Abstract:Crop diversification in spatial and temporal patterns can optimize the synchronization of nutrients plant demand and availability in soils, as plant diversity and soil microbial communities are the main drivers of biogeochemical C and nutrient cycling. The introduction of multi-cropping in organic vegetable production can represent a key strategy to ensure efficient complementation mediated by soil microbiota, including beneficial mycorrhizal fungi. This study shows the effect of the introduction of multi-cropping in five European organic vegetable systems (South-West: Italy; North-West: Denmark and Belgium; North-East: Finland and Latvia) on: (i) soil physicochemical parameters; (ii) soil microbial biomass stoichiometry; (iii) crop root mycorrhization; (iv) bacterial and fungal diversity and composition in crop rhizosphere; (v) relative abundance of selected fungal pathogens species. In each site, three cropping systems were considered: (1) crop 1—monocropping; (2) crop 2—monocropping; (3) crop 1—crop 2—intercropping or strip cropping. Results showed that, just before harvest, multi-cropping can increase soil microbial biomass amount and shape microbial community toward a predominance of some bacteria or fungi phyla, in the function of soil nutrient availability. We mainly observed a selection effect of crop type on rhizosphere microbiota. Particularly, Bacteroidetes and Mortierellomycota relative abundances in rhizosphere soil resulted in suitable ecological indicators of the positive effect of plant diversity in field, the first ones attesting an improved C and P cycles in soil and the second ones a reduced soil pathogens' pressure. Plant diversity also increased the root mycorrhizal colonization between the intercropped crops that, when properly selected, can also reduce the relative abundance of potential soil-borne pathogens, with a positive effect on crop productivity in long term.

Abstract:<p>Ecological theory suggests that biodiversity has a positive and stabilizing effect on the delivery of ecosystem services. Yet, the impacts of increasing the diversity of cultivated crop species or varieties in agroecosystems are still under scrutiny. The empirical evidence available is scattered in scope, agronomic and geographical contexts and impacts on ecosystem services may depend on the type of diversification strategy used. To robustly assess the effects of crop diversification in agroecosystems, we compiled the results of 95 meta-analyses integrating 5,156 experiments conducted over 84 experimental years and representing more than 54,500 paired observations on 120 crop species in 85 countries. Overall, our synthesis of experimental data from across the globe shows that crop diversification enhances not only crop production (median effect +14%), but also the associated biodiversity (+24%, i.e. the biodiversity of non-cultivated plants and animals), and several supporting and regulating ecosystem services including water quality (+51%), pest and disease control (+63%) and soil quality (+11%). However, there was substantial variability in the results for each individual ecosystem service between different diversification strategies like agroforestry, intercropping, cover-crops, crop rotation or variety mixtures. Agroforestry is particularly effective in delivering multiple ecosystem services, i.e. water regulation and quality, pest and diseases regulation, associated biodiversity, long-term soil productivity and quality. Variety mixtures, instead, provide the lowest benefits, while the other strategies show intermediate results. Our results highlight that while increasing the diversity of cultivated crop species or varieties in agroecosystems represents a very promising strategy for more sustainable land management, contributing to enhanced yields, enhanced biodiversity and ecosystem services, some crop diversification strategies are more effective than others in supporting key ecosystem services.</p>

Abstract:Abstract Inspired by grassland biodiversity experiments studying the impact of plant diversity on primary productivity, the Crop Diversity Experiment set up in 2018 aimed at testing whether these biodiversity benefits also hold for annual crop systems and whether crop mixtures also achieved transgressive overyielding, i.e. yield in mixture that was higher than the most productive monoculture. The first three years of the experiment demonstrated that crop mixtures do not only increase yield compared to an average monoculture but often also compared to the highest yielding monoculture. The crop diversity effects were stronger under more stressful environmental conditions and were often achieved in mixtures with legume crops. However, we observed transgressive overyielding also under favourable conditions and in mixtures without legumes. With our investigation of the underlying mechanisms of the yield benefits we found both direct complementarities between crop species and indirect effects via other organisms. The former included chemical, spatial and temporal complementarity in N uptake, complementary root distribution leading to complementary water uptake, as well as spatial and temporal complementarity in light use. Among the indirect mechanisms we identified complementary suppression of weeds and more abundant plant growth-promoting microbes in crop mixtures, apart from complementarity in pest and disease suppression not yet studied in the Crop Diversity Experiment but demonstrated elsewhere. In consequence, the Crop Diversity Experiment supports not only the assumption that the ecological processes identified in biodiversity experiments also hold in crop systems, but that diversification of arable crop systems provides a valuable tool to sustainably produce food.

