Abstract:Abstract Background Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a serious threat to global healthcare, and inadequate education has been identified as a major challenge by the World Health Organization. Gamification has emerged as an innovative tool to improve knowledge and change behaviours at the grassroots level. This scoping review provides an overview of existing games in prescribers’ education across the One Health sectors, with a particular focus on the impact of gamification in learning. Methods Using the PRISMA guidelines, we searched Cochrane, PubMed, Scopus, and Google Scholar for articles related to gamification for future prescribers’ of AMR until March 28, 2023. Retrieval and screening of articles was done using a structured search protocol with strict inclusion/exclusion criteria. Results A total of 120 articles were retrieved, of which 6 articles met the inclusion criteria for final analysis. Brazil, UK and France were the sites of almost all the gamification trials, with an additional global study incorporating low-middle income countries. All studies were tested in the human healthcare sector only. Board and card games were the most common types of games, with scoring and point systems as the most common game elements. All games focused on improving knowledge and prescribing behaviours of undergraduate students, with bacteria or antibiotics being the only content. Many studies highlight the significant role gamification can play in mitigating AMR, promoting antimicrobial stewardship (AMS), and improving retention of information compared to conventional lectures. Conclusions Our review highlights a lack of standardised content and gameplay across games addressing AMR for future prescribers of antibiotics, and a gap in assessing gamification of AMR as a tool to promote AMS across all three sectors. Our findings will guide the development of a game in the next phase of the project, as a longitudinal study across Norway and Zambia, focused on the One Health approach. Key messages • Tackling AMR requires improved education and awareness of healthcare workers, veterinarians, and agriculture workers around AMR stewardship issues. • The One Health approach is necessary to mitigate AMR, and the foundation of future prescribers’ is vital. Innovative learning tools like gamification can play a pivotal role in this fight.

A brief review of online education resources on gamification in addressing antimicrobial resistance

Abstract:Background: The burden of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is projected to be highest in Africa, with a mortality of 99 per 100 000 deaths in sub-Saharan Africa. As a result, there is an urgent need to develop education resources to raise awareness and improve understanding of AMR. Aims: The aim of this review was to evaluate selected games, and inform regarding their suitability, and that of gamification in general in promoting education, and inspiring action against AMR. Objective: This brief review of online education resources seeks to inform on the use of games in promoting education on AMR by exploring different aspects of gamification such as accessibility, usability and playability with the delivery of desired learning outcomes. The insights obtained from the game helped inform recommendations and conclusions on how to best utilize gamification to deliver AMR education to target audiences. Methods: The games to be reviewed were selected using search terms 'AMR Game', 'Antimicrobial Resistance Game', 'Antibiotic Resistance Game', 'ABR Game', 'Drug Resistance Game' and 'Superbugs Game' in Google Play Store and Apple App Store search engines, given their positioning as suitable application software that house game applications. After applying a selection criterion, the number of selected games was narrowed to two: Micro-Combat and Terebra. Results: The games were analysed through four key factors: accessibility, usability, playability and learning outcomes. Both games were found to apply visual, written and aural game mechanics but Terebra had an increased touch with reality, enhancing its playability, due to the emphasis on aural triggers positioning AMR as a dire health threat. On the other hand, Micro-Combat was found to be more educative, and learning-oriented but less associated with reality, which negatively influenced its playability. Conclusions: In overall, gamification was found to be a good online resource to promote education on AMR through the review conducted on the two games, Terebra and Micro-Combat. Coupling gamification and conventional education mechanisms can go a long way in promoting the awareness and knowledge level of AMR among diverse populations The two games, Terebra and Micro-Combat, are great pilot AMR gamification projects that have set a good pace for utilization of games in AMR education. There is a need to develop AMR educational games that portray the reality in low- and middle-income countries, which was a bit lacking in the two games.

