Abstract:The flow regime of the Wimmera River was substantially modified due to the construction of a water supply reservoir. Samples of diatoms and soft algae and measurements of water quality were analysed at ten sampling sites for 3 years (between February 2012 and November 2014) along the MacKenzie River, a tributary of the Wimmera River, in different seasons and under different flow regimes, to understand the spatial and temporal variation in the relationship between algal communities, water quality and stream condition. Baseline information on algal communities and water quality was collected during base flow conditions, while experiments on the effect of water releases on algal communities were based on flow regime variations (manipulated flow regimes), specifically on the algae community structure, water quality and ecosystem function. Algal species composition changed along the river under different flow regimes and different seasons. Under base flow, Bacillariophyta (diatoms) were more abundant upstream, and filamentous green algae were more abundant downstream. The results showed that the algal composition shifted downstream after water release events. Chlorophyta (green algae), Cyanophyta (blue-green algae) and Chrysophyta gradually increased from upstream to downstream under base flow conditions and before water releases, whereas diatoms were greater upstream and increased downstream after water releases. The results are presented to tailor discharge and duration of the river flows by amalgamation of consumptive and environmental flows to improve the condition of the stream thereby supplementing the flows dedicated to environmental outcomes.

Abstract:Summary 1. A common goal of many environmental flow regimes is to maintain and/or enhance the river’s native fish community by increasing the occurrence of successful spawning and recruitment events. However, our understanding of the flow requirements of the early life history of fish is often limited, and hence predicting their response to specific managed flow events is difficult. To overcome this uncertainty requires the use of adaptive management principles in the design, implementation, monitoring and adjustment of environmental flow regimes. 2. The Barmah‐Millewa Forest, a large river red gum forest on the Murray River floodplain, south‐east Australia, contains a wide variety of ephemeral and permanent aquatic habitats suitable for fish. Flow regulation of the Murray River has significantly altered the natural flood regime of the Forest. In an attempt to alleviate some of the effects of river regulation, the Forest’s water regime is highly managed using a variety of flow control structures and also receives targeted Environmental Water Allocations (EWA). In 2005, the largest environmental flow allocated to date in Australia was delivered at the Forest. 3. This study describes the adaptive management approach employed during the delivery of the 2005 EWA, which successfully achieved multiple ecological goals including enhanced native fish spawning and recruitment. Intensive monitoring of fish spawning and recruitment provided invaluable real‐time and ongoing management input for optimising the delivery of environmental water to maximise ecological benefits at Barmah‐Millewa Forest and other similar wetlands in the Murray‐Darling Basin. 4. We discuss possible scenarios for the future application of environmental water and the need for environmental flow events and regimes to be conducted as rigorous, large‐scale experiments within an adaptive management framework.

Development of an ecohydraulics model for stream and river restoration

Abstract:At present, very little information is available about the design and maintenance of ‘natural’ river restoration schemes, combining hydraulic and ecological conditions. This field and numerical modelling study sought to redress this situation. A unique data set, containing hydraulic, substrate, and ecological parameters was collected over a three-year period for a 3km meandering section of the Afon Morlais, a small river in West Wales, UK. The reach was investigated commencing immediately after it had been reinstated over a disused opencast coal mine, with the aim being to evaluate the overall success of the restoration scheme and for calibration and validation of the ecohydraulics model developed in this study. Surveying results showed that the river bed was stable and chemical data analysis indicated that the water quality was good. Macroinvertebrates were collected and taxa also showed good water quality. A computer modelling tool was used and further developed to investigate the dependence of habitat creation on hydrodynamic factors. The two-dimensional finite difference model Depth Integrated Velocitiy and Solute Transport (DIVAST) was applied to several meanders, taking account of the cross-sectional velocity and depth distributions. A curvilinear computational mesh was applied. DIVAST was then linked with the stream ecology; through macroinvertebrate suitability and two-dimensional velocity, bed shear stress and the consequential habitat distributions of two macroinverbrate species were predicted. The integrated modelling tool enabled habitat predictions to be made and addressed current design guidelines for enhanced recolonisation processes in river regeneration projects.

