Abstract:Mn4+-activated fluoride phosphor is one of the crucial red-emitting phosphors for white lighting systems driven by light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this study, we successfully synthesized high-quality K2Si1-xF6:xMn4+ (x = 0.03–0.70) crystals, measuring approximately 1 mm in size, through a new cooling-induced crystallization method. These crystals exhibit narrow line-type photoluminescence emission bands and exceptional optical properties, including high absorption efficiency up to 93.5% and external quantum efficiency up to 68.9%, which are among the record values for Mn4+-doped fluoride phosphors. Furthermore, they exhibit a notably elevated luminescence thermal quenching temperature (T1/2) exceeding 500 K. A comprehensive investigation into the phase transformation, zero-phonon line tuning, and fluorescence decay behavior as a function of increasing Mn concentrations was also conducted. Practical applications were demonstrated through the fabrication of warm white LEDs, integrating a blue LED with garnet yellow phosphor and the as-synthesized K2Si1-xF6:xMn4+ (nominal x of 0.20) crystals as the red component. The white LEDs exhibit an impressive luminous efficacy of 192.1 lm·W−1, a color rendering index of Ra = 87.5 and R9 = 62 under a 20 mA driving current. Our study highlights the outstanding properties of Mn4+-doped fluoride crystals with bulk size rather than conventional powdery form and the potential of the cooling-induced crystallization method for cultivating the crystals.

Abstract:Series of Ca(La1−xEux)4Si3O13 red emitting phosphor were synthesized by solid-state reaction method. Photoluminescence excitation and emission spectra showed that the phosphors could be efficiently excited by near ultraviolet to blue light from 350 to 470nm to give bright red emission. There were four emission bands peaking at 591, 615, 655, and 700nm, due to the transition of the Eu3+ (5D0→7Fj (j=0, 1,2,3,4)), respectively. After using the 3.5% Li2CO3 as the flux, the sample's emission intensity increased obviously. White LED was obtained by combining blue LED chip (InGaN-based 460nm emitting) with Ca(La1−xEux)4Si3O13 and YAG:Ce3+. As the x has the value of 0.5, the InGaN-based Ca(La0.5Eu0.5)4Si3O13 WLED presented intense white emitting and good color rendering of over 89.

Abstract:Narrow‐band red‐emitting fluoride phosphors play a crucial role in lighting and backlight displays, whereas the stability issue is a major challenge. Here, highly stable K2SiF6:Mn4+ (KSFM) single crystal phosphors with tunable sizes (20–1000 µm) are grown by a facile saturated crystallization method. The small specific surface area together with the unique Mn4+‐rare interface layer in KSFM single crystals enables the simultaneous fulfillment of high external quantum efficiency, excellent moisture, improved thermal quenching, and dissipation for high‐power and laser‐driven lighting applications. As a prototype, a warm white laser diode device with a high luminous flux of 202.7 lm and correlated color temperature of 3277 K, as well as a color rendering index of 87.9 is presented. This work provides new insights into the development of highly efficient and stable materials for advanced lighting applications.

Abstract:In this study, a series of (KxNa1-x)(2)SiF6: Mn4+ red phosphors with systematic composition variations of alkali metals was synthesized via a low-temperature full-solution approach. Driven by composition variations, a sequence of continuous structural phase transformations, i.e., from trigonal to mixed, and then to orthorhombic, and eventually to a cubic phase, is evidently observed in this series of red phosphors. More excitingly, phonon-induced luminescence is promoted as the most efficient and dominant light emission mechanism in a cubic phosphor of K2SiF6: Mn4+ at room temperature. As a result, the overall emission intensity of cubic K2SiF6: Mn4+ is increased by more than fivefold with respect to that of trigonal Na2SiF6: Mn4+. High-resolution X-ray diffraction, electron paramagnetic resonance and micro-Raman scattering experiments consistently reveal a decisive relationship between fluorescence properties and crystalline structures.
Thermal Quenching Mechanism of Mn4+ in Na2SiF6, NaKSiF6, and K2SiF6 Phosphors: Insights from the First-Principles Analysis

