Abstract:Soil aggregates with spatially heterogeneous microenvironments influence microbial communities and mineral protection in agricultural soils and play a pivotal role in soil organic carbon (OC) turnover. However, the mechanisms through which conservation practices affect microbial properties and mineral protection to regulate soil OC accumulation at the aggregate scale has not been determined in the black soil region of Northeast China. Here, we investigated the potential mechanisms of soil OC accumulation in two sets of conservation (Cons) and conventional (Conv) soil samples: (1) Cons (no-tillage with straw mulching) and Conv (rotary tillage with straw removal) in a Phaeozem (Lishu County) and (2) Cons (rotary tillage with straw incorporation) and Conv (rotary tillage with straw removal) in a Chernozem (Da'an County). The soil aggregates were classified into three fractions: macroaggregates (0.25-2 mm), microaggregates (0.053-0.25 mm), and silt and clay (< 0.053 mm). Cons significantly increased soil OC by increasing macroaggregate-associated OC. Cons significantly increased the concentrations of free iron oxides (Fe-d), iron-bound OC and calcium-bound OC in macro- and microaggregates (except in calcium-bound OC within microaggregates in Lishu) and increased exchangeable calcium (Ca-exe) in Da'an. Additionally, Cons significantly increased the relative abundance of Gemmatimonadota in functionally and topologically important (FTI) taxa within macroaggregates. In Da'an, the relative abundance of Ascomycota in FTI taxa within the macroaggregates and microaggregates was significantly greater in Cons. Cons significantly reduced microbial network complexity (except in microaggregates in Lishu). Structural equation modeling indicated that conservation practices regulated stable OC pools accumulation through mineral protection (mainly Ca-exe and Fe-d) and network complexity to increase macroaggregate-associated OC. Our findings emphasize the joint role of soil minerals and microbes in increasing soil OC through the modulation of macroaggregate-associated OC accumulation, which has important implications for enhancing soil quality and improving agricultural sustainability.
Agricultural Diversification Promotes Sustainable and Resilient Global Rice Production

Abstract:Rice is a staple food for half of the human population, but the effects of diversification on yields, economy, biodiversity and ecosystem services have not been synthesized. Here we quantify diversification effects on environmental and socio-economic aspects of global rice production. We performed a second-order meta-analysis based on 25 first-order meta-analyses covering four decades of research, showing that diversification can maintain soil fertility, nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration and yield. We used three individual first-order meta-analyses based on 39 articles to close major research gaps on the effects of diversification on economy, biodiversity and pest control, showing that agricultural diversification can increase biodiversity by 40%, improve economy by 26% and reduce crop damage by 31%. Trade-off analysis showed that agricultural diversification in rice production promotes win–win scenarios between yield and other ecosystem services in 81% of all cases. Knowledge gaps remain in understanding the spatial and temporal effects of specific diversification practices and trade-offs.
Temporal and spatial effects of crop diversity on soil carbon and nitrogen storage and vertical distribution

Abstract:Species-diverse plant communities can promote the accumulation of soil organic carbon (SOC) and nitrogen (SON) in both natural and semi-natural ecosystems. It is not clear however, how the accumulation and depth distribution of soil C and N might be affected in species-diverse croplands. Using a 15-year crop diversity field experiment, we ask how SOC and SON accumulation and vertical distribution (0-to-100 cm soil depth) changes in response to agricultural diversity, expressed as crop rotation (temporal effect) and intercropping (spatial effect) of staple crop species including wheat and faba bean (C 3 ) and maize (C 4 ). We found that rotation and intercropping across crop combinations altered the depths at which C and N were stored, over the 0–100 cm soil profile, but not the total C and N stored. There was greater SOC storage over the 0–100 cm soil profile in faba bean/maize intercropping than maize-faba bean rotation. Total SOC between 0 and 40 cm soil depth in intercropping increased by 125–164 kg C ha -1 yr -1 compared to rotation systems across crop combinations. However, rotations increased SOC at 60–80 cm in depth by 104 kg ha -1 yr -1 compared to intercropping. Also, SON stocks in rotation systems, at 60–80 cm, increased by 18 kg ha -1 yr -1 compared to intercropping systems. The accumulation and vertical distribution of SOC 3 derived from roots of wheat and faba bean contributed to increase total SOC stocks and SOC vertical distribution. SOC 4 derived from roots of maize did not have the same effect. Crop rotations promoted deeper root-associated SOC 3 accumulation whereas intercropping promoted shallower root-associated SOC 3 accumulation. Our study demonstrates how the type of crop diversification influences soil C and N sequestration via regulating root distribution, root composition and root decomposition. These findings have practical implications for soil C and N management in croplands.

