Abstract:Adsorption is an effective approach for elimination of phosphorus from wastewater. Nevertheless, the environmental impact of adsorbent materials, the difficulty of recycling, and unsatisfactory utilization efficiency for disused adsorbents are still the limitations of adsorbent development and utilization. Herein, a novel polysaccharide-based composite hydrogel (HBPEC/SA/lignin hydrogel) containing 2-hydroxy-3-butoxypropyl hydroxyethyl cellulose (HBPEC), sodium alginate (SA) and lignin, designed for phosphorus and enhanced Cu2+ removal. The adsorption was pH dependent and was not affected significantly by co-existing anions (Cl- NO3 - and SO42-) except HCO3 (-). Interestingly, the captured phosphorus facilitated the adsorption of Cu2+, the Cu2+ adsorption capability increased from 10.49 to 14.51 mg Cu/g by P-loaded adsorbent compared with adsorbent without P loaded. Particularly, the adsorbent achieved quick desorption due to its thermoresponsive. The shrunken hydrogel could be desorbed with only small amount of eluent and showed relatively high desorption efficiency. Altogether, HBPEC/SA/lignin hydrogel exhibited appealing application prospects in wastewater treatment.

Abstract:Breaking the technical bottleneck of traditional powdered adsorbent in phosphate adsorption application treatment, a macroscopic high adsorption performance aluminum sludge-based composite hydrogel material was constructed to synergistically solve the problems of water eutrophication and aluminum sludge resourcization. In this study, porous Ce-modified aluminum sludge hydrogel microspheres (Ce-AlS-SA) were prepared to improve the surface chemical structure and microscopic morphology of the macroscopic adsorbent material to enhance the adsorption capacity and achieve effective solid-liquid separation. The best adsorption performance of the material (Ce-AlS12-SA1) was obtained when the Ce-AlS: SA: Na2CO3 was 12:1:1, and obtained the optimal adsorption conditions by Response Surface Method (RSM) with 1.5 mg/L of the dosage, 4 of pH and 50 mg/L of Cphosphate. The maximum adsorption of 20.36 mg P/g was obtained by the Langmuir model at 303 K, which was 2.92 times more than raw sludge. According to the Freundlich and pseudo-second-order kinetic model, the adsorption process is chemisorption; the multi-stage adsorption process is reflected in the intraparticle diffusion and film diffusion models. The main mechanisms combined with the characterization analysis are electrostatic gravity, ligand exchange, and inner-sphere complexation. Meanwhile, Ce-AlS12-SA1 shows good resistance to interference in the coexistence of multiple ions. Therefore, this material can be recognized as a new material with in-depth, diversified and practical needs for resourceful utilization, which is expected to achieve extensive engineering applications in the future.
Effect of Adding Alum Sludge from Water Treatment Plant on Sewage Sludge Dewatering

Abstract:Alum sludge from water treatment plant contained residual polyaluminum chloride (PACl) and large amount inorganic matters. Alum sludge acted as chemical conditioner and physical conditioner improved the sewage sludge dewatering. It indicated that the addition of alum sludge reduced the dosage of polyacrylamide (PAM) and decreased the moisture content of sewage sludge. The moisture content was 64% when the blend ratio was 1kg/kg (dry alum sludge/dry sewage sludge) with plate-and-frame filter press. The 3D-excitation–emission matrix (3D-EEM) was used to analyze the sludge dewatering process. A mechanism hypothesis of adding alum sludge in sewage sludge for improving the sludge dewatering was proposed. Alum sludge implements the charge neutralization and adsorption bridging effect, provides friction and squeeze for crushing sludge particles even cell, and acts as skeleton builders in the sludge to improve the sludge dewatering.

