Abstract:Soil amended with single biochar or nitrogen (N) fertilizer has frequently been reported to alter soil nitrification process due to its impact on soil properties. However, little is known about the dynamic response of nitrification and ammonia-oxidizers to the combined application of biochar and N fertilizer in intensive vegetable soil. In this study, an incubation experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of biochar and N fertilizer application on soil nitrification, abundance and community shifts of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) in Hangzhou greenhouse vegetable soil. Results showed that single application of biochar had no significant effect on soil net nitrification rates and ammonia-oxidizers. Conversely, the application of only N fertilizer and N fertilizer + biochar significantly increased net nitrification rate and the abundance of AOB rather than AOA, and only AOB abundance was significantly correlated with soil net nitrification rate. Moreover, the combined application of N fertilizer and biochar had greater effect on AOB communities than that of the only N fertilizers, and the relative abundance of 156 bp T-RF ( Nitrosospira cluster 3c) decreased but 60 bp T-RF ( Nitrosospira cluster 3a and cluster 0) increased to become a single predominant group. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all the AOB sequences were grouped into Nitrosospira cluster, and most of AOA sequences were clustered within group 1.1b. We concluded that soil nitrification was stimulated by the combined application of N fertilizer and biochar via enhancing the abundance and shifting the community composition of AOB rather than AOA in intensive vegetable soil.
Biochar Amendments to Tropical Paddy Soil Increase Rice Yields and Decrease N2O Emissions by Modifying the Genes Involved in Nitrogen Cycling

Abstract:Water management strategies are critical in regulating nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from paddy soils under rice cultivation. Biochar is widely used as an amendment to decrease soil N2O emissions. However, the impacts of biochar amendment on N2O emissions under different water management strategies in paddy soils have not been investigated thoroughly, and the underlying mechanisms remain poorly understood. In particular, the effects of mid-season water drainage, a strategy used for water conservation, need to be better understood. In this study, a pot experiment was conducted including six treatments: alternating dry-wet conditions during the mid-season period without and with 2% (w/w) biochar (AWD1 and AWD2, respectively), continuous flooding during the mid-season period without (CF1) and with 2% (CF2) biochar, and regular mid-season drainage during the mid-season period without (CON1) and with 2% (CON2) biochar. All treatments received inorganic nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers (NPK) administered in a split application. We found that fluxes of N2O emission peaked after the two fertilizers’ additions. No significant difference in the first N2O flux peak was found among different treatments. There also was no difference in the second N2O flux peak in both CF treatments, whereas biochar addition significantly decreased the second N2O flux peak in AWD2 and CON2 treatments. This was mainly due to increased nosZ gene copies and decreased ratios of denitrification and amoA genes to nosZ gene copies. Biochar amendments resulted in significant stimulation of nifH gene copies in the AWD2 treatment. Lastly, biochar increased rice yields in all treatments. Our study suggested that AWD2 was the optimal management strategy for mitigating N2O emissions and improving rice production in this tropical paddy soil.
Biochar's dual role in greenhouse gas emissions: Nitrogen fertilization dependency and mitigation potential

Abstract:Biochar was popularly used for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in vegetable production, but using biochar does not necessarily guarantee a reduction in GHG emissions. Herein, it's meaningful to elucidate the intricate interplay among biochar properties, soil characteristics, and GHG emissions in vegetable production to provide valuable insights for informed and effective mitigation strategies. Therefore, in current research, a meta-analysis of 43 publications was employed to address these issues. The boost-regression analysis results indicated that the performance of biochar in inhibiting N 2 O emissions was most affected by the N application rate both in high and low N application conditions. Besides, biochar had dual roles and showed well performance in reducing GHG emissions under low N input (≤300 kg N ha −1 ), while having the opposite effect during high N input (>300 kg N ha −1 ). Specifically, applying biochar under low N fertilization input could obviously reduce soil N 2 O emissions, CO 2 emissions, and CH 4 emissions by 18.7 %, 17.9 %, and 16.9 %, respectively. However, the biochar application under high N fertilization input significantly ( P < 0.05) increased soil N 2 O emissions, CO 2 emissions, and CH 4 emissions by 39.7 %, 43.0 %, and 27.7 %, respectively. Except for the N application rate, the soil pH, SOC, biochar C/N ratio, biochar pH, and biochar pyrolysis temperature are also the key factors affecting the control of GHG emissions in biochar-amended soils. The findings of this study will contribute to deeper insights into the potential application of biochar in regulating GHG under consideration of N input, offering scientific evidence and guidance for sustainable agriculture management.

