Abstract:Soil amended with single biochar or nitrogen (N) fertilizer has frequently been reported to alter soil nitrification process due to its impact on soil properties. However, little is known about the dynamic response of nitrification and ammonia-oxidizers to the combined application of biochar and N fertilizer in intensive vegetable soil. In this study, an incubation experiment was designed to evaluate the effects of biochar and N fertilizer application on soil nitrification, abundance and community shifts of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and ammonia oxidizing archaea (AOA) in Hangzhou greenhouse vegetable soil. Results showed that single application of biochar had no significant effect on soil net nitrification rates and ammonia-oxidizers. Conversely, the application of only N fertilizer and N fertilizer + biochar significantly increased net nitrification rate and the abundance of AOB rather than AOA, and only AOB abundance was significantly correlated with soil net nitrification rate. Moreover, the combined application of N fertilizer and biochar had greater effect on AOB communities than that of the only N fertilizers, and the relative abundance of 156 bp T-RF ( Nitrosospira cluster 3c) decreased but 60 bp T-RF ( Nitrosospira cluster 3a and cluster 0) increased to become a single predominant group. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that all the AOB sequences were grouped into Nitrosospira cluster, and most of AOA sequences were clustered within group 1.1b. We concluded that soil nitrification was stimulated by the combined application of N fertilizer and biochar via enhancing the abundance and shifting the community composition of AOB rather than AOA in intensive vegetable soil.

Abstract:Biochar amendments have frequently been reported to alter microbial communities and biogeochemical processes in soils. However, the impact of biochar application on bacterial (AOB) and archaeal ammonia oxidizers (AOA) remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated the responses of AOB and AOA to the application of biochar derived from cotton stalk at rates of 5, 10, and 20 % by weight to a coastal alkaline soil during a 12-week incubation. The results showed that the amoA gene of AOB consistently outnumbered that of AOA, whereas only the AOA amoA gene copy number was significantly correlated with the potential ammonia oxidation (PAO) rate (P < 0.01). The significant decrease of PAO rates in biochar treatments occurred after incubation for 4–6 weeks, which were distinctly longer than that in the control (2 weeks). The PAO rates were significantly different among treatments during the first 4 weeks of incubation (P < 0.05), with the highest usually in the 10 % treatment. Biochar application significantly increased the abundance of both nitrifiers in the 4 weeks of incubation (P < 0.05). Biochar amendment also decreased AOA diversity, but increased AOB diversity, which resulted in different community structures of both nitrifiers (P < 0.01), as shown by the differences between the 5 % biochar and the control treatments. We conclude that biochar application generally enhanced the abundance and altered the composition of ammonia oxidizers; the rate of biochar application also affected the rate and dynamics of nitrification, and the risk for increasing the alkalinity and N leaching of the studied soil was lower with a lower application rate.

Abstract:Background and aimsModern agriculture is driving the release of excessive amounts of reactive nitrogen (N) from the soils to the environment, thereby threatening ecological balances and functions. The amendment of soils with biochar has been suggested as a promising solution to regulate the soil N cycle and reduce N effluxes. However, a comprehensive and quantitative understanding of biochar impacts on soil N cycle remains elusive.MethodsA meta-analysis was conducted to assess the influence of biochar on different variables involved in soil N cycle using data compiled across 208 peer-reviewed studies.ResultsOn average, biochar beneficially increases symbiotic biological N2 fixation (63%), improves plant N uptake (11%), reduces soil N2O emissions (32%), and decreases soil N leaching (26%), but it poses a risk of increased soil NH3 volatilization (19%). Biochar-induced increase in soil NH3 volatilization commonly occurs in studies with soils of low buffering capacity (soil pH ≤ 5, organic carbon≤10 g kg−1, or clay texture), the application of high alkaline biochar (straw- or manure-derived biochar), or biochar at high application rate (>40 t ha−1). Besides, if the pyrolytic syngas is not purified, the biochar production process may be a potential source of N2O and NOx emissions which correspond to 2–4% and 3–24% of the feedstock-N, respectively.ConclusionsThis study suggests that to make biochar beneficial for decreasing soil N effluxes, clean advanced pyrolysis technique and adapted use of biochar are of great importance.

