Abstract:Earthquake-triggered landslides are some of the most destructive natural disasters. Although remote detection of landslides is economic and efficient, it may miss the more subtle signs of hidden landslides. The Kizawa Tunnel and facilities in its vicinity were severely damaged in the 2004 mid-Niigata Prefecture earthquake. After investigation of the most prominent cracks, the damage was attributed to the slip along a hidden weakness plane. Evidence supporting this argument is summarized in this paper. However, the extent of the shear plane is not limited to the interior of the northern part of the tunnel. The dislocation observed in the two wells to the south of the Kizawa Tunnel together with other findings from previous studies indicates that Kizawa hamlet lies on the southern extension of the same shear plane. Taking account of the presence of flat sedimentary structures, the shear plane may extend in all directions. The authors also surveyed other signs of damage along the perimeter where the shear plane intersects the ground surface. The geological and geomorphological features of the hidden landslide are discussed. Reactivation of interlayer sliding is a threat to the local residents, and thus more attention should be paid to monitoring the movement of the slope to avoid devastating damages.
Limit on Slip Rate and Timing of Recent Seismic Ground-Ruptures on the Jinghong Fault, SE of the Eastern Himalayan Syntaxis

Abstract:Quantifying slip rates and earthquake occurrence of active faults on the Shan Plateau, southeast of the eastern Himalayan syntaxis, is critical to assessing the seismic hazard and understanding the kinematics and geodynamics of this region. Most previous estimates of slip rates are averaged over either many millions of years using offset geological markers or decades using GPS. Well-constrained millennial slip rates of these faults remain sparse and constraints on recurrence rates of damaging earthquakes exist only for a few faults. Here we investigate the millennial slip rate and timing of recent earthquakes on the Jinghong fault, one of the geomorphically most significant sinistral-slip faults on the central Shan Plateau. We map and reconstruct fault offset (18 +/- 5m) of alluvial fan features at Manpa on the central Jinghong fault, using a 0.1 m-resolution digital surface model obtained from an unmanned aerial vehicle survey. We establish a slip rate, <= 2.5 +/- 0.7 mm/yr over the past similar to 7000 years, using pit-exposed stratigraphy. This millennial slip rate is consistent with rates averaged over both decadal and million-year timescales. Excavations at three sites near the town of Gelanghe on the northeastern Jinghong fault demonstrate 1) that the last seismic ground-rupture occurred between 482 and 889 cal yr BP, most likely in the narrower window 824-767 cal yr BP, if the lack of large earthquakes in the historical earthquake record is reliable, and 2) that multiple fault ruptures have occurred since similar to 3618 cal yr BP. Combining this finding with a lack of large earthquakes in the similar to 800-year-long Chinese historic record in this region, we suggest an average recurrence interval of seismic ground-ruptures on the order of similar to 1000 years. This recurrence interval is consistent with the slip rate of the Jinghong fault and the size and earthquake frequency on other sinistral faults on the Shan Plateau.
Slip Maxima at Fault Junctions and Rupturing of Barriers During the 2008 Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:The disastrous 12 May 2008 Wenchuan earthquake in China took the local population as well as scientists by surprise. Although the Longmen Shan fault zone—which includes the fault segments along which this earthquake nucleated—was well known, geologic and geodetic data indicate relatively low (<3 mm yr −1 ) deformation rates. Here we invert Global Positioning System and Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar data to infer fault geometry and slip distribution associated with the earthquake. Our analysis shows that the geometry of the fault changes along its length: in the southwest, the fault plane dips moderately to the northwest but becomes nearly vertical in the northeast. Associated with this is a change in the motion along the fault from predominantly thrusting to strike-slip. Peak slip along the fault occurs at the intersections of fault segments located near the towns of Yingxiu, Beichuan and Nanba, where fatalities and damage were concentrated. We suggest that these locations represent barriers that failed in a single event, enabling the rupture to cascade through several fault segments and cause a major moment magnitude ( M w ) 7.9 earthquake. Using coseismic slip distribution and geodetic and geological slip rates, we estimate that the failure of barriers and rupture along multiple segments takes place approximately once in 4,000 years.
Characteristics of Late‐Quaternary Activity and Seismic Risk of the Northeastern Section of the Longmenshan Fault Zone

