Abstract:Notothenioid fishes, a perciform group, radiated in the cold shelf waters around the Antarctic continent and the 110 species dominate fish diversity, abundance, and biomass at levels of ≈77%, 92%, and 91%, respectively. This occurred in a locality with frequent glaciomarine cycles that fragmented and obliterated habitats, disrupted ecosystems, and made parts of the high latitude shelves periodically uninhabitable. The notothenioid radiation encompasses three stages and 10 axes: for the habitat stage, divergence in (1) depth and (2) biotope, meaning subdivisions within the pelagic and benthic realms; for the morphology stage, divergence in (3) body size, (4) body density based on proportions of skeletal and adipose tissues, (5) body shape, (6) trophic morphology, specifically head morphology related to feeding (jaws, teeth, head size, and pharyngeal gape), and (7) neuromorphology (brain and sensory systems); and for the communication stage, divergence in (8) fecundity and egg size, (9) sexual dichromatism and dimorphism in body and fins, and (10) parental care behavior associated with nesting. There was an antecedent Eocene fossil fauna that did not include notothenioids and that has minimal taxonomic representation in the modern fauna. Liparids (snailfishes) and zoarcids (eelpouts) also diversified in Antarctic waters but with minimal divergence. Hypotheses are offered as to why these radiations played out the way they did and why notothenioids are dominant.

Abstract:The Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) represents the most widespread and abundant fish in the Arctic and is a critical trophic link in its ecosystems. Like many species endemic to the region, it has lost essential habitat as the extent and thickness of sea ice have declined substantially in recent decades. Extreme warming induced by climate change continues to deteriorate polar marine environments. Thus, understanding how Arctic cod use and partition their habitat/environment is central to their conservation. We assessed Arctic cod functional morphology using traditional (including gill rakers) and geometric morphometrics and explored whether these differed among primarily depth-based habitats and age classes using multivariate techniques. While distinct ecotypes have been proposed, these were not detected in our analyses. Rather, results show similar patterns in external morphology of Arctic cod across habitats and age classes in the Beaufort Sea. However, analysis of gill rakers revealed concurrent habitat- and age-specific changes likely associated with dietary preferences. Findings indicate that although Arctic cod do not specialise in external morphological features in any habitat, important aspects of their internal feeding morphology shift as they grow, likely underpinning important distributional shifts and its critical role in transferring energy in Arctic marine ecosystems.

Abstract:Abstract Allometric relationships between body properties of animals are useful for a wide variety of purposes, such as estimation of biomass, growth, population structure, bioenergetic modelling and carbon flux studies. This study summarizes allometric relationships of zooplankton and nekton species that play major roles in polar marine food webs. Measurements were performed on 639 individuals of 15 species sampled during three expeditions in the Southern Ocean (winter and summer) and 2374 individuals of 14 species sampled during three expeditions in the Arctic Ocean (spring and summer). The information provided by this study fills current knowledge gaps on relationships between length and wet/dry mass of understudied animals, such as various gelatinous zooplankton, and of animals from understudied seasons and maturity stages, for example, for the krill Thysanoessa macrura and larval Euphausia superba caught in winter. Comparisons show that there is intra-specific variation in length–mass relationships of several species depending on season, e.g. for the amphipod Themisto libellula . To investigate the potential use of generalized regression models, comparisons between sexes, maturity stages or age classes were performed and are discussed, such as for the several krill species and T. libellula . Regression model comparisons on age classes of the fish E. antarctica were inconclusive about their general use. Other allometric measurements performed on carapaces, eyes, heads, telsons, tails and otoliths provided models that proved to be useful for estimating length or mass in, e.g. diet studies. In some cases, the suitability of these models may depend on species or developmental stages.

Abstract:Coastal upwelling and other oceanographic processes, exert influences on phenotypic traits of early life stages of marine fishes. However, it remains to elucidate the environmental effects on the morphology of fish larvae. Using geometric morphometrics and otolith microstructure of a temperate rocky reef fish, the labrisomid blenny <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Auchenionchus crinitus</em> (Labrisomidae), we studied the larval growth, mortality and morphospace of four consecutive cohorts, hatched between austral winter and summer off central Chile. We hypothesize that coastal environmental conditions will influence early life traits of this cryptobenthic fish. The winter cohort, which inhabited colder and well-mixed nearshore waters, grew more slowly and had a more hydrodynamic head shape, while the summer cohort, which lived in warmer and stratified waters, grew faster, but had a more robust shape. Cohorts expressed less ontogenetic allometry as seasons progressed, suggesting that the seasonal increment in water temperature reduces the shape changes with size during larval development. Also, slower- and faster-growing larvae showed large variation from the consensus shape, e.g. had the largest shape disparity. Nonetheless, all cohorts showed similar mortality rates during the first month of life. Finally, increases in zonal wind stress (i.e. sea breeze) and decreases in the sea temperatures (i.e. upwelling events) increased the growth rates of older (> 15 days old) larvae. Therefore, for this cryptobenthic species, differences in growth rate and body shape are related to the seasonal increase in water temperature, and local-scale meteorological conditions.

