Abstract:The goal of this study is to provide an overview of previous research that investigated pedestrian violation behaviour, with a focus on identifying the contributing factors of such behaviour, its impact on pedestrian safety, the mitigation strategies, the limitations of current studies, and the future research directions. To that end, the Latent Dirichlet Allocation (LDA) text mining method was applied to extract a comprehensive list of studies that were conducted during the past 21 years related to pedestrian violation behaviours. Using the extracted studies, a multi-sectional literature review was developed to provide a comprehensive understanding of the different aspects related to pedestrian violations. Afterward, a meta-analysis was undertaken, using the studies that reported quantitative results, in order to obtain the average impact of the different contributing factors on the frequency of pedestrian violations. The study found that pedestrian violations are one of the hazardous behaviours that contribute to both the frequency and severity of pedestrian-vehicle collisions. According to the literature, the waiting time at the curbside, traffic volume, walking speed, pedestrian distraction, the presence of bus stops and schools, and the presence of on-street parking are among the key factors that increase the likelihood of pedestrian violations. The study has also reviewed a wide range of strategies that can be used to mitigate violations and reduce the safety consequences of such behaviour, including simple engineering-based countermeasures, enforcement, solutions that rely on advanced in-vehicle technologies, and infrastructure connectivity features, educational programs, and public campaigns.

Abstract:Maritime traffic risk is increasing rapidly with the growth of marine traffic volume and construction of marine facilities, water bridges, port development, marine wind farm, etc. Given this emerging trend, this paper presents a bibliometric analysis and mapping of the broad academic literature related to maritime traffic safety, focusing on the influences of international collaborations and knowledge sources on the developments of this research domain. To identify trends, patterns and the knowledge distribution of the research on maritime traffic safety, the visualisation of similarities (VOS) viewer software, the bibliometric analysis, and scientometric mapping of the literature have been performed from the perspectives of publication and citation distribution over time, leading authors, countries (regions), institutions, the corresponding collaboration networks, most cited publications and references, focused research fields and topics, research trend evolution over time, etc. The paper provides a comprehensive and quantitative overview and significant picture representation of the domain's leading and evolutionary trends by employing specific aforementioned bibliometric analysis factors. In addition, by reviewing the evolutionary trends of the journals and the proposed investigated factors, such as the influential works, main research topics, and the research frontiers, this paper reveals the scientific literature's main research objectives and directions that could be addressed and explored in future studies.

Abstract:This paper focuses on the bibliographic analyses and collaboration patterns in the field of pedestrian and evacuation dynamics (PED) research covering the period of 1991–2017. The statistic analyses of most productive authors, institutions, countries/regions, and cited papers, as well as keywords and their trends, are conducted based on the data set collected from the Web of Science. The most productive and high-impact authors, institutions, and countries are identified. The results of bibliographic analyses show that Europe researchers dominate and guide the research of PED in that it not only has the most papers but also has six out of the ten most-cited papers. Helbing Dirk is an influential author in the research of PED field in that he has five out of the ten most-cited papers. Chinese institutions account for 70% of the top 10 most productive institution and three among the top 5 ranks. Meanwhile, researchers from China and USA have published nearly half of the papers in this field. In addition, we generate four networks, i.e., coauthorship network, coinstitution network, cocountry/region network, and document cocitation network to analyze collaboration patterns and evolution of PED research at different levels. The software of Citespace is adopted to visualize the topological interactions among authors, institutions, and countries/regions as well as document cocitations. The degree, betweenness, burst, and PageRank are selected and measured as indicators to identify the key nodes. Finally, some future directions are put forward. The results of this paper provide a better understanding of patterns, trends, and other important factors as a basis for directing research activities, sharing knowledge, and collaborating in the field of PED research.

Factors determining the site of synthesis of poliovirus proteins: the early attachment of virus particles to endoplasmic membranes.

Abstract:Cytoplasmic extracts of HeLa cells made 1 to 2 h after infection with radioactive poliovirus contained 150-S virus particles and 130-S, perhaps partially disrupted, particles. The latter were resistant to RNase but sensitive to dodecylsulphate. Both particles were associated with fast sedimenting material from which they could be released by deoxycholate, but not by EDTA. In isopycnic gradients of sucrose in D2O the labelled particles formed a sharp band coincident with membrane-bound ribosomes at a density of 1.23 g cm-3. It is suggested that attachment of virus particles to endoplasmic reticulum may be an early stage in the infectious cycle, determining the site of subsequent steps. The inhibition of cellular protein synthesis that develops during infection affects membrane-bound as well as free polysomes and therefore does not determine the membrane-association of viral protein synthesis.