Abstract:Intensive agriculture with continuous monocropping and massive chemical inputs has adversely affected belowground microbial composition and functions, resulting in soil sickness and negative feedbacks to crop growth and production. Crop diversification has been highlighted to address these problems in a more sustainable and ecological way by alterations of the temporal and spatial interactions between above- and belowground biota. However, the underlying mechanisms of crop diversity in alleviating monoculture soil sickness remain elusive. Here we propose that soil microbial networks could be a key entry point to understand the intercropping benefits on soil fertility and pathogen or pest control. Last, we raise some promising directions facing future challenges which might be beneficial to future agricultural managements and food security, and how to design an optimized cropping system to construct a healthier soil.
Effects of plant diversity on soil carbon in diverse ecosystems: a global meta‐analysis

Abstract:Soil organic carbon (SOC) is a valuable resource for mediating global climate change and securing food production. Despite an alarming rate of global plant diversity loss, uncertainties concerning the effects of plant diversity on SOC remain, because plant diversity not only stimulates litter inputs via increased productivity, thus enhancing SOC, but also stimulates microbial respiration, thus reducing SOC. By analysing 1001 paired observations of plant mixtures and corresponding monocultures from 121 publications, we show that both SOC content and stock are on average 5 and 8% higher in species mixtures than in monocultures. These positive mixture effects increase over time and are more pronounced in deeper soils. Microbial biomass carbon, an indicator of SOC release and formation, also increases, but the proportion of microbial biomass carbon in SOC is lower in mixtures. Moreover, these species‐mixture effects are consistent across forest, grassland, and cropland systems and are independent of background climates. Our results indicate that converting 50% of global forests from mixtures to monocultures would release an average of 2.70 Pg C from soil annually over a period of 20 years: about 30% of global annual fossil‐fuel emissions. Our study highlights the importance of plant diversity preservation for the maintenance of soil carbon sequestration in discussions of global climate change policy.

Abstract:Cover crops may improve soil health and increase soil carbon sequestration, thus contributing to both the adaptation to and mitigation of climate change. Despite these potential benefits, there currently lacks a global synthesis of the impacts of cover crops on soil organic carbon (SOC) fractions. We conducted a global meta-analysis of 93 peer-reviewed studies to quantify the effect of cover crops on changes in SOC fractions and the influence of environmental and management factors. Compared to bare soil management, cover crops increased SOC by 12% and increased seven SOC fractions, including microbial biomass carbon (MBC) by 33%, dissolved organic carbon (DOC) by 18%, particulate organic carbon (POC) by 15%, light-fraction organic carbon (LFOC) by 14%, permanganate oxidizable carbon (POXC) by 13%, short-term mineralizable carbon (SMC) by 10%, and mineral-associated organic carbon (MAOC) by 7%. The effect size of SOC was positively correlated with the effect sizes of MBC, POC, LFOC, and MAOC, but negatively correlated with the effect size of DOC. Soil taxonomic order and experimental duration were key factors affecting the beneficial effect of cover crops on the SOC fractions. Greater increases in SOC fractions due to cover crops were found in Entisols and Ultisols in comparison with other soil orders. The effect size of MAOC increased with experimental duration. Our study suggests that cover crops can significantly increase various SOC fractions, which likely serves as a building block for SOC sequestration and improvement of many aspects of soil health.