Effects of biochar on nitrification and denitrification-mediated N2O emissions and the associated microbial community in an agricultural soil

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is a strong greenhouse gas, and it is of great significance for N2O reduction to study the effects of biochar on its production pathway. In this research, the contributions and mechanisms of biochar on autotrophic nitrification (ANF), heterotrophic nitrification (HNF), and denitrification (DF) to N2O emissions were studied by using 15N stable isotopes and high-throughput sequencing after laboratory incubation. The results showed that biochar addition at 2% (B2) significantly reduced the N2O emissions from the ANF by an average of 20.6%, while adding 5% biochar (B5) had no significant effect on the ANF. Both B2 and B5 significantly reduced the N2O emissions from the HNF by 15.7% and 13.2%, respectively, and reduced the N2O emissions from the DF by 40.9% and 11.7%, respectively. B2 enhanced the relative contribution rate of the ANF to N2O emissions by 6.3%, while B5 had little effect on it. Biochar addition significantly changed the copy numbers of the AOA and AOB, as well as the nirK, nirS, and nosZ genes, but it had no significant effect on the community composition of the AOA and had minimal effect on the AOB community. B2 significantly increased the abundance of the genus Rhodococcus of nirK type denitrifiers and had a significant effect on the relative abundance of Cupriavidus and Pseudomonas of the nosZ type denitrifiers. These results revealed that the inhibitory effects of biochar on N2O emissions from nitrification might be attributed to the direct immobilization and adsorption of inorganic N by biochar and to its promotion of the genus Rhodococcus of nirK-type denitrifiers and the genera Cupriavidus and Pseudomonas of the nosZ-type denitrifiers. The soil exchangeable NH4+-N and NO3−-N concentrations were the primary factors affecting the N2O emission rates. These results help to elucidate the effects and mechanisms of biochar on N2O production pathways in agricultural soil.

Linking Key Properties of Biochar to Nitrous Oxide Emission in Soil: Chemical and Molecular Mechanisms

Abstract:Biochar is a product of biomass pyrolysis, by which bioenergy is produced. It has been suggested that biochar can be used as a soil amendment agent to improve soil physical (e.g. particle size distribution, bulk density and water retention), chemical (e.g. pH and cation exchange capacity) and biological (e.g. microbial community and enzyme activities) properties. Biochar can also increase soil carbon (C) inventory as a means of carbon storage and nitrogen (N) retention, improve plant growth, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Meanwhile, nitrous oxide (N2O) is a potent greenhouse gas with ca. 310 times that of carbon dioxide (CO2) and also a serious ozone depleting compound, contributing greatly to the global warming. To meet the challenges associated with climate change, greenhouse gas (particularly, N2O) emissions have to be reduced. Hence, studies on how biochar incorporation into soil affects N2O emission are of great significance. An increasing number of studies have shown that biochar amendment decreased the soil N2O emissions, while some other studies indicated no change or an increase in the N2O emission in biochar-amended soils. Various physical, chemical and molecular mechanisms have been proposed to describe the processes responsible for soil N2O emission, such as reduced N availability, decreased abundance of some denitrifying genes, accelerated the electron transfer to facilitate the last step of denitrification (N2O to N2), and increased adsorption of N2O. However, little direct evidence has been presented to support these mechanisms as biochar effect varies with soil type, biochar type (feedstock, pyrolysis temperature), plant species as well as environmental conditions.

