Abstract:The application of Co 3 O 4 in activated PMS degradation of organic pollutants has been widely concerned. Due to the limited catalytic performance of pure cobalt catalyst, a novel Cu-Co nanocomposite catalyst was synthesized in this paper for activating PMS to degrade tetracycline (TC). After a small amount of copper was introduced, Cu-Co nanocomposite displayed significant heterogeneous catalytic activity in the activation of PMS. Efficient and rapid degradation of TC was achieved under various pH conditions in the Cu-Co nanocomposite/PMS catalytic system. The generation of a large number of singlet oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) is the dominant factor in TC degradation. This study improved the practicality of the PMS activation system across various environmental conditions. Cu-Co nanocomposites exhibit exceptional catalytic properties, rendering them promising catalysts for practical applications.

Roles of BOCu sites and graphite nitrogen on persulfate non-radical activation for tetracycline degradation

Abstract:The activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) by carbon-based catalysts is deemed to be a promising method for the degradation of refractory organic contaminants in wastewater. Herein, a Cu-doping strategy in B and N co-doped carbon nanotubes with highly dispersed BOCu sites and graphite nitrogen were successfully synthesized for activating PMS to degradate tetracycline. The best removal rate of tetracycline within 60 min (97.63 %) was obtained by the 1.5 % Cu-BNC and the degradation rate was increased by 17.9 times. The enhanced catalyst activity was attributed to the promoting the cycle of the Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox pair by the formed BOCu sites, and the accelerating the electron transfer process by the adsorption of graphitic N for PMS. The non-free radical pathway including 1O2 and electron transfer played a dominant role in the 1.5 % Cu-BNC/PMS system. The degradation intermediates of TC were identified and three possible degradation pathways were proposed. Further toxicity analysis of the intermediates showed that the 1.5 % Cu-BNC/PMS system had a significant effect on weakening and reducing the biological toxicity and mutagenicity of TC. Moreover, it presented an excellent degradation performance in raw natural water. In general, the proposed regulation of carbon-based catalysts via the coordination-driven effect provides ideas for efficient wastewater treatment.
Effective removal of antibiotics from water by Cu2O/Co3O4-catalyzed peroxymonosulfate oxidation: catalytic performance and degradation mechanism

Abstract:The development of efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activated catalysts is important for the degradation and mineralization of organic pollutants. Metal-organic frameworks derived cobalt oxide modified cuprous oxide (Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 ) with carbon bone were constructed by driving a dual-precursors of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF-67) and Cu 2 O, activating PMS for organic degradation. XRD, FT-IR, EDS analyses and XPS were used to demonstrate phase purity while SEM and HR-TEM were used to discover the shape of the synthesised material. EIS, transient current and LSV were used to enquire about the conductivity of the samples and change in current density accordingly. The degradation efficiency of Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 -10 for TC reached 89.8% within 60 min under dark conditions. Its activated degradation of oxytetracycline (OTC), levofloxacin (LEV) and ciprofloxacin (CIP) was 89.4%, 81.32% and 54.09%, respectively. Spherical cuprous oxide loaded on cubic cobalt oxide. Furthermore, the effective activation of PMS was achieved by increasing the electron donor capacity of Co and redox cycling of Cu. The single linear state of oxygen ( 1 O 2 ) produced by Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 is well adapted to H 2 PO 4 − and is active at pH = 7. Notably, Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 utilized hydrogen persulfate (HSO 5 − ) to generate superoxide radicals (·O 2 − ) and 1 O 2 in the PMS system by Co 3+ /Co 2+ and Cu 2+ /Cu + cyclic conversion. The strong interaction and electron transfer between Cu 2 O/Co 3 O 4 and PMS and the synergistic effect of the bimetallic oxide redox cycle accelerated improved the catalytic activity. In conclusion, this study provides a new perspective that is conducive to improving the practical application of sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation processes (SR-AOPs).

