Abstract:Abstract Background: Medical education is rapidly evolving. Students enter medical school with a high level of technological literacy and an expectation for instructional variety in the curriculum. In response, many medical schools now incorporate technology-enhanced active learning and multimedia education applications. Education games, medical mobile applications, and virtual patient simulations are together termed gamified training platforms . Objective: To review available literature for the benefits of using gamified training platforms for medical education (both preclinical and clinical) and training. Also, to identify platforms suitable for these purposes with links to multimedia content. Methods: Peer-reviewed literature, commercially published media, and grey literature were searched to compile an archive of recently published scientific evaluations of gamified training platforms for medical education. Specific educational games, mobile applications, and virtual simulations useful for preclinical and clinical training were identified and categorized. Available evidence was summarized as it related to potential educational advantages of the identified platforms for medical education. Results: Overall, improved learning outcomes have been demonstrated with virtual patient simulations. Games have the potential to promote learning, increase engagement, allow for real-word application, and enhance collaboration. They can also provide opportunities for risk-free clinical decision making, distance training, learning analytics, and swift feedback. A total of 5 electronic games and 4 mobile applications were identified for preclinical training, and 5 electronic games, 10 mobile applications, and 12 virtual patient simulation tools were identified for clinical training. Nine additional gamified, virtual environment training tools not commercially available were also identified. Conclusion: Many published studies suggest possible benefits from using gamified media in medical curriculum. This is a rapidly growing field. More research is required to rigorously evaluate the specific educational benefits of these interventions. This archive of hyperlinked tools can be used as a resource for all levels of medical trainees, providers, and educators.

Abstract:At present, medical education is rapidly evolving. Game-based learning (GBL) has been gradually used for education, and several innovations have emerged. The emergence of serious games and gamification provides alternative approaches for educators to improve the medical teaching process. Both serious games and gamification exert their education-promoting function by providing the possibility of combining learning activities such as feedback, testing, and spaced repetition with active participation and autonomy as well as positive experiences for students. Developing effective GBL modalities has the potential to bring immersive experiences for medical students and improve their study outcomes. Herein, we reviewed recent studies employing GBL in medical education, including serious games and gamification teaching. Furthermore, we also discussed the effectiveness and limitations of GBL to suggest future directions for the development and application of GBL in medical education.

Abstract:The concept of serious games and gamification in medical education is gaining attention due to its nature of curiosity and to engage the student's attention by simultaneous cultivation of their higher-level thinking without the experience of boredom. Significant differences were reported among the present medical students, generations Y and Z compared to earlier generations. The advancements in serious games for medical education fit well with millennial medical students' learning styles. Till date, there are no scientific research studies available in literature majorly using solo playing gaming experience for medical Physiology teaching, learning, and assessment in medical schools. In this unsystematic (narrative) review, the development and process in gamification for medical Physiology teaching and assessment has been analyzed. Inclusion criteria: list of articles from PubMed, Medline, and Cochrane by means of manual search with the key words include; gamification on Physiology teaching, learning; serious games created/developed for medical Physiology. Exclusion criteria include the articles not involving medical Physiology teaching, gaming app application, card board games, and quiz games. This review explores the difficulties and practical challenges encountered by a medical educator/doctor professional toward the development of solo playing gamified platform. Also further necessitates the user-friendly interface or apps that involve drop and drag options for serious solo playing games development for medical education. Additionally, insists the addition of gamification elements and artificial intelligence tools application as one of the components of curriculum as electives in medical schools for undergraduate and post graduate level. These will pave the way for medical educators to familiarize the gamification designing tools for various serious solo playing games for medical subjects' teaching, learning, and assessment.

