resin is still challenging. Herein, a novel bioactive glass (BAG)-modified hybrid composite resin has been successfully developed to simultaneously achieve excellent mechanical properties, good biocompatibility, and antibacterial and remineralizing capabilities. When the mass fractions of BAG particles were added from 8 to 23 wt %, the original mechanical properties of the composite resin, including flexural strength and compressive strength, were not obviously affected without compromising the degree of conversion. Although the BAG incorporation of mass fractions of 16 wt % to 23 wt % in composite resins reduced cell viability, the viability could be recovered to normal by adjusting the pH value. Moreover, the BAG-modified composite resins that were obtained showed good antibacterial effects against Streptococcus mutans and enhanced remineralizing activity on demineralized dentin surfaces with increasing incorporation of BAG particles. The possible mechanisms for antibacterial and remineralizing activity might be closely related to the release of bioactive ions (Ca 2+ , Si 4+ ), suggesting that its antibacterial and biological properties can be controlled by modulating the amounts of bioactive ions. The capability to balance the mechanical properties, cytotoxicity, antibacterial activity, and bioactivity makes the BAG-modified composite resin a promising prospect for clinical application. Our findings provide insight into better design and intelligent fabrication of bioactive composite resins.

Abstract:Introduction: The sol-gel method for production of mesoporous bioactive glass nanoparticles (MBGNs) has been adapted to synthesize tricalcium silicate (TCS) particles which, when formulated with other additives, form the gold standard for dentine-pulp complex regeneration. Comparison of TCS and MBGNs obtained by sol-gel method is critical considering the results of the first ever clinical trials of sol-gel BAG as pulpotomy materials in children. Moreover, although lithium (Li) based glass ceramics have been long used as dental prostheses materials, doping of Li ion into MBGNs for targeted dental applications is yet to be investigated. The fact that lithium chloride benefits pulp regeneration in vitro also makes this a worthwhile undertaking. Therefore, this study aimed to synthesize TCS and MBGNs doped with Li by sol-gel method, and perform comparative characterizations of the obtained particles. Methods: TCS particles and MBGNs containing 0%, 5%, 10% and 20% Li were synthesized and particle morphology and chemical structure determined. Powder concentrations of 15mg/10 mL were incubated in artificial saliva (AS), Hank's balanced saline solution (HBSS) and simulated body fluid (SBF), at 37°C for 28 days and pH evolution and apatite formation, monitored. Bactericidal effects against S. aureus and E. coli , as well as possible cytotoxicity against MG63 cells were also evaluated through turbidity measurements. Results: MBGNs were confirmed to be mesoporous spheres ranging in size from 123 nm to 194 nm, while TCS formed irregular nano-structured agglomerates whose size was generally larger and variable. From ICP-OES data, extremely low Li ion incorporation into MBGNs was detected. All particles had an alkalinizing effect on all immersion media, but TCS elevated pH the most. SBF resulted in apatite formation for all particle types as early as 3 days, but TCS appears to be the only particle to form apatite in AS at a similar period. Although all particles had an effect on both bacteria, this was pronounced for undoped MBGNs. Whereas all particles are biocompatible, MBGNs showed better antimicrobial properties while TCS particles were associated with greater bioactivity. Conclusion: Synergizing these effects in dental biomaterials may be a worthwhile undertaking and realistic data on bioactive compounds targeting dental application may be obtained by varying the immersion media.

Marginal integrity of prototype bioactive glass-doped resin composites in class II cavities

Abstract:Objectives: This in vitro study examined the marginal integrity of experimental composite materials doped with bioactive glass (BG). Materials and methods: Class-II MOD cavities were prepared and restored with one of the following composite materials: a commercial composite material as a reference (Filtek Supreme XTE), an experimental composite doped with BG 45S5 (C-20), and an experimental composite doped with a fluoride-containing BG (F-20). Six experimental groups (n = 8) were used, as each of the three composites was applied with (+) or without (-) a universal adhesive (Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose). All specimens were subjected to thermocycling (10,000 x, 5-55 °C) and then additionally stored in artificial saliva for eight weeks. Scanning electron micrographs of the mesial and the distal box were taken at three time points (initial, after thermocycling, and after eight weeks of storage in artificial saliva). The margins were classified as "continuous" and "non-continuous" and the percentage of continuous margins (PCM) was statistically analyzed (α = 0.05). Results: In most experimental groups, thermocycling led to a significant decrease in PCM, while the additional 8-week aging had no significant effect. F-20 + performed significantly better (p = 0.005) after 8 weeks storage in artificial saliva than the reference material with adhesive, while no statistically significant differences were observed at the other two time points. C-20 + exhibited significantly better PCM than the reference material with adhesive after thermocycling (p = 0.026) and after 8 weeks (p = 0.003). Conclusions: Overall, the experimental composites with BG showed at least as good marginal adaptation as the commercial reference, with an indication of possible re-sealing of marginal gaps. Clinical relevance: Maintaining or improving the marginal integrity of composite restorations is important to prevent microleakage and its likely consequences such as pulp irritation and secondary caries.
Cellular differentiation, bioactive and mechanical properties of experimental light-curing pulp protection materials