Abstract:In low-diversity productive grasslands, modest changes to plant diversity (richness, composition and relative abundance) may affect multiple ecosystem functions (multifunctionality), including yield. Despite the economic importance of productive grasslands, effects of plant diversity and environmental disturbance on multifunctionality are very rarely quantified. We systematically varied species richness, composition, and relative abundance of grassland ley communities and manipulated water supply (rainfed and drought) to quantify effects of diversity and environmental disturbance on multifunctionality. We then replaced the grassland leys with a monoculture crop to investigate 'follow-on' effects. We measured six agronomy-related ecosystem functions across one or both phases: yield, yield consistency, digestibility and weed suppression (grassland ley phase), legacy effect (effect on follow-on crop yield), and nitrogen fertiliser efficiency (full rotation). Drought reduced most ecosystem functions, although effects were species- and function-specific. Increased plant diversity affected mean performance, and reduced variation, across the six functions (contributing to multifunctional stability). Multifunctionality index values across a wide range of mixture diversity were higher than the best monoculture under both rainfed and drought conditions (transgressive over-performance). Higher-diversity, lower-nitrogen (150N) mixtures had higher multifunctionality than a low-diversity, higher-nitrogen (300N) grass monoculture. Plant diversity in productive grasslands is a practical farm-scale management action to mitigate drought impacts and enhance multifunctionality of grassland-crop rotation systems.

Abstract:Increasing biodiversity generally enhances productivity through selection and complementarity effects not only in natural but also in agricultural systems. However, the quest to explain why diverse cropping systems are more productive than monocultures remains a central goal in agricultural science. In a mesocosm experiment, we constructed monocultures, 2- and 4-species mixtures from eight crop species with and without fertilizer and both in temperate Switzerland and dry, Mediterranean Spain. We measured physical factors and plant traits and related these in structural equation models to selection and complementarity effects to explain seed yield differences between monocultures and mixtures. Increased crop diversity increased seed yield in Switzerland. This positive biodiversity effect was driven to almost the same extent by selection and complementarity effects, which increased with plant height and SLA, respectively. Also, ecological processes driving seed yield increases from monocultures to mixtures differ from those responsible for seed yield increases through the diversification of mixtures from 2 to 4 species. While selection effects were mainly driven by one species, complementarity effects were linked to larger leaf area per unit leaf weight. Seed yield increases due to mixture diversification were driven only by complementarity effects and were not mediated through the measured traits, suggesting that ecological processes beyond those measured in this study were responsible for positive diversity effects on yield beyond 2-species mixtures. By understanding drivers of positive biodiversity–productivity relationships, we can improve our ability to predict species combinations that enhance ecosystem functioning and can promote sustainable agricultural production.