Abstract:Although Cu(II)/peroxymonosulfate (PMS) process has been successfully applied to degrade varied organic contaminants in water, the slow transformation of Cu(II) to Cu(I) that works only in alkaline conditions retards the treatment efficiency of this process. In this study, a new finding was observed, that is, oxytetraczdycline (OTC) could effectively enhance the degradation of organic pollutants in Cu(II)/PMS process where it was also removed in acidic conditions. With the addition of OTC in Cu(II)/PMS system, 85.5% of rhodamine B (RhB) was degraded in 90 min at pH 4.0, which was far more than that without OTC (36.1%), and simultaneously 98.1% of OTC was eliminated. The added OTC could form OTC-Cu(II) complexes which might powerfully improve the reduction of Cu(II) to Cu(I), exerting a positive effect on the PMS activation and subsequent degradation of RhB. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) experiments assisted with radical scavenging experiments and Raman spectrum detection results suggested that Cu(III) and hydroxyl radical (HO • ) were the predominant reactive species for RhB degradation, while OTC removal in this system was mainly ascribed to direct PMS oxidation. The Cu(II)/PMS process also showed a promising success on the synergistic degradation of OTC with the other four refractory organic pollutants, indicating the potential application of PMS oxidation in water treatment.

Abstract:The increasingly severe antibiotic pollution has become one of the most critical issues. In this study, a zinc peroxide/peroxymonosulfate (ZnO2/PMS) double-oxidation system was developed for tetracycline (TC) degradation. A small amount of ZnO2 (10 mg) and PMS (30 mg) could effectively degrade 82.8% of TC (100 mL, 50 mg/L), and the degradation process could be well described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. Meanwhile, the ZnO2/PMS double-oxidation system showed high adaptability in terms of reaction temperature (2–40 °C), initial pH value (4–12), common inorganic anions (Cl−, NO3−, SO42− and HCO3−), natural water source and organic pollutant type. The quenching experiment and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) characterization results confirmed that the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) was singlet oxygen (1O2). Moreover, three possible pathways of TC degradation were deduced according to the analyses of intermediates. On the basis of comparative characterization and experiment results, a synergistic activation mechanism was further proposed for the ZnO2/PMS double-oxidation system, accounting for the superior degradation performance. The released OH− and H2O2 from ZnO2 could activate PMS to produce major 1O2 and minor superoxide radicals (•O2−), respectively.

Abstract:Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as precursors for catalysts has drawn growing attentions. In this study, heterojunction Co3O4-CuO doped carbon materials (noted as Co3O4-CuO@CN) were prepared by direct carbonization of CuCo-MOF in air. It was found that the Co3O4-CuO@CN-2 exhibited excellent catalytic activity with the highest Oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation rate of 0.0902 min-1 at 50 mg/L of Co3O4-CuO@CN-2 dosage, 2.0 mM of PMS and 20 mg/L of OTC, which was 4.25 and 4.96 times that of CuO@CN and Co3O4@CN, respectively. Furthermore, Co3O4-CuO@CN-2 was efficient over a wide pH range (pH 1.9-8.4), and possessed good stability and reusability without OTC degradation decrease after five consecutive uses at pH 7.0. In a comprehensive analysis, the rapid regeneration of Cu(II) and Co(II) is responsible for their excellent catalytic performance, and the p-p heterojunction structure formed between Co3O4 and CuO acts as an intermediary of electron transfer to accelerate PMS decomposition. Moreover, it was interesting to find that Cu rather than Co species played a vital role in the PMS activation. The quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance demonstrated that .OH, SO4•-, and 1O2 were the reactive species responsible for oxidation of OTC and the non-radical pathway triggered by 1O2 was dominant.

Abstract:Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) based advanced oxidation methods have gained attention for eliminating antibiotics like oxytetracycline (OTC) from wastewater. This study presents an innovative approach by incorporating oxygen vacancies (OVs) into CuFe 2 O 4 to create OVs-CuFe 2 O 4 materials. Compared to traditional CuFe 2 O 4 , OVs-CuFe 2 O 4 offered superior catalytic performance due to its surface-rich OVs promoting rapid conversion of oxygen and efficient metal redox of Fe(II)/Fe(III) and Cu(I)/Cu(II). OVs-CuFe 2 O 4 /PMS achieved impressive 95.7 % OTC removal in 45 min with a rate constant of 0.107 min −1 , which was 3.87 times of CuFe 2 O 4 /PMS. The OVs-CuFe 2 O 4 /PMS system exhibited a broad pH tolerance range of 3 to 11 with OTC removal efficiency above 89.3 %. The OVs-CuFe 2 O 4 /PMS system produced various free radicals and non-radical for OTC degradation. The OVs-CuFe 2 O 4 also has good stability with removal efficiency of 81.9 % at fourth cycle. This research gives a strategy to construct oxygen vacancies enrich catalysts for efficient activation of PMS and treatment of antibiotics wastewater.