Abstract:Biochar is widely used to mitigate nitrogen (N) emissions in global croplands. However, its effectiveness varies due to spatial disparities in external factors such as soil properties and climate conditions, as well as biochar characteristics such as pH and carbon content. In this study, we used a molecular model to assess the distinct impacts of biochar and soil on soil N emissions. We employed a back-propagation neural network optimized using a genetic algorithm (GA-BPNN) to simulate N emissions in global croplands, utilizing data from 351 peer-reviewed papers. Then, a global biochar application strategy aimed at optimizing the reduction of N emissions across global croplands was devised by aligning biochar and soil parameters. Our findings indicate that the high electrophilic and nucleophilic properties of biochar's reactive surface significantly contribute to the reduction of soil N emissions. The GA-BPNN-based machine learning (ML) technology demonstrated superior predictive performance (with R 2 ranging from 0.47 to 0.69) in predicting changes in soil N emissions post-biochar application compared to other machine learning algorithms. Our simulations show that optimized global biochar application increases NH 3 volatilization but achieves the most significant reduction in global cropland N emissions, amounting to 16.04 Tg N yr -1 and representing approximately 28.45% of the estimated total N emissions from global croplands, all while preserving crop yields. Therefore, aligning biochar properties with specific soil parameters and environmental conditions could be a promising strategy for mitigating N emissions in global croplands and addressing climate degradation.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is the third important long‐lived greenhouse gas next to carbon dioxide and methane and croplands are considered biogeochemical hotspots of soil N2O emissions. To reduce soil N2O and other greenhouse emissions, climate‐smart agricultural practices including biochar application have been applied. Many studies have been conducted with biochar application but results from these studies are not conclusive. To address this issue, meta‐analysis, a quantitative review that synthesizes results from multiple independent studies, has been widely used. The results from different meta‐analyses also differ but are seldomly evaluated. In this study, we evaluated meta‐analyses on the effects of biochar application on soil N2O emissions. A grand mean response ratio was further proposed to estimate an overall effect and the impacts of experiment setting, properties of biochar and soil, and agricultural practices. We found 18 meta‐analysis papers were published between 2014 and 2022. Sample size (publications or experiments) varied from less than 30 to more than 1000, with a mean sample size of 275. Response ratio was calculated in all studies except one. While four meta‐analyses did not find a significant effect of biochar application on soil N2O emissions, all others reported reductions of soil N2O emissions, but the magnitude ranged from ‐10.5% to ‐54.8%. Synthesizing all results from these meta‐analyses, we found that biochar application overall significantly reduced the soil N2O emissions by 38.8%. The impacts increased with experimental duration till one and half years and reduced after that. Biochar application rate and C:N ratio had large influence on the effects of biochar application on soil N2O emissions. This study demonstrated that while meta‐analysis provides a more comprehensive and better estimation, the inconsistence among these studies may need to be further evaluated. A grand mean response ratio based on meta‐analyses could be more accurate and representative than single meta‐analysis.