Abstract:Following the 2008 Wenchuan M8 earthquake, the seismic risk of the northeastern section of the Longmenshan fault zone and the adjacent Hanzhong basin has become an issue that receives much concern. It is facing, however, the problem of a lack of sufficient data because of little previous work in these regions. The northeastern section of the Longmenshan fault zone includes three major faults: the Qingchuan fault, Chaba‐Lin'ansi fault, and Liangshan south margin fault, with the Hanzhong basin at the northern end. This paper presents investigations of the geometry, motion nature, and activity ages of these three faults, and reveals that they are strike slip with normal faulting, with latest activity in the Late Pleistocene. It implies that this section of the Longmenshan fault zone has been in an extensional setting, probably associated with the influence of the Hanzhong basin. Through analysis of the tectonic relationship between the Longmenshan fault zone and the Hanzhong basin, this work verifies that the Qingchuan fault played an important role in the evolution of the Hanzhong basin, and further studies the evolution model of this basin. Finally, with consideration of the tectonic setting of the Longmenshan fault zone and the Hanzhong basin as well as seismicity of surrounding areas, this work suggests that this region has no tectonic conditions for great earthquakes and only potential strong events in the future.

Abstract:The 2008 Wenchuan earthquake occurred on imbricate, oblique, steeply dipping, slowly slipping, listric-reverse faults. Measurements of coseismic slip, the distribution of aftershocks, and fault-plane solution of the mainshock all confirm this style of deformation and indicate cascading earthquake rupture of multiple segments, each with coseismic slip occurring in the shallow crust above a depth range of 10 to 12 km. Interactions among three geological units—eastern Tibet, the Longmen Shan, and the Sichuan basin—caused slow strain accumulation in the Longmen Shan so that measurable preearthquake slip was minor. Coseismic deformation, however, took place mostly within the interseismically locked Longmen Shan fault zone. The earthquake may have initiated from slip on a fault plane dipping 30–40° northwest in a depth range from 15 to 20 km and triggered oblique slip on the high-angle faults at depths shallower than 15 km to form the great Wenchuan earthquake.

Abstract:The mechanical state (i.e., creeping or locked) of fault zone systems implies future seismic hazards. The Anninghe-Daliangshan fault zone in southeastern Tibet serves as the central curved segment of the most seismically active fault system in mainland China, which has produced a remarkable sequence of historical large earthquakes. To better understand its deformation modes and seismic-aseismic slip partitioning, we built a high-resolution earthquake catalog along the Anninghe fault (ANHF) zone and the Daliangshan fault (DLSF) zone utilizing a dense seismic array deployed between 2017 and 2022. The machine-learning based workflow produces ∼16,000 events with various behaviors and patterns located within the two fault zones. We then systematically evaluated and compared the spatiotemporal seismic patterns, seismic slip rate, statistical properties ( b -value, C V value, and nearest neighbor distance distribution), as well as geodetic measurements. Our results infer that the lower seismogenic crust (16–30 km; brittle) of the northern DLSF zone is creeping and releasing elastic strain with abundant microearthquakes; and the northern ANHF behaves similarly. Moving toward the south, the ANHF transits to a locked state, characterized by sparse seismicity, significantly low seismic energy release and a low b -value. Separated around Mianning, the locked segment is prone to generate two ∼M7.3 earthquakes, posing significant seismic hazard to approximately one million residents nearby. Overall, our updated analysis on the creeping northern DLSF and locked southern ANHF could deepen the understanding of seismic behavior along in-land fault system and guide future seismic hazard assessment in densely populated Southwest China.