Abstract:It is of great significance and value to develop new phosphorus adsorbents to reduce water pollution and recycle phosphorus. In this work, Y 3+ was embedded in chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel beads by adsorption of amino functional groups and heavy metal ions, and a new type of yttrium chitosan-based hydrogel adsorbent (PC-Y-OH) was synthesized in situ on the hydrogel spheres by alkali treatment. The experimental results showed that the equilibrium pH affected the adsorption process of phosphate, and the adsorption capacity reached the highest value at pH 3. In addition, PC-Y-OH preferentially adsorbs phosphate when other substances (Cl - , NO 3 - , NO 2 - , HCO 3 - , SO 4 2- , NH 4 + , Ca 2+ , Mg 2+ , and humic acid) coexist. The adsorption mechanism of phosphate was mainly electrostatic interaction and ligand exchange under acidic conditions. However, ligand exchange and Lewis acid-base interaction were the main mechanisms in alkaline conditions. The adsorption kinetics and thermodynamics showed that the adsorption of phosphate was a multi-layer covering and chemisorption process and was non-spontaneous exothermic.

Abstract:To solve the problems such as water eutrophication caused by excess phosphorus, the potential residual value of aluminum sludge was fully exploited and its phosphate adsorption capacity was further improved. In this study, twelve metal-modified aluminum sludge materials were prepared by co-precipitation method. Among them, Ce-WTR, La-WTR, Y-WTR, Zr-WTR, and Zn-WTR showed excellent adsorption capacity for phosphate. The adsorption performance of Ce-WTR on phosphate was twice that of the native sludge. The enhanced adsorption mechanism of metal modification on phosphate was investigated. The characterization results showed that the increase in specific surface area after metal modification was 9.64, 7.5, 7.29, 3, and 1.5 times, respectively. The adsorption of phosphate by WTR and Zn-WTR was in the accordance with Langmuir model, while the others were more following the Freundlich model (R2 > 0.991). The effects of dosage, pH, and anion on phosphate adsorption were investigated. The surface hydroxyl groups and metal (hydrogen) oxides played an important role in the adsorption process. The adsorption mechanism involves physical adsorption, electrostatic attraction, ligand exchange, and hydrogen bonding. This study provides new ideas for the resource utilization of aluminum sludge and theoretical support for preparing novel adsorbents for efficient phosphate removal.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Alginate-based hydrogel adsorbents are being developed for removing heavy metals from wastewater. Activated sludges are a new source of low-cost alginate, and Pseudomonas species are dominant alginate-producing bacteria. In this work, polyvinyl alcohol/alginate (PVA/ALG) and polyvinyl alcohol/alginate/chitosan (PVA/ALG/CS) hydrogel beads were prepared by cross-linked blending P. aeruginosa alginate with polyvinyl alcohol and chitosan. The results show that PVA/ALG using bacterial alginate had better adsorption performance on Pb(II), Cd(II) and Cu(II) than that using commercial product. The maximum adsorption capacities of PVA/ALG and PVA/ALG/CS hydrogels for Pb(II) and Cr(VI) are 139.4 mg/g and 86.1 mg/g, respectively. The addition of chitosan greatly improved the specific adsorption of PVA/ALG/CS for Cr(VI). The adsorption processes of Pb(II) and Cr(VI) by PVA/ALG and PVA/ALG/CS are endothermic in nature, and mainly dominated by chemisorption and physisorption, respectively. After 5 cycles, the adsorption capacity of hydrogels for heavy metals maintains more than 85% of the initial adsorption capacity. The two hydrogels have good adsorption capacity for heavy metals in real water. Electrostatic interaction, complexation and cation exchange are involved in the adsorption of Pb, whereas the adsorption of Cr is related to electrostatic interaction, reduction, chelation and cation exchange. The results extend the application of alginate extracted from activated sludge microorganisms in pollutant removal.

