Abstract:In the past decade, there has been a growing concern about the environmental protection in public society as governments almost all over the world have initiated certain rules and regulations to promote energy saving and minimize the production of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions in many manufacturing industries. The development of sustainable manufacturing systems is considered as one of the effective solutions to minimize the environmental impact. Lean approach is also considered as a proper method for achieving sustainability as it can reduce manufacturing wastes and increase the system efficiency and productivity. However, the lean approach does not include environmental waste of such as energy consumption and CO2 emissions when designing a lean manufacturing system. This paper addresses these issues by evaluating a sustainable manufacturing system design considering a measurement of energy consumption and CO2 emissions using different sources of energy (oil as direct energy source to generate thermal energy and oil or solar as indirect energy source to generate electricity). To this aim, a multi-objective mathematical model is developed incorporating the economic and ecological constraints aimed for minimization of the total cost, energy consumption, and CO2 emissions for a manufacturing system design. For the real world scenario, the uncertainty in a number of input parameters was handled through the development of a fuzzy multi-objective model. The study also addresses decision-making in the number of machines, the number of air-conditioning units, and the number of bulbs involved in each process of a manufacturing system in conjunction with a quantity of material flow for processed products. A real case study was used for examining the validation and applicability of the developed sustainable manufacturing system model using the fuzzy multi-objective approach.

Abstract:The closed-loop network design of a hybrid manufacturing and recovering system plays an important role on improving both the production efficiency and environmental quality, especially under a multi-product multi-stage scenario. Besides, with the growing awareness of environmental concerns by legislators, decision makers have been forced not only to enhance utilization of the returned products or components but also to control carbon emission of the whole hybrid system. To optimize the closed-loop logistics superstructure design, a multi-objective model integrating the manufacturing and recovering process in a multi-product multi-stage environment is proposed in this research. Both operations cost and environmental influence are regarded as two objective categories. In addition, the carbon emission regulation is considered in the model by integrating and characterizing the energy input and greenhouse output throughout the hybrid system. Finally, a numerical case originated from an electronic assembly plant is presented under different scenarios to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. A sensitivity analysis is given to compare the impacts of carbon emission and return rate on each sub-objective of the logistics and environmental issues.
Sustainable Hybrid Manufacturing and Refurbishing Systems with Substitution

Abstract:This study considers the planning decisions in a production facility that receives returned products as a contribution to sustainability through the reduction in waste from used products. It involves three processes: the refurbishing and disassembly of returned items and the manufacturing of new items. The process is driven by the demands of new items and collected secondhand items. In this study, we consider a downward substitution, in which new items could be used to meet the demand for secondhand items. The objective is to determine the best production planning schedule to satisfy all demands while minimizing the total costs of production and inventory. We propose and analyze different configurations distinguished by their level of integration and whether they allow substitution. Integration is mainly achieved through the sharing of the inventory of returns between the refurbishing line and the disassembly line, which responsible for feeding the manufacturing process with "as good as new" parts. The best configuration is identified based on the total cost and environmental impact. Four heuristics based on combining relax-and-fix and fix-and-optimize approaches are proposed. Numerical experiments have shown that the heuristics are very efficient, achieving gaps of less than 1% from the optimum in short CPU times for most instances. Numerical experiments have also shown that integration through the sharing of returns inventories leads to considerable cost and environmental benefits.

Abstract:In this paper, we address the problem of multi-objective production planning in a hybrid manufacturing and remanufacturing system (HMRS), introducing several significant contributions. First, we propose a new formulation of the problem that extends the existing literature by introducing a multi-objective model. This model aims to minimize both total costs and emissions within a hybrid system composed of various machines in charge of producing new and remanufactured products of different qualities. To efficiently solve this complex problem, we present an innovative approach that integrates several techniques, including NSGA-II, the entropy weight method and the TOPSIS technique. Our research focuses on the economic and environmental aspects of the remanufacturing process, seeking to determine the optimal manufacturing and remanufacturing plan. This plan aims to meet demand for new products and maximize satisfaction for remanufactured products of different qualities, while minimizing the total economic costs and emissions incurred during the various manufacturing and remanufacturing stages, including set-up, production, inventory and disposal. To address the multi-objective nature of this problem, we develop a mathematical model and introduce an approach based on the non-dominated genetic sorting algorithm (NSGA-II). To help decision-making, we use the technique of performance ranking by similarity to the ideal solution (TOPSIS) in combination with the entropy weight method (EWM) to objectively obtain the optimal compromise solution from the Pareto front provided by NSGA-II. Finally, we conduct computational experiments to assess the environmental impact of carbon emissions associated with new, remanufactured and discarded products over a finite production horizon. We illustrate the adaptability of the proposed approach by applying it to two distinct remanufacturing strategies: one where remanufacturing is used to reduce waste, and one where demand for remanufactured products is critical, with a penalty cost associated with any shortfall in demand.

