Abstract:Quantitative assessments of the capacity of marine reserves to restore historical fish body-size distributions require extensive repeated sampling to map the phenotypic responses of target populations to protection. However, the "no take" status of marine reserves oftentimes precludes repeated sampling within their borders and, as a result, our current understanding of the capacity of marine reserves to restore historical body-size distributions remains almost entirely reliant on independent, static visual surveys. To overcome this challenge, we promote the application of a traditional fisheries tool known as a "back-calculation", which allows for the estimation of fish body lengths from otolith annuli distances. This practical application was pursued in this study, using data collected in five marine reserves and adjacent fished reefs in the Philippines, to investigate spatiotemporal disparities in length-at-age of the brown surgeonfish, Acanthurus nigrofuscus. The spatial component of our analyses revealed that 1) A. nigrofuscus were phenotypically similar between marine reserves and fished reefs during their early life history; 2) marine reserve and fished reef populations diverged into significantly different length-at-age morphs between ages three and six, in which protected fish were predominantly larger than conspecifics in fished reefs; and 3) A. nigrofuscus returned to a state of general phenotypic similarity during later life. The temporal component of our analyses revealed that younger generations of A. nigrofuscus exhibited significant, positive year effects that were maintained until age eight, indicating that, within the significant age cohorts, younger generations were significantly larger than older generations.
Fast shape changes prior to settlement for a temperate cryptobenthic fish: an approach using geometric morphometrics and otoliths

Abstract:Important morphological and ecological modifications occur during the transition between pelagic and demersal phases in marine fish. However, it is still unknown how fast these shape changes may occur. We studied the shape changes of a common cryptobenthic fish, the triplefin Helcogrammoides chilensis (Cancino, 1960) during the shift from pelagic larvae to recently settled individuals, along rocky shores in central Chile during the austral summers of 2020 and 2021. The working hypothesis was that larval stages would show more allometry and faster shape changes in the head and the paired fins insertion than benthic juveniles, in preparation for their new environment. Shape changes were analyzed utilizing landmark-based geometric morphometrics, while age was estimated using sagittal otolith microstructure analysis. There was an important overlap in the size (length and weight) between older larvae and recently settled individuals (between 20 and 25 mm SL, and 0.08–0.17 g), nonetheless, the head shape and paired fins were clearly different between stages. Pelagic larvae (46–88 days post hatch) had a shorter pectoral fin base, a frontal mouth opening, and eyes located at the level of the tip of the upper jaw. Meanwhile, recently settled individuals (80–112 days post hatch) had wider, vertically positioned pectoral fins, mouths displaced to a vertical position, and eyes located upper and forward the head. Larvae experienced faster growth rates than settlers (0.24 vs. 0.02 mm day−1, respectively), and the pattern of ontogenetic shape changes decreased two orders of magnitude after settlement. It is plausible that after the pelagic–demersal shift most of the fish’s energy was used in body structure rearrangement and incrementing body pigmentation, as an adaptation of cryptobenthic juvenile to the rocky reef.

Abstract:During ontogeny, animals often undergo significant shape and size changes, coinciding with ecological shifts. This is evident in parrotfishes (Eupercaria: Labridae), which experience notable ecological shifts during development, transitioning from carnivorous diets as larvae and juveniles to herbivorous and omnivorous diets as adults, using robust beaks and skulls for feeding on coral skeletons and other hard substrates. These ontogenetic shifts mirror their evolutionary history, as parrotfishes are known to have evolved from carnivorous wrasse ancestors. Parallel shifts at ontogenetic and phylogenetic levels may have resulted in similar evolutionary and ontogenetic allometric trajectories within parrotfishes. To test this hypothesis, using micro-computed tomography (μCT) scanning and three-dimensional geometric morphometrics, we analyse the effects of size on the skull shape of the striped parrotfish Scarus iseri and compare its ontogenetic allometry to the evolutionary allometries of 57 parrotfishes and 162 non-parrotfish wrasses. The young S. iseri have skull shapes resembling non-parrotfish wrasses and grow towards typical adult parrotfish forms as they mature. There was a significant relationship between size and skull shapes and strong evidence for parallel ontogenetic and evolutionary slopes in parrotfishes. Our findings suggest that morphological changes associated with the ecological shift characterizing interspecific parrotfish evolution are conserved in their intraspecific ontogenies.