Abstract:Adsorption-based technology provides a feasible alternative for phosphorus control in waterbodies. Herein, La-biochar derived from toxic sludge was encapsulated into polymer matrix as functional filler, and then surface modification on formed hydrogel via in-situ polymerization of polydopamine (PDA) was realized to achieve enhanced phosphate removal from water. Effects of biochar content and PDA coating time on adsorption performance were investigated, and optimized composite beads could achieve experimental maximum capacity of ∼13.74 mg P/g. Solution pH study implied favorable adsorption at pH 4–6, and coexisting anions noticeably facilitated phosphate capture owing to hydrogel swelling while reverse effect was observed for cation Ca2+. Kinetic study showed phosphate adsorption was chemisorption in nature, and overall adsorption process was mainly controlled by intraparticle diffusion stage. Adsorption isotherm using different samples suggested the transformation of sorption form from multilayer heterogeneous adsorption to monolayer homogeneous adsorption after PDA coating on hydrogel surface. Thereafter, the reusability of as-prepared hydrogel was investigated through cyclic adsorption–desorption experiments, and continuous treatment of phosphate-enriched water was conducted to evaluate its potential for practical application. This work could provide useful implication to the development of functional composite hydrogels for phosphate removal.

Abstract:Phosphate removal from water relies mainly on the effective adsorbent. Iron-loaded magnetic alginate-chitosan double-gel interpenetrated porous beads (M-IACBs) were prepared from waterworks iron sludge, magnetic nanoparticles, sodium alginate, and chitosan where magnetic nanoparticles were also synthesized from iron sludge. The interpenetrating network constructed by sodium alginate and chitosan improves the stability of the beads, while iron sludge acts as the main functional body for phosphate adsorption. M-IACBs with uniform size (~ 2 mm) and strong saturation magnetization intensity (~ 15.0 emu/g) maintain good stability in the pH range of 4–8. They have good selectivity for phosphate in the presence of competing ions. The phosphate adsorption by the beads followed the Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption was dominated by monolayer adsorption, and the fitting yielded a maximum phosphate adsorption capacity of 18.5 mg/g. The pseudo-second-order model better agrees with the experimental data. The adsorption properties of iron sludge and beads were compared. Granulation was found to enhance the availability of the adsorbent but slow down the adsorption kinetics. The adsorption mechanisms of phosphate are ligand exchange and electrostatic attraction. This study provides a reference pathway for phosphate removal and resource utilization of iron sludge in waterworks.

Preparation and Phosphorus Removal Performance of Zr–La–Fe Ternary Composite Adsorbent Embedded with Sodium Alginate

Abstract:Using single metal salts of zirconium, lanthanum, and iron as raw materials and sodium alginate as a cross-linking agent, a new composite adsorbent was prepared via the co-precipitation method and embedding immobilization technology, and its phosphorus adsorption performance in wastewater was evaluated. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used for characterization, and a 0.5 mol·L−1 sodium hydroxide solution was used to regenerate the adsorbent. The experimental results demonstrated that the adsorption rate reached 99.88% when the wastewater volume was 50 mL, the initial concentration of phosphorus-containing wastewater was 5 mg·L−1, the pH was 5, the dosage of composite adsorbent was 0.2 g, and the adsorption time was 200 min. The prepared adsorbent could reduce the initial phosphorus concentration of 5 mg·L−1 to 0.006 mg·L−1 in simulated wastewater, and from 4.17 mg·L−1 in urban sewage to undetected (<0.01 mg·L−1), thus meeting the discharge requirements of the grade A standard of the Urban Sewage Treatment Plant Pollutant Discharge Standard (GB18918-2002). The adsorption process conformed to the Freundlich adsorption isothermal equation and quasi-second-order kinetic equation, and the adsorption reaction was exothermic and spontaneous. More importantly, after three lye regeneration tests, the removal rate of phosphorus in water remained above 68%, that is, the composite adsorbent could be reproducibly fabricated and recycled. The characterization results showed that the surface of the composite adsorbent was rough, with a complex pore structure. After phosphorus removal, the surface morphology of the composite adsorbent showed a similar honeycomb structure, with a P-H, P-O stretching vibration peak and a characteristic P2p peak. At the same time, the proportion of hydroxyl groups (M-OH) on the metal surface decreased after adsorption. Our findings thus demonstrate that the mechanism of phosphorus removal is mainly based on the coordination exchange reaction between phosphate and metal active sites and surface hydroxyl groups, resulting in the formation of granular phosphate deposits.

