Abstract:With the accelerating process of global urbanization, environmental protection has become a hot issue for researchers, practitioners, and policy makers, with such questions as how to make urban transportation markedly sustainable to meet the pace of sustainable economic and social growth. This study visualizes and quantifies the extant publications on urban sustainable transportation research on Web of Science using CiteSpace for a wide range of research topics, including the intellectual structure, development, and evolution of urban sustainable transportation. First, this study presents the characteristics of a number of published papers in relevant fields and time stages, including publication in journals, co-occurrence of keywords, co-occurrence of disciplines and fields, and co-occurrence of the literature through network analysis. This study identifies the basic research contents and high-frequency knowledge contents of urban sustainable transportation. Second, this research analyzes the authors' cooperation, national cooperation, and research institute cooperation networks. This study identifies the most influential authors, research institutions, and countries. Lastly, this study identifies the research frontiers and trend themes from 1991 to 30 September 2022 through co-citation clustering and research on burst detection, a combination of bibliometric methods, and a systematic review. Accordingly, this study demonstrates the research progress in this field from the perspectives of multiple themes, such as land development and utilization, sustainable transportation systems, low-carbon paths, public transport, electric vehicles, sharing modes, traveler behavior, and smart cities. These aspects provide readers with a preliminary understanding of the development of urban sustainable transportation, indicating that multidisciplinary, multiprofessional, and multiangle cooperation and analysis will become the dominant trend in this field.

Progress and prospects in planning: A bibliometric review of literature in Urban Studies and Regional and Urban Planning, 1956–2022

Abstract:The global population has rapidly urbanized over the past century, and the urbanization rate is projected to reach about 70% by 2050. In line with these trends and the increasing recognition of the significance of cities in addressing local and global challenges, a lot of research has been published on urban studies and planning since the middle of the twentieth century. While the number of publications has been rapidly increasing over the past decades, there is still a lack of studies analyzing the field's knowledge structure and its evolution. To fill this gap, this study analyzes data related to more than 100,000 articles indexed under the "Urban Studies" and "Regional & Urban Planning" subject categories of the Web of Science. We conduct various analyses such as term co-occurrence, co-citation, bibliographic coupling, and citation analysis to identify the key defining thematic areas of the field and examine how they have evolved. We also identify key authors, journals, references, and organizations that have contributed more to the field's development. The analysis is conducted over five periods: 1956–1975 (the genesis period), 1976–1995 (economic growth and environmentalism), 1996–2015 (sustainable development and technological innovation), 2016–2019 (climate change and SDGs), and 2020 onwards (post-COVID urbanism). Four major thematic areas are identified: 1) socio-economic issues and inequalities, 2) economic growth and innovation, 3) urban ecology and land use planning, and 4) urban policy and governance and sustainability. The first two are recurring themes over different periods, while the latter two have gained currency over the past 2–3 decades following global events and policy frameworks related to global challenges like sustainability and climate change. Following the COVID-19 pandemic, issues related to smart cities, big data analytics, urban resilience, and governance have received particular attention. We found disproportionate contributions to the field from the Global North. Some countries from the Global South with rapid urbanization rates are underrepresented, which may have implications for the future of urbanization. We conclude the study by highlighting thematic gaps and other critical issues that need to be addressed by urban scholars to accelerate the transition toward sustainable and resilient cities.

Abstract:To better grasp the status quo of urban rail transit (URT) safety research and explore the knowledge base and hotspot trends, 1249 URT safety research papers from 1983–2018 were collected from the SCIE and SSCI databases of the WOS search platform as data samples. Co-occurrence analysis, burst analysis of keywords and co-citation analysis were adopted to analyze the current research situation of URT safety in the world by means of information visualization. The study found that risk analysis in the construction/operational phase, methods for predicting ground movements, and cause analyses of tunnel deformation and settlement are the knowledge bases in the field of URT safety research. Tunneling and Underground Space Technology, Safety Science, Atmospheric Environment, Lancet and Transportation Research Record are the core journals in the field. At present, the basic theory and research system of URT safety have been basically completed, but the research directions are too concentrated, and the frontier branches are too few. The research themes of URT safety were roughly grouped into three core paths: the “health risk” path, the “risk analysis – safety management” path and the “tunnel displacement/deformation” path. In the process of research and evolution, the research paths are refined step-by-step, and the research directions are transformed from macro to micro. The emergency evacuation of personnel in subway stations, the effects of particulate matter in subway air on human health and the use of computer technology for engineering optimization are the current frontiers of URT safety. URT safety research also tends toward risk analysis in the operational phase.

