Abstract:Fouling control strategies play a crucial role in membrane distillation (MD) process, primarily due to the significant limitation of fouling during the scaling-up process. The utilization of microbubbles (MBs) aeration has exhibited promising potential in mitigating membrane fouling when treating high salinity wastewater. Aeration can introduce gas-liquid two-phase flow on the membrane surface, thereby increasing the membrane surface shear force. The mechanism of aeration technology for controlling fouling includes the following points: introduction of gas-liquid two-phase flow; physical substitution of concentration polarization layer; pressure pulses caused by bubbles flowing through the membrane surface and increasement of the cross flow velocity. This research aims to optimizing the effect of air MBs with different concentrations and sizes introduced in the feed side on membrane fouling control, we creatively used the method of releasing pressure gradiently to achieve size regulation of MBs within a certain range for the first time, firstly regulated the generation of MBs by manipulating gas flow rate and release pressure. Under the optimal condition of 40 mL/min and 0.6 MPa, it will yield concentration of 1.58 × 10 4 /mL and D50 Sauter size of 64.69 μm MBs with pure water permeance flux of 12.32 kg/(m 2 ·h). It was observed that higher gas flow rates primarily increased MBs concentration, while lower pressures predominantly reduced MBs size through the method of inline imaging. Experimental results indicated that introduction of MBs can slightly improve the temperature polarization coefficient and mass transfer coefficient under different operating modes. Consequently, further investigations focused on the influence of MBs characteristics on different fouling control. All conditions reach 99 % rejection for inorganic salt and HA. This study provided empirical evidence that higher concentration and larger size of MBs intensify the gas-liquid two-phase flow disruption and exhibit a better shear effect on scaling phenomena, which yield advantageous outcomes in terms of augmenting permeance flux and water vapor production, with permeance flux increased from 40.12 % to 55.42 % for inorganic fouling and increased from 68.35 % to 80.15 % for inorganic and HA fouling. These results were confirmed via membrane surface using scanning electron microscopy and energy dispersive spectroscopy. In summary, this research aided in identifying appropriate operating conditions for mitigating inorganic and composite scaling by implementing air-infused MBs in direct contact membrane distillation (DCMD), which provides scientific and technical guidance for controlling fouling in MD in practical applications.

Abstract:Membrane reactors with efficient antifouling and low maintenance are desirable for distributed membrane water treatment. In this study, a novel membrane separation reactor with an Al anode and a conductive membrane as the cathode was built to develop a chemical-free method for mitigating membrane fouling via electrocoagulation coupled with the electrokinetic effect. The electrostatic repulsion between humic acid (HA) and the membrane cathode reduced the adhesion of HA foulants on the membrane, thereby contributing to antifouling in the initial stage. Electrocoagulation and polarization induced by the electric field enlarged the HA-Al flocs, which prevented membrane pore blocking and facilitated the formation of a porous cake layer, thereby leading to a high water flux of the electrocoagulation membrane cathode reactor (ECMCR) in the stable stage. The bubbles from hydrogen evolution on the membrane cathode scoured the HA foulants and washed out the dense cake layer, thereby playing an important role in membrane fouling mitigation. Compared with membrane filtration, the membrane cathode reactor, membrane anode reactor, and HA removal of the ECMCR increased by 9.6, 8.3, and 2.8 times, respectively, whereas the transmembrane pressure decreased by 84.6%, 21.5%, and 63.0%, respectively. The synergy of electrocoagulation and the electrokinetic effect provides the ECMCR with a feasible method of antifouling and improved effluent quality with low maintenance.

