Abstract:Abstract The Mojave section of the San Andreas fault is the closest section to the megacity of greater Los Angeles. A major issue for the population is that the life-threatening hazard estimate of a future rare, large earthquake on this fault section is highly uncertain and untested at timescales and ground motions beyond limited historical recordings. Of relevance to this issue is that the nearby precariously balanced rocks at Lovejoy Buttes have survived these ground motions, despite the past tens of thousands of years of San Andreas fault earthquakes. Therefore, the fragility and age of these precariously balanced rocks provide crucial ground-motion constraints over the timescales of rare, large San Andreas fault earthquakes. We rigorously validate and update an earthquake hazard model for the Mojave section of the San Andreas fault using the independent observational data of precariously balanced rock survival at Lovejoy Buttes. The joint probability of survival of all five studied precariously balanced rocks was used to validate the hazard estimates and reweight the estimates using new Bayesian updating methods to deliver an improved, precariously balanced rock-informed earthquake hazard estimate. At an annual frequency of exceedance of 1×10−4 yr−1, equivalent to a mean return period of 10,000 yr, the precariously balanced rock survival data significantly reduced the mean hazard ground-motion estimate by 65% and the 5th–95th fractile uncertainty range by 72%. The magnitude of this inconsistency provides striking evidence for the need to reevaluate both the source and ground-motion components of our earthquake hazard model for the southern San Andreas fault.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The structural complexity of active faults and the stress release history along the fault system may exert control on the locus and extent of individual earthquake ruptures. Fault bends, in particular, are often invoked as a possible mechanism for terminating earthquake ruptures. However, there are few records available to examine how these factors may influence the along-fault recurrence of earthquakes. We present a new paleoearthquake chronology for the southern San Andreas fault at Elizabeth Lake and integrate this record with existing paleoearthquake records to examine how the timing and frequency of earthquakes vary through a major restraining bend. This restraining bend features a mature, throughgoing right-lateral strike-slip fault, two major fault intersections, proposed subsurface fault dip changes, and a >200 km long section of fault misaligned with the regional plate motion. The Frazier Mountain, Elizabeth Lake, Pallett Creek, Wrightwood, and Pitman Canyon paleoseismic sites are located on this relatively linear surface trace of the San Andreas fault between fault bends. Our paleoseismic investigations at Elizabeth Lake document 4–5 earthquakes, since ∼1100 C.E., similar to the number of earthquakes recorded at Pallett Creek. In contrast, the Frazier Mountain and Wrightwood sites each record 8–9 earthquakes during this same time period. Differences in earthquake frequency demonstrate that fewer earthquakes rupture the central portion of the restraining bend than occur near the fault bends and intersections. Furthermore, the similarity of earthquake records from the Bidart Fan paleoseismic site northwest of the restraining bend and the Frazier Mountain paleoseismic site suggests that the broad, 30° curve of the Big Bend section of the San Andreas fault exerts less influence on fault rupture behavior than the 3D geometry of the Mojave sections of the fault.

Abstract:Abstract We evaluate seismicity and tectonics along the San Andreas Fault (SAF) in southern California to elucidate ongoing near‐field crustal deformation processes. The principal slip surfaces (PSSs) or the fault core that accommodate major earthquakes, form the boundary between the tectonic plates. We analyze seismicity catalogs extending back to 1857, 1932, and 1981 with progressively improved magnitude of completeness and spatial resolution. The 1857 to present statewide catalog that is complete at M5.5+ documents minimal aftershock activity for the M w 7.9 1857 and 1906 M w 7.8 San Francisco earthquakes. The higher quality 1932 and 1981 catalogs show that the PSSs (the rupture zone) of the 1857 M w 7.9 Fort Tejon earthquake exhibits remarkable seismic quiescence both in the core and in the adjacent extended‐damage zone. Further south, the fault core is still aseismic but the shape of the SAF is more complex, and the rate of adjacent seismicity is much higher. This fault complexity and the seismicity rate are larger the more the strike of the SAF deviates from the Pacific plate velocity‐vector direction. The focal mechanisms of the SAF adjacent earthquakes are also heterogeneous and rarely have strikes and dips that are consistent with slip on the nearby PSSs. We infer that the southern SAF is locked, and a lack of seismicity at the core of the fault may be a standard feature of faults that almost exclusively accommodate high‐slip rates by producing major earthquakes. Correspondingly future aftershock sequences of major earthquakes on the southern SAF will likely have below average aftershock productivity.

