Abstract:Enhancing the flame retardancy and durability of cellulose fibers, particularly environmentally friendly regenerated cellulose fibers types like Lyocell fibers, is essential for advancing their broader application. This study introduced a novel approach to address this challenge. Cationic-modified Lyocell fibers (Lyocell@CAT) were prepared by introducing quaternary ammonium structures into the molecular chain of Lyocell fibers. Simultaneously, a flame retardant, APA, containing -COO-NH4+ and -P=O(O-NH4+)2 groups was synthesized. APA was then covalently bonded to Lyocell@CAT to prepare Lyocell@CAT@APA. Even after undergoing 30 laundering cycles (LCs), Lyocell@CAT@APA maintained a LOI value of 37.2 %, exhibiting outstanding flame retardant durability. The quaternary ammonium structure within Lyocell@CAT@APA formed asymmetric ionic bonds with the phosphate and carboxylate groups in APA, effectively shielding the binding of Na+ ions with phosphate groups during laundering, thereby enhancing the durability. Additionally, the consumption of Na+ ions by carboxylate groups further prevented their binding to phosphate groups, which contributed to enhance the durability properties. Flame retardant mechanism analysis revealed that both gas and condensed phase synergistically endowed excellent flame retardancy to Lyocell fibers. Overall, this innovative strategy presented a promising prospect for developing bio-safe, durable, and flame retardant cellulose textiles.

Abstract:Inspired by the intrinsically flame-retardant alginate fiber, a novel eco-friendly, biomass-based flame retardant was developed to endow lyocell fabrics with excellent flame-retardant properties by using bio-material glycine, aspartic acid as raw materials. Furthermore, glycine and aspartic acid were converted into sodium carboxylate (glycine-Na and aspartate-Na), respectively. Then, lyocell fabric was respectively modified by glycine-Na and aspartic acid-Na to prepare flame retardant lyocell fabric (G-lyocell-Na and A-lyocell-Na). The combustion test result showed that the modified fabrics exhibited self-extinguishing characteristics and high char-forming ability. In addition, compared to the control sample, the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) of G-lyocell-Na and A-lyocell-Na reduced by 36.5% and 49.9%. TG-IR and Raman spectra results indicated that both the condensed and gas phase played the flame retardant role. The electron withdrawing effect of the Na+ reduced the activation energy, promoted the pyran ring-opening reaction and reduced the decomposition temperature. Therefore, the flame retardant lyocell fabric decomposed and formed more char residue containing Na2CO3. The expanded char layer formed during combustion could effectively block the release of heat and the overflow of combustible gases, so that the modified lyocell fabric showed highly flame-retardant efficiency. In this work, a novel preparation strategy that can endow lyocell fabric with good flame retardant properties without traditional flame retardant elements such as P, Cl and Br was proposed, which was green, environment-friendly and in line with sustainable development.Graphic abstract

Abstract:Highly-efficient biodegradable cellulose-based flame retardants have great potential to be developed as new generation of sustainable flame retardants. In this study, phenylphosphorylated microcrystal cellulose (PhPMCC) and phenylphosphorylaminated MCC (PhPNMCC) as novel biobased flame retardants were successfully synthesized by phosphorylation and phosphoryl amination modification, respectively. The limited oxygen index (LOI) of Poly(lactide) (PLA) biocomposite with a loading of 4 wt% PhPMCC increased to 27.0%, and PLA/4wt%PhPMCC passed UL-94 V-0 rating. The PhPMCC and PhPNMCC exhibited good flame retardancy and melt-dripping suppression on PLA, and the proposed flame-retardant mechanism of the PLA/PhPMCC biocomposites was mainly attributed to that the phosphorus-oxygen radicals inhibited the decomposition rate of macromolecular chains of PLA, and a stable residue containing polyphosphate and polyaromatic ring had a synergistic barrier effect on the condensed phase. The tensile and bending strengths of PLA/PhPNMCC biocomposites were superior to those of PLA/PhPMCC composites because the interfacial reaction between the amino groups of PhPNMCC and PLA matrix provided them good interfacial compatibility. The preparation of highly efficient cellulose-based flame retardants and fully biobased PLA composite promote the utilization of renewable biomaterials.