The Use of a Self-Generated Current in a Coupled MFC-AnMBR System to Alleviate Membrane Fouling

Abstract:In this study, we developed a coupled microbial fuel cell-anaerobic membrane bioreactor (MFC-AnMBR) system to degrade and remove membrane foulants, rather than preventing foulants from reaching the membrane surface through electrostatic repulsion. The MFC-AnMBR system consists of a conductive membrane as the MFC anode and an MBR filter membrane. The operating time of an experimental group with a 0.38-mA current was extended to 89 days longer than that of a control group (no cleaning during the operating period). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy indicated that the main membrane foulants were polysaccharides, proteins, and lipids. The concentrations of polysaccharides and proteins were significantly lower in the experimental group than in the control group. In confocal laser scanning microscopy, membrane surface proteins, a-polysaccharides, and beta-polysaccharides decreased in the experimental group by 45.34%, 57.19%, and 26.46% compared to the control group. Three-dimensional excitation-emission matrix fluorescence spectroscopy and molecular weight (MW) analysis revealed that foulants deposited on the anode film surface were degraded into substances with low MW more effectively in the experimental group than in the control group. Two-dimensional heterogeneous correlation spectroscopy and high-throughput sequencing revealed that protein-like substances were degraded in both the control and experimental groups, but degradation of polysaccharide-like substances was more efficient in the experimental group. The degradation of polysaccharide-like and protein-like substances can be attributed to bacteria involved in anaerobic fermentation and electrogenic bacteria. Therefore, in the presence of electrons, polysaccharide-like substances with high MW can be converted into hydroxy-containing compounds with low MW, which are more readily degraded and utilized by microorganisms, thereby preventing membrane fouling.
Membrane fouling mitigation by coagulation and electrostatic repulsion using an electro-AnMBR in kitchen wastewater treatment

Abstract:Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) is considered an efficient technique for kitchen wastewater treatment; however, membrane fouling restricts their applicability. In this study, a novel AnMBR with an Fe anode and Ti membrane cathode (electro-AnMBR) was constructed. The reactor exhibited good performance in pollutant removal and antifouling in kitchen wastewater treatment. Compared with the traditional AnMBR, the electro-AnMBR increased phosphate removal by approximately 55% and reduced transmembrane pressure (TMP) by 50%. Coagulation from the Fe 2+ /Fe 3+ released by the sacrificial anode increased the sludge floc size and porosity, significantly reducing the membrane fouling potential. In addition, the lower amounts of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the electro-AnMBR, due to an increased Methanosarcina abundance, facilitated membrane-fouling mitigation. Almost no TMP difference was observed between the AnMBRs with Ti, ceramic, and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) membranes. Quantitative analysis using an electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring indicated that the electrostatic repulsion between EPS and cathodic membrane was positively correlated with the applied voltage. In addition, proteins in EPS had a higher membrane fouling potential than polysaccharides, and Fe 3+ coagulation reduced adhesion capacity and alleviated membrane fouling. This study provides a perspective viewpoint for AnMBR membrane fouling mitigation and reactor design.

Abstract:How to mitigate membrane fouling remains a critical challenge for widespread application of membrane bioreactors. Herein, an antifouling electrochemical membrane bioreactor (EMBR) was developed based on in-situ utilization of the generated electricity for fouling control. In this system, a maximum power density of 1.43 W/m3 and a current density of 18.49 A/m3 were obtained. The results demonstrate that the formed electric field reduced the deposition of sludge on membrane surface by enhancing the electrostatic repulsive force between them. The produced H2O2 at the cathode also contributed to the fouling mitigation by in-situ removing the membrane foulants. In addition, 93.7% chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal and 96.5% NH4+-N removal in average as well as a low effluent turbidity of below 2 NTU were achieved, indicating a good wastewater treatment performance of the EMBR. This work provides a proof-of-concept study of an antifouling MBR with high wastewater treatment efficiency and electricity recovery, and implies that electrochemical control might provide another promising avenue to in-situ suppress the membrane fouling in MBRs.
Influence of microbubble in physical cleaning of MF membrane process for wastewater reuse

