Abstract:Protein exerts a critical influence on the degradation behavior of absorbable magnesium (Mg)-based implants. However, the interaction mechanism between protein and a micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coating on Mg alloys remains unclear. Hereby, a MAO coating was fabricated on AZ31 Mg alloy. And its degradation behavior in phosphate buffer saline (PBS) containing bovine serum albumin (BSA) was investigated and compared with that of the uncoated alloy. Surface morphologies and chemical compositions were studied using Field-emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectrophotometer (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The degradation behavior of the bare Mg alloy and its MAO coating was studied through electrochemical and hydrogen evolution tests. Cytotoxicity assay was applied to evaluate the biocompatibility of Mg alloy substrate and MAO coating. Results indicated that the presence of BSA decreased the degradation rate of Mg alloy substrate because BSA (RCH(NH2)COO‾) molecules combined with Mg2+ ions to form (RCH(NH2)COO)2Mg and thus inhibited the dissolution of Mg(OH)2 by impeding the attack of Cl‾ ions. In the case of MAO coated Mg alloy, the adsorption of BSA on MAO coating and the formation of (RCH(NH2)COO)2Mg exhibited a synergistic effect and enhanced the corrosion resistance of the coated alloy significantly. Furthermore, cell bioactive assay suggested that the MAO coating had good viability for MG63 cells due to its high surface area.

Abstract:The ability of C1 to bind to the Fc5mu-fragment of a monoclonal IgM was determined by means of a haemolytic C1-inhibition assay. Fc5mu fragments were produced by trypsin digestion at five different temperatures ranging from 54-62 degrees (2 degrees increments) and were purified by immunoadsorption through a column of monospecific anti-Fabmu and by molecular exclusion chromatography. Analytical ultracentrifugation showed the final preparations to be free of aggregates. A plot of mug Fc5mu required to inhibit 50% of available C1 versus temperatures of production of the fragment yielded a curve with a minimum at 58-60 degrees. Upon mild reduction and alkylation of these Fc5mu fragments their C1-fixing capacity became approximately the same irrespective of temperature of production. Fc5mu was also prepared at 25 degrees in the presence of 5 M urea, purified by immunoadsorption as before and aliquots then exposed to temperatures ranging from 40-70 degrees (5 degrees increments) for 15 min. After aggregates had been removed by chromatography a similar minimum in C1-fixation was again observed at 60 degrees. Reduction and alkylation once more abolished these differences. Fc5mu and its reduced and alkylated subunits, produced at 60 degrees and then exposed to various concentrations of urea (0-7 M) for 24 hd did not yield a minimum in C1 fixation. Reduced and alkylated Fcmu incubated at various temperatures (40-70 degrees) also did not fix C1 differentially. Examination in the near and far u.v. region of the circular dichroism spectra of different Fc5mu preparations showed a gradual loss of structure associated with restricted aromatic chromophores and secondary (beta) structure with increased temperature. Urea denaturation had a more pronounced and irreversible effect on Fc5 mu conformation. These changes could not be correlated with the CU-fixation patterns observed. It would therefore appear that elevated temperatures induce a static change in the pentameric FC-part of IgM which in turn directly influences or modulates the availability of the C1-binding site. The importance of disulphide bonds in maintaining these temperature-induced changes in Fc5mu was also indicated.

Abstract:The electrochemical behavior of potential orthopedic Mg-Ca, AZ31 and AZ91 alloys was studied in Hank's solution, Dulbecco's Modified Eagle's Medium (DMEM) and serum-containing medium (DMEM adding 10% fetal bovine serum (DMEM+FBS)) over a 7 day immersion period. The biocorrosion of the above three alloys for various immersion time intervals was investigated by linear polarization and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). After 7 day immersion, potentiodynamic polarization tests were carried out and the surface morphologies of experimental samples were examined by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation complemented by energy-disperse spectrometer (EDS) analysis. It was shown that the corrosion of magnesium alloys was influenced by the composition of the solution. The results indicated that chloride ion could reduce the corrosion resistance and the hydrocarbonate ions could induce rapid surface passivation. The adsorbed amino acid on the experimental magnesium alloys' surface increased their polarization resistance and reduced current densities. The influence of the serum protein on corrosion was found to be associated with the magnesium alloy compositions. A Mg-Ca alloy exhibited an increased corrosion rate in the presence of serum protein. An AZ31 alloy showed an increased corrosion rate in DMEM+FBS in the initial 3 day immersion and the corrosion rate decreased thereafter. An AZ91 alloy, with high Al content, showed a reduced corrosion rate with the addition of FBS into DMEM.

