Abstract:Calcium-sulfate-aluminate and Portland cement (CSA-PC) hybrids with balanced engineering properties would be a preferable solution to mitigate the increasingly raised CO2 emissions by PC. Meanwhile, CSA hydrates are rather active to carbonation, therefore, it is urgent to clarify how accelerated CO2 curing (ACC) impacts the microstructure and engineering properties of CSA-PC hybrids. Herein, an ACC scheme with the CO2 gas pressure of 0.5 MPa and duration of 24 h was designed to treat hybrid CSA-PC pastes and mortars. Mechanical properties and capillary absorption of the ACC-treated CSA-PC hybrids were evaluated with profound analysis of microstructure and mineral characteristics by SEM, MIP, Nitrogen adsorption, XRD and TG/DTG. Results show that the ACC treatment can systematically increase compressive strength by up to 65.2 % and depress capillary absorption rate by up to 72.2 %, respectively, for the optimal CSA-PC mixes. Rapid carbonation of the cement clinkers and hydrates, e.g., calcium hydroxide, ettringite, and ye'elimite, results in precipitation of CaCO3 that refines the pore structure and improves the material compactness. 25 % replacement of PC with CSA shows the highest strength gain to CO2 uptake ratio (SGCUR) of 1.05. The findings deepen the mechanistic understandings in microstructure refinement of ACC-treated CSA-PC hybrids with lower CO2 emissions.

Abstract:INTRODUCTION: Mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) fulfills many of the ideal properties of a root end filling material and repair material for furcal perforation. However, its low cohesive property often makes it difficult to handle. To improve the handling properties of MTA root canal filling materials, MTA-like cement was made, and calcium lactate gluconate (CLG) aqueous solution was used to shorten the setting time and enhance the paste viscosity.METHODS: CLG solution was prepared by mixing lactic acid, glucono delta lactone, and calcium oxide by wet process. The crystalline property of the CLG powder was characterized by x-ray diffraction. The MTA-like cements were prepared by mixing Portland cement/bismuth oxide/gypsum (75/20/5); ProRoot white MTA (Dentsply Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK) was used as a control group. The influence of various liquid phases on initial setting time, handling properties, and pH value were investigated by a Vicat needle, questionnaire of operational hand feel, and pH meter, respectively.RESULTS: By using 23.1 wt% CLG solutions as a liquid phase, the setting time of white MTA was significantly decreased from 155.5 +/- 5.0 to 12.3 +/- 2.5 minutes. The pH values for hydrated white MTA with deionized water and 23.1 wt% CLG solutions were 12.29 +/- 0.02 and 11.81 +/- 0.04 at 72 hours.CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the addition of amorphous CLG-based liquid phase provides improvement in sealing ability as well as clinical manageability of dental filling materials.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: To investigate the physical (setting time, hardness, flowability, microstructure) and chemical (pH change, calcium release, crystallinity) properties and the biological outcomes (cell survival and differentiation) of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) mixed using different proportions of propylene glycol (PG) and water.MATERIAL AND METHODS: White MTA was mixed with different water/PG ratios (100/0, 80/20 and 50/50). Composition (XRD), microstructure (SEM), setting time (ASTM C266-13), flowability (ANSI/ADA 57-2000), Knoop hardness (100 g/10 s) and chemical characteristics (pH change and Ca2+ release for 7 days) were evaluated. Cell proliferation, osteo/odontoblastic gene expression and mineralization induced by MTA mixed with PG were evaluated. MTA discs (5 mm in diameter, 2 mm thick) were prepared and soaked in culture medium for 7 days. Next, the discs were removed and the medium used to culture dental pulp stem cells (DPSC) for 28 days. Cells survival was evaluated using MTS assay (24, 72 and 120 h) and differentiation with RT-PCR (ALP, OCN, Runx2, DSPP and MEPE) and alizarin red staining (7 and 14 days). Data were analysed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey's post-hoc analysis (a=0.05).RESULTS: The addition of PG significantly increased setting time, flowability and Ca2+ release, but it compromised the hardness of the material. SEM showed that 50/50 group resulted porous material after setting due to the incomplete setting reaction, as shown by XRD analysis. The addition of PG (80/20 and 50/50) was not capable to improve cell proliferation or to enhance gene expression, and mineralized deposition of DPSC after 7 and 14 days as compared to the 100/0.CONCLUSION: Except for flowability, the addition of PG did not promote further improvements on the chemical and physical properties evaluated, and it was not capable of enhancing the bioactivity of the MTA.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE: This study compared the effects of calcium chloride dihydrate (CaCl2.2H2O) on the physical properties and push-out bond strength of white Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (WMTA) and an experimental Malaysian Portland cement mixed with nano-zirconium oxide (nano-ZrO) [(radiopaque Malaysian Portland cement (RMPC). Mineral Trioxide Aggregate (MTA) was the first calcium silicate cement (CSC) introduced in dentistry, but up to date, it is an expensive cement with long setting time and causes tooth discolouration. Although Portland cement has been introduced as a potential substitute to MTA, it still faces some challenges such as long setting time and lack of sufficient radiopacity.METHODS: Four groups [WMTA, RMPC, fast-set WMTA (FS-WMTA) and fast-set RMPC (FS-RMPC)] were prepared. Initial setting time was evaluated using Vicat apparatus. The pH was measured at seven-day intervals. For discolouration potential, cements were packed in the pulp chamber of 46 extracted maxillary incisors. Spectrophotometric readings were obtained at seven-day intervals, and the rate of colour change (ΔE) was recorded. For the push-out bond strength testing, cements were applied in 48 sectioned root samples, and the test was performed using universal testing machine at crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min until bond failure. Statistical analysis was done according to the nature of each group of data using SPSS 26.RESULTS: Addition of CaCl2.2H2O decreased the initial setting times of both RMPC and WMTA significantly (p<0.05). The pH values of FS-WMTA and FS-RMPC were comparable to their non-accelerated counterparts ranging from 10 to 12. Discolouration effect was more obviously observed with WMTA and FS-WMTA with time compared to RMPC formulations. Push-out bond strength of the two materials also showed an increase with the addition of the accelerator, however, only FS-WMTA showed statistically significant difference compared to WMTA (p<0.05).CONCLUSION: The addition of CaCl2.2H2O improves the physical and mechanical properties of the newly formulated RMPC and WMTA. The RMPC formulation overcomes the discolouration potential of WMTA. (EEJ-2022-12-155).