Abstract:Application of inorganic nitrogen (N) fertilizers in agriculture can increase emissions of nitrous oxide, a potent greenhouse gas, leaching of nitrate (NO3-), a groundwater contaminant hazardous to human health, and soil acidification. Soil amendment with biochar potentially mitigates these losses and undesirable outcomes. However, there have been considerable inconsistencies in reported impacts, likely owing to variable physiochemical characteristics of the biochar materials and/or the soil environment. This study methodically evaluated the impact of biochar soil incorporation on N transformation and underlying microbial processes using soils with varying biochar types, soil texture, soil moisture, and manure compost co- amendments. Laboratory incubations were conducted to monitor the fate of urea fertilizer N spiked in biochar amended and unamended soils by assaying soil ammonium (NH4+), nitrite (NO2-), and NO3- concentrations, pH, and abundances of soil nitrifiers; ammonia oxidizing bacteria and archaea (AOB and AOA) and Nitrospira with the capacity to perform complete ammonia oxidation (comammox). Soil moisture was a critical factor affecting N transformation processes, more so than biochar, but biochar did result in significantly different concentrations of N species in response to urea application. Biochar enhanced nitrification, more significantly in drier conditions and in sandy soil. Biochar offered some buffering potential in the neutral-alkaline, unsaturated soils, preventing >1 unit drop in pH compared to unamended soils. Co-application of biochar with manure composts enhanced nitrification slightly, which was evidenced by higher abundances of some soil nitrifiers at 4 weeks, although increases in nitrification rates were not statistically significant. Soil nitrifier populations tended to increase in response to a pinewood biochar, but trends differed for saturated soil, in soils of differing textures, or when different biochar materials were evaluated. Thus, when evaluating implications of biochar on the fate of mineral N fertilizer, soil moisture and other environment conditions should be considered.
Linking N2O emissions from biochar-amended soil to the structure and function of the N-cycling microbial community

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) contributes 8% to global greenhouse gas emissions. Agricultural sources represent about 60% of anthropogenic N2O emissions. Most agricultural N2O emissions are due to increased fertilizer application. A considerable fraction of nitrogen fertilizers are converted to N2O by microbiological processes (that is, nitrification and denitrification). Soil amended with biochar (charcoal created by pyrolysis of biomass) has been demonstrated to increase crop yield, improve soil quality and affect greenhouse gas emissions, for example, reduce N2O emissions. Despite several studies on variations in the general microbial community structure due to soil biochar amendment, hitherto the specific role of the nitrogen cycling microbial community in mitigating soil N2O emissions has not been subject of systematic investigation. We performed a microcosm study with a water-saturated soil amended with different amounts (0%, 2% and 10% (w/w)) of high-temperature biochar. By quantifying the abundance and activity of functional marker genes of microbial nitrogen fixation (nifH), nitrification (amoA) and denitrification (nirK, nirS and nosZ) using quantitative PCR we found that biochar addition enhanced microbial nitrous oxide reduction and increased the abundance of microorganisms capable of N2-fixation. Soil biochar amendment increased the relative gene and transcript copy numbers of the nosZ-encoded bacterial N2O reductase, suggesting a mechanistic link to the observed reduction in N2O emissions. Our findings contribute to a better understanding of the impact of biochar on the nitrogen cycling microbial community and the consequences of soil biochar amendment for microbial nitrogen transformation processes and N2O emissions from soil.
Stoichiometric ratio of dissolved organic carbon to nitrate regulates nitrous oxide emission from the biochar-amended soils

