Abstract:Nanozymes are more stable, economical, and easier to produce than natural enzymes; however, their low activity in non-acidic environments and lack of substrate selectivity severely limit the applications of nanozymes. In this study, we developed Co- and N-doped carbon dot nanozymes (CoNCDs) that specifically exhibited peroxidase-like activity toward o-phenylenediamine in a non-acidic environment. Based on the peroxidase-like activity and fluorescence property of CoNCDs in a neutral environment, a one-pot multi-mode sensing platform (colorimetric and ratiometric fluorescence imaging) was developed to detect cholesterol and xanthine in solution and human serum samples. This platform was simple to operate, and the CoNCDs demonstrated a reduced detection time and an improved analytical performance compared to most of the reported nanozymes. Moreover, the improved peroxidase activity at neutral pH, good biocompatibility, and photostability of CoNCDs facilitated their use for monitoring endogenous H2O2 levels in vivo. This study not only provides a novel approach for developing an acid pH-independent and substrate selectivity nanozyme but also demonstrates the application of ratiometric fluorescence imaging using the developed CoNCDs both in vitro and in vivo.
Xanthine oxidase immobilized cellulose membrane-based colorimetric biosensor for screening and detecting the bioactivity of xanthine oxidase inhibitors

Abstract:Xanthine oxidase (XO) is a typical target for hyperuricemia and gout, for which there are only three commercial xanthine oxidase inhibitors (XOIs): febuxostat, topiroxostat and allopurinol. However, these inhibitors have problems such as low bioactivity and several side effects. Therefore, the development of novel XOIs with high bioactivity for the treatment of hyperuricemia and gout is urgently needed. In this work we constructed a XO immobilized cellulose membrane colorimetric biosensor (XNCM) by the TEMPO oxidation, amide bond coupling and nitro blue tetrazolium chloride (NBT) loading method. As expected, the XNCM was able to detect xanthine, with high selectivity and sensitivity by colorimetric method with a distinctive color change from yellow to purple, which can be easily observed by the naked-eye in just 8 min without any complex instrumentation. In addition, the XNCM sensor performed screening of 21 different compounds and have been successfully pre-screened out XOIs with biological activity. Most importantly, the XNCM was able to quantitatively detect the IC50 values of two commercial inhibitors (febuxostat and allopurinol). All the results confirmed that the XNCM is a simple and effective tool which can be used for the accelerated screening of XOIs and has the potential to uncover additional XOIs.

Abstract:Given the metabolization of xanthine into uric acid, and the relevance with diseases and food safety, it is significantly desirable to propose a rapid, sensitive, and reliable strategy to monitor the expression level of xanthine in biological liquids. Herein, a H2O2-responsive colorimetric sensing system was triumphantly developed for xanthine assay by combining peroxidase-mimetic magnetic Fe nanoparticles (Fe NPs) and xanthine oxidase (XOD). XOD catalyzed xanthine oxidizing into H2O2, which cooperated with Fe NPs to catalyze the oxidation of chromogenic substrate 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into oxidized (oxTMB) along with the absorbance at 652 nm appearing and increasing. Therefore, a sensitive, rapid, and convenient colorimetric platform for H2O2 and xanthine sensing was successfully developed with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.029 μM for H2O2 and 0.034 μM for xanthine. In general, the Fe NPs nanozyme with high peroxidase-like activity features the low-cost, high-performance, and ease of preparation, then providing an efficient and sensitive sensing platform for blood xanthine monitoring as an alternative to traditional strategies.

Hemin@carbon Dot Hybrid Nanozymes with Peroxidase Mimicking Properties for Dual (colorimetric and Fluorometric) Sensing of Hydrogen Peroxide, Glucose and Xanthine

Abstract:The multifunctional hemin@carbon dot hybrid nanozymes (hemin@CD) with simultaneous peroxidase-like activity and fluorescence signalling property was prepared for the first time. Based on these properties, hemin@CD was applied to develop a dual-channel fluorescent probe for H2O2 and H2O2-based biocatalytic systems. By virtue of the peroxidase-like activity, hemin@CD can catalyze the oxidative coupling of 4-aminoantipyrine with phenol in the presence of H2O2 to form a pink-red quinoneimine dye with a maximum absorbance at 505 nm. Under the excitation wavelength of 480 nm, the green fluorescence of hemin@CD peaks at 540 nm and is quenched by the generated quinoneimine dye due to an inner filter effect, and also by H2O2 because of dynamic quenching. Thus, a colorimetric and fluorimetric dual-channel optical probe for H2O2 is obtained. Due to the glucose/xanthine transformations under formation of H2O2 by the relevant oxidase catalysis, the probe can be applied for detection of glucose and xanthine. The colorimetric detection limits for H2O2, glucose and xanthine are 0.11, 0.15, 0.11 μM, and the and fluorimetric detection limits are 0.15, 0.15, 0.12 μM, respectively.