Abstract:<span>To date, environmental flow strategies have predominantly been used in cases where a lack of available water has degraded the ecological quality and natural functioning of a river system. In this study, we used environmental flows on an urbanized watershed where flow volumes and flow rates have increased, and large (e.g. 100-year) event return periods become more frequent (∼10 years). Using an environmental flows strategy to model the amount of hydrological alteration, we assessed whether urban development and land cover changes have impacted the flow regime and the ecological health of this watershed. We reconstructed the flow regime at Lovers Creek (Barrie, Ontario, Canada) using three scenarios of urban development: a pre-settlement reference condition with 100% natural cover, mid-development with 6% urban cover and the current condition with 21% urban cover. We found that, in contrast to many other studies, increased urban cover has coincided with increased baseflow volumes, as well as increased volumes in other components of the flow regime. Of particular concern were the increased flow rate and volume of large events such as channel forming and riparian flows; an increased rate of change in event hydrographs, and a much shorter return period of large event storms (e.g. a 100-year event under reference conditions, is now a 10-year event in the current urbanized condition). In this watershed, restoration of flow to the reference condition is not practical; however, using improved stormwater management such as low-impact development technologies and green infrastructure may offset some of the alteration to the flow regime and mitigate future further alterations due to increased urbanization. As Lovers Creek has been identified as a critical coldwater stream habitat with brook trout, the results of this study are being used to assess changes in the ecological health due to increased urban cover, and to develop management strategies that assist in restoring a more natural flow regime in order to better protect both natural habitats and human infrastructure that are vulnerable to flooding caused by more frequent, increased volume flow events.</span>

Abstract:Relationship between mean water velocity and channel‐floodplain (lateral) connectivity for different floodplain inundation mechanisms. Increases in lateral connectivity using infrastructure, including engineered flooding and weir pool raising, decouple the natural relationship with water velocity and can lead to deleterious in channel outcomes. Relationships are developed between water velocity and ecological responses to inform the assessment of undertaking the different floodplain inundation actions. Regulation and water extraction have reduced river flow worldwide. In some rivers, this has led to reductions in the frequency and duration of floodplain inundation and, in turn, declining condition of flood‐dependent vegetation. One management response has been the construction and modification of infrastructure, or 'regulators', to engineer floodplain inundation at discharges that do not otherwise cause overbank flooding. Such actions have the potential to benefit floodplain vegetation, yet the atypical hydrodynamics of engineered floods may threaten riverine ecological processes and biota and increase the risk of adverse water quality. We investigated the influence of engineered flooding, and associated reductions to in‐channel hydraulics, on key ecological processes. Specifically, the transport and retention of larvae of an iconic fish species (Murray Cod, Maccullochella peelii), and a common microinvertebrate Trichocerca. Analysis of different flow management scenarios for floodplain inundation indicates that maintaining in‐channel velocities greater than 0.2 m s−1 produces higher Trichocerca densities, while velocities greater than 0.3 m s−1 creates suitable habitat for Murray cod larvae, thereby providing targets for avoiding detrimental effects of engineered floods on in‐channel biota. To evaluate responses to regulator operation, velocity was represented by a hydrological model using pre‐computed results from detailed hydrodynamic models. These results were used to relate upstream discharge and downstream water level to the proportion of each reach in the hydrological model meeting each velocity criterion. The model also represents changes in discharge, inundated area and a water quality parameter, dissolved oxygen. Model scenarios for engineered floodplain inundation were used to demonstrate the potential benefits, impacts and trade‐offs between the different metrics identified. The model framework enables a more holistic evaluation of infrastructure operation, extending analysis beyond discharge and inundated area to risks and benefits to key indicators of the ecosystem. This refined integrated approach to the management of regulated river systems may become critical in the future where water resources are projected to further decline under a changing climate.