Abstract:Aim Phenotypic shifts are commonly observed when animals face insular habitat change and may reflect ongoing stresses on individuals. However, the generality and the driving processes of this 'island rule' remain equivocal, notably in amphibians. Here, we investigate both morphological and dietary shifts in a frog using a mosaic of human-created islands to assess the potential operating mechanisms underlying these phenotypic responses. Location Thousand Island Lake, China. Taxon The Chinese piebald odorous frog, Odorrana schmackeri. Methods We compared body size between insular and mainland populations and between sexes. We examined the potential underlying mechanisms regarding body size shifts using structural equation modelling (SEM). Finally, we analysed changes in diet composition and compared intersexual diet overlap between islands and mainland sites. Results We found insular dwarfism in female but not male frogs. Meanwhile, insular females also had smaller gape widths than mainland females after accounting for snout-vent lengths (SVLs). According to SEMs, resource availability had a direct positive effect on body size. Finally, diet composition differed between the island and mainland populations but only in females. Males and females on islands exhibited greater overlaps in the diet. Main conclusions In contrast with most studies in amphibians, we found insular dwarfism rather than gigantism in females. The smaller gape width after accounting for SVL in insular females suggests potential changes in prey utilization or food availability on these human-created islands. This notion is further supported by the differentiation of diet composition between island and mainland females. The higher diet overlap between sexes implies stronger intersexual competition for food resources after habitat fragmentation. Overall, we found rapid shifts in morphology and diet in frogs, which might result from habitat fragmentation in only 50 years and underscore the need to consider intersexual differences when assessing responses of species to anthropogenic disturbances.
Size structuring and allometric scaling relationships in coral reef fishes

Abstract:Temperate marine fish communities are often size-structured, with predators consuming increasingly larger prey and feeding at higher trophic levels as they grow. Gape limitation and ontogenetic diet shifts are key mechanisms by which size structuring arises in these communities. Little is known, however, about size structuring in coral reef fishes. Here, we aimed to advance understanding of size structuring in coral reef food webs by examining the evidence for these mechanisms in two groups of reef predators. Given the diversity of feeding modes amongst coral reef fishes, we also compared gape size-body size allometric relationships across functional groups to determine whether they are reliable indicators of size structuring. We used gut content analysis and quantile regressions of predator size-prey size relationships to test for evidence of gape limitation and ontogenetic niche shifts in reef piscivores (n = 13 species) and benthic invertivores (n = 3 species). We then estimated gape size-body size allometric scaling coefficients for 21 different species from four functional groups, including herbivores/detritivores, which are not expected to be gape-limited. We found evidence of both mechanisms for size structuring in coral reef piscivores, with maximum prey size scaling positively with predator body size, and ontogenetic diet shifts including prey type and expansion of prey size. There was, however, little evidence of size structuring in benthic invertivores. Across species and functional groups, absolute and relative gape sizes were largest in piscivores as expected, but gape size-body size scaling relationships were not indicative of size structuring. Instead, relative gape sizes and mouth morphologies may be better indicators. Our results provide evidence that coral reef piscivores are size-structured and that gape limitation and ontogenetic niche shifts are the mechanisms from which this structure arises. Although gape allometry was not indicative of size structuring, it may have implications for ecosystem function: positively allometric gape size-body size scaling relationships in herbivores/detritivores suggests that loss of large-bodied individuals of these species will have a disproportionately negative impact on reef grazing pressure.

Abstract:The fish body shape is a key factor that influences multiple traits such as swimming, foraging, mating, migrations, and predator avoidance. The present study describes the body morphological changes and the growth trajectories during the transformation from 24 to 54 days post-hatching in the golden grey mullet, Chelon auratus, using geometric morphometric analysis (GMA). The results revealed a decrease in morphological variability (i.e., morphological disparity) with the somatic growth. The main changes affected head size, elongation, and widening of the body. Given that this variability could affect the metabolism, some individuals with different morphologies and in different ontogenetic developmental stages were selected to estimate their potential respiration rate using the Electron Transport System (ETS) analysis. Differences were detected depending on the developmental stage, and being significantly smaller after 54 days post-hatching. Finally, a multivariate linear regression indicated that the specific ETS activity was partially related to the fish length and body shape. Thus, our findings emphasized the relevance of larval morphological variability for understanding the physiological processes that occur during the development.