Abstract:Objective: The successful application of gamification in different educational settings shows that the use of gamification in medical education may be an effective solution. Even though many studies have been conducted to investigate the efficacy of the integration of gamification to different education curriculums, few studies have examined the reactions, behaviors, and attitudes of learners toward the use of gamification in medical education. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the medical students' learning experience and acceptance of the use of gamification for the delivery of electrocardiogram lessons. Materials and methods: A qualitative research method was used to generate findings in this study. The data collection methods included focus group discussions and interviews. Triangulation methods were used to ensure the validity and reliability of the qualitative data analyzed in this study. The thematic analysis of the data collected in this study helped to garner insights into the perception of participants and experts about the use of GaMed@™ for the delivery of ECG lessons. Results: A total number of 32 medical students and four experts in the fields of user experience, communication, social psychology, and game design participated in this study. The findings showed that in spite of the negative reports about the user experience and application of GaMed@™, the participants and experts affirmed its positive impact on the increased motivation and engagement of users. Conclusions: The impact of this concept can be maximized by tailoring the game design to foster-positive learning attributes, behaviors, and outcomes in students. However, further research studies must be conducted to investigate the impact of gamification designs on specific learning outcomes in students.

Abstract:Unlike traditional video games developed solely for entertainment purposes, game-based learning employs intentionally crafted approaches that seamlessly merge entertainment and educational content, resulting in captivating and effective learning encounters. These pedagogical methods include serious video games and gamification. Serious games are video games utilized as tools for acquiring crucial (serious) knowledge and skills. On the other hand, gamification requires integrating gaming elements (game mechanics) such as points, leaderboards, missions, levels, rewards, and more, into a context that may not be associated with video gaming activities. They can be dynamically (game dynamics) combined developing various strategic approaches. Operatively, gamification adopts simulation elements and leverages the interactive nature of gaming to teach players specific skills, convey knowledge, or address real-world issues. External incentives stimulate internal motivation. Therefore, these techniques place the learners in the central role, allowing them to actively construct knowledge through firsthand experiences.Anesthesia, pain medicine, and critical care demand a delicate interplay of technical competence and non-technical proficiencies. Gamification techniques can offer advantages to both domains. Game-based modalities provide a dynamic, interactive, and highly effective opportunity to learn, practice, and improve both technical and non-technical skills, enriching the overall proficiency of anesthesia professionals. These properties are crucial in a discipline where personal skills, human factors, and the influence of stressors significantly impact daily work activities. Furthermore, gamification can also be embraced for patient education to enhance comfort and compliance, particularly within pediatric settings (game-based distraction), and in pain medicine through stress management techniques. On these bases, the creation of effective gamification tools for anesthesiologists can present a formidable opportunity for users and developers.This narrative review comprehensively examines the intricate aspects of gamification and its potentially transformative influence on the fields of anesthesiology. Gamification of health professions education: a systematic review

Abstract:Gamification refers to using game attributes in a non-gaming context. Health professions educators increasingly turn to gamification to optimize students' learning outcomes. However, little is known about the concept of gamification and its possible working mechanisms. This review focused on empirical evidence for the effectiveness of gamification approaches and theoretical rationales for applying the chosen game attributes. We systematically searched multiple databases, and included all empirical studies evaluating the use of game attributes in health professions education. Of 5044 articles initially identified, 44 met the inclusion criteria. Negative outcomes for using gamification were not reported. Almost all studies included assessment attributes (n = 40), mostly in combination with conflict/challenge attributes (n = 27). Eight studies revealed that this specific combination had increased the use of the learning material, sometimes leading to improved learning outcomes. A relatively small number of studies was performed to explain mechanisms underlying the use of game attributes (n = 7). Our findings suggest that it is possible to improve learning outcomes in health professions education by using gamification, especially when employing game attributes that improve learning behaviours and attitudes towards learning. However, most studies lacked well-defined control groups and did not apply and/or report theory to understand underlying processes. Future research should clarify mechanisms underlying gamified educational interventions and explore theories that could explain the effects of these interventions on learning outcomes, using well-defined control groups, in a longitudinal way. In doing so, we can build on existing theories and gain a practical and comprehensive understanding of how to select the right game elements for the right educational context and the right type of student.