Accelerated Stress Buildup on the Southern San Andreas Fault and Surrounding Regions Caused by Mojave Desert Earthquakes

Abstract:A sequence of four M-w > 6 earthquakes, including the 1992 M-w = 7.3 Landers and M-w = 7.1 Hector Mine earthquakes, occurred in the Mojave Desert in the 1990s in close proximity to the southern San Andreas fault, inducing stress changes on several of its segments. We calculate that coseismic slip combined with postseismic relaxation of viscous lower crust and/or upper mantle has led to a Coulomb stress increase of 2.3-3.5 bar on the San Bernardino Mountain segment of the southern San Andreas fault between 1992 and 2001, with a projected increase of 3.6-4.9 bar by the year 2020. In comparison, the calculated coseismic stress increase is 1.8 bar for this segment. This accelerated buildup of stresses is predicted to bring the San Bernardino Mountain segment, which last ruptured more than 190 yr ago, closer to a potentially major rupture. Meanwhile we project a net stress decrease of as much as -3.5 bar between 1992 and 2020 for the western Coachella Valley segment if the fault is governed by low effective friction, or an increase of 1.5 bar if the fault is governed by high effective friction. Coulomb stresses are calculated to decrease on the Mojave segment by as much as -1 bar between 1992 and 2020. Accelerated stress buildup is also predicted to occur on parts of the San Jacinto, Elsinore, and Calico faults. The pattern of the observed post-Landers aftershock clustering and the calculated Coulomb stress buildup on the Calico fault is similar to that noted in the Hector Mine region prior to the 1999 M-w = 7.1 earthquake. These results imply that the stress changes caused by an earthquake may still play a role in triggering future quakes in neighboring crust many years later through viscoelastic processes.
A unified perspective of seismicity and fault coupling along the San Andreas Fault

Abstract:The San Andreas Fault (SAF) showcases the breadth of possible earthquake sizes and occurrence behavior; in particular, the central SAF is a microcosm of such diversity. This section also exhibits the spectrum of fault coupling from locked to creeping. Here, we show that the observations of aseismic slip, temporal clustering of seismicity, and spatial variations in earthquake size distributions are tightly connected. Specifically, the creep rate along the central SAF is shown to be directly proportional to the fraction of nonclustered earthquakes for the period 1984–2020. This relationship provides a unified perspective of earthquake phenomenology along the SAF, where lower coupling manifests in weaker temporal clustering, with repeating earthquakes as an end-member. This new paradigm provides additional justification for characterizing the northwest ∼75 kilometers of the creeping segment as a transition zone, with potential implications for seismic hazard.

Abstract:Abstract We investigate the dynamic interactions between the Southern San Andreas Fault (SSAF) and a proximal normal fault (NF) beneath the Salton Sea in southern California. The NF, positioned near the SSAF terminus at Bombay Beach, exhibits 11–15 displacement events across 14 stratigraphic sequences, with a range of 0.2–1.4 m of vertical offset since ∼2–3 ka. Notably, four of these events may align temporally with SSAF earthquakes, raising questions about the possible interplay between the two faults. Utilizing dynamic rupture models, we analyze the coseismic interactions between the SSAF and NF, addressing under what conditions the SSAF induces slip on the NF. Our findings reveal that a suite of SSAF ruptures, particularly those propagating from north to south, can trigger slip on the normal fault and replicate observed vertical offsets. If the SSAF extends beneath the Salton Sea, earthquakes originating south of the NF intersection are less likely to trigger normal fault slip, although we cannot exclude this possibility. Some SSAF ruptures do not trigger discernible slip on the NF, rendering such events undetectable in the stratigraphic record. Our research contributes toward discussions regarding the seismic hazard in southern California, shedding light on the interplay between the SSAF and NF.