Abstract:Bull sharks display shifts in functional demands across the body through ontogeny. Morphological scaling differs between life stages and sexes. These results highlight the importance of large sample sizes in studies of shark morphometry. Recent studies have uncovered mosaic patterns of allometric and isometric growth underlying ontogenetic shifts in the body form of elasmobranch species (shark and rays). It is thought that shifts in trophic and spatial ecology through ontogeny drive these morphological changes; however, additional hypotheses relating to developmental constraints have also been posed. The bull shark (Carcharhinus leucas) is a large‐bodied coastal shark that exhibits strong ontogenetic shifts in trophic and spatial ecology. In this study, we utilise a large data set covering a large number of morphological structures to reveal ontogenetic shifts in the body form of C. leucas, stratifying analyses by sex and size classes to provide fine‐scale, more ecomorphologically relevant results. Our results indicate shifts in functional demands across the body through ontogeny, driven by selective pressures relating to trophic and spatial ecology driving the evolution of allometry. We also find significant differences in scaling trends between life stages, and between the sexes, highlighting the importance of utilising large, diverse datasets that can be stratified in this way to improve our understanding of elasmobranch morphological evolution. Ultimately, we discuss the implications of these results for existing ecomorphological hypotheses regarding the evolution of specific morphological structures, and pose novel hypotheses where relevant.

Abstract:The abundance and distribution of demersal fishes rely on larvae successfully settling from the pelagic environment to a benthic habitat and their subsequent survival. With high mortality rates during this life stage, settling to a habitat that maximizes survival is critical. However, relationships between settlement choices and subsequent survival are poorly understood and may vary among species with different habitat preferences. To test this, we focused on five congeneric ( Pomacentrus ) damselfish species that are known to differ in their habitat choices and explored whether habitat associations at settlement influenced survival. Newly settled individuals were tagged and monitored daily for two weeks to estimate natural mortality rates. Morphological attributes of fish and characteristics of settlement habitats, including depth, rugosity, benthic substrata, and local fish assemblages, were used to predict mortality. We found that some species displayed stronger associations with specific benthic substrata at settlement, but contrary to expectations, these selected habitat characteristics were relatively weak predictors of survivorship. Our survival analysis revealed that the best predictors of survivorship were rugosity ( P. adelus and P . amboinensis ) and two morphological traits, body depth and ocellus size ( P. chrysurus and P. adelus ). Interestingly, we found that P. moluccensis that settled in areas of high coverage of mounding coral experienced increased mortality. Of the remaining substrata, analysis showed that instead of associating with habitat characteristics enhancing survivorship, individuals tended not to associate with habitats characteristics that increased mortality (e.g., Turbinaria and sand). This study highlights the species-specific drivers of early post-settlement mortality in coral reef fishes.

Influence of prey body characteristics and performance on predator selection

Abstract:At the time of settlement to the reef environment, coral reef fishes differ in a number of characteristics that may influence their survival during a predatory encounter. This study investigated the selective nature of predation by both a multi-species predator pool, and a single common predator (Pseudochromis fuscus), on the reef fish, Pomacentrus amboinensis. The study focused on the early post-settlement period of P. amboinensis, when mortality, and hence selection, is known to be highest. Correlations between nine different measures of body condition/performance were examined at the time of settlement, in order to elucidate the relationships between different traits. Single-predator (P. fuscus) choice trials were conducted in 57.4-l aquaria with respect to three different prey characteristics [standard length (SL), body weight and burst swimming speed], whilst multi-species trials were conducted on open patch reefs, manipulating prey body weight only. Relationships between the nine measures of condition/performance were generally poor, with the strongest correlations occurring between the morphological measures and within the performance measures. During aquaria trials, P. fuscus was found to be selective with respect to prey SL only, with larger individuals being selected significantly more often. Multi-species predator communities, however, were selective with respect to prey body weight, with heavier individuals being selected significantly more often than their lighter counterparts. Our results suggest that under controlled conditions, body length may be the most important prey characteristic influencing prey survival during predatory encounters with P. fuscus. In such cases, larger prey size may actually be a distinct disadvantage to survival. However, these relationships appear to be more complex under natural conditions, where the expression of prey characteristics, the selectivity fields of a number of different predators, their relative abundance, and the action of external environmental characteristics, may all influence which individuals survive.