Abstract:Currently, there is a growing emphasis on wastewater reclamation and reuse all over the world due to restricted water resources. Among a variety of wastewater reuse technologies, the use of microfiltration membranes (MF) is one of the popular processes because it has the ability to successfully eliminate particulates and colloidal matters. However, successful fouling control is not easy because effluents from the activated sludge process still contain small particulates and colloidal matters such as extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) and soluble microbial products (SMP). On the other hand, microbubbles have advantageous properties compared to common bubbles, but there hasn’t been reporting of the use of microbubbles in physical cleaning instead of aeration. Encouraging results were obtained herein through the application of microbubbles for physical cleaning. In evaluation of the cleaning efficiency, the efficiency of microbubbles was observed to be twice as high as that of aeration, except during the course of the initial 30 min. Total organic carbon (TOC) concentration of the membrane tank after treatment with microbubbles was more than twice as high as that after aeration for physical cleaning. The membrane cleaned with microbubbles also had the smoothest surface, with a roughness of 42.5 nm. In addition, microbubbles were found to effectively remove EPS and make the structure of the gel layer loose. In particular, the microbubbles had the ability to remove proteins through the effect of pyrolytic decomposition. Therefore, in FT-IR spectra of the membrane surfaces taken before and after physical cleaning, while each treatment showed similar peak positions, the peak values of the membrane treated with microbubbles were the lowest. Through various analyses, it was confirmed that microbubbles can remove foulants on the gel layer in spite of their very low shear force. This means that microbubble cleaning has full potential for use as a physical cleaning method in the wastewater reclamation process.

Abstract:Feed spacer biofouling is a major challenge in membrane processes such as nanofiltration and reverse osmosis. The bubbling of gas using air can be effective in partially controlling biofouling, but additional chemical control is still needed, and pressurized air systems can be difficult to integrate into existing systems. A simpler approach that combines both bubbling and cleaning was developed here on the basis of intermittently adding a low concentration hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) to the feedwater. With periodic dosing (every 12 h) of 0.3% (w/w) H2O2, no detectable biofouling occurred after 10 days of operation, while biofouling was evident without H2O2 dosing. A single dose of 0.3% (w/w) H2O2 to prefouled spacers and membranes rapidly reduced biofouling, with decreased feed channel differential pressures of 69% (CuO spacer) and 54% (polypropylene spacer). The control of biofouling mainly resulted from bubble production when H2O2 dissociated to shear biofilms off the spacers. Using a CuO spacer did not impact biofouling, suggesting that additional cleaning based on hydroxyl radical formation via Fenton-reaction was not necessary. The use of H2O2 alone had the combined advantages of physically shearing off biofilms from spacers and chemically killing bacteria, while providing a low cost approach for biofouling control in membrane-based desalination processes.
Rational design of a hydrophilic nanoarray-structured electro-Fenton membrane for antibiotics removal and fouling mitigation: An intensified catalysis process in an oxygen vacancy‐mediated cathodic microreactor

Abstract:Electro-Fenton membranes (EFMs) can synchronously realize organic micropollutants destruction and fouling mitigation in a single filtration process with the assistance of hydroxyl radicals (•OH). Herein, a nanoarray-structured EFM (NS-EFM) was designed by assembling Fenton reactive CoFe-LDH nanowires using a low-temperature hydrothermal method. Combined with a defect-engineering strategy, the oxygen vacancies (O Vac ) in the CoFe-LDH nanoarrays were tailored by manipulating the stoichiometry of cations to optimize the Fenton reactivity of NS-EFMs. The optimized NS-EFM demonstrated exceptional sulfamethoxazole (SMX) removal (99.4%) and fast degradation kinetics (0.0846 min −1 ), but lower energy consumption (0.22 kWh m −3 per log removal of SMX). In-depth mechanism analysis revealed that the intrinsic electronic properties of O Vac endowed NS-EFM with enhanced reactivity and charge transferability at metallic active sites of CoFe-LDH, thereby intensifying •OH generation. Besides, the nanoarray-structured NS-EFM built a confined microreactor space, leading to expedited •OH microflow to SMX. Meanwhile, the hydrophilic nature of CoFe-LDH nanoarrays synergistically contributed to the high flux recovery (95.0%) and minimal irreversible membrane fouling (5.0%), effectively alleviating membrane fouling within pores and on surfaces. This study offers insights into the potential of defect engineering as a foundational strategy in the design of EFMs, significantly advancing the treatment of organic pollutants and control of membrane fouling.