Abstract:In this research, the degradation of different types of N-containing heterocycle (NHC) contaminants by Cu-OMS-2 via peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in an aqueous environment was investigated. First, the effects of different reaction parameters were optimized using benzotriazole (BTR) as the model contaminant, and the optimal reaction conditions were 8 mM PMS, 0.35 g/L Cu-OMS-2, and 30 degrees C. Nine different types of NHC contaminants were effectively degraded under these reaction conditions, and the degradation efficiencies and the mineralization rates of those NHCs were more than 68 and 46%, respectively. Moreover, the Cu-OMS-2/PMS process presented excellent performance at a wide pH ranging from 3.0 to 11.0 and in the presence of some representative anions (NO3- and SO42-) and dissolved organic matter (fumaric acid). The inhibition sequence of anions on BTR removal during the Cu-OMS-2/PMS process was H2PO4- > HCO3- > Cl- > CO32- > NO3- > SO42-. It was also found that 74.5 and 71.3% BTR degradation rates were achieved in actual water bodies, such as tap water and Yellow River water, respectively. Besides, the Cu-OMS-2 heterogeneous catalyst had excellent stability and reusability, and the degradation rate of BTR was still at 77.0% after 5 cycles. Finally, electron paramagnetic resonance analysis and scavenging tests showed that O-1(2) and SO4- (center dot) were the primary reactive oxygen species. Accordingly, Cu-OMS-2 nanomaterial was an efficient and sustainable heterogeneous catalyst to activate PMS for the decontamination of BTR in water remediation.

Abstract:In recent years, advanced oxidation technologies employ peroxynitrite activation have exhibited exceptional effectiveness in eliminating various emerging contaminants. In this study, different calcination temperatures were used to derive Co3O4 nanospheres with varying surface morphologies. This method effectively addresses the issue of high cost associated with high-performance catalyst synthesis or poor catalytic performance of low-cost catalysts. The active species like O2 •−, •OH, SO4 •−, 1O2 played significant role in TC degradation and 1O2 was the dominant reactive oxygen species (ROS). The study also proposed possible degradation pathways based on the 15 intermediates identified through HPLC-MS. Furthermore, the developmental toxicity of the identified intermediates was evaluated using a quantitative conformational relationship prediction method. This paper delves into the reaction mechanism of Co3O4 nanospheres in the activation of PMS and examines the impact of surface morphology on their catalytic performance, providing a new approach to developing a persulfate catalyst that is cost-effective and has high catalytic performance, with a simple synthesis step.

Abstract:The modulation of bimetallic oxide structures and development of efficient, easily recoverable catalysts are expected to effectively overcome the limitations associated with powdered catalysts in activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS). In this study, CuCo2O4 was successfully immobilized on the surface of nickel foam (NF) via an electrodeposition-calcination procedure, with highly efficient activation of PMS for tetracycline (TC) degradation (0.55 min-1). Besides acting as a support carrier and providing ample active sites, NF mediated electron transport, prevented the leaching of metal ions and enhanced the efficiency of recycling. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations and experimental tests illustrated that Cu/Co dual-sites can efficiently adsorb PMS, enabling simultaneous reduction and oxidation reactions. The dual-site synergy substantially decreased the adsorption barrier and increased the electron transfer rate. Especially, the Cu+/Cu2+ redox couple acted as an electron donor and facilitated rapid charge transfer, leading to the conversion of Co3+ to Co2+. Moreover, the CuCo2O4@NF + PMS system effectively eliminated TC by employing radical pathways (SO4•-, •OH) and nonradical processes (1O2, e-). Therefore, this study introduces a new approach to overcome the limitations of powdered bimetallic oxides, providing a promising solution for practical applications.

