Abstract:This paper examines uncertainty encountered by expert interpreters at Chinese Premier Press Conferences by marking interpreters' five types of hesitation phenomena and analyzes uncertainty management strategies. Results show (2) self-corrections, repetitions, and reformulations occur less frequently than pauses, indicating expert interpreter's better control of interpreting fluency; (2) speakers may impact interpreters' hesitation with segment length positively correlated with interpreters' pauses, self-correction, and reformulation, and speaking rate explains the variance in the occurrence of filled pauses; (3) pauses occur for retrieving lexical and morphological information, eliminating logical doubt, and explicating cultural connotation; (4) expert interpreters adopt addition and rank shift more than ellipsis, simplification, splitting, and repetition as uncertainty management strategies, showing an emphasis on adequacy, comprehensibility, and acceptability in their output.
Predicting Fluency with Language Proficiency, Working Memory, and Directionality in Simultaneous Interpreting.

Abstract:Simultaneous interpreting (SI) is a complex bilingual verbal activity that poses great challenges for working memory (WM) and language proficiency. Fluency is one of the crucial indicators in evaluating SI quality, the violation of which is characterized by disfluency indicators such as interruptions, hesitations, repetitions, corrections, and blanks. To uncover factors underlying fluency in SI, 22 interpreting students performed a battery of tasks to test their language proficiency and WM. Two SI tasks, both from Chinese to English and from English to Chinese, were also conducted, and fluency was evaluated according to the five indicators. Two factors (language proficiency and WM) and the five objectively measured disfluency indicators were then used as input for a regression analysis in both directions to model factors underlying fluency in SI performance. The results reveal that, with fluency measured as a whole, WM and directionality yield a significant effect on fluency, and that WM is the only variable that predicts fluency in both directions, accounting for 50 and 51% of the variation in the occurrence of disfluencies in Chinese-English and English-Chinese interpreting, respectively. The findings clarify for the first time the role of language proficiency, WM, and directionality upon fluency in SI, indicating the critical role of WM capability as compared with language skills in fluent production. The research also supports the position that, for interpreting students, interpreting performance tends to be more fluent in the non-native to native language direction.
Multidimensional Comparison of Chinese-English Interpreting Outputs from Human and Machine: Implications for Interpreting Education in the Machine-Translation Age

Abstract:Interpreting (i.e., oral translation) is facing challenges due to the prevalence of machine translation, and one urgent question for interpreting educators is what knowledge and skills should be taught in the machine-translation age. Focusing on this issue, the present corpus-based study systematically quantified the differences between interpreting outputs from expert interpreters and two machine translation systems. Using text analysis tools, significant differences in multidimensional linguistic features including lexical, syntactic, and cohesive ones were shown between humans and machines but not between two artificial systems. Finer-grained statistical analyses indicated that human-machine differences in certain indices deviated in varied interpreting modes. Our data collectively revealed the strengths of human interpreters in audience-oriented communicative mediation but limitations in cognitive resources. By relating the findings to interpreting competence, the current research provides important implications for empowering students in adaptively resorting to human strengths and/or embracing machine translation technologies.
Exploring Language Specificity as a Variable in Chinese-English Interpreting. A Corpus-Based Investigation

Abstract:Although structural differences have been reported as one of the problem triggers in Japanese/English and German/English interpreting, the issue of language specificity in Chinese/English interpreting has received virtually no systematic exploration. Based on the bilingual parallel corpus of Chinese-English Interpreting for Premier Press Conferences (CEIPPC), the paper presents a descriptive study into the effect of syntactic asymmetry on Chinese-English (C-E) interpreting and the relevant rendering tactics employed by interpreters. The analysis is focused on how the long and complex attributive modifying structures, which are typically front-loaded in Chinese, are interpreted into English, a language that is characterized by back-loaded modifying structures. It is found in the corpus that over 80% of the long and complex front-loaded attributive modifying structures in Chinese are interpreted into back-loaded structures or a mixture of front and back-loaded structures in English, which means extra cognitive effort of restructuring is required when interpreting between the structurally contrasted language pair. Such a cognitive-taxing effect of restructuring in C-E interpreting is triangulated with findings from a study of the comparable corpus composed of the interpreted English discourse from the corpus of CEIPCC and the original English discourse from the corpus of daily press briefings of the U.S. government. This study may shed new light on the role of language specificity as a factor impacting reproduction in C-E interpreting and implies the necessity of considering it as a variable in the theoretical account of interpreting behaviors, especially those between European and non-European languages that involve wide differences in linguistic structures and cultural conceptualization.
Coh-Metrix Model-Based Automatic Assessment of Interpreting Quality