Abstract:Abstract Myctophids are central in ocean food webs, yet knowledge of the ecology of larval stages is sparse. We investigated if larval feeding ecology is different in continental shelf break waters compared to waters off oceanic islands in the western Tropical Atlantic. The larvae were collected through diurnal and nocturnal oblique hauls using a Bongo net and stomach contents were analyzed. The larvae ranged between 2.27 and 16.5 mm in standard length. Diet composition was different in the slope and islands (Permutational Multivariate Analysis of Variance (PERMANOVA), P < 0.001). Diatoms (mainly Thalassiosira spp. and fragments of diatoms) were numerically important in the diet at the slope site (69% of relative importance). Copepods were the most relevant prey (71% of relative importance) near the islands. Copepods were the biomass-dominant dietary item at both areas, alongside ostracods near the islands. Smaller prey items were more important for smaller larvae, particularly those measuring up to 4 mm. Larger prey became relatively more important as the larvae grew to at least 8 mm. Larvae fed mostly during the daytime regardless of their size class.

Abstract:Climate change and resource exploitation in the Southern Ocean are important Anthropogenic pressure on Antarctic food webs. Understanding the eco-functional roles of Antarctic communities is essential for ecosystem management and conservation. Amphipods are among the most dominant and ecologically important benthic taxa in the Southern Ocean. The amphipod genus is part of the scavenger guild playing a dominant role in nutrient recycling. To study the trophic habits of two sister species, and , stable isotope ratios of carbon and nitrogen were investigated along geographical and bathymetrical gradients. belongs to the fourth and to the fifth trophic level, based on significant differences in δ N. Benthic primary producers dominate the diet in both species as derived from their δ C values. , the species with the narrowest depth range, did not show a depth-related pattern in isotopic ratios. An increasing geographic gradient of both δ N and δ C values was observed for , ranging from the northern most tip of the Western Antarctic Peninsula to the southwestern most part of the Bellingshausen Sea. This might be linked to nutrient rich glacial meltwater in the latter part of the Southern Ocean. Nitrogen stable isotope ratios of showed a significant difference between Crown Bay and the other locations; this might be explained by the close location of the Filchner Area to nutrient rich upwelling in the Weddell Sea Gyre. Our study provides evidence for niche differentiation between two closely related amphipod species. Incorporation of additional samples from other locations and depth ranges in combination with isotope analysis and DNA-based prey identification might clarify the trophic position of benthic amphipods.

Abstract:Tooth morphometrics and mineralogy infer inter‐ and intraspecific differences in feeding habits. Abiotic factors might regulate this relationship. Several studies have inferred the ecological significance regarding the morphometrics of Aristotle's lantern and the mechanical properties of magnesium in echinoid teeth. This study attempts to combine these aspects, connecting them to the trophic habits of three native and an invasive echinoid in the Eastern Mediterranean Sea. Spatiotemporal data from the central and southern Aegean Sea were obtained, regarding the relative size of lanterns and demi‐pyramids of Arbacia lixula, Paracentrotus lividus, Sphaerechinus granularis, and the invasive echinoid Diadema setosum and the Mg/Ca ratios of four zones on the tooth cross‐section. Since environmental factors affect the examined factors, data for temperature, salinity, and concentration of chlorophyll‐a were included in a principal component analysis. A. lixula and P. lividus presented intraspecific differences in the relative size of the lantern and demi‐pyramid, while S. granularis and D. setosum exhibited variation in the elongation index. Differences in the Mg/Ca ratios were observed for all species although in different zones. Temperature appears to be related to all Mg/Ca zones except for the stone part, while the elongation index showed an inverse trend to all other morphometric parameters. The results of the PCA for the four species on the spatiotemporal level exhibited a distinction of individuals with season but not species, except for A. lixula, an omnivore with a carnivorous tendency, which was clearly separated from the herbivorous species. Using hierarchical clustering on the principal components it was evident that the three native species occupy different clusters, but when D. setosum was added, it shared the same cluster with S. granularis. This might infer similar feeding preferences, specifically for coralline algae, which might lead to a swift in the ecological equilibrium in regions, where D. setosum is found, either by affecting habitat type, or by restricting the distribution of S. granularis as was previously observed with Diadema africanum.