Abstract:With the recent rapid changes in the medical environment and technology, traditional teaching methods are no longer sufficient to meet current professional needs. There is an increasing demand for emerging technologies in higher education, necessitating more interactive and personalized educational approaches. Hence, educators are exploring innovative teaching interventions, including digital simulations and gamified learning, to enhance motivation and engagement in learning. In this article, the concept and core elements of gamified learning are introduced and related methods applicable to nursing education such as digital simulations, virtual reality, tabletop games, and escape rooms are described. In addition, gamification teaching techniques that enhance student learning motivation as well as improve learning outcomes in theory and practice are discussed. Gamified learning enables nursing students to practice in rich and diverse interactive simulated environments. Using appropriate teaching strategies, the gamified approach to learning can strengthen critical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and communication confidence in students. Designing game mechanisms and methods that align with educational objectives and mastering the key principles of gamified teaching is an effective approach to diversifying and enhancing the effectiveness of learning activities in the classroom.

Abstract:Gamification refers to the process of adding game elements to a task. Of late, this process has been introduced in pedagogical settings to capture the attention and interest of students. In our study, we apply the process to Anatomy students and assess the impact on their learning behaviour. We apply a novel path analysis to assess the change in their learning behaviour after a semester of games-enhanced small group sessions. We find that too much games could reduce their enjoyment of the underlying learning. However, we also find that students appreciate a change in the traditional model of instruction - they embraced peer-to-peer learning in the classroom.

Escape into patient safety: bringing human factors to life for medical students

Abstract:Background: Patient safety is at the core of the General Medical Council (GMC) standards for undergraduate medical education. It is recognised that patient safety and human factors' education is necessary for doctors to practice safely. Teaching patient safety to medical students is difficult. Institutions must develop expertise and build curricula while students must also be able to see the subject as relevant to future practice. Consequently graduates may lack confidence in this area. Method: We used gamification (the application of game design principles to education) to create a patient safety simulation for medical students using game elements. Gamification builds motivation and engagement, whilst developing teamwork and communication. We designed an escape room-a team-based game where learners solve a series of clinical and communication-based tasks in order to treat a fictional patient while avoiding 'clinician error'. This is followed up with an after action review where students reflect on their experience and identify learning points. Outcome: Students praised the session's interactivity and rated it highly for gaining new knowledge and skills and for increasing confidence to apply patient safety concepts to future work. Conclusion: Our findings are in line with existing evidence demonstrating the success of experiential learning interventions for teaching patient safety to medical students. Where the escape room has potential to add value is the use of game elements to engage learners with the experience being recreated despite its simplicity as a simulation. More thorough evaluation of larger pilots is recommended to continue exploring the effectiveness of escape rooms as a teaching method.
Gamified learning for resuscitation education: A systematic review

Abstract:Aim: To systematically review published literature to evaluate the impact of gamified learning on educational and clinical outcomes during life support education. Methods: This systematic review was conducted as part of the continuous evidence evaluation process of the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR). A search of PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane was conducted from inception until February 12, 2024. Studies examining incorporation of gamified learning were eligible for inclusion. Reviewers independently extracted data on study design and outcomes; appropriate risk of bias assessment tools were used across all outcomes. Results: 2261 articles were identified and screened, yielding sixteen articles (seven randomized trials, nine observational studies) which comprised the final review. No meta-analyses were conducted due to significant heterogeneity of intervention, population, and outcome. Only one study was found to have a low risk of bias; the remaining studies were found to have moderate to high risk. Fourteen studies were in healthcare providers and two were in laypersons. Most studies (11 of 16) examined the impact of a digital platform (computer or smartphone). Most (15 of 16) studies found a positive effect on at least one educational domain; one study found no effect. No included study found a negative effect on any educational domain. Conclusion: This systematic review found a very heterogeneous group of studies with low certainty evidence, all but one of which demonstrated a positive effect on one or more educational domains. Future studies should examine the underlying causes of improved learning with gamification and assess the resource requirements with implementation and dissemination of gamified learning.

Abstract:A 68-year-old man with anterior ST-elevation acute myocardial infarction was treated with primary angioplasty of the proximal left anterior descending (LAD) artery. Coronary angiography showed coronary atherosclerosis and a rare combination of congenital coronary anomalies on other coronary vessels (myocardial bridge on mid-LAD and ectopic origin of the circumflex coronary). Coronary angioplasty on the ectopic circumflex was therefore required.

