Abstract:Green production is implemented to save energy, reduce energy consumption, and decrease pollution levels. Green production is associated with preventing pollution and can be used to further extend manufacturer responsibility to products and the environment, thereby achieving the goals of ecological benefits and sustainable development. Green production is a crucial part of corporate social responsibility; thus, enterprises pursuing sustainable development should determine how green production and social responsibility can be integrated with their core operation strategies. This study developed green production–based assessment indicators to establish a green production assessment framework. In addition, the decision-making trail and evaluation laboratory and analytical network process were used to create a decision-making trail and evaluation laboratory–based analytical network process model. We employed the decision-making trail and evaluation laboratory–based analytical network process to calculate the level of influence and causality between the indicators and subsequently determine the weight of the indicators. Finally, the indicators were used to establish a comprehensive assessment system for green production. The green production criteria system established in this study is both a theoretical contribution and has wide practical applications.

Abstract:Adopting environmentally sound practices and utilizing resilient issues to face disruptive events and risks are new important agendas for enterprises, governments, and societies. The issue of supplier selection and evaluation in accordance with green and resilient principles has received little attention in the electronic industry. So, the present study aims to consider both criteria of resilience and greenness in a new supplier selection model. This study presents an integrated decision-making method based on the fuzzy set theory and data envelopment analysis (DEA) approach for supplier selection in a supply chain network in an electronic manufacturing company. The fuzzy set theory was used for analyzing suppliers' indicator weights, the suppliers' performance, and rating them with respect to subcriteria. Then, the obtained data were aggregated to classify and prepare them for use in a version assurance region of the DEA method with one dummy input and three output variables to rank the suppliers. The performance of the proposed DEA-based model has been verified through the sensitivity analysis and it has been validated by the existing FIS-based model in the literature. Furthermore, the proposed DEA-based model can be designed with any number of suppliers and criteria and subcriteria.

Abstract:In the past decade, there has been a growing concern about the environmental protection in public society as governments almost all over the world have initiated certain rules and regulations to promote energy saving and minimize the production of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in many manufacturing industries. The development of sustainable manufacturing systems is considered as one of the effective solutions to minimize the environmental impact. Lean approach is also considered as a proper method for achieving sustainability as it can reduce manufacturing wastes and increase the system efficiency and productivity. However, the lean approach does not include environmental waste of such as energy consumption and CO2 emissions when designing a lean manufacturing system. This paper addresses these issues by evaluating a sustainable manufacturing system design considering a measurement of energy consumption and CO2 emissions using different sources of energy (oil as direct energy source to generate thermal energy and oil or solar as indirect energy source to generate electricity). To this aim, a multi-objective mathematical model is developed incorporating the economic and ecological constraints aimed for minimization of the total cost, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions for a manufacturing system design. For the real world scenario, the uncertainty in a number of input parameters was handled through the development of a fuzzy multi-objective model. The study also addresses decision-making in the number of machines, the number of air-conditioning units, and the number of bulbs involved in each process of a manufacturing system in conjunction with a quantity of material flow for processed products. A real case study was used for examining the validation and applicability of the developed sustainable manufacturing system model using the fuzzy multi-objective approach.

Abstract:As one of the lean manufacturing tools Just in Time (JIT) is based on the "zero stock and defect" principle. While JIT has a positive impact on the general productivity of companies, there are findings of the detrimental effects of JIT on the environment. As an emerging research area, "green ergonomics" suggests that the effects of every human activity on the environment must be considered to protect nature and human beings. Thus, the results of JIT activities conflict with the aims of green ergonomics. This paper investigates ways to overcome this conflict. To that end, the measures to be taken to make JIT compatible with the green ergonomics concept were determined and analyzed. While determining the measures, a relationship is established between the measures and the principles of green ergonomics. In the analysis stage, the interval valued type-2 fuzzy extension of Analytical Hierarchy Process with group decision-making technique was employed. This paper contributes to literature in two ways. In practical terms, it provides guidance for the companies that want to conduct JIT activities without harming the environment. In theoretical terms, it handles and analyzes green ergonomics principles and JIT concept in an integrated manner.