Abstract:Although it is widely accepted that crop rotations can alleviate the adverse effects of agricultural intensification on ecosystem functioning, the influence of rotational diversification on soil microbial diversity, network complexity, and their associations with multifunctionality remains unclear. Here, we used a 16-year field experiment to assess the effect of six cropping regimes, and their respective crop diversity index (CDI, i.e., the number of crop species in a rotation multiplied by the species per year) and management intensity (MI, i.e., the anthropogenic inputs including fertilizer use, pesticide use and fuel consumption across a 2-year cycle), on soil microbial community (bacteria, fungi and protists) and soil multifunctionality. We used 20 soil functions related to soil properties, soil basal respiration, soil enzymatic activities and soil nitrogen cycling potential to characterize soil multifunctionality. Diversified crop rotation was shown to enhance soil multifunctionality. Also, soil multifunctionality and microbial diversity increased with CDI, but were negatively correlated or had a hump-shaped relationship with MI. With the increase in CDI, microbiome network nodes, edges and degree increased, but betweenness and average path length decreased. An increase in MI was found to have a hump-shaped relationship with the topological properties of the network. Soil microbiome network complexity had a stronger effect on multifunctionality than microbiome diversity and community composition. This study illustrates that more diverse rotations under intermediate MI promoted soil multifunctionality, and highlights the crucial role of network complexity in maintaining soil functions.

The use of cover crops has been advocated as a suitable technique for this purpose, but scientific evidence to support this has been scarce.</p> <p>2.After four years and a complete rotation; including wheat, maize and green pea as main crops in a ploughing system, we investigated the respective and combined effects of cover crops and nitrogen fertilisation on soil chemical and biological properties using a controlled experiment combining soil chemical analyses, high‐throughput sequencing and community level physiological profiles.</p> <p>3.Cover crops impeded the soil carbon and nitrogen depletion induced by intensive tillage, not only in the topsoil but also within deeper soil horizons, where more specialized bacterial communities established.</p> <p>4.Cover crops induced a significant shift in soil bacterial community diversity and composition, which was associated with changes in soil chemical features and bacterial metabolic activities along the entire soil profile.</p> <p>5.Cover crops enhanced soil resilience to nitrogen fertilisation by increasing functional redundancy and complementarity within soil bacterial communities and across soil horizons.</p> <p><i>6.Synthesis and applications</i>. Abstract:Expanding and intensifying agriculture has led to a loss of soil carbon. As agroecosystems cover over 40% of Earth's land surface, they must be part of the solution put in action to mitigate climate change. Development of efficient management practices to maximize soil carbon retention is currently limited, in part, by a poor understanding of how plants, which input carbon to soil, and microbes, which determine its fate there, interact. Here we implement a diversity gradient by intercropping undersown species with barley in a large field trial, ranging from one to eight undersown species. We find that increasing plant diversity strengthens positive associations within the rhizosphere soil microbial community in relation to negative associations. These associations, in turn, enhance community carbon use efficiency. Jointly, our results highlight how increasing plant diversity in agriculture can be used as a management strategy to enhance carbon retention potential in agricultural soils.

Abstract:Intensive agriculture with continuous monocropping and massive chemical inputs has adversely affected belowground microbial composition and functions, resulting in soil sickness and negative feedbacks to crop growth and production. Crop diversification has been highlighted to address these problems in a more sustainable and ecological way by alterations of the temporal and spatial interactions between above- and belowground biota. However, the underlying mechanisms of crop diversity in alleviating monoculture soil sickness remain elusive. Here we propose that soil microbial networks could be a key entry point to understand the intercropping benefits on soil fertility and pathogen or pest control. Last, we raise some promising directions facing future challenges which might be beneficial to future agricultural managements and food security, and how to design an optimized cropping system to construct a healthier soil.

Abstract:Cropping sequence diversification provides a systems approach to reduce yield variations and improve resilience to multiple environmental stresses. Yield advantages of more diverse crop rotations and their synergistic effects with reduced tillage are well documented, but few studies have quantified the impact of these management practices on yields and their stability when soil moisture is limiting or in excess. Using yield and weather data obtained from a 31-year long term rotation and tillage trial in Ontario, we tested whether crop rotation diversity is associated with greater yield stability when abnormal weather conditions occur. We used parametric and non-parametric approaches to quantify the impact of rotation diversity (monocrop, 2-crops, 3-crops without or with one or two legume cover crops) and tillage (conventional or reduced tillage) on yield probabilities and the benefits of crop diversity under different soil moisture and temperature scenarios. Although the magnitude of rotation benefits varied with crops, weather patterns and tillage, yield stability significantly increased when corn and soybean were integrated into more diverse rotations. Introducing small grains into short corn-soybean rotation was enough to provide substantial benefits on long-term soybean yields and their stability while the effects on corn were mostly associated with the temporal niche provided by small grains for underseeded red clover or alfalfa. Crop diversification strategies increased the probability of harnessing favorable growing conditions while decreasing the risk of crop failure. In hot and dry years, diversification of corn-soybean rotations and reduced tillage increased yield by 7% and 22% for corn and soybean respectively. Given the additional advantages associated with cropping system diversification, such a strategy provides a more comprehensive approach to lowering yield variability and improving the resilience of cropping systems to multiple environmental stresses. This could help to sustain future yield levels in challenging production environments.
Soil microbial biodiversity promotes crop productivity and agro-ecosystem functioning in experimental microcosms