Fault‐Valve Instability: A Mechanism for Slow Slip Events

Abstract:Abstract Geophysical and geological studies provide evidence for cyclic changes in fault‐zone pore fluid pressure that synchronize with or at least modulate slip events. A hypothesized explanation is fault valving arising from temporal changes in fault zone permeability. In our study, we investigate how the coupled dynamics of rate and state friction, along‐fault fluid flow, and permeability evolution can produce slow slip events. Permeability decreases with time, and increases with slip. Linear stability analysis shows that steady slip with constant fluid flow along the fault zone is unstable to perturbations, even for velocity‐strengthening friction with no state evolution, if the background flow is sufficiently high. We refer to this instability as the “fault valve instability.” The propagation speed of the fluid pressure and slip pulse, which scales with permeability enhancement, can be much higher than expected from linear pressure diffusion. Two‐dimensional simulations with spatially uniform properties show that the fault valve instability develops into slow slip events, in the form of aseismic slip pulses that propagate in the direction of fluid flow. We also perform earthquake sequence simulations on a megathrust fault, taking into account depth‐dependent frictional and hydrological properties. The simulations produce quasi‐periodic slow slip events from the fault valve instability below the seismogenic zone, in both velocity‐weakening and velocity‐strengthening regions, for a wide range of effective normal stresses. A separation of slow slip events from the seismogenic zone, which is observed in some subduction zones, is reproduced when assuming a fluid sink around the mantle wedge corner.

Active fault-related folding beneath an alluvial terrace in the Southern Longmen Shan range front, Sichuan basin, China: Implications for seismic hazard

Abstract:The devastating 2008 M-w 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake, China, demonstrates that the central and northern parts of the Longmen Shan are currently active. Evidence for active faulting and folding in the southern Longmen Shan, however, remains poorly documented. In this paper, we define the structural geometry, fault kinematics, and seismic hazard of the Qiongxi thrust fault system (QTF) along the southern Longmen Shan range front by integrating deep and shallow seismic-reflection data and geomorphic observations. The QTF is a 50 km long, north-south-trending set of faults and associated folds that exhibit geomorphic evidence of Quaternary surface deformation. Geomorphic observations and seismic-reflection data reveal that these faults dip steeply to the east and merge at depth with a blind, west-dipping thrust ramp. The trend and reverse sense of slip along the QTF indicates that the structure accommodates east-west crustal shortening. Based on uplift of stratigraphic horizons across the fault zone, we define a Late Pliocene-to-Early Pleistocene fault slip rate of 0.2-0.3 mm/yr and a Middle Pleistocene-to-present rate of 0.4-1.2 mm/yr on the west-dipping thrust ramp. This ramp soles to a basal detachment in the Triassic section at a depth of 4.5-5.5 km. To the west, this detachment steps down onto a blind, northwest-dipping thrust termed the Range Front thrust. A rupture of the QTF in combination with the Range Front thrust could generate an M-w 7.8 earthquake with average displacement of 5.7 m. This type of earthquake source poses significant hazards to the adjacent, highly populated Sichuan basin.
Crustal dynamics prediction and characterization for the Yishu fault zone based on slip susceptibility analysis

Abstract:We estimate the slip susceptibility of faults in the Yishu fault zone using a slip tendency analysis based on coupled tectonic stress profiles. Studying in situ stress data and focal mechanism solution data collected in this area over more than 30 years, we construct the stress profiles of the study area using the coupling analysis method for deep and shallow stress data. Subsequently, the susceptibility of faults to slip is comprehensively evaluated based on various stress indicators and other related factors. Our results show that the frictional characteristic index μ m is low in the deep and shallow crust of the Yishu fault zone, indicating a low degree of overall stress accumulation. A comprehensive evaluation of the susceptibility of faults to slip based on five typical factors ( μ m , horizontal-to-vertical stress ratio K , angle between the P axis and fault plane θ , S-wave velocity, and seismic density) indicates that the overall seismic risk in the central part of the Yishu fault zone is low, while the northwestern Yishu fault zone exhibits high seismic risk. Furthermore, the southeastern part of the Yishu fault zone reflects the transition from medium- to low-seismic risk. These results provide geomechanical and fault mechanics evidence for evaluating the regional crustal dynamics of the Yishu fault zone.