Crop Diversification Effects on Soil Aggregation and Aggregate-Associated Carbon and Nitrogen in Short-Term Rainfed Olive Groves under Semiarid Mediterranean Conditions

Abstract:Soil particle aggregation and their associated carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) content can provide valuable diagnostic indicators of changes in soil properties in response to the implementation of different agricultural management practices. In this sense, there is limited knowledge regarding the impact of intercropping on soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) pools in aggregates. This study aimed to evaluate the short-term effect (4 years) of three crop diversifications in rainfed olive orchards on soil aggregation, SOC and TN concentration and SOC stocks (SOC-S) under semi-arid Mediterranean conditions. Olive orchards were diversified with Crocus sativus (D-S), Vicia sativa and Avena sativa in rotation (D-O) and Lavandula x intermedia (D-L) and compared with monocropping system (CT). Soil samples were collected at two depths (0–10 and 10–30 cm) and analysed for soil aggregate mass, SOC and TN content in aggregate-size fractions obtained by the wet-sieving method. Changes caused by crop diversifications on SOC-S were also determined. Overall, after 4 years, a reduction in aggregation values was observed. However, D-S increased the macroaggregates (>250 μm) percentage, Mean Weigh Diameter values, and Geometric Mean Value in the 0–10 cm. Across treatments, aggregate-associated C in 0–10 cm was higher in the D-S treatment, while in the 10–30 cm soil layer, the greatest values were found in CT. Regarding the SOC-S, after 4 years, significant losses were recorded under CT management in 0–10 cm (−1.21 Mg ha−1) and 10–30 cm (−0.84 Mg ha−1), while D-O and D-L showed similar values to those obtained at the beginning of the study. The highest increases in SOC-S were found in D-S, with an increase of 5.88% in the 0–10 cm and 14.47% in the 10–30 cm. Our results showed the high potential of the diversified cropping system to increase soil stability and SOC sequestration.

Abstract:SUMMARY. Heat flux across the surface of human skin may be measured with copper‐tellurite‐copper thermocouple discs perfused on one side by water at a constant temperature. If the water is at about 45° C., inflammation develops in the skin under the disc within 15 min., and the changes in e.m.f. corresponding to acute changes in skin blood flow can be recorded. With a water temperature of 33° C., these blood flow changes are not easily followed.

Abstract:Although it is widely accepted that crop rotations can alleviate the adverse effects of agricultural intensification on ecosystem functioning, the influence of rotational diversification on soil microbial diversity, network complexity, and their associations with multifunctionality remains unclear. Here, we used a 16-year field experiment to assess the effect of six cropping regimes, and their respective crop diversity index (CDI, i.e., the number of crop species in a rotation multiplied by the species per year) and management intensity (MI, i.e., the anthropogenic inputs including fertilizer use, pesticide use and fuel consumption across a 2-year cycle), on soil microbial community (bacteria, fungi and protists) and soil multifunctionality. We used 20 soil functions related to soil properties, soil basal respiration, soil enzymatic activities and soil nitrogen cycling potential to characterize soil multifunctionality. Diversified crop rotation was shown to enhance soil multifunctionality. Also, soil multifunctionality and microbial diversity increased with CDI, but were negatively correlated or had a hump-shaped relationship with MI. With the increase in CDI, microbiome network nodes, edges and degree increased, but betweenness and average path length decreased. An increase in MI was found to have a hump-shaped relationship with the topological properties of the network. Soil microbiome network complexity had a stronger effect on multifunctionality than microbiome diversity and community composition. This study illustrates that more diverse rotations under intermediate MI promoted soil multifunctionality, and highlights the crucial role of network complexity in maintaining soil functions.

