Abstract:Carbonate-based electrolytes demonstrate safe and stable electrochemical performance in lithium-sulfur batteries. However, only a few types of sulfur cathodes with low loadings can be employed and the underlying electrochemical mechanism of lithium-sulfur batteries with carbonate-based electrolytes is not well understood. Here, we employ in operando X-ray absorption near edge spectroscopy to shed light on a solid-phase lithium-sulfur reaction mechanism in carbonate electrolyte systems in which sulfur directly transfers to Li 2 S without the formation of linear polysulfides. Based on this, we demonstrate the cyclability of conventional cyclo-S 8 based sulfur cathodes in carbonate-based electrolyte across a wide temperature range, from −20 °C to 55 °C. Remarkably, the developed sulfur cathode architecture has high sulfur content (>65 wt%) with an areal loading of 4.0 mg cm −2 . This research demonstrates promising performance of lithium-sulfur pouch cells in a carbonate-based electrolyte, indicating potential application in the future.

Abstract:Potassium–sulfur (K–S) batteries have attracted wide attention owing to their high theoretical energy density and low cost. However, the intractable shuttle effect of K polysulfides results in poor cyclability of K–S batteries, which severely limits their practical application. Herein, a bifunctional concentrated electrolyte (3 mol L−1 potassium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide in ethylene carbonate (EC)) with high ionic conductivity and low viscosity is developed to regulate the dissolution behavior of polysulfides and induce uniform K deposition. The organic groups in the cathode electrolyte interphase layer derived from EC can effectively block the polysulfide shuttle and realize a "solid–liquid–solid" reaction mechanism. The KF-riched solid-electrolyte interphase inhibits K dendrite growth during cycling. As a result, the achieved K–S batteries display a high reversible capacity of 654 mAh g−1 at 0.5 A g−1 after 800 cycles and a long lifespan over 2000 cycles at 1 A g−1.

Abstract:The development of Li-S batteries is greatly hindered by the polysulfide shuttling and sluggish sulfur redox kinetics, leading to low utilization of active materials and rapid capacity decay. Herein, a freestanding multifunctional interlayer, prepared by layer-by-layer assembling of the single-atom cobalt-anchored nitrogen-doped carbon nanosheets (NC@SA-Co) and dual network of carbon nanotube-cellulose nanofiber (CNT-CNF) hybrid, is proposed to effectively enhance the polysulfide immobilization and sulfur redox kinetics. The conductive CNT network acts as the physical barrier to confine the polysulfide diffusion and to facilitate the reuse of polysulfides. The oxygen-group-terminated CNF network allows the hopping of Li+ ion and suppresses the polysulfide crossover due to the strong electrostatic repulsion. Moreover, it is demonstrated that the 2D NC@SA-Co with numerous well-defined single sites of Co-N-4 can effectively serve as an electrocatalyst to boost the reversible reaction of polysulfides. As a result, the assembled Li-S batteries with the multifunctional interlayer deliver a high reversible specific capacity of 1160 mAh g(-1) at 0.1 C and an ultralow capacity decay of 0.058% per cycle over 700 cycles. Even with a high sulfur loading of 7.2 mg cm(-2), a high areal capacity of 8.3 mAh cm(-2) can be achieved.

Abstract:Potassium–sulfur batteries (KSBs) have garnered immense attention as a high-energy, cost-effective energy storage system. Nevertheless, achieving optimal sulfur utilization and long-term cycling is the primary challenge. To address some of the different challenges of KSBs, a potassium–sulfur (K/S) battery cathode was fabricated using MoS 2 , SiC, and S (Mo@Si@S) in a fixed ratio. The powder was characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscope (SEM), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping analysis. Coin cells were fabricated using K metal as an anode, and three different electrolytes were used to determine the effect of electrolytes on electrochemical performance. The battery using the KPF 6 electrolyte displayed the best electrochemical performance with a 713 mA h g −1 capacity compared to the other two electrolytes. The structure and morphological evolution of pristine, charged, and discharged states were explored using XRD, SEM, and EDX mapping. The results showed that sulfur was successfully diffused within the cathode, and K was homogeneously distributed, suggesting the good performance of the modified electrode.