Spatial Distribution of Large-Scale Landslides Induced by the 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake

Abstract:The 5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake in 2008 induced hundreds of large-scale landslides. This paper systematically analyzes 112 large-scale landslides (surface area > 50000 m2), which were identified by interpretation of remote sensing imagery and field investigations. The analysis suggests that the distribution of large-scale landslides is affected by the following four factors: (a) distance effect: 80% of studied large-scale landslides are located within a distance of 5 km from the seismic faults. The farther the distance to the faults, the lower the number of large-scale landslides; (b) locked segment effect: the large-scale landslides are mainly located in five concentration zones closely related with the crossing, staggering and transfer sections between one seismic fault section and the next one, as well as the end of the NE fault section. The zone with the highest concentration was the Hongbai-Chaping segment, where a great number of large-scale landslides including the two largest landslides were located. The second highest concentration of large-scale landslides was observed in the Nanba-Donghekou segment at the end of NE fault, where the Donghekou landslide and the Woqian landslide occurred; (c) Hanging wall effect: about 70% of the large-scale landslides occurred on the hanging wall of the seismic faults; and (d) direction effect: in valleys perpendicular to the seismic faults, the density of large-scale landslides on the slopes facing the seismic wave is obviously higher than that on the slopes dipping in the same direction as the direction of propagation of the seismic wave. Meanwhile, it is found that the sliding and moving directions of large-scale landslides are related to the staggering direction of the faults in each section. In Qingchuan County where the main fault activity was horizontal twisting and staggering, a considerable number of landslides showed the feature of sliding and moving in NE direction which coincides with the staggering direction of the seismic faults.
Deep slip rates along the Longmen Shan fault zone estimated from repeating microearthquakes

Abstract:We investigated deep slip rates along the Longmen Shan fault zone where the devastating 2008 M7.9 Wenchuan earthquake occurred using repeating earthquake data recorded by two digital seismic networks near the fault. Using cross‐correlation analysis of waveform data, we identified a total of 231 doublets and 224 multiplets that have highly similar waveforms. Most of these sequences are aperiodic with recurrence intervals varying from a few minutes to hundreds of days. For each multiplet, we first constructed a reference seismogram at each station and used it to measure the delay time of the P and S waves of each event within the cluster. We used the delay times to determine the relative distances between each event and the cluster centroid. The relative distances were used in screening repeating events in each multiplet. We identified a total of 12 repeating earthquake clusters in the source region of the M7.9 Wenchuan earthquake. Most of the clusters are located at the edge of locked areas where large coseismic slips were observed during the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake, suggesting a close spatial relationship between microearthquakes and impending large devastating earthquakes. The measured in situ deep slip rates appeared to increase with depth and varied from 3.5 to 9.6 mm/yr at depth range of 4–18 km. They are approximately twice as large as those inferred from surface GPS and geological data. Our results here have significant implications to the understanding of faulting as well as risk assessment of seismic hazards. Pre‐Existing Off‐Fault Damage Can Impede Coseismic On‐Fault Slip

Abstract:Primarily due to the scarce direct field evidence along a same fault, understanding the relationship between the pre‐existing off‐fault damage and coseismic slip distribution remains challenging. This study offers the first field‐based quantitative assessments of fault damage zones along the surface rupture generated by the 2008 Mw 7.9 Wenchuan earthquake in China over eight profiles with 254 outcrops. The width and mean tectonic fracture intensity of the damage zones exhibit pronounced variations along the fault strike. We introduce the damage index as a proxy to quantify the extent of pre‐existing damage. We find a statistically significant anti‐correlation between the damage index and coseismic on‐fault slip. We thus infer that pre‐existing off‐fault damage plays a significant role in dissipating rupture energy, thereby reducing coseismic on‐fault slip. This study provides a natural case for linking the long‐term fault zone evolution and the short‐term earthquake rupture dynamics.