Abstract:The ecology of floodplain ecosystems evolved according to the historical frequency and extent of inundation. In many dryland rivers, inundation frequency has reduced due to regulation, competition for water resources and climate change. In some rivers infrastructure has been constructed to enable temporary rises in water level and more frequent floodplain inundation, delivering environmental water to ecosystems that are dependent on surface water. During such events, the release of dissolved organic carbon (DOC) from inundated plant material may result in depletion of dissolved oxygen (DO). If the rate of DO depletion exceeds re‐aeration, hypoxic conditions can occur. Models have been developed to represent these processes, however, there is a wide range of chemical and biological interactions, and hence model parameters, involved. The aim of this research was: (1) identify the dominant parameters through sensitivity analysis, (2) design and implement a field monitoring program to quantify the inherent variability in those parameters, and (3) translate that input variability into the modelled DO, ultimately to support risk management decisions when planning delivery of environmental water. The results indicated that the mass of organic matter on a floodplain had the greatest impact on the modelled DO concentrations. Based on the field monitoring results, the steady state load of organic matter, that is, when the accumulation and decay rates are equal, was estimated, and vegetation mapping used to apply the field monitoring results across the floodplain for a 206 km reach of river of the River Murray, Australia. The model results from multiple, cumulative, operations identified one particular high‐risk operational site. The results are useful to prioritize monitoring effort to focus on the most sensitive model parameters and indicate that the likelihood of hypoxic conditions can be reduced through slower rates of inundation and timing events to coincide with periods with lower water temperature. The methodology developed can be transferred to other sites where hypoxic conditions are a potential outcome associated with delivery of environmental water. Sensitivity analysis, field monitoring and uncertainty analysis has translated the variability in key inputs through to risk of hypoxic blackwater events associated with managed floodplain inundation. The load of readily degradable organic material on the floodplain had the largest impact on simulated dissolved oxygen, and the rate of accumulation of this material was quantified for different vegetation types. With this information, the predictive modelling provides a tool to minimize the risk of hypoxic blackwater events during managed floodplain inundation.

Abstract:The construction of dams and other in‐stream structures for human use has altered river ecosystems worldwide. Dams degrade rivers, and environmental flow releases aim to mitigate flow alterations and restore rivers downstream of dams by returning elements of the pre‐regulation flow regime, resulting in an ecosystem that resembles a more natural state. We examined the responses of benthic invertebrate communities in riffles and pool‐edge habitats to an environmental flow regime (EFR) in the highly regulated Snowy River over 17 years (2000–2016). Benthic invertebrate communities significantly changed in response to prolonged increases in the magnitude of all components of the flow regime. The composition of the benthos in the regulated river became more dissimilar to pre‐EFR communities and more closely resembled those of nearby unregulated rivers. These changes were apparent in both riffle and pool‐edge habitats and were most pronounced when flow magnitudes were highest. Scrapers increased as flows increased, and in contrast, the relative abundances of gatherers declined with prolonged high flows and could be attributed to increased daily flows and high flow events mobilizing fine sediment and scouring benthic substrates. These results indicated that the EFR altered abiotic conditions or resources that previously limited invertebrate abundances, facilitating changes to the benthic community. Community changes we observed were in response to a flow regime that remained drastically lower than natural, demonstrating that restoration targets can be achieved with small flow increases that mimic natural flow patterns.