Abstract:Biochar has the potential to mitigate nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions from soils. However, the mechanisms responsible for N2O emission in biochar-amended soils are yet to be elucidated. In this study, an incubation experiment was carried out to investigate the effects of seven biochars (eucalyptus, softwood mixture, mallee, jarrah, peanut shell, green waste and radiata pine) on the stoichiometric shifts of dissolved organic carbon (DOC), nitrate (NO3--N) and N2O emission in two contrasting soils (Ferrosol with 5.3% total C, 0.46% total N; Tenosol with 0.4% total C, 0.01% total N). All biochar treatments were found to significantly reduce N2O emission in Tenosol by 61-72%. However, in Ferrosol, biochars' impacts on N2O emission were variable, with only peanut shell, green waste and radiata pine bicohars significantly reducing N2O emission by 17-23%. A decrease in NO3- availability in most biochar-amended treatments also was observed in both soils compared with the control. The N2O fluxes in Ferrosol were mainly regulated by the shifts in the availability and stoichiometry of DOC and NO3- induced by the biochar amendments. The DOC derived from biochars increased DOC:NO3- ratio in Ferrosol at the beginning of the experiment, but these effects disappeared 7days after incubation. Overall, the N2O fluxes were C-limited due to the presence of high concentrations of NO3- in Ferrosol. However, in Tenosol, the relationship between stoichiometry of DOC:NO3- and N2O fluxes was much weaker than Ferrosol and N2O fluxes mainly limited by the concentration of NO3-. This study demonstrated that the mechanisms responsible for biochar effects on soil N2O fluxes are considered to be soil and biochar specific.
Effects of biochar application on soil nitrogen transformation, microbial functional genes, enzyme activity, and plant nitrogen uptake: A meta‐analysis of field studies

Abstract:Biochar application can influence soil nitrogen (N) cycle through biological and abiotic processes. However, studies on comprehensive examination of the effects of biochar application on microbially mediated N-cycling processes (N mineralization, nitrification, denitrification, and fixation) and soil N fate (i.e., plant N uptake, soil N2O emission, and N leaching) are warranted. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the effects of biochar application on soil N transformation, microbial functional gene abundance, enzyme activity, and plant N uptake. To achieve the objective of this study, a meta-analysis involving 131 peer-reviewed field experiments was conducted. Results showed that field application of biochar significantly enhanced soil NH4+ and NO3− content, N mineralization, nitrification, N2 fixation, and plant N uptake by 5.3%, 3.7%, 15.3%, 48.5%, 14.7%, and 18.3%, respectively, but reduced N2O emissions and N leaching by 14.9% and 10.9%, respectively. Biochar application also increased the abundance of soil denitrifying/nitrifying genes (amoA, narG, nirS/nirK+S, and nosZ), proportion of N2 fixation bacteria, and N-acetyl-glucosaminidase activity by 18.6%–87.6%. Soil NO3− content was positively correlated with AOA-amoA abundance, and soil N2O emission was positively correlated with the relative abundance of genes (e.g., amoA, narG, and nirS/nirK) involved in N2O production. Furthermore, long-term biochar application tended to increase AOB-amoA and nirK+S abundance, especially soil N2O emission and N leaching. Overall, the findings of this study indicated that biochar application accelerated microbially mediated N-cycling processes under field conditions, thereby enhancing soil N availability and plant productivity. However, long-term biochar application may increase N losses. Therefore, future studies should be conducted to examine the effect of long-term biochar application on the soil N cycle and the underlying microbial mechanisms.
The effect of long-term biochar amendment on N2O emissions: Experiments with N15-O18 isotopes combined with specific inhibition approaches

Abstract:Numerous studies reporting a transient decrease in soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions after biochar amendment have mainly used short-term experiments. Thus, long-term field trials are needed to clarify the actual impact of biochar on N2O emissions and the underlying mechanisms. To address this, both a 15N18O labeling technique and gene analyses were applied to investigate how N2O production pathways and microbial mediation were affected by long term biochar amendment in field. Then, 1-octyne and 2-phenyl l-4,4,5,5-tetramethylimidazoline-1-oxyl 3-oxide (PTIO) were used in combination with potassium chlorate to evaluate the relative contribution of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) to potential ammonia oxidation (PAO) and the associated N2O production. Acidic and alkaline greenhouse vegetable soils that had each received two separate treatments were collected (control, no biochar amendment; biochar, biochar amended in the field after 2 or 7 years). The results showed that biochar decreased N2O emissions by 48% in acidic soils and by 22% in alkaline soils compared to those in control. These results were explained by decreases in nitrifier denitrification- (by 74%) and heterotrophic denitrification-derived N2O production (by 58%), as further evidenced by a decrease in NO2- (by 87%) and the (nirK+nirS+fungal nirK):(nosZ-I + nosZ-II) ratio (by 5%) in both greenhouse vegetable soils. However, biochar increased nitrifier nitrification-derived N2O in both soils because of increases in pH and PAO, which were attributed to an increased abundance of AOB rather than AOA. The contribution of AOB to PAO (or N2O) exceeded 69% (or 68%) of the total in acidic soil and 88% (or 85%) of the total in alkaline soil after biochar amendment. Our findings demonstrated that the mitigation of N2O by biochar is linked to specific N2O production pathways.

