Abstract:This study proposes the novel geometrical design of open trenches in contrast to the traditional rectangular type of open trench, in order to improve the efficiency in mitigating the traffic-induced ground vibrations. The novel geometric design involves the variation in cross-sectional shape, cross-sectional area, sidewall inclination, depth of trenches, and the number of trenches. In addition, the efficiency of the multirow trenches with shallower depths, in contrast to the single-row deep trench, is also assessed for further mitigating the low-frequency ground vibrations. It is argued that these novel open trenches would change the wave propagation direction while also weakening the wave propagation capability in the original direction. A two-dimensional (2D) finite-element study is performed to investigate the isolation efficiency of novel open trench techniques with varying cross sections in a linear elastic, isotropic, and homogeneous half-space. A steady-state vertical harmonic excitation of the ground surface was simulated. The numerical results show that compared with the rectangular open trench, the part of the area behind the new cross section trench has better isolation efficiency, Cross section 6 seems to be the most efficient of the six cross sections, and the isolation efficiency is improved by nearly 10.2% compared. Increasing the cross-sectional area could not effectively improve the isolation efficiency of the open trenches. Selection of inclination of the hypotenuse to an appropriate angle, increasing the number and depth of open trenches could improve the isolation efficiency. The vibration isolation performance of the trenches in the soft soil was better than the stiff soil. Besides, an excessively high groundwater table is usually detrimental to the isolation efficiency of the trenches.
A Combination Strategy of Hollow-Closed-wall In-Filled Trench and Elastic Bearing for Reducing Environmental Vibration Induced by High-Speed Train

Abstract:With the rapid development of high-speed railway (HSR) in China, the problem of environmental vibration induced by HSR train has attracted critical concern. In this paper, a combination vibration reduction (CVR) strategy of hollow-closed-wall in-filled trench (HIT) and elastic bearing (EB) is proposed to decrease environmental vibration induced by HSR train, in which the depth of HIT could be well controlled to benefit the practical construction and economic cost. Based on the multi-body dynamics and finite element theory, HSR environmental vibration system is established and then divided into two sub-models including the 'train-track-bridge' vibration source sub-model and the 'pile-soil' vibration propagation sub-model. The two sub-models are connected via the force balance condition of the pier bottom. The verification of numerical models is conducted by comparing with the empirical formula and the ground data in the references. Then the attenuation law of environmental vibration is analyzed, and the vertical component is shown to be dominant in the HSR environmental vibration. On this basis, numerical simulations are performed to analyze the environmental vibration reduction under three strategies, namely the HIT, EB, and CVR. The results show that the HIT presents a distinct vibration reduction effect in the frequency range above 4 Hz and the vibration reduction becomes more obvious as the HIT's depth increases. However, the depth should be larger than 8 m to satisfy the code requirement; the EB presents an obvious reduction in the frequency range above 8 Hz; the CVR strategy not only further decrease the environmental vibration, but also effectively reduce the HIT's depth. By numerical analysis, the combination strategy of 6 m deep HIT and 2200 kN/mm vertical stiffness EB is recommended in the HSR environmental vibration reduction, which could also satisfy the limit of Chinese railway code.
Screening Efficiency of Open Trenches to Train-Induced Ground Vibration

Abstract:In order to investigate the screening efficiency of open trenches to the train-induced ground vibration, a new analytical model is proposed based on existing researches. The ground is firstly modeled as a fully saturated poroelastic half-space in the research of vibration isolation to moving trains. The trenches are obtained by placing three rectangular elastic layers with appropriate widths on the poroelastic half-space. The middle elastic layer is treated as the embankment, upon which the rails and the sleepers are placed. The sleepers and the rails are modeled as transversely isotropic Kirchhoff plate and Euler-Bernoulli beams respectively. Biot's theory is applied to characterize the poroelastic half-space. By Fourier transforms and Fourier series, the governing equations are solved in the transformed domain. The investigation reveals that, the screening effects of open trenches improve as the train speed increases. The effects of coupling between the soil skeleton and pore water on the screening efficiency is apparent, especially when the train speed exceeds the Rayleigh wave speed of the half-space; the screening efficiency of open trenches decreases obviously as the permeability of the ground increases. In addition, the screening efficiency of the trench on poroelastic half-space is much better than that on elastic half-space to the train-induced ground vibration for the supercritical-train-speed case.
An Analytical Formulation to Model Geometric and Resonant Scattering of Buried Metabarriers for Traffic-Induced Vibrations Mitigation