Abstract:Along with the increased competition in production and service areas, many organizations attempt to provide their products at a lower price and higher quality. On the other hand, consideration of environmental criteria in the conventional supplier selection methodologies is required for companies trying to promote green supply chain management (GSCM). In this regard, a multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) technique based on analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and fuzzy technique for order of preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS) is used to evaluate and rate the suppliers. Then, considering the resource constraint, weight of criteria and a rank of suppliers are taken into account in a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming (MOMILP) to determine the optimum order quantity of each supplier under uncertain conditions. To deal with the uncertain multi-objectiveness of the proposed model, a robust goal programming (RGP) approach based on Shannon entropy is applied. The offered methodology is applied to a real case study from a green service food manufacturing company in Iran in order to verify its applicability with a sensitivity analysis performed on different uncertainty levels. Furthermore, the threshold of robustness worthiness (TRW) is studied by applying different budgets of uncertainty for the green service food manufacturing company. Finally, a discussion and conclusion on the applicability of the methodology is provided, and an outlook to future research projects is given.

Abstract:The implementation of lean manufacturing to increase productivity often neglects the impact on the environment and the well-being of employees. This can result in negative consequences such as environmental harm and poor employee satisfaction. To address this issue, an integrated ergo-green-lean conceptual model was developed in the literature. However, no case study has been conducted to support this model. Therefore, this research aims to investigate the practical outcomes of implementing the integrated framework in an automobile parts industry. Key performance indicators (KPIs) were identified, including ergonomic risk score, job satisfaction, carbon footprint emission both from direct energy consumption and material wastage, cycle time, lead time, die setup time, and rejection rate. Various assessment techniques were employed, such as the rapid entire body assessment (REBA) with the Standard Nordic Questionnaire (SNQ), job stress survey, carbon footprint analysis (CFA), and value stream mapping (VSM) to evaluate the KPIs at the pre- and post-intervention phases. The results demonstrate significant improvements in job satisfaction (49%), improved REBA score of 10 postures with very high risk numbers by 100%, a 30.3% and 19.2% decrease in carbon emissions from energy consumption and material wastage, respectively, a 45% decrease in rejection rate at the customer end, a 32.5% decrease in in-house rejection rate, a 15.5% decrease in cycle time, a 34.9% decrease in lead time, and a 21% decrease in die setup time. A Python regression model utilizing sklearn, pandas, and numpy was created to assess the relationship between process improvement and the chosen KPIs.

Abstract:Due to its competitive advantages and mitigation of global climate change, sustainability development has become a center of attention in the manufacturing society to improve production processes. Scant research exists on the three pillars of sustainability ― economy, environment, and society ― in production frameworks through the lens of process improvement tools such as lean and six-sigma. Based on lean six-sigma, this paper develops a sustainable lean production framework (SLPF) for manufacturing companies supported by the theory of practice-based view. Since a high portion of production frameworks failed to reach the sustainability goals in the implementation, we use practitioners' and scholars' perspectives to build a framework including five stages and fifteen steps. To validate the framework, we empirically apply practitioners' opinions using the Delphi method. Moreover, we experimentally verify the framework by implementing it in a cookware manufacturing company. The result showed that the proposed framework can significantly improve sustainability pillars, e.g., after an investment of $10,212, our case implementation was improved in the economy by $120,142 saving per year, the environment by reducing 257.14 tonnes CO2 per year and the society by minimizing 48 safety incidents per year, and 24 worker-absence per year.

Abstract:In recent years, many firms have become aware that environmental issues are critical barriers to the sustainability of a business. To overcome these barriers, several studies have been conducted to develop quantitative measurements associated with industry practices to prevent pollution and waste. As a result of the joint effort among industry players, green supply chain practices (GSCP) received positive feedback regarding their ecological and economic performance from two eco-industrialists. Hence, GSCP has become an instrument to provide a practical approach and reduce environmental impact while also affording economic benefits to industry. Firms are aggressively integrating green practice within their supply chains for balancing triple-bottom-line performance. Thus, the current study combined fuzzy set theory and the Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (DEMATEL) method for a hybrid approach to investigate the effects of each criterion within GSCP. Moreover, the hybrid approach offered a visual analysis for the Vietnamese automobile manufacturing industry to explore the indicators in GSCP implementation. The study results include the significant finding that recovering and recycling used products is a major criterion affecting economic performance. In other words, firms can improve economic performance in GSCP through establishing a recovering and recycling system. This study contributes a visual diagram to determine the main indicator for GSCP implementation in the Vietnamese automobile manufacturing industry.