Abstract:Objective: Materials for pulp protection should have therapeutic properties in order to stimulate remineralization and pulp reparative processes. The aim of this study was to evaluate the mechanical properties, biocompatibility, cell differentiation and bioactivity of experimental light-curable resin-based materials containing bioactive micro-fillers. Methods: Four calcium-phosphosilicate micro-fillers were prepared and incorporated into a resin blend: 1) Bioglass 45S5 (BAG); 2) zinc-doped bioglass (BAG-Zn); 3) βTCP-modified calcium silicate (β-CS); 4) zinc-doped β-CS (β-CS-Zn). These experimental resins were tested for flexural strength (FS) and fracture toughness (FT) after 24h and 30-day storage in simulated body fluid (SBF). Cytotoxicity was evaluated using MTT assay, while bioactivity was evaluated using mineralization and gene expression assays (Runx-2 & ALP). Results: The lowest FS and FT at 24h was attained with β-CS resin, while all the other tested materials exhibited a decrease in FS after prolonged storage in SBF. β-CS-Zn maintained a stable FT after 30-day SBF aging. Incorporation of bioactive micro-fillers had no negative effect on the biocompatibility of the experimental materials tested in this study. The inclusion of zinc-doped fillers significantly increased the cellular remineralization potential and expression of the osteogenic genes Runx2 and ALP (p<0.05). Significance: The innovative materials tested in this study, in particular those containing β-CS-Zn and BAG-Zn may promote cell differentiation and mineralization. Thus, these materials might represent suitable therapeutic pulp protection materials for minimally invasive and atraumatic restorative treatments.

Abstract:Background: A major disadvantage of polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) acrylic resins is susceptibility to biofilm accumulation. The incorporation of antimicrobial agents is a reliable prevention technique. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of incorporating dimethylaminohexadecyl methacrylate (DMAHDM) and/or 2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) into heat-polymerized (HP) and 3D-printed (3DP) denture base materials on the flexural strength, modulus of elasticity, and surface hardness. Methods: DMAHDM and/or MPC were mixed with the acrylic resin liquid of a heat-polymerized (ProBase Hot) and a 3D printed (NextDent Denture 3D) material at mass fractions of 1.5% and 3% and a combination of 3% MPC and 1.5% DMAHDM. Results: Significant differences in mechanical properties between the control and experimental groups have been detected (p-value < 0.0001). In HP materials, the addition of DMAHDM and/or MPC generally decreased the flexural strength, from (151.18 MPa) in G1 down to (62.67 MPa) in G5, and surface hardness, from (18.05 N/mm2) down to (10.07 N/mm2) in G5. Conversely, in 3DP materials, flexural strength was slightly enhanced, from (58.22 MPa) in G1 up to (62.76 MPa) in G6, although surface hardness was consistently reduced, from (13.57 N/mm2) down to (5.29 N/mm2) in G5. Conclusion: It is recommended to carefully optimize the concentrations of DMAHDM and/or MPC to maintain mechanical integrity.

Effect of Bioactive Filler Addition on the Mechanical and Biological Properties of Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer

Abstract:The maintenance of affected dentin can promote the greater conservation of tooth structure. The development of materials that have properties capable of reducing the demineralizing potential and/or even helping in dental remineralization is important for conservative dentistry. This study aimed to evaluate, in vitro, the alkalizing potential, fluoride as well as calcium ion release ability, antimicrobial activity, and dentin remineralization properties of resin-modified glass ionomer cement (RMGIC) incorporated with a bioactive filler (niobium phosphate (NbG) and bioglass (45S5)). The study samples were grouped into RMGIC, NbG, and 45S5. The materials' alkalizing potential, ability to release calcium as well as fluoride ions, and antimicrobial properties concerning Streptococcus mutans UA159 biofilms were analyzed. The remineralization potential was evaluated using the Knoop microhardness test, which was performed at different depths. The alkalizing and fluoride release potential was higher for the 45S5 group (p < 0.001) over time. An increase in the microhardness of demineralized dentin was observed in the 45S5 and NbG groups (p < 0.001). No differences in biofilm formation were observed between the bioactive materials, although 45S5 exhibited lower biofilm acidogenicity at different time points (p < 0.001) and greater calcium ion release in the microbial environment. A resin-modified glass ionomer cement enriched with bioactive glasses, particularly 45S5, is a promising alternative for the treatment of demineralized dentin.