Experiences and Insights of Transportation Safety Planning in the United States

Abstract:With the increasingly serious traffic safety situation in China, it is both necessary and urgent to conduct transportation safety planning in order to improve the safety of residents during their travel. The transportation safety planning process involves developing transportation safety strategies, setting goals, establishing traffic safety performance measures, exploring quantitative analysis techniques, and providing safety improvement measures. To date, little attention has been paid to the urban traffic safety planning in China, while the United States has accumulated a wealth of experience in the matter. This paper investigated the traffic safety planning methods in the United States and analyzed the roles that agencies at the federal, state, and metropolitan level play in the process of traffic safety planning. The paper also summarized the areas of emphasis in traffic safety planning in five metropolitan areas. Basic processes for developing traffic safety plans and integrating safety planning into comprehensive transportation planning are also presented. Additionally, the latest traffic safety analysis technologies were investigated. Based on the current status of traffic safety in China, suggestions for development of a transportation safety plan are proposed.

Abstract:Maritime traffic risk is increasing rapidly with the growth of marine traffic volume and construction of marine facilities, water bridges, port development, marine wind farm, etc. Given this emerging trend, this paper presents a bibliometric analysis and mapping of the broad academic literature related to maritime traffic safety, focusing on the influences of international collaborations and knowledge sources on the developments of this research domain. To identify trends, patterns and the knowledge distribution of the research on maritime traffic safety, the visualisation of similarities (VOS) viewer software, the bibliometric analysis, and scientometric mapping of the literature have been performed from the perspectives of publication and citation distribution over time, leading authors, countries (regions), institutions, the corresponding collaboration networks, most cited publications and references, focused research fields and topics, research trend evolution over time, etc. The paper provides a comprehensive and quantitative overview and significant picture representation of the domain's leading and evolutionary trends by employing specific aforementioned bibliometric analysis factors. In addition, by reviewing the evolutionary trends of the journals and the proposed investigated factors, such as the influential works, main research topics, and the research frontiers, this paper reveals the scientific literature's main research objectives and directions that could be addressed and explored in future studies.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the bibliographic analyses and collaboration patterns in the field of pedestrian and evacuation dynamics (PED) research covering the period of 1991–2017. The statistic analyses of most productive authors, institutions, countries/regions, and cited papers, as well as keywords and their trends, are conducted based on the data set collected from the Web of Science. The most productive and high-impact authors, institutions, and countries are identified. The results of bibliographic analyses show that Europe researchers dominate and guide the research of PED in that it not only has the most papers but also has six out of the ten most-cited papers. Helbing Dirk is an influential author in the research of PED field in that he has five out of the ten most-cited papers. Chinese institutions account for 70% of the top 10 most productive institution and three among the top 5 ranks. Meanwhile, researchers from China and USA have published nearly half of the papers in this field. In addition, we generate four networks, i.e., coauthorship network, coinstitution network, cocountry/region network, and document cocitation network to analyze collaboration patterns and evolution of PED research at different levels. The software of Citespace is adopted to visualize the topological interactions among authors, institutions, and countries/regions as well as document cocitations. The degree, betweenness, burst, and PageRank are selected and measured as indicators to identify the key nodes. Finally, some future directions are put forward. The results of this paper provide a better understanding of patterns, trends, and other important factors as a basis for directing research activities, sharing knowledge, and collaborating in the field of PED research.

Abstract:Studies on human mobility have a long history with increasingly strong interdisciplinary connections across social science, environmental science, information and technology, computer science, engineering, and health science. However, what is lacking in the current research is a synthesis of the studies to identify the evolutional pathways and future research directions. To address this gap, we conduct a systematic review of human mobility-related studies published from 1990 to 2020. Drawing on the selected publications retrieved from the Web of Science, we provide a bibliometric analysis and network visualisation using CiteSpace and VOSviewer on the number of publications and year published, authors and their countries and afflictions, citations, topics, abstracts, keywords, and journals. Our findings show that human mobility-related studies have become increasingly interdisciplinary and multi-dimensional, which have been strengthened by the use of the so-called ‘big data’ from multiple sources, the development of computer technologies, the innovation of modelling approaches, and the novel applications in various areas. Based on our synthesis of the work by top cited authors we identify four directions for future research relating to data sources, modelling methods, applications, and technologies. We advocate for more in-depth research on human mobility using multi-source big data, improving modelling methods and integrating advanced technologies including artificial intelligence, and machine and deep learning to address real-world problems and contribute to social good.