Abstract:Biodegradation behavior and mechanism of AZ31 and WE43 magnesium alloys have been studied in the simulated body fluid (SBF). The results of weight loss tests indicate that corrosion rates of AZ31 alloy are lower than that of WE43 alloy. The corrosion resistance of magnesium alloys has a direct relationship with the alloying elements and microstructure. Corrosion processes of these two alloys are analyzed by electrochemical techniques. Over time corrosion potentials of AZ31 alloy and WE43 alloy both positively shift and corrosion rates decrease. Compared with WE43 alloy, corrosion current densities of AZ31 alloy are lower and the corrosion interface is relatively neat with a few shallow and narrow pits. Ascribed to serious local corrosion, the interface between corrosion products and matrix of WE43 alloy is sinuate with MgO4, MgCl2 and Y2O3 as part component of corrosion products.

Abstract:Biodegradable magnesium (Mg)-based alloys emerge as potential intracorporeal implants for clinical application in bone tissue, the cardiovascular and the nervous systems. The surfaces of control (non-sterilized) and sterilized (180 °C 1 h) Mg ZX10 alloy were studied. The alloy evolution in SBF (simulated saline solution) and in DMEM (Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium) with fetal calf serum (FCS) was investigated using: Raman spectroscopy , FTIR-ATR, electrochemical assays and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The Mg ZX10 microstructure analysis revealed an average grain size of 23.4 ± 11.02 and 31.6 ± 13.07 μm, considering the minor and major axis, respectively. In addition, the Mg ZX10 microstructure exhibited a homogeneous grain distribution. The contact angle formed between the water and the surface of control Mg ZX10 and sterilized were 32.24° ± 1.53 and 46.76° ± 0.83, respectively. Consequently, both groups of samples exhibited hydrophilic surfaces. Furthermore, the free surface energy of control Mg ZX10 was 63.23 ± 0.72 mN/m and sterilized Mg ZX10 was 52.31 mN/m ± 1.25, those energy values were in agreement with previous reports. Upon immersion in SBF, Raman spectroscopy detected the presence of magnesium oxides-hydroxides, phosphates and carbonates compounds in both groups of samples without significant differences. FTIR spectra of the sterilized alloys, after immersion in DMEM + FCS, showed the presence of amide and carbon-carbon bonds, magnesium-oxides, as well as phosphates and carbonates groups. These findings suggested the deposition of organic and inorganic compounds on the alloy surface. Electrochemical assays carried out in SBF demonstrated a slight reduction in the degradation of the sterilized alloy compared to control Mg ZX10. Moreover, a substantial decrease in the corrosion behavior of the sterilized alloy immersed in DMEM + FCS with respect to the same alloy immersed in SBF was observed. SEM images showed that the alloy, previously immersed in SBF, exhibited degradation cracks. Contrary, the sterilized alloy surface immersed in DMEM + FCS was more homogenous with deposits of structures similar to hybrid nanoflowers . Based on these results, this sterilization process does not alter the chemistry of Mg ZX10 alloy surface and, even, its application exhibits an advantage since the high corrosion rate of Mg in physiological media. Furthermore, the organic-inorganic structures adsorbed, after alloy immersion in DMEM + FCS, could decrease corrosion behavior.

Abstract:The microstructure, mechanical property, electrochemical behavior and biocompatibility of magnesium alloy (BioDe MSM™) were studied in the present work. The experimental results demonstrated that grain refining induced by extrusion improves the alloy strength significantly from 162 MPa for the as-cast alloy to 241 MPa for the as-extruded one. The anticorrosion properties of the as-extruded alloy also increased. Furthermore, the hemolysis ratio was decreased from 4.7% for the as-cast alloy to 2.9% for the as-extruded one, both below 5%. BioDe MSM™ alloy shows good biocompatibility after being implanted into the dorsal muscle and the femoral shaft of the New Zealand rabbit, respectively, and there are no abnormalities after short-term implantation. In vivo observation indicated that the corrosion rate of this alloy varies with different implantation positions, with higher degradation rate in the femur than in the muscle.