Abstract:We propose a metabarrier composed of an array of pipes equipped with resonators and develop an analytical formulation to investigate its mitigation performance on tunnel-induced ground-borne vibrations. The formu-lation calculates the displacement fields of the half-space by modelling the interaction between the tunnel -radiated waves and metabarrier-scattered waves. Both geometric and resonance scattering effects of the meta -barrier are taken into account in the metabarrier-scattered waves. With the aid of the wave function method, multiple geometric scatterings of the pipes are considered by imposing the boundary conditions at the soil-tunnel/pipe interfaces, and multiple resonance scatterings of the resonators are computed by accounting for the interplays between the resonators. We demonstrate that the proposed approach can model the tunnel -radiated waves interacting with single-unit and multiple-unit metabarriers. Our analytical formulation can correctly capture multiple bandgaps provided by a periodically arranged metabarrier, namely the bandgaps induced by Bragg-type scattering due to the spatial periodicity of the pipes and the ones induced by resonance -type scattering due to the barrier resonators. As a result, the proposed barriers can be used to shield the broadband incident waves generated by the trains in a tunnel.

Abstract:The ground vibrations due to underground moving trains cause disturbances to nearby buildings and their residents, which has been viewed as an important environmental issue. Various numerical or semi-analytical models are used to calculate the vibrations from underground railways, however, most of the prediction models adopt a single tunnel-soil system for modelling vibrations from underground trains and neglect the influence of a neighboring tunnel. In this paper, a semi-analytical wave function method is proposed for modelling vibrations from twin tunnels in a multi-layered viscoelastic and poroelastic half-space. The two tunnels are modelled as two hollow cylinders while the surrounding soil is modelled as a multi-layered half-space containing two circular cavities. The vibrations of the tunnel walls are taken as a superposition of outgoing and regular cylindrical waves. The wave field in the soil layer containing two cavities consists of down-going and up-going plane waves and cylindrical waves propagating outwards from each tunnel. In the wave function method, the transformation and translation of the plane and cylindrical waves make it possible to apply the boundary conditions at the scattering surfaces. Numerical results show that the half-space model predicts higher surface vibrations than a full-space model at equivalent surface locations. When the second tunnel is added near a deeper existing tunnel, a wider range of the free-field response above the two tunnels is significantly changed, however, the response below twin tunnels is less affected. If the separation distance between the two tunnels is smaller than five times the tunnel diameter, a twin tunnel model in a half-space is more suitable for an accurate vibration prediction at the ground surface. The cutoff effect of the rigid base is more visible for shallow bedrock at lower frequencies while the influence of the bedrock is quite limited at higher frequencies.

Abstract:Recently, the use of periodic vibration isolation barriers (PVIBs) has emerged as a significant method for attenuating environmental vibrations along the propagation path. Previous studies have indicated that periodic infilled trenches and piles can effectively isolate low-frequency surface waves. However, a considerable number of these periodic structures require full-size shipments or cast-in-place construction, thus increasing the shipment difficulty or construction period. In addition, few experimental studies have reported on the performance of PVIBs under underground excitation. To solve these problems, this study proposes a novel periodic composite rubber-concrete barrier (PCRCB) with prefabricated assembly characteristics. A laboratory test was performed, in which the calculated frequency band gap (FBG) and attenuation zones of the optimised PCRCB were validated under ground-borne and underground hammering excitations. Then, a numerical model was developed to analyse the vibration mitigation effect of the optimised PCRCB considering the metro train loads. The results of the laboratory study demonstrated that the depth of the impact load affects ground vibration attenuation. The optimised PCRCB has been proven to exhibit good vibration isolation performance. The results of the numerical study demonstrate that the vibration mitigation effect of the PCRCB on the ground surface is good under underground metro train loads. The insertion loss ( IL ) increases, but its value is less than 2 dB, with the ratio of burial depth to tunnel base depth increases from 1 to 2 times. Accordingly, the ratio of the burial depth to the tunnel base depth is recommended to be 1 in the vibration isolation project of an underground metro train.