Abstract:Several elasmobranch species undergo shifts in body proportions during their ontogenetic growth. Such morphological changes could reflect variation in diet, locomotion, or, more broadly, in the species' interactions with their environment. However, to date, only a few studies have been conducted on this topic, and most of them focused on particular body regions. In the present study, the ontogenetic growth of five different demersal shark species was investigated by using both traditional linear morphometry of the entire body and shape analysis of the caudal fin. A total of 449 sharks were analysed: 95 little gulper sharks, 80 longnose spurdogs, 103 kitefin sharks, 124 velvet belly lanternsharks, and 47 angular roughsharks. From each specimen, 36 linear morphometric measurements were taken. While a first canonical analysis of principal coordinates ruled out the possibility of different growth patterns between males and females, the same analysis statistically discriminated between small and large individuals in every species based on their morphology. A Similarity Percentage analysis revealed that the most important measurements in distinguishing these two groups were those related to body lengths, indicating that large individuals are more elongated than small individuals. The shape analysis of caudal fins revealed allometric growth during ontogenetic development, with adult individuals having a wider fin (discriminant analysis, p < 0.05). These findings could be related to changes in predatory skills, supporting the hypothesis of a shift in the ecological role that these sharks play in their environment, thus providing new essential information for their conservation.
Insights into ontogenetic scaling and morphological variation in sharks from near-term brown smooth-hound ( ) embryos

Abstract:Elasmobranchs (sharks and rays) exhibit a wide range of body forms adapted to various ecological niches. Body form differs not only between species, but between life stages of individual species as a result of ontogenetic allometry. In sharks, it has been proposed that these ontogenetic shifts in body form result from shifts in trophic and/or spatial ecology (the allometric niche shift hypothesis). Alternatively, it has been suggested that ontogenetic allometry may result from intrinsic morphological constraints associated with increasing body size – e.g. to counteract shifts in form-function relationships that occur as a function of size and could compromise locomotory performance. One major limitation affecting our understanding of ontogenetic scaling in sharks is that existing studies focus on postpartum ontogeny – ignoring the period of growth that occurs prior to birth/hatching. In this study, we report ontogenetic growth trajectories from 39 near-term brown smooth hound ( ) embryos taken from manually collected measurements. We found that unlike most other species and later ontogenetic stages of , these embryos predominantly grow isometrically, and appear to display relatively high levels of morphological disparity. These results provide rudimentary support for the allometric niche shift hypothesis (as in the absence of ontogenetic niche shifts isometry dominates body-form scaling) and provide important insight into early shark ontogeny and morphological/developmental evolution.

Abstract:<h3>Background</h3><p>Sparid fishes of the genus <em>Diplodus</em> show a complex life history. Juveniles have adaptations well suited to life in the water column. When fishes recruit into the adult population, individuals develop a radically differentiated shape that reflects their adaptation to the new benthic environment typical of the adult.</p><p>A comparative analysis of ontogenetic trajectories was performed to assess the presence of divergence in the developmental pattern By using a geometric morphometric approach, we investigated the pattern of shape variation across ontogenetic stages that span from early settlement to the adult stage in four species of the genus <em>Diplodus</em>. Landmarks were collected on the whole body of fishes to quantify the phenotypic variation along two well defined life stages, i.e. juvenile and adult.</p><p>A comparative analysis of ontogenetic trajectories was performed to assess the presence of divergence in the developmental pattern. Subsequently, we investigated the patterns of integration and modularity as proxy for the alteration of the developmental processes. This have allowed to give an insight in morphological developmental patterns across ecologically and ontogenetically differentiated life stages and to investigate the process leading to the adult shape.</p><h3>Result</h3><p>Our results suggest that the origin of morphological novelties in <em>Diplodus</em> spp. arise from shifts of the ontogenetic trajectories during development. During the settlement phase, the juveniles' morphological shapes converge towards similar regions of the morphospace. When the four species approach the transition between settlement and recruitment, we observe the lowest level of inter- and intra-specific disparity. After this transition we detect an abrupt shift of ontogenetic trajectories, i.e. the path taken by species during development, that led to highly divergent adult phenotypes.</p><h3>Discussion</h3><p>We suggest that the evolution of new ecomorphologies, better suited to exploit different niches (pelagic vs. benthonic) and reduce inter-specific competition in <em>Diplodus</em> spp., are related to the shift in the ontogenetic trajectory that in turn is associated to changes in modularity and integration pattern.</p>

Nearshore environmental conditions influence larval growth and shape changes for a temperate rocky reef fish