Abstract:This study utilizes a Mn0.7Co0.5O2@C catalyst derived from MnCO3‐ZIF‐67 to activate peroxymonosulfate for tetracycline degradation. The catalyst, characterized by abundant active sites and efficient electron transfer, achieves an 87.54% TC degradation rate within 60 min. The Mn0.7Co0.5O2@C/PMS system, with its broad adaptability and stability, generates reactive species including 1O2, SO4•−, and •OH, leading to TC removal. Persulfate advanced oxidation technologyshows great potential in the removal of organic pollutants. Inthis study, a Mn0.7Co0.5O2@C catalyst wassynthesized from MnCO3‐ZIF‐67 precursor via calcination and employedto activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of tetracycline (TC).The catalyst, characterized by a plethora of active sites and superior electrontransfer capabilities, mitigated the sluggish reaction kinetics associated withweak electron transfer. Degradation experiments demonstrated an 87.54% removalefficiency within 60 minutes using 10 mg of catalyst, outperforming PMS aloneby 2.3‐fold. The Mn0.7Co0.5O2@C/PMS system'ssynergistic effects and mechanisms were elucidated, with experiments confirmingthe generation of reactive species including singlet oxygen (1O2), sulfate radicals (SO4•−), and hydroxyl radicals (•OH).The catalyst's exceptional performance is attributed to the valence cycling ofMn and Co ions, facilitating PMS activation and the production of radicals. Additionally, the lattice oxygen within the catalyst is oxidized to form reactive oxygenspecies, which, in conjunction with oxygen vacancies, react with PMS to producenon‐radical species (1O2). The synergistic oxidationeffects of these free radicals and non‐radicals ultimately facilitate theremoval of TC, offering a novel approach for the treatment of organicwastewater with persulfate‐based advanced oxidation processes.

Abstract:Sulfate radical-based advanced oxidation process (SR-AOP) has been identified as an efficient technology for the treatment of antibiotic contamination, with a focus on the development of catalysts for efficient activation of persulfate. In this work, a novel peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator, metal organic framework (MOF) derived Fe2O3/Mn3O4 composite, was prepared and characterized. The physicochemical properties, catalytic performance of the catalyst and the degradation mechanism of tetracycline (TC) by the reaction system were thoroughly investigated. Combined with the experimental results and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we can reasonably speculate that both radical (O2 ˙ˉ) and non-radical (1O2 and electron transfer) pathways contributed to the catalytic activation of PMS for TC degradation. The enhanced catalytic activity was attributed to the combination of Fe2O3 with Mn3O4 accelerated Fe(II)/Fe(III) cycle and Mn(II)/Mn(III) cycle. In addition, the extended peroxide O-O bond length facilitated the generation of 1O2. After five consecutive experiments, no significant change in catalytic performance and chemical structure was found, indicating that this catalyst had not only good chemical stability but also astonishing reusability. The research results are expected to provide some valuable theoretical basis for MOF-derived metal oxides catalytic activation of PMS for wastewater treatment.

Abstract:It was of great significance to improve the performance of catalysts in peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation for water pollution control. Herein, Cu 2 O-based catalysts with different exposed facets were synthesized by a feasible method, and later employed for activating PMS to conduct the degradation tests of tetracycline (TC). With the increase of exposed (1 0 0) facet, the specific surface area of Cu 2 O was improved and the interface charge transfer resistance was reduced. More interestingly, benefiting from the exposure of (1 0 0) facet, the electron-donating ability of Cu 2 O was boosted, and the adsorption energy of PMS over Cu 2 O was also reduced, thereby creating favorable conditions for PMS activation. As guessed, Cu 2 O-1 with (1 0 0) facet can quickly activate PMS to achieve the effective degradation of TC, and the highest removal efficiency of TC over Cu 2 O-1 can be up to 97.56 % within 15 min. Furthermore, Cu 2 O-1 with good anti-interference showed satisfactory reusability, and the degradation intermediates of TC were the low toxic or nontoxic. In the Cu 2 O-1/PMS system, various reactive oxygen species were detected, including SO 4 •– , OH • , O 2 •– and 1 O 2 , and wherein the contribution of 1 O 2 to TC degradation was the greatest. In short, current work shared some valuable insights into persulfate-based advanced oxidation processes.