Soil Aggregate Size Mediates the Impacts of Cropping Regimes on Soil Carbon and Microbial Communities

Abstract:Understanding the influence of long-term crop management practices on the soil microbial community is critical for linking soil microbial flora with ecosystem processes such as those involved in soil carbon cycling. In this study, pyrosequencing and a functional gene array (GeoChip 4.0) were used to investigate the shifts in microbial composition and functional gene structure in a medium clay soil subjected to various cropping regimes. Pyrosequencing analysis showed that the community structure (β-diversity) for bacteria and fungi was significantly impacted among different cropping treatments. Functional gene array-based analysis revealed that crop rotation practices changed the structure and abundance of genes involved in C degradation. Significant correlations were observed between the activities of four enzymes involved in soil C degradation and the abundance of genes responsible for the production of respective enzymes, suggesting that a shift in the microbial community may influence soil C dynamics. We further integrated physical, chemical, and molecular techniques (qPCR) to assess relationships between soil C, microbial derived enzymes and soil bacterial community structure at the soil micro-environmental scale (e.g. within different aggregate-size fractions). We observed a dominance of different bacterial phyla within soil microenvironments which was correlated with the amount of C in the soil aggregates suggesting that each aggregate represents a different ecological niche for microbial colonization. Significant effects of aggregate size were found for the activity of enzymes involved in C degradation suggesting that aggregate size distribution influenced C availability. The influence of cropping regimes on microbial and soil C responses declined with decreasing size of soil aggregates and especially with silt and clay micro-aggregates. Our results suggest that long term crop management practices influence the structural and functional potential of soil microbial communities and the impact of crop rotations on soil C turnover varies between different sized soil aggregates. These findings provide a strong framework to determine the impact of management practices on soil C and soil health.
Plant diversity drives positive microbial associations in the rhizosphere enhancing carbon use efficiency in agricultural soils

Abstract:Expanding and intensifying agriculture has led to a loss of soil carbon. As agroecosystems cover over 40% of Earth's land surface, they must be part of the solution put in action to mitigate climate change. Development of efficient management practices to maximize soil carbon retention is currently limited, in part, by a poor understanding of how plants, which input carbon to soil, and microbes, which determine its fate there, interact. Here we implement a diversity gradient by intercropping undersown species with barley in a large field trial, ranging from one to eight undersown species. We find that increasing plant diversity strengthens positive associations within the rhizosphere soil microbial community in relation to negative associations. These associations, in turn, enhance community carbon use efficiency. Jointly, our results highlight how increasing plant diversity in agriculture can be used as a management strategy to enhance carbon retention potential in agricultural soils.

Abstract:Soil carbon (C) stabilisation is known to depend in part on its distribution in structural aggregates, and upon soil microbial activity within the aggregates. However, the mechanisms and relative contributions of different microbial groups to C turnover in different aggregates under various management practices remain unclear. The aim of this study was to determine the role of soil aggregation and their associated microbial communities in driving the responses of soil organic matter (SOM) to multiple management practices. Our results demonstrate that higher amounts of C inputs coupled with greater soil aggregation in residue retention management practices has positive effects on soil C content. Our results provide evidence that different aggregate size classes support distinct microbial habitats which supports the colonisation of different microbial communities. Most importantly our results indicate that the effects of management practices on soil C is modulated by soil aggregate sizes and their associated microbial community and are more pronounced in macro-aggregate compared with micro-aggregate sizes. Based on our findings we recommend that differential response of management practices and microbial control on the C turnover in macro-aggregates and micro-aggregate should be explicitly considered when accounting for management impacts on soil C turnover.