Abstract:Using turf mats, we determined sediment and seed deposition from 11 flow events of varying magnitudes in a heavily regulated river. Environmental flows delivered large amounts of sediment and diverse seed assemblages to in‐channel geomorphic features, potentially driving channel and vegetation restoration. Environmental flows are commonly provided in regulated rivers to maintain and restore riverine environments, including riverbank vegetation. Given the expense and political sensitivity of providing water for the environment, greater certainty regarding the expected benefits of environmental flows is required. We assessed the role of managed flows (for both environmental and consumptive purposes) in delivering sediment and plant propagules to facilitate riverbank recovery. Using artificial turf mats, we determined sediment and seed deposition from 11 flow events over 3 years of varying magnitudes, durations and timing in a heavily regulated lowland river in south‐east Australia. At three sites on the Goulburn River, Victoria, mats were placed on different geomorphic features along an elevation gradient (bars, benches, banks and ledges) before a flow event, and the sediment deposited during the event was analysed and assessed for seedling emergence. A total of 401 kg of sediment and 110 980 seeds were sampled. Mats that were inundated via managed flow releases had an order of magnitude more sediment, and around twice the richness of seed taxa, than mats that were not inundated. More sediment and seed taxa were deposited on low‐lying bars than on more elevated features, while seed composition but not abundance varied across features. A longer duration of inundation was associated with the deposition of more sediment, but not seed taxa or abundance. Unexpectedly, there was no evidence that managed flows delivered less sediment and seeds compared with unregulated tributary inflows. Our findings suggest that in regulated rivers, environmental flows are likely to be critical for providing the sediment and seed necessary to restore geomorphic conditions and promote plant recruitment. Longer flow durations are likely to provide more sediment, while high‐flow events may be particularly important for promoting diverse native riparian plant communities across the full range of in‐channel geomorphic features.

Abstract:Summary Flow alteration has reduced connectivity between many of the world's rivers and their floodplains, causing changes in riverine productivity and the isolation of floodplain wetlands. Environmental water is being increasingly used to help restore wetland habitats and their biota, including fish. However, some of these managed deliveries of water occur into discrete wetlands via artificial structures or at unseasonal times and may not deliver the expected gains in fish production. In the Murray River, south‐eastern Australia, we examined the relationship between attributes of watering and fish production (species‐specific recruitment, total abundance), at two time intervals: short term (6–8 weeks after watering) and at the end of the spawning season (April) for 26 discrete watering events. The study also recognised the importance of habitat in mediating fish responses to watering and examined whether fish abundance after environmental water delivery is better predicted by attributes of watering or wetland characteristics? We found that attributes of watering, including water source, its method of delivery and timing, best described fish recruitment (0+ abundance) and total fish abundance. Managers of environmental water may be able to optimise fish recruitment and abundance if they source their water from the river and deliver it during the spawning period of the target species via means that facilitate fish passage.

Integrated Approach to Mekong River Flow Modeling: Data Gaps and Climate Trends

Abstract:The transboundary Mekong River, spanning approximately 4800 km with numerous tributaries and floodplains, serves as a vital resource for power generation, fisheries, and agriculture. Despite its significance, the river's productivity faces disruption due to inadequate cooperation among riparian countries regarding data sharing, the uneven distribution of gauging stations, and data gaps for many parts of the river length. This disparity poses challenges in accurately modeling the river's natural runoff, flow characteristics, and the flooded area, navigating through mountainous and relatively flat terrains. To address this, we have developed an integrated modeling framework comprising a physically-based hydrological model and a hydrodynamic model. For 2500 km of the Mekong River’s mainstream, a highly accurate hydrodynamic model was developed. The produced velocity, water level, and discharge data were compared with gauging stations with continuous data records, showing high accuracy with NSE exceeding 0.93. Additionally, a point-by-point comparison of the yielded water level and discharge data by the hydrodynamic model was conducted with the low-resolution recorded data for stations lacking continuous time series data. Results indicated a high accuracy with an average NSE greater than 0.91, demonstrating the model's precision in capturing the dynamic behavior of the Mekong River. The hydrodynamic model's results were then used to fill data gaps in stations with significant data deficiencies, allowing the production of reliable data and sufficient gauging network distribution for the entire basin. These datasets, combined with recorded gauging data, served as the calibration stations for the developed physically-based hydrological model. This calibration aimed to assess the impacts of climate change on natural runoff, encompassing not only the mainstream but also tributaries and lake floodplains of the Mekong River. Findings revealed a discernible declining trend in natural runoff within the Mekong River over the specified four-decade period. This enhanced modeling capability is particularly crucial for accurately simulating dynamic river flows with insufficient continuous data. Our comprehensive approach contributes to a more precise understanding of the Mekong River's complex hydrological dynamics, supporting informed decision-making for sustainable resource management.