Abstract:This study aims to identify the key factors governing the thermal quenching of Mn4+ ion luminescence in fluoride-based phosphor materials used as red emitters in modern-day phosphor-converted LED devices. Here, we employ first-principles calculations for Mn4+-doped Na2SiF6, NaKSiF6, and K2SiF6 hosts to explore how host properties and local coordination environments influence thermal quenching behavior. The ΔSCF method was used to model the geometric structures of the Mn4+4A2 (ground) and 2E, 4T2 (excited) states and the energies of the optical transitions between these states. Our results reveal that thermal quenching in Na2SiF6 and K2SiF6 phosphors occurs through thermally activated 2E → 4T2 → 4A2 crossover. In contrast, thermal quenching in NaKSiF6 is due to other nonradiative decay pathways. Investigations of the mechanical stability of these fluorides show that NaKSiF6 is mechanically unstable. We suggest that this property of the host limits the luminescence efficiency of the embedded Mn4+ ions. We also determined the reason for the difference in the intensity of the 2E → 4A2 emission transition (ZPL) in the systems. These findings advance our fundamental understanding of the thermal quenching mechanism of Mn4+ ion luminescence in fluorides, and the results can aid future discoveries of technologically useful phosphors through high-throughput design methodologies.

Abstract:In this article, we propose a facile method for synthesis of K2SiF6:Mn4+ phosphor and discuss its promising application in warm-white light emitting diodes (LED). The K2SiF6:Mn4+ was synthesized from SiO2 powders through redox reaction in HF/KMnO4 solution. The optical properties of LEDs containing different ratios of K2SiF6:Mn4+ phosphor and commercial Ce3+-doped garnets (YAG-40) yellow-green phosphor were studied. A warm-white LED, with color temperature of 3510K and color rendering index of 90.9 and efficacy of 81.56lm/W was demonstrated.
Highly Regular, Uniform K3ScF6:Mn4+ Phosphors: Facile Synthesis, Microstructures, Photoluminescence Properties, and Application in Light-Emitting Diode Devices

Abstract:A new generation of red phosphors of complex fluoride matrices activated with Mn4+ has gained a broad interest in getting high color quality and low color temperature of solid-state white light-emitting diodes (WLEDs). However, besides their instability toward moisture, the extremely irregular and nonuniform morphologies of these phosphors have limited their practical industry applications. In the present study, a novel type of K3ScF6:Mn4+ red phosphor with highly regular, uniform, and high color purity was obtained successfully through a facile coprecipitation route under mild conditions. The crystal structure was identified with aids of the powder X-ray diffraction, Rietveld refinement, and density functional theory calculations. The prototype crystallizes in the space group Fm3 m with a cubic structure, and the lattice parameters are fitted well to be a = b = c = 8.4859(8) Å and V = 611.074(2) Å3. The Mn4+ ions occupy Sc3+ sites and locate at the centers of the distorted ScF6 octahedrons. A wide band gap of approximately 6.15 eV can provide sufficient space to accommodate impurity energy levels. Unlike most other Mn4+ ion-activated fluoride phosphors, the as-prepared K3ScF6:Mn4+ phosphors demonstrate highly uniform and regular morphologies with shapes transforming from cube to octahedron with increasing Mn4+ ion concentration. Under blue light excitation, the as-prepared K3ScF6:Mn4+ sample exhibits intense sharp-line red fluorescence (the strongest peak located at 631 nm) with high color purity. An excellent recovery in luminescence upon heating and cooling processes implies high stability of K3ScF6:Mn4+. Furthermore, a warm WLED fabricated with blue GaN chips merged with the mixture of K3ScF6:Mn4+ and the well-known commercial YAG:Ce3+ yellow phosphors exhibits wonderful color quality with lower correlated color temperature (3250 K) and higher color-rendering index ( Ra = 86.4). These results suggest that the K3ScF6:Mn4+ phosphor possesses stupendous potentiality for practical applications.