Abstract:Recently, a paste-type premixed calcium silicate-based mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) product that quickly solidifies through a pozzolanic reaction was introduced to replace existing MTA, which has the disadvantage of a long setting time. In this study, we evaluated the effect of moisture content in the root canal on the setting time of premixed calcium silicate-based MTA in a simulated root canal environment using Endoseal MTA and Well-Root ST, among commercially available products. The setting time was measured according to ISO 6876/2012. A mold made using grades 2, 3, and 4 dental gypsum according to the classification of ISO 6873/2013 was used to reproduce the difference in moisture environment. Differences in moisture content were measured using micro-computed X-ray tomography (micro-CT). The micro-CT results showed that the moisture content was the highest and lowest in the grade 2 and 4 gypsum molds, respectively. Moreover, the setting time indicated by the manufacturer was the shortest for the grade 2 gypsum mold. Hence, the differences in moisture content significantly affect the setting time of MTA. This result can help set future experimental conditions and develop premixed calcium silicate-based MTA products.

Abstract:The purpose of the study was to examine the physicochemical properties of mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA)-like cements prepared from SiO(2), CaO, and Al(2)O(3) as matrices, and ZnO, MgO, and Fe(2)O(3) as additives. The MTA-like cements showed a significantly (p < 0.05) faster setting time (<14 minutes) than MTA when mixed with water, although there was a significant decrease (p < 0.05) in diametral tensile strength, ranging from 0.9 to 3.1 MPa in comparison to MTA (4.4 MPa). The addition of ZnO, MgO, and Fe(2)O(3) to the MTA-like cement led to a significantly (p < 0.05) higher strength than MTA-like cement without additives. The pH values of the MTA-like cements were changed from an initial 11 to a high of 13, similar to the results of MTA. Future characterization of the examined MTA-like cement with shortened setting time is needed before it is considered a viable candidate for dental root-end-filling applications.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of a sodium phosphate dibasic (Na2HPO4) setting accelerator on the properties of white-colored mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA). Setting times were measured by using a Gilmore needle. Changes in the pH value, diametral tensile strength, and phase composition of WMTA were evaluated. By using a 15% Na2HPO4 solution as a liquid phase mixed with WMTA, the setting time was significantly reduced to 26 minutes rather than the usual 3 hours. The 15% Na2HPO4 promoted WMTA to achieve a maximum diametral tensile strength of 4.9 MPa at an initial 6-hour aging time and 1 MPa for the cement mixed with water. The pH value of the 15% Na2HPO4-mixed cement was changed from an initial 11.0 to a high of 13.2, which was similar to the results using water. The results suggest that the Na2HPO4 solution may be an effective setting accelerator for WMTA.

