Abstract:Amidst escalating fuel expenses and growing concerns over greenhouse gas pollution, the adoption of renewable alternative energy sources has become increasingly imperative. In response, scientists are fervently dedicated to identifying energy-saving solutions that are readily adaptable. Notably, silica aerogels have demonstrated remarkable efficacy in temperature management under both hot and cold conditions, while phase change materials are renowned for their capacity to store thermal energy. The study examined the effect of initial pressure on the thermal performance of silica aerogel/PCM/CuO nanostructure in a cylindrical duct. This was investigated using MD simulations and the LAMMPS software. The study will investigate several elements, such as density, velocity, temperature patterns, heat flux, thermal conductivity, and charge time or discharge time of the simulated structure. According to the results, with an increase in the initial pressure, the maximum density increases from 0.0838 atom/Å 3 to 0.0852 atom/Å 3, and the maximum velocity decreases from 0.0091 Å/fs to 0.0081 Å/fs. Also, the findings show that, by increasing the initial pressure, the temperature decreases from 931.42 K to 895.63 K. And thermal conductivity and heat flux decreases to 1.56 W/m.K and 56.66 W/m 2 with increasing the initial pressure to 5 bar. Finally, the results show that charging time increases to 6.34 ns at 5 bar. The increase in charging time with increasing initial pressure may be attributed to the reduced mobility of particles within the structure as a result of the higher pressure. The findings of this study can help for a better understanding of energy-saving solutions, advanced thermal management systems, and the design of efficient energy storage technologies tailored to specific pressure-related operating conditions.

Abstract:Carbon deposition process on activated carbon (AC) in order to produce carbon molecular sieve (CMS) was simulated using molecular dynamics simulation. The proposed activated carbon for simulation includes micropores with different characteristic diameters and lengths. Three different temperatures of 773 K, 973 K, and 1,273 K were selected to investigate the optimum deposition temperature. Simulation results show that the carbon deposition process at 973 K creates the best adsorbent structure. While at lower temperature some micropore openings are blocked with carbon atoms, at higher temperature the number of deposited carbons on the micropores does not change significantly. Also, carbon deposition process confirms the pseudo-second-order kinetic model with an endothermic behavior. To evaluate the sieving property of adsorbent products, nitrogen and oxygen adsorption on the initial and final adsorbent products are examined. Results show that there is not any considerable difference between the equilibrium adsorption amounts of nitrogen and oxygen on the initial and final adsorbents especially at low pressure (P<10 atm). Although, adsorption kinetics curves of these gases change significantly after the carbon deposition process in comparison with the initial sample. These observations indicate that the final adsorbent has high selectivity towards oxygen compared with the nitrogen, so it can be called a carbon molecular sieve. All simulated results are in good agreement with experiments.

Abstract:In industrial processes membranes made of composite polymer material are widely employed to separate gas mixtures. These membranes have better performance than membranes consisting of polymer alone. To understand the mechanism and therefore aid membrane design it is essential to explore the penetrant transport in the complex composites from the molecular level, but few researchers have done such research to our knowledge. Silica has different crystalline form. The transport properties of penetrants in the composite of PMP and nanoparticles of these two types of silica are obviously different. Molecular dynamics method was done successfully in the research to explore the transport of different penetrants in the composites of PMP and nanoparticles of two forms of silica, the cristobalite form (PMPC) and the faujasite form (PMPF). .

Abstract:Carbon–silica materials with hierarchical pores consisting of micropores and mesopores were prepared by introducing nanocarbon microspheres derived from biomass sugar into silica gel channels in a hydrothermal environment. The physicochemical properties of the materials were characterized by nitrogen physical adsorption (BET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and thermogravimetric (TG), and the adsorption properties of various organic waste gases were investigated. The results showed that microporous carbon materials were introduced successfully into the silica gel channels, thus showing the high adsorption capacity of activated carbon in high humidity organic waste gas, and the high stability and mechanical strength of the silica gel. The dynamic adsorption behavior confirmed that the carbon–silica material had excellent adsorption capacity for different volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Furthermore, the carbon–silica material exhibited excellent desorption characteristics: adsorbed toluene was completely desorbed at 150°C, thereby showing superior regeneration characteristics. Both features were attributed to the formation of hierarchical pores.

