Abstract:Digital dermatitis (DD) is a bovine claw disease responsible for ulcerative lesions on the coronary band of the foot. It causes significant animal welfare and economic losses to the cattle industry. Early detection of DD can lead to prompt treatment and decrease lameness. Current detection and staging methods require a trained individual to evaluate the interdigital space on each foot for clinical signs of DD. Computer vision (CV), a type of artificial intelligence for image analysis, has demonstrated promising results on object detection tasks. However, farms require robust solutions that can be deployed in harsh conditions including dust, debris, humidity, precipitation, other equipment issues. The study aims to train, deploy, and benchmark DD detection models on edge devices. Images were collected from commercial dairy farms with the camera facing the interdigital space on the plantar surface of the foot. Images were scored for M-stages of DD by a trained investigator using the M-stage DD classification system. Models were trained to detect and score DD lesions and embedded on an edge device. The Tiny YOLOv4 model deployed on a CV specific integrated camera module connected to a single board computer achieved a mean average precision (mAP) of 0.895, an overall prediction accuracy of 0.873, and a Cohen's kappa of 0.830 for agreement between the computer vision model and the trained investigator. The model reached a final inference speed of 40 frames per second (FPS) and ran stably without any interruptions. The CV model was able to detect DD lesions on an edge device with high performance and speed. The CV tool can be used for early detection and prompt treatment of DD in dairy cows. Real-time detection of DD on edge device will improve health outcomes, while simultaneously decreasing labor costs. We demonstrate that the deployed model can be a low-power and portable solution for real-time detection of DD on dairy farms. This result is a step towards applying CV algorithms to veterinary medicine and implementing real-time detection of health outcomes in precision farming.
Comparative analysis of computer vision algorithms for the real-time detection of digital dermatitis in dairy cows

Abstract:Digital dermatitis (DD) is a bovine claw disease responsible for ulcerative lesions on the planar aspect of the hoof. DD is associated with massive herd outbreaks of lameness and influences cattle welfare and production. Early detection of DD can lead to prompt treatment and decrease lameness. Computer vision (CV) provides a unique opportunity to improve early detection. The study aims to train and compare applications for the real-time detection of DD in dairy cows. Eight CV models were trained for detection and scoring, compared using performance metrics and inference time, and the best model was automated for real-time detection using images and video. Images were collected from commercial dairy farms while facing the interdigital space on the plantar surface of the foot. Images were scored for M-stages of DD by a trained investigator using the M-stage DD classification system with distinct labels for hyperkeratosis (H) and proliferations (P). Two sets of images were compiled: the first dataset (Dataset 1) containing 1,177 M0/M4H and 1,050 M2/M2P images and the second dataset (Dataset 2) containing 240 M0, 17 M2, 51 M2P, 114 M4H, and 108 M4P images. Models were trained to detect and score DD lesions and compared for precision, recall, and mean average precision (mAP) in addition to inference time in frame per second (FPS). Seven of the nine CV models performed well compared to the ground truth of labeled images using Dataset 1. The six models, Faster R-CNN, Cascade R-CNN, YOLOv3, Tiny YOLOv3, YOLOv4, Tiny YOLOv4, and YOLOv5s achieved an mAP between 0.964 and 0.998, whereas the other two models, SSD and SSD Lite, yielded an mAP of 0.371 and 0.387 respectively. Overall, YOLOv4, Tiny YOLOv4, and YOLOv5s outperformed all other models with almost perfect precision, perfect recall, and a higher mAP. Tiny YOLOv4 outperformed all other models with respect to inference time at 333 FPS, followed by YOLOv5s at 133 FPS and YOLOv4 at 65 FPS. YOLOv4 and Tiny YOLOv4 performed better than YOLOv5s compared to the ground truth using Dataset 2. YOLOv4 and Tiny YOLOv4 yielded a similar mAP of 0.896 and 0.895, respectively. However, Tiny YOLOv4 achieved both higher precision and recall compared to YOLOv4. Finally, Tiny YOLOv4 was able to detect DD lesions on a commercial dairy farm with high performance and speed. The proposed CV tool can be used for early detection and prompt treatment of DD in dairy cows. This result is a step towards applying CV algorithms to veterinary medicine and implementing real-time DD detection on dairy farms.

