Abstract:Lithium hydroxide halide antiperovskite Li-ion conductors are ideal model systems for the systematic investigation of the effect of grain, grain boundary and interfacial resistance on the total Li-ion conductivity in solid-state batteries. Their low melting point (<300°C) empowers the use of melting and solidification to prepare pellets with high relative density without additional sintering steps and with control over grain size. The tunability of the halogen anion site enables control over grain conductivity and interfacial chemistry, with minimal structural perturbation. In this study, we conduct a comprehensive investigation of Li-ion conduction in Li2OHCl(1-x)Brx antiperovskites. We identify Li2OHCl0.9Br0.1 as the composition with the highest Li-ion conductivity of 2.52 E-3 mS/cm at room temperature. We highlight how the thermal expansion coefficient can serve as an indicator for the presence of structural defects hard to probe directly with X-ray techniques and essential in improving bulk Li-ion conduction. The detrimental effect of grain boundaries on ionic conductivity is demonstrated by atomistic calculations and validated experimentally by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy on pellets with controlled grain size. In-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy experiments of Li2OHCl0.9Br0.1 demonstrate its chemical stability in contact with metallic lithium at room temperature. These insights provide design principles to improve Li-ion conductivity of lithium hydroxide halide antiperovskites.

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries have attracted widespread attention for next-generation energy storage, potentially providing enhanced safety and cycling stability. The performance of such batteries relies on solid electrolyte materials; hence many structures/phases are being investigated with increasing compositional complexity. Among the various solid electrolytes, lithium halides show promising ionic conductivity and cathode compatibility, however, there are no effective guidelines when moving toward complex compositions that go beyond ab -initio modeling. Here, we show that ionic potential, the ratio of charge number and ion radius, can effectively capture the key interactions within halide materials, making it possible to guide the design of the representative crystal structures. This is demonstrated by the preparation of a family of complex layered halides that combine an enhanced conductivity with a favorable isometric morphology, induced by the high configurational entropy. This work provides insights into the characteristics of complex halide phases and presents a methodology for designing solid materials.

Abstract:As the next generation of commercial automotive power batteries begins replacing liquid lithium batteries, many look towards all-solid-state batteries to pioneer the future. All-solid-state batteries have attracted the attention of countless researchers around the world because of their high safety and high energy density. In recent times, halide solid-state electrolytes have become a research hotspot within solid-state electrolytes because of their potentially superior properties. In this paper, in the framework of DFT, we investigated the atomic mechanisms of improving the ionic conductivity and stability of Li3YbCl6. Our calculations show that both trigonal and orthorhombic Li3YbCl6 exhibit wide electrochemical windows and metastable properties (100 meV/atom > Ehull > 0 meV/atom). However, the orthorhombic Li3YbCl6 can be stabilized at high temperatures by taking the vibrational entropy into account, which is supported by the experimental results. Moreover, it is expected that because of the Yb/Li synergistic interactions that, due to their strong mutual coulomb repulsion, influence the Li+ transport behavior, the orthorhombic Li3YbCl6 might have superior ionic conductivities with appropriate Li+ migration paths determined by the Yb3+ distribution. Also, higher ionic conductivities can be obtained by regulating the random distribution of Li+ ions. Further Li+-deficiency can also largely increase the ionic conductivity by invoking vacancies. This study helps gain a deeper understanding of the laws that govern ionic conductivities and stabilities and provides a certain theoretical reference for the experimental development and design of halide solid-state electrolytes.
Exploring superionic conduction in lithium oxyhalide solid electrolytes considering composition and structural factors