On the other hand, biochar carbon storage in soils is confronted with both biochar and soil carbon and nitrogen loss. The superposition of these two influences leads to complex variation in net greenhouse gas emissions from biochar-amended-soils. Nitrogen fertilization is a common agriculture practice in China and worldwide. To study the effects and mechanisms of biochar on soil net greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N2O) under different nitrogen fertilization gradient in a ferrallitic soil, a soil column experiment was conducted. Maize straw derived biochar (pyrolysed at 500 °C) and nitrogen fertilizer (ammonium sulfate) were investigated at varying application rates. It was found that biochar amendment increased CO2 emissions by 51.1%-57.1% and N2O emissions by 50.0%-73.7%, respectively, when soil was incubated with 50 mg N/kg nitrogen fertilization. The N2O emission in soil was dominated by nitrification, and the labile fraction of biochar played the dominant role in increasing soil CO2 and N2O emissions. Therefore, water or acid washing of biochar before its application would significantly reduce the net GHG emissions. When the nitrogen fertilization was applied at the unusually high level of 450 mg N/kg, the N2O emissions mainly came from denitrification. Biochar amendment introduced less soil CO2 emission increment, and suppressed N2O emissions by inhibition of denitrification via adsorption protection mechanism (towards nitrogen) and aeration effect. A chain mechanism has been illustrated and results from this study suggest that biochar is best applied to an environment or the circumstance that maximizes adsorption protection mechanism and aeration effect to achieve total greenhouse gas emission reduction. This study therefore provides basis for the scientific sound application and regulation of biochar amendment in soils.

Abstract:Global warming is one of the eco-environmental problems of most concern to scientists. N 2 O, an atmospheric greenhouse gas, has been widely studied because of its high warming potential. As an excellent soil conditioner, biochar has a very broad research value and application path in the farmland. This work examined the impact of biochar application on N 2 O emissions reduction potential of farmland soils in northern China by meta analysis and path analysis. The results were as follows: the N 2 O emissions reduction potential changes corresponded with different biochar preparation materials, preparation temperature, C/N ratio and pH. Biochar is more suitable for application in soil with a bulk density < 1.3 g cm −3 , sandy loam texture, neutral pH, organic matter content 20–30 g kg −1 , soil C/N ratio 10–20, and total nitrogen < 2 g kg −1 . At the same time, the maximum reduction of N 2 O emissions can be achieved in a scenario where the biochar is applied at 20 t ha −1 - 40 t ha −1 and the application of nitrogen fertilizer is 100–200 kg N ha −1 . Under the above ideal conditions, this study selected the data of soil mineralized nitrogen (X 1 ), soil organic matter content (X 2 ), soil water content (X 3 ), average temperature (X 4 ), total nitrogen (X 5 ), and N 2 O emissions (Y) for correlation analysis and path analysis, and finally obtained the multiple stepwise regression equation between N 2 O emissions and various impact factors as follows: Y = -45.9102 + 0.6874X 1 + 0.4634X 2 + 0.3249X 3 + 0.2698X 4 + 0.2218X 5 ( R 2 = 0.826, p < 0.01, n = 87). The direct relationships between N 2 O and soil mineralized nitrogen and soil organic matter content were very significant ( P < 0.01). The second is soil water content, average temperature and total nitrogen. Indirect relationships between N 2 O and average temperature, total nitrogen and mineralized nitrogen were significant ( P < 0.05).

Abstract:Background and aimsModern agriculture is driving the release of excessive amounts of reactive nitrogen (N) from the soils to the environment, thereby threatening ecological balances and functions. The amendment of soils with biochar has been suggested as a promising solution to regulate the soil N cycle and reduce N effluxes. However, a comprehensive and quantitative understanding of biochar impacts on soil N cycle remains elusive.MethodsA meta-analysis was conducted to assess the influence of biochar on different variables involved in soil N cycle using data compiled across 208 peer-reviewed studies.ResultsOn average, biochar beneficially increases symbiotic biological N2 fixation (63%), improves plant N uptake (11%), reduces soil N2O emissions (32%), and decreases soil N leaching (26%), but it poses a risk of increased soil NH3 volatilization (19%). Biochar-induced increase in soil NH3 volatilization commonly occurs in studies with soils of low buffering capacity (soil pH ≤ 5, organic carbon≤10 g kg−1, or clay texture), the application of high alkaline biochar (straw- or manure-derived biochar), or biochar at high application rate (>40 t ha−1). Besides, if the pyrolytic syngas is not purified, the biochar production process may be a potential source of N2O and NOx emissions which correspond to 2–4% and 3–24% of the feedstock-N, respectively.ConclusionsThis study suggests that to make biochar beneficial for decreasing soil N effluxes, clean advanced pyrolysis technique and adapted use of biochar are of great importance.