Abstract:The screening effects of trenches on train-induced ground vibration are investigated by an analytical method. The embankment and soil banks beside the trench are modeled as elastic layers with appropriate widths. A fully saturated poroelastic half-space is first utilized in the investigation of the isolation of train-induced ground vibration. Biot's theory is applied to characterize the saturated poroelastic half-space, considering the coupling between the soil skeleton and the fluid. Based on Fourier transforms and Fourier series, the governing equations are solved. The various performances of the trenches on the single-phase elastic half-space and saturated poroelastic half-space as screening barriers to mitigate the ground vibration are specially investigated. It is found for the vibration generated by the axle train load with supercritical speed that the discrepancy between the screening efficiency of the trenches on the poroelastic half-space and elastic half-space is significant; the single-phase elastic half-space model may significantly underestimate the screening effect of the trench. Mitigation of Ground Vibration Generated by High-Speed Trains on Saturated Poroelastic Ground with Under-Sleeper Pads

Abstract:Train-induced track and ground vibrations accelerate the deterioration of track, cause nuisance to nearby residents, and even damage adjacent structures. Past research has shown that under-sleeper pads (USPs) are effective at improving track performance and insulating ground vibrations generated by moving trains. The present study was the first to investigate the effectiveness of USP at reducing train-induced ground vibrations at both subcritical and supercritical train speeds (critical speed is defined as the Rayleigh wave speed of the ground surface) and was the first to study the effectiveness of USP at reducing ground vibrations with a two-phase poroelastic soil model. A vehicle-track-ground model containing a fully saturated poroelastic half-space was established, and the whole system was solved by a semianalytical method using Fourier transforms and Fourier series. The differences in the performance of the USPs on saturated poroelastic ground and single-phase elastic ground were examined. It was found that the USPs effectively reduced free-field ground vibrations at subcritical train speeds, but the USP insulation effectiveness was minimized at supercritical train speeds. USPs might also reduce excess pore water pressure in the ground during the passage of a train.

Abstract:Environmental vibration pollution has serious negative impacts on human health. Among the various contributors to environmental vibration pollution in urban areas, rail transit vibration stands out as a significant source. Consequently, addressing this issue and finding effective measures to attenuate rail transit vibration has become a significant area of concern. An infilled trench can be arranged periodically along the propagation paths of the waves in the soil to attenuate vibration waves in a specific frequency range. However, the periodic infilled trench seems to be unsatisfactory for providing wide band gaps at low and medium frequencies. To improve the isolation performance of wave barriers at low to medium frequencies, a buried PT-WIB consisting of a periodic infilled trench and a wave impedance block barrier has been proposed in this paper. A three-dimensional finite element model has been developed to evaluate the isolation performance of three wave barriers. The influence of the PT-WIB's parameters on isolation performance has been analyzed. The results indicate that the combined properties of the periodic structure and the wave impedance block barrier can effectively achieve a wide attenuation zone at low and medium frequencies, enhancing the isolation performance for mitigating environmental vibration pollution.

Predicting the Influence of Vibration from Trains in the Throat Area of a Metro Depot on Over-Track Buildings

Abstract:Urban land resources are scarce in China. To utilize land effectively and economically, many cities are developing over-track buildings above metro depots. The vibration from the entrance and exit lines of metro depots under an over-track platform would significantly impact over-track buildings. To study the influence of train vibration in the throat area of a metro depot on over-track buildings, a simulation model was established using a finite element method. The reasonability of the simulation method and parameter settings was verified through comparing the vibration simulation results with vibration test results in the throat area of a metro depot. Furthermore, the impact of parameters of over-track platform and building on indoor vibration induced by a train was quantitatively studied. According to simulation results, a prediction model was developed to predict the impact of train vibration on over-track buildings in metro depots. From the perspective of architectural planning and design, this study provides a theoretical and technical basis for the prevention and control of indoor vibrations in over-track buildings of urban metro depots.
Centrifuge modeling of heavy masses, placed on the ground, as a vibration attenuation countermeasure for surface trains