Abstract:Lithium (Li) oxyhalides have emerged as promising solid electrolyte candidates for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) due to their superior ionic conductivity and excellent cathode capability. However, the mechanism of Li transport in oxyhalides has remained unclear due to the complex nature of these compounds, which often comprise multiple phases such as crystalline and amorphous structures. Herein, a first-principles study using density functional theory and ab initio molecular dynamic simulation is performed to gain a theoretical insight into the structural behavior and conduction pathway in oxyhalide electrolytes. Li 2.5 ZrCl 5.5 O 0.5 electrolyte, as a case of study, is comprehensively investigated by considering various phases. It's revealed that the phase is energetically more stable and exhibits one order of magnitude higher Li conductivity compared to the C2/m phase among potential crystalline phases (1.63 mS cm −1 versus 0.24 mS cm −1 at room temperature). Interestingly, an amorphous phase with even higher ionic conductivity (~40 mS cm −1 ) can be generated by creating LiCl-deficient Li-Zr-O-Cl compounds. The remarkably high ionic conductivity suggests that the amorphous structure is likely the dominant conducting pathway, facilitating fast Li transport due the weak bonding between Li and other atoms. Cl anion mobility is also observed in the amorphous phase through mean square displacement (MSD) calculation, although further analyses revealed this to be localized vibration. This study sheds light on the nature of oxychloride structures and promotes a deeper understanding of the superionic conduction mechanism in oxychlorides, which will contribute to the development of advanced solid electrolytes and ASSBs.

Prediction of Novel Trigonal Chloride Superionic Conductors as Promising Solid Electrolytes for All-Solid-State Lithium Batteries

Abstract:Recently emerging lithium ternary chlorides have attracted increasing attention for solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) due to their favorable combination between ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability. However, a noticeable discrepancy in Li-ion conductivity persists between chloride SSEs and organic liquid electrolytes, underscoring the need for designing novel chloride SSEs with enhanced Li-ion conductivity. Herein, an intriguing trigonal structure (i.e., Li3SmCl6 with space group P3112) is identified using the global structure searching method in conjunction with first-principles calculations, and its potential for SSEs is systematically evaluated. Importantly, the structure of Li3SmCl6 exhibits a high ionic conductivity of 15.46 mS cm-1 at room temperature due to the 3D lithium percolation framework distinct from previous proposals, associated with the unique in-plane cation ordering and stacking sequences. Furthermore, it is unveiled that Li3SmCl6 possesses a wide electrochemical window of 0.73-4.30 V vs Li+/Li and excellent chemical interface stability with high-voltage cathodes. Several other Li3MCl6 (M = Er, and In) materials with isomorphic structures to Li3SmCl6 are also found to be potential chloride SSEs, suggesting the broader applicability of this structure. This work reveals a new class of ternary chloride SSEs and sheds light on strategy for structure searching in the design of high-performance SSEs.
Cloning, Pharmacological Characterization and Brain Distribution of the Rat Apelin Receptor

Abstract:The peptide apelin, recently isolated from bovine stomach tissue extracts, has been identified as an endogenous ligand of the human putative receptor protein related to the angiotensin receptor AT1 (APJ). In this article, we report cloning of the rat apelin receptor cDNA. The sequence shares 90% identity with the human APJ receptor and 31% with the rat AT1A angiotensin receptor. Subsequently a stable CHO cell line expressing the receptor fused at its C-terminal part with the enhanced green fluorescent protein (EGFP) was established, allowing to verify its cell surface distribution and to determine the affinity of various apelin and angiotensin fragments on the cloned receptor. As shown for the human APJ receptor, the rat apelin receptor expressed in the cell line was negatively coupled to adenylate cyclase. The apelin fragment K17F (Lys1-Phe-Arg-Arg-Gln-Arg-Pro-Arg-Leu-Ser-His-Lys-Gly-Pro-Met-Pro-Phe17) inhibited forskolin-stimulated cAMP production at sub-nanomolar concentrations whereas angiotensin II and angiotensin III were inactive. N-terminal elongation of K17F with a tyrosine or the N-terminal deletion of the first four amino acids did not modify the inhibitory action of K17F on cAMP production. In contrast, deletion of the first seven amino acids of K17F or substitution of phenylalanine by an alanine residue at the C-terminus completely abolished the activity of the peptide. In situ hybridization analysis of apelin receptor mRNA expression in the adult rat brain showed intense labeling in the hypothalamus, especially in the supraoptic and the paraventricular nuclei. The anterior and intermediate lobes of the pituitary were also highly labeled, as well as the pineal gland. Labeling was also found in extrahypothalamic structures such as the piriform cortex, the nucleus of the lateral olfactory tract, the central grey matter, the pars compacta of the substantia nigra, the dorsal raphe nucleus, the entorhinal cortex, the dentate gyrus and the Ammon’s horn. The hypothalamic and hypophyseal distribution of the receptor suggests an involvement of apelin in the control of neuro- and adenohypophyseal hormone release, whereas its presence in the pineal gland and in discrete higher brain structures points out to possible roles in the regulation of circadian rhythms and of water and food intake behavior.
Effective Regulation Towards Electrochemical Stability of Superionic Solid Electrolyte Via Facile Dual-Halogen Strategy