Abstract:Biochar application has the potential for mitigating N2O emissions from agricultural soils and has been suggested as a management practice to ameliorate soil fertility and increase crop productivity. Nevertheless, the influence of biochar addition on N2O emissions from soils with different pH levels is not yet clear, which results in a poor understanding of the mechanisms regarding biochar application to soil N2O mitigation. A 40-day incubation experiment was carried out in the present study to investigate the impact of biochar on N2O emissions from soils with different natural pH. Four treatments (control, nitrogen fertilizer application, biochar amendment, and N plus biochar amendment) were set up separately in soils with three different natural pH levels (acidic vegetable soil, neutral rice soil, and alkaline soil). Our results showed that adding biochar significantly decreased N2O emissions by 20.8% and 47.6% in acidic vegetable soil for both N and no N addition treatments, respectively. For neutral and alkaline soils, the reduction of N2O emissions by biochar amendment was only significant for N addition treatments in alkaline soil. Soil pH and NO3−-N concentration were significantly affected by biochar amendment (soil pH increased by 1.43–1.56, 0.57–0.70, and 0.29–0.37 units for acidic vegetable soil, neutral rice soil, and alkaline soil, respectively). Thus, biochar amendment could be used as an effective management practice for mitigating N2O emissions from acidic and alkaline soils.

Biochar amendment mitigated N2O emissions from paddy field during the wheat growing season

Abstract:Biochar may variably impact nitrogen (N) transformation and N-cycle-related microbial activities. Yet the mechanism of biochar amendment on nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from agricultural ecosystems remains unclear. Based on a 6-year long-term biochar amendment experiment, we applied a dual isotope (15N–18O) labeling technique with tracing transcriptional genes to differentiate the contribution of nitrifier nitrification (NN), nitrifier denitrification (ND), nitrification-coupled denitrification (NCD) and heterotrophic denitrification (HD) pathway to N2O production. Then the field experiment provided quantitative data on dynamic N2O emissions, soil mineral N and key functional marker gene abundances during the wheat growing season. By using 15N-18O isotope, biochar decreased N2O emission derived from ND (by 45-94%), HD (by 35-46%) and NCD (by 30-64%) compared to the values under N application. Biochar increased the relative contribution of NN to total N2O production as evidenced by the increase in ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, but did not influence the cumulative NN-derived N2O. The field experiment found that the majority of the N2O emissions peaked following fertilization, in parallel with soil NH4+ and nitrite dynamics. Soil N2O emissions during the wheat growing stage were effectively decreased (by 38-48%) by biochar amendment. Based on the correlation analyses and random forest analysis in both microcosm and field experiments, the decrease in nitrite concentration (by 62-65%) and increase in N2O consumption were mainly responsible for net N2O mitigation, as evidenced by the decrease in the ratios of nitrite reductase genes/transcripts (nirS, nirK and fungal nirK) and N2O reductase gene/transcripts (nosZI and nosZII). Based on the extrapolation from microcosm to field, biochar significantly mitigated N2O emissions by weakening the ND processes, since NCD and HD contributed little during the N2O emission "peaks" following urea fertilization. Therefore, emphasis should be put on the ND process and nitrite accumulation during N2O emission peaks and extrapolated to all agroecosystems.