Abstract:Many coastal fish species undergo ontogenetic shifts, but comparable knowledge for most exploited deep-sea fishes and their habitat use is lacking. We use otolith stable isotope analysis (SIA) to hindcast experienced temperature, depth, and field metabolic rate of 3 ecologically and commercially important deep-sea fishes from the Azores, mid-north Atlantic. Otoliths of bluemouth rockfish Helicolenus dactylopterus , Atlantic wreckfish Polyprion americanus , and blackspot seabream Pagellus bogaraveo were analysed to determine the stable isotope composition of carbon and oxygen in aragonite at core, mid and edge of otoliths. Oxygen SIA thermometry was used to infer water temperatures and depths, and carbon isotopes were used to derive individual field metabolic rate at each section. We identified sharp ontogenetic and interspecific differences in temperature, depth, and metabolism: juvenile rockfish inhabited intermediate depths before shifting to deeper waters as sub-adults; wreckfish occupied shallow waters before an abrupt ontogenetic shift to deep waters at maturity; juvenile seabream recorded the warmest temperatures, before gradually shifting to deeper waters as they grow. The mass-specific metabolic rates declined expectedly across all 3 species as individuals grew and occupied deeper and colder environments. Rockfish revealed the highest metabolic rates at low temperatures while in wreckfish, allometric scaling exponents for the whole organism field metabolic rate were comparatively low, potentially associated with changes in activity levels associated with ontogenetic depth changes. The thermal and metabolic differences throughout the ontogeny between the species illustrate the diversity of life cycles in deep-sea fishes and the relevance of integrating these into multispecies fisheries management.

Abstract:We use transcriptomics and other physiological metrics to understand how two species of copepods (Calanoides acutus and Calanus propinquus) vary across environmental gradients along the West Antarctic Peninsula, an area of rapid ecological change. For the primarily herbivorous C. acutus, physiological separation between sampling locations appears to be driven by feeding status, and gene expression differences indicate differential expression of genes regulating lipid metabolism, reproduction, aerobic metabolism, and protein translation. For the more omnivorous C. propinquus, physiology and gene expression did not segregate as clearly by location, showed minimal signs of food deprivation at any location, and had a weaker relationship with chlorophyll compared to C. acutus. Lipid‐rich copepods form an essential link between primary producers and higher trophic levels in high‐latitude oceans. These zooplankton can take advantage of ephemeral phytoplankton blooms to fuel development and reproduction. However, we have limited understanding of how the physiological condition of these animals varies in relation to environmental factors such as food availability. Due to high advection, it is likely that physiological plasticity, rather than local adaptation, is primarily responsible for physiological differences within a region. Further examination of the relationships between food availability, copepod physiology, and population dynamics will ultimately improve our capacity to predict how copepod populations will respond to rapidly changing environmental conditions in the West Antarctic Peninsula ecosystem.

Abstract:Antarctic biodiversity is affected by seasonal sea-ice dynamics driving basal resource availability. To (1) determine the role of intraspecific dietary variability in structuring benthic food webs sustaining Antarctic biodiversity, and (2) understand how food webs and the position of topologically central species vary with sea-ice cover, single benthic individuals' diets were studied by isotopic analysis before sea-ice breakup and afterwards. Isotopic trophospecies (or Isotopic Trophic Units) were investigated and food webs reconstructed using Bayesian Mixing Models. As nodes, these webs used either ITUs regardless of their taxonomic membership (ITU-webs) or ITUs assigned to species (population-webs). Both were compared to taxonomic-webs based on taxa and their mean isotopic values. Higher resource availability after sea-ice breakup led to simpler community structure, with lower connectance and linkage density. Intra-population diet variability and compartmentalisation were crucial in determining community structure, showing population-webs to be more complex, stable and robust to biodiversity loss than taxonomic-webs. The core web, representing the minimal community 'skeleton' that expands opportunistically while maintaining web stability with changing resource availability, was also identified. Central nodes included the sea-urchin Sterechinus neumayeri and the bivalve Adamussium colbecki , whose diet is described in unprecedented detail. The core web, compartmentalisation and topologically central nodes represent crucial factors underlying Antarctica's rich benthic food web persistence.