Abstract:Soil biota contribute substantially to multiple ecosystem functions that are key for geochemical cycles and plant performance. However, soil biodiversity is currently threatened by land-use intensification, and a mechanistic understanding of how soil biodiversity loss interacts with the myriad of intensification elements (e.g., the application of chemical fertilizers) is still unresolved. Here we experimentally simplified soil biological communities in microcosms to test whether changes in the soil microbiome influenced soil multifunctionality including crop productivity (leek, Allium porrum). Additionally, half of microcosms were fertilized to further explore how different levels of soil biodiversity interact with nutrient additions. Our experimental manipulation achieved a significant reduction of soil alpha-diversity (45.9 % reduction in bacterial richness, 82.9 % reduction in eukaryote richness) and resulted in the complete removal of key taxa (i.e., arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi). Soil community simplification led to an overall decrease in ecosystem multifunctionality; particularly, plant productivity and soil nutrient retention capacity were reduced with reduced levels of soil biodiversity. Ecosystem multifunctionality was positively correlated with soil biodiversity (R = 0.79). Mineral fertilizer application had little effect on multifunctionality compared to soil biodiversity reduction, but it reduced leek nitrogen uptake from decomposing litter by 38.8 %. This suggests that natural processes and organic nitrogen acquisition are impaired by fertilization. Random forest analyses revealed a few members of protists (i.e., Paraflabellula), Actinobacteria (i.e., Micolunatus), and Firmicutes (i.e., Bacillus) as indicators of ecosystem multifunctionality. Our results suggest that preserving the diversity of soil bacterial and eukaryotic communities within agroecosystems is crucial to ensure the provisioning of multiple ecosystem functions, particularly those directly related to essential ecosystem services such as food provision.

Abstract:Decreasing soil productivity, despite improved crop genetics and soil technologies, signals a need for refined understanding of the interaction between soils and plants. For example, to what degree do improvements in soil structural stability and the number and type of plant species contribute to yield variability with extremes of weather? The role that soil aggregation and carbon play in the resilience of soil, and thus plant growth in extremes of moisture availability, is not well interpreted. Ultimately, improving soil organic carbon (SOC) also improves soil water retention and availability, which extends the limits of environmental variation for optimum plant growth. Not only is a significant amount of organic carbon a major element in soil resilience, but there may be interaction with the diversity of plants, which becomes evident with cover crop and crop rotation systems in agriculture. More diverse rotations including cover crops are being tested to explore the mechanisms and benefits of multispecies crop mixes. This review will explore the role of SOC and plant diversity for cropping system resilience with lessons from the temperate North American climate.

Long-term Cropping Rotation with Soybean Enhances Soil Health As Evidenced by Improved Nutrient Cycles Through Keystone Phylotypes Interaction