Abstract:The central San Andreas Fault (CSAF) exhibits a simple linear large-scale fault geometry, yet seismic and aseismic deformation features vary in a complex way along the fault. Here we investigate fault zone behaviors using geodetic observation, seismicity and microearthquake focal mechanisms. We employ an improved focal-mechanism characterization method using relative earthquake radiation patterns on 75,164 Ml ≥ 1 earthquakes along a 2-km-wide, 190-km-long segment of the CSAF, from 1984 to 2015. The data reveal the 3D fine-scale structure and interseismic kinematics of the CSAF. Our findings indicate that the first-order spatial variations in interseismic fault creep rate, creep direction, and the fault zone stress field can be explained by a simple fault coupling model. The inferred 3D mechanical properties of a mechanically weak and poorly coupled fault zone provide a unified understanding of the complex fine-scale kinematics, indicating distributed slip deficits facilitating small-to-moderate earthquakes, localized stress heterogeneities, and complex multi-scale ruptures along the fault. Through this detailed mapping, we aim to relate the fine-scale fault architecture to potential future faulting behavior along the CSAF.
Indications and implications of a borehole seismic monitoring result of the San Andreas Fault foresee future earthquake prediction

Abstract:The Parkfield M6 earthquake predicted from 1985 by the USGS to happen by 1993 happened 11 years later in 2004 instead. Till today, satisfactory answers to why this earthquake was mis-predicted have not been found. Seven months after the earthquake, we deployed a seismic array in the SAFOD main hole to monitor the San Andreas Fault. During a 13 days period, we recorded 220 earthquake events. By analyzing the projected hypocenters of 100 earthquake events, we found three main active sub-faults, namely SAF1, SAF2, and SAF3, with SAF1 being the normally regarded SAF. During the monitoring period, there was an earthquake migration trend that shows the move of SAF1 drags SAF2, which in turn drags SAF3, to slip and dip downwards. This could be reflected by the result of a geological trenching across the SAF. On SAF1, the smaller earthquakes tended to occur earlier in southeast and the larger earthquakes tended to occur later in northwest, which could indicate the existence of strong asperities. However, the new earthquakes on SAF2 were overall remarkably smaller, which could indicate that during the 2004 M6 earthquake the main underground rupture took place on SAF2, which could extend with a bend near Parkfield town to the Southwest Fracture Zone, and further to include the seemingly isolated 2004 M6 hypocenter. The possible prevailing of this triple active sub-faults model in the Parkfield area may account for 12, 24 or 36 (instead of a single 22 years as previously believed) recurring years of M6 earthquakes, depending on how many of these active sub-faults have basically absorbed the tectonic stress. In less than 0.1% of the earthquake's last intermission time, and at just one location, our borehole seismic monitoring has revealed so much insightful information that earthquake prediction may be feasible if the fault is monitored in boreholes at more locations and for longer periods of time.

Abstract:Many ruptures across many scales The period of seismic quiescence in Southern California was rudely interrupted by the Ridgecrest earthquake sequence in July 2019. Ross et al. mapped the slip sequences during the magnitude 6.4 and 7.1 earthquakes that shook the region. They found that ruptures of a few larger, but many smaller, faults occurred during both earthquakes. The Ridgecrest sequence calls for rethinking seismic hazard, as multifault ruptures are not usually considered when assessing seismic risk. Science , this issue p. 346

Abstract:The N20°W‐trending Panamint Valley fault zone is linked to the N60°W‐trending Hunter Mountain strike‐slip fault and the Saline Valley fault system, which represents one of the three major fault systems accommodating active crustal extension in the southern Great Basin. A 25 km‐long zone of fault scarps along the southern Panamint valley fault zone is recognized as the surface rupture zone associated with the most recent prehistoric earthquake. The displacement associated with the most recent event, determined through six detailed topographic maps of offset features, is 3.2±0.5 m, and a number of larger offsets, in range of 6–7 m and 12 m, are also observed. If the larger displacements represent, respectively, two and three events, each of ∼3 m, then the fault zone appears to be associated with a characteristic earthquake, which we estimate from the length of the rupture zone and the displacement to be between (Ms) 6.5 and 7.2. The Holocene slip rate is 2.36±0.79 mm/yr, is determined from the displacement of two alluvial features whose maximum age is estimated from pluvial shorelines. Assuming a characteristic earthquake model, the recurrence interval is between 860 and 2360 years. The Holocene slip rate appears to be similar to the 4 million year slip rate of 2–2.7 mm/yr (determined from the Hunter Mountain fault), which we suggest reflects the relatively constant tectonics in this region over the last 4 million years. We further speculate that this supports the San Andreas discrepancy in that the Holocene slip rate of the San Andreas fault probably represents its very‐long term (several Ma) slip rate. The total slip vector of the southern Panamint Valley fault system is oriented toward ∼N35°W, making this a predominantly strike‐slip fault. In conjunction with the N60°W orientation of the Hunter mountain strike‐slip fault, we suggest that the displacement vector for the southern Great Basin is toward the NW, consistent with results from VLBI data, rather than WNW as determined by combining VLBI and geological data. This in turn suggests that the coastal California deformation component involves, respectively, less shortening and more strike‐slip displacement perpendicular and parallel to the San Andreas fault than is currently proposed.