Abstract:Potassium-sulfur (K–S) battery benefits from high specific capacities and natural abundance, which is deemed to be a rational choice to realize large-scale energy-storing applications. Here, a free-standing activated carbon fiber (ACF)@sulfur composite cathode () is designed for K–S batteries through a simple impregnation of melted sulfur into hierarchically porous ACF cloth. Taking advantages of the microstructural diversity manifested as various specific surface area, pore size and morphology, the yields remarkable energy-storing capability due to effective dispersion, adsorption and physicochemical anchoring of soluble polysulfides. More importantly, their fiber geometries endow them with continuous channels which facilitate fast reaction kinetics. The relationships between specific surface area of ACF and electrochemical performance are also probed. Compared with (1000 is denoted as SSA = 1000 m2 g−1 and so on) and , the electrode with high content of mesopores delivers high reversible capacity of 310 mA h g−1, indicating great promise for shuttle suppression. Besides, quantitative investigations prove that surface capacitive-controlled processes play crucial role and K2Sn (n = 1,2,3) is verified as the final discharging products through multiple characterizations, including ex situ XPS and HRTEM. Our findings aim to provide essential designs and electrochemistry interpretations of structurally-controlled ACF-based composite cathode for high-performance K–S batteries.

Abstract:Abstract Potassium-sulfur batteries attract tremendous attention as high-energy and low-cost energy storage system, but achieving high utilization and long-term cycling of sulfur remains challenging. Here we show a strategy of optimizing potassium polysulfides for building high-performance potassium-sulfur batteries. We design the composite of tungsten single atom and tungsten carbide possessing potassium polysulfide migration/conversion bi-functionality by theoretical screening. We create two ligand environments for tungsten in the metal-organic framework, which respectively transmute into tungsten single atom and tungsten carbide nanocrystals during pyrolysis. Tungsten carbide provide catalytic sites for potassium polysulfides conversion, while tungsten single atoms facilitate sulfides migration thereby significantly alleviating the insulating sulfides accumulation and the associated catalytic poisoning. Resultantly, highly efficient potassium-sulfur electrochemistry is achieved under high-rate and long-cycling conditions. The batteries deliver 89.8% sulfur utilization (1504 mAh g −1 ), superior rate capability (1059 mAh g −1 at 1675 mA g −1 ) and long lifespan of 200 cycles at 25 °C. These advances enlighten direction for future KSBs development.

Abstract:A micropore‐confined catalysis strategy is proposed to realize a smooth solid–solid sulfur conversion. This leads to high Coulombic efficiency and long‐term stability for the Li─S batteries both with the liquid carbonate and solid‐state electrolytes, revealing a promising solution for their practical applications. Achieving the solid–solid conversion of sulfur is a fundamental solution to eliminating the shuttling of soluble polysulfides and improving the cycling stability of lithium‐sulfur batteries. However, the sluggish solid reaction kinetics seriously challenge the battery performance. In this work, a micropore‐confined catalysis strategy to achieve the smooth solid–solid conversion of sulfur is proposed. It is realized by storing sulfur in a microporous carbon host with narrow pore size and uniformly distributed single‐atom Co catalytic sites. The microporous structure avoids the contact of electrolyte solvents with the inner sulfur, preventing the formation and dissolution of polysulfides and efficiently suppressing sulfur loss during cycling. The introduced single‐atom Co catalytic sites promote the charge transfer to accelerate the solid–solid conversion of sulfur. When coupled with a liquid carbonate electrolyte, the battery exhibits a remarkably high Coulombic efficiency (CE) of ≈99.88% and a minimal capacity decay rate of ≈0.016% per cycle for 1000 cycles at 0.5 C. Even when coupled with the solid‐state electrolyte, the battery still delivers a significantly high capacity of 1100 mAh g−1 and a remarkably high CE of ≈99.83% over 200 cycles. This work reveals a promising solution for developing practical stable Li─S batteries.

Heterostructured CoS2/SnS2 encapsulated in sulfur-doped carbon exhibiting high potassium ion storage capacity

Abstract:Metallic sulfides are currently considered as ideal anode materials for potassium-ion batteries by virtue of their high specific capacities. However, their low intrinsic electronic conductivity, large volume variation and dissolution of polysulfides in electrochemical reactions hinder their further development toward practical applications. Here, we propose an effective structural design strategy by encapsulating CoS2/SnS2 in sulfur-doped carbon layers, in which internal voids are created to relieve the strain in the CoS2/SnS2 core, while the sulfur-doped carbon layer serves to improve the electron transport and inhibit the dissolution of polysulfides. These features enable the as-designed anode to deliver a high specific capacity (520 mAh/g at 0.1 A/g), a high rate capability (185 mA h g-1 at 10 A/g) and lifespan (0.016 % capacity loss per cycle up to 1500 cycles). Our comprehensive electrochemical characterization reveals that the heterostructure of CoS2/SnS2 not only promotes charge transfer at its interfaces, but also enhances the rate of K+ diffusion. Additionally, potassium-ion capacitors based on this novel anode are able to attain an energy density up to 162 Wh kg-1 and ∼ 96 % capacity retention after 3000 cycles at 10 A/g.The demonstrated design rule combining morphological and structural engineering strategies sheds light on the development of advanced electrodes for high performance potassium-based energy storage devices.