Abstract:Abstract Background Insolubility is the main requirement for ideal root end filling material to provide perfect sealing ability. Moreover, alkalinity and bioactivity provide great chance for tissues healing and remineralization. So, the aim of this work was to evaluate the chemical composition, solubility, pH change, and calcium ion release of recently introduced commercial mineral trioxide aggregate (MTA) endodontic repair cement (Harvard, Universal HandMix MTA) compared with ProRoot MTA repair material. Methods Solubility was evaluated after 7- and 14-day immersion time of specimens in phosphate buffer saline solution (PBS); the mean weight loss was evaluated and solubility was calculated as a percentage of the weight loss. For assessment of pH change and calcium ion release polyethylene tubes filled with the materials were soaked in distilled water for 7 and 14 days. Measurement of pH change was done by analytical pH meter. Concentrations of calcium ion release were measured using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. Data were statistically analyzed by independent sample t test and paired sample t test at 5% significance level. Results Harvard MTA endodontic cement showed significant lower solubility and higher pH values compared with that of ProRoot MTA. ProRoot MTA exhibited significant higher calcium ion release value after 14 days ( P value ≤ 0.05). Conclusion Harvard, Universal HandMix MTA repair cement with its different chemical composition; exhibits a low solubility with enhanced alkaline pH value compared to ProRoot MTA repair material.

A computed tomography scan at 1.5 mo post-surgery showed that the fracture had healed with slight displacement of the bone fragments.

Abstract:Abstract Background The aim of this work was to study the influence of simulated body fluid (SBF) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (in Mueller Hinton Broth, MHB media) on the hydration reactions, formation of strätlingite (C 2 ASH 8 ) and morphology of a composite material based on nano-size tri-calcium silicate (C 3 S) and tri-calcium aluminate (CA) phases. The two experimental phases were prepared in laboratory by firing the required molar ratios of chemically pure reactants by solid-state reactions at elevated temperatures. Investigation of setting time, micro-hardness, pH of immersion solution, X-ray diffraction analysis, infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and cytotoxicity were also carried out. Results The results emphasized that the hydrated compounds of C 3 S phase can partly solve the problem of conversion process through the formation of the more stable and highly mechanical stratlingite hydrate (C 2 ASH 8 ) plates that results in an increase in hardness values for samples cured in distilled water (DW) at 37 °C. The SBF solution showed more strength loss than those cured in Pseudomonas aeruginosa microbe (MHB) medium bacterial solution. SEM and EDAX analyses emphasized the formation of hydroxyapatite at 37 °C. Conclusions The prepared cements are promising for dental application.
Evaluation of Mechanical Activation and Chemical Synthesis for Particle Size Modification of White Mineral Trioxide Aggregate

Abstract:Objective: Initial setting time is one of the most important properties of calcium silicate cements (CSCs) such as white mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA). This study aimed to evaluate the effect of two methods used to reduce the particle size of WMTA, mechanical activation and chemical synthesis. Methods: WMTA without bismuth oxide (WMTA-B) was provided and divided into four groups (n=5) including: WMTA-B, WMTA-B+10 min milling, WMTA-B+30 min milling, and sol-gel. In groups 2 and 3, the milling was performed by using tungsten carbide balls in a ratio 1:15 (w/w) and a vibration frequency of 30 Hz together with absolute ethanol. For the fourth group, polyethylene glycol (PEG), calcium acetate (Ca(C2H3O2)2), SiO2, and aluminum oxide (Al2O3) were used for the sol-gel process. After preparation, sample powders were mixed with distilled water and placed in cylindrical molds, covered with water-moistened gauze, and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours. The Vicat needle test analyzed the initial setting time. Data were analyzed by ANOVA and Tukey tests at a significance level of P<0.05. The correlation between particle size and setting time was determined. Results: Initial setting time of the sol-gel and WMTA-B+30 min milling was significantly lower than in the other two groups (P<0.05). A significant correlation was noticed between particle size and initial setting time (P<0.05). Conclusion: Sol-gel process introduces a promising alternative strategy for the reduction of initial setting time of CSC materials. While both methods increased surface area, mechanical activation was not as successful in reducing surface area and initial setting time as effectively as the sol-gel process.