Abstract:Dogs are beloved pets and loyal companions to millions of people worldwide. Unfortunately, dogs can also suffer from a variety of skin diseases that can cause discomfort, pain, and even life-threatening complications. Some dog skin diseases can be transmitted to humans through direct contact. Early detection and treatment of these skin diseases are crucial for the health and well-being of dogs and humans. Our project aims to provide a quick and precise approach to identifying various types of skin diseases in dogs. To expedite the process of identifying and diagnosing infections related to canine interaction, we plan to utilize a machine-learning model. This approach aims to reduce the time and expertise required for accurate and consistent diagnosis, which can otherwise be challenging and time-consuming. Two models, InceptionV3 and MobileNetV2, were utilized and compared in our implementation. In the case of InceptionV3, a training accuracy of 0.99 and a validation accuracy of 0.98 were achieved. For MobileNetV2, we attained a validation accuracy of 96 and a categorical accuracy of 97. Abstract:A method to reduce the size of a conventional LPDA is discussed. T-top loaded dipoles are implemented in the array instead of λ/2 dipole elements to achieve a reduced size and maintain co-planar geometry. Each dipole in the array is reduced in size by 50 % (kr = 0.8). The simulated S11 of the size-reduced LPDA is maintained below -10 dB across the conventional LPDA's bandwidth from 35 MHz to 60 MHz. The size-reduced LPDA has directive realized gain reaching 9.5 dBi.
Deep learning-based ultrasonographic classification of canine chronic kidney disease

Abstract:Objectives: In veterinary medicine, attempts to apply artificial intelligence (AI) to ultrasonography have rarely been reported, and few studies have investigated the value of AI in ultrasonographic diagnosis. This study aimed to develop a deep learning-based model for classifying the status of canine chronic kidney disease (CKD) using renal ultrasonographic images and assess its diagnostic performance in comparison with that of veterinary imaging specialists, thereby verifying its clinical utility. Materials and methods: In this study, 883 ultrasonograms were obtained from 198 dogs, including those diagnosed with CKD according to the International Renal Interest Society (IRIS) guidelines and healthy dogs. After preprocessing and labeling each image with its corresponding IRIS stage, the renal regions were extracted and classified based on the IRIS stage using the convolutional neural network-based object detection algorithm You Only Look Once. The training scenarios consisted of multi-class classification, categorization of images into IRIS stages, and four binary classifications based on specific IRIS stages. To prevent model overfitting, we balanced the dataset, implemented early stopping, used lightweight models, and applied dropout techniques. Model performance was assessed using accuracy, recall, precision, F1 score, and receiver operating characteristic curve and compared with the diagnostic accuracy of four specialists. Inter- and intra-observer variabilities among specialists were also evaluated. Results: The developed model exhibited a low accuracy of 0.46 in multi-class classification. However, a significant performance improvement was observed in binary classifications, with the model designed to distinguish stage 3 or higher showing the highest accuracy of 0.85. In this classification, recall, precision, and F1 score values were all 0.85, and the area under the curve was 0.89. Compared with radiologists, whose accuracy ranged from 0.48 to 0.62 in this experimental scenario, the AI model exhibited superiority. Intra-observer reliability among radiologists was substantial, whereas inter-observer variability showed a moderate level of agreement. Conclusions: This study developed a deep-learning framework capable of reliably classifying CKD IRIS stages 3 and 4 in dogs using ultrasonograms. The developed framework demonstrated higher accuracy than veterinary imaging specialists and provided more objective and consistent interpretations. Therefore, deep-learning-based ultrasound diagnostics are potentially valuable tools for diagnosing CKD in dogs.
Enhancing Canine Musculoskeletal Diagnoses: Leveraging Synthetic Image Data for Pre-Training AI-Models on Visual Documentations