Abstract:Solid phase conversion sulfur cathode is an effective strategy for eliminating soluble polysulfide intermediates (LiPSs) and improving cyclability of Li-S batteries. However, realizing such a sulfur cathode with high sulfur loading and high capacity utilization is very challenging due to the insulating nature of sulfur. In this work, a strategy is proposed for fabricating solid phase conversion sulfur cathode by encapsulating sulfur in the mesoporous channels of CMK-3 carbon to form a coaxially assembled sulfur/carbon (CA-S/C) composite. Vinyl carbonate (VC) is simultaneously utilized as the electrolyte cosolvent to in-situ form a dense solid electrolyte interface (SEI) on the CA-S/C composite surface through its nucleophilic reaction with the freshly generated polysulfides at the beginning of initial discharge, thus separating the direct contact of interior sulfur with the outer electrolyte. As expected, such a CA-S/C cathode can operate in a solid phase conversion manner in the VC-ether cosolvent electrolyte to exhibit a full capacity utilization (1667 mA h g-1 , ≈100%), a high rate capability of 2.0 A g-1 and excellent long-term cyclability over 500 cycles even at a high sulfur loading (75%, based on the weight of CA-S/C composite), demonstrating great promise for constructing high-energy-density and cycle-stable Li-S batteries.

Abstract:Implementing Li2CS3‐coated Li2S (Li2CS3@Li2S) as a cathode material offers desirable cyclic stability, enabled by a suppressed polysulfide shuttling and stable solid electrolyte interphase formation on the anode surface. The unique reaction mechanism of Li2CS3 alters the conventional Li–S reaction pathway to increase the discharge voltage.The development of practical lithium–sulfur (Li–S) batteries with prolonged cycle life and high Coulombic efficiency is limited by both parasitic reactions from dissolved polysulfides and mossy lithium deposition. To address these challenges, here lithium trithiocarbonate (Li2CS3)‐coated lithium sulfide (Li2S) is employed as a dual‐function cathode material to improve the cycling performance of Li–S batteries. Interestingly, at the cathode, Li2CS3 forms an oligomer‐structured layer on the surface to suppress polysulfide shuttle. The presence of Li2CS3 alters the conventional sulfur reaction pathway, which is supported by material characterization and density functional theory calculation. At the anode, a stable in situ solid electrolyte interphase layer with a lower Li‐ion diffusion barrier is formed on the Li‐metal surface to engender enhanced lithium plating/stripping performance upon cycling. Consequently, the obtained anode‐free full cells with Li2CS3 exhibit a superior capacity retention of 51% over 125 cycles, whereas conventional Li2S cells retain only 26%. This study demonstrates that Li2CS3 inclusion is an efficient strategy for designing high‐energy‐density Li–S batteries with extended cycle life.

Abstract:The sulfur doping strategy has been attracting extensive interest in potassium-ion battery carbon anodes for the dual potential of improving the capacity and kinetics of carbon anodes. Understanding the doping and potassium storage mechanism of sulfur is crucial to guide the structural design and optimization of high-performance sulfur-doped carbon anodes. Herein, presenting a laboratory-synthesized sulfur-doped hard carbon (SHC) with a sulfur content of 6.4 at. % as an example, we clarify the sulfur doping mechanism and reveal the role of sulfur in potassium storage. The high sulfur content of SHC stems from the selective substitution of sulfur for carbon and the residual trace of sulfur molecular fragments after sulfurization. As a result, thanks to the multifaceted roles of doped sulfur in potassium storage, about twice as much capacity, rate capability, and cycling stability is achieved for SHC against S-free hard carbon at the same test conditions. Furthermore, potassium-ion hybrid capacitors assembled based on an SHC anode demonstrate high energy/power density (139 Wh kg-1/7.3 kW kg-1), along with an extraordinary cycling stability.