The pathology of the specimen obtained from transurethral prostatectomy showed B-cell lymphoma ofmucosa-associated lymphoid tissue (MALT)type. The patient has been asymptomaticand under complete remission after completion of chemotherapyconsisting of doxorubicin, cyclophosphamide, vincristine and prednisone for 6 cycles. Abstract:Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global problem. Its important to create awareness of the rational use of antibiotics to curb AMR. Objective: To improve the awareness of the rational use of antibiotics through innovative games for High School Students. Design: Prospective interventional study Setting: Twelve High Schools in the city of Mysuru, South India. Participants: 2195 Students between 13 and 16 years. Intervention: Innovative gamified interventions to educate on the rational use of antibiotics. Use of antibiotics only in bacterial infections of the respiratory tract, gut, urinary tract and skin was introduced through black blackboard. An animated video was shown on the effects of irrational antibiotic use. Situations in which antibiotics can be avoided in respiratory infections and gastroenteritis were taught through Bucketing the Ball and Monkeying with Donkey games. Pre-test and Post-test questionnaires were administered and evaluated. Main outcome measures: To assess the improvement in awareness of the rational use of antibiotics. Results: After the intervention, knowledge of the use of antibiotics only for bacterial infections improved from 11.5% to 82.5% and ill-effects of antibiotics improved from 2.5% to 82.5%. Awareness of when not to use and when to use antibiotics for respiratory infections and gastroenteritis improved from 5.1% to 96.77%, awareness of better use of antibiotics for urinary and skin infections improved from 19.6% to 90.38% and not buying antibiotics directly from the pharmacy without prescription, and completing the antibiotic course improved from 20.3% to 91.92%. p-value < 0.05 for all components. Conclusions: Awareness of the rational use of antibiotics is very poor among the general public. The need of the hour is to create awareness not only among healthcare providers but also among the general public. Innovative gamified interventions create better and long-lasting awareness of this.
AntibioGame®: A serious game for teaching medical students about antibiotic use

Abstract:IntroductionMeasures for controlling antimicrobial resistance are urgently required. We describe here AntibioGame®, a serious game for improving the training of medical students in antibiotic use in primary care.ObjectiveWe aimed to design a serious game for antibiotics teaching and to evaluate its usability and playability by medical students.MethodsWe used various gamification techniques (e.g. use of mascots, avatars, rewards, leader board) and cartoon graphics in the design of AntibioGame®. This game implements clinical case templates built from a list of learning goals defined by a medical team through an analysis of clinical practice guidelines. The game was evaluated by asking medical students to rate their satisfaction and the usability and playability of the game on an electronic form and through group discussions. The electronic form was derived from the MEEGA + scale, a five-point Likert scale including 32 items for assessing both usability and playability.ResultsAntibioGame® is a case-based game in which students play the role of a doctor meeting patients in consultation and helping other health professionals to solve their problems, as in real life. The scenarios are realistic and cover situations frequently encountered in primary care. The 57 medical students enrolled found the game attractive, usable, fun, and appropriate for learning. Game quality was considered "good" (score = 60 on the MEEGA + scale). All the students said they would recommend the game, 96% liked it and 81% would use it for revision.ConclusionAntibioGame® is a promising tool for improving knowledge in antibiotic prescription that could easily be included in multifaceted programs for training medical students.

Abstract:Antibiotic resistance is one of the biggest threats to global health, food security and development. Urgent action is needed at all levels of society to reduce the impact and spread of antibiotic resistance. For a more sustaining approach, education in children, college students, citizens and caregivers are essential. The One-Heath approach is a collaborative, multisectoral and transdisciplinary strategy in which, no single organizations or sector can address the issue of antimicrobial resistance at the human–environment interface alone. Within this strategy, education plays a central role. In this scoping review, we highlighted a range of learning activities on antibiotic resistance as part of the One-Health approach. In particular, those applications that can be introduced to a wide audience to help arrest the current crisis for the next generation. The review identifies a high number of teaching opportunities: board and role-play games, round tables, musicals, e-learning and environmental experiments to couple with more curricula and formal education to inform a diverse group of audiences.
Gamification in pharmacy education: a systematic quantitative literature review

Abstract:Objectives: Gamification involves applying game attributes to non-game contexts and its educational use is increasing. It is essential to review the outcomes and the efficacy of gamification to identify evidence to support its use in pharmacy education. This article: systematically and quantitatively reviews and evaluates the alignment of learning outcomes and the quality of peer-reviewed literature reporting gamification in pharmacy education. Key findings: A literature search was undertaken in February 2022 using CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE, Science Direct, Scopus and ERIC databases, via keywords (game* OR gaming OR gamif*) AND pharmac* AND education. Google Scholar was searched using 'gamification of pharmacy education' and 'serious games in pharmacy education'. Data extracted included type of gamified intervention, mode of delivery, game fidelity, intended learning outcomes and outcomes reported. Quality assessments aligned with key aspects of the SQUIRE-EDU Reporting Guidelines. Of 759 abstracts and 95 full-text papers assessed, 66 articles met the inclusion criteria. They described gamification from 12 countries in the education of 8272 pharmacy and health professional students. Gamified interventions ranged from board games to immersive simulations, with escape rooms most frequently reported. Reporting quality was inconsistent, with observed misalignment between intended learning outcomes and outcomes reported, an apparent overreliance on student perceptions as primary data and a lack of reference to reporting guidelines. Summary: Gamification is included in the curricula of many pharmacy degrees, across multiple subject areas. This review identified evidence gaps and reinforces the need for improved quality of gamification research, critical alignment of learning outcomes with evaluation, and use of reporting guidelines.
Health Professions Digital Education on Antibiotic Management: Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis by the Digital Health Education Collaboration