Abstract:The examination of the musculoskeletal system in dogs is a challenging task in veterinary practice. In this work, a novel method has been developed that enables efficient documentation of a dog's condition through a visual representation. However, since the visual documentation is new, there is no existing training data. The objective of this work is therefore to mitigate the impact of data scarcity in order to develop an AI-based diagnostic support system. To this end, the potential of synthetic data that mimics realistic visual documentations of diseases for pre-training AI models is investigated. We propose a method for generating synthetic image data that mimics realistic visual documentations. Initially, a basic dataset containing three distinct classes is generated, followed by the creation of a more sophisticated dataset containing 36 different classes. Both datasets are used for the pre-training of an AI model. Subsequently, an evaluation dataset is created, consisting of 250 manually created visual documentations for five different diseases. This dataset, along with a subset containing 25 examples. The obtained results on the evaluation dataset containing 25 examples demonstrate a significant enhancement of approximately 10% in diagnosis accuracy when utilizing generated synthetic images that mimic real-world visual documentations. However, these results do not hold true for the larger evaluation dataset containing 250 examples, indicating that the advantages of using synthetic data for pre-training an AI model emerge primarily when dealing with few examples of visual documentations for a given disease. Overall, this work provides valuable insights into mitigating the limitations imposed by limited training data through the strategic use of generated synthetic data, presenting an approach applicable beyond the canine musculoskeletal assessment domain.

Abstract:Histopathology, the gold-standard technique in classifying canine mammary tumors (CMTs), is a time-consuming process, affected by high inter-observer variability. Digital (DP) and Computer-aided pathology (CAD) are emergent fields that will improve overall classification accuracy. In this study, the ability of the CAD systems to distinguish benign from malignant CMTs has been explored on a dataset—namely CMTD—of 1056 hematoxylin and eosin JPEG images from 20 benign and 24 malignant CMTs, with three different CAD systems based on the combination of a convolutional neural network (VGG16, Inception v3, EfficientNet), which acts as a feature extractor, and a classifier (support vector machines (SVM) or stochastic gradient boosting (SGB)), placed on top of the neural net. Based on a human breast cancer dataset (i.e., BreakHis) (accuracy from 0.86 to 0.91), our models were applied to the CMT dataset, showing accuracy from 0.63 to 0.85 across all architectures. The EfficientNet framework coupled with SVM resulted in the best performances with an accuracy from 0.82 to 0.85. The encouraging results obtained by the use of DP and CAD systems in CMTs provide an interesting perspective on the integration of artificial intelligence and machine learning technologies in cancer-related research.

Comparison of artificial intelligence to the veterinary radiologist's diagnosis of canine cardiogenic pulmonary edema

Abstract:Application of artificial intelligence (AI) to improve clinical diagnosis is a burgeoning field in human and veterinary medicine. The objective of this prospective, diagnostic accuracy study was to determine the accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of an AI-based software for diagnosing canine cardiogenic pulmonary edema from thoracic radiographs, using an American College of Veterinary Radiology-certified veterinary radiologist's interpretation as the reference standard. Five hundred consecutive canine thoracic radiographs made after-hours by a veterinary Emergency Department were retrieved. A total of 481 of 500 cases were technically analyzable. Based on the radiologist's assessment, 46 (10.4%) of these 481 dogs were diagnosed with cardiogenic pulmonary edema (CPE+). Of these cases, the AI software designated 42 of 46 as CPE+ and four of 46 as cardiogenic pulmonary edema negative (CPE-). Accuracy, sensitivity, and specificity of the AI-based software compared to radiologist diagnosis were 92.3%, 91.3%, and 92.4%, respectively (positive predictive value, 56%; negative predictive value, 99%). Findings supported using AI software screening for thoracic radiographs of dogs with suspected cardiogenic pulmonary edema to assist with short-term decision-making when a radiologist is unavailable.