Abstract:The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of two solutions differing by pH (6.4 and 4.0) and the use of a setting accelerator (15% Na2HPO4 solution) on the properties of white-colored mineral trioxide aggregate (WMTA). These studies indicated that pH 4.0 had a deleterious effect on the morphology of WMTA mixed with water, however, not for WMTA mixed with Na2HPO4. When immersed in a pH 4.0 solution for 7 days, WMTA mixed with water or Na2HPO4 achieved a diametral tensile strength of 7.9 and 9.0 MPa, respectively, which was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than those obtained at pH 6.4 (11.2 and 12.0 MPa) but significantly higher (p < 0.05) than day 0 samples (4.4 and 4.8 MPa). Mixing WMTA with the accelerator did not significantly affect the microstructure, solubility, or strength in an acidic environment.
Synthesis and Characterisation of Hemihydrate Gypsum–Polyacrylamide Composite: A Novel Inorganic/Organic Cementitious Material

Abstract:This study combined inorganic α-hemihydrate gypsum (α-HHG) with organic polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogel to create a novel α-HHG/PAM composite material. Through this facile composite strategy, this fabricated material exhibited a significantly longer initial setting time and higher mechanical strength compared to α-HHG. The effects of the addition amount and the concentration of PAM precursor solution on the flowability of the α-HHG/PAM composite material slurry, initial setting time, and mechanical properties of the hardened specimens were investigated. The structural characteristics of the composite material were examined using XRD, FE-SEM, and TGA. The results showed that the initial setting time of the α-HHG/PAM composite material was 25.7 min, which is an extension of 127.43% compared to that of α-HHG. The flexural strength and compressive strength of the oven-dried specimens were 23.4 MPa and 58.6 MPa, respectively, representing increases of 34.73% and 84.86% over values for α-HHG. The XRD, FE-SEM, and TGA results all indicated that the hydration of α-HHG in the composite material was incomplete. The incompleteness is caused by the competition between the hydration process of inorganic α-HHG and the gelation process of the acrylamide molecules for water, which hinders some α-HHG from entirely reacting with water. The enhanced mechanical strength of the α-HHG/PAM composite material results from the tight interweaving and integrating of organic and inorganic networks. This study provides a concise and efficient approach to the modification research of hemihydrate gypsum.

Abstract:This study investigates the effects of phosphoric acid (H3PO4), potassium dihydrogen phosphate (KH2PO4) and sodium dihydrogen phosphate (NaH2PO4) admixtures on the setting time, compressive strength and water resistance of magnesium oxychloride cement (MOC). MOC samples incorporating different admixtures are prepared, and their hydration products and microstructures are studied via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The results indicate that the addition of H3PO4, KH2PO4 and NaH2PO4 reduces the initial and final setting times and decreases the compressive strength. However, the compressive strength of MOC is higher than 30.00 MPa with the addition of 2.0 wt.% phosphoric acid and its phosphate after 14 days of air curing. The water resistance of modified MOC slurries is significantly improved. The softening coefficient of MOC with 2.0 wt.% H3PO4 is 1.2 after 14 days of water immersion, which is 3.44 times higher than that of the neat MOC. The enhancement in water resistance is attributed to the formation of amorphous gel facilitated by H3PO4, KH2PO4 and NaH2PO4. Furthermore, the improvement in water resistance is manifested as H3PO4 > KH2PO4 > NaH2PO4.