Abstract:Background: Inappropriate antibiotic prescription is one of the key contributors to antibiotic resistance, which is managed with a range of interventions including education. Objective: We aimed to summarize evidence on the effectiveness of digital education of antibiotic management compared to traditional education for improving health care professionals' knowledge, skills, attitudes, and clinical practice. Methods: Seven electronic databases and two trial registries were searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and cluster RCTs published between January 1, 1990, and September 20, 2018. There were no language restrictions. We also searched the International Clinical Trials Registry Platform Search Portal and metaRegister of Controlled Trials to identify unpublished trials and checked the reference lists of included studies and relevant systematic reviews for study eligibility. We followed Cochrane methods to select studies, extract data, and appraise and synthesize eligible studies. We used random-effect models for the pooled analysis and assessed statistical heterogeneity by visual inspection of a forest plot and calculation of the I2 statistic. Results: Six cluster RCTs and two RCTs with 655 primary care practices, 1392 primary care physicians, and 485,632 patients were included. The interventions included personal digital assistants; short text messages; online digital education including emails and websites; and online blended education, which used a combination of online digital education and traditional education materials. The control groups received traditional education. Six studies assessed postintervention change in clinical practice. The majority of the studies (4/6) reported greater reduction in antibiotic prescription or dispensing rate with digital education than with traditional education. Two studies showed significant differences in postintervention knowledge scores in favor of mobile education over traditional education (standardized mean difference=1.09, 95% CI 0.90-1.28; I2=0%; large effect size; 491 participants [2 studies]). The findings for health care professionals' attitudes and patient-related outcomes were mixed or inconclusive. Three studies found digital education to be more cost-effective than traditional education. None of the included studies reported on skills, satisfaction, or potential adverse effects. Conclusions: Findings from studies deploying mobile or online modalities of digital education on antibiotic management were complementary and found to be more cost-effective than traditional education in improving clinical practice and postintervention knowledge, particularly in postregistration settings. There is a lack of evidence on the effectiveness of other digital education modalities such as virtual reality or serious games. Future studies should also include health care professionals working in settings other than primary care and low- and middle-income countries. A practice-based approach to teaching antimicrobial therapy using artificial intelligence and gamified learning

Abstract:Objectives: Scalable teaching through apps and artificial intelligence (AI) is of rising interest in academic practice. We focused on how medical students could benefit from this trend in learning antibiotic stewardship (ABS). Our study evaluated the impact of gamified learning on factual knowledge and uncertainty in antibiotic prescription. We also assessed an opportunity for AI-empowered evaluation of freeform answers. Methods: We offered four short courses focusing on ABS, with 46 participating medical students who self-selected themselves into the elective course. Course size was limited by the faculty. At the start of the course, students were given a questionnaire about microbiology, infectious diseases, pharmacy and qualitative questions regarding their proficiency of selecting antibiotics for therapy. Students were followed up with the same questionnaire for up to 12 months. We selected popular game mechanics with commonly known rules for teaching and an AI for evaluating freeform questions. Results: The number of correctly answered questions improved significantly for three topics asked in the introductory examination, as did the self-assessed safety of prescribing antibiotics. The AI-based review of freeform answers was found to be capable of revealing students' learning gaps and identifying topics in which students needed further teaching. Conclusions: We showed how an interdisciplinary short course on ABS featuring gamified learning and AI could substantially improve learning. Even though large language models are a relatively new technology that sometimes fails to produce the anticipated results, they are a possible first step in scaling a tutor-based teaching approach in ABS.