First molecular identification of Sarcocystis hirsuta in Iranian beef: A case report

Abstract:Introduction: The main agents of sarcocystosis in cattle as an intermediate host include S. cruzi, S. hominis and S. hirsuta. A sensitive and specific tool such as molecular-based techniques would be necessary to identify the species. Case report: After collection of beef sample from Yazd slaughterhouse, DNA extraction was done with salting out method. The 18SrRNA gene as a specific target gene was used for molecular detection of Sarcocystis spp, then Restriction Fragment Length Polymorphysm (RFLP) analysis identified the speciesusing Rsa and Bfa. Results showed that our designed molecular method could identify S. hirsuta in beef sample. Conclusion: Based on our knowledge, this study indicates the first report of molecular identification of S. hirsuta in Iran.

Determining a dog's age and breed from photos has become vital due to rising popularity of dogs as pets and the demand for personalized, data-driven pet care. Traditional methods rely on manual inspection and judgment, prone to errors. Furthermore, mating compatibility among breeds is a consideration for dog owners. This aids users in identifying compatible breeds for mating, increasing successful mating chances. To achieve accurate age and breed, deep learning models are trained on a vast collection of annotated dog photos. These models use Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and transfer learning to improve performance and generalize knowledge, revealing age and breed patterns. Researchers, breeders, and owners can benefit from this data. Following ISO-25010 guidelines, the study confirms the system's accuracy in age and breed determination, as well as its ability to detect user locations for successful mating. It meets response time and resource utilization requirements, ensuring timely operations. Computational diagnosis and risk evaluation for canine lymphoma

Abstract:The canine lymphoma blood test detects the levels of two biomarkers, the acute phase proteins (C-Reactive Protein and Haptoglobin). This test can be used for diagnostics, for screening, and for remission monitoring as well. We analyze clinical data, test various machine learning methods and select the best approach to these oblems. Three families of methods, decision trees, kNN (including advanced and adaptive kNN) and probability density evaluation with radial basis functions, are used for classification and risk estimation. Several pre-processing approaches were implemented and compared. The best of them are used to create the diagnostic system. For the differential diagnosis the best solution gives the sensitivity and specificity of 83.5% and 77%, respectively (using three input features, CRP, Haptoglobin and standard clinical symptom). For the screening task, the decision tree method provides the best result, with sensitivity and specificity of 81.4% and >99%, respectively (using the same input features). If the clinical symptoms (Lymphadenopathy) are considered as unknown then a decision tree with CRP and Hapt only provides sensitivity 69% and specificity 83.5%. The lymphoma risk evaluation problem is formulated and solved. The best models are selected as the system for computational lymphoma diagnosis and evaluation of the risk of lymphoma as well. These methods are implemented into a special web-accessed software and are applied to the problem of monitoring dogs with lymphoma after treatment. It detects recurrence of lymphoma up to two months prior to the appearance of clinical signs. The risk map visualization provides a friendly tool for exploratory data analysis.

Determining the Presence and Size of Shoulder Lesions in Sows Using Computer Vision