Abstract:Recent studies have shown that heavy masses, sited on the ground surface, can reduce vibrations induced by surface sources. In this study, six centrifuge model tests with seven different frequencies (42 centrifuge tests in total) were conducted, for the first time, to investigate the mitigation performance of heavy masses for train-induced ground vibrations. Significant vibration reductions were observed for the tested scenarios, indicating the remarkable mitigation potential of this technique. Centrifuge test results showed that a single row of concrete blocks next to the vibration source can reduce vibration levels by 13.2%-52.0%, depending on the exciting frequencies. However, the proficiency of the mentioned method at high frequencies requires the use of very wide blocks, which may not be practical. To address this issue, the mitigation effect of double rows of concrete masses with various configurations was also studied. It was found that using two rows of concrete blocks between the source and receiver points can considerably enhance the system efficiency for the entire tested frequency range, resulting in vibration reductions of up to about 39% more than a single row of concrete blocks. The largest attenuation levels, up to 71.6% reduction, and the widest attenuated frequency band were achieved using double continuous concrete walls.

Comparison of Five Analytic Techniques for Two-Group, Pre-Post Repeated Measures Designs Using SAS ®

Abstract:There has been debate regarding which method to use to analyze repeated measures continuous data when the design includes only two measurement times. Five different techniques can be applied and give similar results when there is little to no correlation between pre- and post-test measurements and when data at each time point are complete: 1) analysis of variance on the difference between pre- and post-test, 2) analysis of covariance on the differences between pre- and post-test controlling for pre-test, 3) analysis of covariance on post-test controlling for pre-test, 4) multiple analysis of variance on post-test and pre-test, and 5) repeated measures analysis of variance. However, when there is missing data or if a moderate to high correlation between pre- and post-test measures exists under an intent-to-treat analysis framework, bias is introduced in the tests for the ANOVA, ANCOVA, and MANOVA techniques. A comparison of Type III sum of squares (where estimated), F-tests and p-values for a complete case and an intent-to-treat case are presented. The analysis using a complete case data set shows that all five methods produce similar results except for the repeated measures ANOVA due to a moderate correlation between pre- and post-test measures. However, significant bias is introduced for the tests when using the intent-to-treat data set.

Abstract:The vehicle–track interaction leads to the vibrating source for the prediction of train-induced building vibrations. To prevent modeling difficulties in the source part, this study proposes a practical back-analysis methodology for calculating underground train-induced building vibrations. The methodology combines the advantages of field measurements and numerical simulations. The fundamental concept of the hybrid methodology is to first create a virtualized moving source at the rail surface and subsequently modify it until the numerical predictions are consistent with the field measurements at the same locations. These locations are frequently selected at the ground surface or near the building foundation. Finally, this imaginary force can be used to predict the vibrations of buildings. The practicality of the hybrid methodology is verified by comparing the predicted vibrations of buildings with field test results. As an application of the proposed method, the transmission laws and characteristics of the vibrations in buildings are analyzed.
Serviceability Design Spectral Acceleration for Structures Subjected to Passing Underground Trains

Abstract:Evaluation of the vibration transmitted to a building due to nearby passing underground trains is an important design need nowadays. There are no easily available tools for this purpose, and in many cases, engineers must resort to local measurement and vibration experiments. As a simple alternative, in this paper the idea of using seismic design spectra for earthquake analysis is extended to dealing with train-induced vibrations. In this regard, maximum accelerations are calculated for single-degree-of-freedom systems with natural periods of 0–4 s subjected to passage of an underground train. The dynamic wheel loads are determined first and then applied to a 3D soil-tunnel system. The problem is analyzed for the three most common train types, three train velocities, three different tunnel depths, three soil types and three damping ratios of the structure. The analysis results in the design spectral acceleration for 243 cases of passing trains. By comparison to the comfort threshold, cases in which the serviceability is breached are highlighted. The spectra presented can be used as a very simple tool for analysis of the train-induced vibrations in modal analysis of structures.