Abstract:The design of flame-retardant cellulose fabrics suffered from deterioration on wearing performance and environmental issue. Here, we developed facile construction of bio-based high fire-safety cellulose fabrics (lyocell) that exploited the bio-based flame-retardant coating (APD) by adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and dicyandiamide (DCD) via ionic reaction. The rich phosphorus/nitrogen elements of APD enabled the excellent fire safety of APD/Lyocell. Specifically, the APD/Lyocell2 had a higher limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of 29.3 %, a lower peak of heat release rate (PHRR, decreasing by 66.6 %), and a reduced total heat rate (THR, lowered by 56.5 %) with respect to pure lyocell fabrics. Interestingly, the APD/Lyocell2 exhibited well flame-retardant durability via passing the vertical burning test after 100 rubs. The satisfactory flame-retardant behaviors of APD/Lyocell derived from the excellent synergistic effect on the gaseous-solid phases, where APD could release more non-flammable gasses and generate phosphoric acid, polyphosphoric acid, etc. to accelerate itself and cellulose dehydration into char residues during combustion. More importantly, the wearing performance of APD/Lyocell fabrics, such as handle, air permeability and tensile strength, etc. almost remained after treatment. The ease of operation and use of bio-based coating made it a promising option to obtain the practical lyocell fabrics with flame-retardancy.
Synthesis of Novel Arginine-Based Flame Retardant and Its Application in Lyocell Fabric

Abstract:Lyocell fabrics are widely applied in textiles, however, its high flammability increases the risk of fire. Therefore, to resolve the issue, a novel biomass-based flame retardant with phosphorus and nitrogen elements was designed and synthesized by the reaction of arginine with phosphoric acid and urea. It was then grafted onto the lyocell fabric by a dip-dry-cure technique to prepare durable flame-retardant lyocell fabric (FR-lyocell). X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis demonstrated that the flame retardant was successfully introduced into the lyocell sample. Thermogravimetric (TG) and Raman analyses confirmed that the modified lyocell fabric featured excellent thermal stability and significantly increased char residue. Vertical combustion results indicated that FR-lyocell before and after washing formed a complete and dense char layer. Thermogravimetric Fourier-transform infrared (TG-FTIR) analysis suggested that incombustible substances (such as H2O and CO2) were produced and played a significant fire retarding role in the gas phase. The cone calorimeter test corroborated that the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) declined by 89.4% and 56.4%, respectively. These results indicated that the flame retardancy of the lyocell fabric was observably ameliorated.

Abstract:Purpose of reviewThis work focuses on the use of antiretroviral agents to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV-1. Recent findingsTwo randomized clinical trials demonstrated that antiretroviral agents provided before exposure to HIV-1 offer substantial protection, ostensibly directly proportional to the concentration of antiretroviral therapy (ART) in the genital secretions. Intense focus on the use of HIV treatment as prevention has led to publication of modeling exercises, ecological studies, and observational studies, most of which support the potential benefits of ART. However, the logistical requirements for successful use of ART for prevention are considerable. SummaryART will serve as a cornerstone of combination prevention of HIV-1. Continued research will be essential to measure anticipated benefits and to detect implementation barriers and untoward consequences of such a program, especially increases in primary ART resistance.
Fully bio-based coating for nylon/cotton blend fabrics with improved flame retardancy and smoke suppression properties

Abstract:With the increasing requirements of eco-friendly flame retardant fabrics, fully bio-based flame retardants have attracted more and more attention. In this work, a fully bio-based flame retardant coating (PALC) was prepared by combining phytic acid and L-cysteine through ion exchange, which was then applied to nylon-cotton blends. The water contact angle (WCA) test indicates that the hydrophilicity of treated blend fabrics is significantly increased. The treated blend fabrics also exhibited excellent antibacterial property against E. coli and S. aureus . Besides, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of the treated blend fabric is increased to 27.2 % from 19.3 %, and the damage length is reduced to 5 cm from 30 cm. The analysis of cone calorimetry test results demonstrates that the total heat release (THR) and peak heat release rate (pHRR) values of the treated blend fabric are reduced by 62.6 % and 65.4 %, respectively, relative to CO/NY. At the same time, the PALC coating can also endow the blend fabric with smoke suppression properties. The total smoke production (TSP) and smoke production rate (SPR) values are reduced by 64.5 % and 67.6 %, respectively. The combination analysis of TG-FTIR, SEM and XPS proves that the phytic acid promotes the dense char layers forming, and L-cysteine generates non-combustible gases. This work provides an eco-friendly and organic solvent-free method for producing flame-retardant nylon/cotton blends with reduced smoke release.