Spatial slip rate distribution along the SE Xianshuihe fault, eastern Tibet, and earthquake hazard assessment

Abstract:The Xianshuihe (XSH) fault in eastern Tibet is one of the most active faults in China, with the next large earthquake most likely to occur along its SE part, where the fault splits into three parallel branches: Yalahe, Selaha and Zheduotang. Precisely quantifying their slip rates at various timescales is essential to evaluate regional earthquake hazard. Here, we expand our previous work on the Selaha fault to the nearby Zheduotang and Moxi faults, and add observations on the Yalahe fault and on the newly discovered Mugecuo South fault zone. Using tectonic-geomorphology approaches with 10 Be dating, we had previously determined average late Quaternary slip rates of 9.75±0.15 and 4.4±0.5 mm/yr along the NW and SE Selaha fault, respectively. Using the same methods here, we determine a slip rate of 3.4-4.8 mm/yr on the Zheduotang fault and of 9.6-13.4 mm/yr on the Moxi fault. This is consistent with the southeastward slip rate increase we had proposed along the XSH fault system from 6-8 mm/yr (Ganzi fault) to ∼10 mm/yr (Selaha fault), and >9.6 mm/yr (Moxi fault). We propose a new model for the SE Xianshuihe fault, where the large-scale Mugecuo pull-apart basin lies within an even larger scale compressive uplift zone in a restraining bend of the XSH fault, where the highest peak in eastern Tibet is located (Gongga Shan, 7556 m). Our slip rate determination helps to constrain a relatively high regional M w ∼7 earthquake hazard at present on the SE Xianshuihe fault.

Abstract:Active faults release elastic strain energy via a whole continuum of modes of slip, ranging from devastating earthquakes to Slow Slip Events and persistent creep. Understanding the mechanisms controlling the occurrence of rapid, dynamic slip radiating seismic waves (i.e. earthquakes) or slow, silent slip (i.e. SSEs) is a fundamental point in the estimation of seismic hazard along subduction zones. On top of showing slower rupture propagation velocity than earthquakes, SSEs exhibit different scaling relationships, which could reflect either different physical mechanisms or an intriguing lack of observations. Like earthquakes, SSEs are bound to occur along unstable portions of active faults, raising the question of the physical control of the mode of slip (seismic or aseismic) along these sections. Here, we use the numerical implementation of a simple rate-weakening fault model to explain the spontaneous occurrence, the characteristics and the scaling relationship of SSEs and earthquakes. We show that the simplest of fault geometrical complexities with uniform friction properties can reproduce slow and fast earthquakes without appealing to complex rheologies or mechanisms. Our model helps resolve many of the existing paradoxes between observations and physical models of earthquakes and SSEs.

Abstract:Quantitative analysis of the slip rate of active faults and their seismic parameters is important for seismic hazard analysis. In this study, we first construct an elastic block model to obtain the slip rate of boundary faults based on the distribution characteristics of active faults, seismicity, and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) observations in Sichuan–Yunnan, China. Then, the long-term seismic risks of the boundary faults are quantitatively evaluated based on the principle of seismic moment balance. The Sichuan–Yunnan region can be divided into 17 relatively independent and stable subblocks. There is clear zoning in the distribution and mechanisms of boundary fault movement and deformation. The boundary faults exhibit an alternating dextral–sinistral–dextral–sinistral strike-slip pattern from northeast to southwest. Among these boundary faults, the Xianshuihe–Xiaojiang fault zone has a high sinistral strike-slip rate, and the Jinshajiang fault plays an important role in accommodating the movement and deformation of the subblocks in the Chuandian block. The dextral strike-slip rate is approximately 10 mm/yr, which is diffusely transferred to the secondary boundary faults in the Chuandian block. Comparison of the rates of moment accumulation and release reveals that the southern segment of the Xiaojiang fault, the Longriba fault, the Daliangshan fault, and the Yuanmou fault exhibit significant moment deficits, with corresponding moment magnitudes exceeding M w 7.5. More attention should be given to the strong earthquake risks of these faults. The Xianshuihe–Xiaojiang, Jiali–Lancangjiang, and Red River faults, which are arc shaped, dominate the regional deformation and determine the motion and deformation model of the subblocks and secondary boundary faults within the Chuandian block and the area southwest of the Red River fault.