Abstract:Engineering dual redox centers in catalysts for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation emerges an efficient strategy to achieve high pollutant degradation performance. In this study, MIL-88 A (Fe) supported copper sulphide (MIL-88 A (Fe)@CuS) was developed as a PMS activator to degrade aqueous tetracycline (TC). MIL-88 A (Fe)@CuS showed high catalytic performance towards PMS activation, and a TC degradation rate of 91.0 % (20 mg/L) could be achieved within 40 min, with a k value of 0.3921min −1 . The TC removal rate of the MIL-88 A (Fe)@CuS system was 1.55 and 1.12 times higher than that of MIL-88 A (Fe) + PMS and CuS + PMS systems, respectively. MIL-88 A (Fe)@CuS also possessed excellent stability in terms of good activity maintenance, low metal leaching, and stable structure. In addition, the MIL-88 A (Fe)@CuS + PMS system exhibited good degradation performance towards different antibiotics in real water metrics. In TC degradation, reactive oxygen species (ROS) include SO 4 • - , •OH, O 2 •- and 1 O 2 are involved, and SO 4 • - served as the main species. The synergistic effect of both Cu and Fe cycles for PMS activation was confirmed, and S benefited the rapid Cu 2+ /Cu + and Fe 3+ /Fe 2+ cycling. Furthermore, three potential TC degradation pathways have been identified based on experimental and computational studies. Overall, this work presents a feasible approach for developing efficient composite catalysts for advanced oxidation processes with dual redox cycles.

High efficiency degradation of tetracycline by peroxymonosulfate activated with Fe/NC catalysts: Performance, intermediates, stability and mechanism

Abstract:Carbon-based catalysts have the advantages of biological cleaning, eco-friendly and cost-effective in water treatment. While, nitrogen doped biochar promotes the development of non-radical peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation in environmental remediation. Thus, three-dimensional sponge-like porous Fe and N co-doped biochar (Fe/CN-30) with high catalytic activity for PMS activation was synthesized. In a wide pH range (1-11), the Fe/CN-30 catalyst can efficiently degrade tetracycline (TC) with a small amount of PMS. The non-radical pathways are prominent in the TC decomposition process according to the quenching experiments, electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (GC-MS) analysis, in which the contribution of high-valent iron-oxo species (Fe(IV) = O) was dominant. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and reaction kinetic experiments confirmed that the coordination sites of Fe and N in the Fe/CN-30 are the reactive centers for TC degradation. Moreover, the successive addition of low concentration PMS into the system was confirmed to favor the PMS utilization, and the high selectivity of the Fe/CN-30 was confirmed by the analysis of pollutant structure. Furthermore, by-products of TC degradation in the Fe/CN-30/PMS system and the possible TC degradation pathways were proposed via liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Therefore, this study dedicates to providing new insights into the non-radical pathway-catalyzed AOPs.

Abstract:Fe-N co-doped coral-like hollow carbon shell (Fe-N-CS) was synthesized via a simply impregnation-pyrolysis method. The Fe-N-CS showed an excellent ability for activating peroxymonosulfate (PMS), which could degrade about 93.74% tetracycline (20 mg/L) in 12 min. The Fe-N-CS/PMS system exhibited a good anti-interference capacity of various pH, inorganic anions, HA and different water qualities. More importantly, the Fe nanoparticles were anchored uniformly in the carbon layer, effectively limiting the metal leaching. The quenching tests and electron spin resonance (ESR) manifested that non-radical singlet oxygen (1O2) was the main reactive oxygen species (ROS) for TC degradation. The mechanism study showed that Fe nanoparticles, defect and graphite N played a key role in activating PMS to produce ROS. Moreover, three probable degradation pathways were proposed by using LC-MS measurements. Generally, this work had a new insight for the synthesis of heterogeneous Fe-N-C catalysts in the advanced oxidation process based on PMS.