Abstract:Over the last few decades, researches related to the impact of production and industrial manufacturing on environmental sustainability, coupled with multi-dimensional multi-criteria decision analysis and performance evaluation has consistently gained importance. However, no significant work in which an effort to optimize the total production process with the consideration of the positive and negative impacts of each input and output on Environmental sustainability has been noticed. The main aim of our paper is to address this gap. In this paper, an effort has been made to develop a realistic optimization model wherein a manufacturing firm has been considered to function with several decision-making units taking into account the effects of factors like profit, employment generation, social development, environmental pollution and sustainability. The various inputs employed and outputs produced by the firm are responsible for having negative impacts on the environment, besides creative value generation. With due consideration to both these values instead of mere profit, the model determines and explores the firm’s decision considering different objectives. The optimization problem has been solved by a GA developed by us and demonstrated with numerical examples. The solutions of the numerical examples point towards some interesting revelations and indicate some prospective future research directions which contributes to this field of research.

Abstract:In today’s global and volatile market, manufacturing enterprises are subjected to intense global competition, increasingly shortened product lifecycles and increased product customization and tailoring while being pressured to maintain a high degree of cost-efficiency. As a consequence, production organizations are required to introduce more new product models and variants into existing production setups, leading to more frequent ramp-up and ramp-down scenarios when transitioning from an outgoing product to a new one. In order to cope with such as challenge, the setup of the production systems needs to shift towards reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS), making production capable of changing its function and capacity according to the product and customer demand. Consequently, this study presents a simulation-based multi-objective optimization approach for system re-configuration of multi-part flow lines subjected to scalable capacities, which addresses the assignment of the tasks to workstations and buffer allocation for simultaneously maximizing throughput and minimizing total buffer capacity to cope with fluctuating production volumes. To this extent, the results from the study demonstrate the benefits that decision-makers could gain, particularly when they face trade-off decisions inherent in today’s manufacturing industry by adopting a Simulation-Based Multi-Objective Optimization (SMO) approach.

Abstract:In the manufacturing industry, target-oriented and efficient use of resources is gaining importance, alongside economic optimization. The economic and organizational optimization of manufacturing systems according to the lean principles is only partly compatible with the goals of resource-efficient manufacturing. Therefore, an approach is sought to improve individual analyses of manufacturing systems. This paper proposes an approach for the multi-objective optimization of lean and resource-efficient manufacturing systems. To predict the dynamic effects of several configurations of manufacturing systems, material, energy, and information flows of a discrete event simulation are coupled with an assessment model, based on objectives of lean and resource-efficient manufacturing. Using design of experiments, Gaussian process meta-models are computed for the behavior of the simulation model. These meta-models allow the approximation of the system behavior to be computed in a short period of time and enable extensive multi-objective optimization and more adequate decision-making support systems. The proposed approach is tested in the metalworking industry.
Sustainable Production Scheduling with On-Site Intermittent Renewable Energy and Demand-Side Management: A Feed-Animal Case Study

Abstract:By shifting towards renewable energy sources, manufacturing facilities can significantly reduce their carbon footprint. This environmental issue can be addressed by developing sustainable production through on-site renewable electricity generation and demand-side management policies. In this study, the energy required to power the manufacturing system is obtained from different energy sources: the conventional grid, on-site renewable energy, and an energy storage system. The main objective is to generate a production schedule for a flexible multi-process and multi-product manufacturing system that optimizes the utilization and procurement of electricity without affecting the final demand. A mathematical programming model is proposed to minimize both the total production costs and energy costs, considering a time-of-use pricing policy and an incentive-based program. The uncertainty in renewable energy generation, specifically under the worst-case scenario, is taken into account and the model is transformed into a robust two-stage optimization model. To solve this model, a decomposition approach based on a genetic algorithm is applied. The effectiveness of the proposed model and algorithm is tested on a real industry case involving feed-animal products. A sensitivity analysis is conducted by modifying problem parameters. Finally, a comparison with the nested Column and Constraint Generation algorithm is performed. The obtained results from these analyses validated the proposed model and algorithm.