Abstract:Background: Nanozymes are one of the ideal substitutes for natural enzymes because of their excellent chemical stability and simple preparation methods. However, due to the limited catalytic ability of most reported nanozymes, constructing nanomaterials with low cost and high activity is gradually becoming an exploration focus in the field of nanozymes. Heteroatom doping of metal-organic frameworks is one of potential approaches to design nanozymes with high catalytic performance. Due to their multiple valence states properties, V-doped metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived LDH is expected to be a good enzyme-like catalyst. To our knowledge, the V-doped MOF-derived LDH as nanozyme is not explored before. Results: We report the in-situ synthesis of NiV-layered double hydroxides (LDHs) on nickel-based MOF, i.e. Ni-MOF@NiV-LDHs. The MOF surface is covered by 2D nanosheets. This unique structural design increases the specific surface area of the material, enables more exposure of catalytic active sites to participate in reactions and accelerates the electron transfer rate. The Ni-MOF@NiV-LDHs have high peroxidase-like activity able to catalyze TMB oxidation by H2O2 via the generation of •OH and O2•-. Relative to Ni-MOF, the Ni-MOF@NiV-LDHs shows 47-fold peroxidase-like activity rise. It had good affinity to TMB and H2O2, with the Michaelis-Menten constants of 0.12 mM and 0.007 mM, respectively. The hydroquinone (HQ) consumed the reactive oxygen species generated in the TMB + H2O2+Ni-MOF@NiV-LDHs system to inhibit the TMB oxidation. On this basis, a sensitive and rapid assay for determining HQ was developed, with a linear range of 0.50-70 μM and a LOD of 0.37 μM. Significance: This work provided some clues for the further development of novel nanozymes with high catalytic performance via a strategy of heteroatom doping. And the constructed colorimetric analysis method was successfully utilized for the determination of HQ in actual waters, which has the potential for practical application in the analysis of environmental pollutants.

Abstract:Novel Co(OH) 2 /MXene-Ti 3 C 2 nanocomposites with oxidase (OXD)-mimic, peroxidase (POD)-mimic, and catalase (CAT)-mimic activities were prepared by a simple two-step method. The Co(OH) 2 /MXene-Ti 3 C 2 nanocomposites with triple-enzyme mimic activities were embedded into sodium alginate (SA) gels for the first time to fabricate a target-responsive hydrogel-assisted assay. The catalytic mechanism and steady-state kinetics of Co(OH) 2 /MXene-Ti 3 C 2 nanocomposites were investigated. Subsequently, hypoxanthine (Hx) was catalyzed by xanthine oxidase (XOD) to form H 2 O 2 , which reacts with 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethyl-benzidine (TMB) in the presence of Co(OH) 2 /MXene-Ti 3 C 2 nanocomposites to form a blue oxide (ox-TMB) in the hydrogel. The visible color change of the hydrogel with the increase of Hx concentration can be recognized through a smartphone App to transfer the red (R), green (G), and blue (B) values for the quantitative determination of Hx, with a detection range from 5 to 250 μM, and detection limit of 0.2 μM. The method was applied to the determination of Hx content in different aquatic products. The spiked recoveries of the aquatic products were from 94.1 to 106.4%, and the relative standard deviations (RSD) were less than 5.4%. Our results show that the Co(OH) 2 /MXene-Ti 3 C 2 nanocomposites hydrogel-assisted colorimetric biosensor is cost-effective, sensitive, and selective and has excellent application prospects for in-the-field determination of Hx.
A PdPt Nanoparticle-Decorated Thiol-Functionalized MOF with High Peroxidase-Like Activity for Colorimetric Sensing of D-glucose and Chlorophenol Isomers.