Abstract:The performance of biodegradable magnesium alloy requires special attention to rapid degradation and poor biocompatibility, which can cause the implant to fail. Here, a sodium montmorillonite (MMT)/bovine serum albumin (BSA) composite coating was prepared upon magnesium alloy AZ31 via hydrothermal synthesis, followed by dip coating. We evaluated the surface characterization and corrosion behavior in vitro, and the biocompatibility in vitro and in vivo. Biodegradation progress of the MMT-BSA coated Mg pieces was examined through hydrogen evolution, immersion tests, and electrochemical measurements in Hank’s solution. In vitro biocompatibility studies were evaluated via hemolysis tests, dynamic cruor time tests, platelet adhesion, MTT testing and live-dead stain of osteoblast cells (MC3T3-E1). It was found that the MMT-BSA coating had good corrosion resistance and a marked improvement in biocompatibility in comparison to bare Mg alloy AZ31. in vivo studies were carried out in rat model and the degradation was characterized by computed tomography scans. Results revealed that the MMT-BSA coated Mg alloy AZ31 implants maintained their structural integrity and slight degradation after 120 d of post-implantation. A 100% survival rate for the rats was observed with no obvious toxic damages on the organs and tissues. Additionally, we proposed a sound coating formation mechanism. Considering the good corrosion protection and biocompatibility, the MMT-BSA coated Mg alloy AZ31 is a promising candidate material for biomedical implants.

Abstract:Currently, permanent vascular stents are fabricated using titanium and stainless steel implants that are nondegradable and offer high stability, but they have certain disadvantages. For example, the prolonged exposition of aggressive ions in the physiological media and the existence of defects in the oxide film create conditions for corrosion to occur, thus triggering unwanted biological events and compromising the mechanical integrity of the implants. Moreover, when the implant does not need to be permanent, there is the need to submit the patient for a second surgery for implant removal. As a solution for nonpermanent implants, biodegradable magnesium alloys have been deemed a promising substitute, for example, for cardiovascular-related applications and the construction of orthopedic devices. A biodegradable magnesium alloy (Mg-2.5Zn) reinforced by zinc and eggshell was employed in this study as an environment-conscious magnesium (eco) composite (Mg-2.5Zn-xES). Disintegrated melt deposition (DMD) was used to fabricate the composite. Experimental studies were conducted to investigate the biodegradation performance of Mg-Zn alloys containing 3 and 7 wt % eggshell (ES) in simulated body fluid (SBF) at 37 °C. Different corrosion techniques were used to study the corrosion behavior of the Mg-2.5Zn-xES composites, including weight loss measurements, hydrogen evolution, potentiodynamic polarization, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), and scanning vibrating electrode technique (SVET). Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were employed to scrutinize the corroded surfaces' morphology and composition. The outcomes indicated that Mg-2.5Zn-3ES possesses the lowest degradation activity.
Surface characterization and cytotoxicity response of biodegradable magnesium alloys

Abstract:Magnesium alloys have raised an immense amount of interest to many researchers because of their evolution as a new kind of third generation materials. Due to their biocompatibility, density, and mechanical properties, magnesium alloys are frequently reported as prospective biodegradable implant materials. Moreover, magnesium alloys experience a natural phenomenon to biodegrade in aqueous solutions due to its corrosion activity, which is excellent for orthopedic and cardiovascular applications. However, a major concern with such alloys is fast and non-uniform corrosion degradation. Controlling the degradation rate in the physiological environment determines the success of biodegradable implants. In this investigation, three different grades of magnesium alloys: AZ31B, AZ91E and ZK60A were studied for their corrosion resistance and biocompatibility. Scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive spectroscopy, atomic force microscopy and contact angle meter are used to study surface morphology, chemistry, roughness and wettability, respectively. Additionally, the cytotoxicity of the leached metal ions was evaluated by using a tetrazolium based bio-assay, MTS.
In Vitro Degradation Performance and Biological Response of a Mg–Zn–Zr Alloy