Abstract:Biochar amendment has been proposed as a potential solution for improving soil quality and suppressing greenhouse gas emission. Considering the serious nitrogen fertilizer overuse problem in China, it is important to investigate the effect of biochar on soil with excess nitrogen fertilizer. Therefore, two sets of soil column experiments were conducted to explore the effect of biochar on N2O emission from nitrogen fertilizer-overused soil. Three types of biochar (biochars pyrolzed at 300, 500 and 700°C, respectively) and one type of nitrogen fertilizer (ammonium sulfate) were investigated at varying application rates. It was found that N2O emission was related to both biochar and N-fertilizer application rates, and increased N2O emission was negatively correlated with the TC/IN ratio (the ratio of total carbon to inorganic nitrogen) after biochar application. The soil TC/IN ratio determined the ammonium utilization pathway, affecting the intensity of nitrification and N2O emission. When the TC/IN ratio was relatively high (>60), suppressed nitrification led to the suppression of N2O emission. Conversely, enhanced nitrification when the TC/IN ratio was relatively low (<45) caused the promotion of N2O emission. In conclusion, biochar's suppression of soil N2O emission was conditional and biochar should be applied in a proper ratio to nitrogen fertilizer to avoid excessive N2O emission.
Effects of biochar application on soil nitrogen transformation, microbial functional genes, enzyme activity, and plant nitrogen uptake: A meta‐analysis of field studies

Abstract:Biochar application can influence soil nitrogen (N) cycle through biological and abiotic processes. However, studies on comprehensive examination of the effects of biochar application on microbially mediated N-cycling processes (N mineralization, nitrification, denitrification, and fixation) and soil N fate (i.e., plant N uptake, soil N2O emission, and N leaching) are warranted. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of biochar application on soil N transformation, microbial functional gene abundance, enzyme activity, and plant N uptake. To achieve the objective of this study, a meta-analysis involving 131 peer-reviewed field experiments was conducted. Results showed that field application of biochar significantly enhanced soil NH4+ and NO3− content, N mineralization, nitrification, N2 fixation, and plant N uptake by 5.3%, 3.7%, 15.3%, 48.5%, 14.7%, and 18.3%, respectively, but reduced N2O emissions and N leaching by 14.9% and 10.9%, respectively. Biochar application also increased the abundance of soil denitrifying/nitrifying genes (amoA, narG, nirS/nirK+S, and nosZ), proportion of N2 fixation bacteria, and N-acetyl-glucosaminidase activity by 18.6%–87.6%. Soil NO3− content was positively correlated with AOA-amoA abundance, and soil N2O emission was positively correlated with the relative abundance of genes (e.g., amoA, narG, and nirS/nirK) involved in N2O production. Furthermore, long-term biochar application tended to increase AOB-amoA and nirK+S abundance, especially soil N2O emission and N leaching. Overall, the findings of this study indicated that biochar application accelerated microbially mediated N-cycling processes under field conditions, thereby enhancing soil N availability and plant productivity. However, long-term biochar application may increase N losses. Therefore, future studies should be conducted to examine the effect of long-term biochar application on the soil N cycle and the underlying microbial mechanisms.
N2O Emissions Mitigation in Acidic Soil Following Biochar Application Under Different Moisture Regimes