Abstract:Fifty years of evolution of the transportation field is revisited at a macro scale using scientometric analysis of all publications in all 39 journals indexed in the category of Transportation by the Web of Science. The size of the literature is estimated to have reached 50,000 documents. At the highest level of aggregation, four major divisions of the literature are differentiated through these analyses, namely (i) network analysis and traffic flow, (ii) economics of transportation and logistics, (iii) travel behaviour, and (iv) road safety. Influential and emerging authors of each division are identified. Temporal trends in transportation research are also investigated via document co-citation analysis. This analysis identifies various major streams of transportation research while determining their approximate time of emergence and duration of activity. It documents topics that have been most trendy at any period of time during the last fifty years. Three clusters associated with the travel behaviour division (collectively embodying topics of land-use, active transportation, residential self-selection, traveller experience/satisfaction, social exclusion and transport/spatial equity), one cluster of statistical modelling of road accidents, and a cluster of network modelling linked predominantly to the notion of macroscopic fundamental diagram demonstrate characteristics of being current hot topics of the field. Three smaller clusters linked predominantly to electric mobility and autonomous/automated vehicles show characteristics of being emerging hot topics. A cluster labelled shared mobility is the youngest emerging cluster. Influential articles within each cluster of references are identified. Additional outcomes are the determination the influential outsiders of the transportation field.
A systematic review of contemporary safety management research: a multi-level approach to identifying trending domains in the construction industry

Abstract:Safety management research in construction is pervasive, therefore, a systematic review and a bibliometric mapping process that provides an overview of how recent mainstream research topics are conceptually structured is timely. Undertaking systematic mapping, contemporaneous with a scoping review of construction safety management research, can contribute to a better understanding of research outcomes and predominant topics. This study employed VOSviewer as a bibliometric tool to identify co-author citations, as well as the co-occurrence of key terms within the title, abstract and keywords of the articles. A total of 180 representative studies published in 21 peer-reviewed journals between January 2010 and November 2021 were analysed. A systematic literature review identified a significant focus on conceptualizing safety climate and safety behaviour with a growing interest in applying advanced technologies for improved safety management. Two perspectives were recognized in safety research, i.e. process-driven and people-driven, with the former focussing on accident causation while the latter on underlying the active role of workers' involvement in safety outcomes. An in-depth discussion of the findings revealed seven trending research domains: safety systems; safety skills; accident causation; safety leadership and communications; safety behaviour and attitude; safety climate and culture; and practices for improving safety performance. This review identified an emerging interest in seeking effective leadership styles and psychological interventions to promote safety culture and behaviour. In terms of practical implications, this study found opportunities to address the gap between theory and practice by adopting systems thinking and using IT for improving safety performance in construction projects.

Abstract:The escalating urbanisation fuelled by population growth and economic expansion has triggered a notable surge in vehicular and pedestrian traffic, amplifying their interaction. Nonetheless, inadequate research, investment, and prioritisation have engendered inefficient pedestrian crossing infrastructures. This study endeavours to bridge this gap by crafting tailored warrants suited to Indian traffic dynamics, facilitating the implementation of pedestrian crossing facilities. Employing PV2 threshold value analysis, this study scrutinises pedestrian behavioural traits, such as gap acceptance and waiting time. Additionally, K-means clustering analysis delineates distinct levels of severity (LOSe), grounded in variables encompassing vehicular and pedestrian flow, gap acceptance, and waiting time. By establishing the nexus between vehicular volume and gap acceptance and vehicular volume and waiting time, a spectrum of PV2 threshold values is delineated. These LOS categories guide the selection of pedestrian facilities, ensuring secure pedestrian–vehicle interactions. Leveraging PV2 charts and vehicular volume assessments, our research identifies fitting pedestrian crossing infrastructures, thereby bolstering road safety for pedestrians and vehicles, underpinning sustainable urban mobility.

Progress and prospects in crowd safety evacuation research in China

Abstract:China has a population of 1.4 billion, ranking first in the world. With the increase in China's economic development and population, the construction of various types of buildings in China is also increasing, and associated safety hazards are gradually increasing. Therefore, it is necessary to study the safe evacuation of people inside and outside the building in emergency situations. In recent years, some scholars have used the traditional statistical method of literature review to analyze the research frontiers in the field of safety evacuation, but few scholars have used bibliometric methods to analyze and review the current situation of research in this field. Therefore, this paper adopts the analysis method combining bibliometrics and traditional literature review to summarize the research status of crowd evacuation published by Chinese scholars in the Web of Science core database, and uses VOSviewer to analyze the authors, institutions, and keywords of the literature search results, so as to identify their research hotspots. The results show that the last three years have been the peak period of crowd evacuation studies, with many disciplines involved in this field and they are closely related, led by the number of papers related to architecture. Simulation, model, behavior, among others, have been the most used keywords in this research field, and the research on path planning and exit selection behavior has also increased significantly. According to the keyword analysis, three hot spots of safety evacuation research, namely large-scale group evacuation, evacuation path planning and evacuation exit selection are analyzed in detail.
Comparative analysis of middle ear immune response and micronutrient level between mucoid and purulent otitis media.