Abstract:PURPOSE: This paper explores inclusion of topics on antimicrobial resistance (AMR) and antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) in pre-service human and animal healthcare professional curricula as mandated in the first strategic objective of National Action Plan on Antimicrobial Resistance.METHODS: Online versions of pre-service medical [Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)], dental [Bachelor of dental sciences (BDS)], pharmacy [Bachelor of Pharmacy (B Pharm)], veterinary [Bachelor of veterinary science and animal husbandry (B.V.Sc. & A.H.)] and post graduate medical [Doctor of medicine (MD), Master of surgery (MS) and post graduate (PG) medical diploma courses] curricula and hardcopy of nursing (Bachelor of science (BSc) Nursing-Basic) curricula were assessed. Validated search terms were used for identifying individual learning topics, domains of learning and number of hours of learning related to AMS and AMR. Recent edition of commonly referred medical textbooks were manually checked for inclusion of chapters or separate sections on AMR and AMS.RESULTS: Low coverage and poor depth with no mention of required duration of learning for AMR and AMS was observed across the majority of curricula. MS, BDS, B Pharm and BSc nursing curricula did not include AMR and AMS. Out of twenty-three textbooks assessed, only six textbooks included AMS. Gynecology, Obstetrics, Orthopedic and Surgery textbooks did not include separate section on AMR or AMS.CONCLUSIONS: Our study documented inadequate inclusion of AMR and AMS in pre-service medical, dental, nursing, pharmacy and veterinary curricula and post graduate medical curriculum. Standardized education regarding AMR and AMS in multi-professional curricula by educational councils across sectors and updating of medical textbooks of all the subjects by authors/publishers for adequate emphasis on these topics is urgently needed for success of 'One health' in combating AMR.

Gamification of health professions education: a systematic review

Abstract:Gamification refers to using game attributes in a non-gaming context. Health professions educators increasingly turn to gamification to optimize students' learning outcomes. However, little is known about the concept of gamification and its possible working mechanisms. This review focused on empirical evidence for the effectiveness of gamification approaches and theoretical rationales for applying the chosen game attributes. We systematically searched multiple databases, and included all empirical studies evaluating the use of game attributes in health professions education. Of 5044 articles initially identified, 44 met the inclusion criteria. Negative outcomes for using gamification were not reported. Almost all studies included assessment attributes (n = 40), mostly in combination with conflict/challenge attributes (n = 27). Eight studies revealed that this specific combination had increased the use of the learning material, sometimes leading to improved learning outcomes. A relatively small number of studies was performed to explain mechanisms underlying the use of game attributes (n = 7). Our findings suggest that it is possible to improve learning outcomes in health professions education by using gamification, especially when employing game attributes that improve learning behaviours and attitudes towards learning. However, most studies lacked well-defined control groups and did not apply and/or report theory to understand underlying processes. Future research should clarify mechanisms underlying gamified educational interventions and explore theories that could explain the effects of these interventions on learning outcomes, using well-defined control groups, in a longitudinal way. In doing so, we can build on existing theories and gain a practical and comprehensive understanding of how to select the right game elements for the right educational context and the right type of student.
An Evidence-Based Serious Game App for Public Education on Antibiotic Use and Resistance: Randomized Controlled Trial

Abstract:Background: The misuse and overuse of antibiotics accelerate the development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Serious games, any form of games that serve a greater purpose other than entertainment, could augment public education above ongoing health promotion efforts. Hence, we developed an evidence-based educational serious game app-SteWARdS Antibiotic Defence-to educate players on good antibiotic use practices and AMR through a game quest comprising 3 minigames and interaction with the nonplayer characters. Objective: We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of the SteWARdS Antibiotic Defence app in improving the knowledge of, attitude toward, and perceptions (KAP) of appropriate antibiotic use and AMR among the public in Singapore. Methods: We conducted a 2-arm parallel randomized controlled trial, recruiting visitors aged 18-65 years from 2 polyclinics in Singapore. Intervention group participants had to download the SteWARdS Antibiotic Defence app (available only in English and on the Android platform) on their smartphones and complete the quest in the app. Participants took half a day to 2 weeks to complete the quest. The control group received no intervention. Knowledge questions on antibiotic use and AMR (11 binary questions) were self-administered at baseline, immediately after the intervention, and 6-10 weeks post intervention, while attitudes and perception questions (14 three-point Likert-scale questions) were self-administered at baseline and 6-10 weeks post intervention. We also collected participants' feedback on app usage. Results: Participants (n=348; intervention: n=142, control: n=206) had a mean age of 36.9 years. Intervention group participants showed a statistically significant improvement in mean knowledge score (effect size: 0.58 [95% CI 0.28-0.87]) compared with controls after accounting for age, educational level, and exposure to advertisements on antibiotics and AMR. Intervention participants also showed a statistically significant improvement in mean attitude-perception scores (effect size: 0.98 (95% CI 0.44-1.52)) after adjusting for marital status and race. A majority of participants agreed that the "SteWARdS Antibiotic Defence" app improved their awareness on antibiotic use (135/142, 95.1%) and AMR (136/142, 95.8%). About 73.9% (105/142) of the participants agreed that the app is easy to use, 70.4% (100/142) agreed that the app was enjoyable, and 85.2% (121/142) would recommend the app to others. Conclusions: Our educational serious game app improves participants' KAP on appropriate antibiotic use and AMR. Public education apps should be engaging, educational, easy to use, and have an attractive user interface. Future research should assess the effectiveness of interventions in facilitating long-term knowledge retention and long-lasting behavioral change. Abstract:Abstract Background Polypharmacy is becoming increasingly common and all doctors must be prepared to manage it competently. Aims The aim of this project is to evaluate the feasibility and use of a novel gamification-based teaching intervention on polypharmacy among doctors undergoing advanced geriatric training. Among others, one of the learning goals for the students was to be able to describe the adherence to medication. Methods Electronic questionnaire sent to students of the third session “evidence-based medicine in geriatrics” of advanced postgraduate course in geriatrics of the European Academy for Medicine of Ageing. Results Most students reported issues with forgetting doses and remembering sufficiently to establish a medication routine due to busy schedules as well as social influences around medication taking. Reflecting on the challenges of the game, most students reported that their own prescribing practice was likely to change. Discussion and conclusion The current model of learning appears to be a feasible approach for postgraduate medical education or in other areas of healthcare such as nursing or physiotherapy. Learning through action and reflection promotes deeper thinking and can lead to behavioral change, in this case thus enhancing the attitudes and understanding regarding pharmacological issues associated with ageing. Recommendations for future research in medical education about medication adherence are outlined.