Abstract:To address the significant challenge of biofouling in ultrafiltration (UF) membranes, primarily caused by bacteria during water purification, we have developed an innovative light-responsive active self-cleaning membrane (TA@Fe-TiO 2 /PVDF). This membrane is produced by coating polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) with a metal-polyphenol-based complex (TA@Fe-TiO 2 MPN). Compared to traditional photocatalytic membranes, such as TiO 2 /PVDF, the TA@Fe-TiO 2 /PVDF self-cleaning membrane demonstrates superior anti-biofouling and self-cleaning properties, achieving nearly complete flux recovery (∼100%) and bactericidal efficiency (close to 100%) in the treatment of municipal secondary effluent without the need for chemical additives. This effectiveness is attributed to the generation of hydroxyl radicals (·OH) and singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) when the membrane is exposed to light, enhanced by the significant photothermal performance of TA@Fe. Notably, the TA@Fe-TiO 2 /PVDF membrane also excels in removing antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), such as tetracycline and sulfadiazine , from wastewater. The removal of bacteria and ARGs is facilitated by a self-cleaning mechanism that combines partial mineralization and oxidation, as evidenced by increased hydrophilicity, active oxygen sites, and electron transfer. The membrane's efficient light-responsive excitation, self-cleaning capability, and stability herald new avenues for the sustainable application of membrane technology in water purification, characterized by reduced energy demands.

Abstract:The impeded mass transfer rate by on-site-generated gas bubbles at both cathode and anode dramatically reduces the energy conversion efficiency of the proton exchange membrane water electrolyzer (PEMWE). Herein, we report a surfactant-assistant method to accelerate the nano/micro-bubble detachment and the mass transfer rate by reducing the surface tension, resulting in an increase in overall efficiency. Four kinds of surfactants are studied in this work. Only potassium perfluorobutyl sulfonate (PPFBS), which has the structural similarity to Nafion, shows a significant promotion of activity and stability for both hygrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in the acidic medium at the high current density region. The HER overpotential at 0.1 A·cm − 2 decreased 22%, and the current density at −0.4 V increased 31% by adding PPFBS. The promotion of overall efficiency by PPFBS on a homemade PEMWE was also proven. The reduced surface tension and electrostatic repulsion were the probable origins of the accelerated bubble detachment.

Abstract:Biofouling is a major operational problem in membrane-based filtration processes, owing to the formation of intractable biofilms. Recently, electrically conductive membranes have attracted significant interest for fouling mitigation by membrane self-cleaning. However, water flux has not been completely recovered by electrochemical self-cleaning using bubble generation on the cathodic membrane surface, with the cause of insufficient water flux recovery not clearly identified. In this study, a carbon nanotube (CNT)/graphene membrane that exhibits high stability even under high voltage (i.e., 15 V) was fabricated. The self-cleaning effect was investigated under different applied voltages and self-cleaning times and evaluated based on water flux recovery and via quantitative biofilm analysis. The developed self-cleaning membrane achieved more than 4 log viable cell removal and 95.2% total extracellular polymeric substance removal on the membrane surface in 10 min. Through filtration and self-cleaning cycles, 100% water flux recovery was achieved, and the stability of the CNT/graphene membrane was verified. It was confirmed that the insufficient recovery of self-cleaning through conventional water electrolysis occurred due to the residual biofilm matrix, and the water flux recovery efficiency was improved using high voltage, suggesting that sufficient recovery can be achieved by a combination of physical and chemical/biological cleaning methods.