Abstract:<p>Ecological theory suggests that biodiversity has a positive and stabilizing effect on the delivery of ecosystem services. Yet, the impacts of increasing the diversity of cultivated crop species or varieties in agroecosystems are still under scrutiny. The empirical evidence available is scattered in scope, agronomic and geographical contexts and impacts on ecosystem services may depend on the type of diversification strategy used. To robustly assess the effects of crop diversification in agroecosystems, we compiled the results of 95 meta-analyses integrating 5,156 experiments conducted over 84 experimental years and representing more than 54,500 paired observations on 120 crop species in 85 countries. Overall, our synthesis of experimental data from across the globe shows that crop diversification enhances not only crop production (median effect +14%), but also the associated biodiversity (+24%, i.e. the biodiversity of non-cultivated plants and animals), and several supporting and regulating ecosystem services including water quality (+51%), pest and disease control (+63%) and soil quality (+11%). However, there was substantial variability in the results for each individual ecosystem service between different diversification strategies like agroforestry, intercropping, cover-crops, crop rotation or variety mixtures. Agroforestry is particularly effective in delivering multiple ecosystem services, i.e. water regulation and quality, pest and diseases regulation, associated biodiversity, long-term soil productivity and quality. Variety mixtures, instead, provide the lowest benefits, while the other strategies show intermediate results. Our results highlight that while increasing the diversity of cultivated crop species or varieties in agroecosystems represents a very promising strategy for more sustainable land management, contributing to enhanced yields, enhanced biodiversity and ecosystem services, some crop diversification strategies are more effective than others in supporting key ecosystem services.</p>

Global-scale no-tillage impacts on soil aggregates and associated carbon and nitrogen concentrations in croplands: A meta-analysis

Abstract:No-tillage treatment, including no-tillage with straw retention (NTS) and without (NT), has been widely used as an efficient and sustainable alternative to conventional tillage with straw retention (CTS) and without (CT) and greatly affects soil physical quality and organic matter dynamics in cropland ecosystems. Although some studies have reported the effects of NTS on soil aggregate stability and soil organic carbon (SOC) concentration, the underlying mechanisms of how soil aggregates, aggregate-associated SOC and total nitrogen (TN) respond to no-tillage remain unclear. Through a global meta-analysis of 91 studies in cropland ecosystems, we evaluated the effects of no-tillage on soil aggregates and their associated SOC and TN concentrations. On average, no-tillage treatment significantly decreased the proportions of microaggregates (MA) by 21.4 % (95 % CI, −25.5 to −17.3 %) and silt+clay size particles (SIC) by 24.1 (95 % CI, −30.9 to −17.0 %), and increased the proportions of large macroaggregate (LA) by 49.5 % (95 % CI, 36.7–63.0 %) and small macroaggregate (SA) by 6.1 % (95 % CI, 2.0–10.9 %) compared to those in conventional tillage. The SOC concentrations for all three aggregate sizes increased significantly with no tillage: for LA by 28.2 % (95 % CI, 18.8–39.5 %), SA by 18.0 % (95 % CI, 12.8–23.3 %), and MA by 9.1 % (95 % CI, 2.6–16.8 %). TN also increased significantly for all sizes with no tillage, with LA by 13.6 % (95 % CI, 8.6–17.6 %), SA by 11.0 % (95 % CI, 5.0–17.0 %), MA by 11.7 % (95 % CI, 7.0–16.4 %), and SIC by 7.6 % (95 % CI, 2.4–13.8 %). The magnitude of the no-tillage treatment effect on soil aggregation, aggregate-associated SOC and TN varied with the environmental and experimental conditions. The positive effect on the proportions of LA occurred with initial soil organic matter (SOM) content >10 g kg −1 , whereas SOM <10 g kg −1 did not change significantly. Additionally, the effect size of NTS compared with CTS was lower than that of NT compared with CT. These findings suggest that NTS may promote physically protective SOC accumulation through the formation of macroaggregates by reducing disturbance destruction and increasing plant-derived binding agents. The findings highlight that no-tillage may enhance the formation of soil aggregates and the associated SOC and TN concentrations in global cropland ecosystems.