Abstract:Coastal upwelling and other oceanographic processes, exert influences on phenotypic traits of early life stages of marine fishes. However, it remains to elucidate the environmental effects on the morphology of fish larvae. Using geometric morphometrics and otolith microstructure of a temperate rocky reef fish, the labrisomid blenny <em class="EmphasisTypeItalic">Auchenionchus crinitus</em> (Labrisomidae), we studied the larval growth, mortality and morphospace of four consecutive cohorts, hatched between austral winter and summer off central Chile. We hypothesize that coastal environmental conditions will influence early life traits of this cryptobenthic fish. The winter cohort, which inhabited colder and well-mixed nearshore waters, grew more slowly and had a more hydrodynamic head shape, while the summer cohort, which lived in warmer and stratified waters, grew faster, but had a more robust shape. Cohorts expressed less ontogenetic allometry as seasons progressed, suggesting that the seasonal increment in water temperature reduces the shape changes with size during larval development. Also, slower- and faster-growing larvae showed large variation from the consensus shape, e.g. had the largest shape disparity. Nonetheless, all cohorts showed similar mortality rates during the first month of life. Finally, increases in zonal wind stress (i.e. sea breeze) and decreases in the sea temperatures (i.e. upwelling events) increased the growth rates of older (> 15 days old) larvae. Therefore, for this cryptobenthic species, differences in growth rate and body shape are related to the seasonal increase in water temperature, and local-scale meteorological conditions.

Abstract:The community of deep‐water pelagic fishes in the Bay of Biscay has shown a great diversity of ontogenetic change strategies. Some species have undergone changes in both habitat use (use of the water column) and food sources (changes in δ15N values), while others have undergone only one of these changes. Finally, some species did not appear to have undergone any ontogenetic changes. During ontogeny, the increase in body size forces species to make trade‐offs between their food requirements, the conditions necessary for growth and reproduction as well as the avoidance of predators. Ontogenetic changes are leading species to seek out habitats and food resources that meet their needs. To this end, ontogenetic changes in nocturnal habitat (vertical use of the water column) and in the type of food resources (based on stable isotopes of nitrogen) were investigated in 12 species of deep pelagic fish from the Bay of Biscay in the Northeast Atlantic. Our results revealed the existence of major differences in the ontogenetic strategies employed by deep pelagic fishes. Some species showed ontogenetic changes in both vertical habitat use and food resources (e.g. Jewel lanternfish (Lampanyctus crocodilus) and Atlantic soft pout (Melanostigma atlanticum)). In contrast, other species showed no ontogenetic change (e.g. Koefoed's searsid (Searsia koefoedi) and Lancet fish (Notoscopelus kroyeri)). Some species only changed food resources (e.g. Spotted lanternfish (Myctophum punctatum), Spotted barracudina (Arctozenus risso) and Stout sawpalate (Serrivomer beanii)), while others seemed to be influenced more by depth than by trophic features (e.g. Bluntsnout smooth‐head (Xenodermichthys copei) and Olfer's Hatchetfish (Argyropelecus olfersii)). These results suggest that to meet their increasing energy requirements during ontogeny, some species have adopted a strategy of shifting their food resources (larger prey or prey with a higher trophic level), while others seemed to maintain their food resources but are most likely increasing the quantity of prey ingested. As fish species can have different functional roles during their development within ecosystems, characterising ontogenetic changes in mesopelagic fish species is a crucial step to be considered in future research aimed at understanding and modelling the complexity of deep‐pelagic food webs.

Dietary resilience of coral reef fishes to habitat degradation

Abstract:The ability of consumers to adjust their diet in response to resource shifts is a key mechanism allowing the persistence of populations and underlying species adaptive capacity. Yet on coral reefs, one of the marine habitats most vulnerable to global change, the extent to which species alter their diet remains poorly understood. Here, we integrated DNA-based gut content analyses (metabarcoding), otolith analysis, body condition, and field surveys to test how diet can mediate effects of habitat degradation on two invertivorous fishes: Chaetodon capistratus, a browser, and Hypoplectrus puella, an active predator. Metabarcoding revealed significant dietary variation in both species across a habitat gradient. However, the response was more pronounced in the browser, whose diet was anthozoan-dominated on healthy reefs, whereas annelid-dominated on degraded reefs. We found reduced growth and body condition on degraded reefs in the browser but not the active predator. Our results reveal that dietary versatility can serve as a mechanism to cope with degraded environments, but that species differ as to whether these changes are sufficient to buffer from changes in habitat. We detected intraspecific dietary variation across sites that suggests food webs and energy flow differ at relatively small scales between healthy and degraded reefs.