Abstract:The peroxidase (POD)-like catalytic activity of various nanozymes was extensively applied in many significant fields. In this study, a thiol-functionalized MOF-loaded PdPt nanocomposite (UiO-66-(SH)(2)@PdPt) was fabricated, which possesses superior and selective POD-like activity with strong affinity towards H2O2 and 3,3 & PRIME;,5,5 & PRIME;-tetramethylbenzidine under mild conditions. The POD-like property of UiO-66-(SH)(2)@PdPt was used to sensitively detect the concentration of d-glucose under near-neutral (pH = 6.5) conditions. The detection limit of d-glucose was as low as 2.7 & mu;M, and the linear range of d-glucose was 5-700 & mu;M. In addition, UiO-66-(SH)(2)@PdPt could accelerate the oxidative coupling chromogenic reaction of chlorophenol (CP) and 4-aminoantipyrine (4-AAP) in the presence of H2O2. Based on this phenomenon, a simple and visualized sensing array for the identification of chlorophenol contaminant isomers was further constructed to finally achieve the effective differentiation of three monochlorophenol isomers and six dichlorophenol isomers. Furthermore, a colorimetric detection method for 2-chlorophenol and 2,4-dichlorophenol was established. This work provides an effective means to improve the catalytic activity and selectivity of nanozymes by introducing an ideal carrier, which will be of significant value for the design of efficient nanozymes.
Reusable ring-like Fe3O4/Au nanozymes with enhanced peroxidase-like activities for colorimetric-SERS dual-mode sensing of biomolecules in human blood

Abstract:Peroxidase-like nanozymes have led to important progress in biosensing, but most of nanozyme sensing systems are currently established by a single-signal output mode, which is susceptible to environmental and operational factors. Thus construction of a dual-signal output nanozyme sensing system is essential for obtaining reliable and robust performance. In this study, a novel peroxidase mimicking nanozyme was developed by decorating magnetic ring-like Fe3O4 with gold nanoparticles (R-Fe3O4/Au) for the colorimetric and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) dual-mode detection of biomolecules in human serum. The R-Fe3O4/Au nanozymes served as mimetic peroxidase which can catalyze the oxidation of colorless 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine by hydrogen peroxide, and concomitantly as SERS substrates for detecting the Raman signals of oxidized products, providing an effective approach to investigate the reaction kinetics of enzymes. Based on the redox reactions, the nanozymes achieved colorimetric-SERS dual-mode sensing of glutathione (GSH) and cholesterol with detection limits as low as 0.10 μM and 0.08 μM, respectively. Furthermore, the nanozymes enabled rapid detection of GSH and cholesterol in serum without any complicated sample pretreatment. The R-Fe3O4/Au catalyst still displayed excellent peroxidase activity even after repeated use for 5 times. The proposed colorimetric-SERS dual-mode sensors exhibited good accuracy and reproducibility, which provides a new avenue for exploiting multifunctional sensors and has a great application prospect in biosensing.
Cu-MoOx-based nanozyme with enhanced peroxidase like activity for quinolone antibiotics detection

Abstract:The abuse of antibiotics has seriously threatened human health and living environment. Nevertheless, the detection of quinolones is currently mainly performed by high-cost and cumbersome means, such as High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC). Herein, we reported a novel method based on copper-doped MoOx nanoparticles (Cu-MoOx NPs) with peroxidase-like enhancement activity for the easy preparation, sensitive and rapid visualization of quinolone detection. Cu-MoOx NPs can make the chromogenic substrate 3,3',5,5'-Tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) change from colorless to blue. Moreover, the addition of quantitative quinolone antibiotics can significantly accelerate the TMB oxidation reaction. Based on this phenomenon, a colorimetric method for detecting quinolone antibiotics was established with a good linear relationship ranging from 1 × 10-6 M to 1.3 × 10-4 M, and the detection limit was 0.310 μM for ciprofloxacin (CIP) and 0.520 μM for levofloxacin (LVFX). Furthermore, the mechanism was also explored, and the results showed that the peroxidase-like activity of Cu-MoOx NPs was probably derived from the generated OH, 1O2, oxygen vacancies and partially reduced Cu+, and on the other hand was derived from quinolone antibiotics and nanozymes electrostatic interaction between them.