Abstract:In spite of the numerous studies reporting a decrease in soil nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions after biochar amendment, there is still a lack of understanding of the processes involved. Hence the subject remains controversial, with a number of studies showing no changes or even an increase in N2O emissions after biochar soil application. Unraveling the exact causes of these changes, and in which circumstances biochar decreases or increases emissions, is vital to developing and applying successful mitigation strategies. With this objective, we studied two soils [Haplic Phaeozem (HP) and Haplic Calcisol (HC)], which showed opposed responses to biochar amendment. Under the same experimental conditions, the addition of biochar to soil HP decreased N2O emissions by 76%; whereas it increased emissions by 54% in soil HC. We combined microcosm experiments adding different nitrogen fertilizers, stable isotope techniques and the use of a nitrification inhibitor (dicyciandiamide) with the aim of improving our understanding of the mechanisms involved in the formation of N2O in these two soils. Evidence suggests that denitrification is the main pathway leading to N2O emissions in soil HP, and ammonia oxidation and nitrifier-denitrification being the major processes generating N2O in soil HC. Biochar systematically stimulated nitrification in soil HC, which was probably the cause of the increased N2O emissions. Here we demonstrate that the effectiveness of using biochar for reducing N2O emissions from a particular soil is linked to its dominant N2O formation pathway.

Abstract:"Nature based solutions" has been proposed at COP25 as an important venture for combating anthropogenic climate change, and soil biochar amendment have been proposed to have vast carbon sequestration potential. On the other hand, biochar carbon storage in soils is confronted with both biochar and soil carbon and nitrogen loss. The superposition of these two influences leads to complex variation in net greenhouse gas emissions from biochar-amended-soils. Nitrogen fertilization is a common agriculture practice in China and worldwide. To study the effects and mechanisms of biochar on soil net greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N2O) under different nitrogen fertilization gradient in a ferrallitic soil, a soil column experiment was conducted. Maize straw derived biochar (pyrolysed at 500 degrees C) and nitrogen fertilizer (ammonium sulfate) were investigated at varying application rates. It was found that biochar amendment increased CO2 emissions by 51.1%-57.1% and N2O emissions by 50.0%-73.7%, respectively, when soil was incubated with 50 mg N/kg nitrogen fertilization. The N2O emission in soil was dominated by nitrification, and the labile fraction of biochar played the dominant role in increasing soil CO2 and N2O emissions. Therefore, water or acidwashing of biochar before its application would significantly reduce the net GHG emissions. When the nitrogen fertilization was applied at the unusually high level of 450 mg N/kg, the N2O emissions mainly came from denitrification. Biochar amendment introduced less soil CO2 emission increment, and suppressed N2O emissions by inhibition of denitrification via adsorption protection mechanism(towards nitrogen) and aeration effect. A chain mechanismhas been illustrated and results fromthis study suggest that biochar is best applied to an environment or the circumstance that maximizes adsorption protection mechanism and aeration effect to achieve total greenhouse gas emission reduction. This study therefore provides basis for the scientific sound application and regulation of biochar amendment in soils. (C) 2020 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N 2 O) emissions from soils are a significant environmental concern due to their contribution to greenhouse gas emissions. Biochar has been considered as a promising soil amendment for its potential to influence soil processes. Iron modification of biochar has been extensively discussed for its ability to enhance adsorption of pollutants, yet its impact on mitigating soil N 2 O emissions remains poorly understood. In the present study, corn straw (CB) and wood (WB) biochars were treated with FeSO 4 /FeCl 3 (SCB and SWB) and Fe(NO 3 ) 3 (NCB and NWB). The effects of these biochars on soil N 2 O emissions were investigated using soils with varying fertility levels over a 35-day incubation period at 20 °C. Results revealed significant variations in biochar surface chemistry depending on biochar feedstock and iron salts. Compared to pristine biochars, NWB and NCB exhibited higher pH, total N content, and dissolved NO 3 –N concentrations (246 ± 17 and 298 ± 35 mg kg −1 , respectively), but lower bulk and surface C content. In contrast, SWB and SCB demonstrated acidic pH and elevated dissolved NH 4 –N concentrations (5.38 ± 0.43 and 4.19 ± 0.22 mg kg −1 , respectively). In forest soils, NWB and NCB increased cumulative N 2 O emission by 28.5% and 67.0%, respectively, likely due to the introduction of mineral nitrogen evidenced by significant positive correlation with NO 3 –N or NH 4 –N. Conversely, SWB and SCB reduced emissions in the same soil by 28.5% and 6.9%, respectively. In agricultural soil, most biochars, except SWB, enhanced N 2 O emissions, possibly through the release of labile organic carbon facilitating denitrification. These findings underscore the significance of changes in biochar surface chemistry and the associated potential risk in triggering soil N 2 O emissions. This study highlights the need for a balanced design of biochar that considers both engineering benefits and climate change mitigation.