Students enter medical school with a high level of technological literacy and an expectation for instructional variety in the curriculum. In response, many medical schools now incorporate technology-enhanced active learning and multimedia education applications. Education games, medical mobile applications, and virtual patient simulations are together termed gamified training platforms . Objective: To review available literature for the benefits of using gamified training platforms for medical education (both preclinical and clinical) and training. Also, to identify platforms suitable for these purposes with links to multimedia content. Methods: Peer-reviewed literature, commercially published media, and grey literature were searched to compile an archive of recently published scientific evaluations of gamified training platforms for medical education. Specific educational games, mobile applications, and virtual simulations useful for preclinical and clinical training were identified and categorized. Available evidence was summarized as it related to potential educational advantages of the identified platforms for medical education. Results: Overall, improved learning outcomes have been demonstrated with virtual patient simulations. Games have the potential to promote learning, increase engagement, allow for real-word application, and enhance collaboration. They can also provide opportunities for risk-free clinical decision making, distance training, learning analytics, and swift feedback. A total of 5 electronic games and 4 mobile applications were identified for preclinical training, and 5 electronic games, 10 mobile applications, and 12 virtual patient simulation tools were identified for clinical training. Nine additional gamified, virtual environment training tools not commercially available were also identified. Conclusion: Many published studies suggest possible benefits from using gamified media in medical curriculum. This is a rapidly growing field. More research is required to rigorously evaluate the specific educational benefits of these interventions. This archive of hyperlinked tools can be used as a resource for all levels of medical trainees, providers, and educators.

Abstract:Introduction: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a major global health threat, particularity in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs) where antibiotics are readily available, leading to antibiotic misuse. Educational interventions are lacking in Zambia. Our study assessed antimicrobial use and resistance knowledge, attitude and perceived quality of education relating to AMR in Zambian medical schools. Methods: A cross-sectional anonymous survey of students at six accredited medical schools in Zambia using a self-administered questionnaire was administered, using Qualtrics. Chi-squared, Fisher exact test, Pearson correlation test and Student's t-tests were performed for descriptive analyses. Multivariable logistic regression was used to examine associations between knowledge and antibiotic use, beliefs and behaviours. Analysis was performed in SAS version 9.4. Results: One hundred and eighty responses from six medical schools were included in the final analysis. Fifty-six percent of students rated their overall education on antibiotic use as useful or very useful. Ninety-one percent thought that antibiotics are overused, and 88% thought resistance was a problem in Zambia. Only 47% felt adequately trained on antibiotic prescribing, and 43% felt confident in choosing the correct antibiotic for specific infections. Only 2% felt prepared interpreting antibiograms, 3% were trained to de-escalate to narrow-spectrum antibiotics, 6% knew how to transition from IV antibiotics to oral antibiotics, 12% knew of dosing and duration, and 14% understood the spectrum of activity of antibiotics. Forty-seven percent of respondents think hand hygiene is unimportant. Conclusions: Medical students in Zambia expressed a good level of knowledge, but low levels of training and confidence regarding antimicrobial prescribing practices and resistance. Our study highlights training gaps and possible areas of intervention in the medical school curriculum.