Abstract:Several halide electrolytes have come back into the spotlight with their high ionic conductivity, soft texture and compatibility with high-voltage electrodes. However, the instability with lithium metal has hindered their application in all-solid-state lithium-metal batteries (ASSLMBs). Thereby, it is urgent to find an efficient way to tackle this issue. Herein, we have simultaneously enhanced the kinetic stability towards lithium metal and intrinsic stability towards high-voltage cathodes for Li2ZrCl6 electrolytes via effective dual-halogen strategy while the ionic conductivity of electrolyte is not sacrificed due to the effects of morphology modification. Specially, the symmetric Li/Li2ZrCl5.2F0.8/Li cell can cycle stably for over 2000 h (0.1 mA cm-2, 0.5 mA h cm-2) and the modified electrolyte Li2ZrCl5.2F0.8 also shows higher oxidative stability than the original Li2ZrCl6. The insitu formed fluoride interphase (LiF, ZrFx) can account for the excellent kinetic stability at Li/Li2ZrCl5.2F0.8 interface while the improved oxidative stability can be attributed to the higher electronegativity of F element. Finally, the Li2ZrCl5.2F0.8 is also proved appliable in the Li/Li2ZrCl5.2F0.8/LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 battery in the form of stable and satisfied discharge capacity (-106.9 mAh g-1, the 20th - 65th cycle) due to the achievement of kinetic stability at Li/Li2ZrCl5.2F0.8 interface in the initial stage (the first - 19 cycles). The clever dual-halogen strategy proposed in this work can effectively enhance the electrochemical stability of electrolytes and foster the application of cost-effective Li2ZrCl6 halides in ASSLMBs.

Abstract:The crystal structures and ionic conductivities for widely studied metal halide solid electrolytes, as well as their synthesis methods and electrochemical/chemical stabilities, are systematically summarized, with a special focus on the interface issues that exist in the corresponding lithium metal solid‐state batteries. Furthermore, the typical characterization tools widely used for solid‐state interfaces and some in situ experimental characterizations are reviewed. Lithium metal solid‐state batteries (LMSBs) have attracted extensive attention over the past decades, due to their fascinating advantages of safety and potential for high energy density. Solid‐state electrolytes (SEs) with fast ionic transport and excellent stability are indispensable components in LMSBs. Heretofore, a series of inorganic SEs have been extensively explored, such as sulfide‐ and oxide‐based electrolytes. Unfortunately, they both have difficulty in achieving a satisfactory balance of conductivity and stability, and oxides suffer from a high impedance of grain boundaries, while sulfides encounter poor stability. Halide‐based solid electrolytes are gradually emerging as one of the most promising candidates for LMSBs due to their advantages of decent room temperature ionic conductivity (>10−3 S cm−1), good compatibility with oxide cathode materials, good chemical stability, and scalability. Herein, research and development of the widely studied metal halide SEs including fluorides, chlorides, bromides, and iodides are reviewed, mainly focusing on the structures and ionic conductivities as well as preparation methods and electrochemical/chemical stabilities. And then, based on typical metal halide solid electrolytes, we emphasize the interface issues (grain boundaries, cathode−electrolyte and electrolyte–anode interfaces) that exist in the corresponding LMSBs and summarize the related work on understanding and engineering these interfaces. Furthermore, the typical (or in situ) characterization tools widely used for solid‐state interfaces are reviewed. Finally, a perspective on the future direction for developing high‐performance LMSBs based on the halide electrolyte family is put out.
Theoretical Insights on the Comparison of Li-Ion Conductivity in Halide Superionic Conductors Li3MCl6, Li2M2/3Cl4, and LiMCl4 (M = Y, Sc, Al, and Sm)