Abstract:The KHF2:Mn4+ can be well dissolved in deionized water and decomposed to obtain stable [MnF6]2‐ and F−‐rich environments. The abundant F− ions are conducive to the reaction with (C2H5O)4Si to form [SiF6]2‐. Using the green water‐soluble material KHF2:Mn4+ as a precursor, a microwave‐assisted strategy is proposed for the rapid synthesis of nano‐micro‐sized K2SiF6:Mn4+ without HF. Micro‐light‐emitting diodes (MicroLED) are considered to be the next generation of ideal display devices, with chip size requirements of less than 50 μm. To meet its micron‐scale pixel size, submicron luminescent materials are needed. Mn4+ doped fluoride phosphor, K2SiF6:Mn4+(KSFM) as a red luminescent material with excellent narrow‐band emission sensitivity to human eyes, has great potential as a color conversion material for full‐color MicroLED. However, it is difficult to obtain small‐size KSFM efficiently by conventional synthesis methods. Here, a simple HF‐free strategy for the rapid batch synthesis of nano‐micro‐sized KSFM based on a microwave‐assisted method is reported. The synthesized KSFM shows uniform morphology, average particle size is less than 0.2 μm, and has 89.3% internal quantum efficiency under 455 nm excitation. It exhibits excellent thermal stability (97.4%@423 K of the integrated emission intensity at 298 K) and prominent moisture resistance (81.9% of its initial relative emission intensity after immersing in water for 30 min). By employing it as a red emitter, the authors fabricate high‐performance white LEDs with high luminous efficacy of 116.1 lm W−1 and wide color gamut of 130.4% NTSC. In addition, self‐luminous red‐emitting arrays with a pixel size of 20 × 40 μm are constructed by nanoimprinting as‐synthesized KSFM.

Mn4+-activated Sc-based Hexafluoride Red Phosphor K5Sc3F14: Synthesis, Luminescence, and Its Applications in Blue-Pump WLEDs

Abstract:Due to the advantages of low phonon energy, structural diversity, excellent thermal stability and optical properties, fluoride compounds have sparked considerable research attention. On this foundation, a novel red-emitting phosphor, K5Sc3F14:Mn4+ (abbreviated as KSF:Mn4+), was successfully designed and synthesized via a conventional co-precipitation process. The phosphor was comprehensively analyzed in terms of its phase, structure, morphology, elemental composition, and optical performance. Under blue light (473 nm) excitation, seven discernible emission peaks appear at 599, 609, 613, 622, 630, 634, and 647 nm, which can be attributed to the 2Eg to 4A2g transition of the Mn4+ ions. Furthermore, the optimal molar ratio of K5Sc3F14:K2MnF6 and crystal-field parameters (CFPs) are amply discussed. Ultimately, a warm WLED lamp with a high CRI (Ra = 87.5) and a low CCT (3289 K) was successfully created through the combination of a synthesized KSF:Mn4+ phosphor and a well-known YAG:Ce3+ phosphor, demonstrating that the developed phosphor is an appealing red component for high-performance warm white illumination.

Abstract:A series of SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) (0.005 ≤x≤ 0.05) phosphors were successfully synthesized through a pressureless, facile, and efficient solid state route. The crystal structure, band structure, and their photoluminescence and cathodoluminescence properties were investigated in detail. The phosphors exhibit rod shape morphology with a uniform Eu(2+) distribution. Under n-UV excitation the emission spectra shift from 477 to 497 nm with an increase of Eu(2+) concentration. The concentration quenching mechanism of Eu(2+) emission was dominated by the dipole-dipole interaction. The thermal stability is comparable to that of the commercial Ba2SiO4:Eu(2+) phosphor. The phosphor also exhibits high current saturation and high resistance under low voltage electron bombardment. All the results indicate that the SrSiAl2O3N2:Eu(2+) phosphors can be considered as candidates for application in both white LEDs and FEDs.

Abstract:Transition-metal ion activated solid-state phosphors are of particular interest for the development of LED-based white light sources. In addition to their relatively low cost, these luminescent materials show exceptionally high luminescence efficiency, especially at room temperature and above, due to the involvement and promotion of thermal phonons. In this article, we present a comprehensive investigation into a set of manganese ion doped fluoride phosphors (A(2)BF(6):Mn4+, A = K, Na, B = Si, Ge, Ti), including the synthesis procedures and various characterization, with the emphasis on optical spectroscopic characterization. All of the phosphors synthesized at a temperature of -16 degrees C using a chemical co-precipitation method exhibit intense red color emission at room temperature under the excitation of light, with a wide range of wavelengths from 450 nm to 325 nm. In most of the phosphors, phonon-assisted luminescence dominates the spectra, which is evidenced using Raman scattering measurements. X-ray diffraction data from the samples reveal that K2SiF6:Mn4+ crystallizes in a cubic phase, while the remaining crystals have hexagonal structures, but with different symmetries for K2TiF6:Mn4+ and Na2SiF6:Mn4+. More interestingly, well-resolved spectral splitting was observed in the major phonon-assisted luminescence signatures of both the K2SiF6:Mn4+ and K2TiF6:Mn4+ samples, indicating the occurrence of complicated but fascinating phonon-assisted transition processes in the phosphors.