Abstract:Cover cropping can improve soil C sequestration compared to no cover cropping, but the mechanism of C sequestration in soil aggregates and minerals needs more exploration. We explored C sequestration using C fractions in soil aggregates and minerals by cover crops in a five-year old summer cover crop – winter wheat ( Triticum aestivum L.) rotation system at Changwu National Agroecology Experimental Station in the Chinese Loess Plateau. Three cover crops as soybean ( Glycine max L., SB), sudangrass ( Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf , SG), soybean and sudangrass mixture (SS) were planted during summer fallow and incorporated into the soil two weeks prior to wheat planting each year. Soil samples at 0–10, 10–20, and 20–40 cm depths were collected at wheat harvest after 5-yr and analyzed for C fractions which were coarse particulate organic C (cPOC), intra-microaggregate fine particulate organic C (iPOC), free fine particulate organic C (fPOC), and mineral-associated organic C (MOC). The iPOC and MOC are considered as protected C against mineralization. Compared to no cover crop (CK), cover crops increased large macroaggregate proportion at 0–10 cm by 18–22 %, with SS having a greater mean-weight diameter (MWD) than other treatments. Cover crops had greater MOC, iPOC, and fPOC fractions than CK in most aggregate-size classes and the bulk soil at all depths, with SS having the greatest C fractions. The MOC was greater than any other C fractions, regardless of cover crop species. Cover cropping can enhance soil aggregation and C sequestration by increasing microaggregate-protected and mineral-associated C compared to no cover cropping, resulting in improved soil C stabilization. Cover crop mixture was more effective in promoting soil aggregate stability and C fractions than single cover crop species.

Abstract:Clarifying the correlation between soil organic carbon (SOC) and crop yield is key to achieving carbon neutrality and ensuring food security. However, owing to the lack of analysis based on large-scale farmland monitoring data and research on deep soil, relevant research has not yet reached a consensus. Here, we based on the monitoring data of 118 sample plots from 21 typical farmland and farmland compound ecosystem stations of the China Ecosystem Research Network (CERN) between 2004 and 2020, the temporal and spatial coupling associations between SOC content and crop yield in 0–20 cm and 0–100 cm soil layers and its factors influencing were determined. The findings revealed that between 2004 and 2020, SOC content in 0–20 cm soil layer, SOC content in 0–100 cm soil layer, and crop yield in typical farmland in China showed a fluctuating upward trend, the average annual growth rates were 0.59 %, 0.27 % and 1.07 %, respectively. The coupling relationship between SOC content and crop yield was not always good in different periods, which varies largely in different geographical divisions. Among the anthropogenic factors, exogenous carbon input can improve the coupling relationship between them by increasing the soil organic carbon content and crop yield, while the effect of less tillage and no tillage is limited. Among the natural factors, temperature, soil bulk density, and farmland type all have an impact on farmland SOC content and crop yield at different significance levels. Each variable had different effects on SOC content and crop yield in typical farmlands in different geographical regions. With deepening soil layer, influence of anthropogenic factors such as exogenous carbon input on SOC content decreases, but it still cannot be ignored. Based on these findings, the study recommends that exogenous carbon input play an important role in soil carbon sequestration and improving crop yield.

Abstract:Carbon storage and the aboveground biomass of farmland provide practical significance for understanding global changes and ensuring food production and quality. Based on soil carbon storage, aboveground biomass, climate, geochemistry, and other data from 19 farmland ecological stations in China, we analysed the distribution characteristics of farmland carbon storage in topsoil and aboveground biomass. We notably revealed the response direction and degree of climate and geochemical factors to farmland carbon storage in topsoil and aboveground biomass. The results indicated that the average carbon stocks of farmland in different regions ranged from 0.28 to 7.91 kg m-2, the average fresh weight of the aboveground biomass (FAB) ranged from 1370.64 to 5997.28 g m-2, and the average dry weight of the aboveground biomass (DAB) ranged from 119.95 to 852.35 g m-2. The least angle regression (LARS) and the best subsection selection regression (BSS) showed that evapotranspiration and extreme low temperatures were significant climatic factors affecting carbon sequestration and aboveground biomass on long-time scales. The linear mixed-effects model (LMM) further showed that AN and AP had significant long-term effects on carbon sequestration and aboveground biomass (p < 0.05), with AN having the highest contribution to SOC%, FAB, and DAB. The structural equation model (SEM) showed that carbon sequestration and aboveground biomass in agricultural fields were significantly positively correlated (p < 0.05). Moreover, the climate had a less direct contribution to carbon sequestration and above-ground biomass compared to geochemistry (PCc < 0.1<PCG), and its effect was more indirect. When the geochemical variables were removed, the correlation between climate and carbon and aboveground biomass variables decreased significantly. We conclude that it is possible that extremes climate and geochemistry control carbon sequestration and above-ground biomass in long-term cropland through interactions in the context of global change, which provides new insights into the evolution of soil organic carbon in long-term cropland and the scientific formulation of policies to increase food production and preserve quality.