Abstract:Fish stocks can be defined by differences in their distribution, life history, and genetics. Managing fish based on stock structure is integral to successful management of a species because fishing may affect stocks disproportionately. Genetic and environmental differences can affect the shape and growth of otoliths and these differences may be indicative of stock structure. To investigate the potential for speciation or stock structure in giant grenadier, Albatrossia pectoralis, we quantified the shape of female giant grenadier otoliths and compared body growth rates for fish with three otolith shapes; shape types were classified visually by an experienced giant grenadier age reader, and were not defined by known distribution or life history differences. We found extreme variation in otolith shape among individuals; however, the shapes were a gradation and not clearly defined into three groups. The two more extreme shapes, visually defined as "hatchet" and "comb", were discernable based on principal component analyses of elliptical Fourier descriptors, and the "mixed" shape overlapped both of the extreme shapes. Fish with hatchet-shaped otoliths grew faster than fish with comb-shaped otoliths. A genetic test (cytochrome c oxidase 1 used by the Fish Barcode of Life Initiative) showed almost no variability among samples, indicating that the samples were all from one species. The lack of young specimens makes it difficult to link otolith shape and growth difference to life history. In addition, shape could not be correlated with adult movement patterns because giant grenadiers experience 100% mortality after capture and, therefore, cannot be tagged and released. Despite these limitations, the link between body growth and otolith shape indicates measurable differences that deserve more study.

Abstract:Body shape is a fundamental metric of animal diversity affecting critical behavioral and ecological dynamics and conservation status, yet previously available methods capture only a fraction of total body-shape variance. Here we use structure-from-motion (SFM) 3D photogrammetry to generate digital 3D models of adult fishes from the Lower Mississippi Basin, one of the most diverse temperate-zone freshwater faunas on Earth, and 3D geometric morphometrics to capture morphologically distinct shape variables, interpreting principal components as growth fields. The mean body shape in this fauna resembles plesiomorphic teleost fishes, and the major dimensions of body-shape disparity are similar to those of other fish faunas worldwide. Major patterns of body-shape disparity are structured by phylogeny, with nested clades occupying distinct portions of the morphospace, most of the morphospace occupied by multiple distinct clades, and one clade (Acanthomorpha) accounting for over half of the total body shape variance. In contrast to previous studies, variance in body depth (59.4%) structures overall body-shape disparity more than does length (31.1%), while width accounts for a non-trivial (9.5%) amount of the total body-shape disparity.

Abstract:The viability of fish during their early developmental stages is pivotal for population recruitment, a period during which individuals are frequently confronted with significant risks of starvation. There is limited knowledge regarding Odontobutis potamophila food selectivity before its transition to feeding on fish. Thus, this study aimed to elucidate its prey composition and diet shift from 0 to 22 days after hatching. We also examined early allometric growth patterns to confirm whether there was a correlation between the rapid onset of exogenous feeding in juvenile carnivorous fish and the earlier appearance of inflection points in various morphological traits. Cluster analysis showed a gradual shift in prey composition from nauplii to predominantly cladocerans and copepods as individuals grew. This adaptive shift in diet revealed a mechanism whereby the larger the individual, the larger the size of the bait ingested, and the faster the growth rate. The results of the allometric growth study demonstrated that O. potamophila emerged from the membrane with a total length of 6.53 ± 0.51 mm and a body weight of 1.93 ± 0.56 mg. The positive allometric growth of body weight relative to total length provides the required energy for organ development and onset of the juvenile stage. Feeding commences at one day post-hatching, with the yolk sac fully depleted by day 6, thereby facilitating the transition into the exogenous nutritional phase as early as possible. The initial manifestation of certain morphological growth inflection points occurred predominantly around 10 days of age, concomitant with the advent of a shift in feeding habits. The prey composition, diet shifts, and growth patterns of early individuals with equilibrium strategy, represented by O. potamophila, have important implications for improving the survival of early life stages, thereby providing new strategies for population replenishment.

Abstract:Mimesis is a relatively widespread phenomenon among reef fish, but the ontogenetic processes relevant for mimetic associations in fish are still poorly understood. In the present study, the allometric growth of two allopatric leaf-mimetic species of ephippid fishes, Chaetodipterus faber from the Atlantic and Platax orbicularis from the Indo-Pacific, was analyzed using ten morphological variables. The development of fins was considered owing to the importance of these structures for mimetic behaviors during early life stages. Despite the anatomical and behavioral similarities in both juvenile and adult stages, C. faber and P. orbicularis showed distinct patterns of growth. The overall shape of C. faber transforms from a rounded-shape in mimetic juveniles to a lengthened profile in adults, while in P. orbicularis, juveniles present an oblong profile including dorsal and anal fins, with relative fin size diminishing while the overall profile grows rounder in adults. Although the two species are closely-related, the present results suggest that growth patterns in C. faber and P. orbicularis are different, and are probably independent events in ephippids that have resulted from similar selective processes.