Abstract:To promote osteointegration and simultaneously limit bacterial contamination without using antibiotics, we designed innovative composite cements containing copper (Cu)-doped bioactive glass powders. Cu-doped glass powders were produced by a melt and quenching process, followed by an ion-exchange process in a Cu salt aqueous solution. Cu-doped glass was incorporated into commercial polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)-based cements with different viscosities. The realized composites were characterized in terms of morphology, composition, leaching ability, bioactivity, mechanical, and antibacterial properties. Glass powders appeared well distributed and exposed on the PMMA surface. Composite cements showed good bioactivity, evidencing hydroxyapatite precipitation on the sample surfaces after seven days of immersion in simulated body fluid. The leaching test demonstrated that composite cements released a significant amount of copper, with a noticeable antibacterial effect toward Staphylococcus epidermidis strain. Thus, the proposed materials represent an innovative and multifunctional tool for orthopedic prostheses fixation, temporary prostheses, and spinal surgery.

Abstract:Artificially produced white spot lesions were created on the teeth samples. An experimental resin infiltrant doped with different bioactive glass fillers and a commercial resin material was applied. Samples were tested in artificial saliva, pH cycling solution, and tooth brushing simulator. Characterization was performed on Vicker's microhardness, surface roughness, and scanning electron microscopy. This study aimed to investigate the efficacy and durability of bioactive glass‐based dental resin infiltrants. Resin infiltrants were formulated by combining photoinitiated dimethacrylate monomers with three variations of bioactive glass: 45S5 Bioglass (RIS), boron‐substituted (RIB), fluoride‐substituted (RIF), and pure resins (PR), whereby TOOTH group (TH) and ICON (CN) served as commercial control groups. Teeth samples were prepared, and experimental and control infiltrants were applied on demineralized human‐extracted teeth. All the samples were subjected to immersion in artificial saliva and pH cycling for 30 days. The samples from another group underwent tooth brushing simulation for 9600 cycles. Following artificial saliva immersion, the samples' hardness values showed that RIB had the highest values (318.44 ± 3.83) while PR (212.52 ± 9.02) had the lowest values. After immersing into the pH cycling solution, the RIF showed the highest hardness (286.86 ± 5.11), while the lowest values for the CN (143.76 ± 3.50). After the tooth brushing simulation, the teeth samples with RIB showed maximum microhardness values (312.06 ± 16.30) and the weakest for the TH (189.60 ± 6.43). The commercial and experimental enamel resin infiltrants showed almost similar results overall, with RIB demonstrating better microhardness and comparable surface roughness. In contrast, RIF proved more resistant to pH cycling, exhibited higher microhardness, and performed better in surface roughness analysis. These findings suggest that resin infiltrant materials, especially RIF, have promising potential for effectively and esthetically managing white spot lesions.

Abstract:Disturbances in mineral and bone metabolism due to loss of kidney function greatly influence morbidity and quality of life, so Kidney Disease: Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) proposed the concept of chronic kidney disease-mineral and bone disorder (CKD-MBD). Japanese Society for Dialysis Therapy has created guidelines for the management of secondary hyperparathyroidism associated prognosis in hemodialysis patients, and we are managing parathyroid function of hemodialysis patients under this guideline. Bone biopsy is not recommended as part of routine evaluation for CKD-MBD because bone biopsy is the invasive examination. KDIGO proposed new histological classification of renal osteodystrophy, TMV classification, for standardizing a result of bone histomorphometry. We expect that new guideline improve the prognosis of hemodialysis patients.
Anti-Microbial Effect of AgBr-NP@CTMAB on Streptococcus Mutans and Assessment of Surface Roughness Hardness and Flexural Strength of PMMA