Abstract:The rapid development of the Intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) industry has stimulated technological innovation in energy and communication while also highlighting the need for effective policies and road safety measures. Understanding and addressing road safety issues in the context of ICVs can contribute to ICV development and safe driving. This paper employs a knowledge mapping approach to scientifically and intuitively demonstrate research on the road safety issues of ICV over the last decade. By utilizing bibliometric tools such as CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and SciMAT, a total of 3661 original articles from the Web of Science are examined to explore three aspects. Firstly, the study investigates the collaborative relationships among authors and institutions within the industry. Secondly, it summarizes major research topics by analyzing and clustering keywords. Lastly, the paper identifies research hotspots and predicts future research directions. The findings reveal a dynamic field characterized by close collaboration among diverse institutions, with China and the United States emerging as the most active countries and mathematics and computer science journals becoming mainstream. According to three bibliometric tools, the research topics primarily revolve around three areas: Vehicular ad hoc Networks (VANET), intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and network security. Machine learning and V2X communication are predicted to be essential research topics in the next stage. Research on traffic accidents still has potential as the number of ICVs increases.

Abstract:Promoting sustainable mobility and planning walkable school zones is a pressing priority, as it involves the movement of Vulnerable Road Users (VRUs), such as children aged 5–19, along with adult companions, parents, and school staff or faculty. If these children have a safe walking experience today, they will grow up to become ambassadors of sustainable mobility. In this study, several school zone areas were considered in the capital city of India, Delhi. To conduct a comprehensive walkability analysis, three distinct methods were employed: a stakeholder survey, an evaluation of existing walkable corridors, and a microscopic simulation using the Social Force Model (SFM). The limited focus on school zone safety issues in developing nations presents a case for studying the specific concerns of the school zone pedestrians, aiming to assess the magnitude of the problem, provide design centric solutions, and pick an efficient solution for implementation. The results highlight the parameters influencing pedestrian safety in school zones and their effect on pedestrian attributes. This research work can be replicated for school zone safety assessments across the world. This study will benefit the policymakers, urban planners, local government agencies, and traffic management professionals by assisting them in evaluating the walkability of school zones and promoting sustainable mobility choices.

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. Roadside safety refers to the assessment and improvement of safety measures related to roadside environment, design, management, and objects. It encompasses factors such as road design, signage, markings, traffic control devices, and roadside features, and its goal is to reduce accident risk, minimize injuries, and enhance overall safety and comfort for road users. To comprehensively summarize roadside safety research progress, this review retrieved 1637 English papers published between 2000 and 2022, using the Web of Science Core Collection database. VOSviewer software was utilized to visualize and analyze the literature, conduct a situational analysis of publication, create knowledge maps of the main research hotspots and trends, and summarize research status, methods, systems, challenges, and trends in this field. Results showed an overall increasing trend in relevant research. The countries, institutions, and journals contributing most are the United States, the University of Nebraska, and the Transportation Research Record, respectively. Current research hotspots include evaluation of roadside safety and risk levels, factors influencing roadside safety and driving risks, drunk and drug-impaired driving in relation to roadside traffic accidents, frequency and severity of roadside accidents, and roadside safety assurance techniques and improvement strategies. Current modeling methods mainly consist of mathematical statistical analyses and data-driven modeling based on machine learning. Future research should focus on comprehensive quantitative mapping of influencing factors and evaluation criteria, establishing an active-guidance-based evaluation system and optimization strategy, improving the accuracy of computational problems and model construction, and exploring theories and technologies of intelligent transportation for roadside safety management and improvement.