Abstract:We present results from the tomographic analysis of seismic data from the Parkfield area using three different inversion codes. The models provide a consistent view of the complex velocity structure in the vicinity of the San Andreas, including a sharp velocity contrast across the fault. We use the inversion results to assess our confidence in the absolute location accuracy of a potential target earthquake. We derive two types of accuracy estimates, one based on a consideration of the location differences from the three inversion methods, and the other based on the absolute location accuracy of “virtual earthquakes.” Location differences are on the order of 100–200 m horizontally and up to 500 m vertically. Bounds on the absolute location errors based on the “virtual earthquake” relocations are ∼50 m horizontally and vertically. The average of our locations places the target event epicenter within about 100 m of the SAF surface trace.

Abstract:We use UAVSAR interferograms to characterize fault slip, triggered by the Mw 7.2 El Mayor-Cucapah earthquake on the 1 San Andreas Fault in the Coachella Valley providing comprehensive maps of short-term geodetic surface deformation that complement in situ measurements. Creepmeters and geological mapping of fault offsets on Durmid Hill recorded 4 and 8 mm of average triggered slip respectively on the fault, in contrast to radar views that reveal significant off-fault dextral deformation averaging 20 mm. Unlike slip in previous triggered slip events on the southernmost San Andreas fault, dextral shear in 2010 is not confined to transpressional hills in the Coachella valley. Edge detection and gradient estimation applied to the 50-m-sampled interferogram data identify the location (to 20 m) and local strike (to <4°) of secondary surface ruptures. Transverse curve fitting applied to these local detections provides local estimates of the radar-projected dextral slip and a parameter indicating the transverse width of the slip, which we equate with the depth of subsurface shear. These estimates are partially validated by fault-transverse interferogram profiles generated using the GeoGateway UAVSAR tool, and appear consistent for radar-projected slip greater than about 5 mm. An unexpected finding is that creep and triggered slip on the San Andreas fault terminate in the shallow subsurface below a surface shear zone that resists the simple expression of aseismic fault slip. We introduce the notion of a surface locking depth above which fault slip is manifest as distributed shear, and evaluate its depth as 6-27 m.

Are Foreshocks Fore‐Shocks?

Abstract:Abstract Foreshocks are spatially clustered seismic events preceding large earthquakes. Since the dawn of seismology, their occurrence has been identified as a possible mechanism leading to further crustal destabilization, hence, to major failures. However, several cases occurred without any previous anomalous seismic activity, so that the hypothesis of foreshocks as reliable seismic precursors fails to pass statistical tests. Here, we perform an all‐round statistical comparative analysis of seismicity in Southern California to assess whether any differences can be identified between swarms and foreshocks. Our results suggest that extremely variable seismic patterns can forerun mainshocks, even though they tend to be preceded by clusters with more numerous events spread over larger areas than swarms and with a wider range of magnitudes. We provide a physical explanation of such dissimilarity and conclude, despite it, that foreshocks can hardly be reliable short‐term precursors of large earthquakes in California.