Abstract:Details are given of the increasing global public concern relating to hydro‐environmental issues and examples are cited of some of the water quality and contaminant problems now being considered by river managers on a regular basis. The limitations and restrictions of both physical and numerical hydro‐environmental models are discussed and concerns raised about the increasing use being made by non‐specialist river engineers and scientists of complex hydroinformatics tools – often with a minimal appreciation of the complex hydrodynamic, bio‐ and geo‐chemical, sediment transport or computational processes involved. General details are given of numerical models used for flow, water quality, sediment transport and heavy metal concentration predictions in river basin systems and particular emphasis is focused on the influence of some master variables on two key hydro‐environmental processes. These processes include the decay of coliform bacteria and the partitioning of heavy metals. Two case studies are then discussed. In the first of these studies the velocity field and faecal coliform levels were predicted for a hypothetical discharge into a freshwater lake, namely Cardiff Bay, U.K., where the effects of dynamic decay rates were found to be significant. In the second study velocity, suspended sediment and heavy metal concentration distributions were predicted along the Mersey Basin, U.K., with dynamic partitioning coefficients being found to give improved agreement between predicted and measured heavy metal fluxes.
Informing Environmental Flow Planning through Landscape Evolution Modeling in Heavily Modified Urban Rivers in China

Abstract:Worldwide, urban rivers suffer various degrees of ecological degradation. Rehabilitating heavily modified urban rivers requires holistic approaches, including environmental flow management. We examine the case of Lower Yongding River, Beijing’s mother river, which had dried up since the 1980s and is undergoing a flow replenishment experiment, receiving 342 million m3 of water during 2019–2020 for ecosystem enhancement. Considering the massive cost of replenishment, we address the urgent need to evaluate its outcomes and inform future management through an interdisciplinary modeling approach under the circumstance of severe data shortage. We simulated the study reach’s landscape evolution under five flow scenarios and assessed their ecological effects using the CAESAR-Lisflood model and habitat suitability index method. Despite overall minor morphological differences across scenarios, individual reaches presented pronounced physical changes. Higher-flow scenarios shaped a distinct channel in certain reaches, but historic channel modifications by mining and farming caused minimal responses in others. Additionally, higher-flow scenarios generally created larger and more evenly distributed habitat areas but showed a low payback given the higher flow volumes needed. Targeted channel-floodplain geomorphological restoration is essential for flows to generate desired ecological outcomes. The demonstrated modeling framework offers great promise, informing future rehabilitation actions for heavily modified urban streams.

Is my model fit for purpose? Validating a population model for predicting freshwater fish responses to flow management

Abstract:Models based on ecological processes (process‐explicit models) are often used to predict ecosystem responses to environmental changes or management scenarios. However, models are imperfect and need to be validated, ideally by testing their assumptions and outputs against independent empirical data sets. Examples of validation of process‐explicit models are rare. Recently, stochastic population models have been developed to predict the likely responses (over 10–120 years) of a riverine fish (golden perch, Macquaria ambigua) to flow management in the Murray–Darling Basin (MDB) in eastern Australia, one of the world's most regulated river basins. Declines in golden perch (and other species) are a direct consequence of altered hydrology, and managers require information to predict how fish will respond to possible future hydrological conditions to guide substantial investments in flow management. Here, we use two independent field data sets to validate our population model. We compared model predictions to observed trends to ask: (1) How do predicted population sizes and growth rates compare with observed data? (2) Does the correlation between predicted and observed population sizes and growth rates vary among populations? (3) Does the correlation between predicted and observed population sizes and growth rates vary across observed hydrological conditions? (4) How do modeled and observed fish movement rates compare? We found reasonable correlations between fish population sizes and growth rates as predicted by the model and observed in independent data sets for several populations (Aim 1), but the strength of these correlations varied among populations (Aim 2) and hydrological conditions (Aim 3). Predicted and observed fish movement rates were strongly correlated (Aim 4). Population models are frequently used in conservation decision‐making but are rarely validated. We demonstrate that: (1) validation can identify model strengths and weaknesses; (2) observed data sets often have inherent limitations that can preclude robust validations; (3) validation is likely to be more common if appropriate observed data sets are available; and (4) validation should consider the purpose of modeling. Wider consideration of these messages would contribute to more critical examinations of models, so they can be most appropriately used in conservation decision‐making.