Abstract:The use of nanofluids has been recently of great interest to separate acidic contaminants such as CO2. The main objective of this research is to assess the influence of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) addition to distilled water on enhancing the CO2 molecular separation through a porous membrane contactor (PMC). For this aim, a comprehensive model is developed based on non-wetted and counter-current operational modes to evaluate the principal mass and momentum transport equations in tube, membrane and shell compartments of PMC. Consequently, a CFD-based axisymmetrical simulation is implemented according to finite element technique (FET) to prognosticate the results. It is found from the results that the addition of 0.1 wt% carbon nanotubes (CNTs) particles to water significantly enhances the mass transfer and consequently the CO2 molecular separation efficiency from 38 to 63.3%. This considerable enhancement can be justified due to the existence of two momentous phenomena including Brownian motion and Grazing effect, which enhance the mass transport of CO2 molecules in the PMC. Moreover, the effect of CNTs concentration, some membrane's parameters such as number of hollow fibers and porosity and also some module's design parameters including module radius and length on the CO2 separation performance are investigated in this paper as another highlight of the current work.

Abstract:Carbon molecular sieves (CMSs) are the key adsorbents for gas separation through pressure swing adsorption (PSA), a promising technique that has found many applications in air separation and natural gas purification. However, the current process of preparing CMSs with finely tuned nanopores based on the repeated CVD process is technically challenging and energy-consuming. In this work, we report a facial method of preparing CMSs through the one-step carbonization of a metal–organic framework. The direct carbonization of an rht-type metal–organic framework (MOF) affords a type of CMSs with an ultramicro–nanoporous structure that is comparable with the kinetic diameter of small gases (N2, O2, CO2, and CH4). As a result, this type of CMSs shows significant differences in both equilibrium adsorption properties and diffusion rates for O2/N2 and CO2/CH4. The kinetic separation coefficient for O2/N2 and CO2/CH4 is high up to 47 and 105, respectively. In addition to excellent equilibrium and kinetic selectivity, this MOF-CMS shows compatibility between equilibrium and kinetic adsorption properties, giving rise to a thermodynamic–kinetic synergistic effect for O2/N2 and CO2/CH4 separation. These outstanding separation performances can be attributed to the ultramicro–nanopores of CMSs, which are modulated by the uniform pore structure of the MOF precursor. The high selectivity combined with the facial preparation process for this CMS may open an avenue of preparing nanoporous CMSs with desired functionalities.

Abstract:Homogeneously dispersing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is crucial for minimizing agglomeration issues commonly encountered in commercially available CNTs samples, thereby enhancing their unique mechanical, electrical, thermal, and optical properties. In this study, we propose an alternative hydrostatic pressure-driven dispersion approach to effectively disperse CNTs and assess the impact of hydrostatic pressure on CNTs dispersion in deionized water (DIW). Our results demonstrate that ultrasonic treatment under a hydrostatic pressure of 0.1 MPa enables the achievement of a high concentration of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) at approximately 4.23 mg/ml, significantly surpassing concentrations reported in recent studies (∼1.9 mg/ml). Thin buckypaper generated from these solutions exhibit exceptional electrical conductivity (∼4938 S/m). Numerical modeling demonstrates that the shock wave induced by bubble implosion is significantly enhanced, reaching 80 MPa under hydrostatic pressure, markedly higher than atmospheric pressure in previous studies (∼1.6 MPa). This enhancement leads to a twofold improvement in dispersion efficiency. For the first time, we reveal the underlying mechanism of nanobubbles (NBs) in dispersion stability. Our experimental results show a significant increase in the generation of NBs resulting from ultrasonic bubble collapse under hydrostatic pressure. This phenomenon plays a crucial role in the long-term stabilization of dispersion, which we observed over several months. The presence of negatively charged hydroxyl groups on the interface of the NBs is identified as a key factor in this stabilization process. The hydrostatic pressure-driven dispersion approach presented is essential for the large-scale dispersion of CNTs and other nanomaterials.

Abstract:Due to the rise in gas prices and the surge in greenhouse gas emissions, individuals have turned to various renewable energy options. Silica aerogels are highly effective to maintain either hot or cold Temps. Insulation options with proficient thermal storage capabilities, such as phase change materials (PCMs), are highly beneficial. This study aimed to determine how the size of copper oxide nanoparticles affected the behavior of a silica aerogel/paraffin nanostructure within a duct. The researchers utilized computer simulation as a means to examine the thermal behavior (TB) and complex properties of the particles. To accomplish this objective, we evaluated the effect of various factors, such as the size of NPs incorporated into the structure, on density, temperature (Temp), heat flux, thermal conductivity, and charging and discharging time. According to the results, by increasing the radius of the nanoparticle to 10 Å, the density value in the atomic sample reached 0.1353 atoms/Å 3 . Moreover, the velocity (Vel) decreased to 0.0085 Å/fs. As the radius was 10 A, the thermal conductivity decreases from 1.74 W/m.k to 1.65 W/m.K. Also, by increasing the size of the nanoparticle, the charging and discharging time in the target atomic sample increases and decreases to 6.28 ns and 8.52 ns, respectively.