Abstract:Managing soil pH has been recognized as one of the promising options for N2O emission mitigation in acidic soils. Rice-straw biochar (BC) application to acidic soils can not only ameliorate soil acidity but also influence N2O emissions. We investigated the impact of various levels of rice-straw-derived biochar, a control (no biochar), 2% biochar, and 4% biochar under 50% and 90% water-filled pore space (WFPS) values. In comparison with the application of biochar at 2%, the application of biochar at 4% more pronouncedly altered soil properties (pH, ammonium (NH4+-N), nitrate (NO3-N), microbial biomass carbon (MBC), and abundance of nosZ and nirK genes). Similarly, more noticeable changes in soil properties were noted under 90% WFPS than under 50% WFPS. The soil pH increased from 5.67 to 7.29 with the 4% biochar application. In comparison with those following the 2% biochar application and the control, soil mineral N and the abundance of nosZ and nirK genes following the 4% biochar application were more augmented, thereby leading to a remarkable reduction in soil N2O emissions. The MBC content in the soil also increased with the BC applications, and the maximum MBC contents of 655 and 428 mg kg−1 dry soil were recorded with the 4% biochar application under 50% and 90% WFPS, respectively. Moreover, in comparison with the control, 4% BC mitigated soil N2O emissions by 83%, whereas cumulative N2O emissions were mitigated by 49%. In comparison with 90% WFPS, 50% WFPS produced 35% more N2O emissions. However, the biochar applications significantly (p < 0.05) reduced N2O emissions under both WFPS values owing to an increase in soil pH, which activated mineral N (NH4+-N and NO3−-N) and enhanced the abundance of nosZ and nirK genes. These results suggest that biochar applications can substantially diminish soil N2O emissions by triggering soil pH, soil C and N pools, and the abundance of nosZ and nirK genes.

Abstract:Biochar application to agricultural soil is an appealing approach to mitigate nitrous oxide (N2O) and methane (CH4) emissions. However, the underlying microbial mechanisms are unclear. In this study, a paddy soil slurry was incubated anaerobically for 14d with biochar amendments produced from rice straw at 300, 500, or 700°C (B300, B500, and B700) to study their influences on greenhouse gas emissions. Illumina sequencing was used to characterize shift of soil bacterial and archaeal community composition. After peaking at day 1, N2O emission then sharply decreased to low levels while CH4 started to emit at day 3 then continually increased with incubation. Compared to control soil (57.9mgkg-1 soil), B300, B500, and B700 amendments decreased N2O peak emission to 17.9, 1.28, and 0.59mgkg-1, mainly due to increased soil pH. In contrast, the amendments enhanced CH4 production from 58.2 to 93.4, 62.6, and 63.4mgkg-1 at day 14 due to increased soil dissolved organic carbon. Abundance of denitrifying bacteria (e.g., Bacilli, 7.07-13.6 vs. 16.9%) was reduced with biochar amendments, especially with B500 and B700, contributing to the decreased N2O emissions. However, larger pore size of B500 and B700 (surface area of 68.1 and 161m2g-1) than B300 (4.40m2g-1) favored electron transfer between bacteria and iron minerals, leading to increased abundance of iron-reducing bacteria, (e.g., Clostridia, 48.2-50.6 vs. 33.3%), which competed with methanogens to produce CH4, thereby leading to lower increase in CH4 emission. Biochar amendments with high pH and surface area might be effective to mitigate emission of both N2O and CH4 from paddy soil.

Abstract:The form of soil nitrogen input significantly affects soil CO2 emission. As a new form of nitrogen input, biochar-loaded ammonia nitrogen not only reduces the input of chemical nitrogen fertilizer in farmland but also reduces the cost of environmental treatment. It is of great significance to promote the zero growth of national chemical fertilizer, the prevention and control of farmland non-point source pollution, and the realization of the national goal of "carbon peak" and "carbon neutralization." Through an indoor culture experiment, the effects of different nitrogen input forms on soil carbon emission, enzyme activity, and microbial community were studied through four treatments:no fertilization (CK), single application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer (CF), biochar combined application of chemical nitrogen fertilizer (BF), and biochar-loaded ammonia nitrogen (BN). The results showed that compared with that in CF, BF significantly increased cumulative carbon emissions (66.24 %), whereas BN had no significant difference. It is worth noting that the cumulative carbon emissions were significantly reduced by 35.28 % compared with that in BF and BN. Compared with those in CF and BF, the activities of β-glucosidase, peroxidase, and polyphenol oxidase treated with BN significantly increased by 20.25 % and 5.20 %, respectively. Compared with that in CF, the BF treatment increased microbial community richness and community diversity, whereas the BN treatment decreased microbial community richness. Compared with that in BF, the relative abundance of Proteobacteria decreased by 11.16 %, and the relative abundance of Actinobacteria and Bacteroidota increased by 8.12 % and 5.83 %, respectively, in which xylosidase activity was the most important soil factor affecting microbial community structure. The relative abundance of Chloroflexi was significantly correlated with cellobiose hydrolase activity, and the relative abundance of Gemmatimonadetes was significantly correlated with β-glucosidase activity. There was a very significant correlation between the relative abundance of Proteobacteria and cumulative carbon emissions. To summarize, compared with those under biochar combined with chemical nitrogen fertilizer, biochar loaded with ammonia nitrogen significantly reduced cumulative carbon emissions, and its emission reduction effect was better. The results of this study will be beneficial to the landing of the national "double carbon strategy," the healthy development of the biological natural gas industry, the construction of the national green cultivation circular agriculture system, and the realization of the national zero growth strategy of chemical fertilizer.