Otolith shape variability of labrid fish from Rapa Nui (Easter Island), southeastern Pacific

Abstract:Fish otolith shape provides valuable insights into the taxonomic, phylogenetic, and ecological traits of fish species. This study aimed to assess and compare the phenotypic variation in otolith shape among four labrid species ( and ) inhabiting Rapa Nui (Easter Island) in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, utilizing geometric morphometrics and aging methods. Age estimation based on otolith structure indicated that collected specimens were adults, ranging between 1 and 3 years old. Allometric analysis revealed low but significant variation (5.40%), primarily driven by changes in otolith width, resulting in distinct morphologies. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) of sagittal otoliths elucidated significant morphospace variation among species, with the first two PCs explaining 60.3% of the total variance. PC1 distinguished between elongated sagittal shapes (e.g., ) and robust sagittae (e.g., ), while PC2 correlated with otolith roundness, delineating variations within species. Canonical variate analysis further highlighted differences in otolith shape, with significant variations detected among all species. The Discriminant function analysis showed high levels of discrimination accuracy for most of species’ pairs. Except for (89%) and (96%), all other species pairs achieved 100% discrimination, highlighting the reliability of otolith shape as a distinguishing characteristic for the studied species. Overall, our findings emphasize the value of otolith shape analysis for characterizing and distinguishing Rapa Nui labrid species. This offers potential applications such as identifying prey within the digestive systems of large fish or bird predators in the vicinity of this isolated island in the South Pacific Ocean or archaeofauna studies.

Parasitic copepods affect morphospace and diet of larvae of a temperate reef fish

Abstract:The effects of ectoparasites on larvae of the clingfish Gobiesox marmoratus were evaluated at the dietary and morphometric levels. The larvae and ectoparasites were collected by nearshore plankton samplings during October, November and December 2013 off El Quisco Bay, central Chile. The standardized abundance of total larvae and those ectoparasitized larvae (PL) was positively related and high parasite prevalence was found throughout the sampling period (up to 38%). Geometric morphometrics analyses indicate main changes in the shape through early ontogeny and subtle but significant variations between PL and non-parasitized larvae (NPL). Prey composition varied between PL and NPL; small size (<6 mm standard length, LS ) parasitized larval G. marmoratus ate mostly gastropod larvae, whereas small non-parasitized specimens ate mainly cirripede nauplii. All larger (>8 mm LS ), pre-settlement stages parasitized by Trifur and, or Caligus copepods had content in their gut, suggesting that ectoparasites did not diminish prey capture in host with larger size. Morphometric and dietary changes occurring during larval development were decoupled, both for PL and NPL. The maintenance of a slender, more hydrodynamic body through pelagic development and the ingestion of less-mobile prey in PL suggests non-lethal effects of ectoparasitism on rocky-reef fish larvae.

Abstract:The community of deep‐water pelagic fishes in the Bay of Biscay has shown a great diversity of ontogenetic change strategies. Some species have undergone changes in both habitat use (use of the water column) and food sources (changes in δ15N values), while others have undergone only one of these changes. Finally, some species did not appear to have undergone any ontogenetic changes. During ontogeny, the increase in body size forces species to make trade‐offs between their food requirements, the conditions necessary for growth and reproduction as well as the avoidance of predators. Ontogenetic changes are leading species to seek out habitats and food resources that meet their needs. To this end, ontogenetic changes in nocturnal habitat (vertical use of the water column) and in the type of food resources (based on stable isotopes of nitrogen) were investigated in 12 species of deep pelagic fish from the Bay of Biscay in the Northeast Atlantic. Our results revealed the existence of major differences in the ontogenetic strategies employed by deep pelagic fishes. Some species showed ontogenetic changes in both vertical habitat use and food resources (e.g. Jewel lanternfish (Lampanyctus crocodilus) and Atlantic soft pout (Melanostigma atlanticum)). In contrast, other species showed no ontogenetic change (e.g. Koefoed's searsid (Searsia koefoedi) and Lancet fish (Notoscopelus kroyeri)). Some species only changed food resources (e.g. Spotted lanternfish (Myctophum punctatum), Spotted barracudina (Arctozenus risso) and Stout sawpalate (Serrivomer beanii)), while others seemed to be influenced more by depth than by trophic features (e.g. Bluntsnout smooth‐head (Xenodermichthys copei) and Olfer's Hatchetfish (Argyropelecus olfersii)). These results suggest that to meet their increasing energy requirements during ontogeny, some species have adopted a strategy of shifting their food resources (larger prey or prey with a higher trophic level), while others seemed to maintain their food resources but are most likely increasing the quantity of prey ingested. As fish species can have different functional roles during their development within ecosystems, characterising ontogenetic changes in mesopelagic fish species is a crucial step to be considered in future research aimed at understanding and modelling the complexity of deep‐pelagic food webs.