Abstract:With the increase in awareness of energy conservation and emission reduction in the manufacturing sector, the energy efficiency optimization of the production process is considered an effective way to promote cleaner production and environmentally sustainable development. Moreover, the transportation process and its energy consumption are non-negligible during the entire workshop production process. In practice, cutting tool degradation during operation is inevitable, which causes the actual processing time of work to be extended, so it is necessary to consider the degradation effects and imperfect maintenance. To reduce the total energy consumption in the manufacturing workshop with degradation effects and imperfect maintenance, this paper constructs a novel integrated optimization model including the flexible job-shop scheduling problem (FJSP), forklift transportation and imperfect cutting tool maintenance. First, an imperfect cutting tool maintenance with degradation effect strategy is presented, which makes the actual processing time of each operation more closely approximate the real-world processing situation. Second, an integrated multi-objective optimization model is formulated to simultaneously minimize the makespan, total tardiness, total production cost and total energy consumption. Third, a hybrid multi-objective evolutionary algorithm with Pareto elite storage strategy (HMOEA/P) is proposed to address the model. More precisely, three improved operations are presented: hybrid dominance principle, local search algorithms and Pareto elite preservation strategy. The effectiveness and feasibility of the parameter setting, improved operations and the proposed algorithm are separately demonstrated by the comparative experiments. Last, the superiority of the integrated multi-objective optimization model is proven by comparing different maintenance strategies and energy consumption models.

Abstract:In today's uncertain and competitive market, where manufacturing enterprises are subjected to increasingly shortened product lifecycles and frequent volume changes, reconfigurable manufacturing system (RMS) applications play significant roles in the success of the manufacturing industry. Despite the advantages offered by RMSs, achieving high efficiency constitutes a challenging task for stakeholders and decision makers when they face the trade-off decisions inherent in these complex systems. This study addresses work task and resource allocations to workstations together with buffer capacity allocation in an RMS. The aim is to simultaneously maximize throughput and to minimize total buffer capacity under fluctuating production volumes and capacity changes while considering the stochastic behavior of the system. An enhanced simulation-based multi-objective optimization (SMO) approach with customized simulation and optimization components is proposed to address the abovementioned challenges. Apart from presenting the optimal solutions subject to volume and capacity changes, the proposed approach supports decision makers with knowledge discovery to further understand RMS design. In particular, this study presents a customized SMO approach combined with a novel flexible pattern mining method for optimizing an RMS and conducts post-optimal analyses. To this extent, this study demonstrates the benefits of applying SMO and knowledge discovery methods for fast decision support and production planning of an RMS.

Abstract:In today’s competitive environments, companies need to be cost-effective, environmental-friendly, and social-friendly to deal with several challenges that exist in markets. In this context, reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMSs) have emerged to fulfil these requirements. RMS is one of the attractive manufacturing paradigms. Machine components, software, or material handling units can be added, removed, modified, or interchanged as needed and imposed by the necessity to react rapidly and cost-effectively to changing. A multi-objective multi-product process and production planning problem in a sustainable reconfigurable manufacturing environment (SRMS) is considered in this paper. Three pillars of sustainability, respectively social, environmental, and economic are formulated and optimised. First, a linear mixed-integer model is proposed. Second, a Lagrangian relaxation-based approach is developed to solve the problem on the large scales, where an exact method is used to solve the problem in small and medium cases with GAMS software. To illustrate the applicability of the proposed approaches, some numerical examples and analyses are presented. Finally, a sensibility study of the problem according to some parameters is performed.