Abstract:Green Manufacturing (GM in short) provides a systems view of the manufacturing process that aims to efficiently use energy, water and raw materials in order to minimize air and water pollution and generation of waste. Green manufacturing is beneficial to the alleviation of environment burdens. To reap more profits, GM has been introduced to many fields to improve the performance. The optimization selection methods of technical factors which include mainly the selection of cutters and cutting fluid, optimization of cutting fluid system, is an important approach to improving environmental performance of cutting machining. The objective factors of decision-making problems for traditional technical factors' selection are time, quality and cost. Based on the main idea of environmental consciousness, a decision-making framework model of GM is proposed; a multi-objective decisionmaking model for technical factors selection is put forward. The objectives include Time (T), Quality (Q), Cost(C), Resources(R) and Environment impact (E), where T aims to minimize the produce time, Q means to maximize the quality, C means to minimize the cost, R means to minimize the resource consumption and E means to minimize the environment impact respectively. Each objective is analyzed in detail and application of the Fuzzy Analysis Algorithm in the decision-making is discussed. A case study in which a practical decision-making problem of technical factors selection for GM is analyzed and successful application of above model shows that the model is practical.

Abstract:The supplier selection problem (SSP) is known as one of the major issues in the supply chain management area. In this field, the literature shows that the combination of green and agile indicators has been ignored by researchers. Hence, this research attempts to study the SSP considering green and agile aspects, simultaneously. To do this, an efficient hybrid fuzzy decision-making approach is developed based on the Fuzzy Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory (FDEMATEL), Fuzzy Best-Worst Method (FBWM), Fuzzy Analytic Network Process (FANP), and Fuzzy Vlse Kriterijumsk Optimizacija Kompromisno Resenje (FVIKOR) methods. Then, to show the efficiency and application of the proposed approach, a case study in the medical devices industry is investigated. After determining the main indicators and alternatives, the interrelationships between indicators are identified employing FDEMATEL. Then, the weights of indicators are calculated using integrated FBWM-FANP. Finally, the potential suppliers are ranked applying FVIKOR. Based on the obtained results, price and greenness are the more important aspects and also material costs, environmental performance evaluation, manufacture flexibility, service level, and system reliability are the most important criteria for the green-agile supplier selection problem in the medical devices industry. Since all of the consistency ratios are less than 0.1, the reliability of the results is proved. On the other side, the results of conducting sensitivity analysis show that by changing the defuzzification methods, there is no significant change in the obtained results that demonstrates the validity of the proposed approach. Eventually, based on the obtained results, suppliers #1 and #5 are the best suppliers for the considered company.

Abstract:For the manufacturing industry under the Industry 4.0 Environment, low carbon emissions and environmental protection have been a main point of the industry development due to more and more production accidents caused by environmental issues. However, there is a paucity of systematic evaluation systems considering greener production performance for evaluating and managing suppliers during production processes in the manufacturing industry. By incorporating indices related to greener production, this study constructed a novel framework with an evaluation index system that suits the operation status of suppliers and the enterprise' management mode. Based on the new and systematic index system, a three-phase model was proposed to evaluate and manage suppliers in a hierarchical and orderly manner. An analytic hierarchy process method and an entropy weight method were hybridised to determine the weights of evaluation indices. The grading and ranking of suppliers were conducted by adopting grey clustering and grey relational analysis. A case study with real-world data from a leading car manufacturing company was employed to demonstrate the effectiveness of the framework and model. Compared to the old evaluation system, 80% of suppliers in the new evaluation system have different evaluation results. The company's average performance in greener production is improved by 6.5%. The control performance of pollutants and effluents is elevated by 12.5%. Scenario analysis was also conducted to investigate how evaluation results change with weights for greener production. The company is suggested to keep long-term cooperation with the two suppliers identified as the requirement for greener production increases. The proposed framework and model have potential applicability in other industries.