Abstract:The feasibility of a Mg-Zn-Zr alloy for biomedical applications was studied through microstructure characterization, corrosion tests in different biological media, and cell proliferation, differentiation and adhesion tests. Corrosion tests showed that the ZK60 alloy in the as-extruded state with finer grain sizes exhibited slower corrosion rates than the same alloy in the as-cast state. The tests in different biological fluids showed that the corrosion rates of the as-cast and as-extruded ZK60 alloy in DMEM + FBS were the highest, while those in Hank's solution were the lowest. The corrosion rate of the as-extruded ZK60 alloy was similar to the corrosion rates of other commercial magnesium alloys, namely the die-cast AZ910, die-cast AM50, extruded AZ31 and extruded WE43 alloys. The results obtained from the indirect cytotoxicity evaluation showed that the 100% concentrated cast and extruded ZK60 alloy extracts resulted in significantly reduced cell numbers and total protein amounts, as compared to the negative control. The cell number and total protein amount increased with the gradual dilution of the extracts, but the protein normalized ALP activity showed an opposite trend. For the direct assay, L-929 and MG63 cells exhibited good adhesion with spread pseudopod on the surface of extruded ZK60 alloy samples after 24 h culture. In short, the as-extruded ZK60 alloy could be a good candidate material for biodegradable implants. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Two industrial Mg alloys ZQ71 and ZQ63 were investigated. Optical microscopy was used to put in evidence microstructure. The conclusions are correlated with obtained results after scanning electron microscopy investigations coupled with energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The evaluation of the hydrogen released rate was analyzed in laboratory made simulated body fluid (SBF) and Hanks' solution at 37°C for 10 days. Different degradation rates are obtained, and it can be concluded that they depend on chemical composition of the alloys and on immersion time of the samples in different physiological solutions.
Protein conformation and electric attraction adsorption mechanisms on anodized magnesium alloy by molecular dynamics simulations

Abstract:Protein adsorption preferentially occurs and significantly affects the physicochemical reactions once the biodegradable magnesium alloys as bone replacements have been implanted. To date, interactions mechanisms between Mg implants and proteins remain unclear at a molecular level. Thereby, a combination of molecular dynamic (MD) simulations and experimental exploration is used to investigate the adsorption behavior and conformational change of bovine serum albumin (BSA), a representative protein of blood plasma, upon the surface of micro-arc oxidation (MAO) coated Mg alloy AZ31. The influences of absorbed proteins on the cytocompatibility of MAO coating are evaluated by virtue of cytotoxicity assay. Results indicate that the negatively charged O atoms (BSA) exhibit strong interaction with Mg2+ ions of Mg(OH)2, revealing that BSA molecules are ionically adsorbed on the AZ31 surface. Interestingly, MD simulation reveals that MAO coating demonstrates superior ability to capture BSA molecules during the process of adsorption owing to strong electric attraction between the negatively charged O atoms in BSA molecules with Mg atoms of MgO in MAO coating. Moreover, the α-helix part of absorbed BSA molecules on AZ31 substrate and MAO coating markedly decreases with an increase in β-sheet, β-turn and unordered contents, which is attributed to the reduction in the number of hydrogen bonds in BSA molecules. Furthermore, the adsorbed BSA molecules improve the cytocompatibility of MAO coating since the positively charged -NH3+ group and β-sheet content of absorbed BSA molecules mediate the cell adhesion by interacting with the negatively charged cell membrane.

In Vitro Monitoring of Magnesium-Based Implants Degradation by Surface Analysis and Optical Spectroscopy

Abstract:Magnesium (Mg)-based degradable alloys have attracted substantial attention for tissue engineering applications due to their biodegradability and potential for avoiding secondary removal surgeries. However, insufficient data in the existing literature regarding Mg's corrosion and gas formation after implantation have delayed its wide clinical application. Since the surface properties of degradable materials constantly change after contact with body fluid, monitoring the behaviour of Mg in phantoms or buffer solutions could provide some information about its physicochemical surface changes over time. Through surface analysis and spectroscopic analysis, we aimed to investigate the structural and functional properties of degradable disks. Since bubble formation may lead to inflammation and change pH, monitoring components related to acidosis near the cells is essential. To study the bubble formation in cell culture media, we used a newly developed Mg alloy (based on Mg, zinc, and calcium), pure Mg, and commercially available grade 2 Titanium (Ti) disks in Dulbecco's Modified Eagle Medium (DMEM) solution to observe their behaviour over ten days of immersion. Using surface analysis and the information from near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), we concluded on the conditions associated with the medical risks of Mg alloy disintegration. NIRS is used to investigate the degradation behaviour of Mg-based disks in the cell culture media, which is correlated with the surface analysis where possible.
Magnesium degradation influenced by buffering salts in concentrations typical of in vitro and in vivo models