Abstract:A particular focus of water-quality monitoring is the concentrations of sediments and nutrients in rivers, constituents that can smother biota and cause eutrophication. However, the physical and economic constraints of manual sampling prohibit data collection at the frequency required to capture adequately the variation in concentrations through time. Here, we developed models to predict total suspended solids (TSS) and oxidized nitrogen (NOx) concentrations based on high-frequency time series of turbidity, conductivity and river level data from low-cost in situ sensors in rivers flowing into the Great Barrier Reef lagoon. We fit generalized least squares linear mixed effects models with a continuous first-order autoregressive correlation to data collected traditionally by manual sampling for subsequent analysis in the laboratory, then used these models to predict TSS or NOx from in situ sensor water-quality surrogate data, at two freshwater sites and one estuarine site. These models accounted for both temporal autocorrelation and unevenly time-spaced observations in the data. Turbidity proved a useful surrogate of TSS, with high predictive ability at both freshwater and estuarine sites. NOx models had much poorer fits, even when additional covariates of conductivity and river level were included along with turbidity. Furthermore, the relative influence of covariates in the NOx models was not consistent across sites. Our findings likely reflect the complexity of dissolved nutrient dynamics in rivers, which are influenced by multiple and interacting factors including physical, chemical and biological processes, and the need for greater and better incorporation of spatial and temporal components within models.

Abstract:The flow regime of a river is well established as being one of the key drivers of riverine ecosystem type, diversity and condition. This is especially true of seasonal rivers that experience a cease to flow period over the dry months of the year. To effectively assess changes in the components of the flow regime, it is required that flow data be quantified into metrics for ease of assessment and to effectively relate changes to environmental outcomes. Previous methods have used large numbers of, often complex, flow metrics to assess the flow regime. These metrics are often highly internally correlated with each other, and their complicated nature makes communication difficult. We suggest that the high correlation and the targeted nature of ecological flow regime assessment means a smaller number of well selected metrics can be used more effectively that large suites of generic metrics. We report on a series of six flow metrics that cover the whole of the flow regime, are reported annually and are simple to assess and interpret. We further expand on the practical use of these metrics as environmental indicators in their application to the highly variable seasonal rivers of southern Australia by using a moving average approach rather than single years. This approach accounts for, and allows for, the interannual variability expected in these systems. Environmental water requirements are defined using upper and lower bounds of a moving average for each metric over an environmentally stable period. We argue that this approach represents a more representative and robust approach to the assessment of environmental water requirements that is simpler and easier to interpret and communicate that existing flow regime assessment methods.

Abstract:The extent and timing of many river ecosystem functions is controlled by the interplay of streamflow dynamics with the river corridor shape and structure. However, most river management studies evaluate the role of either flow or form without regard to their dynamic interactions. This study develops an integrated modelling approach to assess changes in ecosystem functions resulting from different river flow and form configurations. Moreover, it investigates the role of temporal variability in such flow–form–function trade‐offs. The use of synthetic, archetypal channel forms in lieu of high‐resolution topographic data reduces time and financial requirements, overcomes site‐specific topographic features, and allows for evaluation of any morphological structure of interest. In an application to California's Mediterranean‐montane streams, the interacting roles of channel form, water year type, and hydrologic impairment were evaluated across a suite of ecosystem functions related to hydrogeomorphic processes and aquatic habitat. Channel form acted as the dominant control on hydrogeomorphic processes, whereas water year type controlled salmonid habitat functions. Streamflow alteration for hydropower increased redd dewatering risk and altered aquatic habitat availability. Study results highlight critical trade‐offs in ecosystem function performance and emphasize the significance of spatio‐temporal diversity of flow and form at multiple scales for maintaining river ecosystem integrity. The proposed approach is broadly applicable and extensible to other systems and ecosystem functions, where findings can be used to inform river management and design testing.