Optimal Performance of Nanoporous Carbons on Adsorptive Separation of CO 2 from Flue Gas

Abstract:We adopted grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations to comprehensively investigate the adsorption of CO2/N2 mixtures of different compositions in well-shaped single-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs), stratified activated carbon fiber (ACF-15), and completely disordered silicon carbide-derived carbon (SiC-DC) at different temperatures. It was found that reducing the pore size initially enhances the adsorption and selectivity of CO2 for enhanced adsorbate–adsorbent interactions, which, however, eventually reduces the selectivity for the enhanced entropic effect. It was also revealed that formation of a cylindrical pore could dramatically enhance the potential field, emphasizing that the morphology of the carbons could have a significant impact on the adsorptive separation performance. While increasing the temperature reduces the separation performance, the enhanced mole fraction of CO2 after multistage separation facilitates the subsequent flue gas separation procedure. A performance coefficient was adopted to comprehensively measure the separation performance of nanoporous carbons on the separation of CO2 from CO2/N2 mixtures with varying compositions and at different temperatures. Abstract:The effect of temperature on the permeation of oxygen, nitrogen and their binary gas mixture through carbon membranes were investigated using a dual control volume grand canonical molecular dynamics method. The two-dimensional slit was used instead of one-dimensional pore, and a novel iteration was introduced to overcome the difficulty of ignoring the effect of permeation side pressure and composition on gas transports. The results showed that both oxygen and nitrogen followed Knudsen diffusion mechanism when they permeated through carbon membranes as pure component, respectively. In this case, nitrogen had a rather higher permeability than oxygen. However, oxygen had a higher permeability than nitrogen due to competitive adsorption at low temperature when their mixture flowed through membranes. In addition, the pore width impacted the permeability strongly, especially when the. pore was very small, and molecular sieving predominated the separation of oxygen/nitrogen. But at the high temperature adsorption hardly affected the separation of oxygen/nitrogen.

Abstract:Membrane distillation (MD) is a process driven by the vapor pressure difference dependent on temperature variation, utilizing a hydrophobic porous membrane. MD operates at low pressure and temperature, exhibiting resilience to osmotic pressure. However, a challenge arises as the membrane performance diminishes due to temperature polarization (TP) occurring on the membrane surface. The vacuum MD process leverages the application of a vacuum to generate a higher vapor pressure difference, enhancing the flux and mitigating TP issues. Nevertheless, membrane fouling leads to decreased performance, causing membrane wetting and reducing the ion removal efficiency. This study investigates membrane fouling phenomena induced by various silica nanoparticle sizes (400, 900, and 1300 nm). The patterns of membrane fouling, as indicated by the flux reduction, vary depending on the particle size. Distinct MD performances are observed with changes in the feed water temperature and flow rate. When examining the membrane fouling mechanism for particles with a porosity resembling actual particulate materials, a fouling form similar to the solid type is noted. Therefore, this study elucidates the impact of particulate matter on membrane fouling under diverse conditions.

Abstract:The interfacial barrier of entry for light gas transport in a nanopore was a crucial factor to determine the separation efficiency in membrane technologies. To examine this effect, amorphous silica was prepared by sol–gel process, and its characterization results revealed that the commonly used cylindrical pore shape failed to represent the adsorption behavior of gases, but instead the pore shape had to be represented by a slit pore model. A finite element method (FEM) was developed to analyze the interfacial resistance by integrating a Lennard-Jones (LJ) potential over the layer area. It was found that the strong repulsion/attraction at the pore interface could be paired with the motion energy of guest molecules to predict the ideal selectivity between gases, thereby providing a solution to preliminarily screen the separation performance among a host of membrane candidates.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Effects of synthesis conditions on particle size and pore size of spherical mesoporous silica