Abstract:Abnormal H2 O2 and cholesterol levels are closely related to many diseases. This work reports a facile process for the synthesis of oxidized glutathione (GSSG)-modified MoS2 nanosheets (MoS2 -GSSG NSs). The biocompatible MoS2 -GSSG NSs have good dispersibility and high affinity to the substrate 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB), which is beneficial for improving peroxidase-like catalytic activity of MoS2 . The high peroxidase-like activity of MoS2 -GSSG NSs was applied as a robust nanoplatform for low-cost, rapid, and highly effective colorimetric detection of H2 O2 and total/free cholesterol. Moreover, the peroxidase-like catalytic mechanism was studied by the steady-state kinetics method. The catalytic activity was remarkably high at a wide range of pH (2.4-7.0) and temperature values (25-70 °C). The cholesterol was catalyzed by cholesterol oxidase (ChOx) in the presence of O2 to generate H2 O2 , which oxidized TMB to generate a blue-colored product (oxTMB) under the catalysis of MoS2 -GSSG NSs. The detection limit (DL) of total cholesterol and H2 O2 was as low as 5.36 and 0.51 μm, respectively. The linear ranges for detecting cholesterol and H2 O2 were from 5.36 to 800 μm and from 0.51 to 50 μm, respectively. This method was also successfully applied to the detection of cholesterol in serum. The detection concentration of total cholesterol was consistent with that of the value detected by the blood biochemical method used in the clinic.

Abstract:Artificial oxidase and peroxidase mimics that are based on nanomaterials have drawn enormous attention due to their high stability, high efficiency, and low cost as compared with natural enzymes. Achieving multifunction and further boosting catalytic efficiency are two key directions of future nanozyme development. In this work, NiCo2O4@MnO2 microcubes with p–n junctions were constructed, exhibiting both oxidase- and peroxidase-like activities, capable of catalyzing the oxidation of tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of O2 or H2O2. More importantly, such catalytic activity can be dramatically enhanced through illumination due to the in-build p–n junctions and the consequent photoelectric effect. As a prototype, NiCo2O4@MnO2 was utilized in a colorimetric assay to detect trace hydroquinone. An outstanding lowest detection limit of 0.042 μM is achieved, and the recovery in real water samples ranges from 99.87 to 101.10%. The dual enzyme-mimetic and photoenhanced catalytic activities render the nanozyme promising for various applications in sensors and catalysts.

Ru nanosheets with specific peroxidase activity for biosensor applications

Abstract:Nanozymes displaying peroxidase-like activity are helpful for various biomedical applications. In this work, uniform triangular Ru nanosheets (NSs) prepared by a facile hydrothermal approach are first found to possess high performance and specific peroxidase (POD)-like activity which catalyzes the oxidation of colorless 3,3′,5,5′-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) with H 2 O 2 to blue oxidized TMB (oxTMB). On basis of their outstanding POD activity, we successfully developed two highly sensitive colorimetric methods for detections of ethanol (0.02–0.88 mM, R 2 = 0.9909) and uric acid (UA) (3.91–500 μM, R 2 = 0.9938) in serum under the optimal conditions. The detection limits were 0.011 mM and 3.05 μM for ethanol and UA, respectively. These Ru NSs-based biosensors possess prominent characteristics of simple operation, sensitivity, reliability and high selectivity, enabling them suitable for on-demand analysis.

Abstract:Nanozymes are considered as ideal substitutes for nature enzymes; however, the enzyme activity and the relevant detection sensitivity in actual samples still need to be further improved. Here, a nanomaterial of CuO NP-POM composed of polyoxometalate (POM) decorated with copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs), which possessed tetraenzyme mimetic activities including oxidase (OXD)-, peroxidase (POD)-, catalase (CAT)-, and glutathione peroxidase (GPx)-like activities was developed. The corresponding catalytic performances, mechanisms, and kinetics were systematically investigated. Based on the POD-like activity of a CuO NP-POM nanocomposite, a colorimetric sensing platform for ascorbic acid (AA) was built with the detection limit of 15 nM, depending on the fact that AA can efficiently react with the oxidation product of TMB, which was catalyzed by CuO NP-POM on the basis of the POD-like activity. A simple fluorometric sensor for Fe2+ was developed on the basis of the GPx-like activity of CuO NP-POM with the detection limit of 8.0 nM. CuO NP-POM can weaken the fluorescence of the isoindole derivative derived from GSH and o-phthalaldehyde (OPA) due to the excellent GPx-like activity, which can accelerate the catalysis of GSH into GSSG in the presence of H2O2. However, in the presence of Fe2+, the fluorescence was recovered owing to the fact that the Fenton reaction between Fe2+ and H2O2 could reduce GSSG into GSH. The proposed colorimetric and fluorometric sensors have been successfully applied in detecting AA and Fe2+ in several food and biological samples. In Situ Enzymatically Generated Photoswitchable Oxidase Mimetics and Their Application for Colorimetric Detection of Glucose Oxidase