Abstract:The present study applied the computational tool Coh-Metrix to analyze linguistic and discoursal features of the transcribed interpreting texts from the All China Interpreting Contest (ACIC) in order to predict quality assessments provided by the judges in the ACIC. We find that a stepwise linear regression model with four entries/variables (i.e., word count, lexical diversity, hypernymy of verbs, and frequency of first person singular) could predict 60% of the variance in the human scoring. These results highlight the importance of information completeness in the ACIC, as word count was highly correlated with the human scoring. In addition, the interpreted texts produced by the better performing contestants/interpreters were associated with an increasing level of language sophistication. That is, they tended to use words of higher precision, less frequency, and higher diversity. Based on these results, we argue that even without recourse to diagnostic information related to pronunciation, intonation, rhythm, and speed of delivery, automatically computed analytic indices such as word count, word diversity, and hypernymy of verbs could predict a significant amount of variance in human scoring of interpreting quality. These encouraging, albeit preliminary, findings will prompt us to further explore Coh-Metrix model-based automatic assessment of interpreting quality and also help us gain an enhanced understanding of the “quality” construct perceived by the judges in the ACIC.

Abstract:Dependency distance (DD), as the distance between two linked words in one sentence is widely used to explore the cognitive demands and cross-linguistic syntactic features in language processing. The purpose of simultaneous interpreting is to enable smooth communication between two languages, though it imposes a large burden on interpreters. However, previous studies have not yet investigated the impact of source languages on target languages in the simultaneous interpreting process between different language pairs from a typological perspective quantitatively. It is still indispensable to examine carefully how essential the role is played by different source languages in simultaneous interpreting. With recourse to quantitative methods, the current study explores English simultaneous interpretations from distinct source languages. From the cognitive perspective, results via mean dependency distance demonstrate that the structures of English interpretations are interfered marginally significantly by diverse source languages in simultaneous interpreting. Meanwhile, language typology of source languages has moderately small impact on English interpretations with resort to dependency direction. This research firstly investigates the effect of diverse source languages on the same target language in simultaneous interpreting, suggesting the overwhelming impact of mean dependency distance minimization on language processing.
Is Consecutive Interpreting Easier Than Simultaneous Interpreting? – a Corpus-Based Study of Lexical Simplification in Interpretation

Abstract:Lexical simplification parameters, labeled as representative of the cognitive load in various processes, have been applied in corpus-based studies on translation universals and interpreting outputs. We speculate that the output of simultaneous interpreting (SI), the extreme situation of language control, might be more simplified than that of consecutive interpreting (CI) due to the high cognitive load. To test this hypothesis, the present study examines the simplification patterns of rendered texts, based on a corpus composed of SI and CI output texts, read-out translated speeches and non-interpreted, original English speeches in three dimensions: information density, lexical repetitiveness and lexical sophistication. The results demonstrate that all of the parameters apply more to CI than to SI, indicating that the CI output is more simplified than the SI output. This pattern of results implies that the cognitive load of CI, if not higher, may be as high as that of SI. The research reported here is the first to compare quantitatively the lexical features of the output of CI versus SI. The counterintuitive results lend support to the modification of the established Effort Model of CI.

Abstract:The present study aimed to investigate the differences between translated and non-translated English texts with regard to interactional metadiscourse features, which are crucial in engaging readers in the reasoning process and establishing the credibility of a proposition. Despite numerous studies investigating lexical and syntactic differences between translated and non-translated language, little research has been conducted on the textual level in terms of metadiscourse use. To address this gap, we conducted a comparative analysis of six interactional markers across two comparable multi-genre corpora, namely, FLOB (Freiburg-LOB Corpus of British English) comprising native English and the English subset of COCE (Corpus of Chinese-English) containing translated English. Our ANOVA analyses revealed that translated English exhibited a tendency to underuse stance features, such as hedges, boosters, and attitude markers, compared to native English. Furthermore, our post-hoc analysis revealed that genre modulated the use of metadiscourse features in both translated and native texts. Importantly, we found that there was greater cross-genre variation in the use of interactional metadiscourse in translated English than in native English. Our study highlights the unique characteristics of translation and emphasizes the importance of taking into account metadiscourse in the field of translation studies.