Abstract:The particle size and pore size of spherical mesoporous silica materials play significant roles in their application. However, relatively limited systematic research has been conducted on how preparation conditions influence these properties. In particular, the effects of some important factors have not been adequately studied, including reaction time, reaction temperature, and organic solvent type. In this work, octane and water were used as solvents, and tetraethyl orthosilicate was used as the silicon source to systematically study the effects of reaction time, reaction temperature, different organic solvents, octane/water mass ratio, styrene template concentration, and surfactant (cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, CTAB)/H2O mass ratio on the particle morphology, particle size, and pore size of silica. The results suggest that the above-mentioned neglected factors exert a substantial influence on both particle size and pore size. In the experimental temperature range, the pore diameter decreases and the particle size increases with increasing temperature. The maximum particle size and pore size are achieved after a reaction time of 3 h, and a further increase in reaction time leads to a smaller particle size and pore size. As the number of carbon atoms in the organic solvent decreases, the pore size also gradually increases. Styrene and organic solvents that dissolve in CTAB micelles are crucial factors in pore formation, while the aggregation of the swollen CTAB micelles influences the particle size. The changes in the pore structure stability and hydroxyl density of the synthesized samples in water were also studied. After undergoing water treatment at temperatures ranging from 20 to 60 °C for 72 h, both the pore structure and morphology remain relatively unchanged. When the temperature increases, the surface hydroxyl density exhibits a more pronounced increase in the presence of water. After water treatment for 5 h, the surface hydroxyl density reaches saturation.

Abstract:Identifying a means of effectively separating and adsorbing the harmful constituents from flue gas emissions is always crucial for the protection of human health and the environment. All-atom molecular dynamics were employed to analyze the dynamic behaviour of flue gas molecules in Au nanopores. The influences of various system temperatures, gas concentrations, and pore sizes on the adsorption conformation, diffusion coefficient, average adsorption energy, and adsorption probability of the flue gases inside an Au nanopore were examined. Results showed that when the temperature rose to 300∼400 K, the gaseous H 2 S constituent in the flue gas was swiftly adsorbed to the nanopore walls due to the strong H 2 S-Au interactions, enabling an effective separation of H 2 S from the flue gas. In addition, increases in pore size ( d ≥ 40 Å) reduced the adsorption probability of CO 2 and CO on the nanopore surfaces, which also promoted constituent separations of H 2 S from the flue gas. When the concentration of flue gas exceeded 6.6 mol/L, hydrogen bonds of H 2 O clusters and their networks entangled, impeding molecular diffusion and thereby reducing the functionality of nanopore-trapping molecules. The results presented in this paper provide a valuable reference for filter material design for flue gas depuration.

Abstract:Molecular dynamics (MD) simulations were performed at 298.15 K and 1 atm in order to study microstructure and transport behaviors of polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) membranes containing 0%–8% SiO2 nanoparticles used for the separation of thiophene from n-octane. It was found that the fractional free volume (FFV) of 0% SiO2 was the highest (47.24%) among five nanocomposite membranes and addition of 2%–8% silica nanoparticles led to dramatic decrease in the FFV of the cells. The x-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns of all membranes showed that they had a semi-crystalline structure containing a broad peak around 15°–18°. The radial distribution function (RDF) analysis proved that the smallest C(CH2-octane)–O(SiO2), C(PDMS)–O(SiO2) and H(thiophene)–O(SiO2) distances were present in 4% SiO2 membrane reflecting the silica–octane, silica–polymer and silica–thiophene interactions were the strongest in this membrane. The mean squared displacement (MSD) and diffusion coefficients of n-octane were both small in the 6% silica membrane but they were high for thiophene suggesting this membrane was the most suitable for the desulfurization process and separation of thiophene from n-octane.

Effect of Sintering Conditions on Performance of Silicon Carbide Microfiltration Membranes

Abstract:Silicon carbide (SiC) microfiltration membranes were fabricated via dip-coating on tubular SiC supports with an average pore size of 1.4 μm with SiC powder (the average particle size of 0.8 μm) as a raw material and PMAA-NH4 as a dispersant. The effects of pH value and dispersant amount on the stability of SiC suspensions, as well as the effects of sintering temperature and atmosphere (i.e., Air, Ar and N2) on the properties of SiC microfiltration membranes were investigated. The results show that the stable slurry can be obtained when pH value is 10 and PMAA-NH4 amount is 0.6% (in mass fraction). The SiC microfiltration membrane sintered in N2 at 1 200 °Cshows the optimized performance (i.e., the average pore size of 78 nm, the membrane thickness of 10 μm and the pure water permeability of 860 L·m·h·bar).