Abstract:In this work, NiCo2O4 was synthesized from bimetallic oxalate and utilized as a heterogeneous catalyst to active peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of tetracycline (TC). The degradation efficiency of TC (30 mg/L) in the NiCo2O4 + PMS system reached 92.4%, with NiCo2O4 exhibiting satisfactory reusability, stability, and applicability. Radical trapping test and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) results indicated that SO4•−, •OH, O2•−, and 1O2 were the dominating reactive oxygen species (ROS) for TC degradation in the NiCo2O4 + PMS system. Seven intermediates were identified, and their degradation pathways were proposed. Toxicity assessment using T.E.S.T software (its version is 5.1.1.0) revealed that the identified intermediates had lower toxicity compared to intact TC. A rice seed germination test further confirmed that the NiCo2O4 + PMS system effectively degraded TC into low-toxicity or non-toxic products. In conclusion, NiCo2O4 shows promise as a safe and efficient catalyst in advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for the degradation of organic pollutants.

Abstract:For reducing the amount and fully utilizing active sites of CuO, microscale CuO coated melamine-cyanuric acid supramolecular assembly (CuO/MCSA) was developed in situ and empolyed as efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for water decontamination. The characteristics of CuO/MCSA were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, XPS, SEM, TEM and BET. CuO/MCSA showed strong catalytic ability to activate PMS for tetracycline (TC) degradation. Under the condition of pH≈7 and PMS dosage of 0.5 mmol /L, 1 g/L CuO/MCSA including less than 3.0 wt% CuO can remove about 70% of 20 mg/L TC within 5 min. And after five consecutive cycles, the degradation rate of CuO/MCSA was still around 52.6%. PMS dosage, reaction temperature and initial pH value, co-existing anions and small molecule acids all affected the performance of CuO/MCSA/PMS system on TC degradation. According to the quenching experiments and electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) test, 1O2 played the most important role in TC degradation in CuO/MCSA/PMS system. In addition, CuO/CSA/PMS system exhibited wide applicability, which can effectively remove TC in different water bodies (deionized water, tap water and lake water) and various pollutants (TC, methylene orange and methyl blue). Overall, this work provided an effective strategy to enhance the efficient utilization of catalyst for PMS activation.

Abstract:A new metal-free O-doped and pyridine-grafted g-C3N4 (OCN/Py) was prepared and used to degrade tetracycline (TC) with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as oxidant under visible light irradiation. Doping of O and graft of Py into CN framework could enhance the separation of photogenerated charge carriers, the adsorption of PMS and TC, as well as PMS activation. Experiments and theoretical calculations confirmed that the OCN/Py-PMS* complex was formed and mediated electron transfer for degrading TC. In addition, the ⋅O2−, •OH, surface-bound SO4•−, 1O2, especially holes contributed to TC removal. 97.0 % TC was degraded after 60 min visible light irradiation in the presence of 0.16 g L–1 OCN/Py and 0.5 mM PMS. The corresponding total organic carbon removal ratio and apparent rate constant were 97.37 % and 0.0568 min−1, respectively. This work provides an effective way to change CN structure for boosting TC degradation, and gives deep insights for the relationship among photogenerated charge separation, PMS activation and TC degradation.

Abstract:Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as an efficient oxidation technology, have been extensively applied for degrading recalcitrant organic contaminants via the generated reactive oxygen species from the activation reaction of catalysts. However, the leaching of metal ions and the consumption of catalysts have brought the incomplete degradation of target contaminants, the generation of wastewater containing toxicity, and the increase in costs. Here, dual metal Fe and Co co-doped g-C 3 N 4 composite (N/CoFeX) was successfully synthesized and used as an efficient peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activator for oxytetracycline (OTC) degradation with a slight leaching of metal ions and superb degradation performance. In addition, the specific insertion structure and the formation of the Fe–O–Co bond into N/CoFeX can bring remarkable catalytic ability and stability, which further prevents the leaching of Co (0.004 mg L −1 ) and Fe ions (0.005 mg L −1 ) and achieves an efficient OTC removal rate (100%) within 60 min. Further calculations show that the lowest adsorption energy of PMS on N/CoFeX aids in PMS activation and can boost the electron transfer from organic pollutants to PMS, further enhancing the generation of radicals and the decomposition of OTC. The relatively slight toxicity of the degradation intermediates examined by proteomics analysis strongly as well as minor leaching of metal ions exhibit great potential for large-scale applications of AOPs in the field of wastewater purification and remediation.