Abstract:Lean manufacturing practices (LMPs) and corporate environmental sustainability are becoming inextricably linked. Throughout the lean and green debate, many organisations have recognised that LMPs have implications for their sustainable development and competitive positioning. Not only LMPs are complex on their own, but when perceived from an environmental sustainability perspective, the decision to implement an LMP can become even more intricate. Although general tools exist, the lack of effective decision-making tools to help in the implementation of LMPs with an environmental sustainability dimension is palpable. Thus, this study tackles the aforementioned decision problem by incorporating environmental and operational performance outcome expectations as these expectations are viewed in light of the ease of implementation of various LMPs. A novel multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) model for evaluation of LMPs is developed in this respect. The model integrates a three-parameter interval grey number with rough set theory and the TODIM method. The model is run using empirical data from six manufacturing organisations. The findings facilitate the identification of a ‘locus of investments’ for a better selection of LMPs. The robustness of the decision support model developed is assessed through sensitivity analysis.

Abstract:This study includes a methodology for implementing the combination of lean, green and social assessment of a manufacturing cell in a six-sigma (DMAIC) framework. The effectiveness of this proposed methodology will be examined by a case study. This study shows an outline of the steps that need to be taken to have a complete sustainability assessment by using lean, green and six sigma techniques and practices. By combining lean and green strategies, all aspects of waste will be considered. Even though by the stow strategies helps in eliminating waste and improving environmental impacts, there is no consideration in the variability in the process. Six Sigma approach helps in reducing the variability of the production process. Each manufacturing systems has their own inputs, processes and outputs and has their specific problems that have to be studied by case-by case bases. On the other hand, considering employee and workers opinion about the productivity and quality plays an important role in optimization. Hence, in this study all aspect of sustainability is considered. Applying this methodology will improve economic, environment and social aspects of manufacturing cells.

Abstract:Purpose Exploring the Lean and Green relationship goes back to the beginnings of Lean manufacturing. Most cases established that companies implementing Lean have Green results. However, there are Lean practices with a higher impact on Green, but others with less impact. Therefore, this paper presents research that explores the relationship between Lean and Green in manufacturing companies and aims to determine whether Lean practices have a higher association with Green aspects. Design/methodology/approach A survey was conducted amongst manufacturing firms to determine their Lean Index (LI). The internally related elements of the Lean construct determined each firm's LI, whilst Cronbach alpha determined internal LI consistency. The survey also identified firms developing six Green aspects: International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) 14001, ISO 50001, general Green aspects and the specific aspects of materials, energy and water. An individual sample t-test shows different LI levels of association for each Green aspect. Binomial logistic regression shows the LI element association for each Green aspect. Findings LI is higher at firms reporting the inclusion of Green aspects. More than half of LI components have a statistically relevant association with the six Green aspects. In general, Ishikawa diagrams had the highest association with Green aspects whilst the lowest was seen in workers as improvement initiators. By grouping the LI elements into their categories, the Lean practices related to controlling processes have a higher association, whilst the involvement of employees has the lowest. Research limitations/implications Further research found in this paper identifies the possibilities for investigating the specificities of each Lean tool to develop Green aspects in companies. Practical implications Practitioners learn that Lean and Green are not separate issues in business. This article provides evidence that Lean practices in place at companies are already associated with Green aspects, so integration may already be happening. Originality/value This paper provides specifics on the relationship between each Lean practice and developing Green aspects. Thus, this paper specifies the Lean practices that contribute most to Green efficiency to support the joint development of both themes.

Abstract:Smart production systems (SPS) are manufacturing systems capable of autonomously diagnosing their health and autonomously designing continuous improvement projects, leading to the desired productivity improvement. The main component of SPS, developed in this paper, is the Programmable Manufacturing Advisor (PMA), which evaluates the system's health and calculates optimal steps for continuous improvement. The analytics of PMA are based on the theory of Production Systems Engineering (PSE); the numerics of PMA are based on PSE Toolbox, which implements the PSE methods. In this paper, the PMA-based SPS architecture with manager-in-the-loop is described, theoretical/analytical foundations of PMA are outlined, its software/hardware implementations are commented upon, and demonstrations of PMA-based SPS operation are provided using two production systems: automotive underbody assembly (large volume manufacturing) and hot-dip galvanisation plant (small manufacturing organisation).