This paper conducts a comprehensive investigation encompassing policy analysis, a literature review, concept definition, and quantitative analysis using CiteSpace from both domestic and international perspectives. Urban transportation data comprise multiple dimensions, such as infrastructure status, real-time monitoring, policy planning, and environmental assessment, which originate from various sources and stakeholders. Highly influential authors and active institutions, particularly in the USA, China, Canada, and England, contribute significantly to extensive and collaborative research. Key areas include intelligent transportation, traffic flow prediction, data fusion, and deep learning. Domestic research focuses on practical applications, while international studies delve into interdisciplinary research areas. With advancements in intelligent systems and big data technology, research has evolved from basic data collection to sophisticated methodologies, such as deep learning and spatiotemporal analysis, driving substantial progress. This paper concludes by recommending enhanced data integration, improved privacy and security, fostering big data and AI applications, facilitating policy formulation, and exploring innovative transportation modes, thereby underscoring the importance of urban transportation data in shaping the future of smart cities. Road Safety Evaluation Framework for Accessing Park Green Space Using Active Travel

Abstract:The COVID-19 pandemic has led to a burgeoning demand for active travel (walking or cycling), which is a healthy, pollution-free, and affordable daily transportation mode. Park green space (PGS), as an open natural landscape, have become a popular destination for active travel trips in metropolitan areas. Pedestrians and cyclists are often at high crash risk when exposed to complicated traffic environments in urban areas. Therefore, this study aims to propose a safety assessment framework for evaluating active travel traffic safety (ATTS) near PGS from the perspective of urban planning and exploring the effect of the point-of-interest (POI) aggregation phenomenon on ATTS. First, links between ATTS and the environment variables were investigated and integrated into the framework using the catastrophe model. Second, the relationship between the POI density and ATTS was investigated using three spatial regression models. Results in the Wuhan Metropolitan Area as a case study have shown that (1) the population density, road density, nighttime brightness, and vegetation situation near PGS have pronounced effects on ATTS; (2) pedestrians near PGS enjoy safer road facilities than cyclists. Active travel traffic near PGS requires more attention than non-park neighborhoods; (3) among four park categories, using active travel to access theme parks is the safest; and (4) SEM has the best fit for POI cluster research. Increases in leisure facility density and residence density may lead to deterioration and improvement in ATTS safety levels near PGSs, respectively. The safety framework can be applied in other regions because the selected environment indicators are common and accessible. The findings offer appropriate traffic planning strategies to improve the safety of active travel users when accessing PGS.

Abstract:As a characteristic representative of the new generation of vehicles, autonomous driving is expected to improve people's driving experience. The study on traffic accident of autonomous vehicles (AVs) helps provide suggestions for autonomous driving safety from mul-tiple disciplines and perspectives, and provide support for formulating traffic accident treatment schemes. Knowledge mapping, as a cutting-edge research method in bibliometrics, scientifically and objectively displays the relevant research status using visual means. This paper uses CiteSpace 6.1.r3 to analyze 5068 related literature on the Web of Science database from 1991 to 2022 and finds out major thematic clusters, important documents and representative journals according to citation frequency. The results show that research on traffic accidents involving AVs focuses on accident preventing technologies, including how to avoid collisions, track lane-position, and enhance vehicle-to -everything (V2X) communication. This paper extracts the mean research topics and key points involved in the field and illustrates journals related to AVs and traffic accidents, which provides guidance for subsequent researchers to carry out in-depth research and contribute their papers. Popular journals are in disciplines of mathematics, systems, computer, economics, and social science. This paper also suggests scholars to consider the aspects of scene reconstruction, cause analysis, and injury of vulnerable road users, so as to investigate traffic accidents and put forward effective treatment schemes to reduce AV accidents, and ultimately improve road safety.(c) 2023 Periodical Offices of Chang'an University. Abstract:The study of walkability is of great significance to the construction of healthy cities. In this paper, taking 1283 articles of walkability, which were included in Web of Science, as the research object. This paper adopts to analysis the research progress by using the method of scientometrics and knowledge networks analysis. Objectively and systematically analyze the research progress of walkability abroad from the aspects of publication overview, knowledge foundation, research direction and hot spots, etc. It is found that foreign researches on walkability mainly include three core directions: walkability and physical activity, walkability evaluation, walkability and urban design. Among them, walkability and physical activity orientation have been studied from various perspectives, such as various groups, various environmental types, different behavioral patterns and various chronic diseases. With the increasingly prominent urbanization problems and the rapid development of new technologies, multiple data, new methods and interdisciplinary cooperation will actively promote the vigorous development of walking suitability research.