Abstract:In this study, a simple and amplified colorimetric assay is developed for the detection of the enzymatic activity of glucose oxidase (GOx) based on in situ formation of a photoswitchable oxidase mimetic of PO₄(3-)-capped CdS quantum dots (QDs). GOx catalyzes the oxidation of 1-thio-β-d-glucose to give 1-thio-β-d-gluconic acid which spontaneously hydrolyzes to β-d-gluconic acid and H₂S; the generated H₂S instantly reacts with Cd(2+) in the presence of Na₃PO₄ to give PO₄(3-)-stabilized CdS QDs in situ. Under visible-light (λ ≥ 400 nm) stimulation, the PO₄(3-)-capped CdS QDs are a new style of oxidase mimic derived by producing some active species, such as h⁺, (•)OH, O₂(•-) and a little H₂O₂, which can oxidize the typical substrate (3,3,5,5-tetramethylbenzydine (TMB)) with a color change. Based on the GOx-triggered growth of the oxidase mimetics of PO₄(3-)-capped CdS QDs in situ, we developed a simple and amplified colorimetric assay to probe the enzymatic activity of GOx. The proposed method allowed the detection of the enzymatic activity of GOx over the range from 25 μg/L to 50 mg/L with a low detection limit of 6.6 μg/L. Cu2O nanocubes–grafted highly dense Au nanoparticles with modulated electronic structures for improving peroxidase catalytic performances

Abstract:Based on the intermediate states of metal ions in metal oxide nanomaterials (NMs) that acted as the primary active species, the design of high-performance nanozymes has greatly stimulated current research in diverse biomedical applications. Herein, Cu2O nanocubes-grafted highly dense Au nanoparticles (NPs) was developed as an appealing nanozyme for H2O2 colorimetric sensor and antioxidant detections. The obtained Au/Cu2O heterostructures show efficient electron-transfer from metallic NPs to Cu2O nanocubes owing to the difference of Fermi energy between two components. The modulated electronic structure of Au/Cu2O hybrids enables them to possess enhanced peroxidase catalytic activity for the oxidation of 3, 3', 5, 5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) in the presence of H2O2, which is about 32% higher than that of pristine Cu2O nanocubes. Then, an excellent H2O2 colorimetric sensor was established by using Au/Cu2O heterostructures with a low limit of detection (LOD) of 0.054 μM, which is much lower than the H2O2 allowance level of US FDA regulations (ca.15 μM, 0.05 wt%). The obtained Au/Cu2O nanoproducts exhibit pronounced long-time stability with 95% peroxidase activity maintained after keeping them for 30 days, while residual 64.5% via Cu2O nanocubes. Furthermore, we assessed the anti-oxidative behavior of three natural antioxidants (tannic acid, gallic acid, tartaric acid) with the LODs as low as 0.039, 0.16 and 1.55 μM, respectively, and the antioxidant capacity in the following order: tannic acid > gallic acid > tartaric acid. Therefore, it is believed that the as-prepared Au/Cu2O nanozymes have promising potential applications in fields of biomedicine and food safety.

Abstract:The constrained enzymatic activity and aggregation challenges encountered of nanozymes pose an obstacle to their practical utility, necessitating a strategy to alleviate this problem and improve the enzymatic catalytic efficiency. Herein, MOF-confined ultrafine ZnIrO x clusters (ZnIrO x /ZnIrMOFs) nanozyme have been synthesized by controlling the in-situ growth of ZnIrO x via a one-pot method. Notably, due to the domain-limiting effect of MOF, the ZnIrO x clusters with small size grew uniformly in the structure of ZnIrMOFs nanosheets, while the presence of Zn atoms improved the crystallinity of the MOF phase and the dispersion of ZnIrO x clusters. Moreover, the obtained ZnIrO x /ZnIrMOFs exhibited excellent oxidase- and peroxidase-like activities and better substrate affinity, which can directly and effectively catalyze chromogenic reaction to produce corresponding color and signal changes. Adopting this strategy, we established a visual, sensitive, and selective colorimetric method for glucose detection with a linear range and detection limit of 2.66–319 μM and 1.9 μM, respectively. The successful detection of glucose in real serum and food samples implies the promising MOF-confined ultrafine nanozymes in biomedical diagnostics and in food industry.