Abstract:Magnesium and its alloys have considerable potential for orthopedic applications. During the degradation process the interface between material and tissue is continuously changing. Moreover, too fast or uncontrolled degradation is detrimental for the outcome in vivo. Therefore in vitro setups utilizing physiological conditions are promising for the material/degradation analysis prior to animal experiments. The aim of this study is to elucidate the influence of inorganic salts contributing to the blood buffering capacity on degradation. Extruded pure magnesium samples were immersed under cell culture conditions for 3 and 10 days. Hank's balanced salt solution without calcium and magnesium (HBSS) plus 10% of fetal bovine serum (FBS) was used as the basic immersion medium. Additionally, different inorganic salts were added with respect to concentration in Dulbecco's modified Eagle's medium (DMEM, in vitro model) and human plasma (in vivo model) to form 12 different immersion media. Influences on the surrounding environment were observed by measuring pH and osmolality. The degradation interface was analyzed by electron-induced X-ray emission (EIXE) spectroscopy, including chemical-element mappings and electron microprobe analysis, as well as Fourier transform infrared reflection micro-spectroscopy (FTIR).

Abstract:Once the magnesium alloy was implanted in the body, it was immediately covered with plasma proteins. The coated alloy surface promoted the adsorption and growth of osteoblasts. Herein, in vitro biological reactions of the ZK60 and AZ31 magnesium alloys were analyzed with and without plasma proteins incubation. The plasma proteins adsorbed on the magnesium alloy were characterized using mass spectrometry (MS). The MS results show that proteins related to bone cells such as fibrinogen, vitronectin, fibronectin, and prothrombin are prone to adsorbed on the surface of the alloys than other proteins. These proteins restrain the degradation of Mg alloys and promote the adsorption and growth of bone cells, which demonstrated by the immersion tests and biocompatibility assays. Furthermore, molecular dynamics simulations were used to analyze the details of the adsorptions of fibrinogen, fibronectin, and prothrombin on ZK60 and AZ31at atomic level. It is revealed that the type of residues adsorbed on the surface of the material has an important effect on protein adsorption.
Degradation protection and enhanced biocompatibility of Mg alloys pretreated with plasma proteins

Abstract:After implantation of the Mg alloy in the human body, the adsorption of plasma protein on surface will cause a series of cell reactions and affect the degradation of Mg alloys. Herein, in vitro biological reactions of the ZK60 and AZ31 Mg alloys are analyzed in plasma protein environment. Combined with mass spectrometry analysis of the type of adsorbed proteins, it is shown that proteins such as fibrinogen, vitronectin, fibronectin, and prothrombin are prone to get adsorbed on the surface of the alloys than other proteins, leading to the promotion of MG63 cell adhesion and proliferation. The effect of selected proteins (fibrinogen, fibronectin, and prothrombin) on degradation of ZK60 and AZ31 Mg alloys is investigated using immersion tests. The degradation of AZ31 Mg alloy is significantly restrained with the presence of proteins. This is due to the protein adsorption effect on the sample surface. The molecular dynamics simulation results indicate that both fibrinogen and fibronectin tend to adsorb onto the AZ31 rather than ZK60, forming a stable protein layer on the AZ31 Mg alloy retarding the degradation of the samples. As to ZK60 alloy, the addition of protein inhibits the degradation in the short term, however, the degradation increases after a long time of immersion. This phenomenon is particularly pronounced in fibronectin solution.

