Abstract:ICANS Proceedings Preface Proceedings of the 22nd Meeting of the International Collaboration on Advanced Neutron Sources (ICANS-XXII); 27–31 Mar 2017, Said Business School and St Anne’s College, Oxford, UK. Philip King, Preeti Kaur, Zoe Bowden, Sara Fletcher, Robert McGreevy, Joanne Hemstock The 22nd meeting of the International Collaboration on Advanced Neutron Sources (ICANS-XXII) was held at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford, in March 2017. It was hosted by the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source in partnership with the UK Institute of Physics. 140 talks and 90 posters enabled discussion on a wide range of topics including neutron instrument design, neutron targets, detectors, guides and optics, neutronics, shielding, data analysis and computing, moderators, and compact neutron sources for the future. The aim was to encourage discussion and the sharing of knowledge and experience between neutron sources around the world, with the prospect of continued development of sources and instruments well into the future. The meeting was particularly timely with the European Spallation Source and Chinese Spallation Source both well into their construction phases. This meeting was the 40th anniversary of the first ICANS workshop in 1977. John M. Carpenter (Argonne National Laboratory), Rex G. Fluharty (Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory), Leo C. W. Hobbis (Rutherford Appleton Laboratory) and Motoharu Kimura (Tohoku University and the Japanese National Laboratory for High Energy Physics, KEK) formulated the goals and structure of the collaboration, focussing on the subjects of accelerator development, source (target) and moderator development, and neutron scattering instrumentation development. ICANS now links over 15 facilities worldwide, providing a forum for scientists and engineers to openly discuss and share information on the progress and developments in accelerator-based neutron sources. ICANS has the following goals: • to facilitate the exchange of technical information; • to provide for review of results and designs; • to reduce duplication of efforts; • to identify areas for collaborative efforts, and; • to provide means for informing participants about plans for activities relating to spallation source development. We would like to thank all the participants of ICANS XXII for excellent presentations and discussions.