Abstract:This study introduces a new three-stage optimization approach with a circular economy perspective for sustainable-resilient supply chain network design for perishable products. The proposed model specifies the number of facilities and the number of products flowing within the supply chain in case of disruption. The three contributions of the mathematical model are considering product lifetime, monitoring financial resources, and selecting technology levels. It incorporates suppliers' green image and circular economy rating in the supply chain network structure. Epistemic uncertainty is considered in the optimization model to deal with the unknown capacity, cost, and demand. The study includes three main stages. In the first stage, to determine suppliers' green image and circular economy rating, a new interval-valued fuzzy (IVF)-compromise decision-making method is presented based on possibilistic mean and standard deviation evaluations. In the second stage a new multi-objective mathematical model is proposed to reduce total costs, reduce environmental impacts, and increase social sustainability. To deal with uncertainties in the mathematical model, a new IVF-robust solution approach is introduced. In the third stage, the solution is incorporated with the AUGMECON2 method to produce separate Pareto-optimal solutions, offering a hybrid of trade-offs between cost, emissions, and social responsibility. A case study in the food, dairy, and drink industry is presented to show how the suggested approach might be applied. Finally, several sensitivity analyses and comprehensive comparisons of the proposed approach with the literature were performed.

Abstract:The aim of this project is to find an appropriate mode for green sustainable manufacturing and production. Thus, the concept of this model encourages the development of synergy and leverage of resource networks in order to reduce waste and pollution, and to share resource efficiently. To the best of our knowledge, there is currently no other general mathematical model for designing and optimizing exchange material/energy flows in an industrial park. The purpose of this work is to propose a relative advanced dynamic multi-objective model. Simulations have been performed by using the NIMBUS (Nondifferentiable Interactive Multi-objective Bundle-based optimization System) method. This model can assure a win-win situation for industries and environment.

Abstract:With the escalating integration of renewable energy sources (RESs) within the manufacturing sector, the synergy between energy and production management has gained paramount importance. To harmonise energy efficiency with production effectiveness, the concept of energy-aware scheduling, comprising off-line, on-line, and hybrid scheduling, has been introduced. While each approach has merits and drawbacks in handling unexpected disturbances, recovering optimal performance, and managing computational costs, their designs often tend to be ad hoc. Currently, there is a lack of a systematic design that effectively balances computational costs, robustness to unexpected disturbances, and optimal performance. Moreover, existing results do not fully leverage the flexibility in factories integrated with Renewable Energy Sources (RESs). In response, this study introduces the paradigm of event-triggered hybrid scheduling (ETHS) to achieve a balance among optimality, robustness, and computational cost by fully exploring the system's flexibility. The efficacy of ETHS is empirically demonstrated through a comprehensive case study involving a real-world manufacturing facility. Diverse scenarios are scrutinised, accompanied by sensitivity analyses pertaining to parameter choices. The outcomes conspicuously underscore the potency of ETHS in facilitating the harmonious alignment of energy and production management within the ambit of manufacturing industries.

60 GHz band 2×4 dipole array antenna using multi stacked organic substrates structure

Abstract:Wireless systems using license-free 60 GHz band have been focused as Gbps ultra-high speed data rate short range communication. Beamforming techniques based on array antennas have been employed to obtain high directional antenna gain. In order to realize an array antenna in millimeter-wave frequency range, the accuracy of positioning of the antenna elements becomes considerably important. Conventional 60 GHz band beamforming antennas have used a patch array antenna configuration. Since the patch antenna is patterned on a substrate, high accuracy of the positioning is obtained. These patch array antennas realize a main beam in the vertical direction of the substrate. In order to realize a main beam in the horizontal direction of the substrate, 1×4 dipole array antenna was developed and beam scanning in the azimuth plane was possible. For 2-dimensional (azimuth/elevation) beam scanning, 3×2 vivaldi array antenna using multi-layered substrate was reported. It showed the 2-dimensional beam scanning function, but a high antenna gain could not be obtained. Since the antenna elements were fabricated in a multi-layered substrate, the antenna elements were placed very close (nearly 1/25 λ0) in elevation direction and it caused relatively low antenna gain.

Abstract:Global energy consumption is projected to grow by nearly 50% as of 2018, reaching a peak of 910.7 quadrillion BTU in 2050. The industrial sector accounts for the largest share of the energy consumed, making energy awareness on the shop floors imperative for promoting industrial sustainable development. Considering a growing awareness of the importance of sustainability, production planning and control require the incorporation of time-of-use electricity pricing models into scheduling problems for well-informed energy-saving decisions. Besides, modern manufacturing emphasizes the role of human factors in production processes. This study proposes a new approach for optimizing the hybrid flow-shop scheduling problems (HFSP) considering time-of-use electricity pricing, workers' flexibility, and sequence-dependent setup time (SDST). Novelties of this study are twofold: to extend a new mathematical formulation and to develop an improved multi-objective optimization algorithm. Extensive numerical experiments are conducted to evaluate the performance of the developed solution method, the adjusted multi-objective genetic algorithm (AMOGA), comparing it with the state-of-the-art, i.e., strength Pareto evolutionary algorithm (SPEA2), and Pareto envelop-based selection algorithm (PESA2). It is shown that AMOGA performs better than the benchmarks considering the mean ideal distance, inverted generational distance, diversification, and quality metrics, providing more versatile and better solutions for production and energy efficiency.