Abstract:Some recent publications presented a result suggesting that Zipingpu reservoir hastened the occurrence of the 2008 MS8.0 Wenchuan earthquake by tens to hundreds of years. Their researches calculated the Coulomb stress change induced by Zipingpu reservoir on the rupturing fault of Wenchuan earthquake. Their results, however, are critically dependent upon the 3-D event location, reservoir location, and the fault plane orientation. We repeated Ge et al.’s work in this paper and found that an improper dip angle parameter of their 2-D fault model might lead to a wrong conclusion. Both the modeling results based on the 2-D model and 3-D model with proper fault parameters will show Coulomb stress changes alone were neither large enough nor had the correct orientation to affect the occurrence of Wenchuan earthquake, which supports our recent argument based on the local seismicity analysis and the induced Coulomb stress change calculation with a 3-D model.
Viscoelastic simulation of deep tectonic deformation of the Longmenshan fault zone and its implication for strong earthquakes

Abstract:The 2008 M(w)7. 9 Wenchuari earthquake ruptured the middle and northern segments of the Longmenshan faults zone (LMSFZ) at the eastern margin of the Tibetan Plateau. Prior to this earthquake, the LMSFZ had been seismically quiet for several centuries, where no hints suggest such a M similar to 8. 0 earthquake might strike the area. The long-term geological investigations and short-term geodetic measurements before the Wenchuan earthquake generally agree that the horizontal slip rate along the LMSFZ is very limited. The low deformation rate observed at the surface around the LMSFZ may not reflect the true deep deformation where the devastating Wenchuan earthquake nucleated. The slip rates at depth derived from seismological investigation of repeating microearthquakes were found to be systematically larger than those observed on the surface. In order to validate the depth-related slip rate pattern, based on regional tectonic characteristics of the LMSFZ, a two-dimensional viscoelastic finite-element model with contact algorithm is established to simulate the evolution process of the crust and upper mantle during an earthquake cycle. The viscoelastic creep and discontinuity contact relationships in the crust and upper mantle are taking into account. Our primary results confirm the depth-related lateral slip rate pattern around the LMSFZ revealed by the seismological observations of repeating earthquakes. Furthermore, the LMSFZ and its surrounding regions are prone to accumulation of strain and strain rate potential with the highest stress concentration area of 5 similar to 19 km depth, suggesting that this area may essentially nucleate strong earthquakes over time, depending on the bilateral rheology structure of the lower crust and upper mantle. At the same time, the large strain rate accommodated at depth can explain the occurrence of the unanticipated Wenchuan M(w)7. 9 earthquake in 2008. It is found that the slip deficit area in the northeastern Japan subduction zone estimated from repeating earthquakes is very consistent with the rupture zone of the 2011 M-w 9. 0 Tohoku-oki earthquake. We suggest that slip rates at seismogenic depths are of critical importance in seismic hazard analysis. The reoccurrence frequency of repeating earthquakes can be regarded as the "subsurface creepmeters" to measure the in-situ deep slip rate of tectonic deformation.
Earthquake Source and Hazard Analysis: the May 12, 2008, Ms 8.0 Wenchuan Earthquake, Sichuan, China