Abstract:Potassium-sulfur electrochemistry represents a compelling energy storage technology due to its cost-efficient chemicals and unparalleled capacity. However, achieving high sulfur redox utilization (SRU) remains a great challenge during K+ storage due to K2Sn kinetics inertia. Here, for the first time, we unveil an aqueous K+-S electrochemistry, leveraging boosted K2Sn conversion kinetics in water. A stable two-electron charge transfer process is achieved via tuning K2S solubility. Spectroscopic evaluation and molecular dynamics simulations reveal a unique solid-liquid-solid conversion pathway (S ↔ K2S4 ↔ K2S), which effectively avoids soluble K2S shuttling. Consequently, an unprecedented K+ storage capacity of 1,619 mAh g−1 (ca. 96% SRU) can be achieved with 95% initial Coulombic efficiency, appealing cyclability over 500 times, and a high-energy density of 392 Wh kgS+Zn −1. These findings signify a paradigm shift and introduce transformative opportunities for the design of safe and high-energy aqueous batteries.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium-sulfur batteries (ASSLSBs) hold great promise for safe and high-energy-density energy storage. However, developing high-performance sulfur cathodes has been proven difficult due to low electronic and ionic conductivities and large volume change of sulfur during charge and discharge. Here, we reported an approach to synthesize sulfur cathodes with a mixed electronic and ionic conductivity by infiltrating a solution consisting of Li3PS4 (LPS) solid electrolyte and S active material into a mesoporous carbon (CMK-3). This approach leads to a uniform dispersion of amorphous Li3PS7 (L3PS) catholyte in an electronically conductive carbon matrix, enabling high and balanced electronic/ionic conductivities in the cathode composite. The inherent porous structure of CMK-3 also helps to accommodate the strain/stress generated during the expansion and shrinkage of the active material. In sulfide-based all-solid-state batteries with Li metal as the anode, this cathode composite delivered a high capacity of 1025 mAh g(-1) after 50 cycles at 60 degrees C at 1/8C. This work highlights the important role of high and balanced electronic and ionic conductivities in developing high-performance sulfur cathodes for ASSLSBs.

However, the random sulfur doping induces unresolved tradeoff between capacity and kinetics, which results from the fundamental difficulty in controllable sulfur incorporation using traditional approaches where breaking robust carbon-containing bonds is necessary. Herein, a pre-oxidation-anchored sulfurization approach is proposed to realize site-controlled and content-adjustable sulfur doping, demonstrating the optimum sulfur content of 9.8 at.% in sulfur-doped hollow carbon sphere (S-HCS). Intentional pre-oxidation introduces easy-to-break C-O/C-O-C bond-included oxygen-containing functional groups serving as anchoring sites for substitution with sulfur atoms. Consequently, S-HCS-9.8% achieves superior performance for K + storage (406.1 mA h g −1 at 0.1 A g −1 , 112.6 mA h g −1 at 5 A g −1 and 170 mA h g −1 after 2,000 cycles at 2 A g −1 ). The enhanced electrochemical performances are attributed to the largest interlayer spacing and highest disorder degree resulting from the thiophene-sulfur-dominated configuration at high sulfur content, which realizes high structure reversibility and stable solid-electrolyte-interface layer. This work provides new insights and guiding principles for the development of heteroatom-doped carbon anodes for next-generation high-performance energy storage applications.

Mo2C Electrocatalysts for Kinetically Boosting Polysulfide Conversion in Quasi-Solid-State Lithium-Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:Lithium-sulfur batteries (LSBs) suffer from sluggish reaction kinetics of sulfur-containing species and loss of soluble polysulfides (PSs) during cycling, especially in the case of liquid electrolytes. Here, we improve the kinetics of sulfur species by decorating Mo2C nanoparticles on carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as the host for sulfur active mass. In addition, by use of gel polymer electrolytes (GPEs) derived from in situ polymerization of 1,3-dioxolane (DOL) to mitigate the diffusion of PSs and improve the stability of Li stripping/plating. As a result, the sulfur cathodes are endowed with enhanced initial specific capacity and suppressed dissolution of sulfur species. The cells with CNT/Mo2C/S cathodes and GPE exhibit excellent electrochemical performance. The anodes cycled with GPE show remarkably enhanced lithium plating-stripping behavior. Benefitting from the synergistic effect, LSBs with higher energy density and improved durability are obtained, demonstrating a new approach for developing high-performance quasi-solid-state Li metal batteries.
Carbonized Bacterial Cellulose-Derived Binder-Free, Flexible, and Free-Standing Cathode Host for High-Performance Stable Potassium–Sulfur Batteries