Abstract:Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose an integrated approach for assessing the sustainability of production and simplifying the improvement tasks in complex manufacturing processes. Design/methodology/approach The proposed approach has been investigated the integration of value stream mapping (VSM), analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and technique for order preference by similarity to ideal solution (TOPSIS). VSM is used as a basic structure for assessing and improving the sustainability of the manufacturing process. AHP is used for weighting the sustainability indicators and TOPSIS for prioritizing the operations of a manufacturing process regarding the improvement side. Findings The results carried out from this study help the managers’ staff in organizing the improvement phase in the complex manufacturing processes through computing the importance degree of each indicator and determining the most influential operations on the production. Research limitations/implications The major limitations of this paper are that one case study was considered. In addition, to an average set of sustainability indicators that have been treated. Originality/value The novelty of this research is expressed by the development of an extended VSM in complex manufacturing processes. In addition, the proposed approach contributes with a new improvement strategy through integrating the multi-criteria decision approaches with VSM method to solve the complexity of the improvement process from sustainability viewpoints.

Abstract:Application of reconfigurable manufacturing systems (RMS) plays a significant role in manufacturing companies’ success in the current fiercely competitive market. Despite the RMS’s advantages, designing these systems to achieve a high-efficiency level is a complex and challenging task that requires the use of optimization techniques. This study proposes a simulation-based optimization approach for optimal allocation of work tasks and resources (i.e., machines) to workstations. Abstract:In the context of increasingly prominent product personalization and customization trends, intelligent manufacturing-oriented turnkey projects can provide manufacturers with fast and convenient turnkey services for manufacturing systems. Their key characteristic is the transformation of the traditional design process into a configuration process. However, the scope of configuration resources in existing research is limited; the cost and time required for manufacturing system construction are overlooked; and the integration of the system layout configuration is rarely considered, making it difficult to meet the manufacturing system configuration requirements of turnkey projects. In response, this study establishes a multi-factor integrated rapid configuration model and proposes a solution method for manufacturing systems based on the requirements of turnkey projects. The configuration model considers the system construction cost and duration and the product manufacturing cost and duration, as optimization objectives. The differences in product feature-dividing schemes and configuration of processes, equipment, tools, fixtures, and layouts were considered simultaneously. The proposed model-solving method is a three-layer hybrid optimization algorithm framework with two optimization algorithm modules and an intermediate algorithm module. Four hybrid configuration algorithms are established based on non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-III (NSGAIII), non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm-II (NSGAII), multi-objective simulated annealing (MOSA), multi-objective neighborhood search (MONS), and tabu search (TS). These algorithms are compared and validated through a hydraulic valve block production case, and the TS and NSGAIII (TS-NSGAIII) hybrid algorithm exhibits the best performance. This case demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed model and solution method.

Abstract:<p>The manufacturing of large marine power component including cutting, welding, shrink fitting, heat treatment is a typical industry with high-material consumption, high-energy consumption and high-environmental pollution. It is noted that green manufacturing is gradually emerging. Comprehensive optimization of energy consumption for multiple processes is an effective way to promote a cleaner production industry. To reduce carbon emission from the plant-wide production processes, a new integrated sustainable scheduling approach of mixed-line production with heterogeneous manufacturing technologies is presented in this paper. In this approach, three carbon emission formulations related to cutting, welding and heat treatment are established respectively by analyzing energy consumption and its composition. An optimization mathematical model with the goal of minimizing the total emission of carbon dioxide and the total makespan is then established. In order to solve the model, the genetic algorithm is adaptively improved. The niche and elite retention strategy are introduced in the selection operator, and the dynamic crossover operator is set to adjust the genetic parameters with its iteration and adaptive function values to improve the efficiency of the algorithm. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated by comparing with two types of models considering the makespan and carbon emission respectively. The results indicate that the proposed method satisfactorily tackles the mixed-line production scheduling problem of large marine power component manufacturing.</p>