Abstract:Abstract The rapid growth of urbanization and the progress of industrialization have resulted in the construction of over or near-track buildings. Train-induced ground-borne vibrations have attracted attention because they can damage buildings and cause residents discomfort. This study conducted a series of finite element analyses on three 5-story concrete framed buildings, which were subjected to the passage of trains at various speeds. One of the buildings was modeled as an over-track building, whereas the other two buildings were located in close proximity to the track but at different distances. The present study investigated the impact of train speed and track-to-building distance on the acceleration and velocity responses of buildings. The comparison of residents’ comfort levels and the structural safety of buildings against potential damages was conducted using international standards as the controlling criteria. Furthermore, an efficient mitigation technique was implemented, involving the utilization of open trenches with different depths between buildings and the railway track. This approach was employed with the aim of minimizing the detrimental impacts caused by trains-induced vibrations. The findings indicated that the over-track building was impacted by the train-induced vibrations more than near-track buildings. Furthermore, it was shown that although the passage of high-speed trains can disturb the comfort of building residents and potentially cause some structural damage to buildings, it did not lead to any significant story drifts in the structures. Finally, the minimum required depth of open trenches to mitigate train-induced vibrations was computed for every type of buildings and train speeds.

Abstract:Journal of Low Frequency Noise, Vibration and Active Control, Ahead of Print. In this research, the effects of two different types of in-track countermeasures on ground-borne vibration from underground railways are investigated. First, the influence of new type of supports is investigated, in which the rotation of the rail is partially or fully restrained. Second, a different simple local resonator is considered consisting of masses on springs placed at fixed spacing between the supports. To investigate the effects of these countermeasures, a numerical model is developed consisting of two sub-models: the first sub-model is an excitation model in which the track is modelled as an infinite beam on discrete supports connected to rigid foundation, for the calculations of forces transmitted to tunnel bed. The beam is analysed under the action of a number of axle masses with harmonic excitation induced through relative displacement between the un-sprung axle mass and the beam using a pull-through roughness. This first sub-model employs the dynamic stiffness method to perform the calculation. The second sub-model accounts for a tunnel embedded in a half space and is used to calculate the responses in the free surface with the input forces taken from the first sub-model after transformation to the wavenumber domain. The second sub-model is based on the well-known Pipe in Pipe (PiP) model. The discontinuously-supported model used in this work is verified using a continuously supported model. The effects of the suggested countermeasures on vibration mitigation are explored via parametric analysis that shows the impact of the added rotational stiffness, resonators' natural frequency and the resonators' mass. The results show for the parameters considered that using the rotation restrained support can effectively reduce the ground-borne vibration levels by up to 20 dB for low frequencies. Furthermore, the use of local resonators can reduce the ground-borne vibration by 4–10 dB for frequencies in the range 20–200 Hz.

[Characterization of de novo malignancies in liver transplantation].

Abstract:INTRODUCTION The incidence of de novo malignancies after liver transplantation varies from 3-15%, and is greater than that in the general population. Immunosuppression may play a significant role in the development of most of these tumors. OBJECTIVE To evaluate the incidence and clinical features of de novo tumors in liver transplant recipients in our center as well as to assess survival. PATIENTS AND METHODS We retrospectively analyzed 437 liver transplantations (380 patients) performed from April 1990 to July 2001. The incidence of de novo malignancies was 7.4% (n = 28). Four patients presented two different tumors during their lifetime. The etiology of the underlying disease was alcoholic cirrhosis (45.8%), hepatitis C virus cirrhosis (20.8%), hepatitis B virus cirrhosis (12.5%), autoimmune disease (8.4%) and other causes (12.5%). The most frequent neoplasms were cutaneous and epidermoid tumors (21.4% of the malignancies both groups). All the patients with epidermoid tumors and adenocarcinomas were active smokers. The mean age at diagnosis was 58 9 years and this was a factor that influenced tumoral type (adenocarcinomas in older patients and epidermoid tumors in younger patients; p = 0.04). RESULTS Sarcomas and adenocarcinomas appeared sooner after transplantation than epidermoid and cutaneous tumors (p = 0.04). Fifty percent of the malignancies developed in the second and third year after transplantation. The type of immunosuppression did not influence tumoral type, although most patients received cyclosporin A in combination with azathioprine and/or corticoids. The mean duration of follow-up after diagnosis of the tumor was 23.1 28 months (range, 1-81). Mortality was 58.4% with a median survival of 9 16 months. The actuarial probability of survival at 1, 3 and 5 years was 46.1, 27.7 and 27.7%, respectively. CONCLUSIONS De novo malignancies are frequent after liver transplantation and their clinical course differs from that in the general population. Because their clinical course is more aggressive, regular follow-up of these patients is essential for early diagnosis.
Control of Metro Train-Induced Vibrations in a Laboratory Using Periodic Piles