Abstract:Given the often-independent study of microbial diversity and function, the comprehensive impact of various cropping patterns on both aspects, as well as the interconnections between them, remains unclear. This gap constrains us from evaluating the impact of soil microbiome shifts on soil health across varying agricultural management regimes. Here, we examined the associations between microbial diversity and soil multifunctionality in three long-term cropping patterns: continuous soybean cropping, soybean-corn rotation, and continuous corn cropping. We targeted 63 functional genes associated with carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur cycling to assess soil multifunctionality. Our study demonstrated that the biodiversity and interactions of keystone phylotypes had significant positive associations with multiple soil functional genes, such as organic carbon degradation and fixation, nitrogen fixation and phosphorus solubilization. The analysis of retrieved complete genome revealed that the keystone bacteria identified in our study harbored these functional genes. Moreover, these keystone phylotypes showed associations with the dissipation of herbicide residues. Above all, we revealed that rotation of soybean with corn cropping enhanced a greater diversity of keystone phylotypes and thus fueled soil functions. Collectively, our results highlighted the importance of rotation with soybean in maintaining soil health, which could give a mechanism-based guidance for a sustainable agroecosystem.

Abstract:The metabolic diversity of soil microbiota embodies diverse functional capabilities that support ecosystem resilience, driving essential biogeochemical processes and facilitating the optimization of sustainable agricultural systems. Integrating cover crops into agricultural systems cultivates a diverse array of metabolic activities among soil microbes, synergistically enhancing ecosystem services and bolstering soil health for sustainable and productive farming practices. In an effort to gain deeper insights and expand our knowledge, we conducted a study examining the effects of cover crops and fertilizer sources, thereby shedding light on their combined impacts on the metabolic activity dynamics of soil microbial communities. In this investigation, we employed a split-plot design with two factors: (a) cover crop with three solo cover crop species—Cereal rye (Secale cereale), wheat (Triticum aestivum), hairy vetch (Vicia villosa), and one mixture of mustard (Brassica rapa) and cereal rye (Secale cereale) (CC-mix), (b) Fertilizer source includes poultry litter, chemical fertilizer, and no-fertilizer treatments. We assessed the metabolic potential of soil microbiota by using carbon substrates utilizing Biolog EcoPlates. The findings revealed that the plots with CC-mix treatment exhibited greater metabolic diversity compared to the other treatments, while among the fertilizer sources, poultry litter demonstrated higher metabolic activity. Furthermore, both treatment factors predominantly metabolized carbohydrates and polymers compared to other carbon substrate categories. The principal component analysis accounted for 46.4% of the variance, collectively represented by PC1 and PC2, emphasizing the substantial contributions of carbohydrates, amino acids, and carboxylic acids to the observed metabolic diversity. Canonical correspondence analysis revealed that pH had positively correlated with microbial functional diversity, whereas total carbon (TC), total nitrogen (TN), and water-stable aggregates (WSA) showed a negative correlation. In conclusion, cover cropping and type of fertilizer source had a notable impact on soil microbial functional diversity, with the cover crop mixture exhibiting a more pronounced influence than the individual cover crop treatments.

Abstract:Recent studies have revealed many potential benefits of increasing plant diversity in natural ecosystems, as well as in agroecosystems and production forests. Plant diversity potentially provides a partial to complete substitute for many costly agricultural inputs, such as fertilizers, pesticides, imported pollinators and irrigation. Diversification strategies include enhancing crop genetic diversity, mixed plantings, rotating crops, agroforestry and diversifying landscapes surrounding croplands. Here we briefly review studies considering how increasing plant diversity influences the production of crops, forage, and wood, yield stability, and several regulating and supporting agroecosystem services. We also discuss challenges and recommendations for diversifying agroecosystems. There is consistently strong evidence that strategically increasing plant diversity increases crop and forage yield, wood production, yield stability, pollinators, weed suppression and pest suppression, whereas effects of diversification on soil nutrients and carbon remain poorly understood. Synthesis. The benefits of diversifying agroecosystems are expected to be greatest where the aims are to sustainably intensify production while reducing conventional inputs or to optimize both yields and ecosystem services. Over the next few decades, as monoculture yields continue to decelerate or decline for many crops, and as demand for ecosystem services continues to rise, diversification could become an essential tool for sustaining production and ecosystem services in croplands, rangelands and production forests. Abstract:Summary We describe a hitherto under-recognized curious response in some individuals: of sneezing in response either to sexual ideation or in response to orgasm. Our review suggests that it may be much more common than expected. We surmise that an indiscrete stimulation of the parasympathetic nervous system may be an underlying mechanism to explain this and other reported unusual triggers of sneezing.