Efficient Surface Ionization and Metallization of TFC Membranes with Superior Separation Performance, Antifouling and Anti-Bacterial Properties

Abstract:Membrane-based forward osmosis (FO) technology has attracted increasing interest in the field of water treatment due to its high economical and separation efficiency. However, the availability of a FO membrane with superior separation and antifouling properties is still the critical issue for its real application in wastewater purification. In this work, novel thin-film composite (TFC) membranes are developed by surface ionization with various metal ions and subsequent metallization with the assistance of pre-grafted polyethyleneimine (PEI) and N-containing organic phosphonic acid (OPA), where the latter provides abundant and stable complexing sites. The grafting of hydrophilic PEI/OPA and the attachment of silver atoms endow the resulting membrane a dual defensive and offensive functionality associated with anti-adhesive property and antibacterial activity, respectively. Compared with the control TFC membrane, the surface-modified membranes show significantly improved anti-adhesive property against bovine serum albumin (BSA) and antibacterial property against S. aureus and E. coli bacteria, and thereby improved antifouling property towards the local lake water. Additionally, compared with the silver-metalized TFC membranes prepared by the direct method or indirect PEI binding, the silver-metalized membrane prepared by the indirect OPA binding exhibits a much higher silver loading (34.38 mu g/cm(2)), as well as better, more stable and long-term antibacterial property. Moreover, compared with the control membrane, the modified membranes also have much higher water fluxes (87-141% increase) and comparable or even lower reverse salt fluxes. The influences of the metal ion type used for ionization and the method used for metallization are systematically investigated.
Heterogeneous electro-Fenton catalytic FeOCl@NCNT/ceramic membrane filtration for in-situ membrane fouling control: Performance and mechanism

Abstract:Homogeneous electro-Fenton (EF) technique is effective to mitigate membrane fouling through oxidizing organic foulants by hydroxyl radicals (HO·), but suffers from acid pH working environment (2.5 ∼ 3.5), low iron recyclability, and iron sludge accumulation. Herein, we developed a heterogeneous EF catalytic membrane to overcome these problems. A ceramic membrane (/CM) was prepared to control the membrane fouling caused by humic acid (HA). At near neutral pH (∼ 6.0), the membrane enabled the in-situ generation of HO·. It also imparted an effective regeneration of Fe(II) through cathodic reduction and the electron transfer to Fe(III) from pyrrolic-N. The continuously generated HO· could oxidize the HA on/in the membrane, thus effectively mitigating membrane fouling. Electrostatic repulsion also contributed to fouling control by reducing the adhesion of negatively charged HA on the membrane. In continuous electrification mode, the /CM showed a superior antifouling ability. The water flux of the membrane at an applied voltage of −2.2 V was 1.79 times as high as that without voltage. Both reversible and irreversible membrane fouling were greatly reduced, and the transition of membrane fouling mechanism from pore blockage to cake filtration was significantly delayed. In intermittent electrification mode, the membrane exhibited an excellent self-cleaning performance. The fouled membrane showed considerable water flux recovery ratios (> 95%) after the EF cleaning at −2.2 V. The excellent antifouling and self-cleaning properties, low energy consumption, good stability and reusability of the /CM make it promising for the in-situ control of membrane fouling in water treatment.

Abstract:Anthracene plus near ultraviolet (UV) light (UV-A, 320 to 400 nm) suppresses DNA synthesis and mitosis in mouse epidermis. Ultraviolet-A light or anthracene alone does not have any effect. There is no photoactivation of anthracene to enhance depression of DNA synthesis by either UV-B (290 to 320 nm) or UV-C (254 nm) light. While methoxsalen with UV-A light inhibits DNA synthesis, the phototoxic drugs chlorpromazine hydrochloride and demethylchlortetracycline do not. The combination of anthracene plus UV-A light may have therapeutic effectiveness for psoriasis with less potential for photocarcinogenesis than psoralens plus UV-A light.