Abstract:To date, highly toxic heavy metal ions from wastewater seriously deteriorate the aquatic environment safety. This study proposes an adsorbent that can be adopted to remove heavy metal ions by combining environmentally friendly cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), sodium alginate (SA), and amino-rich polyethyleneimine using a ferric chloride- and glutaraldehyde-mediated crosslinking process and yielding a porous hollow bead (CS-Fe@PEI). The bead has a hollow porous structure according to SEM and a high nitrogen content of 13.85 wt% with numerous active adsorption sites, which are beneficial to the adsorption of heavy metal ions. Chromium was chosen as the main model pollutant for batch adsorption experiments. CS-Fe@PEI has excellent adsorption capacity of 526.32 mg/g for Cr(VI) at 298 K, which conforms with the Langmuir isotherm and pseudo-second-order model. The stable hollow structure allowed the regeneration of the CS-Fe@PEI beads for more than six cycles after Cr(VI) adsorption. According to FT-IR, Zeta, and XPS analyses, the beads effectively adsorbed the pollutants by electrostatic interaction, reducing the hypertoxic Cr(VI) to Cr(III). Furthermore, the beads also possessed a superior adsorption capacity for heavy metal cations (Cu(II), Cd(II), Ni(II), and Pb(II)). These results demonstrated that the fabricated CS-Fe@PEI beads were an efficient and reusable adsorbent, with a high potential for removing heavy metal ions from industrial wastewater.

Abstract:As a new functional polymer material with three-dimensional polymer network structure, hydrogel is widely used in the removel of heavy metal ions pollutants in sewage. In this work, semi-dissolution acidification sol–gel transition method was used to prepare the hydrogel with chitosan/sodium alginate/calcium ion (CTS/SA/Ca2+) physical cross-linked double network structure without adding chemical cross-linking agent. Meanwhile, hyperbranched polyamide-amine with different generations which was rich in amino groups were introduced to improve the adsorption capacity of hydrogel, and the CTS/PAMAM/SA/Ca2+ hydrogel adsorbent with no secondary pollution, environmental protection and high adsorption capacity was obtained. Experimental results show that the hydrogel with third-generation hyperbranched polyamide-amine have the best comprehensive performance. Its maximum adsorption capacities for copper ions and cadmium ions could reach 174.82 mg/g and 157.72 mg/g respectively. Furthermore, it was found that the adsorption behaviors of copper ions and cadmium ions on the hydrogel conformed to the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Langmuir adsorption isotherm model by studying the factors affecting the adsorption process. The CTS/PAMAM/SA/Ca2+ hydrogel has the advantages of high heavy metal ion adsorption capacity, uniform structure, and recyclability. As a functional material with simple preparation and excellent performance, it has good application potential and research value.

Abstract:Biobased adsorbents and membranes offer advantages related to resource efficiency, safety, and fast kinetics but have challenges related to their reusability and water flux. Nanocellulose/alginate composite hydrogel beads were successfully prepared with a diameter of about 3–4 mm and porosity as high as 99%. The beads were further modified with in situ TEMPO-mediated oxidation to functionalize the hydroxyl groups of cellulose and facilitate the removal of cationic pollutants from aqueous samples at low pressure, driven by electrostatic interactions. The increased number of carboxyl groups in the bead matrix improved the removal efficiency of the adsorbent without compromising the water throughput rate; being as high as 17 000 L h −1 m −2 bar −1 . The absorptivity of the beads was evaluated with UV-vis for the removal of the dye Methylene Blue (91% removal) from spiked water and energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) elemental analyses for the removal of Cd 2+ from industrial mining effluents. The modified beads showed a 3-fold increase in ion adsorption and pose as excellent candidates for the manufacturing of three-dimensional (3-D) column filters for large-volume, high flux water treatment under atmospheric pressure.