Abstract:Shoulder sores predominantly arise in breeding sows and often result in untimely culling. Reported prevalence rates vary significantly, spanning between 5% and 50% depending upon the type of crate flooring inside a farm, the animal's body condition, or an existing injury that causes lameness. These lesions represent not only a welfare concern but also have an economic impact due to the labor needed for treatment and medication. The objective of this study was to evaluate the use of computer vision techniques in detecting and determining the size of shoulder lesions. A Microsoft Kinect V2 camera captured the top-down depth and RGB images of sows in farrowing crates. The RGB images were collected at a resolution of 1920 × 1080. To ensure the best view of the lesions, images were selected with sows lying on their right and left sides with all legs extended. A total of 824 RGB images from 70 sows with lesions at various stages of development were identified and annotated. Three deep learning-based object detection models, YOLOv5, YOLOv8, and Faster-RCNN, pre-trained with the COCO and ImageNet datasets, were implemented to localize the lesion area. YOLOv5 was the best predictor as it was able to detect lesions with an mAP@0.5 of 0.92. To estimate the lesion area, lesion pixel segmentation was carried out on the localized region using traditional image processing techniques like Otsu's binarization and adaptive thresholding alongside DL-based segmentation models based on U-Net architecture. In conclusion, this study demonstrates the potential of computer vision techniques in effectively detecting and assessing the size of shoulder lesions in breeding sows, providing a promising avenue for improving sow welfare and reducing economic losses.
Keeping Pathologists in the Loop and an Adaptive F1-Score Threshold Method for Mitosis Detection in Canine Perivascular Wall Tumours

Abstract:Performing a mitosis count (MC) is the diagnostic task of histologically grading canine Soft Tissue Sarcoma (cSTS). However, mitosis count is subject to inter- and intra-observer variability. Deep learning models can offer a standardisation in the process of MC used to histologically grade canine Soft Tissue Sarcomas. Subsequently, the focus of this study was mitosis detection in canine Perivascular Wall Tumours (cPWTs). Generating mitosis annotations is a long and arduous process open to inter-observer variability. Therefore, by keeping pathologists in the loop, a two-step annotation process was performed where a pre-trained Faster R-CNN model was trained on initial annotations provided by veterinary pathologists. The pathologists reviewed the output false positive mitosis candidates and determined whether these were overlooked candidates, thus updating the dataset. Faster R-CNN was then trained on this updated dataset. An optimal decision threshold was applied to maximise the F1-score predetermined using the validation set and produced our best F1-score of 0.75, which is competitive with the state of the art in the canine mitosis domain.

Abstract:The incidence of malignant melanoma is increasing worldwide. If detected early, melanoma is highly treatable, so early detection is vital.Skin cancer early detection has improved significantly in recent decades, for example by the introduction of screening in 2008 and dermoscopy. Nevertheless, in particular visual detection of early melanomas remains challenging because they show many morphological overlaps with nevi. Hence, there continues to be a high medical need to further develop methods for early skin cancer detection in order to be able to reliably diagnosemelanomas at a very early stage.Routine diagnostics for melanoma detection include visual whole body inspection, often supplemented by dermoscopy, which can significantly increase the diagnostic accuracy of experienced dermatologists. A procedure that is additionally offered in some practices and clinics is wholebody photography combined with digital dermoscopy for the early detection of malignant melanoma, especially for monitoring high-risk patients.In recent decades, numerous noninvasive adjunctive diagnostic techniques were developed for the examination of suspicious pigmented moles, that may have the potential to allow improved and, in some cases, automated evaluation of these lesions. First, confocal laser microscopy should be mentioned here, as well as electrical impedance spectroscopy, multiphoton laser tomography, multispectral analysis, Raman spectroscopy or optical coherence tomography. These diagnostic techniques usually focus on high sensitivity to avoid malignant melanoma being overlooked. However, this usually implies lower specificity, which may lead to unnecessary excision of benign lesions in screening. Also, some of the procedures are time-consuming and costly, which also limits their applicability in skin cancer screening. In the near future, the use of artificial intelligence might change skin cancer diagnostics in many ways. The most promising approach may be the analysis of routine macroscopic and dermoscopic images by artificial intelligence.For the classification of pigmented skin lesions based on macroscopic and dermoscopic images, artificial intelligence, especially in form of neural networks, has achieved comparable diagnostic accuracies to dermatologists under experimental conditions in numerous studies. In particular, it achieved high accuracies in the binary melanoma/nevus classification task, but it also performed comparably well to dermatologists in multiclass differentiation of various skin diseases. However, proof of the basic applicability and utility of such systems in clinical practice is still pending. Prerequisites that remain to be established to enable translation of such diagnostic systems into dermatological routine are means that allow users to comprehend the system's decisions as well as a uniformly high performance of the algorithms on image data from other hospitals and practices.At present, hints are accumulating that computer-aided diagnosis systems could provide their greatest benefit as assistance systems, since studies indicate that a combination of human and machine achieves the best results. Diagnostic systems based on artificial intelligence are capable of detecting morphological characteristics quickly, quantitatively, objectively and reproducibly, and could thus provide a more objective analytical basis - in addition to medical experience.