Abstract:Water quality models are an emerging tool in water management to understand and inform decisions related to eutrophication. This study tested flow scenario effects on the water quality of Buffalo Pound Lake—a eutrophic reservoir supplying water for approximately 25% of Saskatchewan’s population. The model CE-QUAL-W2 was applied to assess the impact of inter-basin water diversion after the impounded lake received high inflows from local runoff. Three water diversion scenarios were tested: continuous flow, immediate release after nutrient loading increased, and a timed release initiated when water levels returned to normal operating range. Each scenario was tested at three different transfer flow rates. The transfers had a dilution effect but did not affect the timing of the nutrient peaks in the upstream portion of the lake. In the lake’s downstream section, nutrients peaked at similar concentrations as the base model, but peaks arrived earlier in the season and attenuated rapidly. Results showed greater variation among scenarios in wet years compared to dry years. Dependent on the timing and quantity of water transferred, some but not all water quality parameters are predicted to improve along with the water diversion flows over the period tested. The results suggest that it is optimal to transfer water while local watershed runoff is minimal.

Abstract:Across the globe, environmental water has been allocated with the purpose of preserving the health and vitality of floodplain vegetation. However, the influences of environmental water volume and environmental water delivery strategies have not been studied widely because of shortage of on‐ground monitoring data. Remotely sensed data can bridge this gap by providing long‐term and continuous information; Landsat imagery from 1988 to 2020 was used in this research. We used the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) as an indicator of physiological condition of lake‐fringing trees on the Hattah Lakes floodplain, south‐east Australia. We employed the random forest (RF) regression method to model the relationship between NDVI and various climate and hydrological factors, such as the volume of water delivered to the connected lakes system as environmental water allocations or natural floods. The RF models performed well overall, with a mean R2 value of 0.73. The analysis identified the monthly total of environmental water delivered 3 months prior to the Landsat image date as a more crucial factor than natural floods over the same period for driving vegetation condition. Environmental water from 3 months previously exerts a positive influence on NDVI until the volume reaches a specific threshold. We have observed significant improvements in floodplain vegetation through the current environmental water strategy, particularly since the construction of pumping infrastructure in 2013. We suggest that managers aim to inundate the lake fringing area every 3 years, specifically from August to September, by delivering environmental water up to the modelled threshold volume. Finally, the use of infrastructure has proven to be an effective and efficient method for irrigating floodplain lakes, leading to improvements in vegetation condition while conserving water resources.

Abstract:Between April and November 1982, 27 of 140 patients in a hemodialysis center in Louisiana were infected with rapidly growing mycobacteria; 14 had bacteremia alone, 3 had soft-tissue infections, 1 had an access-graft infection, and 9 had widely disseminated disease. Of 26 identified isolates, 25 were Mycobacterium chelonei ssp. abscessus, and one was an M. chelonei-like organism. One factor common to all patients was exposure to processed hemodialyzers (artificial kidneys). Environmental sampling of the water-treatment system showed widespread contamination with nontuberculous mycobacteria, which were also recovered from the patient's side (blood compartment) of five of 31 hemodialyzers that had been processed and were ready for use. The formaldehyde concentration was less than 2% in two of three such contaminated dialyzers tested. We hypothesize that patients became infected when their blood circulated through processed dialyzers that contained viable rapidly growing mycobacteria. This outbreak demonstrates that hemodialysis patients may be at risk for developing infections with rapidly growing mycobacteria and that such infections may go unrecognized when routine culture methods are used. It also emphasizes the importance of using effective procedures to disinfect dialyzers in hemodialysis centers.