Abstract:There is an increasing interest in biodegradable materials, such as magnesium, for orthopedic implants. This is driven by their potential to address challenges like stress shielding and the need for secondary removal surgery. In this study, biodegradable magnesium alloys were produced using the Vacuum Induction Casting technique. The impact of micro-alloying Zn and Ca in Mg-xZn-0.2Ca (x= 0.1, 0.2, 0.3, and 0.4 wt%) alloys on corrosion resistance, cytocompatibility, and early-stage inflammatory response was investigated. XRD and SEM-EDS analysis confirmed the presence of Ca2Mg6Zn3 secondary phases in all alloys. The Mg-0.3Zn-0.2Ca alloy exhibited the lowest corrosion rate and an elastic modulus of 33.7 GPa, resembling that of natural bone. Electrochemical measurements indicated a correlation between grain size and secondary phase volume fraction in explaining corrosion behaviour. In vitro degradation in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 21 days showed hydroxyapatite formation on alloy surfaces, aligning with electrochemical studies. In vitro cytotoxicity tests demonstrated the cytocompatibility of all alloys, with Mg-0.3Zn-0.2Ca having the highest cell viability over a 6-day cell culture. Investigation into the inflammatory response with RAW-Blue macrophages revealed the anti-inflammatory properties of Mg-0.3Zn-0.2Ca alloys. Micro-alloying with 0.3 wt% Zn and 0.2 wt% Ca enhanced mechanical properties, corrosion resistance, cytocompatibility, and immunomodulatory properties. This positions the Mg-0.3Zn-0.2Ca alloy as a promising biodegradable implant for bone fixation applications.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys have shown prospective applications as a new biodegradable metal within bone. To garantee the longterm biocompatibility, a Mg-Zn-Ca alloy, composing of essential elements for human, was prepared and its feasibility for orthopedic applications was investigated. The in vitro and in vivo corrosion of Mg-Zn-Ca alloy as well as the biocompatibility were studied. The in vitro corrosion tests in five kinds of physiological solutions showed that the corrosion rates and corrosion morphologies of the alloy were strongly influenced by the solution used. The addition of serum in Hank’s and MEM significantly slowed down the corrosion rate and improved the corrosion uniformity of the alloy. The corrosion rate decreased with increasing serum concentration. The alloy showed the slowest corrosion rate as well as homogeneous corrosion morphology in MEM+10%FBS. Both the indirect and direct cell experiments indicated good cytocompatibility of the extruded Mg-Zn-Ca alloy. In vivo , we observed a gradual degradation process from the surface of extruded Mg-Zn-Ca alloy and only 40% in volume of implant was left after 4 weeks implantation in medullary cavities of mice. The micro-CT and histological analyses revealed its good biocompatibility with peri-implant new bone formation and increasing cortical bone thickness with increasing implantation period. This study showed that the extruded Mg-Zn-Ca alloy provided sufficient biocompatibility for orthopedic application, though the in vivo corrosion rate should be further reduced for clinical use.

Abstract:Magnesium alloys are potential biodegradable materials and have received increasing attention due to their outstanding biological performance and mechanical properties. However, rapid degradation in the physiological environment and potential toxicity limit clinical applications. Recently, special magnesium–calcium (Mg–Ca) and magnesium–strontium (Mg–Sr) alloys with biocompatible chemical compositions have been reported, but the rapid degradation still does not meet clinical requirements. In order to improve the corrosion resistance, a rough, hydrophobic and ZrO2-containing surface film is fabricated on Mg–Ca and Mg–Sr alloys by dual zirconium and oxygen ion implantation. Weight loss measurements and electrochemical corrosion tests show that the corrosion rate of the Mg–Ca and Mg–Sr alloys is reduced appreciably after surface treatment. A systematic investigation of the in vitro cellular response and antibacterial capability of the modified binary magnesium alloys is performed. The amounts of adherent bacteria on the Zr–O-implanted and Zr-implanted samples diminish remarkably compared to the unimplanted control. In addition, significantly enhanced cell adhesion and proliferation are observed from the Zr–O-implanted sample. The results suggest that dual zirconium and oxygen ion implantation, which effectively enhances the corrosion resistance, in vitro biocompatibility and antimicrobial properties of Mg–Ca and Mg–Sr alloys, provides a simple and practical means to expedite clinical acceptance of biodegradable magnesium alloys.