Abstract:In search of improved advanced energy storage systems to meet our fast-growing energy demands for large-scale applications, potassium–sulfur batteries (KSBs) provide an essential alternative due to their high specific capacity apart from the low cost and abundance of potassium and sulfur. However, the insulating nature of sulfur, volume changes, and shuttle effect impede the development of these batteries. Further, the binder, carbon additives, and current collector used in the assembly of cells in a conventional approach decrease the energy density of cells. To overcome these challenges, we propose a binder-free and free-standing carbonized bacterial cellulose (CBC) as a cathode host that not only provides a conducting pathway but also has a porous network that is resilient to volume change. To ensure the uniform loading of sulfur, CBC was dipped into the sulfur/carbon disulfide solution, followed by melt diffusion at 160 °C to prepare a sulfur-infused CBC (S-CBC) cathode. This S-CBC cathode with an interconnected fiber network delivers a significantly high reversible capacity of 1311 mA h g–1 at a current density of 50 mA g–1. While connected for long-term cycling, the potassium sulfur cell delivers an initial reversible capacity of 475 mA h g–1 at 100 mA g–1. Once the cell is stabilized after 80 cycles, it maintains a capacity of 123 mA h g–1 with a capacity retention of 86% after 500 cycles. This enhanced electrochemical performance of flexible and free-standing S-CBC cathode is further analyzed using first-principles calculations. Moreover, the efficacy of the S-CBC cathode is also tested under high sulfur loading (1.6 and 2.4 mg cm–2, respectively) for the practical development of KSBs.

Abstract:A carbon layer confined sulfur composite (S@C NS) is synthesized with high sulfur content and large carbon layer space. Ca–S batteries utilizing S@C NS and a unique hybrid electrolyte showcase reversible solid‐solid sulfur conversion and hybrid CEI with porous microstructure, avoiding shuttle effect and boosting Ca2+ transfer kinetics, which thus leads to a record‐long life and high reversible capacity. Calcium‐sulfur (Ca‐S) battery is a promising candidate for large‐scale energy storage system. However, the development of long‐life room‐temperature Ca–S batteries is hindered by the lack of effective sulfur cathode and the incompatibility between electrodes and electrolytes, leading to irreversible sulfur conversion, inefficient calcium plating/stripping and improper cathode/anode‐electrolyte interfaces (CEI/SEI). Herein, a turbo carbon layer confined small‐molecule/covalent sulfur cathode (S@C NS) with a record‐high content of 65.7% and enlarged carbon layer space is prepared via a C/S co‐deposition process. By using such a cathode and optimizing interfacial electrochemistry in LiPF6/Ca(BF4)2‐based hybrid electrolyte, a record‐breaking long‐life room‐temperature Ca‐S battery is reported. The capacity reaches 824.6 mAh g−1 at 100 mA g−1 with a retention of 47.9% after 145 cycles, and 462.1 mAh g−1 at even 500 mA g−1. Mechanism studies demonstrated that a Li/Ca‐based hybrid CEI with porous microstructure is found to facilitate the transfer kinetics of Ca2+ across the CEI; Turbo carbon layers with large inter‐layer space and their strong confinement on small‐molecule sulfur enabled reversible solid‐state sulfur conversion in situ inside the cathode; An effective Li/Ca‐based hybrid SEI formed on anode, allowing reversible Ca plating/stripping with low deposition potential and small overpotential.

Abstract:Room-temperature sodium-sulfur batteries have attracted extensive attention as a cost-effective and high theoretical energy density next-generation energy storage systems . However, the insulating nature of sulfur, the sluggish reactivity of sulfur with sodium , and severe dissolution of polysulfide are the main challenges of this technology. Here, we propose a covalent sulfur bond breakage mechanism by bonding of sulfur chain onto the inner cavity of the sulfydryl-functionalized mesoporous hollow carbon spheres (MHCS) to efficiently promote the generation of short-chain sodium polysulfide and accelerate polysulfide redox kinetics. The covalent sulfur confined MHCS (S@MHCS) cathode delivers an unprecedented rate capability (250 mAh g −1 at 5 C) and exhibits excellent long-term cycling stability over 1000 cycles at 1 C with a high cathode loading of 5 mg cm −2 . Moreover, the associated electrochemical reaction mechanism is also revealed by ex-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and theoretical calculation. This work introduces a novel sulfur cathode design to enhance the performance of room-temperature sodium-sulfur batteries.