Abstract:Recently, halide materials for solid electrolytes have received modest research interest. A variety of new halide electrolytes, such as Li3YCl6, Li3InCl6, and Li2Sc2/(3)Cl(4 )halospinel structure, and LiAlCl4, have been experimentally prepared with high Li-ionic conductivities close to 10(-3) S/cm and low activation energies. Although much effort (experimental and theoretical) has been devoted to uncovering the best combination of Li-M-X, less attention has been paid to the structural effects on the ionic conductivities and electrochemical stabilities. In this article, DFT and AIMD simulations are performed to do a comparative study on several halide electrolytes with selected structures, including the most common rock-salt Li3MCl6, spinel Li2M2/3Cl4, and LiMCl4. It is revealed that halospinel Li2M2/3Cl4 structures with cubic symmetry are three-dimension-ally conducting and mechanically stable superionic conductors. They exhibit an excellent Li-ionic conductivity within the range 0.26-19.0 mS/ cm with an activation energy lower than 0.20 eV (0.342-0.195 eV). Among them, Li2Sm2/3Cl4 is predicted to have an outstanding balance between the ionic conductivity and stability. The room-temperature ionic conductivity is calculated to be as high as 15.3 mS/cm, whereas the band gap and electrochemical stability window vs Li/Li+ reach 4.26 V, respectively, making it a promising candidate for practical applications as a superionic conductor in solid-state batteries.
Cubic Iodide LixYI3+x Superionic Conductors through Defect Manipulation for All‐Solid‐State Li Batteries

Abstract:Halide solid electrolytes (SEs) have attracted significant attention due to their competitive ionic conductivity and good electrochemical stability. Among typical halide SEs (chlorides, bromides, and iodides), substantial efforts have been dedicated to chlorides or bromides, with iodide solid electrolytes receiving less attention. Nevertheless, compared with chlorides or bromides, iodides have both a softer Li sublattice and lower reduction limit, which enable iodides to possess potentially high ionic conductivity and intrinsic anti-reduction stability, respectively. Herein, we report a new series of iodide SEs: LixYI3+x (x = 2, 3, 4, or 9). Through synchrotron X-ray/neutron diffraction characterizations and theoretical calculations, we revealed that the LixYI3+x SEs belong to the high-symmetry cubic structure, and can accommodate abundant vacancies. By manipulating the defects in the iodide structure, balanced Li-ion concentration and generated vacancies enables an optimized ionic conductivity of 1.04 × 10-3 S cm−1 at 25 °C for Li4YI7. Additionally, the promising Li-metal compatibility of Li4YI7 is demonstrated via electrochemical characterizations (particularly all-solid-state Li-S batteries) combined with interface molecular dynamics simulations. Our study on iodide SEs provides deep insights into the relation between high-symmetry halide structures and ionic conduction, which can inspire future efforts to revitalize halide SEs.

Halide Superionic Conductors for All-Solid-State Batteries: Effects of Synthesis and Composition on Lithium-Ion Conductivity

Abstract:Owing to their high-voltage stabilities, halide superionic conductors such as Li3YCl6 recently emerged as promising solid electrolyte (SE) materials for all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs). It has been shown that by either introducing off-stoichiometry in solid-state (SS) synthesis or using a mechanochemical (MC) synthesis method the ionic conductivities of Li3-3xY1+xCl6 can increase up to an order of magnitude. The underlying mechanism, however, is unclear. In the present study, we adopt a hopping frequency analysis method of impedance spectra to reveal the correlations in stoichiometry, crystal structure, synthesis conditions, Li+ carrier concentrations, hopping migration barriers, and ionic conductivity. We show that unlike the conventional Li3YCl6 made by SS synthesis, mobile Li+ carriers in the defect-containing SS-Li3-3xY1+xCl6 (0 < x < 0.17) and MC-Li3-3xY1+xCl6 are generated with an activation energy and their concentration is dependent on temperature. Higher ionic conductivities in these samples arise from a combination of a higher Li+ carrier concentration and lower migration energy barriers. A new off-stoichiometric halide (Li2.61Y1.13Cl6) with the highest ionic conductivity (0.47 mS cm-1) in the series is discovered, which delivers exceptional cycling performance (∼90% capacity retention after 1000 cycles) in ASSB cells equipped with an uncoated high-energy LiNi0.8Mn0.1Co0.1O2 (NMC811) cathode. This work sheds light on the thermal activation process that releases trapped Li+ ions in defect-containing halides and provides guidance for the future development of superionic conductors for all-solid-state batteries.