Abstract:Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a global health challenge that threatens humans, animals and the environment. Evidence is emerging for a role of healthcare infrastructure, environments and patient pathways in promoting and maintaining AMR via direct and indirect mechanisms. Advances in vaccination and monoclonal antibody therapies together with integrated surveillance, rapid diagnostics, targeted antimicrobial therapy and infection control measures offer opportunities to address healthcare-associated AMR risks more effectively. Additionally, innovations in artificial intelligence, data linkage and intelligent systems can be used to better predict and reduce AMR and improve healthcare resilience. In this Review, we examine the mechanisms by which healthcare functions as a driver, reservoir and amplifier of AMR, contextualized within a One Health framework. We also explore the opportunities and innovative solutions that can be used to combat AMR throughout the patient journey. We provide a perspective on the current evidence for the effectiveness of interventions designed to mitigate healthcare-associated AMR and promote healthcare resilience within high-income and resource-limited settings, as well as the challenges associated with their implementation.

Abstract:Background: One of the main threats to public health today is antibiotic resistance. This resistance leads to the persistence of infections in the body. It poses an increased risk of transmission to humans and animals through various routes, such as food, water, and the environment. Objectives: This study aimed to ascertain the overall prevalence of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antimicrobial resistance in Africa. Methods: A systematic review and meta-analysis of published and unpublished studies was conducted in Africa according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Searches were conducted using appropriate search terms in PubMed, Web of Science, Science Direct, Google Scholar, African Journals Online, and the Cochrane Library. Data were extracted using Microsoft Excel, and STATA version 14 was used for analysis. Publication bias was checked by funnel plot, Egger, and Begg regression tests. A p -value of 0.05 was regarded to indicate potential publication bias. Using I2 statistics, the heterogeneity of the studies was evaluated. Using forest plots, the random effect model was used to present the pooled prevalence with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of meta-analysis. Results: This review included 39 studies, with 18,769 study participants. Among these 39 studies, 38 were on knowledge assessment, 28 on attitude assessment, and 25 on good practice assessment towards antimicrobial resistances. The overall pooled prevalence level of knowledge regarding antimicrobial resistance in Africa was 55.33% (95% CI: 47.48, 63.18). The overall pooled prevalence of positive attitudes toward antimicrobial resistance in Africa was 46.93% (95% CI: 35.10, 58.76), and the overall pooled prevalence of good practice of antimicrobial resistance in Africa was 51.05% (95% CI: 45.24, 56.87). In addition, sub-group statistical analysis was performed in this meta-analysis, stratified by population sub-region and study design types. Conclusion: In Africa, the pooled prevalence of knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding antimicrobial drug resistance among different groups, including the general population, patients, tertiary school students, healthcare workers, and animal owners was found to be low level. Therefore, it is imperative to enhance the education and training programs regarding antibiotic resistance for various groups including the general public, patients, students, healthcare workers, and individuals responsible for the well-being of animals.

Gamified learning for resuscitation education: A systematic review

Abstract:Aim: To systematically review published literature to evaluate the impact of gamified learning on educational and clinical outcomes during life support education. Methods: This systematic review was conducted as part of the continuous evidence evaluation process of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). A search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane was conducted from inception until February 12, 2024. Studies examining incorporation of gamified learning were eligible for inclusion. Reviewers independently extracted data on study design and outcomes; appropriate risk of bias assessment tools were used across all outcomes. Results: 2261 articles were identified and screened, yielding sixteen articles (seven randomized trials, nine observational studies) which comprised the final review. No meta-analyses were conducted due to significant heterogeneity of intervention, population, and outcome. Only one study was found to have a low risk of bias; the remaining studies were found to have moderate to high risk. Fourteen studies were in healthcare providers and two were in laypersons. Most studies (11 of 16) examined the impact of a digital platform (computer or smartphone). Most (15 of 16) studies found a positive effect on at least one educational domain; one study found no effect. No included study found a negative effect on any educational domain. Conclusion: This systematic review found a very heterogeneous group of studies with low certainty evidence, all but one of which demonstrated a positive effect on one or more educational domains. Future studies should examine the underlying causes of improved learning with gamification and assess the resource requirements with implementation and dissemination of gamified learning.