Abstract:OBJECTIVE To determine the differences in the outcome of treatment, the middle ear immune response, and micronutrient status between patients with purulent (POM) and mucoid (MOM) otitis media. DESIGN Children with acute otitis media were recruited, treated, and followed up for between 6 and 10 months. The sera and middle ear secretion (MES) were analyzed for immunoglobulins and zinc using enzyme-linked immunoassay and flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry, respectively. The parameters were compared with selected healthy controls. SUBJECTS There were 399 participants: 228 children with acute otitis media selected using the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery criteria and 171 healthy controls, with ages ranging between 6 months and 9 years (mean 7 years; SD 2.32 years). RESULT POM accounted for 126 of 228 patients, and MOM accounted for 102. The chronicity of otitis media (using the 3-month duration cutoff) was seen in 87 subjects (46%): 31 of 126 POM subjects and 56 of 102 MOM subjects (p = .002). The serum IgA to IgG ratios were 0.03 and 0.07 among POM and MOM, respectively; however, the MES IgA to IgG ratios were higher, 0.3 and 0.2, for POM and MOM, respectively. This gives a MES to serum ratio of IgA to IgG value of 0.3 to 0.03 (10) for POM and 0.2 to 0.07 (2.67) for MOM, which showed a significant statistical difference (p = .001). The MES to serum ratios of IgE were 0.89 and 1.3 among POM and MOM, respectively (p = .03). There was a significant difference in the serum IgG (p = .019), serum zinc (p = .009), and MES IgA (p = .028) and IgG (p = .01). CONCLUSION Chronicity was greater in MOM than in POM; POM had a higher middle ear immune response (measured by the MES to serum ratio of IgA to IgG) and serum zinc than MOM but a lower MES IgE.

Traffic collisions are incidents with high fatality rate which generate billions of US dollars of loss worldwide each year. Post-collision scene reconstruction, which involves knowledge of multiple disciplines, is an important approach to restore the traffic collision and infer the cause of it. This paper uses software CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and SciMAT to conduct a visualization study of knowledge mapping on the literature of traffic collision scene reconstruction from 2001 to 2021 based on the Web of Science database. Knowledge mapping is a cutting-edge research method in scientometric, which has been widely applied in medicine and informatics. Compared with traditional literature review, knowledge mapping with visual techniques identifies hot keywords and key literature in the field more scientifically, and displays them in schematic diagrams intuitively which allows to further predict potential hotspots. A total of 803 original papers are retrieved to analyze and discuss the evolution of the field in the past 20 years, from macro to micro, in term of background information, popular themes, and knowledge structure. Results indicate the number of publications in this field is limited, and collaborations among authors and among institutions are insufficient. In the meantime, mappings imply the top three hot themes being scene reconstruction, computer technology, and injuries. The introduction of AI related technologies, such as neural networks and genetic algorithms, into collision reconstruction would be a potential research direction. Abstract:The built environment and walking are hot topics in human settlement environment and health. It is essential for both built environment and walking research to clarify the knowledge base, development context, and cooperation network, and to explore the cutting-edge hot spots and development trends. We collected research data from the Web of Science core collection database. This study used analysis techniques including country and institution cooperation networks, keyword co-occurrences, burst keywords, reference co-citations, and cluster analysis to systematically analyze the built environment and walking research. The study found that research on built environment and walking was developed in the United States, Australia, and Canada. Then, it was carried out in Asian countries. Current research on the built environment and walking has multiple research themes. Among them, walkability is a common content covered by various research themes. Research based on street view environment is the latest hot research and there are still a lot of gaps in combining traditional topics with it. This research provides new directions and theoretical references for the built environment and walking research scholars and policymakers.