Abstract:Most interpreting theories claim that different interpreting types should involve varied processing mechanisms and procedures. However, few studies have examined their underlying differences. Even though some previous results based on quantitative approaches show that different interpreting types yield outputs of varying lexical and syntactic features, the grammatical parsing approach is limited. Language sequences that form without relying on parsing or processing with a specific linguistic approach or grammar excel other quantitative approaches at revealing the sequential behavior of language production. As a non-grammatically-bound unit of language sequences, frequency motif can visualize the local distribution of content and function words, and can also statistically classify languages and identify text types. Thus, the current research investigates the distribution, length and position-dependent properties of frequency motifs across different interpreting outputs in pursuit of the sequential generation behaviors. It is found that the distribution, the length and certain position-dependent properties of the specific language sequences differ significantly across simultaneous interpreting and consecutive interpreting output. The features of frequency motifs manifest that both interpreting output is produced in the manner that abides by the least effort principle. The current research suggests that interpreting types can be differentiated through this type of language sequential unit and offers evidence for how the different task features mediate the sequential organization of interpreting output under different demand to achieve cognitive load minimization.
A comparative analysis of English for academic purposes teachers' interactive metadiscourse across the British and Chinese contexts

Abstract:This exploratory research compares the interactive metadiscourse use by native English-speaking English for academic purposes (EAP) writing teachers in the United Kingdom and their non-native counterparts in the Chinese contexts. The analysis is based on a self-compiled corpus, including two sub-corpora, which were composed of instructor contributions to classroom discourse: eight sessions of EAP lessons from the Chinese context and eight sessions of EAP lessons from the British context. Adopting an interpersonal model of metadiscourse, the two sub-corpora were compared to examine the similarities and differences in their use of interactive metadiscourse. Findings of the comparative analysis reveal that EAP teachers from both contexts rely heavily on transition markers and frame markers to organize their teaching but differ in particular linguistic realizations. This may indicate the impact of a range of factors such as logical preferences, development order of acquisition, discourse community, and speech community on teachers' interactive metadiscourse strategies. The article concludes with a few implications for metadiscourse research in spoken academic genres.

Abstract:Abstract This study investigated the effect of source language interference during English-Chinese simultaneous interpreting (SI) with and without text by examining the relationships between manifestations of language interference and interpreting modes. A corpus-based descriptive approach was used to investigate language interference during English-Chinese interpreting at various sessions of the United Nations General Assembly. An intermodal comparison was carried out in three dimensions, addressing (1) the general linguistic properties of the interpreted texts; (2) the distribution of reformulation strategies; and (3) strategies for interpreting passive constructions and attributive clauses, two structures representing structural asymmetries between English and Chinese. The results indicated that the interpreted texts produced by SI with text and SI without text showed different degrees of language interference.

This paper compares the numbers of connectives so as to provide a new typology of explicitation. In addition, it also discusses the motivations of explicitation from the aspects of the characteristics of interpretation itself, the habits of different interpreters and the different linguistic norms of Chinese and English.

Abstract:This study uses three temporal variables,namely,speech rate(SR),duration of disfluencies(DD),and the mean length of run(MLR),to find out features of disfluencies in Chinese-to-English consecutive interpretation.A 63-minute-long mock conference interpretation is collected and occurrences of disfluencies in the transcribed text are analyzed.Data analysis has shown that the frequency of disfluencies tends to be directly related to DD and MLR of the target language output,but not to SR.The more disfluencies occur,the longer DD,and the shorter MLR.Based on the above finding,it is proposed that the frequency of disfluencies in relation to DD and MLR should be taken into account in the quantitative evaluation of the fluency of interpretation.Meanwhile,public speaking skills and coping tactics in interpreting should be highlighted in the teaching of interpretation so as to improve the student interpreter's fluency.

Abstract:Simultaneous interpreting (SI) is a cognitively demanding task that imposes a heavy cognitive load on interpreters. Interpreting into one's native (A language) or non-native language (B language), known as interpreting directionality, involves different cognitive demands. The cognitive requirements of simultaneous interpreting as well as interpreting directionality affect the interpreting process and product. This current study focused on the lexical features of a specially designed corpus of United Nations Security Council speeches. The corpus included non-interpreted speeches in US English (SubCorpusE), and texts interpreted from Chinese into English (A-into-B interpreted texts, SubCorpusC-E) and from Russian into English (B-into-A interpreted texts, SubCorpusR-E). Ten measures were used to analyze the lexical features of each subcorpus in terms of lexical density, lexical diversity, and lexical sophistication. The three subcorpora were regrouped into two pairs for the two research questions: SubCorpusR-E versus SubCorpusE and SubCorpusR-E versus SubCorpusC-E. The results showed that the interpreted texts in SubCorpusR-E exhibited simpler vocabulary features than the non-interpreted texts in SubCorpusE. In addition, compared with the A-into-B interpreted texts, the B-into-A interpreted texts demonstrated simplified lexical characteristics. The lexical features of the interpreted texts reflect that experienced simultaneous interpreters consciously adopt a simplified vocabulary approach to manage the cognitive load during simultaneous interpreting. This study provides new insights into the cognitive aspects of simultaneous interpreting, the impact of directionality, and the role of lexical strategies. These findings have practical implications for interpreter training, professional growth, and maintaining interpreting quality in diverse settings.