Abstract:The May 12, Ms 8.0 Wenchuan earthquake is tectonically due to the convergence of the India plate against the Eurasiaplate at a rate of～50 mm/yr, which resulted in the crustal movement toward the eastern Sichuan Basin and the southeastern China continent from the uplifted Tibetan Plateau. The epicentral area is located in the active Longrnenshan centralized seismic zone along which the aftershocks are concentrated within a～350 km long and～100 km wide active belt of horizontal projection.Hypocentral depths range generally from～10 to～20 km within the crustal seismogenic zone above the brittle-ductile transition boundary, characterized typically by shallow tectonic earthquakes. Focal mechanism of the Wenchuan earthquake bears a close correlation with the Longmenshan tectonic movement indicated by the particular deep structural anomalies of the rapid crustal transition deepened westward, gravity gradient, high Vp/Vs, ratio of average 2.2, aod geological features of thrust faulting style with strike slip history. Response spectra for rock and soil sites are, respectively, estimated and compared for different tectonic regimes, based on the study of source, path and site effects, emphasizing soil site amplication effect. Also studied are safetyconcerned issues for prevention of future damaging earthquakes including geological hazards, seismic design, earthquake earlywarning systems (EEWS), and strategies of long term to short term earthquake forecasting. A sample of design spectra is presentedon weighted average rock-site attenuation models. Topic on seismotectonics and earthquake dynamics in the areas of high seismic risk could be well incorporated with engineering geology and environmental engineering. Study on performances of the newly designed and constructed engineering structures should provide most valuable input to improving seismic design codes in China and throughout the world. It is a challenging task to predict earthquakes; however, effort should never be given up. Earthquake disaster reduction and prevention is a realistic measure for safeguard of future damaging earthquakes.
On the Evolution of Seismogenic Faults in the Longmen Shan, Eastern Tibet

Abstract:A fundamental debate exists regarding the geometry and depth extent of seismogenic faults in eastern Tibet. Along the Longmen Shan, geologic and seismic reflection data reveal a belt of low to moderate angle thrust faults, some of which may have been activated in devastating earthquakes in 2008 (Mw ∼7.9, Wenchuan) and 2013 (Mw ∼6.6, Lushan). However, geologic and geodetic constraints on these ruptures suggest rupture along relatively high-angle listric reverse faults. Here, we use a combination of focal mechanisms determined from 276 aftershocks (Ms>4.0) with well-determined waveforms and aftershock distributions from the 2008 event to determine subsurface fault geometry. Our results imply that seismogenic slip occurred along relatively high-angle structures that cross-cut low-angle imbricate faults imaged in reflection seismic data. Thus, we suggest that current geometric models of seismogenic faults may not fully represent the distribution of subsurface seismic hazard along the heavily-populated Sichuan Basin.
Numeric modeling of the strain accumulation and release of the 2008 Wenchuan, Sichuan, China, earthquake

Abstract:As one of the most devastating earthquakes, the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake occurred on imbricate, high-angle listric-reverse faults. The faults dip similar to 70 degrees above 15 km depth, become 30 degrees to 40 degrees below similar to 15 km depth, and presumably root into a subhorizontal brittle-ductile transition zone below about 22 +/- 2 km depth. In this paper we use the viscoelastic finite-element method to simulate coseismic deformation and stress change, and recurrence of major earthquakes associated with the high-angle listric-reverse fault. Our modeling shows that changes of coseismic equivalent stress mainly occur in the vicinity of the seismogenic fault, especially the hanging wall of the fault in the depth range above 12 km. Modeled coseismic slip distribution and modeled average recurrent interval corroborate with geological, geodetic, and seismological observations. We modeled 250,000 yr slip history of the fault slip. The result shows that minor slips, which obey slip-predictable model, take place on 30 degrees-40 degrees dipping fault plane at depth below 15 km. When the isotropic stress accumulation on the gentle fault reaches the critical level, the entire gently dipping fault ruptures to form a large slip. The large slips on the gently dipping fault comply with a time-predictable model of recurrences. These larger slips on the gently dipping fault occur simultaneously with slips on the steeply dipping fault and might have triggered slips on the steeply dipping fault to form great events such as the 2008 Wenchuan earthquake.