Abstract:Since the huge breakthrough in 2018, research on halide solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) has set off a new craze. In comparison with oxide and sulfide SSEs, halide SSEs have more balanced properties in various aspects, including ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability window, and moisture resistance. Herein, the overall knowledge and deep understanding of halide SSEs and their practical applications in all-solid-state batteries (ASSBs) are introduced. Firstly, the principle of screening halide SSE components is proposed. Among F, Cl, Br and I anions, the Cl anion is excellent owing to its suitable ionic conductivity and electrochemical stability window. The Sc, Y, and lanthanide elements are also more compatible with Cl anions in terms of electronegativity. Secondly, the structural design theory of halide SSEs with high ionic conductivity and the mechanism of Li ion migration are described. A monoclinic structure is more conducive to Li ion migration, compared with trigonal and orthorhombic structures. Additionally, substitution strategies for halide SSEs are discussed, mainly including dual-halogen, isovalent cation substitution, and aliovalent cation substitution. Furthermore, the mechanism of moisture resistance and synthesis method of halide SSEs are analyzed. Compared with the solid-state reaction and mechanochemistry method, wet chemical synthesis is more likely to achieve scale-up production of halide SSEs. Finally, the application prospects and challenges of halide SSEs in ASSBs are outlined.

Abstract:Solid electrolyte is the key component in all-solid-state-batteries that is currently limiting the commercialization of this technology. An ideal solid electrolyte should have high room temperature ionic conductivity, low electronic conductivity, good compatibility with both cathode and anode, good mechanical properties, high air and moisture stability and low manufacture cost. Among these requirements, the improvement of ionic conductivity is prioritized as the conductivity of most existing solid electrolyte is still much lower than that of conventional liquid electrolyte. The improvement of ionic conductivity and design and development of solid electrolyte materials are closely related to our understanding on the ionic diffusion mechanism in solids and the structure-property relationship. We believe that rational design of high-performance solid electrolyte should start from careful characterization and good understanding of the crystal structure. Here we report the crystal structure characterization on sulfides and halide solid electrolytes and the design and development of novel solid electrolytes based on our findings in structural characterizations. Ex situ high resolution synchrotron X-ray and neutron diffraction and pair distribution function analysis are used to understand the crystal structures in great details. In situ X-ray diffraction for different synthesis methods is coupled with variable temperature electrochemical impedance spectroscopy to understand the structure-property relationship in the solid electrolytes. The design, synthesis and electrochemical evaluation of several solid electrolytes will be presented and discussed.
Motif-Based Exploration of Halide Classes of Li5M10.5M20.5X8 Conductors Using the DFT Method: Toward High Li-Ion Conductivity and Improved Stability

Abstract:The development of all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries (ASSLIBs) is highly dependent on solid-state electrolyte (SSEs) performance. However, current SSEs cannot satisfactorily meet the requirements for high interfacial stability and Li-ion conductivity, especially under high-voltage cycling conditions. To overcome the intractable problems, we theoretically develop the chemistry of structural units to build a series of MX6-unit mixed framework Li5M10.5M20.5X8 (total 184 halides) for use as SSEs and recommend six halide candidates that combine the (electro)chemical stability with a low Li-ion migration barrier. Among them, three Li5M10.5M20.5F8 compounds (M1 = Ca and Mg; M2 = Ti and Zr) exhibit expansive electrochemical windows with a high cathodic limit (6.3 V vs μLi) and three-dimensional Li diffusion associated with moderate Li-migration barriers. To discuss their stability and compatibility (and in turn as a reference for experiments), the energy above the convex hull, the electrochemical stability window, the predicted (electro)reaction products, and the calculated reaction energies of Li5M10.5M20.5X8 in combination with Li-metal and several cathodes are tabulated. We stress that the importance of the cation-mixed effect and specific moieties for the halide anion leads to a design principle for a halide class of Li-ion SSEs. We provide insight into selecting the optimal halide anion and cations and open a new avenue of broad compositional spaces for stable Li-ion SSEs.