Abstract:Highlights • Microbubbles (MBs) were added into liquids for cleaning membranes fouled with oily deposits. • Adding MBs into water did not improve cleaning performance. • Cleaning reversible oil layer with MB NaOH solution markedly enhanced flux recovery. • Increasing crossflow velocity of MB liquids did not guarantee enhancement in cleaning performance. • MBs were ineffective in removing oil deposits irreversibly blocking membrane pores. Food processing generates wastewater containing high contents of fat, oil and grease. As a widely used wastewater treatment method, the process efficiency of membrane filtration can be hindered by membrane fouling, hence periodic cleaning is needed. However, clean-in-place (CIP) operations performed in food processing plants consume large amounts of water, energy, and chemicals. This study incorporated microbubbles (MBs) with the mean diameter of 4.48 μm into liquids at the density of 1431 bubbles/mL as alternative cleaning agents, and investigated their performance of cleaning microfiltration membranes used for food oily wastewater treatment. Palm oil-in-water emulsions were used as model wastewater, increasing the oil concentration changed the dominant fouling mechanism from intermediate blocking to cake formation. MB incorporation into water rinse did not recover the flux of membranes fouled with reversible oil layer, but adding MBs into NaOH solution for cleaning increased the flux recovery by 235%. Increasing the crossflow velocity of MB-incorporated liquids from 0.65 to 0.92 m/s reduced their enhancing effect on cleaning, but further increase to 1.20 m/s had the highest level of enhancement. Moreover, MBs did not significantly enhance the removal of oil deposits irreversibly blocking the membrane pores. MB-assisted cleaning proved a promising technology for integration into current CIP operations to improve their cleaning efficiency with reduced water and chemical usage.

Abstract:Membrane fouling is one of the most challenging issues confining membrane bioreactors (MBRs) application. An integrated electro-MBR (eMBR) was established to explore the performance of antifouling and contaminants removal under the role of electrocoagulation (EC) coupled with an electric field (EF). During the 39 d of operation, the membrane service cycle of the eMBR after each hydraulic cleaning was ∼8 d, on average, which was 1.3 times longer that of MBR. The eMBR exhibited a marked improvement in pollutant removal, with total phosphorus (TP) removal of ∼99% and COD removal of ∼85%. Results revealed that EC and EF increased the porosity and thickness of the cake layer due to floc size enhancement and particle polarization, resulting in the alleviation of membrane fouling. The energy consumption in eMBR and MBR was 45 and 50 kWh/m3, respectively. EPSs experiments show the best EPSs removal efficiency of 90.6% and the highest membrane flux of 65.2% at 4 V/cm. Compared with the conventional MBR, high-throughput sequencing demonstrated an enriched microbial diversity in the eMBR due to the stimulation of by the EF and EC, which, in turn, facilitated the improvement in contaminant removal. These findings provide new insight and principles for the design and operation of eMBRs.

Abstract:Membrane filtration is a key technology in dairy processing for the separation of dairy liquids to clarify, concentrate, and fractionate a variety of dairy products. Ultrafiltration (UF) is widely applied for whey separation, protein concentration and standardization, and lactose-free milk production, though its performance can be hindered by membrane fouling. As an automated cleaning process commonly used in the food and beverage industries, cleaning in place (CIP) uses large amounts of water, chemicals, and energy, resulting in significant environmental impacts. This study introduced micron-scale air-filled bubbles (microbubbles; MBs) with mean diameters smaller than 5 μm into cleaning liquids to clean a pilot-scale UF system. During the UF of model milk for concentration, cake formation was identified as the dominant membrane fouling mechanism. The MB-assisted CIP process was conducted at two bubble number densities (2021 and 10,569 bubbles per mL of cleaning liquid) and two flow rates (130 and 190 L/min). For all the cleaning conditions tested, MB addition largely increased the membrane flux recovery by 31–72%; however, the effects of bubble density and flow rate were insignificant. Alkaline wash was found to be the main step in removing proteinaceous foulant from the UF membrane, though MBs did not show a significant effect on the removal due to the operational uncertainty of the pilot-scale system. The environmental benefits of MB incorporation were quantified by a comparative life cycle assessment and the results indicated that MB-assisted CIP had up to 37% lower environmental impact than control CIP. This is the first study incorporating MBs into a full CIP cycle at the pilot scale and proving their effectiveness in enhancing membrane cleaning. This novel CIP process can help reduce water and energy use in dairy processing and improve the environmental sustainability of the dairy industry.