Abstract:Nanozymes, serving as synthetic alternatives to natural enzymes, offer several benefits including cost-effectiveness, enzyme-like catalytic abilities, enhanced stability, adjustable catalytic activity, easy recyclability, mild reaction conditions, and environmental friendliness. Nonetheless, the ongoing quest to develop nanozymes with enhanced activity and to delve into the catalytic mechanism remains a challenge. In our research, we effectively developed Au@CuO nanocomposites (Au@CuO Nc), replicating the functions of four enzymes found in nature: peroxidase (POD), catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and oxidase (OXD). The catalytic efficiency of Au@CuO Nc for TMB oxidation (oxTMB) was approximately 4.8 times greater than that of plain Cu2O cubes, attributed to the synergistic catalytic impact between the Au element and Cu2O within Au@CuO Nc. Mechanistic studies revealed that the novel Au@CuO Nc nanozyme greatly enhances the decomposition of H2O2 to reactive oxygen species (ROS) intermediates (˙OH, ˙O2- and 1O2), resulting in increased POD-like activity of the single-component Cu2O cubes. When an antioxidant like TA was added to the chromogenic system, it converted oxTMB into a colorless form of TMB, enabling further evaluation of TA. Hence, a colorimetric sensor was developed for the rapid and precise quantitative measurement of TA, demonstrating strong linearity between 0.3 and 2.4 μM and featuring a low detection threshold of 0.25 μM. Moreover, this sensor was effectively utilized for the assessment of TA in actual tea samples. This work innovatively proposes a simplified and reliable strategy for the advanced design of highly effective Cu-based nanozymes, enhancing enzyme-like reactions for simultaneous, on-site colorimetric probing of antioxidants.

Abstract:For yolk-shell structured nanoreactors, multiple active components can be precisely positioned on core and/or shell that can afford more exposed accessible active sites, and the internal voids can guarantee sufficient contact of reactants and catalysts. In this work, a unique yolk-shell structured nanoreactor Au@Co3O4/CeO2@mSiO2 was fabricated and applied as nanozyme for biosensing. The Au@Co3O4/CeO2@mSiO2 exhibited superior peroxidase-like activity with a lower Michaelis constant (Km) and a higher affinity to H2O2. The enhanced peroxidase-like activity was attributed to the unique structure and the synergistic effects between the multiple active components. Colorimetric essays were developed based on Au@Co3O4/CeO2@mSiO2 for the ultra-sensitive sensing of glucose in the range of 3.9 nM-1.03 mM with the limit of detection as low as 3.2 nM. In the detection of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD), the cooperation between G6PD and Au@Co3O4/CeO2@mSiO2 triggered the redox cycling between NAD+ and NADH, thereby achieving the amplification of the signal and enhancing the sensitivity of the assay. The assay showed superior performance as compared to other methods with linear response of 5.0 × 10-3-15 mU mL-1 and lower detection limit of 3.6 × 10-3 mU mL-1. The fabricated novel multi-enzyme catalytical cascade reaction system allowed rapid and sensitive biodetection, demonstrating its potential in biosensors and biomedical applications.

Abstract:Nanozymes, as substitutes for natural enzymes, have been used to construct some fast cheap sensing platforms by virtue of the high catalytic activity. Herein, we firstly study the peroxidase-like activity of CeO2/Co3O4@N-doped hollow carbon microspheres as nanozymes. In the presence of H2O2, CeO2/Co3O4@NCH exhibits high peroxidase-like activity evaluated by the catalytic oxidation of the chromogenic substrate, 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB) into a blue oxTMB visually in 1 min. The larger surface area, pore-like structure, and oxygen vacancies contribute to the enhanced peroxidase-like activity of CeO2/Co3O4@NCH. The active species •O2- is detected during the catalytic process. Thus, based on the excellent peroxidase-like activity of CeO2/Co3O4@NCH, a facile and effective biosensor is fabricated for sensitive and selective determination of H2O2 and quercetin, respectively. CeO2/Co3O4@NCH shows high affinity towards H2O2 (Km = 4.001 mM) and TMB (Km = 0.086 mM). The detection limit of H2O2 and quercetin is as low as 0.086 mM and 1.19 μM (3σ/slope), respectively. This work remarkably extends the utilization of CeO2/Co3O4@NCH in designing a colorimetric sensing platform related to biosensing, food, and environmental monitoring. A fast colorimetric sensing platform for quercetin based on the excellent peroxidase-like activity of CeO2/Co3O4@NCH.