Abstract:Fish stocks can be defined by differences in their distribution, life history, and genetics. Managing fish based on stock structure is integral to successful management of a species because fishing may affect stocks disproportionately. Genetic and environmental differences can affect the shape and growth of otoliths and these differences may be indicative of stock structure. To investigate the potential for speciation or stock structure in giant grenadier, Albatrossia pectoralis, we quantified the shape of female giant grenadier otoliths and compared body growth rates for fish with three otolith shapes; shape types were classified visually by an experienced giant grenadier age reader, and were not defined by known distribution or life history differences. We found extreme variation in otolith shape among individuals; however, the shapes were a gradation and not clearly defined into three groups. The two more extreme shapes, visually defined as "hatchet" and "comb", were discernable based on principal component analyses of elliptical Fourier descriptors, and the "mixed" shape overlapped both of the extreme shapes. Fish with hatchet-shaped otoliths grew faster than fish with comb-shaped otoliths. A genetic test (cytochrome c oxidase 1 used by the Fish Barcode of Life Initiative) showed almost no variability among samples, indicating that the samples were all from one species. The lack of young specimens makes it difficult to link otolith shape and growth difference to life history. In addition, shape could not be correlated with adult movement patterns because giant grenadiers experience 100% mortality after capture and, therefore, cannot be tagged and released. Despite these limitations, the link between body growth and otolith shape indicates measurable differences that deserve more study.

Abstract:The Antarctic krill Euphausia superba is often considered an herbivore but is notable for its trophic flexibility, which includes feeding on protistan and metazoan zooplankton. Characterizing krill trophic position (TP) is important for understanding carbon and energy flow from phytoplankton to vertebrate predators and to the deep ocean, especially as plankton composition is sensitive to changing climate. We used repeated field sampling and experiments to study feeding by juvenile krill during three austral summers in waters near Palmer Station, Antarctica. Our approach was to combine seasonal carbon budgets, gut fluorescence measurements, imaging flow cytometry, and compound‐specific isotope analysis of amino acids. Field measurements coupled to experimentally derived grazing functional response curves suggest that phytoplankton grazing alone was insufficient to support the growth and basal metabolism of juvenile krill. Phytoplankton consumption by juvenile krill was limited due to inefficient feeding on nanoplankton (2–20 μm), which constituted the majority of autotrophic prey. Mean krill TP and the metazoan dietary fraction increased in years with higher mesozooplankton biomass, which was not coupled to phytoplankton biomass. Comparing TP estimates using δ15N of different amino acids indicated a substantial and consistent food‐web contribution from heterotrophic protists. Phytoplankton, metazoans, and heterotrophic protists all were important contributors to a diverse krill diet that changed substantially among years. Juvenile krill fed mostly on heterotrophic prey during summer near Palmer Station, and this food web complexity should be considered more broadly throughout the changing Southern Ocean.

Abstract:Abatus is a genus of irregular brooding sea urchins to the Southern Ocean. Among the 11 described species, three shared morphological traits and present an infaunal lifestyle in the infralittoral from the Subantarctic province; A. cavernosus in Patagonia, A. cordatus in Kerguelen, and A. agassizii in Tierra del Fuego and South Shetlands. The systematic of Abatus, based on morphological characters and incomplete phylogenies, is complex and largely unresolved. This study evaluates the shape variation among these species using geometric morphometrics analysis (GM). For this, 72 individuals from four locations; South Shetlands, Kerguelen, Patagonia, and Falklands/Malvinas were photographed, and 37 landmarks were digitized. To evaluate the shape differences among species, a principal component analysis and a Procrustes ANOVA were performed. Our results showed a marked difference between the Falklands/Malvinas and the other localities, characterized by a narrower and more elongated shape and a significant influence of location in shape but not sex. Additionally, the effect of allometry was evaluated using a permutation test and a regression between shape and size, showing significant shape changes during growth in all groups. The possibility that the Falklands/Malvinas group shows phenotypic plasticity or represents a distinct evolutionary unit is discussed. Finally, GM proved to be a powerful tool to differentiate these species, highlighting its utility in systematic studies.
Interpopulation trophic niches and ontogenetic shifts of a mangrove fish predator