Abstract:A series of nitride solid solutions (Ca1-x,Sr-x)(16)Si17N34:0.03Eu(2+) were successfully synthesized through the conventional solid-state method. The electronic crystal structure and photoluminescence characteristics were studied in detail. The excitation in the near-ultraviolet and blue regions of the samples shows a broad band in the 250-550 nm range, which can match well with the n-UV and blue lighting-emitting diode chips. Partial substitution of Ca2+ by Sr2+ results in a redshift emission, and the impacts of Sr content on the luminescence were researched in detail. Under 410 nm excitation, the phosphor exhibited tunable red emission from 616 to 653 nm by changing the concentration of Sr2+. Based on the crystal data, the emission can be fitted into three distinguished Gaussian components, which are attributed to the different Eu2+ luminescence centers occupied in three disparate Ca2+ (Sr2+) lattice sites. The temperature quenching property of the phosphor was also investigated, and the good thermal stability of the phosphors was analyzed through the activation energy for thermal quenching. And the obtained CCT values from 2642 to 2817 K are suitable for a warm white light region. All the results indicated that the phosphors have possible application in the warm white light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:To improve absorption efficiency (AE) and subsequently improve external quantum efficiency (EQE) remains one of the significant challenges for Mn4+-doped red-emitting fluoride phosphors. In this study, we propose to use Mn4+ as a part of matrix to enhance the AE of fluoride phosphors. Red-emission phosphors Cs2MnF6, Cs2MnF6:Sc3+, and Cs2MnF6:Si4+ were synthesized successfully by a coprecipitation method. The Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction reveals that this red phosphor exhibits a cubic structure in Fm3̅m space group. Owing to Mn4+ being a part of matrix, this kind of red phosphor possesses an extremely high AE, which can be promoted to 88%. The doping of Sc3+ and Si4+ ions into Cs2MnF6 can effectively increase the luminescence intensity to 253 and 232%, respectively, relative to that of Cs2MnF6. The relative emission intensity of Cs2MnF6:5%Si4+ red phosphor preserves about 115% when temperature rises to 175 °C. By employing Cs2MnF6:5%Si4+ as a red-emitting component, high-performance LED-1 with Ra = 86.2, R9 = 82.1 and CCT = 3297 K, and LED-2 with an ultrawide color gamut (NTSC value of 122.3% and rec. 2020 value of 91.3%) are obtained. This work may provide a new idea to explore a new type of fluoride phosphor with high EQE for high-performance white-light-emitting diodes.

Abstract:Eu2+ doped Ca2Si5N8 phosphors were successfully prepared by gas-pressed sintering. The red-shift of the emission band from 608 nm to the longer wavelength 622 nm of the Ca2Si5N8:Eu2+ phosphor under blue excitation has been achieved, and a large enhancement in the emission intensity has been obtained by using BaF2. XRD data revealed that the lattice of Ca2Si5N8:Eu2+ was expanded with Ba2+ ion doping. XPS results suggested that there were more Eu2+ ions incorporated into the lattice of Ba2+ doped samples than those of the undoped samples. The doping effect of Ba2+ ions has been discussed in detail.

Abstract:K2SiF6:Mn4+ (KSF:Mn4+), as an efficient red-emitting phosphor, has a promising application in WLEDs (white light-emitting diodes). However, poor moisture resistance performance still hinders its deeper commercialization. Here, KSF:Mn4+@ CaF2 with high water resistance and luminescent thermal stability has been prepared though H2O2-free hydrothermal method and surface coating process. Both KSF:Mn4+ and KSF:Mn4+@CaF2 all have high luminescent thermal stability, due to negative thermal quenching (NTQ) effect. Mechanism of the NTQ has been discussed and suggested as thermal-light energy conversion mechanism. Compared with KSF:Mn4+, water resistance of KSF:Mn4+@CaF2 is greatly improved by coating of CaF2, because the outer shell of CaF2 can effectively prevent the [MnF6]2- group on the surface of the phosphor from being hydrolyzed into MnO2. The results of water resistance test shows that after immersing in water for 360 min (6 h), luminescent intensity of the uncoated product drops to 41.68% of the initial one, while that of the coated product remains to have 88.24% of its initial one. Warm white light with good luminescent performances (CCT = 3956 K and Ra = 89.3) is got from prototype WLEDs assembled by using the optimal coated sample. The results suggest that the optimal coated sample has potential application in blue-based warm WLEDs.