Abstract:Biochar amendment has been proposed as a potential solution for improving soil quality and suppressing greenhouse gas emission. Considering the serious nitrogen fertilizer overuse problem in China, it is important to investigate the effect of biochar on soil with excess nitrogen fertilizer. Therefore, two sets of soil column experiments were conducted to explore the effect of biochar on N2O emission from nitrogen fertilizer-overused soil. Three types of biochar (biochars pyrolzed at 300, 500 and 700°C, respectively) and one type of nitrogen fertilizer (ammonium sulfate) were investigated at varying application rates. It was found that N2O emission was related to both biochar and N-fertilizer application rates, and increased N2O emission was negatively correlated with the TC/IN ratio (the ratio of total carbon to inorganic nitrogen) after biochar application. The soil TC/IN ratio determined the ammonium utilization pathway, affecting the intensity of nitrification and N2O emission. When the TC/IN ratio was relatively high (>60), suppressed nitrification led to the suppression of N2O emission. Conversely, enhanced nitrification when the TC/IN ratio was relatively low (<45) caused the promotion of N2O emission. In conclusion, biochar's suppression of soil N2O emission was conditional and biochar should be applied in a proper ratio to nitrogen fertilizer to avoid excessive N2O emission.
How much is soil nitrous oxide emission reduced with biochar application? An evaluation of meta‐analyses

Abstract:Nitrous oxide (N2O) is the third important long‐lived greenhouse gas next to carbon dioxide and methane and croplands are considered biogeochemical hotspots of soil N2O emissions. To reduce soil N2O and other greenhouse emissions, climate‐smart agricultural practices including biochar application have been applied. Many studies have been conducted with biochar application but results from these studies are not conclusive. To address this issue, meta‐analysis, a quantitative review that synthesizes results from multiple independent studies, has been widely used. The results from different meta‐analyses also differ but are seldomly evaluated. In this study, we evaluated meta‐analyses on the effects of biochar application on soil N2O emissions. A grand mean response ratio was further proposed to estimate an overall effect and the impacts of experiment setting, properties of biochar and soil, and agricultural practices. We found 18 meta‐analysis papers were published between 2014 and 2022. Sample size (publications or experiments) varied from less than 30 to more than 1000, with a mean sample size of 275. Response ratio was calculated in all studies except one. While four meta‐analyses did not find a significant effect of biochar application on soil N2O emissions, all others reported reductions of soil N2O emissions, but the magnitude ranged from ‐10.5% to ‐54.8%. Synthesizing all results from these meta‐analyses, we found that biochar application overall significantly reduced the soil N2O emissions by 38.8%. The impacts increased with experimental duration till one and half years and reduced after that. Biochar application rate and C:N ratio had large influence on the effects of biochar application on soil N2O emissions. This study demonstrated that while meta‐analysis provides a more comprehensive and better estimation, the inconsistence among these studies may need to be further evaluated. A grand mean response ratio based on meta‐analyses could be more accurate and representative than single meta‐analysis.