Abstract:Soil aggregates not only store carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) but hold a critical role in determining the nutrients supply, crop productivity, and climate change mitigation. However, the impact of cropping system and N fertilization on aggregate-associated C and N in both topsoil and subsoil remains unclear. Here, we assessed the effect of cropping systems (wheat–soybean vs. wheat–maize cropping systems) and N fertilization rates (0 N; medium N, 120 kg N ha−1; high N, 240 kg N ha−1) on soil water-stable aggregates distribution, as well as aggregate-associated C and N based on a field study in North China Plain. Our study suggests that the variations of soil organic carbon (SOC) and total nitrogen (TN) stocks were more affected by N fertilization than short-term cropping systems. In the wheat–soybean system, medium N increased the SOC stock by 19.18% and 15.73% as compared to high N in the topsoil and subsoil, respectively. Additionally, medium N resulted in 6.59–18.11% higher TN stock in the topsoil for both wheat–soybean and wheat–maize cropping systems as compared to 0 N and high N. Notably, the water-stable macroaggregates (> 0.25 mm) in the topsoil occupied more than 70% of the soil, which increased under medium N in the wheat–soybean cropping system. In conclusion, medium N fertilization combined with a legume-based cropping could be used to improve SOC stock, promote soil aggregation, and enhance aggregate-associated C.

Abstract:Enhancing crop diversification in intensive fields has the potential to increase crop yield and reduce environmental footprint. However, these relationships at the landscape scale remained unclear in intensive farming. Addressing this gap, this paper aims to elucidate how crop yield, resources use efficiency (RUE), and environmental footprint (EF) vary with crop diversification levels in the North China Plain. Management practices, including crop pattern, field size, and agronomic inputs, were collected for 421 landscapes of 1 × 1 km subplots using Sentinel-2 and Landsat-8 images and survey. The results showed that, at the landscape scale, energy and fertilizer contributed over 53 %, and 37 % of the carbon footprint, respectively. N fertilizer constituted >98 % of the nitrogen footprint. P fertilizer accounted for over 80 %, while electricity comprised >13 % of the phosphorus footprint. Compared with simplified landscapes, diversified landscapes exhibited several significant features: 1) 56 % reduction of the area ratio of winter wheat-summer maize double crop pattern (WM), 2) a significant decrease in field size, 3) the decreased use of total NPK fertilizers at 32 %, 30 %, and 30 %, respectively, 4) the increased inputs of irrigation water, diesel, electricity, pesticide and labour at 21 %, 19 %, 21 %, 77 %, and 92 %, respectively. Although yield could be reduced at 33 % when transforming simplified landscapes into moderately diversified ones, they increased with the further promotion of crop diversification. Thus, the diversified landscapes could achieve a balance in yield, RUE, and EF to enhance sustainability, whereas simplified landscapes can similarly achieve a balance to benefit productivity. We emphasize the viable potential of diversified landscapes to enhance sustainable agricultural development by optimizing crop composition. This analysis offers pioneering evidence of landscape-scale agronomic and environmental performances of crop diversification.