Abstract:Fish trophic niches reflect important ecological interactions and provide insight into the structure of mangrove food webs. Few studies have been conducted in mangrove fish predators to investigate interpopulation trophic niches and ontogenetic shifts. Using stable isotope analysis and two complementary approaches, the authors investigated trophic niche patterns within and between two ontogenetic groups (juveniles and sub-adults) of a generalist predator (Acentrogobius viridipunctatus) in four mangroves with heterogeneous environmental conditions (e.g., tidal regimes, salinity fluctuations and mangrove tree community). The authors hypothesized that the trophic niche between populations would vary regionally and trophic position would increase consistently from juvenile to sub-adult stages. The results revealed that both δ13 C and δ15 N values varied greatly across populations and between ontogenetic groups, and complex spatio-ontogenetic variations were expressed by Layman's metrics. They also found some niche separation in space, which is most likely related to resource availability in spatially diverse ecosystems. In addition, trophic niche position increased consistently from juveniles to sub-adults, indicating ontogenetic feeding shifts. The isotopic plasticity index and Fulton's condition index also showed significant spatial-ontogenetic variation, which is consistent with optimal foraging theory. The findings highlight that trophic plasticity has a high adaptive value for mangrove fish predators in dynamic ecosystems.

Abstract:Important morphological and ecological modifications occur during the transition between pelagic and demersal phases in marine fish. However, it is still unknown how fast these shape changes may occur. We studied the shape changes of a common cryptobenthic fish, the triplefin Helcogrammoides chilensis (Cancino, 1960) during the shift from pelagic larvae to recently settled individuals, along rocky shores in central Chile during the austral summers of 2020 and 2021. The working hypothesis was that larval stages would show more allometry and faster shape changes in the head and the paired fins insertion than benthic juveniles, in preparation for their new environment. Shape changes were analyzed utilizing landmark-based geometric morphometrics, while age was estimated using sagittal otolith microstructure analysis. There was an important overlap in the size (length and weight) between older larvae and recently settled individuals (between 20 and 25 mm SL, and 0.08–0.17 g), nonetheless, the head shape and paired fins were clearly different between stages. Pelagic larvae (46–88 days post hatch) had a shorter pectoral fin base, a frontal mouth opening, and eyes located at the level of the tip of the upper jaw. Meanwhile, recently settled individuals (80–112 days post hatch) had wider, vertically positioned pectoral fins, mouths displaced to a vertical position, and eyes located upper and forward the head. Larvae experienced faster growth rates than settlers (0.24 vs. 0.02 mm day−1, respectively), and the pattern of ontogenetic shape changes decreased two orders of magnitude after settlement. It is plausible that after the pelagic–demersal shift most of the fish’s energy was used in body structure rearrangement and incrementing body pigmentation, as an adaptation of cryptobenthic juvenile to the rocky reef.

Abstract:DNA metabarcoding and morphological taxonomic (microscopic) analysis of the gut contents was used to examine diet diversity of seven species of fishes collected from mesopelagic depths (200-1000 m) in the NW Atlantic Ocean Slope Water during Summer 2018 and 2019. Metabarcoding used two gene regions: V9 hypervariable region of nuclear 18S rRNA and mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (COI). V9 sequences were classified into 14 invertebrate prey groups, excluding fish due to predator swamping. Ecological network analysis was used to evaluate relative strengths of predator-prey linkages. Multivariate statistical analysis revealed consistently distinct diets of four fish species in 2018 and/or 2019: Argyropelecus aculeatus, Chauliodus sloani, Hygophum hygomii , and Sigmops elongatus . Three other species analyzed ( Malacosteus niger, Nemichthys scolopaceus , and Scopelogadus beanii ) showed more variability between sampling years. COI sequences were classified into eight invertebrate prey groups, within which prey species were detected and identified. Considering all predator species together, a total of 77 prey species were detected with a minimum of 1,000 COI sequences, including 22 copepods, 18 euphausiids, and 7 amphipods. Morphological prey counts were classified into seven taxonomic groups, including a gelatinous group comprised of soft-bodied organisms. The ocean twilight zone or is home to exceptional diversity and biomass of marine fish, which are key players in deep sea food webs. This study used integrative morphological-molecular analysis to provide new insights into trophic relationships and sources of productivity for mesopelagic fishes, including identification of key prey species, recognition of the importance of gelatinous prey, and characterization of differences in diet among fish predators in the NW Atlantic Slope Water.