Abstract:"Nature based solutions" has been proposed at COP25 as an important venture for combating anthropogenic climate change, and soil biochar amendment have been proposed to have vast carbon sequestration potential. On the other hand, biochar carbon storage in soils is confronted with both biochar and soil carbon and nitrogen loss. The superposition of these two influences leads to complex variation in net greenhouse gas emissions from biochar-amended-soils. Nitrogen fertilization is a common agriculture practice in China and worldwide. To study the effects and mechanisms of biochar on soil net greenhouse gas emissions (CO2, N2O) under different nitrogen fertilization gradient in a ferrallitic soil, a soil column experiment was conducted. Maize straw derived biochar (pyrolysed at 500 °C) and nitrogen fertilizer (ammonium sulfate) were investigated at varying application rates. It was found that biochar amendment increased CO2 emissions by 51.1%-57.1% and N2O emissions by 50.0%-73.7%, respectively, when soil was incubated with 50 mg N/kg nitrogen fertilization. The N2O emission in soil was dominated by nitrification, and the labile fraction of biochar played the dominant role in increasing soil CO2 and N2O emissions. Therefore, water or acid washing of biochar before its application would significantly reduce the net GHG emissions. When the nitrogen fertilization was applied at the unusually high level of 450 mg N/kg, the N2O emissions mainly came from denitrification. Biochar amendment introduced less soil CO2 emission increment, and suppressed N2O emissions by inhibition of denitrification via adsorption protection mechanism (towards nitrogen) and aeration effect. A chain mechanism has been illustrated and results from this study suggest that biochar is best applied to an environment or the circumstance that maximizes adsorption protection mechanism and aeration effect to achieve total greenhouse gas emission reduction. This study therefore provides basis for the scientific sound application and regulation of biochar amendment in soils.

Abstract:Global warming is one of the eco-environmental problems of most concern to scientists. N 2 O, an atmospheric greenhouse gas, has been widely studied because of its high warming potential. As an excellent soil conditioner, biochar has a very broad research value and application path in the farmland. This work examined the impact of biochar application on N 2 O emissions reduction potential of farmland soils in northern China by meta analysis and path analysis. The results were as follows: the N 2 O emissions reduction potential changes corresponded with different biochar preparation materials, preparation temperature, C/N ratio and pH. Biochar is more suitable for application in soil with a bulk density < 1.3 g cm −3 , sandy loam texture, neutral pH, organic matter content 20–30 g kg −1 , soil C/N ratio 10–20, and total nitrogen < 2 g kg −1 . At the same time, the maximum reduction of N 2 O emissions can be achieved in a scenario where the biochar is applied at 20 t ha −1 - 40 t ha −1 and the application of nitrogen fertilizer is 100–200 kg N ha −1 . Under the above ideal conditions, this study selected the data of soil mineralized nitrogen (X 1 ), soil organic matter content (X 2 ), soil water content (X 3 ), average temperature (X 4 ), total nitrogen (X 5 ), and N 2 O emissions (Y) for correlation analysis and path analysis, and finally obtained the multiple stepwise regression equation between N 2 O emissions and various impact factors as follows: Y = -45.9102 + 0.6874X 1 + 0.4634X 2 + 0.3249X 3 + 0.2698X 4 + 0.2218X 5 ( R 2 = 0.826, p < 0.01, n = 87). The direct relationships between N 2 O and soil mineralized nitrogen and soil organic matter content were very significant ( P < 0.01). The second is soil water content, average temperature and total nitrogen. Indirect relationships between N 2 O and average temperature, total nitrogen and mineralized nitrogen were significant ( P < 0.05).