Abstract:Laboratories with sensitive instruments need a low-vibration environment. It is a challenge to control the train-induced vibration impact on these instruments when a newly planned metro line is adjacent to a laboratory building. An alternative method of mitigating train-induced ground vibrations involves installing measures along the transmission path. Recent research has highlighted the potential of periodic pile barriers with specifically designed band gaps for controlling environmental vibrations. This study performed in-situ measurements of ambient vibrations inside and outside a laboratory containing various types of sensitive instruments and located adjacent to a newly designed metro line. The vibration transfer function of the laboratory was then obtained. To help design and optimize the band gaps of periodic piles, a novel band gap performance evaluation function was proposed. Finally, numerical analysis was conducted to validate the mitigation effect of the designed periodic piles. The results showed that the band gap performance evaluation function can be used to optimize the mitigation effect of periodic piles. The proposed periodic piles clearly attenuated vibrations between 52.4 and 74.3 Hz, especially those at 63 Hz. A comparison of general vibration criteria (VC) curves revealed that vibration attenuation of one level can be obtained by the designed periodic piles.

Abstract:The mitigation of surface wave is the primary concern in ground vibration isolation due to the energy of wave propagation in the soil being concentrated in the surface wave. Herein, a composite in-filled trench composed of expanded polystyrene (EPS) and concrete was proposed and arranged as a periodic structure. The surface wave attenuation zone of the proposed periodic composite in-filled trenches and its application to the isolation of train-induced ground vibration were investigated in this paper. A field test of ground vibration induced by an elevated intercity railway was conducted in order to obtain acceleration data and their corresponding dominate frequencies. Then, a two-dimensional finite element mode using COMSOL was developed to reveal the dispersion relationship and attenuation zones of the surface wave in layered ground. The influence of the different parameters of the periodic composite in-filled trenches on the reduction performance of train-induced ground vibration was analyzed numerically. The results indicate that an effective reduction performance of the proposed periodic composite in-filled trenches can be achieved when their attenuation zone coincides with the frequencies of the surface waves. Moreover, the proposed composite periodic structure illustrated an improvement in ground vibration isolation compared to periodic in-filled trenches comprising concrete or EPS only.

Abstract:Open trenches are one of the most popular vibration isolation techniques used to reduce the transmission of ground vibrations. Despite several advantages of this systems for isolating ground vibrations, the major drawback is the geotechnical instability of the trenches. To solve this issue, the author have created a novel approach that involves filling the open trenches with hollow pipes in specific pattern. This is a novel method for mitigating ground vibrations by burying hollow pipes horizontally. Through the use of three-dimensional (3D) finite-element modeling, the effectiveness of such hollow pipes in decreasing ground vibrations generated by harmonic stress excitation on the ground surface was investigated. Compared to open trench barriers and in-filled trench, these pipe assemblages have been demonstrated to be highly successful in reducing ground vibration transmission while addressing issues of instability and enhancing vibration isolation efficiency. In PLAXIS3D, a dynamic numerical model is developed, and the results are validated against available solutions. Then, an optimized design technique for wave barriers is developed, and explore the effect of layered soil on vibration isolation effectiveness of hollow pipes.