Abstract:Purpose: To investigate the inhibition of Streptococcus mutans (S.mutans) and its biofilm by AgBr-nanoparticles (NP) @CTMAB (cetyltrimethyl-ammonium bromide) and evaluate the changes in Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)'s surface roughness (Ra), microhardness, and flexural strength during prolonged immersion in AgBr-NP@CTMAB for application in the denture cleaning industry. Patients and methods: The antibacterial activity of AgBr-NP@CTMAB against S.mutans was measured colony formation assay, OD600 and laser confocal microscopy. Changes in the specimens' values for surface roughness, microhardness, and flexural strength (MPa) were measured after immersion solutions for 180 or 360 days. Results: The AgBr-NP@CTMAB solution exhibited a robust antibacterial effect on planktonic S. mutans, with a minimum bactericidal concentration of 5 µg/mL. The 10 µg/mL AgBr-NP@CTMAB solution efficiently inhibited S. mutans biofilm formation. (2) No significant difference in surface roughness after immersion in AgBr-NP@CTMAB (10 µg/mL and 20 µg/mL) comparing with distilled water (P > 0.05) and Polident had significantly higher than distilled water (P < 0.05). There was a significant decrease in the surface hardness of the PMMA specimens that were immersed in the Polident compared with those in distilled water (P < 0.05). While, no significant differences in surface hardness after immersion in the AgBr-NP@CTMAB (P > 0.05). The result of flexural strength suggested that there was no statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) between AgBr-NP@CTMAB as well as Polident and water. Conclusion: AgBrNP@CTMAB can efficiently inhibit the growth of plankton S.mutans and biofilm formation, without affecting the flexural strength, microhardness, or surface roughness of PMMA. Therefore, AgBrNP@CTMAB holds promise as a new denture cleaning agent.
Assessment of Mechanical/Chemical Properties and Cytotoxicity of Resin-Modified Glass Ionomer Cements Containing Sr/F-Bioactive Glass Nanoparticles and Methacrylate Functionalized Polyacids

Abstract:This study prepared low-toxicity, elemental-releasing resin-modified glass ionomer cements (RMGICs). The effect of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA, 0 or 5 wt%) and Sr/F-bioactive glass nanoparticles (Sr/F-BGNPs, 5 or 10 wt%) on chemical/mechanical properties and cytotoxicity were examined. Commercial RMGIC (Vitrebond, VB) and calcium silicate cement (Theracal LC, TC) were used as comparisons. Adding HEMA and increasing Sr/F-BGNPs concentration decreased monomer conversion and enhanced elemental release but without significant effect on cytotoxicity. Rising Sr/F-BGNPs reduced the strength of the materials. The degree of monomer conversion of VB (96%) was much higher than that of the experimental RMGICs (21-51%) and TC (28%). The highest biaxial flexural strength of experimental materials (31 MPa) was significantly lower than VB (46 MPa) (p < 0.01) but higher than TC (24 MPa). The RMGICs with 5 wt% HEMA showed higher cumulative fluoride release (137 ppm) than VB (88 ppm) (p < 0.01). Unlike VB, all experimental RMGICs showed Ca, P, and Sr release. Cell viability in the presence of extracts from experimental RMGICs (89-98%) and TC (93%) was significantly higher than for VB (4%). Experimental RMGICs showed desirable physical/mechanical properties with lower toxicity than the commercial material.
Cytotoxicity, Biocompatibility, and Calcium Deposition Capacity of 45S5 Bioglass Experimental Paste and Bio-C Temp: In Vitro and In Vivo Study Using Wistar Rats

Abstract:The evolution of biomaterials engineering allowed for the development of products that improve outcomes in the medical-dental field. Bioglasses have demonstrated the ability to either compose or replace different materials in dentistry. This study evaluated the cytotoxicity, biocompatibility, calcium deposition, and collagen maturation of 45S5 bioglass experimental paste and Bio-C Temp, compared to calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) paste. The 45S5 bioglass and Ca(OH)2 powder were mixed with distilled water (ratio 2:1); Bio-C Temp is ready-for-use. Dental pulp cells were exposed to the materials' extracts (1:2 and 1:4 dilutions; 24, 48, and 72 h) for MTT and live/dead analyses. Polyethylene tubes filled with the pastes, or left empty (control), were implanted on the dorsum of 16 rats. After 7 and 30 days (n = 8/period), the rats were euthanized and the specimens were processed for hematoxylin-eosin (H&E), von Kossa (vK), and picrosirius red (PSR) staining, or without staining for polarized light (PL) birefringence analysis. A statistical analysis was applied (p < 0.05). There was no difference in cell viability among Ca(OH)2, 45S5 bioglass, and the control, across all periods and dilutions (p > 0.05), while Bio-C Temp was cytotoxic in all periods and dilutions compared to the control (p < 0.05). Regarding biocompatibility, there was a reduction in inflammation from 7 to 30 days for all groups, without significant differences among the groups for any period (p > 0.05). The fibrous capsules were thick for all groups at 7 days and thin at 30 days. All materials showed positive structures for vK and PL analysis. At 7 days, the control and 45S5 bioglass showed more immature collagen than the other groups (p < 0.05); at 30 days, 45S5 bioglass had more immature than mature collagen, different from the other groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, Bio-C Temp presented cytotoxicity compared to the other materials, but the three pastes showed biocompatibility and induced calcium deposition. Additionally, the bioglass paste allowed for marked and continuous collagen proliferation. This study contributed to the development of new biomaterials and highlighted different methodologies for understanding the characteristics of medical-dental materials.