Abstract:It is well known that safety climate (SC) has paramount significance in safety science and accident prevention. In this paper, a bibliometric data mining is conducted to systematically review the research domain of SC. Overall, 1624 documents on SC are obtained, covering 4830 authors, 473 journals, 89 countries/regions, and 1766 institutions between 1980 and 2021. SC has obtained increasing attention since the number of publications related to SC grew from 1 in 1980 to 188 in 2020. Based on the bibliometric data, network analysis was carried out to understand the relationship among different countries/regions, authors, and keywords. Safety Science, Journal of Safety Research, and Accident Analysis and Prevention are the major sources of SC publications, and the USA, Australia, and China lead scientific collaboration production on SC research. Then, text mining of publication keywords is used to identify the hot topics and the evolution of mainstream research over time in the SC domain. The dominant topics in SC research include culture, performance, safety behavior, and model. Meanwhile, the limitations of past research on SC are analyzed and the differences between SC and safety culture are discussed. Moreover, recommendations for future research on SC are also given based on the results of bibliometric analysis and existing literature reviews.

Problems and Perspectives in Management

Abstract:Despite the continuous improvement of safety standards in the construction industry, this sphere remains one of the most hazardous sectors, and safety management is becoming a crucial determinant of effective operation at construction sites. The aim of this study is to identify the essential contextual, evolutionary-chronological, and geographical-industrial scientific landscape of the development of safety management in the construction industry through comprehensive bibliometric analysis. More than 15,000 articles indexed by Scopus from around the world from 2000 to 2023 were analyzed using the VOSviewer tool, filtered by keywords such as “construction,” “safety,” and “management.” The research revealed the intensification of publishing activity since 2012 (with peak growth in 2012, 2020, and 2022). The leading scientists are from China, the United States, and the United Kingdom (e.g., Chinese scientists make up 26.1% of all scholars). The majority of papers are in the field of engineering. Priority areas of research include safety climate, safety behavior, and building information modeling. The closest connections of construction safety management are with the study of professional risks, safety techniques, and quality control. The evolution of research focuses on “human health and safety-risks-digital security systems.” In general, the findings of this study provide a foundation for future research aimed at enhancing safety management in the construction field, potentially increasing worker protection and technical operational efficiency.

Abstract:The rapid development of the Intelligent connected vehicle (ICV) industry has stimulated technological innovation in energy and communication while also highlighting the need for effective policies and road safety measures. Understanding and addressing road safety issues in the context of ICVs can contribute to ICV development and safe driving. This paper employs a knowledge mapping approach to scientifically and intuitively demonstrate research on the road safety issues of ICV over the last decade. By utilizing bibliometric tools such as CiteSpace, VOSviewer, and SciMAT, a total of 3661 original articles from the Web of Science are examined to explore three aspects. Firstly, the study investigates the collaborative relationships among authors and institutions within the industry. Secondly, it summarizes major research topics by analyzing and clustering keywords. Lastly, the paper identifies research hotspots and predicts future research directions. The findings reveal a dynamic field characterized by close collaboration among diverse institutions, with China and the United States emerging as the most active countries and mathematics and computer science journals becoming mainstream. According to three bibliometric tools, the research topics primarily revolve around three areas: Vehicular ad hoc Networks (VANET), intelligent transportation systems (ITS), and network security. Machine learning and V2X communication are predicted to be essential research topics in the next stage. Research on traffic accidents still has potential as the number of ICVs increases.

Status, Challenges, and Trends of International Research on Roadside Safety

Abstract:Transportation Research Record, Ahead of Print. Roadside safety refers to the assessment and improvement of safety measures related to roadside environment, design, management, and objects. It encompasses factors such as road design, signage, markings, traffic control devices, and roadside features, and its goal is to reduce accident risk, minimize injuries, and enhance overall safety and comfort for road users. To comprehensively summarize roadside safety research progress, this review retrieved 1637 English papers published between 2000 and 2022, using the Web of Science Core Collection database. VOSviewer software was utilized to visualize and analyze the literature, conduct a situational analysis of publication, create knowledge maps of the main research hotspots and trends, and summarize research status, methods, systems, challenges, and trends in this field. Results showed an overall increasing trend in relevant research. The countries, institutions, and journals contributing most are the United States, the University of Nebraska, and the Transportation Research Record, respectively. Current research hotspots include evaluation of roadside safety and risk levels, factors influencing roadside safety and driving risks, drunk and drug-impaired driving in relation to roadside traffic accidents, frequency and severity of roadside accidents, and roadside safety assurance techniques and improvement strategies. Current modeling methods mainly consist of mathematical statistical analyses and data-driven modeling based on machine learning. Future research should focus on comprehensive quantitative mapping of influencing factors and evaluation criteria, establishing an active-guidance-based evaluation system and optimization strategy, improving the accuracy of computational problems and model construction, and exploring theories and technologies of intelligent transportation for roadside safety management and improvement.
The safety margin and perceived safety of pedestrians at unmarked roadway