Abstract:The green supplier selection presents numerous challenges, from initial assessment to final selection, which specialists in this field of supplier management often encounter. Among the techniques that aim to meet these challenges that are continually progressing is the creation and development of high-quality decision-making tools. In this study, the assessment of suppliers hinges on both traditional and environmental factors. A framework of multi-criteria decision-making (MCDM) is announced in order to appraise green supplier selection. This framework integrates Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) combined with two additional methods: WASPAS ("Weighted Aggregated Sum-Product Assessment") and TOPSIS ("Technique for Order Preference by Similarity to Ideal Solution"). At the outset, there were five environmental criteria for green supplier selection: "Health and Safety", "Sustainable Product Design", "ISO 14001 Certification", "Investment Recovery", and "Green Packaging", along with three conventional criteria including quality, price, and delivery, were pinpointed through a review of literature and expert input to facilitate the MCDM approach. As part of demonstrating the pertinency of the recommended framework, a practical case study of the automotive industry in Morocco is discussed. The results demonstrate that the utilized Fuzzy hybrid methods yield consistent rankings for green suppliers. Additionally, among the four green suppliers, number three obtained the best ranking, which indicates the robustness and performance of the chosen models. Furthermore, this study offers a unified platform for selecting green suppliers under a Fuzzy environment. Therefore, the chosen strategy and its analysis provide relevant data and information to decision-makers for the choice and selection of suppliers. It can also provide and help procurement departments and decision-makers to choose and select the efficient ecological supplier in the global market supply chain.

Abstract:Business enterprises such as small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) play a significant role in economic development but struggle for sustainability. A business enterprise such as a manufacturing unit tries many technological innovations and strategic initiatives to accomplish sustainability in the manufacturing system. Lean manufacturing implementation is one such initiative that helps SMEs manufacture value-added products with increased profitability and waste minimization. However, lean implementation in SMEs is challenging. Hence, it is essential to follow a systematic framework and control the critical success factors (CSFs) in attempting lean implementation. The purpose of this research is to find, evaluate, and rank the CSFs of lean implementation of SMEs so that they may be controlled to accomplish successful lean implementation. The CSFs of lean implementation found by an in-depth assessment of the literature are modeled using the interpretative structural modeling (ISM) approach. MICMAC analysis is also used in classifying and understanding the significance of each lean implementation CSF. ISM and MICMAC provide the relationship modeling to reveal the inter-relationships of each lean implementation CSF. Subsequently, the ISM model is validated using the Delphi technique. The interpretative ranking process (IRP) has been applied to rank the CSFs of lean implementations. The results show that sustainability in a manufacturing system, financial capability, and employee involvement hold significant importance in lean implementations in manufacturing SMEs. Practicing managers may benefit from revisiting their lean implementation plans and respective aligned strategies. They will also be in a position to identify and focus on the scarce resources required for the subsequent lean implementations.

Abstract:As environmental awareness grows, society emphasizes green business. Thus, semiconductor companies encompass energy-saving processes and innovative product development. This study employs the fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (DEMATEL) analysis method to assess the impact of four key dimensions, externalities, market orientation, green technology, and corporate social responsibility, on semiconductor companies' green production decisions. This study uses the DEMATEL-based analytic network process (DANP) approach to rank the criteria order in green production decision-making. The results from the DEMATEL causality diagram highlight externalities as the most critical dimension influencing other dimensions of green production decisions. This study suggests that regulatory pollution punishment and subsidies emerge as the primary drivers for green production decisions. Companies adopt environmentally friendly production practices to prevent regulatory pollution penalties or reduce carbon trading costs. Additionally, the DANP results reveal that corporate image criteria in the corporate social responsibility dimension hold the utmost priority in semiconductor firms' green production decision-making. This implies that considerations for improving a company's image should take precedence as semiconductor companies seek shareholder support and governmental subsidies to ensure sustainable operations. Externalities arise as the secondary priority dimension in green production decision-making, aligning with the impact of externalities identified in DEMATEL findings.

Abstract:Based on a natural resource-based view, this study investigates how lean and green processes in manufacturer-customer (customer side) and manufacturer-supplier interfaces (supply side) in the supply chain influence sustainability in environmental, social, and economic performance. Data from 171 manufacturers are used to test the proposed relationships. The results show that green and lean processes play different roles in achieving sustainable performance. On the customer side, lean processes are the main driver of higher sustainable performance. The results show that lean processes directly improve social, environmental, and economic performance, while green processes improve only environmental performance. On the supplier side, green processes play a prominent role in reaching higher sustainable performance as they directly improve social and economic performance, while lean processes improve only economic performance. This study contributes to the supply chain management and sustainability literature and has managerial implications for firms to more effectively improve sustainable performance.