Abstract:Synthetic data is becoming increasingly common for training computer vision models for a variety of tasks. Notably, such data has been applied in tasks related to humans such as 3D pose estimation where data is either difficult to create or obtain in realistic settings. Comparatively, there has been less work into synthetic animal data and it's uses for training models. Consequently, we introduce a parametric canine model, DynaDog+T, for generating synthetic canine images and data which we use for a common computer vision task, binary segmentation, which would otherwise be difficult due to the lack of available data.

Abstract:Recent advances in artificial intelligence (AI), specifically in computer vision (CV) and deep learning (DL), have created opportunities for novel systems in many fields. In the last few years, deep learning applications have demonstrated impressive results not only in fields such as autonomous driving and robotics, but also in the field of medicine, where they have, in some cases, even exceeded human-level performance. However, despite the huge potential, adoption of deep learning-based methods is still slow in many areas, especially in veterinary medicine, where we haven't been able to find any research papers using modern convolutional neural networks (CNNs) in medical image processing. We believe that using deep learning-based medical imaging can enable more accurate, faster and less expensive diagnoses in veterinary medicine. In order to do so, however, these methods have to be accessible to everyone in this field, not just to computer scientists. To show the potential of this technology, we present results on a real-world task in veterinary medicine that is usually done manually: feline reticulocyte percentage. Using an open source Keras implementation of the Single-Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) model architecture and training it on only 800 labeled images, we achieve an accuracy of 98.7% at predicting the correct number of aggregate reticulocytes in microscope images of cat blood smears. The main motivation behind this paper is to show not only that deep learning can approach or even exceed human-level performance on a task like this, but also that anyone in the field can implement it, even without a background in computer science.

Abstract:Artificial intelligence (AI) approaches have been shown to be effective in classifying skin diseases and outperforming dermatologists in diagnosis. Using big data as a dermatological diagnosis service can present several challenges. One challenge is the need to accurately label and classify large amounts of data, such as images of infected skin. This can be time-consuming and resource-intensive. It is important to implement proper safeguards to protect sensitive medical information. Despite these challenges, the use of big data in dermatology can lead to several outcomes. It can improve the accuracy of diagnoses, leading to better patient outcomes. It can also help to identify patterns and trends in skin conditions, allowing for earlier detection and prevention. In addition, big data can be used to identify risk factors for certain conditions, enabling targeted preventative measures. Convolutional neural networks (CNNs) have been widely used for skin lesion classification, and recent advances in machine learning algorithms have led to a decrease in misclassification rates compared to manual categorization by dermatologists. This article utilizes the use of big data for accurate dermatological diagnosis services, it introduces the use of various CNNs for classifying different types of skin cancer. While deep learning and pretrained transfer learning techniques have advantages over traditional methods, they also have limitations and the potential for incorrect identification under certain circumstances. This work discusses these vulnerabilities and employs pretrained models to classify 11 different skin diseases, including monkey pox. The performance of the system is evaluated using accuracy, loss, precision, recall, and F1 score, and the results show that the system is able to diagnose the 11 skin illnesses with an accuracy rate of 97% using transfer learning in Keras and computer vision models. The best model was found to be Inception_ResNetV2 with 50 epochs and the Adam optimizer.