Abstract:This study investigates the use of modal verbs in Chinese-English government press conference (GPC) interpretation. Modal verbs mark the speaker's opinion of or attitude toward the event described in a sentence. Interpreters also use modal verbs to indicate the stances of the source language speakers. The use of modal verbs has been examined in such contexts as research papers, textbooks, and second language learners' output; however, studies that compare differences in modal verbs between source and target languages in the context of interpreting are sparse. The investigation being reported is based on a comparable corpus-an original Chinese GPC and its English-translated version-and a parallel corpus-a translated English GPC and the original English version from the US. The results of the comparable corpus analysis indicate that the frequency of modal verbs in translated English is significantly higher than in original Chinese, in which only 40% of the modal verbs in translated English are consistent with their Chinese counterparts, while others are employed through amplification and value variation. The results of the parallel corpus analysis suggest that the increase of modal verbs in the target texts may help to achieve certain types of pragmatic functions in English.

Abstract:This study starts with the multi-dimensional analysis of describing linguistic variation in legislative discourse through three corpora (Chinese legislative corpus, the corresponding English translation corpus and American legislative corpus). Based on the findings from the multi-dimensional data derived from the factor analysis, contrastive interpretations are provided for related legal representations. This study then goes further to apply the corpus-based multi-dimensional analytical approach, deducing total 53 features into 5 interpretable underlying dimensions, represented as: Dimension 1 Involved Production vs. Specialized Information Density; Dimension 2 Narrative vs. Non-Narrative Discourse; Dimension 3 Author-centered Explicitness vs. Situational-dependent Reference; Dimension 4 Overly vs. Not Overly Expression of Persuasion; and Dimension 5 Abstract Description vs. Non-impersonal Style. After the analysis of certain typical patterns among these five dimensions, this study identifies and discusses four legal representations (non-narrative and explicitness, high informational density, the decontextualized style, and less overly persuasion) as key features represented in legislative discourse. Finally, general characteristics, tendencies and preferences identified in the three types of legislative texts are further deduced and interpreted from jurisprudential perspectives.

Abstract:Writers interact with readers using explicit signals of textual organization (e.g., firstly; however) and stance (e.g., possibly, surprisingly), known as metadiscourse markers (MDMs). Most metadiscourse studies, however, focus on academic writing exclusively, with minimal efforts comparing MDMs usage across communicative contexts. The present study examines English-as-Foreign-Language (EFL) learners’ use of MDMs in academic and colloquial writing. Each participant produced two texts on the same topic: a personal email to a close friend (colloquial) and an academic report to school principals (academic). The corpus of 704 texts were coded using Hyland’s metadiscourse model (2005). Trained EFL teachers scored texts for overall writing quality. The study first presented a distributional map of MDMs used in the EFL academic and colloquial writing corpora. Then, multi-level models revealed both similarities and differences in the use of MDM subtypes to serve distinct communicative purposes (e.g., more code glosses in academic writing; more boosters and engagement markers in colloquial writing). Finally, the use of MDMs was analyzed in relation to overall writing quality within and across communicative contexts. The results highlighted the strengths and weaknesses in EFL learners’ use of MDMs and informed the design of pedagogical approach attuned to the pragmatic functions of MDMs.

Abstract:Explicitation is a frequently-used interpreting strategy, but no research has yet adopted a longitudinal approach to explore its development in student interpreters and its contribution to interpreting performance. The present study identified and compared 8 specific means of explicitation employed by 62 student interpreters in a B-to-A (English-to-Chinese) consecutive interpreting (CI) task between two training stages (2nd month and end of an academic year). The results showed that first, as interpreting training proceeded, explicitation was more frequently used at the 2nd stage than at the 1st, with 7 of the 8 specific means of explicitation increasing significantly in frequency. Second, the frequency of explicitation positively correlated with CI performance, with the correlation stronger at the 2nd than at the 1st stage. The frequency of explicitation at the 1st stage significantly predicted CI performance at the 2nd stage. Abstract