Abstract:Hydrogels are effective adsorbents for removal of heavy metal ions from wastewater due to their three-dimensional network and functional groups. In this paper, an eco-friendly hydrogel based on the polysaccharide extracted from the over-breeding macroalgae Enteromorpha prolifera was constructed and evaluated as an adsorbent for heavy metal ions. DFT calculation results confirmed that the carboxyl and sulfate groups of the Enteromorpha prolifera polysaccharides had certain chemical interactions with Pb 2+ , Cu 2+ and Cd 2+ , which guarantee the high adsorption capacity for them. The interpenetration strategy used to construct the polysaccharide-based double network hydrogel, through which the mechanical properties, adsorption performance and recyclability of the hydrogel get strengthened synchronously. Overall, the constructed hydrogel is a competitive candidate material for heavy metal ion adsorption because of its low cost and biocompatibility, through which an innovative application of Enteromorpha prolifera from waste to treasure has been realized.

Abstract:Valorizing solid waste for heavy metal adsorption is highly desirable to avoid global natural resources depletion. In this study, we developed a new protocol to valorize Radix Astragali residue (one of the Chinese medicine residues) into a low-cost, chemically robust, and highly permeable (ca. 90%) amino-laced porous double-network hydrogel (NH2-CNFs/PAA) for efficient Pb(II) adsorption. The NH2-CNFs/PAA showed (i) excellent Pb(II) adsorption capacity (i.e., 994.5 mg g-1, ~4.8 mmol g-1), (ii) fast adsorption kinetics (kf = 2.01 ×10-5 m s-1), (iii) broad working pH range (2.0-6.0), and (iv) excellent regeneration capability (~15 cycles). (v) excellent performance in various real water matrices on Pb(II) removal. Moreover, its high selectivity (distribution coefficient Kd ~2.4 ×106 mL g-1) toward Pb(II) was owing to the present of abundant amino groups (-NH2). Furthermore, the fix-bed column test indicated the NH2-CNFs/PAA can effectively remove 114.6 bed volumes (influent concentration ~5000 μg L-1) with an enrichment factor 10.9. The full-scale system modeling (i.e., pore surface diffusion model (PSDM)) has been applied to predict the NH2-CNFs/PAA performance on Pb(II) removal. Overall, we have provided an alternative "win-win" scenario that can resolve the Chinese medicine residues disposal issue by valorizing it into high performance gel-based adsorbents for efficient heavy metal removal.
Fabrication and Characterization of Magnetic Hydroxyapatite Entrapped Agarose Composite Beads with High Adsorption Capacity for Heavy Metal Removal

Abstract:Magnetic hydroxyapatite entrapped agarose composite beads (M-HAP/Agar composite beads) have been successfully synthesized by emulsification of magnetic HAP nanoparticles with agarose suspension. In the process, the magnetic HAP nanoparticles served as the main resource for high adsorption performance, which were constructed by surface modification of Fe3O4 with N-(phosphonomethyl)iminodiacetic acid (PM-IDA) and followed by coating with HAP. This strategy integrates the distinct advantages of large-size beads and magnetic response for easy recovery as well as nanoparticles for high adsorption capacity. The resulting M-HAP/Agar composite beads display large specific surface area (90 m2 g–1) and uniform spherical shape (150 μm). These magnetic hydroxyapatite nanoparticles in beads can provide more adsorption sites due to their suitable porous structure. As a result, the adsorbent exhibits excellent performance in adsorption of Pb2+, Co2+, and Cu2+, showing maximum binding capacities as high as 842.6, 105.1, and 71.6 mg g–1, respectively. All these results suggest that these magnetic nanoparticles entrapped in beads have a positive effect on improving the adsorption capacity. Moreover, the beads possess superparamagnetism and large size, allowing them to be easily recovered from solution. Therefore, this work provides a promising approach for the design and synthesis of multifunctional hydroxyapatite composite beads for highly efficient removal of heavy metals in the field of wastewater treatment.