Molecular Dynamics Simulation of Transport and Separation of Carbon Dioxide–Alkane Mixtures in a Nanoporous Membrane Under Sub- and Supercritical Conditions

Abstract:Extensive nonequilibrium molecular dynamics simulations were carried out to study the transport and separation of binary mixtures of CO2\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$\hbox {CO}_2$$\end{document} and n-alkane chains in a molecular pore network model of nanoporous carbon molecular-sieve membrane. Separation of both sub- and supercritical mixtures was studied. The membrane was generated atomistically by the Voronoi tessellation of the space, using tens of thousands of atoms. The simulations indicate that there is an optimal pressure drop for separation of mixtures of CO2\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$\hbox {CO}_2$$\end{document} and n-alkanes, when the mixtures enter the membrane under supercritical conditions. In addition, separation of CO2\documentclass[12pt]{minimal}\usepackage{amsmath}\usepackage{wasysym}\usepackage{amsfonts}\usepackage{amssymb}\usepackage{amsbsy}\usepackage{mathrsfs}\usepackage{upgreek}\setlength{\oddsidemargin}{-69pt}\begin{document}$$\hbox {CO}_2$$\end{document} from n-alkanes becomes increasingly more efficient as the size of the alkane increases.

Abstract:Based on molecular dynamics simulations for the transport of pure nitrogen (N(2)), oxygen (O(2)) and their mixture in kinked single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs), molecular sieving by the kinked model of SWCNTs is presented. The influences of gas pressure, temperature and the component ratio of N(2) in the mixture on gas separation are investigated. Considering the tradeoff between the permeability and the purity of O(2), the results show that a large gas pressure, 300-500K of gas temperature and a low component ratio of N(2) in the N(2)-O(2) mixture can be advantageous to the efficiency of gas separation. The purity of O(2) can be kept higher than 80% when the component ratio of N(2) is lower than 3/4, which will be advantageous to the design of multi-level gas separation mechanisms. The findings may provide theoretical references for the design and manufacture of molecular sieving devices in engineering applications.
Preparation of NH2-SH-GO/SWCNTs based on graphene oxide/single-walled carbon nanotubes for CO2 and N2 separation from blast furnace gas

Abstract:The traditional molecular sieve membrane for gas separation is mostly prepared by zeolite, MOFs and other materials. Nano-carbon materials such as graphene and carbon nanotubes have been studied in the field of gas separation in recent years which have large specific surface area and high porosity. The performance of carbon nanotubes and graphene can be effectively improved by adding corresponding groups. A novel molecular sieve membrane was synthesized by sulfhydryl and amino-modified graphene oxide/oxidized single-walled carbon nanotubes (NH2-SH-GO/SWCNTs). The composite material was characterized by transmission electron microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, thermo-gravimetric analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller specific surface area analyzers. The results reveal that laminated graphene oxide and tubular single-walled carbon nanotubes are intertwined and carbon nanotubes attach onto the surface of GO or intercalate into the GO sheets to form a spatial stereoscopic structure. TGA results demonstrate that the loading amount of amino and sulfydryl groups in NH2-SH-GO/SWCNTs is about 11.91 wt%. When the intake pressure of N2 is 0.10 MPa, the permeability coefficient for N2 passing through NH2-SH-GO/SWCNTs is 1829 Barrer. With the increase of temperature, permeability coefficient for N2 decreases, while it increases as the intake pressure rises. The experimental results for mixed gases passing through NH2-SH-GO/SWCNTs show that, when P 0 = 0.10 MPa and T = 323 K, the permeability coefficient for CO2 is 1896 Barrer, while that for CO is only 116 Barrer. At 323 K, selectivity for N2/CO, CO2/CO and CO2/N2 is 39.2, 46.3, and 9.3, respectively. These results indicate that NH2-SH-GO/SWCNTs may be a promising molecular sieve membrane for gas separation.

Abstract:Cavitation pressure is a measure of liquid tensile strength, which determines the cavitation inception in hydrodynamics. The previously measured pressure is known to be significantly different because of the presence of solid impurities serving as nucleation sites. A recent study reported that water can be stabilized with solid impurities such, as SiO2 nanoparticles. These nanoparticles are supposed to form stabilized hydrogen bonds with water. In the present paper, the effects of SiO2 nanoparticles on cavitation inception are investigated experimentally through acoustic method at 1 atm and temperatures from 0 degrees C to 80 degrees C. With diameters of 20, 50 and 100 nm, SiO2 particles are dispersed into degassed water. The dimensionless free energy of critical bubble is also calculated. Both the cavitation pressure and the free energy of critical bubble of water with SiO2 decrease when compared with those of ultrapure water. The increase of particle concentration further decrease the cavitation pressure and the free energy of critical bubble. Increasing particle size, the cavitation pressure has no measurable difference. Results show that SiO2 nanoparticles are destabilizing impurities, which always promote the cavitation inception of water within current experimental conditions. (C) 2016 Elsevier Inc.