Abstract:Both biochar and nitrogen (N) addition have been proposed for enhancing plant productivity and increasing carbon (C) sequestration. Although numerous studies have been conducted to examine responses of soil greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes to biochar or N addition, biochar is often co-applied with N fertilizer and the interactive effects of the two factors still remain unclear. In this study, we performed a meta-analysis of manipulative experiments with 267 two-factor observations to quantify the main and interactive effects of biochar and N addition on soil GHG fluxes at a global scale. Our results showed that biochar addition significantly increased soil CO2 emission by 10.1%, but decreased N2O emission by 14.7%. Meanwhile, N addition increased both soil CO2 and N2O emissions by 11.6% and 288%, respectively. The combination of biochar and N addition also exhibited significant positive effect on CO2 (+18.0%) and N2O (+148%) emissions, but there were non-significant changes in CH4 fluxes. Consequently, antagonistic interaction between biochar and N addition were observed in soil GHG fluxes and their global warming potential (GWP), except for CH4 uptake showing an additive interaction. This synthesis highlights the importance of the interactive effects between biochar and N addition, providing a quantitative basis to develop sustainable strategies toward widespread application of biochar to preserve cropping system and mitigate climate change.
Biochar Mitigated Yield-Scaled N2O and NO Emissions and Ensured Vegetable Quality and Soil Fertility: A 3-Year Greenhouse Field Observation

Abstract:Biochar amendments have been widely used in agricultural soil for lowering N2O and NO emissions while improving soil fertility and crop performance. However, a thorough understanding of the longevity of the favorable effects would be a prerequisite for large-scale biochar application in agriculture. We conducted a three-year greenhouse vegetable trial in Southeast China to systematically investigate the impacts of biochar mixed with nitrogen (N) on soil N2O and NO emissions, vegetable performance, and soil fertility at an interannual scale. The field experiment was established in November 2016 with biochar (0, 20 and 40 t ha−1; C0, C1, and C2, respectively), applied once without/with 240 kg N ha−1 urea (N0 or N1, respectively). Soil N2O and NO emissions were monitored during the spring vegetable cultivation period, and vegetable yield, quality, and soil properties were measured after harvests in 2018, 2019, and 2020. Results indicated that N application significantly increased N2O and NO emissions and vegetable yield throughout the trial period. Biochar combined with N generally reduced N2O and NO emissions and emission factors while increasing the vegetable yield, leading to lower yield-scaled N2O and NO emissions in 2018 and 2019. Biochar markedly enhanced soil pH and organic carbon and persisted, but generally had no significant effect on N use efficiency (NUE), vegetable quality, and soil fertility index (SFI) among treatments in over-fertilized vegetable fields. Based on our results, biochar application at 20 t ha−1 combined with N seemed to achieve the highest agronomic and environmental benefits for intensive vegetable production in Southeast China.