The electrochemical mechanism of biochar for mediating the product ratio of N2O/(N2O + N2) in the denitrification process

Abstract:The biochar electrochemical properties and surface functional groups significantly impact N2O production and reduction during denitrification process. However, its effects on N2O emissions during the denitrification process and its electrochemical mechanisms remain unclear. The study examined the impact of pristine and oxidized biochar combined with two types of nitrogen fertilizers on the N2O/(N2O + N2) ratio and N2O emissions in an incubation experiment with seven treatments: (1) CK (no application of chemical fertilizer); (2) N1 (applying (NH4)2SO4); (3) N1B ((NH4)2SO4 + pristine biochar); (4) N1BO ((NH4)2SO4 + oxidized biochar); (5) N2 (applying KNO3); (6) N2B (KNO3 + pristine biochar); (7) N2BO (KNO3 + oxidized biochar). The study found that in comparison with applying nitrogen fertilizer alone, combining pristine biochar decreased soil N2O concentration by 7.1 %-85.8 %, while combining oxidized biochar increased it by 15.7 %-125.6 %. Applying pristine biochar reduced N2O/(N2O + N2) ratio by 10.4 %-86.2 %, whereas applying oxidized biochar increased it by 12.9 %-121.6 %. The application of pristine biochar increased the nosZ gene abundance and decreased the (nirS + nirK)/nosZ ratio, which contributed to reducing N2O to N2. Compared with oxidized biochar, the oxygen-containing functional groups of pristine biochar decreased by 46.6 %, and it possessed a higher specific surface area (23.01 m2 g-1) and electrical conductivity (0.003 mS cm-1). The correlation analysis showed that DOC and inorganic nitrogen were the key environmental factors affecting N2O emissions. Additionally, the electrical conductivity, specific capacitance, and oxygen-containing functional groups of the biochar were identified as the main factors driving N2O emissions. The SEM analysis suggested that the indirect influence of biochar electrochemical properties on N2O emissions was greater than its direct influence. Our work provides fresh perspectives on reducing soil N2O emissions and establishes a theoretical foundation for the subsequent preparation of biochar materials with enhanced N2O reduction capabilities.
Biochar amendments and climate warming affected nitrification associated N2O and NO production in a vegetable field

Abstract:Soil nitrification driven by ammonia-oxidizing microorganisms is the most important source of nitrous oxide (N2O) and nitric oxide (NO). Biochar amendment has been proposed as the most promising measure for combating climate warming; both have the potential to regulate the soil nitrification process. However, the comprehensive impacts of different aged biochars and warming combinations on soil nitrification-related N2O and NO production are not well understood. Here, 1-octyne and acetylene were used to investigate the relative contributions of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB) and archaea (AOA) to potential nitrification-mediated N2O and NO production from the fertilized vegetable soil with different aged biochar amendments and soil temperatures in microcosm incubations. Results demonstrated that AOB dominated nitrification-related N2O and NO production across biochar additions and climate warming. Biochar amendment did not significantly influence the relative contribution of AOB and AOA to N2O and NO production. Field-aged biochar markedly reduced N2O and NO production via inhibiting AOB-amoA gene abundance and AOB-dependent N2O yield while fresh- and lab-aged biochar produced negligible effects on AOB-dependent N2O yield. Climate warming significantly increased N2O production and AOB-dependent N2O yield but less so on NO production. Notably, the relative contribution of AOB to N2O production was enhanced by climate warming, whereas AOB-derived NO showed the opposite tendency. Overall, the results revealed that field-aged biochar contributed to mitigating warming-induced increases in N2O and NO production via inhibiting AOB-amoA gene abundance and AOB-dependent N2O yield. Our findings provided guidance for mitigating nitrogen oxide emissions in intensively managed vegetable production under the context of biochar amendments and climate warming.