Abstract:A favorable orthorhombic phase in various Li–M–Cl (M = Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Tm) systems which triggers a significant increase in Li+ diffusivity and reduces the activation energy barrier for diffusion is revealed. The findings are expected to aid the discovery of fundamental chemical theories relating to the activity of rare earth metal halides and exploration of new materials with high Li+ conductivity.Understanding the relationship between structure, ionic conductivity, and synthesis is the key to the development of superionic conductors. Here, a series of Li3‐3xM1+xCl6 (−0.14 < x ≤ 0.5, M = Tb, Dy, Ho, Y, Er, Tm) solid electrolytes with orthorhombic and trigonal structures are reported. The orthorhombic phase of Li–M–Cl shows an approximately one order of magnitude increase in ionic conductivities when compared to their trigonal phase. Using the Li–Ho–Cl components as an example, their structures, phase transition, ionic conductivity, and electrochemical stability are studied. Molecular dynamics simulations reveal the facile diffusion in the z‐direction in the orthorhombic structure, rationalizing the improved ionic conductivities. All‐solid‐state batteries of NMC811/Li2.73Ho1.09Cl6/In demonstrate excellent electrochemical performance at both 25 and −10 °C. As relevant to the vast number of isostructural halide electrolytes, the present structure control strategy guides the design of halide superionic conductors.

Abstract:Halide solid electrolytes (SEs) have garnered significant attention due to their decent ionic conductivity and exceptional high-voltage stability. However, their structure–property relationship remains enigmatic. In this work, we synthesize a range of Li 3− x Lu 1− x Zr x Cl 6 (LLZC, 0 < x < 1) solid solutions to investigate the influence of lithium ion and vacant site contents on ionic conductivity. Contrary to our previous understanding, it is found that achieving a balance in lithium ion and vacant site content, rather than aliovalent substitution-induced structural changes that introduce stacking faults, plays a crucial role in optimizing ion transport in a hexagonal close packing (hcp) anion framework. This balance culminates in the highest ionic conductivity (1.5 mS cm −1 ) and lowest activation energy (0.285 eV) of LLZC. In addition, aliovalent substitution strengthens the oxidative stability of halide SSEs but reduces their reduction stability. Using LLZC as SEs and LiMn 2 O 4 as cathodes, cobalt-free all-solid-state batteries undergo 1000 cycles of stable cycling at 0.3 C with negligible capacity decay.

Abstract:Halide superionic conductors (SICs) are drawing significant research attention for their potential applications in all-solid-state batteries. A key challenge in developing such SICs involves exploring and designing halide structural frameworks that enable rapid ion movement. In this work, we show that the close-packed anion frameworks shared by traditional halide ionic conductors face intrinsic limitations in fast ion conduction, regardless of structural regulation. Beyond the close-packed anion frameworks, we identify that the non-close-packed anion frameworks have great potential to achieve superionic conductivity. Notably, we unravel that the non-close-packed UCl3-type framework exhibits superionic conductivity for a diverse range of carrier ions, including Li+, Na+, K+, and Ag+, which are validated through both ab initio molecular dynamics simulations and experimental measurements. We elucidate that the remarkable ionic conductivity observed in the UCl3-type framework structure stems from its significantly more distorted sites and larger diffusion channels than its close-packed counterparts. By employing the non-close-packed anion framework as the key feature in high-throughput computational screening, we also identify the LiGaCl3 as a promising candidate for halide SICs. These discoveries provide crucial insights for the exploration and design of novel halide SICs.