Abstract:Despite the well documented link between cover cropping and soil microbiology, the influence of specific cover crop species on soil microbes remains poorly understood. We evaluated how soil fungal communities in a no till system respond to four cover crop treatments: no cover crop (REF), cereal ryegrass (CRYE), wild pennycress (WPEN), and a mix of pea, clover, radish, and oat (PCRO). Soil samples were collected from experimental plots following termination of cover crops from depths of 0-2 cm and 2-4 cm where cover crops had significantly increased soil organic matter. There was no significant interaction between soil depth and cover crop treatment on either alpha diversity or beta diversity. All cover crop treatments (CRYE, PCRO, and WPEN) enhanced soil fungal richness but only CRYE enhanced soil fungal diversity and altered the fungal community structure. Soil depth altered the fungal community structure but had no effect on fungal diversity and richness. Genus Fusarium which includes some of the most economically destructive pathogens was more abundant in REF and PCRO treatments compared to CRYE and WPEN. In contrast, genus Mortierella which is known to promote plant health was more abundant in all cover crop treatments relative to the REF. These findings demonstrate that cover cropping can increase soil fungal species richness and alter fungal community structure, potentially promoting the abundance of beneficial fungi and reducing the abundance of some plant pathogens within the genus Fusarium. These effects are dependent on cover crop species, a factor that should be considered when selecting appropriate cover crops for a particular cropping system.
Hiseq Base Molecular Characterization of Soil Microbial Community, Diversity Structure, and Predictive Functional Profiling in Continuous Cucumber Planted Soil Affected by Diverse Cropping Systems in an Intensive Greenhouse Region of Northern China

Abstract:Cover crops are key determinants of the ecological stability and sustainability of continuous cropping soils. However, their agro-ecological role in differentially reshaping the microbiome structure and functioning under a degraded agroecosystem remains poorly investigated. Therefore, structural and metabolic changes in soil bacterial community composition in response to diverse plant species were assessed. Winter catch leafy vegetables crops were introduced as cover plants in a cucumber-fallow period. The results indicate that cover crop diversification promoted beneficial changes in soil chemical and biological attributes, which increased crop yields in a cucumber double-cropping system. Illumina high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes indicated that the bacterial community composition and diversity changed through changes in the soil properties. Principal component analysis (PCA) coupled with non-metric multidimensional scaling (NMDS) analysis reveals that the cover planting shaped the soil microbiome more than the fallow planting (FC). Among different cropping systems, spinach–cucumber (SC) and non-heading Chinese cabbage–cucumber (NCCC) planting systems greatly induced higher soil nutrient function, biological activity, and bacterial diversity, thus resulting in higher cucumber yield. Quantitative analysis of linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEfSe) indicated that Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Acidobacteria were the potentially functional and active soil microbial taxa. Rhizospheres of NCCC, leaf lettuce–cucumber (LLC), coriander–cucumber (CC), and SC planting systems created hotspots for metabolic capabilities of abundant functional genes, compared to FC. In addition, the predictive metabolic characteristics (metabolism and detoxification) associated with host–plant symbiosis could be an important ecological signal that provides direct evidence of mediation of soil structure stability. Interestingly, the plant density of non–heading Chinese cabbage and spinach species was capable of reducing the adverse effect of arsenic (As) accumulation by increasing the function of the arsenate reductase pathway. Redundancy analysis (RDA) indicated that the relative abundance of the core microbiome can be directly and indirectly influenced by certain environmental determinants. These short-term findings stress the importance of studying cover cropping systems as an efficient biological tool to protect the ecological environment. Therefore, we can speculate that leafy crop diversification is socially acceptable, economically justifiable, and ecologically adaptable to meet the urgent demand for intensive cropping systems to promote positive feedback between crop–soil sustainable intensification.