Socially acceptable route planning and trajectory behavior analysis of personal mobility device for mobility management with improved sensing

Abstract:In urban cities, with increasing acceptability of shared spaces used by pedestrians and personal mobility devices (PMDs), there is need for pragmatic socially ac-ceptable path planning and navigation management policies. Hence, we propose a socially acceptable global route planner and assess the legibility of the resulting global route. Our approach proposed for choosing global route avoids streets penetrating shared spaces and main routes with high probability of dense usage. The experimental study shows that socially acceptable routes can be effectively found with an average of 10 % increment of route length with optimal hyperpa-rameters. This helps PMDs to reach the goal while taking a socially acceptable and safe route with minimal interaction of different PMDs and pedestrians. When PMDs interact with pedestrians and other types of PMDs in shared spaces, mi-cro-mobility simulations are of prime usage for acceptable and safe navigation policy. Social force models being state of the art for pedestrian simulation are cal-ibrated for capturing random movements of pedestrian behavior. Social force model with calibration can imitate the required behavior of PMDs in a pedestrian mix navigation scheme. Based on calibrated models, simulations on shared space links and gate structures are performed to assist policies related to deciding wait-ing and stopping time. Also, based on simulated PMDs interaction with pedestri-ans, location data with finer resolution can be obtained if the resolution of GPS sensor is 0.2 m or less. This will help in formalizing better modelling and hence better micro-mobility policies.

Abstract:This study aims to enhance people's mobility in the context of mobility restrictions in the Palestinian territories, West Bank. It aims to develop a comprehensive route planning model that prioritises safety and optimises travel time while also considering sustainability issues. Unlike previous research, which has often focused solely on traffic crashes and physical road considerations in safety route planning, this study addresses the gap by developing a comprehensive model that integrates new risk criteria including mobility restrictions and violent events. The methodology involves historical and real-time data collection and processing, machine learning-based travel time prediction, and route optimisation using Dijkstra's algorithm. The results highlight the significant impact of violent incidents on comprehensive risk scores, offering insights for proactive, sustainable measures. The waiting time prediction model performs strongly, with (R-squared) R2 values ranging from 80% to 92%. Abstract:Abstract This article aims at identification of the main trends in scientific literature characterising urban smart mobility, on the basis of bibliometric analysis of articles published in the ISI Web of Science and Scopus databases. The study period was set from 2000 to 2017. Authors used a basic technique of the bibliometric analysis of the scientific literature characterising urban smart mobility with the support of the VOSviewer software. The analysis included the number of publications, citation analysis, research area analysis and the most frequent keywords. The analysis led to taking notice of current research trends dealing with the urban smart mobility. The core of the paper is a theoretical framework of research trends, which was developed through a review of scientific literature. The result of this paper is a map showing the existing relationships between key terms, research areas characterising publications dealing with the urban smart mobility and intelligent transport system (ITS). “Smart city” is probably the most “in vogue”, debated and analysed concept among researchers and administrative/ governmental representatives from all over the world. This multidimensional concept is mainly based on smart technology structured around few major components: smart mobility, smart environment, smart governance, smart living, and everything that targets the people’s wellbeing. This work focuses on a hot topic – mobility because of its significant impact on the environment by pollution as well as living by requiring intelligent transport systems.
Bibliometric Analysis and Research Trend Forecast of Healthy Urban Planning for 40 Years (1981–2020)

Abstract:The history of healthy city planning can be traced back to the beginning of the 19th century. Since the industrialization period, the harsh living conditions of cities and the outbreak of infectious diseases have promoted the coordinated development of urban planning and public health, and people have gradually realized the importance of urban design and planning to the health of residents. After searching keywords related to health city and urban planning, and excluding repeated, non-English, and unrelated papers, this work retrieved 2582 documents as the basic data (timespan is 1 January 1981–31 December 2020, retrieval time is 28 January 2021). Additionally, CiteSpace was used to analyze document co-citation, cooperation network, and topic co-occurrence. Subsequently, random forest algorithm was used to predict the probability of citation. Overall, this work found that the hot spots of healthy urban planning are physical activity, green space, urban green space, and mental health. It also shows the diversification of themes and the development trend of cross-fields in the field of healthy urban planning. In addition, the article found that two factors, namely, the average number of citations of the first author and whether the article belongs to the field of environmental research, have a great impact on the number of citations of the article. This work is of practical significance to relevant practitioners and researchers, because it provides guidance for hot topics and future research directions in the field of healthy urban planning.