Abstract:Addressing highly flammable and easily breeding bacteria property via environmentally friendly approach was critical for the large-scale application of lyocell fibers. Herein, a bio-based coating constructed by layer-by-layer deposition of adenosine triphosphate (ATP), chitosan (CS), and polyethyleneimine (PEI) was successfully fabricated to obtain excellent fire-resistant and antimicrobial lyocell fabrics (LBL/Lyocell). The resulted fabrics with add-on of 11.5 wt% achieved the limiting oxygen index (LOI) of 32.0 %. Meanwhile, compared with the pure lyocell fabrics, the peak of heat release rate (PHRR), total heat release (THR), and fire growth rate (FIGRA) of LBL/Lyocell fabrics decreased by 75.2 %, 61.0 % and 69.8 % in cone calorimetric test (CCT), respectively. By characterizing the gaseous products and solid residues, the presence of the ATP/CS/PEI coating could not only quickly form the dense expanded carbon layer by itself, but also promote the conversion of cellulose into thermal-stability residues, thus reducing the release of combustible substances during combustion and protecting the lyocell fabrics. In addition, LBL/Lyocell showed excellent antimicrobial properties with 99.99 % antibacterial rates against Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) and Escherichia coli (E. coli). This bio-based coating was a promising candidate for efficiently flame-retardant cellulose fibers with excellent antibacteria.

Abstract:A novel effective halogen-free flame retardant (FR) rich in phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) was synthesized via Mannich and esterification reaction of ethanolamine, glyoxal, phosphoric acid and urea, and used for the preparation of durable flame retardant lyocell fabric (FR-lyocell). Its chemical structure was characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectra, 1H and 31P nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. Inductively coupled plasma emission spectrometry and elemental analysis were conducted to test the phosphorous, carbon and nitrogen contents. The results confirmed that the FR was successfully synthesized and grafted on the lyocell fabric via firm P–O–C covalent bonds. The limiting oxygen index of the FR-lyocell treated with 30 wt% flame retardant finishing solution is 44.6%, demonstrating high efficiency flame retardancy. The thermo-gravimetric analysis indicated that FR-lyocell degraded preferentially than that of the control sample and the char residue was 38.8 wt% at 800 °C in N2 atmosphere. In addition, the cone calorimeter test revealed that FR-lyocell could not be ignited and the peak of heat release rate was much lower than that of original specimen. Furthermore, the char residue of FR-lyocell is compact and the ID/IG value is 0.771, exhibiting a super degree of carbonization. Moreover, TG-IR result revealed that FR played dual flame-retardant effect in the gaseous and condensed phases. The flame retardant finishing has a negligible impact on the mechanical properties of the fibers. In summary, FR-lyocell exhibits excellent flame retardancy and superior char forming capability, which is suitable for the preparation of flame retardant lyocell fibers.Graphic abstract

Abstract:As a renewable, abundant, and eco-friendly bio-based compound, phytic acid (PA) possesses high phosphorus content, which is a potential flame retardant for cellulosic fibers. Generally, PA is not efficient for cellulosic fibers due to strong acidity that results in greatly reduced strength and lack of soft hand. As proved elsewhere, the compounds with phosphorous and nitrogen was reported to be an efficient flame retardant and exhibited synergistic effect for cellulosic fibers. Therefore, PA was firstly reacted with urea to synthesize a novel green flame retardant containing a high level of phosphorus and nitrogen elements, i.e., phytic acid ammonium, then it was employed for lyocell fibers through pad-dry-cure finishing process. As expected, flame retardancy and durability of finished lyocell fabrics were considerably improved, as evidenced by an increase of limiting oxygen index value up to 39.2% and still 29.7% after 30 laundering cycles. TG–MS and TG–FTIR coupled techniques demonstrate that the formation of carbonaceous residue and non-combustion gases preferably generated during thermal pyrolysis process of finished lyocell fibers.

Abstract:Natural polysaccharide with intrinsic flame retardant, biodegradable and environment-friendly capability have received intensive attention. Sodium alginate (SA), is considered a promising synergist for improving fire retardance. Herein, flame retardant poly(vinyl alcohol) (FR-PVA) composites contained ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and SA are produced by facile blending method with an ultralow loading of 15%, which exhibit an ideal limited oxygen index (30.2%), UL-94 V-0 rating, high heat release reduction (42.7%) and self-extinguishing properties. SA not only retards the agglomeration of APP with negatively charged groups, but also enhances flame retardance by catalyzing the formation of char carbon. Hydrogen bonding between PVA and SA induced physical cross-linked network inhibit the movement of PVA molecules, thereby affording anti-dripping properties and mechanical strength. This work provides a new scenario of FR-PVA composites with high transparence, environmental friendliness, and fire safety, and applicable in packaging, home textiles and biomaterials.