Abstract:Objective This review evaluates the effectiveness of smartphone applications in improving academic performance and clinical practice among healthcare professionals and students. Methods This study followed the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. Articles were retrieved from PubMed, Scopus, and Cochrane library through a comprehensive search strategy. Studies that included medical, dental, nursing, allied healthcare professional, undergraduates, postgraduates, and interns from the same disciplines who used mobile applications for their academic learning and/or daily clinical practice were considered. Results 52 studies with a total of 4057 learner participants were included in this review. 33 studies (15 RCTs, 1 cluster RCT, 7 quasi-experimental studies, 9 interventional cohort studies and 1 cross-sectional study) reported that mobile applications were an effective tool that contributed to a significant improvement in the knowledge level of the participants. The pooled effect of 15 studies with 962 participants showed that the knowledge score improved significantly in the group using mobile applications when compared to the group who did not use mobile applications (SMD = 0.94, 95% CI = 0.57 to1.31, P<0.00001). 19 studies (11 RCTs, 3 quasi-experimental studies and 5 interventional cohort studies) reported that mobile applications were effective in significantly improving skills among the participants. Conclusion Mobile applications are effective tools in enhancing knowledge and skills. They can be considered as effective adjunct tools in medical education by considering their low expense, high versatility, reduced dependency on regional or site boundaries, online and offline, simulation, and flexible learning features of mobile apps.

Abstract:Effective healthcare relies on well-trained professionals, and the quality of their training is dependent on appropriate learning methods and assessment techniques. Gamification, the use of game mechanics in non-game environments, has emerged as a promising strategy in medical education. This review explores the applicability and effectiveness of gamification in obstetrics and gynecology education. Adhering to PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive search was conducted on PubMed, Google Scholar, Embase, and Medline databases from January to March 2023. The search terms included "medical students OR residents OR physicians OR midwives AND games OR educational games OR serious games AND gynecology OR obstetrics". The inclusion criteria encompassed studies published in English or German from 1990 to March 2023, focusing on gamification in gynecology and obstetrics education. Data extraction and analysis were structured using the PICOS framework. The review identified various studies demonstrating the effectiveness of gamification in obstetrics and gynecology education. Gaming shows like Jeopardy significantly boosted knowledge retention and engagement. VR technologies, such as Second Life, enhanced emergency and surgical training. Improvisational games improved empathy skills, though requiring reinforcement. Video games and laparoscopy trainers showed promise in enhancing surgical skills, with gamers performing better in initial tasks. Custom-developed games like Play and Learn for Surgeons significantly improved procedural skills. Gamification in obstetrics and gynecology education boosts learner engagement, knowledge retention, and practical skills. VR technologies and video games are effective for surgical training, while custom games can enhance specific procedural skills. Further research is needed to optimize and integrate gamification strategies into standard curricula, offering a modern approach to equip healthcare professionals with essential skills and knowledge. Eine gute Gesundheitsversorgung beruht auf gut ausgebildeten Fachkräften. Die Qualität ihrer Ausbildung hängt aber auch von den richtigen Lernmethoden und Beurteilungstechniken ab. Gamification, d. h. der Einsatz von Spielmechanismen in spielfremden Umgebungen, hat sich in der medizinischen Ausbildung als vielversprechender Ansatz entpuppt. Dieser Übersichtsartikel untersucht die Anwendbarkeit und Leistungsfähigkeit von Gamification in der geburtshilflichen und gynäkologischen Fachausbildung. Applying this strategy to an arbitrary set of states assigns to each input state a measurement outcome which, when realized, gives the highest possible confidence that the state was indeed present. The theoretically optimal measurement for discriminating between three equiprobable symmetric qubit states is implemented in a polarization-based free-space interferometer. The maximum confidence in the measurement result is 2/3. This is the first explicit demonstration that an improvement in the confidence over the optimal minimum error measurement is possible for linearly dependent states.

Abstract:The authors describe the use of intravenous sodium valproate (Depacon) to treat three geriatric inpatients: two acutely manic patients who refused oral medication and one dementia patient with agitation and dysphagia receiving end-of-life care for Alzheimer's disease.