Abstract:A bstract Aim: To enhance mineral trioxide aggregate high plasticity (MTA HP), a commonly used dental calcium silicate cement, by incorporating selenium nanoparticles (SeNPs) known for their antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. The objectives included investigating the impact of SeNPs on the setting time and chemical properties of MTA HP. Materials and Methods: We performed a comprehensive study to formulate and profile SeNPs integrated into MTA HP. Diverse concentrations of SeNPs were introduced into MTA HP, and the commencement and culmination of the setting process were gauged employing a Gillmore needle cabinet. The chemical composition was validated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy with attenuated total reflectance and X-ray diffraction analysis. Results: The incorporation of SeNPs led to remarkable improvements. Notably, SeNPs positively affected the setting time of MTA HP, with faster setting times corresponding to higher SeNPs concentrations. Chemical analyses confirmed the successful integration of SeNPs with MTA HP. These enhancements make the material may be suitable for dental applications, especially due to its accelerated setting time. Conclusions: MTA HP incorporated with SeNPs represents a significant advancement in dental materials. Its faster setting time, combined with the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties of selenium, provides dental professionals with an efficient and time-saving option for complex treatments. This novel nanomaterial holds promise for improving dental procedures and patient outcomes.

Abstract:Aim: To evaluate the chemical activity of Portland cement and two other cement types with similar chemical composition to mineral trioxide aggregate with the aim of developing these cements for further applications in dentistry. Methodology: The chemical composition of the three cement types namely Portland cement, calcium sulpho-aluminate cement and calcium fluoro-aluminate cement was evaluated by elemental analysis using energy dispersive analysis with X-ray under the scanning electron microscope and by X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD) to determine the phases. The constituents of the hydration reaction by-products were evaluated by XRD analysis of the set cements at 1, 7, 28 and 56 days and by analysis of the leachate by ion chromatography. The pH of both cements and leachate was determined at different time intervals. Cements admixed with micro-silica were also tested to determine the effect of micro-silica on the reaction by-products. Results: All three cement types were composed of tricalcium silicate as the main constituent phase. The hydration reaction of Portland cement produced calcium hydroxide. However, this was not present in the other cements tested at all ages. Admixed micro-silica had little or no effect on the cements with regard to reaction by-products. The pH of all cements tested was alkaline. Conclusions: Both the experimental calcium sulpho-aluminate cement and calcium fluoro-aluminate cement had different hydration reactions to that of Portland cement even though calcium silicate was the major constituent element of both cement types. No calcium hydroxide was produced as a by-product to cement hydration. Micro-silica addition to the cement had no effect on the hydration reaction.
Ion release, porosity, solubility, and bioactivity of MTA Plus tricalcium silicate

Abstract:Introduction: The aim of this study was to evaluate MTA Plus (Prevest Denpro Limited, Jammu, India, for Avalon Biomed Inc) material's properties, namely calcium release, the pH change, solubility, water sorption, porosity, surface morphology, and apatite-forming ability after immersion in simulated body fluid. Methods: Two tricalcium silicate powders (MTA Plus and ProRoot MTA; Dentsply Tulsa Specialties, Tulsa, OK) and Dycal (Dentsply Caulk, Milford, DE) were tested. After incubation at 37°C and 99% relative humidity, calcium and hydroxyl ion release were tested up to 28 days in deionized water at 37°C. Water absorption, interconnected pores, apparent porosity, and solubility were measured after 24 hours of immersion in deionized water at 37°C. The morphologic and elemental analysis of the materials' surfaces were examined using an environmental scanning electron microscope/energy dispersive x-ray analysis after storage at 37°C for 1-28 days in simulated body fluid using the ISO 23317 method. Results: All 3 materials created an alkaline pH within 3 hours, which continued for 28 days. MTA Plus had a higher ion release than ProRoot MTA and Dycal; the use of the MTA Plus gel enhanced the initial calcium release and the increase of the pH. Both MTA materials were more porous, water soluble, and water sorptive than Dycal and more bioactive. After aging in simulated body fluid, MTA Plus material caused precipitation of an apparent calcium phosphate layer. Conclusions: MTA Plus showed improved reactivity and prolonged capability to release calcium and increase the local pH to alkaline values in comparison with ProRoot MTA. These pronounced ion-releasing properties are interlinked with its noticeable porosity, water sorption, and solubility and with the formation of calcium phosphorus minerals. The finer calcium silicate powder may explain the higher ion release, water sorption, porosity, and solubility of MTA Plus compared with ProRoot MTA. For clinicians, MTA Plus represents a lower-cost bioactive tricalcium silicate material with interesting chemical-physical properties that could be a convenient alternative to the conventional calcium silicate mineral trioxide aggregate-like cements.