Abstract:Polyester/cotton (T/C) blended fabrics are widely utilized in textile due to the dimensional stability and high elasticity provided by polyester, combined with the comfort and moisture absorption offered by cotton. However, simultaneously enhancing the flame retardancy and maintaining the physical properties of T/C blended fabrics for clothing and furniture applications remains a big challenge. This study introduces a bio-based flame-retardant coating using polyelectrolyte complexes (PEC) composed of ammonium vinyl phosphonate-grafted chitosan (AMVP-g-CS). The protonation degree of the PEC coating is controlled by adjusting the pH to solidify and stabilize the complex structure, preparing bio-based PEC flame retardant T/C blended fabric. Flame retardant analysis reveals that the coated fabrics achieved a limiting oxygen index of 30.5 % and a char length of 11 mm, indicating significantly improved flame retardancy. The combustible volatile substances are significantly reduced for the coated fabrics, achieving a gas-phase flame retardant effect, and forming an expansive char layer with thermal insulation and oxygen blocking properties. Importantly, physical analysis proves that the PEC deposition improved mechanical properties, satisfactory whiteness index and hand feeling of the fabrics. This work opens up a pragmatic and industrially feasible strategy for the development of CSs in the field of flame retardant coating.
Fabrication of flame retardant lyocell fibers based on carboxymethylation and aluminum ion chelation

Abstract:How to improve the flame retardancy of lyocell fibers has become an important issue in textile industry. Herein, lyocell fibers were firstly undergone etherification reaction between sodium chloroacetate and the hydroxyl groups of lyocell fibers to obtain carboxymethylated lyocell fibers (CM-lyocell), then the sodium ions of CM-lyocell were replaced by aluminum ions, and the flame retardant lyocell fibers (FR-lyocell) were prepared. Compared with lyocell fibers, the degradation temperature of FR-lyocell decreased by about 80 °C, and the char residue in nitrogen increased from 15.1 to 31.8 wt% at 800 °C. Importantly, the limiting oxygen index (LOI) value of FR-lyocell fabric was increased from 17.2 to 26.4%. Besides, the peak of heat release rate (PHRR) and total heat release (THR) of FR-lyocell had 77.4% and 76.3% reduction, respectively. The FR-lyocell can generate a highly graphitized char layer and release more water at high temperatures, which are beneficial to improving the flame retardancy of lyocell fibers. Moreover, the tensile test showed that the tensile strength of FR-lyocell decreased from 3.95 to 3.08 cN/dtex with a 22% reduction, showing good strength retention.

Abstract:Some crop by-products are considered to be promising materials for the development of novel biobased products for industrial applications. The flammability of these alternatives to conventional materials is a constraint to expanded applications. Polylactide (PLA) composites containing a combination of oxidized corn pith fiber (OCC) and a biobased flame retardant (PA-THAM) have been prepared via an in situ modification method. SEM/EDS, FTIR and TGA were performed to establish that PA-THAM was coated onto the surface of OCC. The mechanical properties, thermal stability and fire behavior of PLA-based biocomposites were investigated. The incorporation of 5 phr PA-THAM imparted biocomposite good interfacial adhesion and increased decomposition temperature at 10% mass loss by 50 °C. The flame retardant properties were also improved, as reflected by an increased LOI value, a UL-94 V-2 rating, reduction of PHRR, and increased formation of char residue. Therefore, the introduction of 5 phr PA-THAM can maintain a good balance between flame retardancy and mechanical properties of this PLA/OCC system.

Abstract:A novel biodegradable type flame retardants (PCA) based on phosphorylated cellulose derivatives was synthesized by the reaction of phosphorylated cellulose with ammonium hydroxide at room temperature. The chemical structure of PCA was characterized by Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). A series of poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) composites with various PCA contents were prepared by the method of casting evaporation. The incorporation of PCA could effectively improve the flame retardancy of PVA matrix. When the PCA content reached 15 wt%, the PVA/PCA composite met the UL-94 V-O classification and got the LOI value of 30.0. Thermal and combustion properties of PVA composites were investigated by TGA and MCC. The char yield of PVA composites with 15% PCA at 700 degrees C in air was as high as 19.71%. Moreover, the MCC result indicated that the incorporation of PCA could decrease effectively the value of peak heat release rate and total heat release of the PVA composites. The mechanical property of PVA/PCA composites was also investigated. The result showed that PVA/PCA exhibited excellent thermal properties and flame retardancy. (C) 2014 Published by Elsevier Ltd.
Fully bio-based flame-retardant cotton fabrics via layer-by-layer self assembly of laccase and phytic acid