Evidence for faulting and fluid-driven earthquake processes from seismic attenuation variations beneath metropolitan Los Angeles

Abstract:Seismicity in the Los Angeles metropolitan area has been primarily attributed to the regional stress loading. Below the urban areas, earthquake sequences have occurred over time showing migration off the faults and providing evidence that secondary processes may be involved in their evolution. Combining high-frequency seismic attenuation with other geophysical observations is a powerful tool for understanding which Earth properties distinguish regions with ongoing seismicity. We develop the first high-resolution 3D seismic attenuation models across the region east of downtown Los Angeles using 5,600 three-component seismograms from local earthquakes recorded by a dense seismic array. We present frequency-dependent peak delay and coda-attenuation tomography as proxies for seismic scattering and absorption, respectively. The scattering models show high sensitivity to the seismicity along some of the major faults, such as the Cucamonga fault and the San Jacinto fault zone, while a channel of low scattering in the basement extends from near the San Andreas fault westward. In the vicinity of the Fontana seismic sequence, high absorption, low scattering, and seismicity migration across a fault network suggest fluid-driven processes. Our attenuation and fault network imaging characterize near-fault zones and rock-fluid properties beneath the study area for future improvements in seismic hazard evaluation.

Abstract:ABSTRACT We present a new, 3D representation of the Long Beach restraining bend system along the Newport–Inglewood fault (NIF), Los Angeles, California. The NIF is an active strike-slip system that cuts over 60 km through densely populated metropolitan Los Angeles and poses one of the greatest deterministic seismic hazards in the United States (California Division of Mines and Geology, 1988). Part of the NIF sourced the 1933 M 6.4 Long Beach earthquake, which claimed ∼120 lives and remains one of the deadliest events in California history (Barrows, 1974; Hauksson and Gross, 1991). The event is thought to have arrested at Signal Hill within the Long Beach restraining bend, which is formed by a left step in the NIF (Hough and Graves, 2020). Events that rupture through Signal Hill could generate larger (M ≈7) events that pose a significant hazard to urban Los Angeles. Our analysis integrates a diverse range of datasets, including over 4200 fault and horizon penetrations from 243 wells, 2D seismic reflection surveys, field maps, machine-learning-based tomography studies, and the U.S. Geological Survey QFaults surface traces. We show that the fault system in Long Beach has three main strike-slip segments connected by orthogonal reverse faults. The strike-slip faults are nonvertical and nonplanar, merge at depth, and extend through the seismogenic crust. The Long Beach restraining bend system presents numerous rupture pathways and arrest points that NIF earthquakes may follow. We apply a novel, map-based restoration to quantify how much total slip has passed through each of the fault segments. About 375 m of total slip is partitioned into the three main fault strands, including the Reservoir Hill fault (≈75 m), the Northeast Flank fault (≈120 m), and the Cherry Hill fault (≈209 m). This slip partitioning informs our understanding of the tendency of ruptures to involve different fault segments or arrest at specific junctures.

Abstract:Nonvolcanic tremors have been detected deep beneath the San Andreas fault (SAF) near Cholame, California. The tremors are modulated by small stress changes induced by Earth tides and regional and teleseismic earthquakes, implying elevated pore fluid pressure in the tremor zone. In this area, tremors lie beneath the seismogenic zone, limiting the usefulness of local earthquakes for resolving seismic velocity properties in the tremor zone. Station-pair double-difference tomography that uses differential tremor arrival times is used, for the first time, to provide new detailed information about the complexity of the lower-crust and upper-mantle transition and the occurrence of deep tremors in zones of localized low shear wave velocity anomalies. The anomalies may represent zones containing high-pore pressure fluids that migrate into the tremor zone episodically from the southwest and that are ultimately derived from dehydration of deep serpentinized mantle wedge material. These results improve our understanding of the tremor process, why tremors are concentrated in specific zones along the SAF, and possible relationships between tremors and large historic earthquakes.

Abstract:A model of stress transfer implies that earthquakes in 1933 and 1952 increased the Coulomb stress toward failure at the site of the 1971 San Fernando earthquake. The 1971 earthquake in turn raised stress and produced aftershocks at the site of the 1987 Whittier Narrows and 1994 Northridge ruptures. The Northridge main shock raised stress in areas where its aftershocks and surface faulting occurred. Together, the earthquakes with moment magnitude M ≥ 6 near Los Angeles since 1933 have stressed parts of the Oak Ridge, Sierra Madre, Santa Monica Mountains, Elysian Park, and Newport-Inglewood faults by more than 1 bar. Although too small to cause earthquakes, these stress changes can trigger events if the crust is already near failure or advance future earthquake occurrence if it is not.