Abstract:In this study, 7 Pseudomonas strains were isolated from a wastewater treatment plant, and the alginate production of Pseudomonas strains under different environmental conditions was evaluated. Subsequently, alginate-biomass hydrogel beads were prepared using alginate and biomass of Pseudomonas , and their adsorption performances and mechanism to Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ were analyzed. The results show that weakly acidic pH and 37 °C is favorable for alginate synthesis of Pseudomonas strains, and P. alcaligenes YLS18 have the highest alginate yield (29.4 mg/g). The adsorption processes of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ by hydrogel beads are well described by Langmuir model, indicating that the adsorption process is monolayer. Among the biomass of these strains, P. nitroreducens YLB32 shows the highest biosorption capacities, reaching 110.7 mg/g for Pb 2+ and 54.3 mg/g for Cd 2+ at pH 5. Alginate-biomass hydrogel beads obtain higher adsorption capacity to Pb 2+ (184.0 mg/g) and Cd 2+ (92.4 mg/g), and exhibit good reusability. The adsorption mechanism of Pb 2+ and Cd 2+ by hydrogel beads involves physical tapping of ions, electrostatic interactions, complexation, cation exchange and precipitation. These results provide strong support for promoting alginate recovery from activated sludge and for treating heavy metal wastewater.

Abstract:Renewable, green, and safe natural biopolymer-derived materials are highly desired for the purification of pollutants, but significantly improving their performance without the introduction of additional harmful chemicals remains a huge challenge. Based on the concept of “structure optimization design,” environment-friendly composite beads (named SA/PASP/RE) with excellent adsorption performance and recyclability were rationally constructed through a green ionic crosslinking route, using the completely green biopolymer sodium alginate (SA), sodium salt of polyaspartic acid (PASP), and the natural nanoclay rectorite (RE) as starting materials. The nano-layered RE was embedded in the polymer matrix to prevent the polymer chain from becoming over-entangled so that more adsorption sites inside the polymer network were exposed, which effectively improved the mass transfer efficiency of the adsorbent and the removal rate of contaminants. The composite beads embedded with 0.6% RE showed high adsorption capacities of 211.78, 197.13, and 195.69 mg/g for Pb(II) and 643.00, 577.80, and 567.10 mg/g for methylene blue (MB) in Yellow River water, Yangtze River water, and tap water, respectively. And the beads embedded with 43% RE could efficiently adsorb Pb(II) and MB with high capacities of 187.78 mg/g and 586.46 mg/g, respectively. This study provides a new route to design and develop a green, cost-effective, and efficient adsorbent for the decontamination of wastewater.

Abstract:The proper management of phosphorus (P) from wastewater is crucial for sustainable development consideration. Herein, we developed a strategy which combines adsorption via tailored adsorbents and electrochemically-driven struvite precipitation (ESP) for P recovery. Novel polydopamine-modified Ce-MOF/chitosan composite beads (PDA@Ce-MOF-CS) were prepared by a facile in situ growth of Ce-MOF crystals incorporated natural polymers and PDA coating. The physicochemical properties of PDA@Ce-MOF-CS were characterized. Both batch and fixed-bed column experiments were conducted to evaluate its adsorption performances. Representatively, PDA@Ce-MOF-CS performed good selectivity for P removal and exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity of 161.13 mg P/g at pH 3 and 318 K. Meanwhile, the developed adsorbent showed great reusability after ten regeneration cycles as well as good adsorption stability. The dominant mechanism for efficient P adsorption included electrostatic attraction, surface precipitation and ligand exchange. Interestingly, PDA@Ce-MOF-CS exhibited a remarkable adsorption capacity of 92.86 mg P/g by treating real P-rich electroplating wastewater, and the desorbed P in the eluate could be effectively recovered and converted into a solid fertilizer as struvite via ESP. Overall, this work provided a new research direction for P recovery from wastewater as struvite by combined technologies with the help of macroscopic MOF architectures.