Abstract:The cation exchange method has been demonstrated to be efficient in doping Mn4+ ions into various fluorides to synthesize the red‐emitting LED phosphors. This paper, however, reports the challenge in using this method to dope Mn4+ into the Na2SiF6 single crystals, to prepare the fluoride phosphor in single‐crystal form, a state‐of‐the‐art study in the white LED lighting field. The millimeter‐sized Na2SiF6 single crystals with a uniform columnar morphology (2~3 mm in length) were successfully grown in solution by a slow cooling process after optimizing the precursors. Then, the crystals were soaked in the HF solution dissolved with K2MnF6 to implement Mn4+‐doping via the cation exchange process. Evaluation of the Mn4+‐doping behavior reveals that the Mn4+ ↔ Si4+ cation exchange is less efficient in the case of single crystal host compared with the polycrystalline powdery ones, and by‐reactions also occur which generates new phases. The Na2SiF6 single crystals doped with Mn4+ exhibit a series of discrete sharp peaks with intense zero phonon line emission at 617 nm under 450 nm blue irradiation. This study may trigger the exploration of new single crystal fluoride phosphor.

Abstract:The red‐light single crystals Rb2Si1−xMnxF6 with ultrahigh optimal Mn4+ content of 32.4 mol% exhibit a high external quantum efficiency of 80.2%. The broad excitation band ensures efficient excitation by both blue and violet‐light. The high‐efficacy full‐spectrum white light‐emitting diodes and white‐light laser diodes are fabricated by RSMF crystals. Owing to the avoidance of device reabsorption and improvement in the color rendering index (CRI), Mn4+‐activated fluorides have potential applications in full‐spectrum lighting. However, it is still challenging to improve the external quantum efficiency (EQE) and adapt it to the excitation of violet‐light chips used for increasing the CRI and reducing the blue‐light hazard. Here, red‐light single crystals Rb2Si1−xMnxF6 (RSMF) with an ultrahigh optimal Mn4+ content of 32.4 mol% are obtained through structural and morphological design. Breaking through the limitation of low quenching concentration (<10 mol%) of Mn4+‐activated fluorides, the as‐grown heavy Mn4+‐doped RSMF crystal not only exhibits a record EQE of 80.2% but also has a broad excitation band of full width at half maxima = 86 nm, which can be efficiently excited by both blue (460 nm) and violet (437 nm) light. The white light‐emitting diodes fabricated by violet/blue dual‐chips, commercial green phosphor, and the optimized RSMF crystal can realize a high luminous efficacy of 161.8 lm W−1 and high CRI of Ra = 95.5. Additionally, laser diode devices with high luminous flux of 198.2 lm are also presented. This study provides new insights into heavy Mn4+‐doped materials and promotes the application of full‐spectrum lighting.

Abstract:Mn4+ activated K2SiF6 red phosphors have attracted widespread attention, while the poor moisture resistance restrains their further applications. In order to optimize the luminescence intensity of the K2SiF6:Mn4+ red phosphors immersed in water, we synthesized K2SiF6:Mn4+, Li + red phosphors with LiF as lithium source. The luminous intensity of K2SiF6:Mn4+, Li+ phosphor is approximately 133% of K2SiF6:Mn4+ red phosphors. By coating BaSO4 layer on the surface of K2SiF6:Mn4+, Li+ samples, the luminous intensity of K2SiF6:Mn4+, Li+@BaSO4 red phosphor maintains 83% of the initial intensity after soaking in water for 6 h. In addition, the K2SiF6:Mn4+, Li+@0.8 BaSO4 red phosphor has higher luminous intensity at 150 °C. Finally, by combining with InGaN blue chip and yellow phosphor (YAG:Ce3+) to fabricate warm white LED devices, the warm white LED device based on K2SiF6:Mn4+, Li+@0.8 BaSO4 red phosphor has excellent performance (CCT = 3558 K, CRI = 91.4).