Abstract:With the ever-increasing attention to eco-friendly flame-retardant finishing of cotton fabrics (CF), bio-based flame retardants have been urgently required. For this end, laccase (QM) and phytic acid (PA) were fabricated on CF via layer-by-layer self assembly. The successful deposition of binary coating on CF was characterized by FTIR and SEM-EDS. With the aid of biomass coating, the LOI value of CF/QM/PA was largely elevated to 43.0% with an increment of 129% as compared to pristine CF. Moreover, CF/QM/PA displayed self-extinguishing phenomenon upon removing the fire during the vertical burning tests, and the peak heat release rate (PHRR) of CF/QM/PA was remarkably dropped to 36 W/g from 310 W/g of CF with a reduction of 88.4%. Thermogravimetric analysis (TG) revealed that although the maximum thermal degradation rate of CF/QM/PA significantly reduced as compared to CF, the final char residue reached up to 39.0%. More importantly, in combination of the analyses of the gaseous products generated during the combustion process and the residual chars after combustion, it was proposed that QM/PA coating exerted flame-retardant activities both in the condensed phase and gas phase. Generally, this work provides a feasible and eco-friendly method for the flame-retardant finishing of cotton fabrics.

Layer-by-layer Assembled Thin Films Based on Fully Biobased Polysaccharides: Chitosan and Phosphorylated Cellulose for Flame-Retardant Cotton Fabric

Abstract:Polyelectrolytes multilayer (PEM) films based on fully biobased polysaccharides, chitosan and phosphorylated cellulose (PCL) were deposited on the surface of cotton fabric by the layer-by-layer assembly method. Altering the concentration of PCL could modify the final loading on the surface of cotton fabrics. A higher PCL concentration (2 wt%) could result in more loading. Attenuated total reflection Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray analysis directly showed that chitosan and PCL were successfully deposited onto the surface of cotton fabric. In the vertical flame test, the cotton fabric with 20 bilayers at the higher PCL concentration (2 wt%) could extinguish the flame. Microcombustion calorimetry results showed that all coated cotton fabrics reduced the peak heat release rate (HRR) and total heat release (THR) relative to the pure one, especially for (CH0.5/PCL2)20, which showed the greatest reduction in peak HRR and THR. Thermogravimetric analysis results showed that the char residue at temperatures ranging from 400 to 700 °C was enhanced compared to that in the pure cotton fabric, especially in the case of higher PCL concentration (2 wt%). The work first provided a PEM film based on fully biobased polysaccharide, chitosan and PCL on cotton fabric to enhance its flame retardancy and thermal stability via the layer-by-layer assembly method.
Advancing Flame Retardancy, Mechanical Properties, and Hydrophobicity of Epoxy Resins Through Bio-Based Cinnamaldehyde Derivative

Abstract:Developing flame retardants based on biomass materials to improve the flame retardancy and multifunctionality of epoxy resin (EP) is crucial. Herein, we synthesized a novel derivative, PPABCA, combining cinnamaldehyde and 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide to serve as flame retardants for EP. Incorporating 5 wt% PPABCA into EP (EP/PPABCA-5) demonstrated remarkable flame retardancy, with a limiting oxygen index of 33.7% and a V-0 rating in UL-94 test. It also reduced the peak heat release rate, total heat release, and peak CO2 production by 32.9%, 29.9%, and 42.8%, respectively. The enhanced flame retardancy was facilitated by the capture of phosphorus-containing free radicals coupled with dilution of combustible gas characterized by the blow-out phenomenon and formation of a dense char layer enriched with triazine and phosphorus. Furthermore, EP/PPABCA-5 exhibited enhanced flexural and tensile strengths by 20.5% and 16.5% compared to EP, attributed to the increased cross-linking density and pi-pi conjugation from the high rigidity of PPABCA, along with its good compatibility with EP. Additionally, the improved hydrophobic properties of PPABCA, confirmed by electrostatic potential analysis, further enhanced the hydrophobicity of EP composites. Overall, this work underscored a strategic development of multifunctional, bio-based flame retardant, showcasing efficient flame retardancy, enhanced mechanical properties, and boosted hydrophobicity in EP.