Abstract:High operational cost due to membrane fouling propensity remains a major drawback for the widespread application of membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology. As a result, studies on membrane fouling mitigation through the application of integrated processes have been widely explored. In this work, the combined application of electrochemical processes and moving bed biofilm reactor (MBBR) technology within an MBR at laboratory scale was performed by applying an intermittent voltage of 3 V/cm to a reactor filled with 30% carriers. The treatment efficiency of the electro moving bed membrane bioreactor (eMB-MBR) technology in terms of ammonium nitrogen (NH4-N) and orthophosphate (PO4-P) removal significantly improved from 49.8% and 76.7% in the moving bed membrane bioreactor (MB-MBR) control system to 55% and 98.7% in the eMB-MBR, respectively. Additionally, concentrations of known fouling precursors and membrane fouling rate were noticeably lower in the eMB-MBR system as compared to the control system. Hence, this study successfully demonstrated an innovative and effective technology (i.e., eMB-MBR) to improve MBR performance in terms of both conventional contaminant removal and fouling mitigation.

Abstract:Low-pressure catalytic membranes allow efficient rejection of particulates and simultaneously removing organics pollutant in water, but the accumulation of dissolved organic matters (DOM) on membrane surface, which cover the catalytic sites and cause membrane fouling, challenges their stable operation in practical wastewater treatment. Here we propose a ferric salt-based coagulation/co-catalytic membrane integrated system that can effectively mitigate the detrimental effects of DOM. Ferric salt (Fe 3+ ) serving both as a DOM coagulant to lower the membrane fouling and as a co-catalyst with the membrane-embedded MoS 2 nanosheets to drive perxymonosulfate (PMS) activation and pollutant degradation. The membrane functionalized with 2H-phased MoS 2 nanosheets showed improved hydrophilicity and fouling resistance relative to the blank polysulfone membrane. Attributed to the DOM coagulation and co-catalytic generation of surface-bound radicals for decontamination at membrane surface, the catalytic membrane/PMS/ Fe 3+ system showed much less membrane fouling and 2.6 times higher pollutant degradation rate in wastewater treatment than the catalytic membrane alone. Our work imply a great potential of coagulation/co-catalytic membrane integrated system for water purification application.

Abstract:Membrane fouling has been considered as the greatest challenge for membrane separation especially in oil/water separation process. Novel strategies for reducing membrane fouling are highly important for membrane separation. In this study, a novel membrane antifouling method in oil/water separation was proposed through in situ generated micro-bubbles. The fouling reduced process was realized by combination of membrane separation and catalytic reaction. Oxygen micro-bubbles were in situ generated by the decomposition of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) under the catalysis of manganese oxide nanoparticles, which were loaded on the surface of carbonized PAN (cPAN) nanofibrous membrane. In situ generated micro-bubbles significantly inhibited the surface deposition of rejected oils through hydrophobic interaction between micro-bubbles and oils. Membrane permeability was significantly reduced to 909 ± 286 Lm−2h−1bar−1 (3% of its initial data) after 65 min of continuous oil-in-water separation. However, it remains as high as 14755 ± 1930 Lm−2h−1bar−1 (67.6% of initial data) with the presence of H2O2, which was 16.2 times higher. The current study presents a potential approach to achieve continuous oil/water emulsion separation with reduced membrane fouling and advance the practical application of membranes for oil/water separation.