Abstract:Many pedestrians cross out of crosswalks (i.e., unmarked roadway) in developing countries, but researches about their safety are under reported. This study explored safety related factors and their casual relations at unmarked roadway. Videos of 254 pedestrians' crossing process were analyzed objectively on safety and evaluated subjectively on perceived safety. The two safety indexes are consistent on important factors, with higher running frequency reduce safety while bigger group size increase safety. The two factors had contrary effect on pedestrian speed, which is positively related with safety. Higher looking frequency before crossing also enhance safety, partly by reducing running frequency and increasing going backwards with its planning nature. Longer waiting time before crossing can facilitate this planning behavior while at the same time leads to bigger group size. Buses are safer than cars, but they are not perceived as safer. In situations where only some vehicles yield, yielding ones bring danger due to sight blocking of unyielding ones in adjacent lanes. These findings can be applied to the design of intelligent transportation systems and the education of drivers and pedestrians to improve safety. (C) 2011 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
Analysis of long-term observational data on pedestrian road crossings at unmarked locations

Abstract:Crossing roads is dangerous for pedestrians. Roads can be crossed at controlled locations, where traffic lights or zebra crossings regulate the behaviour of all traffic participants, or at unmarked locations, where pedestrians typically do not have priority. Technological advances mean observational data on pedestrian road crossing behaviour from public roads can now be recorded almost continuously. Here, we report on such a data collection campaign in Bristol, UK. We record the movement paths of traffic participants within the field of view of commercial camera-based sensors at two unmarked crossing locations. Between January and April 2022, we detect over 30,000 pedestrian road crossings across the two locations. We first explore the time series of hourly crossing counts, finding pronounced and regular temporal patterns that differ between locations. We then investigate the relationship of crossing numbers with road traffic characteristics and extraneous factors, such as university term dates, confirming previous findings on traffic volume reducing crossing frequency and the differences between our study sites. Finally, by studying the timing and distance between consecutive crossings we find evidence for social crossing behaviour, such as groups crossing synchronously. In addition to the specific findings on road crossing behaviour of our study, a key contribution of our work is a case study for how to work with large-volume, low-fidelity observational data on pedestrian behaviour that is becoming increasingly available and has the potential to transform pedestrian road safety research.

Abstract:The study of walkability is of great significance to the construction of healthy cities. In this paper, taking 1283 articles of walkability, which were included in Web of Science, as the research object. This paper adopts to analysis the research progress by using the method of scientometrics and knowledge networks analysis. Objectively and systematically analyze the research progress of walkability abroad from the aspects of publication overview, knowledge foundation, research direction and hot spots, etc. It is found that foreign researches on walkability mainly include three core directions: walkability and physical activity, walkability evaluation, walkability and urban design. Among them, walkability and physical activity orientation have been studied from various perspectives, such as various groups, various environmental types, different behavioral patterns and various chronic diseases. With the increasingly prominent urbanization problems and the rapid development of new technologies, multiple data, new methods and interdisciplinary cooperation will actively promote the vigorous development of walking suitability research.

Do footbridge and underpass improve pedestrian safety? A Hong Kong case study using three-dimensional digital map of pedestrian network

Abstract:Hong Kong is a compact city with high activity and travel intensity. In the past decades, many footbridges and underpasses were installed to reduce the pedestrian-vehicle conflicts on urban roads. However, it is rare that the effects of configuration of pedestrian network on pedestrian crashes are investigated. In Hong Kong, many footbridges and underpasses are connected to major transport hubs and commercial building development and become parts of giant elevated and underground walkway systems. It is challenging to characterize such a complicated pedestrian network. In this study, a three-dimensional digital map is applied to estimate the connectivity and accessibility of pedestrian network, and measure the relationship between pedestrian network characteristics and pedestrian safety at the macroscopic level. Hence, the effects of footbridge and underpass on pedestrian safety are examined. For example, comprehensive built environment, pedestrian network, traffic, and crash data are aggregated to 379 grids (0.5 km × 0.5 km). Then, multivariate Poisson lognormal regression approach is applied to model fatal and severe injury (FSI) and slight injury pedestrian crashes, with which the effects of unobserved heterogeneity, spatial correlation, and correlation between crash counts are accounted. Results indicate that population density, traffic volume, walking trip, footpath density, node density, number of vertices per footpath segment, bus stop, metro exit, residential area, commercial area, and government and utility area are positively associated with pedestrian crashes. In contrast, average gradient, accessibility of footbridge, accessibility of underpass, and number of crossings per road segment are negatively associated with pedestrian crashes. In other word, pedestrian safety would be improved when footbridge and underpass are more accessible. Findings have implications for the design and planning of pedestrian network to promote walkability and improve pedestrian safety.
